WASHINGTON, D.C. –&nbsp;Today, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) condemned recent liberal attacks on American ways&nbsp;of life and ideals. In one high-profile case, a Politico reporter attacked as “Christian Nationalists” those who&nbsp;“believe that our rights as Americans, as all human beings, don't come from any earthly authority, they don't come from Congress, they don't come from the Supreme Court; they come from God.” Ricketts made the comments while on a conference call with Nebraska media.

“According to this reporter, those who recognize that our rights come from God instead of the government are radical Christian Nationalists,'”&nbsp;Ricketts said.&nbsp;“This is truly a stunning smear of much of our country, past and present. It’s ignorant. It’s bigoted. It’s simply un-American. And actually, it’s wrong. As many Nebraskans know, the idea that our rights come from God is an American idea. “He’s disregarded proven solutions like biofuels in favor of unworkable and expensive EV mandates. His reckless overspending created historic inflation which costs a typical family more than $11,400 a year to buy the same things they bought before Joe Biden was President. The Attorney General’s Office filed charges on Tuesday directly in Scotts Bluff County District Court. 

Brian Wasson, who previously served as a Police Captain for the Scottsbluff Police Department, pled to two felony counts of theft by unlawful taking in excess of $5,000. 

Bond was set, and Mr. Wasson surrendered himself and was booked. His sentencing is scheduled for April 23rd in Scottsbluff.

Former Scottsbluff Police Captain faces sentencing for Felony Theft

CHADRON – All 19 high school and middle school students who competed at the Western District History Day at Chadron State College will advance to the Nebraska National History Day&nbsp;<a href="https://ne.nhd.org/App?f=608ec1a4-ed22-4db2-adee-8157633c2c54" target="_blank">State Contest</a>&nbsp;in Lincoln on April 20.

Judges included CSC faculty and staff members Dr. Kurt Kinbacher, Professor of History, Mark Hunt, Security Supervisor, Alva Roberts, IT Specialist, and Sydney Brown, Admissions Counselor. CSC Alum Rossella Tesch, Chadron Public Library Director, was also a judge.

Conferencing Coordinator Shellie Johns, who organized the event with veteran Dawes County educator Moni Hourt, said the judges did a fantastic job and provided great feedback to help prepare the students for state.

“They were so passionate about the program and truly enjoyed being judges,” Johns said.

Kinbacher represented the Mari Sandoz Society and presented a $50 Plains Award to two teams: Ada Norman and Amelia Betson, and Garrett Tollman and Tomi Reid, all of Crawford.

Johns said she and Hourt hope to invite parents to participate in more activities with the students during the event next year.

New Alliance Police Chief talks Sexual Harassment Allegations (Audio)

&nbsp; WASHINGTON, D.C. –&nbsp;U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) sent a letter to Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Postal Service Louis DeJoy urging him to reconsider the proposed relocation of the North Platte Processing and Distribution Center to Denver, Colorado.&nbsp;

“The North Platte P&amp;DC is a critical hub for USPS delivery in rural Nebraska through its role in processing and distributing mail for all of central and western Nebraska west of Cozad. Relocating its operations to Denver, Colorado would risk further decreasing on-time delivery for my constituents,”&nbsp;wrote Senator Fischer.

In her letter, Senator Fischer called on Postmaster General DeJoy to earnestly work with stakeholders to reevaluate the impact the relocation of the processing and distribution center would have on her constituents.

“Americans rely on USPS to stay connected and access to this vital service cannot be in doubt. While I appreciate the desire of USPS to modernize operations and address its fiscal stability, this must not come at the expense of our communities’ access to timely mail services,”&nbsp;Senator Fischer continued.

On January 10, 2024, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) published a notice that it was conducting a Mail Processing&nbsp;Facility Review of its processing operations at the North Platte Processing and Distribution Center (P&amp;DC). Currently, the North Platte facility processes and distributes all mail in Nebraska west of the city of Cozad to the Wyoming border, north to the South Dakota border, and into portions of northern Kansas.

The Mail Processing Facility Review is considering three options for the North Platte P&amp;DC to determine whether efficiency could be increased and service improved.&nbsp;USPS is reviewing public input as part of the review. If USPS decides to move forward with changing operations at the North Platte P&amp;DC, the agency will hold&nbsp;a public input meeting to collect additional feedback.

&nbsp; &nbsp;On March 5, 2024 at approximately 4:38pm Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department was dispatched to a fully involved structure fire on Haig Road. Upon arrival of the Fire Chief, the structure was found to be at 75% involvement. Firefighting efforts were challenged with strong wind gusts at the time of the fire. Mutual aid was requested from Mitchell, Gering, Morrill and Lyman. 

In the process of extinguishing this fire 114,000 gallons of water was hauled to and used at the scene. Approximately 30 firefighters were on scene. The home and contents were deemed a loss at $1 million. The State Fire Marshall’s Office was on scene to investigate the fire. All units cleared the scene on March 6th at approximately 1am.

