LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen proclaimed&nbsp;the month of October as&nbsp;Developmental Disabilities Employment Awareness Month&nbsp;and highlighted the contributions of capable and eager individuals who are ready to join the workforce and help the state’s economy grow.

“Creating a welcoming and supportive workplace is not only beneficial for individuals with disabilities, it’s also a benefit to Nebraska businesses,” said Governor Pillen. “Although our state continues to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation, individuals with disabilities are an underutilized resource who can help fill workplace gaps in our communities.”

One of the businesses highlighted for hiring such workers was the Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel. The hotel’s program, Project Search, works with individuals who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to develop transferable skills that can be used in the community. Workers fill a variety of roles at the Cornhusker – dishwashers, prep cooks, banquet and valet assistants, plus more.

“The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel is proud of the contributions our associates with disabilities make to our&nbsp; hotel and the positive impact they have to our culture,” said Human Resources Director Codie Meehan. “We are happy to be an inclusive workplace in the Lincoln community and hope to inspire other businesses to employ our Project Search graduates and others with disabilities.”

By hiring individuals with disabilities, a business can expand its talent pool and strengthen its workforce. According to a national survey by National Core Indicators, 54% of individuals with IDD in Nebraska do not have a community job, but would like one.

“All Nebraskans deserve to live, love, work, play, and pursue their life aspirations,” said Tony Green, director of the division of developmental disabilities at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). “Many individuals with disabilities are willing, ready, and excited to work. One of the resources available for employers who are interested in hiring individuals with IDD is Nebraska Vocational Rehabilitation (VR). The organization works with businesses to find and retain talent, and also works with individuals to make sure their new at-work match is a positive one. &nbsp;That includes identifying on and off-site job supports and tools that can help make the worker more successful in their new role.

Gov. Pillen Encourages Businesses to Hire Individuals with Disabilities

On the Thursday the Hemingford Bobcats were back in the playoffs after missing the postseason the last two years, but the Bobcats ran into a tough team 7-1 Arapahoe team, and they ultimately fell 52-22 in the road game.

Hemingford had their best offensive quarter in the 1st as the Bobcats scored 14 points as they tried to keep up with the Warriors offense. Arapahoe scored 38 first quarter points led by their star running back William Cacy who had three rushing touchdowns against Bobcats and a game high 106 yards.&nbsp;

The loss for Hemingford ended a three-game winning streak, but it also ended their season at 5-4, their best record since 2020.

The Bulldogs put up over 300 yards of offense on one of the best teams in Class C-1 in Sidney, but the Red Raiders scored touchdowns on all six offensive drives in the first half as the 49-14 lead at halftime before winning 56-20.

Alliance fell behind 20-0 before the Bulldogs responded with a 70-yard touchdown pass from Landen Crowe Tristen Timbers to get within two touchdowns at 20-8. Sidney added two more rushing touchdowns before Alliance had a great drive using their up-tempo offense as Crowe found Seth Meyring for a 10- yard score to cut the Sidney lead to 35-14. Lance Holly returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to push the Red Raiders lead to 42-14 and they added one more TD on the ground from QB Isak Doty to end the half.

Jonah Amill caught a TD from Crowe to end the scoring to eclipse 20 points for the 6th time this season, something they did only once in 2022.

Landen Crowe became the first quarterback in school history to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season with 2,331, and also the career passing record with 3,564. Tristen Timbers broke the single season receiving record at Alliance with 838.&nbsp;

The Bulldogs at 2-7 also won two games for the first time since 2019 and will look to build off of their success this season.

HS Football: Hemingford and Alliance end seasons after vast improvement

Attendees will learn strategies designed to reduce risk exposure to achieve a profitable outcome in uncertain times.

Current issues facing the cattle industry will be discussed to help producers to make more informed decisions facing the industry.

Topics will include managing drought risk with USDA’s Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage (PRF) Insurance and managing price risk with USDA’s Livestock Risk Protection (LRP). PRF is an annual sign-up due on Dec. 1. LRP can be purchased most business days. Participants will be guided through a case study to understand strategies and personal preferences for their use of these types of subsidized insurance products discussed during the workshop.

