CHADRON – A special session for art teachers during Chadron State College’s Art Day Tuesday showcased Paint the Town, a project including more than a dozen murals on buildings in downtown Chadron, and most recently, a city water tank about 15 miles south of Chadron along Highway 385.

Chadron Public Schools Art teacher and CSC alum Travis Hencey said the session he and Chadron Area Chamber of Commerce Director Gabby Michna presented about Paint the Town and Art Alley provided some valuable insights about resources.

“I think Art teachers get asked by their schools and communities to do a lot of large projects. So, we tried to share some information on how to go about it in a way that's not as time-intensive or money-intensive. We wanted to make it seem doable, instead of just another thing they are being asked to do,” Hencey said.

Jessica Klassen from Bayard Public Schools teaches K-12 Art and photography and advises the yearbook staff. She’s done a few murals inside the high school with students and plans to start a new one this month.

“As for the presentation on Art Alley, I was very interested to see how to bring a community together to create art as a whole. It seems like Chadron has developed a good system for creating quality while still incorporating all skill levels. It seems like the community is willing to donate work and help provide supplies,” Klassen said.

Klassen said she found the session particularly useful since some Bayard community residents have asked her to paint downtown murals.

“I've been curious how to make that happen. This presentation made it seem like there are answers and there are people who have figured out how to make it work,” she said.

Klassen thinks CSC’s Art Day is a positive opportunity for students and educators.

“I love giving my kids the opportunity to see what it's like to be in college classes. Art Day opens them up to more possibilities than I can offer, which is wonderful. I love getting time to see other art teachers and talk with them about things they're doing in their classes,” Klassen said.

Kathy Brock from&nbsp;Alliance, Nebraska, said she wasn’t aware of Chadron’s Art Alley until she received the invitation to attend Art Day. She and her students painted one mural in&nbsp;Alliance&nbsp;about 10 years ago and the CSC session prompted her to think about the possibilities for more murals in&nbsp;Alliance. Following the event, she took her students to see the murals in downtown Chadron.

Kira Dermatis, Tavian Urban, and Addison Neville from Edgemont, South Dakota, also attended Art Day.

Dermatis found the graphic novel session especially helpful since she is working on something similar for her senior project.

“I've seen a lot of different creativity today and it's just kind of cool,” she said.

Urban said the session about graphic design was fascinating.

“I've never done anything like that and didn't really understand how it worked. But now I have a much better understanding,” Urban said.

Neville said she discovered some unique, in-depth, and interesting aspects of art.

CSC sophomore Maya Goss of Cheyenne, Wyoming, taught a session at Art Day for the second time. Her topic was graphic novels.

“I'm not normally teaching, so it was a little awkward, but pretty fun because we were talking about graphic novels, something I'm passionate about. It seems like the groups got together and talked well with each other while working on storyboards and thumbnail sketches,” Goss said.

Raquel Moore of Beatrice, Nebraska, taught four different watercolor techniques even though she is a Psychology major with a minor in Criminal Justice. She has painted commissioned art pieces and is taking a painting class as an elective and jumped at the opportunity when Mary Donahue asked her to lead a session.

“A lot of the students are really good. They quickly catch on to the gradient shift technique, blending two colors or fading one color from light to dark. One of the things a lot of them struggle with is the single-stroke technique, just letting the paint be where it's at. I struggle with that, too. This technique is used in a lot of impressionist paintings and that's why I think a lot of them are so well known and liked. Even without the perfect brushstroke, you can tell what you're looking at,” Moore said.

Art Day at CSC provides connections for teachers; ideas for students

Nebraska Game and Parks will decommission and remove the dam at Carter P. Johnson Lake at Fort Robinson State Park for the safety of the public. Once the dam is removed, Soldier Creek will be restored to a natural flowing state.

The 480-foot-long earthen dam, built in 1935, was reclassified as a high-hazard-potential dam in February 2020 by the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources. It has since been found to be deficient in three areas that could lead to its sudden or complete failure. These include:

Should the dam fail, the potential for loss of life at Soldier Creek Campground and across U.S. Highway 20, both about 4½ miles downstream, is unacceptable to both Game and Parks and NeDNR.

