Alliance, NE- The Box Butte Health Foundation (BBHF) raised $32,903 during its annual Golf Classic, which took place on Saturday, July 29.

The money raised by the golf tournament will be used to purchase a Verathon Prime Plus Scanner and Stand, a Hearing Booth, a Spirit CRS 800 Recumbent Stepper, and an ID NOW Machine for Box Butte General Hospital.

The Verathon Prime Plus Scanner will be used in the Emergency Department as well as the Patient Care Unit to help providers and staff in diagnosing and treating a patient’s urological complaints. Currently, the ED and PCU share a scanner, which can sometimes lead to one department having to wait for the scanner while it is being used. Having a second scanner will allow both departments to treat patients faster.

Greater Nebraska Medical and Surgical Services (GNMSS) will be receiving the Hearing Booth, which will be replacing the machine currently being used. The clinic will use the hearing booth for hearing tests done for BNSF and other individuals who need tested.

The Spirit CRS 800 Recumbent Stepper will go to Rehab to be used for working with patients post-surgery as well as those that have general weakness or decreased activity tolerance. The stepper is designed to be used for patients as a warm up and to improve overall strength and mobility. Finally, the ID NOW machine will be used in the lab to analyze tests for Flu A/B, Rapid Strep, COVID-19, and RSV.

“The Foundation is grateful to all of the volunteers, golfers and the many businesses who make the tournament a successful event!” Chelsea Thompson, Foundation Director, said. “Although we come together to raise funds, it’s not just about the money. We want people to look forward to a fun event that has a little bit of a different flair, and I think it shows when we have so many of our sponsors and golfers return year-after-year. The Foundation wouldn’t be able to give back to the great people in Box Butte County and beyond without the support of everyone involved.”

BBHF raises $32K with annual Golf Classic

CHADRON – Chadron State College President Ron K. Patterson will begin a listening tour, Building Our Future Together, this fall in various communities in CSC’s service region. The listening tour kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the Bean Broker in Chadron from 4 to 6 p.m. Future dates and locations are listed below. All sessions are open to the public.&nbsp;

Patterson, who began at CSC in July, wants to use his first months in office to engage with students, employees, alumni, community members, and friends as he can to learn more about what the college is doing well and where areas for improvement may be located.

“We live in a period of possibility. I truly believe Chadron State College stands at the threshold of an exciting new era of its second century of providing a first-class, first-choice student experience focused on students, teaching, scholarship, and service,” Patterson said.

In addition to the public events, Patterson will conduct listening sessions with students, employees, and alumni. Dates and locations will be communicated once they are scheduled.

In August, Patterson met with educational partners in Alliance, Scottsbluff, Gering, Ogallala, and North Platte. He said the discussions were insightful and encouraging and he plans to return to those communities this fall. Patterson will meet with additional educational partners throughout CSC’s region during the fall semester.

Patterson will use the information he obtains from the listening sessions to help determine priorities for the college’s strategic plan.

President Patterson to begin listening tour Sept. 6 in Chadron

Alliance was well represented at the United Way of Western Nebraska Kickoff event on Wednesday in Scottsbluff, where United Way of Nebraska announced that their goal is to raise $400,000 this year. Executive Director Karen Benzel explains what else was done at the event.

"We announced our Pacesetter Business of the Year award, our Partner Agency of the Year award, and we also honored our last campaign co-chair as well as announce brand new campaign co-chairs," Benzel said.

Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance earned the Pacesetter of the Year award, and&nbsp;Box Butte Health Foundation Director Chelsea Thompson&nbsp; &nbsp;accepted the award.&nbsp; Benzel explains why BBGH was deserving of the honor.

"They increased they're internal campaign by 70% which is huge, and a 30% participation rate," Benzel said. While the financial aspect is a part of the award, Benzel says BBGH is also a strong supporter of programs like Imaginary Library, community impact works and more.

Benzel also talked about the Duck Draw and that time is running out to get your ducks.&nbsp; &nbsp;The drawing is to be held Sept. 16 and someone will win a 2023 Chevrolet Trax, donated by TEAM Auto Center. Ducks are available at ALLO in Alliance, The United Way office in Alliance, Apricot Lane in Chadron, and also available online at https://www.uwwn.org/duck.

Today is Tammy Mowry's last day as Sherrif of Box Butte County as she is retiring after 43 years in Law Enforcement. 

