CHADRON – 11 young ladies from across Nebraska will be competing in the 2024 Miss Chadron pageant in Chadron on Saturday October 14th at 6 pm at the Chadron High School Auditorium in Chadron, Nebraska. Titles awarded that evening will include Miss Chadron, Miss Northwest, Miss Chadron’s Teen and Miss Northwest’s Teen.

The six contestants vying for the Teen titles are: Madisen Meek, the daughter of Jennifer and Brett Cullan and David Meek of Hemingford; Anna Meir, daughter of Julie and Justin Focken and the late Richie Meier of Gering; Grace Tanner, daughter of….. of North Platte; Addi Carter, daughter of Monica and Eric Carter of North Platte; Addison Dauel, daughter of Brenda and Aaron Dauel Gretna; Rylee Wackler, daughter of Eric and Danielle Wackler of Valentine.

The five Miss Contestants vying for the Miss titles are: Adaline Linscott, daughter of Tim and Deb Linscott of Fairbury; Rylie Wright daughter of Bridget and Justin Rabe and Mick Wright; of Hemingford; Hannah Henton, daughter of Kris and Tom O’Brien and Jason Henton of Kimball; Desteny Miller, daughter of Brandon and Cherry Wulf of Arapahoe; and Lexi Nolda, daughter of Luis and Gianna Nolda of North Platte.

Co-Emcees of the evening will be Morgan Baird, Miss Nebraska 2023 and Boston Paterra, Miss Nebraska’s Teen 2023 who was Miss Alliance’s Teen 2023.

The audience will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite contestant by voting for the audience choice award! There will also be a silent auction that will take place during the pageant.

The Miss and Teen pageants are under the Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska’s Teen Competition, which is held under the Miss American Organization. It is designed to promote scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement for America’s young women.

We are asking our residents to assist in these efforts by removing the below listed vehicle types from City streets by November 1st through March 31.

Chadron Police reminds public about city ordinance Recreational vehicles; storage

September 28-29, yep “KNB Conference” written across the corresponding lines of my Peanuts planner. I had only glanced at an initial itinerary then waited until the Wednesday I left to study a more detailed, updated version. One reason for procrastinating came from a focus on one day at a time with our current personnel transition at the recycling center. Also, I have yet to be disappointed in the effort Keep Nebraska Beautiful puts forth and thought it might be constructive to let the agenda roll around in my head during the four-hour drive to Kearney.

Any conference packs a certain level of deja vu, it was the same when I attended our annual Nebraska Press Association gatherings. Keep Nebraska Beautiful opened with a Keep America Beautiful update, and returned to the useful topic of how to work with your board. Affiliates, in addition to the free flow of ideas through reconnecting and networking, had an hour for “best practices/idea sharing”. As always a highlight came Thursday evening during the KNB Environmental Awards Dinner. I sat with an incredible group of people from Seward who made multiple trips to gather hardware in recognition of their efforts.

A fair number of the awards went to schools and youth groups. Pete Stadig, KNB program director and emcee for the evening, read highlights of their accomplishments with greater detail afforded winners of each category. The ceremony left me wanting to know more. I settled for hearing again about a school featured when KNB hosted its 2021 conference in Lincoln’s Haymarket.

An enormous beehive uncovered on campus was the segway the last time I wrote about Duchesne Academy, an all girls Catholic school in Omaha. Eric Krakowski, assistant principal and sustainability coordinator, traveled a little farther this time to speak about sustainability. What impressed me this time was not solely data on recycling or composting, but how a small school of about 400 (students and staff) proves what they are doing is practical, beneficial and, most importantly, attainable for anyone with the same vision. “How I’ve seen things happen is like ripples in the pond,” Eric said. “Change begins with you,” he observed.

The catalyst at Duchesne followed an encyclical from Pope Francis in 2015, challenging people to look at creation as a gift from God. Administration support and timely funding were key.

