The Scottsbluff Police Department are investigating the shooting death of a man last weekend in Scottsbluff.

In a press release by SPD, they say that they were alerted to a gunshot victim at Regional West Medical Center at about 11 pm on Sat, and the victim, Wilson George Coleman had been shot in the chest and later passed away due to the injuries. The shooting had happened in 1000 block of 15th Ave in Scottsbluff.

On Sunday, authorities arrested Annibal Domingo Jr. and as of this report was incarcerated on charges of 2nd Degree Murder and use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony. The investigation is ongoing.

Keep Alliance Beautiful does not retrieve curbside recycling, cardboard or anything else with full-size sanitation-style trucks like those owned by the City of Alliance and H &amp; H Sanitation. Until today (November 16) our crew went from Point A to Points B, C and beyond and back to the recycling center in two well-worn white pickups. Before lunch, however, a green 1997 Ford F150 4x4 officially joined the fleet (two is a couple, three’s a fleet I’m sure of it). This was the every other Thursday when we visit Hemingford area businesses and empty both trailers, so we immediately put the much appreciated vehicle into service. Transportation, especially hauling capacity, is on my mind as I sit typing at the Bean Broker in downtown Chadron listening to Wilson Yee sing and tickle the ivories. Not quite my usual subdued living room spot, but it has been my alternative as I write when my daughter is practicing gymnastics. I’ll be back here on Saturday for Chadron’s monthly community drive up recycling collection. Tuesday of the short Thanksgiving week is our scheduled day to fill the same green oblong trailer with cardboard and plastic at a drinking water plant near Gordon. The aforementioned tasks will still be accomplished with our newer gasoline-powered white pickup. The older white diesel pickup will continue to schlep the white totes and larger loose loads with the assistance of a rear lift and sidewall racks. I envision the green pickup as a utility infielder, able to tackle smaller and medium jobs (such as delivering donations to Community Table) when the other two are otherwise occupied.

“Green” is no stranger to the recycling center’s main bay. The businessman who sold the vehicle to KAB for a very reasonable price backed in regularly with a load. Everything was sorted and did not often require much time to sort and process. Each visit was a testament to how his establishment served the community. Recycling, at least how we receive it, provides a fitting barometer of commerce for the county’s environmentally conscious merchants.

Who knows where Green rambled when he was new. Twenty years plus since driving off the lot it felt like recycling was a way for the well-kept pickup to still contribute regularly. Pickups can serve businesses and organizations for decades in many capacities, saving money for nonprofits that cannot afford more updated vehicles. As I have mentioned before, the KAB diesel was a longtime Pepsi truck based in Alliance.

Finding a third pickup checked a box on our wishlist as KAB strives to complement the manual labor involved in our system. With more material coming in currently than our 100-plus tons shipped out each quarter we are searching for donated/affordable trailers that could better serve locations than multiple totes. Grander plans include a fourth baler and another, more compact, forklift.

Regardless of the number of pickups and trailers (or their color), the challenge is finding the best way to meet growing demand. A belated happy America Recycles Day – Nov. 15. My thoughts tonight are on the same wavelength as the 2023 theme: Recycling Is Innovative. We always welcome suggestions and volunteers. Every half-ton bale still feels significant to me several years after I helped wire my first one. There are times when anxiety creeps in because “you never truly get ahead,” yet I take solace in the fact that this many people embrace a simple way to make a difference in our world.

K9 Sukey’s vest is sponsored by Leah A. Beale of Oklahoma City, OK and will be embroidered with the sentiment “This gift of protection provided by Leah Beale”. Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and NIJ certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 5,350 vests to K9s in all 50 states at a value of $6.9 million, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

The 2023 Holiday season is upon us, so the Chadron Police Department is getting prepared for the annual “Shop with a Cop” program. All donations raised are used to purchase food, clothing, and gifts, for less fortunate children within our community. Officers take Chadron School children shopping to get things needed as well as a few things wanted. It is also a great way for the officers and children to get to know each other. The experiences are always a fun and exciting, and sometimes interesting, time for both the children and the officers.

As the month of December nears, look for donation containers near the registers of some of our businesses in town. Donations can also be brought in or mailed to the Chadron Police Department at 125 Main Street Chadron NE 69337.

A new business in Alliance that aims to empower others through strength and active living held their ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday afternoon in downtown Alliance.

