The 2024 mountain lion hunting season in Nebraska’s Niobrara Unit closed Jan. 7 when the harvest sublimit of one female was met.

A 6-year-old collared female lion was shot north of Long Pine. The season opened Jan. 2.

In accordance with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s management objectives, the harvest of mountain lions allows the population to remain resilient and healthy, while slowing growth in the Niobrara Unit, and halting growth or moderately reducing the population size in the Pine Ridge Unit.

The Niobrara Unit was added to the Pine Ridge Unit for mountain lion hunting for the first time for the 2024 season. The Niobrara Unit encompasses parts of Brown, Cherry, Keya Paha, Rock and Sheridan counties.

Mountain lion presence has been documented in the Niobrara River Valley of north-central Nebraska since 2001. There has been a resident reproducing population there since 2013 and information gathered through research suggests a population that is growing and will be resilient to harvest.

This is the state’s seventh mountain lion harvest season; the first was in 2014. No mountain lions have been harvested in the Pine Ridge Unit this season as of Jan. 7.

Season 1 in the Pine Ridge Unit will continue through the end of February. The season will end immediately if the annual harvest limit of four mountain lions or sub-limit of two females are reached. An auxiliary season would be held March 16 through the end of March if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit are not reached during Season 1.

Mountain lion season ends in Niobrara Unit

Insects, weeds, and diseases were only a few of the topics at the 2024 Nebraska Extension Crop Production Clinic held on Jan. 3 in Gering. The annual meeting is one of eight the Extension hosts each year.&nbsp;

“We cover quite a few crop management topics and some agribusiness topics as well,” said Chris Proctor, Nebraska Extension associate educator and coordinator of the event. “There is a fair amount of research being conducted over the year that gets highlighted at these meetings. So, it’s a good place to come for updates and see what happened during the last growing season.”&nbsp;

The clinic also offers Pesticide Applicator Recertification, where applicators can renew their license. It is a legal requirement that commercial and private applicators renew their license every three years. “This is usually for commercial general standards in ag plant category,” said Frank Bright, Nebraska Extension pesticide safety associate.

Bright added that producers should keep an eye on the news, as chemical changes, including label changes. “They are current products. It’s just a new iteration of the label, and those change all the time.” The new labels are just a different way of measuring a pick list with different criteria. Instead of just windspeed and temperature, many other factors are measured, such as soil type, crop, and more.&nbsp;

In the Panhandle of Nebraska, more specialty crops are grown than in the east, predominately corn and soybeans. “We try to tailor the clinics to be more specific to the region,” Proctor said.&nbsp;

The clinic will move east across Nebraska and will look more at pests in corn and soybeans, weed management, and cropping systems.&nbsp;

Crop Clinic shares what’s new in agriculture with producers

When COVID-19 hit, it made sense and it was necessary, to identify a way to feed kids in need that didn’t require person-to-person interaction. The federally funded Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) was born from that era. It has now morphed into the Summer EBT program – one that front loads money onto cards for the purchase of $40 of groceries per child per month, capping at $120 per recipient.

Addressing food insecurity is important and necessary, but the S-EBT program is not necessary and it is not adequate to meeting the needs of children.&nbsp; I would be the first to admit that for a long time, I had blinders to the struggles that confront our communities – urban and rural. Handing out money is not enough to meet kid’s needs. They need much more.

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federal program that the state administers, which also provides no-cost food to kids. Unlike S-EBT, this program feeds kids in-person at a centralized location where they are guaranteed nutritious meals and snacks.&nbsp; In 2023, we had 245 such sites around the state operating in schools, churches, day camps and other locations, serving an estimated 20,000 kids.

The personal touchpoint of this program can’t be overlooked. Nebraska providers are trained to ensure that food options adhere to USDA nutrition guidelines. Kids are eating good meals, even when those meals are picked up or provided by delivery. Programs are located where education or enrichment activities take place. There is an opportunity for socialization with peers and on-site supervision and personal contact with adults who can spot signs in kids who have more needs than a meal. Sites usually have links to resources designed to support children and their families, as they hopefully, work their way out of food insecurity.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is another federal program administered by the state that provides food benefits to low-income families. In fiscal year (FY) 2023, 156,399 Nebraskans received SNAP benefits, at a cost of nearly $28 million a month. In addition to purchasing food, users have access to nutrition education and employment and training services.&nbsp;

Nebraska is committed to helping kids and families in need. Our programs are focused on more than simply providing food. They offer a hand up, not a handout.