Whatever prompts a school, business or community to embrace sustainability, Eric outlined ways to “build your TEAM”. Those involved must name their inspiration and identify “the allies, champions and donors who share your passion and vision.” Other ways to overcome challenges are to “do your research and know what you’re talking about; connect with local resources; anticipate questions, and engage whoever holds the purse strings,” he said. “I’ve been amazed on how little push back we’ve gotten.”

By now, sustainability has become part of the fabric of Duchesne, something every freshman class learns. Another key is to involve your entire organization Eric said. “We have zero waste events, this is part of our identity – some families choose us because of our sustainability identity.”

Eric suggests going for “the low-hanging fruit” first as a start to “massive change in our world.” “Build on the success of what you were doing before.” Recycling can be a logical first step for some schools.

“My hope and goal is we can inspire others to do this,” Eric said.

I see efforts to mirror this Omaha school’s accomplishments growing from the ground up – individual buildings or districts rather than assistance from the State of Nebraska. In a decade, perhaps, it will be common to have a sustainability plan as schools compost, install solar arrays, achieve zero waste, add sustainability to the curriculum, reduce energy consumption and even plant gardens and orchards.

Keep Alliance Beautiful: Back to School

Saturday, at approximately 12:50 a.m. MT, NSP was informed that a stolen Subaru Legacy had fled an attempted traffic stop in northeast Colorado. The vehicle was believed to have entered Nebraska. A trooper was able to locate the vehicle as it was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 near Ogallala.

The Subaru exited I-80 at the Ogallala interchange and proceeding northbound into Ogallala. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver immediately accelerated and turned westbound onto Highway 26. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The Subaru fled westbound on Highway 26 with speeds in excess of 130 miles per hour. The vehicle continued until voluntarily coming to a stop between Lisco and Broadwater. The driver was then taken into custody without further incident.&nbsp; Troopers located 13 grams of methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

The driver, Kage Anthony, 19, of North Platte, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine, theft by receiving stolen property $5,000+, and other charges.

North Platte man arrested in the Panhandle after high speed pursuit

The Sandhills Drive-In in Alliance recently announced a piece of drive-in history that they will debuting next season. Edison Red Nest and his wife Courtney recently traveled to Skowhegan Maine where they purchased a sign from their town drive-in called The Skowhegan. 

The Skowhegan first opened in 1953 and closed on September 23rd after 70 years in business. Red Nest says that preserving the history of the drive-in was important.

"My wife and I are very passionate and devoted to making sure the drive-in's stay alive," Red Nest said. "So even though we can't save that drive-in, we can save a piece of it."

The process is underway to bring the Skowhegan sign to Alliance, and they will redo one side of the sign, so as patrons leaving the drive-in it will still read Sandhills Drive-In and the other side will say Skowhegan as visitors are leaving.

Red Nest says that he wants to thank the great people of Skowhegan, saying the town was one of the friendliest town's he and his wife have ever been to. The new sign will be debuted starting in the 2024 drive-in season.

Alliance Public Schools Superintendent Troy Unzicker announced on Monday afternoon that tonight's (Monday) school board meeting has been postponed until next Monday, on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.

&nbsp;Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance is adding a new childcare center. The name of the center is Building Blocks Play School and is for employees of the BBGH. Shannon Seidler is the Director of Building Blocks Play School and with demand from employees all spots have been already filled. She tells Panhandle Post that there is a possibility of opening the childcare center to the community, but for right now it's a start to relieve some strain of lack of childcare services.

"This idea was created for the convenience for those employees and to have that reliable, quality daycare," Seidler said. "There is a childcare crisis across the state of Nebraska, so we're just trying to help with that and help our community and the employees of Box Butte General Hospital."

Building Blocks takes children from 6 weeks old through about five or six years old and does not offer after school programs.  Seidler says BBGH is still hiring for positions within the  Childcare Center, that includes a full-time cook position and teacher and assistant teacher positions.

There will be an open house open to the community and employees on Thursday Oct. 12 from 1-6 pm, though the building is not open to operations until the center is approved for licensing in the near future.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -&nbsp;The Western Community College Area Board of Governors voted to amend its 2023-24 fiscal year budget at the October board meeting.

