LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team swept Michigan 25-15, 25-12, 25-20 on Friday night in front of 8,815 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers improved to 26-0 and 17-0 in Big Ten play. With three matches to play, the Huskers need one more win to claim the outright Big Ten Championship. Nebraska's first opportunity to do so will be at Iowa on Sunday at 2 p.m.&nbsp;

The Huskers wrapped up the home portion of their regular season schedule with a perfect 17-0 record. The last time the Huskers went undefeated at home during the regular season was 2017.&nbsp;

Nebraska hit .368 in the match and held Michigan to .047. The Huskers had a 41-27 advantage in kills, 8-5 edge in blocks and 45-34 advantage in digs.&nbsp;

Andi Jackson had nine kills and hit .727 with three blocks, while Harper Murray had nine kills and five digs. Bekka Allick contributed seven kills on .700 hitting with five blocks, while Merritt Beason added seven kills and nine digs. Ally Batenhorst tallied five kills and four blocks.

Lexi Rodriguez finished the sweep with 15 digs and four set assists. Bergen Reilly had 28 assists, six digs and four kills.&nbsp;

Set 1: The Huskers scored the first three points and led 6-2 with Allick posting three kills early on. Another three-point run by the Huskers made it 12-7 with Murray posting back-to-back kills around an ace by Reilly. A kill by Beason and a block by Jackson and Batenhorst put the Big Red up 15-9. Five different Huskers contributed kills, and a block by Beason and Allick made it 23-13 Huskers. Nebraska went on to win 25-15, hitting .333 and holding Michigan to .026.&nbsp;

Set 2: The Huskers used a 6-0 run to turn a 5-3 lead into an 11-3 lead. Reilly had a kill before Jackson put down three in a row. Allick had two kills and a block with Reilly, and Murray recorded a kill as the Huskers increased the margin to nine at 19-10. Jackson added another kill as the Big Red went up 22-12, and Murray added a kill before a block with Jackson to finish off the set at 25-12. Nebraska hit .474 in set two, while Michigan hit -.067.&nbsp;

Set 3: Nebraska trailed 7-5 before going on a 6-1 run to take an 11-8 lead. Beason recorded two kills, and Batenhorst and Allick had back-to-back blocks. Batenhorst, Murray and Jackson notched kills to push the lead to four, 16-12. Michigan cut the lead in half before Murray terminated for the ninth time. The Wolverines crept within one, 19-18, but Allick had an answer, and Michigan committed a blocking error for a 21-19 Husker lead. Beason put down a kill before a block by Batenhorst and Jackson. Batenhorst then added a kill for a 24-19 match point, and the Huskers sealed the deal on a Michigan service error.&nbsp;

Huskers Sweep Wolverines in Regular-Season Home Finale Friday

CHADRON – Dr. Jim Powell, Chadron State College’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, announced Friday he plans to retire in June 2024. Powell has worked as an administrator at the college since 2015.

“Choosing to work at such a student-centered and remarkable institution like Chadron State College has been a career highlight for me,” Powell said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with fantastic colleagues who care deeply for students and their success. It was easy to come into work every day and I will truly miss this place and its people. We have accomplished a lot, but I’m eager to see what happens in the future because the potential for great things is there.”

Powell has been the top academic administrator at CSC since 2020. He was on the job for about eight weeks when the college decided to pivot to remote instruction during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Powell was instrumental in helping facilitate the change in course delivery and he’s continued to innovate. He has supported the development of new programs, including nutrition and dietetics, a master’s degree in athletic training, and new focus areas for the MBA.

“Dr. Powell has been a force for good at Chadron State College and he understands the changing landscape of higher education really well,” said President Ron K. Patterson. “He has provided a steady hand for the academic operation at CSC, led us through accreditation cycles with grace and humor, and he has helped position this college for continued success. I commend him for all he has accomplished, and I wish him well in retirement.”

Powell helped shepherd the institution through its successful four-year affirmation review through the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), worked to establish the college’s Quality Initiative for HLC, and assisted with programmatic accreditation. He was also heavily involved with strategic planning and he chaired many committees on campus.&nbsp;

“I had the amazing chance to work with a lot of talented people,” Powell said. “CSC truly is a teaching institution first, and its faculty are second to none. I am also appreciative of the staff I worked with because everyone truly had a passion for making CSC a better place to work and live.”

Prior to being named the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Powell was the Dean of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences from 2015 to 2020. Powell, who received both his bachelor’s degree in English Education and his master’s in Linguistics with a specialization in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages from Ball State University, began his teaching career as a middle school teacher in Indiana. He earned a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University and worked as an Assistant Professor at Ball State in Muncie, Indiana, for 13 years.

After Ball State, Powell worked at the University of Alaska-Anchorage for six years as Professor and Chair of Teaching and Learning before becoming a Professor and Director of the School of Education at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. He worked at Ferris State for three years before joining CSC’s administration.

Powell and his wife Karla, have two adult sons and four grandchildren.

Patterson said a national search for Powell’s replacement will begin in early 2024.

Chadron, NE — This Thanksgiving holiday, the Chadron Police Department is teaming up with&nbsp; the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on a high-visibility Click It or Ticket seat belt awareness campaign. From November 20 to November 27, the law enforcement community will be working together to reduce the number of fatalities that occur when vehicle passengers fail to buckle up. If they spot you, they will pull you over and issue a ticket. 