Pillen: Meeting Needs of Hungry Kids in the Most Responsible Way

CHADRON – For its fall 2023 production, the Chadron State Theatre department presented What the Constitution Means to Me, directed by three students, Olivia Freeze, Halle Smith, and Josie Fritz.&nbsp; Each director selected a separate cast of three actors to perform the play, giving audiences a variety of interpretations of the same script.

According to American Theatre Magazine, at 16 productions across the country, What the Constitution Means to Me, a political drama by Heidi Schreck, is the most performed play of the 2023-24 season. Despite its humble production, the play addressed powerful issues such as civil rights, free speech, and bodily autonomy.

In a 2019 article following its Broadway debut, American Theatre praised its wide acclaim:

“It has no stars, a tiny cast, and no special effects, and everyone both onstage and backstage are Broadway newbies. And yet it has attracted a staggering amount of celebrities to its audience: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonya Sotomayor, Gloria Steinem, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson.” Yet, it is not CSC Theatre department’s first time covering difficult topics.

In 2017, CSC performed Stop Kiss, a self-described love story about two women who are assaulted after sharing a kiss in public. When one of them falls into a coma following her injuries, the rest of the cast ask themselves important questions about love, interpersonal relationships, and queer identity. Originally written and produced in 1998, Stop Kiss is a political story that examines the effects of violence and homophobia in realistic ways.

In a review for The Eagle, Hannah Clark wrote, “Diana Son, the author of the play, has called it political in reference to how politics is a way of looking at events that happen to people. But, overall, she deems the play as a love story. Not a play about homophobia or what it was like to live as a gay or lesbian person in America, but a love story.”

Two years prior, the department produced Extremities, a play about three women forced to reckon with a serial rapist. Although unsettling, this production featured important discussions about women’s rights and objectification. According to the Chadron State College factbook, the student body is majority female, emphasizing the importance of shows like Extremities and its discussion about uncomfortable subjects.

As the main characters talked about their experiences and argued about the best way to deal with the attacker, they revealed many real-life problems in our social and legal systems.

Taking a different, but equally impactful turn last fall, the department performed Larissa FastHorse’s The Thanksgiving Play, another top-performing show with a political focus. Featuring a small cast of four, it debuted on Broadway in 2023.

In Chadron, The Thanksgiving Play met a big response from audiences, drawing attention both on campus and in the community.

Olivia Freeze, a Bridgeport senior who played Logan, the main character, highlighted the need for diverse stories in rural areas.

“In a world full of division, it is necessary for us to take a step back and laugh at ourselves. It is a ridiculous story and a hilarious script. It is a lighthearted approach to cultural issues we see all over the media in our daily lives,” Freeze said.

Professor Scott Cavin said despite choosing scripts with small casts, CSC delivers exciting productions with meaningful messages.

In 2021, the department performed The Whale, a family drama by Sam Hunter. After its adaptation to film the following year, The Whale’s famous cast and compelling story gave it box office success, even with a cast of just four.

As with What the Constitution Means to Me, The Thanksgiving Play, Stop Kiss, and Extremities, The Whale examined themes that are relatable, but challenging to discuss.

According to Cavin, throughout its history, the college has aimed to present complex, thought-provoking stories through the medium of theatre. As one of the college’s most ambitious artistic groups, the department skillfully brings pressing topics to the Chadron community, Cavin said.

Hemingford boys basketball got a big win on Thursday, as the Bobcats dominated the Garden County Eagles 66-44.

Defense was big for Hemingford as they forced 21 Garden County turnovers, as the Bobcats ended an eight-game losing streak to improve to 2-8.

Hemingford has an opportunity to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, as they travel to 2-5 Minatare on Friday night.&nbsp;

In a statement, they said they will provide the students with a safe place to come to afterschool to finish homework, get tutoring on a subject, socialize and participate in activities.

The program will be held weekdays from Tuesday-Friday from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Those spring season changes that began in 2023:

New for 2024, the price of a nonresident turkey permit, including issuing fee, has increased from $128 to $143. The nonresident landowner permit cost rose from $65.50 to $73. All youth turkey permits remain $8.

The spring archery season opens March 25, youth shotgun on April 6, and the regular shotgun on April 13. All spring turkey seasons close May 31.

UNMC confers more than 400 degrees during winter commencement

A pediatric flu-related death in Panhandle Public Health District’s service area has been reported by Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

“We share our deepest condolences with the family in the loss of their loved one,” said Kim Engel, Director of Panhandle Public Health District.

In Nebraska, there have been a total of three flu-related deaths so far this season. Nationally, 20 children have died from flu this season.

Antiviral drugs like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) should be used as early as possible in people who have flu-like illness. For those who aren’t sick, common sense preventive measures along with flu vaccines can help prevent flu and other winter illnesses.