Free Price Management Workshop for Nebraska Cattle Producers

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Title IX Coordinator Morgan Cullan presented at the Association of Title IX Administrators (ATIXA) in Philadelphia Oct. 8-13. The title was Navigation of the Title IX Coordinator Role &amp; Best Practices: A System-Level and Small Institution Panel.

The opportunity came her way when she was approached by Tom Green, Director of Title IX Compliance for Nebraska State College System. He asked if Cullan would like to work with him to submit a proposal to ATIXA to present at the national conference. The proposal was approved and conference organizers asked if they would join with Dr. Laura Soulsby of Randolph-Macon College, a small private institution near Richmond, Virginia, who had written a similar submission.

“The three of us, through numerous emails and Zoom meetings, worked together to create a cohesive and comprehensive presentation talking about the challenges faced at a system office, public institution, and private institution,” Cullan said.

Cullan said she saw a need for the presentation since smaller institutions were not well represented at past conferences.

“Typically, the topics are directed toward larger universities who have greater budgets and often have teams of individuals who work in a Title IX Department. We felt there was a need for smaller institutions to have a platform and to address issues we face. What our role looks like, and the multiple hats we wear. Have a space where we could share ideas, resources, and things we have learned,” Cullan said.

She said she appreciates Green utilizing technology to provide the same level of support for her at CSC, as he does for her counterparts in Peru and Wayne.

During the presentation, Cullan and her colleagues discussed&nbsp;Title IX Compliance, coordination of investigations, file maintenance, educational training, educational programming, campus surveys, and 24-hour on-call responses. Cullan talked about managing the&nbsp;challenges of CSC’s rural location, distance from the other state colleges, and system office. She also discussed managing relationships and building trust with departments on campus, as well as off-campus agencies.

Other topics Cullan discussed during her presentation included limited off-campus resources, ensuring a high level of case management and care, accessing funding for educational programming, and ensuring privacy.

The panel members also covered self-care for Title IX professionals including how to develop a network and access online resources.

“I am so fortunate to have a system-level coordinator and sister college coordinators to bounce ideas off of,” she said. “My takeaways were the similarly shared challenges, the need for additional support, and the need for additional funding,” Cullan said.

Cullan said the conference used an app that allowed presenters and conference attendees to share useful information.

“So even after our session, everyone in attendance was able to review and learn about what resources are available. We had several people stay behind and share additional resources and tips including different grant opportunities,” she said.

The Hemingford Girls Cross Country Team will bring home another State Championship!&nbsp; &nbsp;The Bobcats defended their Class D&nbsp; Girls Title on Friday in Kearney.&nbsp; &nbsp;Hemingford finished 1st,&nbsp; with 33 team points, ahead of Ainsworth, the runner up with 36 points.&nbsp; Crofton was 3rd with 39 points.

Leading the way for the Lady Bobcats was Sophomore Dakota Horstman who finished 6th.&nbsp; Junior Aurora Hinman was 10th and Senior Carlye Kresl was 17th.&nbsp; Teagen Thompson and Serenity Dillard also competed.

Hemingford was also the Class D Girls Champion in 2022 .&nbsp;

The Hemingford Boys Team also competed in the State Meet.&nbsp; The Bobcats were 16th in the team standings with 145 points.&nbsp; Boys runners were...Freshman Austin Benda (31st0. Junior Boady Hunter (32nd) . Sophomore Keirith Yale (82nd) and Sophomore Cody Penaluna (83rd) Jayme Clark is the Head Coach.

North Platte Saint Patrick's won the team title with 18 points. Freeman was the runner up with 36 points.

The Alliance Boys Team competed in the Class C State Meet and finished 8th in the team standings with 137 points. Sophomore Trevor Zurn lead the way finishing 10th.&nbsp; Freshman Devin Graham was 37th.&nbsp; Senior Ben Cassatt - Reina was 44th.&nbsp; Freshman Asher Saka was 46th.&nbsp; Senior Mario Rodriquez and Sophomore Evan Merrihew also competed for the Bulldogs.&nbsp; Alliance is Coached by Kelly Erickson.