The board voted to reduce the capital fund levy by approximately 1.65 percent from what was previously approved. The tax levy for the 2023-2024 fiscal year will equal&nbsp;1.85 cents per $100&nbsp;of property valuations throughout the 12&nbsp;½&nbsp;county service area. This results in an&nbsp;approximate $200,000 decrease in the capital improvement budget that was previously reviewed.&nbsp;

WNCC was one of five local taxing authorities that participated in a joint property tax hearing held on September 20. Board chair Lynne Klemke stated that some board members and WNCC administrators attended the hearing and the public’s comments did not go unnoticed.

“The hearing afforded board members that were present the opportunity to listen and gain additional insight into what our constituents are thinking,” said Klemke. “Students are our number one focus, but we want to continue to be responsive to taxpayers. Our goal is to give our students the best educational opportunities while also being mindful of our taxpayer dollars.”

President Greg Dart echoed Klemke, and appreciated community members who chose to speak and voice their concerns.

“We are fortunate to have come to a resolution after the public hearing that reduces the college's tax burden but not cutting operating budgets that would have a negative impact on our students," Dart said. I have also had great conversations with Governor Pillen, and with the passing of Legislative Bill 243, we’re heartened to hear that he feels the state is in a good position to help fund community colleges in the following years while also helping taxpayers.”&nbsp;

Under LB 243, taxpayers are able to apply for a 100 percent income tax credit for property tax paid to community colleges to help offset costs.

With the amendment of the budget, the WCCA Board will hold an additional budget hearing starting at 1 p.m.,&nbsp;Wednesday, Nov. 15 with the regularly scheduled board meeting to follow.&nbsp;All meetings are open to the public.

WCCA Board of Governors reduces tax levy request

On August 4th, 2022, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Deputy Anthony Osborn #92119 was on duty when he heard the communications center broadcast “someone is being shot at Main Street Market, I’m trying to get further".&nbsp; He was within a few blocks of that location, responded with lights and siren, and arrived in less than one minute.

As soon as he arrived, he observed a male with his hands over his head, and a handgun laying nearby on the ground.&nbsp; Witnesses confirmed that a man had been shot and the man with his hands up was the shooter. Deputy Osborn immediately engaged the man and after several verbal orders to get on the ground, he complied. Deputy Osborn immediately handcuffed him.&nbsp;

After handcuffing the male and leaving him on the ground, Deputy Osborn ran to the male who was shot. He observed the man’s wound in the area to be his left upper stomach near his chest. A bystander was assisting by holding his own shirt over the wound.&nbsp; Deputy Osborn told him to keep applying pressure.&nbsp; Deputy Osborn notified the communications center of the location of the wound, and ran to his vehicle for his medical bag.&nbsp;

At this time other officers were arriving on scene. Deputy Osborn notified them of the location of the shooter in handcuffs, the handgun, and the injured party.

Deputy Osborn moved to the injured man and applied a chest seal to the entry wound on his chest.&nbsp; With assistance from another officer, they located an exit wound on the man’s back, and Deputy Osborn placed another seal on that wound. &nbsp;EMS arrived after both seals were applied, and transported the victim to the hospital.&nbsp;

Deputy Osborn remained at the scene to assist with the investigation.&nbsp;

We later learned that Deputy Osborn properly placed both seals, and the emergency room did not need to adjust them.&nbsp; The victim was taken to surgery and survived.

By Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's OfficeOn August 4th, 2022, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Deputy Anthony Osborn #92119 was on duty when he heard the communications center broadcast “someone is being shot at Main Street Market, I’m trying to get further".&nbsp; He was within a few blocks of that location, responded with lights and siren, and arrived in less than one minute.As soon as he arrived, he observed a male with his hands over his head, and a handgun laying nearby on the ground.&nbsp; Witnesses confirmed that a man had been shot and the man with his hands up was the shooter. Deputy Osborn immediately engaged the man and after several verbal orders to get on the ground, he complied. Deputy Osborn immediately handcuffed him.&nbsp;After handcuffing the male and leaving him on the ground, Deputy Osborn ran to the male who was shot. He observed the man’s wound in the area to be his left upper stomach near his chest. A bystander was assisting by holding his own shirt over the wound.&nbsp; Deputy Osborn told him to keep applying pressure.&nbsp; Deputy Osborn notified the communications center of the location of the wound, and ran to his vehicle for his medical bag.&nbsp;At this time other officers were arriving on scene. A Chadron man was found guilty last week  of child abuse in the death of his infant daughter in 2022.