Mowry talked to Panhandle Post when she first announced her retirement at the beginning of August, and she wants to thank the community for their support. "Box Butte County has been really good to me, I'm grateful," Mowry said.&nbsp;

Mowry was the first woman's Sheriff when she was elected back in 2007. Earlier this week, Panhandle Post reported that J.D Sutphen was named the interim Sheriff as Box Butte County continues to accept applications for Sheriff. Deadlines to submit applications are Sept. 27.

Lukens has held the position since Dec. 2020, and his resignation is effective beginning Sept. 15, 2023.

Lieutenant Kirk Felker has been appointed Interim Police Chief while the city completes their search for a new Chief.

Alliance City Manager Seth Sorensen issued a statement on Luken's resignation stating: "On behalf of the City of Alliance, we wish Chief Lukens the very best in his future endeavors."

As of this release, no reason for Lukens's resignation has been made known to the public and he has not issued a statement on his resignation at this time.

Recognized student organization presidents have access to sign-up members of their respective organizations for fundraising opportunities, according to Karl Kigerl, Food Service Director.

Group members can volunteer for any number of concessions shifts at&nbsp;CSC&nbsp;athletic events on a first-come, first-serve basis. Shifts will open two weeks prior to each event.

Aladdin will donate $12 per hour worked for each volunteer from a student group. Tips will go to the student groups.

CSC food service offers fund-raising opportunities to student clubs

Earlier this summer a friend talked to me about the difficulty she was having finding a dentist who would see her and her children. The family is on Medicaid, and very few dentists in our area will see Medicaid patients. She'll verify that—she's called them all.

My friend contacted CAPWN, the Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska, for assistance. She was required to fill out a gigantic packet of paperwork to prove eligibility, even though she has Medicaid coverage. When she submitted the packet, she learned she would need a separate packet for each member of her family, five packets in total. After those were turned in, she learned they would not serve new adults seeking assistance, only children.

CAPWN referred her to an office that provides emergency dental services for adults once a week beginning at 7:30 am. The line begins forming at 4:00 am. She arrived and joined the line at 4:30. After the office didn't open, someone realized there was a sign on the door that said they were closed that week. She hasn't been back.

She finally found a pediatric dentist in Scottsbluff who would see her children. However, she will have to go to Lincoln to get her cavities filled. Medicaid will help cover her gas expenses, but not her overnight room.

This month Flatwater Free Press ran a story about dental care for people on Medicaid. Destiny Herbers' story—Disappearing dentists: For low-income Nebraskans, long drives, long lines, little help—was reprinted in several of the state's newspapers. The full article can be found online at flatwaterfreepress.org. It includes several heartbreaking stories about people struggling to get dental care in our state. Many end up in emergency rooms when dental infections threaten their health.

Each year, fewer dentists treat Nebraska’s Medicaid patients. In the past five years, the number of dental providers treating Medicaid-eligible patients has decreased by 37%. Dentists say they are no longer accepting Medicaid-eligible patients because the state’s Medicaid reimbursement only covers about 39% of their bill, and their costs have risen tremendously in the last few years.

The problem is severe in western Nebraska. Only two dozen dentists west of Kearney have been paid for treating a Medicaid patient so far in 2023. Forty-three Nebraska counties have zero dentists helping low-income Nebraskans. In the Panhandle, there is one dentist in Chadron and a few in Scottsbluff who see Medicaid patients.

Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services handles reimbursement for Medicaid, following budget allocations from the Nebraska Legislature. This year their allocation was increased by 3%, but the same increase for next year was vetoed by Governor Pillen.

Sen. Lynne Walz of Fremont introduced a bill last January that would increase dental services reimbursement under the Medical Assistance Act by 25%. The increase would cost roughly $6 million. It would help cover the billing shortfall but still be less than most insurance coverages or private pay amounts dentists receive. The Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee unanimously voted for LB 358, sending it to the full Legislature, but it has not yet been debated on the floor. The bill is on general file and will be brought up for debate during the 2024 session.

Currently the state caps an adult's Medicaid dental coverage at $750 per year. New Medicaid plans with dental coverage will be available next year. In January, the $750 benefits cap will be removed, and there will be other changes to the structure of Medicaid’s dental coverage. Nebraska Medicaid is also changing reimbursements for dentures and wisdom teeth extraction to pay dentists for each step of treatment. Open enrollment for these plans begins in November, allowing patients to choose between three managed care organizations.