With the recent warm weather in Western Nebraska, army cutworms have been spotted in southern Sioux County and central Lincoln County. With spring approaching, this pest may be seen in Nebraska crop fields in the near future. It is an important time to scout for army cutworm, particularly in winter wheat and alfalfa.

Of the many cutworm species in Nebraska, the army cutworm is the most damaging in western Nebraska causing damage to alfalfa, wheat, sugarbeet, canola, and various rangeland grasses. There have also been reports of army cutworm feeding on pulse crop seedlings, such as field peas and chickpeas. Economic damage from other cutworms, such as the pale western cutworm, dark-sided cutworm, and variegated cutworm, is rare. Army cutworms may also be found in lawns and turfgrass.

How Army Cutworms Survive the Winter

In late September and October, army cutworm moths laid their eggs directly on bare soil, such as in newly planted winter wheat or heavily grazed patches of range. Females can lay 1,000-3,000 eggs. After rainfall, these eggs hatched over an extended period, leading to various caterpillar sizes feeding and developing as long as temperatures were adequate (approximately higher than 45°F). When the weather turned colder, the caterpillars burrowed down into the soil to spend the winter. Because army cutworms overwinter in Nebraska as larvae in the soil, they are one of the first caterpillars to be seen in the spring. Now, caterpillars will emerge from the soil on warmer days to feed (Figure 1).

Scouting and Treatment Recommendations

Scouting fields for army cutworms now and in the coming weeks is recommended. As we continue into early spring and wheat breaks dormancy, this would be a good time to scout for cutworm activity.

Army cutworm larvae are greenish-brown to greenish-grey caterpillars, approximately ½ to 2 inches in length (Figure 1). Feeding damage from army cutworm larvae can vary from grazing leaf tips and chewing on the sides of wheat seedlings (Figure 2) to complete stand reduction. In infested fields, you may see higher than usual bird activity, especially in the early morning; birds will often feed on army cutworm larvae when they are in high numbers.

To scout for army cutworms, use a treatment threshold of 4 or more cutworm larvae per square foot of winter wheat or alfalfa. However, for stressed, thin stands of wheat or newly established alfalfa stands, use a threshold of 2 or more larvae per square foot. New or stressed alfalfa stands (for example, stands that suffered from some winterkill) require a lower threshold because they are more prone to damage from cutworms. Army cutworms only feed at night and seek out dark, sheltered areas during the day. Turn over clots of loose soil and residue for accurate cutworm counts.

With spring approaching, this pest may be seen in Nebraska crop fields in the near future. It is an important time to scout for army cutworm, particularly in winter wheat and alfalfa.Of the many cutworm species in Nebraska, the army cutworm is the most damaging in western Nebraska causing damage to alfalfa, wheat, sugarbeet, canola, and various rangeland grasses. There have also been reports of army cutworm feeding on pulse crop seedlings, such as field peas and chickpeas. Economic damage from other cutworms, such as the pale western cutworm, dark-sided cutworm, and variegated cutworm, is rare. Army cutworms may also be found in lawns and turfgrass.How Army Cutworms Survive the WinterIn late September and October, army cutworm moths laid their eggs directly on bare soil, such as in newly planted winter wheat or heavily grazed patches of range. Females can lay 1,000-3,000 eggs. After rainfall, these eggs hatched over an extended period, leading to various caterpillar sizes feeding and developing as long as temperatures were adequate (approximately higher than 45°F). When the weather turned colder, the caterpillars burrowed down into the soil to spend the winter. Because army cutworms overwinter in Nebraska as larvae in the soil, they are one of the first caterpillars to be seen in the spring. Now, caterpillars will emerge from the soil on warmer days to feed (Figure 1).Scouting and Treatment RecommendationsScouting fields for army cutworms now and in the coming weeks is recommended. As we continue into early spring and wheat breaks dormancy, this would be a good time to scout for cutworm activity.Army cutworm larvae are greenish-brown to greenish-grey caterpillars, approximately ½ to 2 inches in length (Figure 1). Feeding damage from army cutworm larvae can vary from grazing leaf tips and chewing on the sides of wheat seedlings (Figure 2) to complete stand reduction. In infested fields, you may see higher than usual bird activity, especially in the early morning; birds will often feed on army cutworm larvae when they are in high numbers.To scout for army cutworms, use a treatment threshold of 4 or more cutworm larvae per square foot of winter wheat or alfalfa. However, for stressed, thin stands of wheat or newly established alfalfa stands, use a threshold of 2 or more larvae per square foot. New or stressed alfalfa stands (for example, stands that suffered from some winterkill) require a lower threshold because they are more prone to damage from cutworms. Army cutworms only feed at night and seek out dark, sheltered areas during the day. For many farm and ranch families, bringing children or grandchildren into the operation is the ultimate goal. Successfully bringing additional family members into the operation may require some creativity, as all parties need to maintain a viable standard of living. This series of articles will highlight ideas and tactics for bringing another family member into the operation.

