LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;–On Monday, Governor Jim Pillen addressed the need for more foster and adoptive families in Nebraska. Joined by First Lady Suzanne and surrounded by parents and their adoptive children, the Governor noted that more than 300 children have been adopted so far this year, but more still need placement in permanent homes.&nbsp;

“Every child, no matter their circumstance, deserves a loving, safe and caring home,” said Gov. Pillen. “It is vital we raise awareness of the need for more adoptive and foster families who can provide healthy and stable environments.”

Gov. Pillen discussed his own experience as a foster parent. His wife Suzanne brought their youngest son Izic home at four weeks of age. Izic is among those children officially adopted this year.

“Having 331 children adopted this year is a great cause for celebration and it has undoubtedly changed those families in an extraordinary way,” said Gov. Pillen. “The opportunity that remains is finding homes for the 200 other kids who are still waiting.”

Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Deputy Director Laura Opfer, of the Children and Family Services Division (CFS) is also an adoptive parent to three daughters. She highlighted the important role that foster care and kinship relationships have on children in need.

“We have 1,027 relative and kinship caregivers in Nebraska, who support their grandchildren, nieces, and nephews when they need support the most,” said Opfer. “In addition, we have 2,321 foster families who exemplify what it means to have perseverance, resilience and hope.”

Shannon Bingham, who was named Mrs. Midwest International 2024, has focused her past pageant platforms on adoption.

“As an adoption advocate, I’m honored to be here to encourage people to consider adoption as an option. And for those of you considering adopting a child or placing a child up for adoption, to help remove the hesitation and fear that comes along with the process.”

Bingham adopted her son, Seth Stickman following his birth. Now 16, he spoke about the benefits of being part of an adoptive family.&nbsp;

“I have many people I can count on who are willing to provide for me and care for me when needed. Without adoption, I wouldn’t have these people around me in such great numbers,” said Stickman.

The Nebraska Children and Home Society (NCHS) has a wide range of adoption planning and post-adoption support services available to birth parents and children, as well as adoptive, relative and kin caregivers. Teresa Frazier, program coordinator for NCHS’ Families Forever program, said families formed through adoption and guardianship can face unique and unexpected challenges, but help is readily available.

“Our Families Forever program helps with one-on-one parenting and family support, referrals to other services such as mental health and respite options, parent-to-parent mentoring, support groups, trainings, conferences and educational courses for caregivers as well as professionals,” noted Frazier.

Craig and Miranda Coleman described their journey from first becoming foster parents, to eventually, adopting their children Malachi and Nevaeh at the ages of 10 and seven, respectively.&nbsp;

“Our kids have made us better humans, more compassionate neighbors, more confident advocates, and taught us how to live looking forward,” said Miranda. “They have opened our world view and we are forever grateful we are a family.”

She also shared a statement from her son Malachi, who is currently a wide receiver on the Husker football team and an advocate for helping children in foster care through his foundation, Fly Like Chi. It read, in part: “The foster care system not only changed my life -- it saved it. It gave me the beautiful family I have today and has given me a second chance at life.”

“Love is a choice,” said Bingham. “Adoption brings awareness to how important it is to love and connect with family, no matter where they came from.”

As part of today’s event, Gov. Pillen signed a proclamation marking November as&nbsp;Adoption Month&nbsp;in Nebraska.

An Alliance man was sentenced on Monday to at least 17 years in prison for manufacturing child pornography.&nbsp;

&nbsp;30-year-old Angello Warfield was sentenced at Box Butte County Court at the Courthouse in Alliance on Monday, on one count of depiction of sexually explicit conduct, a class 1-D Felony.

Judge Derek Weimer of Sidney sentenced Warfield to a minimum of 17 years in prison and a maximum of 27 years, noting the seriousness in the case of the sexual exploitation of a child.

As a part of Nebraska law, Warfield will have to register as a sex offender. He will also be transferred to the Lincoln County Jail in North Platte to await sentencing in a separate case in Hooker County.

Alliance man sentenced to minimum 17 years in prison for sexual exploitation of child

It is with great sadness we announce the death of well-known entertainer and singer- songwriter Jim Salestrom. Jim passed away on Wednesday, November 22 surrounded by loved ones at his home in Arvada, CO after a decade-long battle with cancer. He was 67 years old.

James Kevin Salestrom impacted countless lives throughout his long and successful musical career. To his family he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. He was born February 20, 1956 in Omaha, NE to Virgil and Janice Salestrom. He is survived by his wife Pamela Dailer Salestrom, his daughter Casey, son-in-law Brandon Freeman and son James Salestrom Jr. of Nashville, TN. The true joy of his life was his grandson - Casey and Brandon’s son, Thomas James. Jim also dearly loved his brothers Chuck and Tom Salestrom and their families.