Since 2020, Game and Parks has worked with engineering and environmental consultants to identify solutions that would avoid removing the dam. Consultants estimated it would cost at least $11 million to replace the dam with a structure that meets the more rigorous design and safety standards required of dams classified as high hazard.

In late 2023, Game and Parks developed plans to safely remove the dam and restore this section of Soldier Creek in a manner that would enhance the trout fishery and public access on portions of the creek above and below the current lake.

“Our goal is to mitigate the loss of Carter P. Johnson Lake with enhanced angling opportunities in Soldier Creek,” said Jim Swenson, Game and Parks deputy director. “Soldier Creek is a popular destination in northwest Nebraska for anglers seeking trout fishing opportunities."

“We know the lake holds a special place in the hearts and minds of those living in northwest Nebraska, the guests who have visited there, as well as staff who have invested time and talent into maintaining the lake and providing fishing opportunities,” he added. “This is a difficult but necessary decision. Fortunately, and thanks to our Fisheries team, we have recently worked to enhance angling opportunities at Fort Robinson and make stream enhancements in the region, each of which offer excellent and diverse fishing opportunities.”

Recent renovations and angler access improvements have been made at the three Ice House Ponds, three Grable ponds and Cherry Creek Pond at Fort Robinson. These built upon already good fishing opportunities at Soldier Creek, Wood Reserve Ponds, White River and Cherry Creek Diversion Pond.&nbsp;

Game and Parks is committed to continuing to provide quality fisheries at lakes and streams throughout the region and will continue to improve access to those water bodies at Fort Robinson SP.

With the changing demands of the economy of scale, both Cooperative Boards recognize the potential benefits of unifying their organizations. The Boards of Directors for FCE and PCA would like to announce they have signed a letter of intent to explore the potential unification of the two Cooperatives.

Management and the Boards are excited about this potential merger, seeing an opportunity to combine their expertise, resources, and strategies. Throughout the process to date, we have learned both cooperatives share similar values. The agricultural landscapes, climates, and needs of each Cooperative have some variation, which means the unified cooperative will find creative solutions to serve all members effectively. This will be accomplished by establishing specialized divisions within the organization dedicated to agronomy, grain, livestock feed and management, energy, market analysis, and retail grocery, ensuring we make the most of the unique strengths of each Cooperative. This approach will empower patrons to retain their insights and expertise, while also benefiting from the collective power of the larger, unified cooperative.

A merger of the two Cooperatives will offer patrons a broader range of services, increased access to markets, and the potential for improved bargaining power, which will lead to mutual growth and strengthen the agricultural industry in the entire region. These advantages will not stop at the farm gate. The unified cooperative will continue to invest in local infrastructure, educational programs, and social initiatives, enriching the lives of both farmers and non-farming residents alike.

The Boards are currently working on a new name for the unified cooperative, updated By-Laws, and a Plan for Merger. These documents are expected to be made available to the membership of each Cooperative in early December for membership review and approval through a mail-in ballot. Informational meetings will be held for members of both cooperatives in mid-December with each Cooperative holding a special meeting to certify the vote count occurring after the informational meetings. Subject to each Cooperative Board and member approval, the unification is anticipated to be effective on March 1, 2024.

A Gordon teenager was recently charged with first degree murder in the death of her newborn baby.

&nbsp; Court documents received by Panhandle Post from Sheridan County Court lists the teen as 16-year-old Chloe D Coplen Anderson and say that Anderson birthed a baby on the evening of Nov. 6th, police responded to a call of an infant being born and they found that the baby had stab wounds to the chest and a cut to the throat when they arrived.

&nbsp;Anderson faces a 1st-Degree Murder charge, a Class 1A Felony, and Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony. She is being charged as an adult.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 16.