Meanwhile, people's dental issues go untreated until they end up in hospital emergency rooms, costing the state so much more!

The family is on Medicaid, and very few dentists in our area will see Medicaid patients. She'll verify that—she's called them all.My friend contacted CAPWN, the Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska, for assistance. She was required to fill out a gigantic packet of paperwork to prove eligibility, even though she has Medicaid coverage. When she submitted the packet, she learned she would need a separate packet for each member of her family, five packets in total. After those were turned in, she learned they would not serve new adults seeking assistance, only children.CAPWN referred her to an office that provides emergency dental services for adults once a week beginning at 7:30 am. The line begins forming at 4:00 am. She arrived and joined the line at 4:30. After the office didn't open, someone realized there was a sign on the door that said they were closed that week. She hasn't been back.She finally found a pediatric dentist in Scottsbluff who would see her children. However, she will have to go to Lincoln to get her cavities filled. Medicaid will help cover her gas expenses, but not her overnight room.This month Flatwater Free Press ran a story about dental care for people on Medicaid. Getting Ahead: Medicaid and Dental Coverage 

Voting is up now  for the top 16 contenders in the second annual "Coolest Thing Made in Nebraska Contest" and an Alliance business made the list Greenhouse in the Snow-Antioch Machine Shop in Alliance is representing the Panhandle with their Geothermal Greenhouse. 

Allen Bright operates Greenhouse in the Snow with Owner and Creator Russ Finch and says it is an honor to be on the list. "We're thrilled to be recognized as one of the coolest things made in Nebraska, of course we've always thought so," Bright said. "There is lot's of competition so we're excited to be there."

Bright also explains that Greenhouse in Snow builds&nbsp; geothermal greenhouses that get heat from the earth. That is a huge advantage in winters to allow people to continue to grow plants during those months.

Bright gives a lot of credit to his partner Russ Finch and says that Finch made the original greenhouse about 35 years ago. Greenhouse in the Snow sells the geothermal greenhouses and Bright says there are approximately 700 of them nationwide.

State Senator Lou Ann Linehan issued a statement on Wednesday about education and legislation, and the importance of scholarships for families in need in Nebraska.

Linehan issued a statement that indicates that&nbsp; Support our Schools reportedly submitted approximately 117,000 signatures to the Secretary of State on Wednesday, which should put legislation LB753 on the November 2024 ballot. She says that there were not enough signatures to suspend the program, allowing families in need to receive&nbsp; scholarships for 2024-2025.

Linehan continues to say that she stands with Governor Jim Pillen and a bipartisan super-majority of the Legislature to support parents and children desperately in need of education choice.

 "All Nebraska kids deserve hope and opportunity from a quality education of their parents choosing," Linehan said.  "The teachers union and their allies want to double down on their efforts to take opportunity away from vulnerable kids, including kids from low income families and kids trying to escape bullying, that’s a fight I’m willing to take on."

The Scotts Bluff National Monument recently opened a brand new exhibit that celebrates the 107th anniversary of the National Parks Service.

The exhibit is of works of William Henry Jackson that includes his paintings and photographs that have not been displayed before at the Monument. The exhibit is at the theater of the Visitor Center.

Jackson lived from April 4, 1843, to June 30, 1942 and is famous for traveling through the American West, and playing a role in the creation&nbsp; of Yellowstone National Park.

Box Butte County Sheriff Tammy Mowry's last official day is coming up on Thursday, August 31st. 

Mowry announced her retirement to Panhandle Post at the beginning of August after serving in the position since 2007.

With&nbsp; Dobby's Frontier Town Fall Festival coming up, the non profit organization is asking the public for assistance in increasing and improving their security. Lori White is the President of the Dobby's Towners Board and she explains. "What we're doing at this point looking to enhance the security system, we're still looking at bidders." White said.&nbsp;

White says that they are looking for something that is strong enough to record license plates when vehicles enter through the gates. Increasing security at Dobby's is expensive due to the size the facility at 2.5 acres and 27 buildings and as a non-profit, the organization relies heavily on donations. Dobby's gets a once-a-year donation from the Mission Store up to $2,000 for smaller items. 

White says they are working to get a GoFundMe account running for the security upgrades they need. She also says they are also in need of volunteers.

"We're a skeleton&nbsp; crew right now, there's 2-3 of us that are maintaining the facility all summer long," White said. "During the Fall Festival, we have approximately 15 that take care of the Fall Festival, so we have got to get people involved."