To his fans Jim was a joy to listen to, a world class singer-songwriter and an Emmy winning performer. His love of music started at the early age of 7 when he got his first guitar. As he got older, he started writing songs, and formed several groups in Nebraska with his brother Chuck. The most notable of these was Timberline, which further launched his career.&nbsp;

He played guitar and sang in Dolly Parton’s band over the course of decades. Her shows took him all over the world. Jim also had a close relationship with John Denver and performed with him throughout the years. He shared his love of life and positive spirit through his music. He worked with countless wonderful musicians and performed for 5 U.S. Presidents, and numerous members of the U.S. Supreme Court.

He treated everyone with love and respect. Jim was known for his humor, infectious smile, positive outlook on life and a gift to make everyone feel special. He sang like an angel, and luckily his music will endure long past his lifetime.&nbsp;In one of his final notes Jim said, “I am eternally grateful for all of you, and it’s not “goodbye”, it’s just “see you later”. Plans for memorial services will be announced on Jim Salestrom’s social media and website.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Department of Education recently released assessment ratings from the state and one Alliance elementary school improved its classification.

Alliance man faces sentencing on felony porn charges on Monday

Hemingford, Nebraska is celebrating its annual “Believe in Hemingford” Christmas Tree Lighting event. Hemingford started their Believe in Hemingford event to raise money for Christmas street light decorations. Now the free will donation will be given to a local family or families that are struggling this holiday season. This is a wonderful way for the community to come together this time of year. Nomination forms may be picked up at the Village office now&nbsp; and returned to the Village no later than November 28th at 5pm in a sealed envelope. All nominations will be passed to the selection committee and will remain anonymous.

This year’s Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held November 29th at 5pm in front of the Village office at 700 Box Butte Ave. There will be a Free will donation soup supper at the Fire Hall 5-7pm. Winter Storm Warning issued Thursday in Panhandle

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen, in accordance with a request from the White House, announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags be flown at half-staff to honor former first lady Rosalynn Carter. The order is effective Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, until sunset, on the day of Carter’s interment, Wednesday, Nov. 29.&nbsp;

The former first lady will be buried in Plains, Georgia, the hometown she shared with her husband, former President Jimmy Carter. She died on Nov. 19 at the age of 96.

Flags to Fly at Half-Staff in Honor of First Lady Rosalynn Carter

A pastor from Mitchell was arrested after Scottsbluff Police were informed that there may be stealing money from a church.

On Saturday, Nov. 18, Scottsbluff Police were dispatched to the United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff, where an employee informed officers that there was an Associate Pastor who appeared to be stealing money from the parish.

&nbsp;A press release from Scottsbluff Police says that officers were provided with bank statements showing numerous unauthorized ATM withdraws, from the Mitchell Methodist Church account, totaling more than $8,000.&nbsp;

Police determined that the only person who had access to the debit card was 42-year-old Pastor Joseph Schumacher Jr, of Mitchell.&nbsp;

It was also determined that Mitchell Methodist Church had written Pastor Joseph Schumacher Jr. a check for more than $4,000 to attend schooling which was not done.&nbsp; However, the check had been cashed.

The total amount of money that was taken by Schumacher Jr. is at least $12,000.

On Wednesday November 22, Schumacher Jr. was arrested for Unauthorized Use of a Financial Transaction Device more than $5,000 a Class IIA Felony and Theft by Deception more than $1,500 Less than $5,000 a Class IV Felony.

The City of Alliance proclaimed this Saturday as Small Business Saturday, Alliance Chamber of Commerce Director Owen Burnett thanks the city for the proclamation and encourages the public to shop local this holiday season.

"Small business is what keeps our town thriving, so it's great for the&nbsp; city to honor the small businesses in that way," Burnett said.&nbsp; "Obviously this a great week for shopping so we encourage everyone to buy local," Burnett said.

Burnett says that there will be extended hours at many Alliance businesses during the holiday season.

On Tuesday, the board of Nebraska Electric Generation and Transmission Cooperative&nbsp;(NEGT) voted to accept the Northwest Rural Public Power District (NRPPD) as their 21st member.

A press release by NRPPD states that they intend to sign an all-requirements wholesale power supply contract with NEGT, to deliver power and energy starting on May 1. 2024.&nbsp;

NRPPD is based out of Hay Springs and serves 3,300 accounts and over 1,900 miles of line in the Panhandle of Northwest Nebraska that includes Dawes, Sheridan and Cherry Counties.

Chance Briscoe, General Manager of NRPPD says that NEGT has a strong reputation for advocacy for its members. "Northwest Rural is excited to become their newest member," Briscoe said.

The contract between NRPPD and NEGT runs through 2035.