Gordon teen accused of killing newborn baby, in Court on Thu

CHADRON – The results of Chadron State College’s 60th&nbsp;Scholastic Contest have been released. Rapid City Stevens High School placed first in Division I, followed by Scottsbluff in second place, Gering in third, and Alliance in fourth place.

The Division II champion was Chadron, followed by Burns, Wyoming, and Mitchell in third.

The Division IV winner was Hay Spring High School, followed by Bayard, Ainsworth, and Wall, South Dakota.

Alliance High places 4th at CSC Scholastic Contest

The Carnegie Arts Center in Alliance held their annual Fundraiser on Saturday called Gala Night of Giving.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kyren Gibson, Executive Director of the Carnegie Arts Center talks about how the event went.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"It was an incredible turnout, I'm so grateful," Gibson said. "Everybody who put their heart and soul into this event is so excited to see the turnout."

She also describes some of the artists and art on display on Saturday.&nbsp;

"We were so graced by Yelena Khanevskya to be our exhibiting artist tonight in the upper galleries, and we are also very fortunate to have Mike Hesser who is our studio gallery artist as well," Gibson said. "Both artists complimented this event beautifully and we are so fortunate to have them."

Yelena’s exhibit titled “100 Western Skies” will be on display until Dec 2nd. She is an art instructor at WNCC and owner of Gallery B in Scottsbluff, NE.

&nbsp;Hesser’s work “Time Extended.” will run from September October 17th&nbsp;– December 9th.&nbsp;

Gibson says they exceeded the goal amount of 8,000 that they set in for the fundraiser and that the money that they raised is for general operations for the Carnegie Arts Center.

ALLIANCE- 16 young ladies from across the state gathered on Saturday night to compete in the Miss Alliance and Miss Alliance’s Teen pageant.&nbsp; Katelyn Bowers, the daughter of Melissa and Derrald Bowers of North Platte, was named Miss Alliance 2024.&nbsp; Bowers also placed 1st&nbsp;in the optional community service competition.&nbsp;

Your new Miss Panhandle 2024 is Riley Wright, the daughter of Bridget Raben and Mick Wright of Hemingford while Olivia Terwey, the daughter of Trevor and Abby Terwey of Hastings, earned the new local title of Miss Niobrara River 2024.&nbsp; Terwey also placed 2nd&nbsp;in community service.&nbsp; Desteny Miller, the daughter of Cherry Wulf of Arapahoe, was named the Miss Alliance 1st&nbsp;runner up.&nbsp;

Miss Alliance’s Teen 2024 is Hemingford resident Madi Meek, the daughter of Jennifer and Brett Cullan.&nbsp; Ella-Kathryn Anderson, daughter of Mark and Irene Anderson of Scottsbluff, earned the title of Miss Panhandle’s Teen 2024.&nbsp; Meek was named the Teen Miss Congeniality winner and Anderson earned the Teen Audience Choice award.&nbsp;

To ensure safe access to the Senior Center located at 212 Yellowstone Avenue, the Alliance Police Department are asking patrons to begin at the northeast corner of East 2nd&nbsp;Street and Yellowstone Avenue. Traffic will line up down East 2nd&nbsp;to Potash Avenue on the north side of the street.

Mobile Food Pantry on Wed in Alliance

Educators across Nebraska and South Dakota were part of the inaugural class for the Automation in the Heartland workshop in October at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center in Scottsbluff. The class is funded through the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to give educators a beginning in coding, building microcontroller sensors, and understanding automation systems in agriculture.&nbsp;

“It is one of the areas that is standard for ag education but hasn’t been really taught,” said Troy White, UNL Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication Department lecturer in Scottsbluff. Skilled and Technical Science teachers across Nebraska teach coding and automation, and White wants to get the ag educators involved.

The two-year cohort will focus on the Arduino microcontroller running various sensors and using the controller to run Computer Numerical Control (CNC). This year educators are learning five activities to engage with students. They will have pre-written codes and have learned to modify and edit the code rather than spending time writing their own codes. 