The Bricktown Gym opened five weeks ago at 308 Box Butte Ave, and their slogan is "get built on the bricks."

Nikki Merrill is the Owner, Personal trainer &amp; Nutritionist of Brickhouse Gym and says that they started out of her home in Hemingford before migrating to Alliance and describes what services she offers.

"Currently we offer 24-hour gym access for anyone who wants to come in, but on the training side of things I do one-on-one and group, which is 2-3 people together. 

There are personalized programs based on assessments and consultations, nutrition education and I also do orthopedics so chronic pain, rehab and things like that that I can offer people one-on-one too."

Merrill says that the Brickhouse Gym has some characteristics that makes it a unique gym facility in Alliance.

"I think that having a downtown location helps, especially with people who are working and need to come over on lunch breaks or right after work, it makes that accessibility easier." Merrill said.&nbsp; Also having a bigger space for training, we're a private gym space that is adult only and that sets us apart a little bit, offering some options that aren't currently being offered right now.&nbsp;

Membership prices are $36 dollars for four weeks for one-person, personal training for one person is $119 for six weeks.&nbsp;

Brickhouse Gym Holds ribbon cutting ceremony in downtown Alliance

The Scottsbluff Police Department reports that there was a fatal rollover car crash in Scottsbluff on Saturday.

Scottsbluff police responded to the 1300 block of 14th Ave in Scottsbluff at 10:06 p.m. on Saturday night to investigate an accident.

They found that a black GMC pickup driven by 55-year-old Fredrick Evans was driving southbound on 14th Ave from East 15th when the vehicle crossed left of center and hit a red 2o12 GMC pickup.&nbsp;

The vehicle rolled over onto its right side, as Evans was not wearing a seatbelt.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Police are investigating health conditions and alcohol use as protentional contributing factors. Scottsbluff Police were assisted on scene by Scottsbluff Fire Dept, Valley Ambulance Service, and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Deputies.

LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team swept Michigan 25-15, 25-12, 25-20 on Friday night in front of 8,815 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers improved to 26-0 and 17-0 in Big Ten play. With three matches to play, the Huskers need one more win to claim the outright Big Ten Championship. Nebraska's first opportunity to do so will be at Iowa on Sunday at 2 p.m.&nbsp;

The Huskers wrapped up the home portion of their regular season schedule with a perfect 17-0 record. The last time the Huskers went undefeated at home during the regular season was 2017.&nbsp;

Nebraska hit .368 in the match and held Michigan to .047. The Huskers had a 41-27 advantage in kills, 8-5 edge in blocks and 45-34 advantage in digs.&nbsp;

Andi Jackson had nine kills and hit .727 with three blocks, while Harper Murray had nine kills and five digs. Bekka Allick contributed seven kills on .700 hitting with five blocks, while Merritt Beason added seven kills and nine digs. Ally Batenhorst tallied five kills and four blocks.

Lexi Rodriguez finished the sweep with 15 digs and four set assists. Bergen Reilly had 28 assists, six digs and four kills.&nbsp;

Set 1: The Huskers scored the first three points and led 6-2 with Allick posting three kills early on. Another three-point run by the Huskers made it 12-7 with Murray posting back-to-back kills around an ace by Reilly. A kill by Beason and a block by Jackson and Batenhorst put the Big Red up 15-9. Set 3: Nebraska trailed 7-5 before going on a 6-1 run to take an 11-8 lead. Beason recorded two kills, and Batenhorst and Allick had back-to-back blocks. Batenhorst, Murray and Jackson notched kills to push the lead to four, 16-12. Michigan cut the lead in half before Murray terminated for the ninth time. The Wolverines crept within one, 19-18, but Allick had an answer, and Michigan committed a blocking error for a 21-19 Husker lead. Beason put down a kill before a block by Batenhorst and Jackson. Huskers Sweep Wolverines in Regular-Season Home Finale Friday

CHADRON – Dr. Jim Powell, Chadron State College’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, announced Friday he plans to retire in June 2024. Powell has worked as an administrator at the college since 2015.

“Choosing to work at such a student-centered and remarkable institution like Chadron State College has been a career highlight for me,” Powell said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with fantastic colleagues who care deeply for students and their success. It was easy to come into work every day and I will truly miss this place and its people. We have accomplished a lot, but I’m eager to see what happens in the future because the potential for great things is there.”