27-year-old Riley Lenhart faces sentencing on December 4th of one count of intentional Child Abuse resulting in death after a jury found the man guilty after just an hour and a half of deliberation on Thursday.

By Western Nebraska Community CollegeSCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -&nbsp;The Western Community College Area Board of Governors voted to amend its 2023-24 fiscal year budget at the October board meeting.The board voted to reduce the capital fund levy by approximately 1.65 percent from what was previously approved. The tax levy for the 2023-2024 fiscal year will equal&nbsp;1.85 cents per $100&nbsp;of property valuations throughout the 12&nbsp;½&nbsp;county service area. This results in an&nbsp;approximate $200,000 decrease in the capital improvement budget that was previously reviewed.&nbsp;WNCC was one of five local taxing authorities that participated in a joint property tax hearing held on September 20. Board chair Lynne Klemke stated that some board members and WNCC administrators attended the hearing and the public’s comments did not go unnoticed.“The hearing afforded board members that were present the opportunity to listen and gain additional insight into what our constituents are thinking,” said Klemke. “Students are our number one focus, but we want to continue to be responsive to taxpayers. Our goal is to give our students the best educational opportunities while also being mindful of our taxpayer dollars.”President Greg Dart echoed Klemke, and appreciated community members who chose to speak and voice their concerns.“We are fortunate to have come to a resolution after the public hearing that reduces the college's tax burden but not cutting operating budgets that would have a negative impact on our students," Dart said. I have also had great conversations with Governor Pillen, and with the passing of Legislative Bill 243, we’re heartened to hear that he feels the state is in a good position to help fund community colleges in the following years while also helping taxpayers.”&nbsp;Under LB 243, taxpayers are able to apply for a 100 percent income tax credit for property tax paid to community colleges to help offset costs.With the amendment of the budget, the WCCA Board will hold an additional budget hearing starting at 1 p.m.,&nbsp;Wednesday, Nov. 15 with the regularly scheduled board meeting to follow.&nbsp;All meetings are open to the public.

The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. Mountain time in the Buffalo Soldiers Barracks at the park located just west of Crawford at 3200 West Hwy. 20.

If approved, the nonresident permit fee would increase in 2024 to: Deer, $332; Statewide Whitetail Buck, $747; Statewide Buck, $992; Restricted Statewide Buck, $792; Season Choice Antlerless Only, $92; Special Antlerless Only, $92; Landowner Deer, $166; Antelope, $232; Landowner Antelope, $116; Turkey, $140; and Landowner Turkey, $70.

The new fees would help offset the lost revenue from reducing the quota of nonresident deer, antelope and turkey permits. If approved, money from the fees would be deposited into the Game Cash Fund, which supports the wildlife and fisheries divisions and their research, conservation and management efforts.

There was a car accident involving two vehicles and three parties in Alliance on Wednesday afternoon. Alliance Police were called to Flack Ave and 10th St at approximately 2:55 PM where they found a black GMC Sierra and a Nissan had collided. 

Alliance Police Officer Tyler Sherlock tells Panhandle Post that the two individuals in the Nissan had to be extricated from the vehicle and be transported by EMS to Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance. 

While a cause to the accident has not been revealed, Sherlock says that high rate of speed is possible in this accident and that the Alliance Police Department will review video footage near the scene of the accident. 

At the time of the accident, it is unclear whether the injuries sustained to the two individuals in the Nissan are life threatening, but they were serious as Officer Sherlock said one of the parties was unconscious at the scene. Alliance Volunteer Fire Department, Box Butte County Sheriff's Office and two Nebraska Patrol Officers assisted the Alliance Police Department on scene.