During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 2021 (6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24, to 5:59 a.m. on Monday, November 29), there were 361 passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes across the nation. Half (50%) were unrestrained. Not wearing a seat belt proved to be deadly at any time of the day during the holiday weekend: 52% of those killed in nighttime 

crashes were unbuckled, and 46% of those killed in daytime crashes also were unbuckled. These deaths represent needless tragedies for families across America and may have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt. 

“Buckle your seat belt to stay safe and to stay legal,” said Sgt. Chelsey Stolley. “Whether you’re driving cross-country or across the street, whether it is day or night, it is essential that you wear a seat belt. The bottom line is this: That seat belt may very well mean the difference between life and death. 

This Thanksgiving, and every day of the year, remember: Click It or Ticket.” In Chadron, the law requires “The driver, each front-seat occupant in the vehicle and all children six years of age and less than 18 years of age must wear occupant protection systems and all occupant protection systems worn are properly adjusted and fastened. 

All persons being transported by a motor vehicle operated by a holder of a provisional operator's permit or a school permit shall use occupant protection systems worn are properly adjusted and fastened. 

This is a secondary law, which means the driver is cited for this violation only if cited or charged with an additional violation or some other offense. The violation shall be assessed against the driver of vehicle result in a $25.00 fine.”

The Nebraska Extension will host Unit Cost of Production workshops in November and December to provide hands-on learning experiences for producers in calculating the unit cost of production for a cow-calf operation. 

The first workshop will be held on Nov. 28 and 29 at the Middle Niobrara NRD, in Valentine, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. CST. The second workshop will be on Dec. 5 and 6, at the 4-H Building in Kimball, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. MST.

Pre-register by calling the Nebraska Extension office in Cherry County at 402-376-1850 for the Valentine workshop or in Kimball at 308-235-3122 for the Kimball workshop. The pheasants will be released to enhance hunting opportunities over the extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend and encourage families to spend time together in the field. Non-toxic shot is required at Kirkpatrick Basin North, Peru Bottoms, Randall W. Schilling, and Wilkinson WMAs, but otherwise all usual regulations apply.

Nebraska’s pheasant, quail and prairie grouse seasons run through Jan. 31, 2024. Chadron Community Hospital Recognized for Performance Leadership 

On November 16 and 17, the Eagle Radio Holiday Auction will be LIVE on all Eagle Radio stations (KCOW 92.5FM/1400AM, Double Q Country 105.9FM/97.5FM, B94.7FM) beginning at 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday — powered by Chadron Community Hospital. 

Ten percent of our auction sales will go to support Chadron Community Hospital Circle of Light.

Bids will be accepted by calling (308) 762-1400. We will NOT be taking ANY bids on our Facebook pages. 

Once an hour has opened, you can bid on ANYTHING in that hour even if we haven't announced it yet on the air.

Most items will close in the same hour they are open to keep the auction running smoothly, with the exception of our "big ticket" items. Those items will be open and on the auction block for an extended period of time for our bidders convenience. ALL ITEMS MUST GO!

Provide us a phone number we can reach you back at. Our team will call each bidder back the same day, giving you an opportunity to increase your bid or to let you know you have won the item.

Provide a credit card to complete your purchase. All items can be picked up beginning the following week on Monday, November 20, at the media studios in Alliance and Chadron. NO items will be mailed out.&nbsp;

Our offices in both Alliance and Chadron will be closed to the public on November 16 and 17.

Eagle Radio Holiday Auction Sale Bill

Volunteers - lots of volunteers - are needed to be Bell Ringers. Bell Ringers make a major difference in how much money is collected for the programs the Salvation Army funds. 90% of the funds received will stay in Box Butte County.Volunteers can sign up to ring bells online at RegisterToRing.com or by calling Jessica Manion at 308-763-2167.Volunteers should greet people and be gracious, even with those who choose not to give. Don't ask people to put money in the kettle; just make it easy for them to do so!The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign for Box Butte County will begin earlier this year: the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. The campaign starts November 21st and runs through December 24th. Volunteers are needed to ring bells in both Alliance and Hemingford.In Alliance, there are three kettle locations: Grocery Kart, Bomgaars, and Carter’s Home, Hardware &amp; Appliance. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm and Saturday from 11:00 – 1:00 pm, 1:00 – 3:00 pm, and 3:00 – 5:00 pm.In Hemingford, volunteers ring bells at Raben’s Market on Friday from 3:00 – 5:00 pm and on Saturday from 11:00 – 1:00 pm.The Salvation Army will have miniature Red Counter Kettles (no bell ringers) that will be located at J&amp;J's Pitstop, Git'N Split, Grocery Kart Alcohol, and Raben’s Liquor.Donations may also be dropped off at FBNO in Alliance, or people can donate online at RegisterToRing.com by clicking Donate Now. Just like Red Kettle donations, these donations stay local. Checks should be made payable to The Salvation Army.Red kettle donations directly impact the lives of our neighbors by helping them in their time of need. The funds raised by Salvation Army bell ringers make a year-round impact to our community through grocery, prescription, utility, motel, and medical gas voucher assistance, as well as emergency services and stranded motorist assistance.