The class will be looking at a variety of livestock and plant systems, from grain bin moisture sensors to greenhouse climate control and yard sprinkler timers. The educators loaded up on knowledge and then went home with electronic components, controllers, and sensors to engage with their students.&nbsp;

While the class is focused on agriculture automation, White said it’s open to any agriculture or science teacher willing to take the knowledge back to the class and teach it.&nbsp;

“I took the class because this is my first year of teaching,” said Kyle Brozek, industrial technology instructor at Norris High School in Firth, Neb. “I have an automation class and an electricity and electronics class. I thought the class would be very beneficial to what I would be doing.” Brozek and others received the Arduino Sketch IDE library, where they can use keywords to find and write code for their microcontroller boards.

The educators will be using plywood barns, which students will be able to put together and use to place fans, temperature sensors, and LCD displays. They can also add a grain bin and wind turbine as part of the school project designs. White’s lab at the Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center has a lending library with 3D printers if a school doesn’t have one, and laser engravers will be available at the lab so materials and files can be sent in by teachers to create what they need. White had originally thought the engravers could also be sent to school, but they are too delicate and need to stay in one place.&nbsp;

“We started with 11 teachers this year and hope to grow to 25 each year the next two years, and hopefully have 60 teachers across Nebraska and South Dakota teaching kids how to automate systems, do motor controls, and set kids up for success even without a four-year degree,” White said. With agriculture becoming more and more automated, the importance of students learning the systems and even growing their businesses is something both the educators and White would like to see.&nbsp;

“We live in a continually improving automated world,” Brozek said. “More and more industries are moving towards automation. If our students learn and understand it now, that could give them a step up when they get out of school and into the workforce.”&nbsp;

Street closure in City of Scottsbluff 

Chadron, NE — This Thanksgiving holiday, the Chadron Police Department is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on a high-visibility Click It or Ticket seat belt awareness campaign. From November 20 to November 27, the law enforcement community will be working together to reduce the number of fatalities that occur when vehicle passengers fail to buckle up. If they spot you, they will pull you over and issue a ticket.

During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 2021 (6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24, to 5:59 a.m. on Monday, November 29), there were 361 passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes across the nation. Half (50%) were unrestrained. Not wearing a seat belt proved to be deadly at any time of the day during the holiday weekend: 52% of those killed in nighttime crashes were unbuckled, and 46% of those killed in daytime crashes also were unbuckled. These deaths represent needless tragedies for families across America and may have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt.

“Buckle your seat belt to stay safe and to stay legal,” said Sgt. Chelsey Stolley. “Whether you’re driving cross-country or across the street, whether it is day or night, it is essential that you wear a seat belt. The bottom line is this: That seat belt may very well mean the difference between life and death. This Thanksgiving, and every day of the year, remember: Click It or Ticket.”

In Chadron, the law requires “The driver, each front-seat occupant in the vehicle and all children six years of age and less than 18 years of age must wear occupant protection systems and all occupant protection systems worn are properly adjusted and fastened. All persons being transported by a motor vehicle operated by a holder of a provisional operator's permit or a school permit shall use occupant protection systems worn are properly adjusted and fastened. This is a secondary law, which means the driver is cited for this violation only if cited or charged with an additional violation or some other offense. The violation shall be assessed against the driver of vehicle result in a $25.00 fine.”

Half (50%) were unrestrained. Not wearing a seat belt proved to be deadly at any time of the day during the holiday weekend: 52% of those killed in nighttime crashes were unbuckled, and 46% of those killed in daytime crashes also were unbuckled. These deaths represent needless tragedies for families across America and may have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt.“Buckle your seat belt to stay safe and to stay legal,” said Sgt. Chelsey Stolley. “Whether you’re driving cross-country or across the street, whether it is day or night, it is essential that you wear a seat belt. The bottom line is this: That seat belt may very well mean the difference between life and death. This Thanksgiving, and every day of the year, remember: Click It or Ticket.”In Chadron, the law requires “The driver, each front-seat occupant in the vehicle and all children six years of age and less than 18 years of age must wear occupant protection systems and all occupant protection systems worn are properly adjusted and fastened. All persons being transported by a motor vehicle operated by a holder of a provisional operator's permit or a school permit shall use occupant protection systems worn are properly adjusted and fastened. This is a secondary law, which means the driver is cited for this violation only if cited or charged with an additional violation or some other offense. Chadron police teaming up with NHTSA for 'Click It or Ticket'