Dobby's Frontier Town aims to improve security with public's help

A Rushville man was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon after allegedly assaulting a man with a knife in Chadron. Chadron police responded to a call of reports of a fight at the Royal Court Apartments located on the 300 block of Pinecrest Drive.

Upon arrival, Police Chief Rick Hickstein observed a man walking south on Cedar Buttes matching the description of the man the caller described and he was stopped and detained.

The man had blood on his clothing and hands while also having cuts on his hands as well.

A preliminary investigation was done at apartment complex and met with two other people involved in the fight and a witness.  Witnesses say  a fight started between Arnold and another male and during the fight, Arnold pulled a knife out. As a result of the fight, Aaron Arnold received cuts to his hands, but nobody was stabbed with the knife.

As a result of the investigation, 35-year-old Aaron Arnold was placed under arrest for Criminal Attempt Assault-Second Degree, A Class IIIA Felony and Terroristic Threats, A Class IV Felony.

The Chadron Police Department received assistance with this case by the Nebraska State Patrol and the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department.

Dave and Cindy Sautter have been married for 17 years. Cindy has lived here all her life, except a decade away in the middle, while Dave came here in 1985. He taught and coached during 28 years at Alliance High School then spent another four years on the basketball court after retiring from the classroom.

Q: How long have you been on curbside, and why did you sign up?

Cindy: It has been quite awhile, when it started – seven years. (Our daughter) Jenny’s the one who talked me into it. She was living in New York and said, “Make a better world for Molly,” our granddaughter.

Cindy: We fill a trash bag full plus cardboard boxes.

Q: How has this service influenced your opinion of recycling?

Dave: The service allowed us to get started (from home) I guess. We did recycle before at the Alliance Plaza 12-13 years ago. We had three trash cans to keep plastic and paper separate. Cindy: This is so much nicer. Somebody picks it up and sorts it for us.

Q: Newest thing you’ve added to the bag?

Dave: At some point you started accepting glass. We put in paper bags and use the other (plastic) ones, take them to the grocery store to be recycled.

Q: Why do you feel it is important to recycle?

Dave: I think it’s important to reuse things if we can, especially the plastic. Cardboard goes back, I don’t know what all they make out of it. Napkins we get at the fast food restaurants are recycled materials. That’s probably a good thing.

Q: Other “green” practices at your home?

Dave and Cindy use a sprinkler system to reduce water use. They replaced windows 10 years ago as well as doors which improved energy efficiency. More recently, another layer of insulation covered the home’s exterior before putting on new siding.

Dave plans to “Just keep doing what we’re doing I guess.”

Alliance Public Schools has a Backpack Program that has been around for 14 years, that delivers food to students in need. Cheryl Harris is the Backpack Program Coordinator and explains how the process starts.

An Alliance resident has filed a Recall Petition against Box Butte County Public Defender Enet Somers-Dehaney.

 Brent Hansen of Alliance filed the petition on Wednesday August 23 with the Box Butte County Clerk. Hansen will serve as the Principal Circulator.    

 Hansen said this statement in the recall filing “Somers-Dehaney has shown her incompetence as an attorney numerous times throughout her time in office.  This incompetence has caused her to lose most of her caseload.  This has resulted in Box Butte County having to hire outside counsel.   Paying both Somers-Dehaney and outside counsel has caused a depletion of county funds.”

Box Butte County Clerk of the District Court Kevin Horn tells Panhandle Post  that during 2023, the District Court has paid court-appointed counsel over twenty-thousand dollars in attorney fees.

Horn says additional court appointed counsel fees have been paid by the County Court, but he did not have access to the lower court records. 

In a letter to Somers-Dehaney, County Clerk Martie Burke states that the petition circulators must obtain at least 35 percent of the total vote cast for Somers-Dehaney in the November, 2022 general election.

In December, 2021, the Box Butte County Commissioners, approved a contract with Somers-Dehaney to fill the position that had been mostly vacant since the January, 2020 departure of Jon Worthman of Gering, who was eventually convicted of felony drug crimes. 

A trial is scheduled to take place in Box Butte County District Court on September 7 concerning five accusations of Somers-Dehaney being held in contempt of court.

Brent Hansen of Alliance filed the petition on Wednesday August 23 with the Box Butte County Clerk. Hansen will serve as the Principal Circulator.