· Everyone six months and older be vaccinated for flu

· Avoiding contact with people who are sick

· Staying home from work, family gatherings and social functions if you’re sick

· Covering your mouth and nose when you cough with a tissue or sleeve, not your hands

· Eating healthy and getting plenty of rest

Influenza vaccination can reduce flu-related illnesses, visits to the doctor, missed work and school, and flu-related hospitalizations and deaths.

PPHD accepts most insurance and offers free Vaccines for Children (VFC), Vaccines for Adults, and Bridge Access Program (BAP) to support some vaccines. Call your local vaccine provider or PPHD at 308-633-2866 to confirm if you or your family are eligible for one of these free vaccine programs.

While flu can make anyone sick, certain people are at greater risk for serious complications:

· People with chronic lung disease (like asthma and COPD), diabetes (type 1 and 2), heart disease, neurologic conditions, and certain other long-term health conditions

· Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities

State Sen. John Fredrickson of Omaha on Wednesday introduced Legislative Bill 856, which would make all child care workers eligible for child care aid, regardless of their income.&nbsp;

Nebraska day care workers passing a criminal background check would be eligible for aid if they work at least 20 hours a week at a licensed day care facility or in-home day care.

Fredrickson modeled his proposal after Kentucky’s, which used pandemic relief funds to make child care cheaper for child care workers, many of whom earn too little to pay for day care.

The program attracted thousands more child care workers to the industry, and it opened up more slots in parts of the state without them,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2023/10/06/1203182131/kentucky-free-child-care-day-care-workers">including rural Kentucky</a>, researchers found.

It helped fund child care costs for an additional 3,200 child care workers, according to research by Kentucky Youth Advocates. Each new parent who entered the child care workforce helped another eight to 13 kids secure stable opportunities for care.&nbsp;

Kentucky is exploring how to maintain the expanded aid using state funds as pandemic-related federal funds run low. Iowa adopted its own pilot version of the aid program last year. Health officials in both states had no immediate comment, nor did the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Fredrickson’s push is one of several legislative proposals aimed at improving child care that state senators have said they would propose this year. Gov. Jim Pillen has made improved access to quality child care one of his priorities this session. Pillen had no immediate comment on LB 856.

The idea may have bipartisan support. Jim Vokal, chief executive officer of the free market think tank the Platte Institute, which leans conservative, said his organization is reviewing the bill and “hopes to support” it “down the road.”

First Five Nebraska says more than a fourth of Nebraskans live in child care “deserts.” The state saw its total child care workforce fall by 11% from 2018 to 2022, First Five found.

Katie Bass, data and policy research adviser for First Five, said LB 856 could help stabilize the state’s child care workforce that today turns over at about a 30% rate.

Surveys show that Nebraska child care workers often leave for jobs in retail and fast food because of higher pay, she said.

“The Kentucky folks have said it is a recruitment and retention strategy,” Bass said. “This would be a benefit, a way to compete with those industries when you’re struggling to compete.”

JANUARY 3, 2024 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol removed from the road 65 impaired drivers during the holiday season.

During the final two weeks of 2023, troopers participated in the national&nbsp;Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over&nbsp;campaign. The campaign ran from December 15 through January 1 and included hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the country.

“The holidays are always a busy time of year on Nebraska roadways, and with a winter storm right in the middle this year, our troopers were working around the clock to keep roads safe,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol.

During the campaign, troopers made 65 arrests for driving under the influence. Troopers also cited 985 drivers for speeding, including 51 drivers for traveling at 100 miles per hour or higher. Citations were also issued for no seat belt (15), improper child restraint (14), open alcohol container (31), minor in possession of alcohol (35), and driving under suspension (111). Troopers also performed 656 motorist assists and responded to 123 crashes during the campaign.

The&nbsp;Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over&nbsp;effort was made possible thanks in part to grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation - Highway Safety Office.

Nebraska State Patrol Troopers Arrest 65 Impaired Drivers During Holiday Season

United Way of Western Nebraska’s AmeriCorps Seniors Program will be joining in with the Nebraska AmeriCorps Seniors initiative on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Volunteers will honor Dr. King's legacy by serving their communities. In Scotts Bluff County, volunteers will collect food and paper goods for local emergency food pantries and banks, contributing to the nationwide effort of hundreds of thousands of Americans engaging in volunteer service.

From January 15-19, the community can drop off items at Riverstone Bank Scottsbluff or Gering locations or at the United Way of Western Nebraska office.