Powell has been the top academic administrator at CSC since 2020. He was on the job for about eight weeks when the college decided to pivot to remote instruction during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Powell was instrumental in helping facilitate the change in course delivery and he’s continued to innovate. He has supported the development of new programs, including nutrition and dietetics, a master’s degree in athletic training, and new focus areas for the MBA.

“Dr. Powell has been a force for good at Chadron State College and he understands the changing landscape of higher education really well,” said President Ron K. Patterson. “He has provided a steady hand for the academic operation at CSC, led us through accreditation cycles with grace and humor, and he has helped position this college for continued success. I commend him for all he has accomplished, and I wish him well in retirement.”

Powell helped shepherd the institution through its successful four-year affirmation review through the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), worked to establish the college’s Quality Initiative for HLC, and assisted with programmatic accreditation. He was also heavily involved with strategic planning and he chaired many committees on campus.&nbsp;

“I had the amazing chance to work with a lot of talented people,” Powell said. “CSC truly is a teaching institution first, and its faculty are second to none. I am also appreciative of the staff I worked with because everyone truly had a passion for making CSC a better place to work and live.”

Prior to being named the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Powell was the Dean of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences from 2015 to 2020. Powell, who received both his bachelor’s degree in English Education and his master’s in Linguistics with a specialization in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages from Ball State University, began his teaching career as a middle school teacher in Indiana. He earned a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University and worked as an Assistant Professor at Ball State in Muncie, Indiana, for 13 years.

After Ball State, Powell worked at the University of Alaska-Anchorage for six years as Professor and Chair of Teaching and Learning before becoming a Professor and Director of the School of Education at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. He worked at Ferris State for three years before joining CSC’s administration.

Powell and his wife Karla, have two adult sons and four grandchildren.

Patterson said a national search for Powell’s replacement will begin in early 2024.

Chadron, NE — This Thanksgiving holiday, the Chadron Police Department is teaming up with&nbsp; the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on a high-visibility Click It or Ticket seat belt awareness campaign. From November 20 to November 27, the law enforcement community will be working together to reduce the number of fatalities that occur when vehicle passengers fail to buckle up. If they spot you, they will pull you over and issue a ticket. 

During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 2021 (6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24, to 5:59 a.m. on Monday, November 29), there were 361 passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes across the nation. Half (50%) were unrestrained. Not wearing a seat belt proved to be deadly at any time of the day during the holiday weekend: 52% of those killed in nighttime 

crashes were unbuckled, and 46% of those killed in daytime crashes also were unbuckled. These deaths represent needless tragedies for families across America and may have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt. 

“Buckle your seat belt to stay safe and to stay legal,” said Sgt. Chelsey Stolley. “Whether you’re driving cross-country or across the street, whether it is day or night, it is essential that you wear a seat belt. The bottom line is this: That seat belt may very well mean the difference between life and death. 

This Thanksgiving, and every day of the year, remember: Click It or Ticket.” In Chadron, the law requires “The driver, each front-seat occupant in the vehicle and all children six years of age and less than 18 years of age must wear occupant protection systems and all occupant protection systems worn are properly adjusted and fastened. 

All persons being transported by a motor vehicle operated by a holder of a provisional operator's permit or a school permit shall use occupant protection systems worn are properly adjusted and fastened. 

This is a secondary law, which means the driver is cited for this violation only if cited or charged with an additional violation or some other offense. The violation shall be assessed against the driver of vehicle result in a $25.00 fine.”

The Nebraska Extension will host Unit Cost of Production workshops in November and December to provide hands-on learning experiences for producers in calculating the unit cost of production for a cow-calf operation. 

The first workshop will be held on Nov. 28 and 29 at the Middle Niobrara NRD, in Valentine, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. CST. The second workshop will be on Dec. 5 and 6, at the 4-H Building in Kimball, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. MST.

Pre-register by calling the Nebraska Extension office in Cherry County at 402-376-1850 for the Valentine workshop or in Kimball at 308-235-3122 for the Kimball workshop. While making a warrant arrest in Terrytown, a female yelled continuously at Officers despite them asking her to be quiet. She kept trying to approach us to the point that I had to spend time watching her instead of assisting in the arrest. After the man with the warrant was transported she continued to yell. I decided to arrest her. Chyronda Saunders, 34 of Terrytown was taken to jail and booked for disturbing the peace and obstruction.