One tactic is to provide new family members with monetary compensation, such as an hourly wage or salary. The total compensation should be comparable to the market value of wages to hire a non-family member to do the same work.

Here are things to consider when employing this strategy.&nbsp;

Not all compensation has to come from an hourly wage or salary. Often, owners will compensate family members in various forms, such as housing, vehicles, insurance, etc. Non-monetary compensation should be valued and factored into the total compensation package. The total compensation package should allow both owners and other family members to maintain a viable standard of living. The monetary and non-monetary compensation package should be discussed and in writing before someone becomes involved in the operation.&nbsp;

One strategy to help transition someone onto your farm or ranch operation is providing monetary compensation. Look for future articles outlining other strategies on the Center for Ag Profitability website at cap.unl.edu.&nbsp;

Work with your accountant to make sure you have the correct documentation and reporting.</li><li>Financial Freedom&nbsp;– Providing monetary compensation can provide financial autonomy.&nbsp; A competitive compensation package shows that you value their contributions to the business. Additionally, being able to make their own spending and investment decisions can be empowering for them.</li><li>Setting Expectations&nbsp;– One of the biggest challenges for farm and ranch families is setting expectations for work. Different generations often have different views on this matter. When setting a monetary compensation rate, also consider writing position descriptions that clearly define working hours and responsibilities.</li><li>Maintain control&nbsp;– By monetarily compensating family members, ownership of the entity and capital assets are not being transferred. In the early stages of the transition process, paying wages or a salary may be a way to test the waters and see if working together in the operation is feasible. If it is not, the owner still maintains control of the capital assets. The family member also now has cash to start their own operation or choose a new career path.</li>

Testimony in court from someone serving as an officer who came to America illegally could be easily discredited in front of virtually any jury.”

But signing up illegal immigrants to work in law enforcement agencies isn’t the answer and jeopardizes the future success of criminal prosecutions in Nebraska.”

The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office received information of several dogs locked in a camper trailer located at Captain Critters Country Campground west of Scottsbluff. The reporting party described the conditions as “horrible with feces everywhere” and didn’t see any food or water for the dogs.

At around 1035 hours this date, Deputies and Investigators from the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant on a camper trailer located at the campground and recovered 21 dogs.

The dogs included Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Boxers, Labradoodles, and Saint Bernards, along with puppies born within the last few days, as they hadn’t opened their eyes yet.

The dogs were found locked into cages with no food or water, laying in their own urine and feces. &nbsp;The larger breeds were locked into cages they could barely stand-up in. There were puppies stuck inside dog carriers with no food or water, the bottom of the carrier covered in their own urine and feces. The dogs were secured and transported to the Panhandle Humane Society, where they will be given full examination, treatment and bathed.

As a result of the investigation, Jaydee Sims, age 45, and Sadonya Sims, age 40, both of Lyman, were arrested by the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Office.&nbsp; They were transported to the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center, where they were charged with 21 counts each of Cruelty to Animals. Assisting with the investigation were the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff Police Department, Animal Health Center, the Panhandle Humane Society, and Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

(Lincoln, Neb.) — Today, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced the Good Life, Great Journey Scholarship Program, a new scholarship for individuals pursuing two-year technical degrees in critical fields. 

The Good Life, Great Journey Scholarship Program allows NDOT to invest in future generations of Nebraskans by providing competitive and practical options for long-term career success that also supports the state’s transportation system. This scholarship program will provide recipients the necessary financial resources to fund their education while also giving them the opportunity to gain real world experience by interning at an NDOT facility. 

Those pursuing information technology, diesel technology, electronic systems/electrical technology, land surveying/GIS/civil engineering technology, drafting/design technology programs are eligible to apply for the program. Engineering programs with a transfer to a bachelor’s degree program will also be eligible. 

Eligible expenses for selected individuals include tuition, books, fees, housing and equipment. Additionally, successful candidates will work in a paid NDOT internship and will be eligible to be reimbursed for travel mileage between their residence and their designated NDOT internship location. Upon completion of the program, there will be an opportunity for full-time employment with NDOT.

This scholarship is open to anyone pursuing or interested in pursuing one of the approved programs, including graduating high school seniors, currently enrolled college students, current NDOT employees and the public.

• Iowa Western Community College – Council Bluffs, Neb.

• Metro Community College – Omaha, Neb.

The Community of Chadron Recycling Collection is back at the Nebraska Bank parking lot for the spring and summer season. The next scheduled event is Saturday, March 16, 2024. Trailers will be parked at Nebraska Bank, 205 West Third from 9:00 – 12:00. Monthly recycling events are currently scheduled for the third Saturday of each month.

Acceptable recyclables include Cardboard, Paperboard, Newspapers, Magazines, Tin &amp; Steel cans, Aluminum cans, Milk Jugs, #1 - #7 Plastics, Glass jars and bottles. The recyclables will be transported to the Keep Alliance Beautiful recycling facility.