Observed each year on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and improve their communities. AmeriCorps has been charged with leading this effort for more than a quarter century. United Way of Western Nebraska and Americorps to Unite in Service on MLK Day

The Nebraska Extension is hosting two hands-on Calving Workshops on Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. MT at the South Platte NRD Building in Sidney and Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. CT at the NCTA Livestock Teaching Center in Curtis.

The workshops will be led by Becky Funk, DVM and Extension Specialist, and Lindsay Waechter-Mead, DVM and Extension Educator. Topics covered will include calving equipment and proper use, techniques for managing dystocia, when to call for help, and hands-on demonstration and training using a life-size model cow and calf.

Preparing for the calving season can help minimize calf loss and reduce stress on those caring for the cowherd. These hands-on workshops will cover how to correct common malpresentations and approach handling difficult births.

“Pay attention to the nutrition needs of bred heifers and cows prior to calving. Adequate body condition at calving is important as it impacts cow stamina during delivery of the calf, colostrum quality, calf vigor, and subsequent rebreeding,” said Aaron Berger, Nebraska Extension beef educator.&nbsp;

Producers should discuss their herd health plan with their veterinarian. To manage where they can reduce risk and address ways to prevent health problems that have been an issue before. Other aspects of preparation include examining calving facilities, checking gates, pens, alleys, and head catches, and fixing or replacing broken items. Check lights and have replacement bulbs on hand.

“You should also make sure you have a good supply of plastic sleeves, obstetrical lube, obstetrical chains or straps, esophageal feeders, and calf feeding bottles. Make sure your fetal extractor (calf puller) is clean and working properly,” he said.

It’s also good to have colostrum or colostrum replacement products on hand. The calf’s ability to absorb immunoglobulin antibodies across the intestine decreases rapidly six to 12 hours after birth. “It is critical the calf receives colostrum during this time. If the quality or quantity of the colostrum is a concern, consult your veterinarian as to which replacement products are best,” Berger said.&nbsp;

Weather is another consideration, and producers should be aware calves born during cold, wet conditions can quickly succumb to hypothermia. For mild hypothermia (body temperature between 94 and 100°F), giving a calf warm, body temperature colostrum or colostrum replacement products and drying the calf off with towels and warm air can quickly bring a calf’s temperature back to normal. Providing wind protection and a clean, dry environment will keep stress and disease occurrence low.

By Aaron Berger, Beef Educator, Nebraska Extension, and Chabella Guzman, PREEC CommunicationsThe Nebraska Extension is hosting two hands-on Calving Workshops on Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. MT at the South Platte NRD Building in Sidney and Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. CT at the NCTA Livestock Teaching Center in Curtis.The workshops will be led by Becky Funk, DVM and Extension Specialist, and Lindsay Waechter-Mead, DVM and Extension Educator. Topics covered will include calving equipment and proper use, techniques for managing dystocia, when to call for help, and hands-on demonstration and training using a life-size model cow and calf.Preparing for the calving season can help minimize calf loss and reduce stress on those caring for the cowherd. These hands-on workshops will cover how to correct common malpresentations and approach handling difficult births.“Pay attention to the nutrition needs of bred heifers and cows prior to calving. Adequate body condition at calving is important as it impacts cow stamina during delivery of the calf, colostrum quality, calf vigor, and subsequent rebreeding,” said Aaron Berger, Nebraska Extension beef educator.&nbsp;Producers should discuss their herd health plan with their veterinarian. To manage where they can reduce risk and address ways to prevent health problems that have been an issue before. Other aspects of preparation include examining calving facilities, checking gates, pens, alleys, and head catches, and fixing or replacing broken items. Check lights and have replacement bulbs on hand.“You should also make sure you have a good supply of plastic sleeves, obstetrical lube, obstetrical chains or straps, esophageal feeders, and calf feeding bottles. Make sure your fetal extractor (calf puller) is clean and working properly,” he said.It’s also good to have colostrum or colostrum replacement products on hand. The calf’s ability to absorb immunoglobulin antibodies across the intestine decreases rapidly six to 12 hours after birth. “It is critical the calf receives colostrum during this time. If the quality or quantity of the colostrum is a concern, consult your veterinarian as to which replacement products are best,” Berger said.&nbsp;Weather is another consideration, and producers should be aware calves born during cold, wet conditions can quickly succumb to hypothermia. For mild hypothermia (body temperature between 94 and 100°F), giving a calf warm, body temperature colostrum or colostrum replacement products and drying the calf off with towels and warm air can quickly bring a calf’s temperature back to normal. Providing wind protection and a clean, dry environment will keep stress and disease occurrence low.The cost to attend is $30. Students attend for free.