Panhandle Post will hope to get an update on the accident if more details are revealed in the next couple of days.

27-year-old Riley Lenhart is facing charges of Intentional Child Abuse Resulting in Death. 14 witnesses have been subpoenaed to testify in the case. 

The Child was found unresponsive on June 19, 2022, while Lenhart allegedly was taking care of the young girl. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.&nbsp;

Trial for Chadron man accused of being responsible for death of infant continues

OCTOBER 4, 2023 (ALLIANCE, NEB.) — The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating a crash&nbsp; that resulted in three fatalities Tuesday in Box Butte County. At approximately 9:45 a.m. MT Tuesday, NSP and the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a two-vehicle crash that had occurred on Highway 2, several miles east of Alliance. 

Upon arrival, responders found that three occupants of one of the vehicles were deceased. Preliminary investigation shows that a Subaru Outback, driven by Julie Sears, 57, of Santa Rosa, California, was westbound on Highway 2. A semi tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound. 

Investigators believe the Subaru crossed the center line and struck the semi. Julie Sears, along with Gary Sears, 82, and Joan Sears, 79, both of Hyannis, Nebraska, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the semi, Erich Rumple, 37, of Spencer, Nebraska, was treated for minor 

NSP and the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office were assisted on scene by the Alliance Police Department and the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting a full crash reconstruction. The investigation remains ongoing.

HOT SPRINGS, S.D. – Cave tours at Wind Cave National Park are resuming Wednesday, October 4, ahead of the upcoming three-day weekend, which will culminate in the park’s Native Americans’ Day celebration Monday, October 9. &nbsp;

“We are very happy to offer cave tours again and look forward to hosting people this Monday who want to see the cave and experience some of the art and living culture of our Native American communities,” said park Superintendent Leigh Welling. “Tours resume this Wednesday with the first tour beginning at 9 a.m. and the last tour going in at 3 p.m.”&nbsp;

Native Americans’ Day events kick off in the Visitors Center Auditorium at 9 a.m. on October 9th&nbsp;with a welcome from Superintendent Welling, followed by remarks from&nbsp;National Park Service Native American Affairs Liaison, Dorothy FireCloud. Others on the morning schedule include metalsmith Jhon Goes in Center, and award-winning fashion designer Tosa Two Heart. The dedication of the sculpture “Cȟaŋgléška-Wakȟaŋ”, or “Sacred Hoop,” will occur in the lobby at 11:30 a.m. with artist Kelly Looking Horse. &nbsp;

Activities move outside at 1:30 p.m. with world-renowned hoop dancers Starr Chief Eagle and Jasmine Bell. At 3:30 p.m. Emmy Her Many Horses, a Sicangu Lakota author, musician, and actress will conclude activities with a presentation entitled “Classical, Traditional, Ancestral: What Makes it Native?”&nbsp;

The winter cave tour schedule begins Sunday, October 15, with tours of the Garden of Eden at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is an hour-long tour with 150 stairs on it. There will be an hour and a half long Fairgrounds Tour at 1 p.m. with 450 stairs on it. &nbsp;

The cave temperature is 54 degrees year-around and a light coat or sweater is recommended along with good walking shoes. &nbsp;

To provide more reliable service, the entire elevator system is being replaced and modernized in 2024. Information about closures and tour impacts will be provided as the construction schedule is determined. &nbsp;

But the Mission Store does so much more, including offering mini-grants to non-profit organizations in Box Butte County. Now is the time to submit those requests for funds!

The Mission Store accepts donated clothing and household goods to reuse and recycle. Clothing, shoes, and accessories are sold for all ages. Other goods that can be found in the store include kitchen items, furniture, books, and games. A section of the store is set aside for holiday decorations.

The Mission Store is more than just a used clothing and miscellaneous store. They are a non-profit organization, run solely by volunteers. Outside of funds needed for building maintenance, cleaning, and utilities, all money earned is used to benefit our Box Butte County area and our people!