Wearing your seatbelt can save lives in rear-end collisions and other incidents, especially on high-traffic routes. Preparing for a fun day at Memorial Stadium should always include wearing your seatbelt the right way. Your seat belt should be placed across the middle of your chest, away from your neck, and across your hips, not your abdomen. Your seatbelt should never be behind your back or under your arm.&nbsp;

And once you’ve bucked up, put your phone down! At 55 miles per hour, sending or reading a text message takes the equivalent time of driving the entire length of a football field with your eyes closed. Your focus on the road is crucial for your safety and the safety of others.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Drivers should also prepare for potential traffic slowdowns before and after the game. NDOT recommends fans heading to the stadium consider the following routes:&nbsp;

Drivers traveling to Lincoln from the east should use the two left lanes on Interstate 80 (I-80) to allow traffic traveling to Nebraska Crossing to utilize the right lane.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Additionally, the southeast exit from Nebraska Crossing and the left turn lane on Nebraska Highway 31 will be closed.&nbsp;

When coming to the game, drivers arriving in Lincoln on I-80 from the west should take Exit 397 (south U.S. Highway 77 (US-77)) to Rosa Parks Way into downtown Lincoln. Drivers arriving in Lincoln on I-80 from the east should take Exit 401 to south Interstate 180 (I-180) into downtown Lincoln.&nbsp;

When leaving the game, drivers should avoid Exit 409 between Lincoln and Waverly as it may be closed due to safety concerns as heavy interstate traffic builds. This may significantly increase traffic on US-6 and cause slowdowns. Leaving downtown Lincoln immediately after the game can put you in heavy traffic. Spending some extra time in town may allow traffic to ease up and provide a smoother ride home.&nbsp;

Husker Fans, Buckle Up for Black Friday

Alliance Grocery Kart received the Small Business Partner Recognition Award from the Nebraska State Rehabilitation Council (SRC) in October. Grocery Kart was one of five Nebraska Vocational Rehabilitation partners to receive an award for their role in creating inclusive workplaces and advocacy for disability employment.

Nebraska Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) helps people with disabilities prepare for, find, and keep jobs. They also help businesses recruit, train, and retain employees with disabilities. Through this "dual client" approach, they assist individuals with injuries, illness, or impairments achieve competitive employment and increased independence. They also assist business owners and employers through full-service business consultation on a variety of business and disability-related areas.

Each year, Nebraska VR works with more than 6,000 of Nebraska residents with disabilities, and, last year, 1887 of those residents successfully entered the workforce.

The Alliance Grocery Kart is a full-service grocery store serving Alliance, Nebraska and surrounding communities. The location has 48 full and part-time employees and welcomes the chance to provide opportunities for Nebraska VR clients and students to learn about working in the grocery and retail field. Manager and Co-Owner Becky Maser values inclusion and works to ensure both students and clients have the support they need to have a successful on-the-job training or work-based learning experience.

Maser encourages employers to work with Nebraska VR. Clients come into the business and learn job skills by working with both the store and the VR trainer. Maser commented on how much her VR employees have grown. They learn skills quickly, and they want to learn additional aspects of a job, making it their career.

How do people become eligible for vocational rehabilitation services? They must have a diagnosed impairment or disability. This could be some type of physical, mental, emotional, or learning disability. The impairment must be an impediment to employment. That is, it has caused some problems in past or current employment, or would cause some problems preparing for and getting employment in the future. Finally, VR services would help the applicant obtain successful employment.

A client works with a counselor to explore work interests, work values, work preferences, work considerations, education and training, job skills, and job history. Chadron, NE, November 20, 2023&nbsp;–&nbsp;National Forest Service Road (NFSR) 723,&nbsp;commonly referred to as the “Cliffs” Road, will continue to be closed to through traffic as contractors have finalized replacement of the culvert near the Cliffs Picnic Area. This closure is approximately eight miles southwest of Chadron.&nbsp;The final concrete pour has been completed, but the new concrete must cure until December 6th&nbsp;prior to safely allowing through traffic on the new structure. “Road Closed” signs and barriers will remain in place until after the cement curing time is complete.

Tim Buskirk, Pine Ridge District Ranger said the old culvert was replaced, but the new structure is not safe for travel until December 6. “This work is important to improve public safety and to reduce future maintenance needs, but please heed traffic signage and barriers.”

Buskirk said that folks may still approach and access areas east of the Cliffs off Bordeaux Road via NFSR-723. The Job Corps Bypass immediately south of the Job Corps Center is the best access to the trailheads and vault toilets located near the Cliffs.

Buskirk also reminds visitors of increased fire danger as grasses are curing with the recent hot and windy days. Please stay on designated roads and trails; park in appropriate areas; do not park in tall grass; never leave a campfire unattended, and assure they are ‘dead-out’ prior to leaving your camp site.

There was a car crash in Alliance on Tuesday morning at around 8 am. 

Alliance Police Officer Joshua Norris tells Panhandle Post that the two-vehicle accident occurred at 14th St and Emerson. 

One person in a vehicle was transported by EMS to Box Butte General Hospital, for what Norris described as non-life-threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation.&nbsp;

Woman transported to BBGH after accident on Emerson 

The Scottsbluff Police Department are investigating the shooting death of a man last weekend in Scottsbluff.

In a press release by SPD, they say that they were alerted to a gunshot victim at Regional West Medical Center at about 11 pm on Sat, and the victim, Wilson George Coleman had been shot in the chest and later passed away due to the injuries. The shooting had happened in 1000 block of 15th Ave in Scottsbluff.

On Sunday, authorities arrested Annibal Domingo Jr. and as of this report was incarcerated on charges of 2nd Degree Murder and use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony. The investigation is ongoing.