Gothenburg was the Class C Boys Champion with 38 points. Lincoln Christian was the runner up with 45 points.&nbsp;

Hemingford Repeats as Girls State Cross Country Champion. Bobcat Boys 16th. Alliance Boys 8th

HOT SPRINGS, S.D. –&nbsp;A bison capture began on October 16 and continue through October 27 at Wind Cave National Park.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

For safety reasons, this operation will be closed to the public. The park plans to reduce the current population of approximately 500 bison to 400 by removing yearlings and two-year olds. A helicopter will be used to herd bison into a holding area October 18- 20. The last bison capture in the park was in 2021. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bison removed from the park will be offered to Tribal Nations through the InterTribal Buffalo Council (ITBC). The ITBC is a federally recognized Tribal organization that delivers live bison to member Tribes, supports establishment of Tribal bison herds, and supports the historical, cultural, traditional, and spiritual relationship of Tribes and bison. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bison bulls can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand six feet or more at the shoulder. Bison cows are smaller, weighing up to 1,100 pounds and stand four to five feet at the shoulder. Both bulls and cows have horns. Bison are herbivores or plant eaters, and feed primarily on grasses. They are often seen in or near prairie dog towns where they find new grass shoots. Because bison are constrained to park lands by a perimeter fence, periodic captures are necessary to maintain appropriate numbers relevant to available resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bison cows are smaller, weighing up to 1,100 pounds and stand four to five feet at the shoulder. Both bulls and cows have horns. Bison are herbivores or plant eaters, and feed primarily on grasses. They are often seen in or near prairie dog towns where they find new grass shoots. CHADRON – Chadron State College Social Work seniors are hosting a conference, Helping Overcome Poverty and Eliminations (HOPE), Nov. 8 in the Student Center. The conference is free to the public and starts at 8 a.m. Conference attendees will be on their own for lunch.&nbsp;<a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeT_uSSMUwplqDC_8xxlY3m2I_SMEzVW2UfLYn76z7Ft2mQg/viewform" target="_blank">Registration</a>&nbsp;is required for participation in the afternoon poverty simulator.

Dr. Anitra Warrior an American Indian Child Psychologist and owner of Morningstar Counseling in Lincoln will be the first speaker at 8:20 a.m.

According to her website, Warrior has provided clinical services to children and families throughout Nebraska for the past 15 years. Morningstar Counseling has seven locations and partners with multiple school districts, colleges, tribes, and organizations to support the healthy development and mental well-being of Nebraska children and families.

A panel discussion will follow at 9:30 a.m. The three panelists will discuss local agencies and services that support individuals in poverty. Panel members are Jennifer Schaer, Director of Projective Strive/TRIO at CSC, Rachel Johnson, Director of Volunteer Services and RSVP at Northwest Community Action Partnership, and Derek Bauer, Chadron Public School District School Resource Officer.

Social Work alumnus&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/2017/november-student-of-the-month-grateful-for-project-strive.html" target="_blank">Jeff Mugongo</a>&nbsp;will speak at 11 a.m. Mugongo, who lives in Arizona, is the founder of JTS Fitness, a program designed to assist children and youth in developing athletic techniques and training necessary to excel in sports.

Mugongo, who came to the U.S. in 2010, shared&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/2018/two-students-one-faculty-member-publish-poetry-during-social-work-month.html" target="_blank">his story</a>&nbsp;of growing up in Rwanda, Africa, in poetry published in The New Social Worker in March 2018.

He is excited to speak at the conference.

“I am truly honored to have the chance to pursue my passion and become a motivational speaker and share my story at the conference,” he said.

The interactive simulator will begin at 1:30 p.m. According to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.povertysimulation.net/about/" target="_blank">poverty simulation website</a>, the event will take place in a large room with groups of participants called families seated in the middle. Tables with volunteer staff representing community resources and services will be arranged around the perimeter of the room.

During the two-hour simulator participants will assume the identity of families facing poverty and role-play a month timeframe trying to maintain their basic needs.

The final, debriefing portion of the experience will involve participants discussing what they learned. Conference organizers will also challenge participants to share the experience with family, friends, and contacts in the community.

Attendees will learn strategies designed to reduce risk exposure to achieve a profitable outcome in uncertain times.