Kennedy once said: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” Our veterans deserve not just our gratitude, but also our commitment. As a nation, we commit to give them the quality benefits and care they’ve earned. In Nebraska, we proved that is just the start. When I was Governor, we also committed to reducing the burdens our veterans face to maximize their benefits. It’s time Washington makes that same commitment.

That’s why this week I’ve introduced the Tax Cuts for Veterans Act in the U.S. Senate. My bill would make military retirement pay tax-free at the federal level. It is the fourth piece of legislation in my “Proven Nebraska Solutions Ready for America” package.

In 2021, at my request, Colonel Tom Brewer introduced LB387, which eliminated state income tax on military retirement benefits. LB387 was a big win for our state, for Nebraska’s job creators, and for military families looking to put down roots in Nebraska. It was not a Republican priority or a Democrat priority. It was a Nebraska priority. Not one state senator voted against it. It was a strong, bipartisan endorsement of a common-sense idea.

This policy has worked for veterans across Nebraska. Lawmakers in Washington should come together and do the same for veterans across the country. Doing so would give real relief to veterans and their families in this time of stubbornly high inflation. Consider an enlisted soldier, sailor, guardsman, or airman who serves for 20 years. My bill would result in tax relief of over $6,000 per year. That comes out to an extra $500 more per month. That’s extra money for necessities like groceries and gas, or even savings for the future or a rainy day.

In Nebraska, we proved it’s possible. It’s time to eliminate federal taxes on military retirement for veterans across the country. By passing my Tax Cuts for Veterans Act, we can take a significant step to better the lives of veterans and their families. I will never stop fighting to make sure our veterans get the support they’ve earned.

This Veterans Day, let us rededicate ourselves to showing our gratitude and respect to the 106,000 veterans living in Nebraska. Their courageous service should inspire us to help our community and country however we can. Sen. Ricketts: Fighting for Our Veterans

&nbsp;Erica Lauder of Box Butte General Hospital was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundatio's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The nomination submitted read, “Excruciating, unbearable pain I felt after a recent shoulder surgery. I just couldn’t stand it. A nurse began massaging my shoulder to work out the fluid trapped in my shoulder. I knew she had to have other things to do but she sat there and rubbed my shoulder until the pain was gone. It was Erica. My hero. I’m nothing special so I know she would have done the same for any patient. I will never forget what she did for me. I feel all the nursing staff at BBGH are the best in the world but what she did for me that day still brings me to tears years later. The care and compassion that all nurses should strive to provide. I’ve thanked her and told her she is my hero, but I’m not sure she’ll ever know much that meant to me and still does. Thanks again Erica. I know there is a special place in heaven for you.”

Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. Ogallala American Legion Post #135 serving a free dinner to any Veteran w/ID card on Friday

There was an accident in Scottsbluff on Thursday afternoon where a vehicle went through the front window of a building.

The Scottsbluff Police Department issued a press release stating that they responded to the 1500 block of Broadway at 11:55 a.m. where they found a 2016 blue Ford Edge that went through the front window of 1507 Broadway.&nbsp; 78-year-old Patricia King of Mitchell was identified as the driver of the vehicle.

Police determined that the Ford Edge King was driving was pulling into a parking stall when the vehicle went over the curb and struck the building.

No one was in the building at the time, it appears that it took no structural damage.

King was transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance. The Scottsbluff Police Department was assisted by the Scottsbluff Fire Department and Valley Ambulance.

The car violated a red light at the intersection and struck the passenger side of the SUV. This caused the SUV to roll ¾ and ended up on its side.