Who is helped with the funds from the store's sales? The Mission Store helps to fund the Indian Mission Church of God, the Alliance Ministerial Association, and the Backpack Program. In addition, last year $65,000 was given to non-profits in our county through the Mini-Grant Program.

All organized, non-profit groups are eligible for funds through the Mini-Grant Program, which must be used for projects that will benefit the entire group. Funds, if awarded, must not be used for salaries, insurance, or operating expenses.

Forms for Mission Store grants may be picked up at the Mission Store, 302 Box Butte Ave, Alliance, during store hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday.

Applicants should include in their proposals:

*The name and description of the program or event they are requesting funding for.

* An explanation regarding how the grant funds will be used.

Getting Ahead: Mission Store Mini-Grants

Children collect facts like a sack bulging with Halloween candy. From listening to a parent or older sister or brother to what they hear in the halls and classroom at school, the latest generation soaks up information like a sponge. Keep Alliance Beautiful’s Carlie Foster builds on what students already know about how they can “reduce, reuse and recycle”.

Carlie started on Aug. 28 as KAB’s education coordinator, taking over for Kari Bargen who teaches for Alliance Public Schools. A paraprofessional post with APS was in Carlie’s sights before she was approached by KAB Executive Director Kathy Worley. “It works better with our family schedule,” Carlie said, adding she loves working with kids and likes “teaching them something useful and important.”

Initially, Carlie is striving to connect with kids in every school Alliance has (public and private). “I’m hoping to break into the middle school and high school with something.” She may reach out to Box Butte County’s home school families and Hemingford Public Schools as the academic year goes by.

Technology is another tool Carlie will consider. During a conversation with Dixie Nelson, part of the recycling center crew, Dixie mentioned that one of her grandsons had shown her a tiktok about recycling. “Technology might be a good way to get your foot in the door,” Carlie commented.

Education continues to be a hallmark of KAB’s mission. For Carlie, her first month has seen success with tried and true as well as new activities and challenges. Black Ops returns for third graders, expanding to all five Grandview classrooms and St. Agnes Academy. Second grade at Emerson is having fun with competitive recycling. For their challenge, “I created monster guys to put recycling in and empty them. Whoever empties them the most gets a pizza party at the end of October,” she said.

Carlie will consider ways to pique interest in the three R’s as well as being good environmental stewards in general. She listed ideas including revival of a recycling club Kari had at Grandview, presenting at the public library’s storytime and local youth clubs as well programs at Dobby’s Frontier Town.

Recycling has been something Carlie has embraced as an adult, especially through her family’s fireworks and vending businesses. “I don’t remember doing anything with recycling at school,” she said. “I do remember cleaning up the playground.” She hopes that if today’s students “have a face and a voice for it, it will make some sort of a difference.” Before long, the moniker “recycling lady” will follow her like a shadow.

Carlie is an Alliance High School graduate. She and her husband, John, have three children: Lincoln, Penelope and Jessee. She plays league volleyball, loves to read a good book and spend time at the lake with her family in the summer.

Miss and Teen Chadron entries due Friday

A Scottsbluff woman was arrested Monday after a crash that resulted in injuries to two juvenile males. Scottsbluff Police responded to a call at 10:35 PM to the intersection of 5th Avenue and East Overland and upon arrival found a 2002 red Cadillac Escalade and 2007 Chevrolet Malibu in the intersection.&nbsp;

The ensuing investigation uncovered that the Cadillac was driven by 29-year-old Lorinda Cabrera of Scottsbluff, and the Chevrolet Malibu was driven by 41-year-old Elisia Rotherham of Scottsbluff.

Witnesses said the Cadillac Escalade was southbound on 5th Ave and ran a red light, striking the Chevrolet Malibu that was west bound on East Overland and had a green light.

&nbsp;The Chevrolet Malibu had two juvenile male passengers that were injured and transported to Regional West Medical Center in personal vehicles. A DUI investigation was conducted on Lorinda, the driver of the Cadillac Escalade. Lorinda was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, traffic signal violation, seatbelt violation, and no license on person.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Nebraska Game and Parks officials are asking people to give space to a moose that has been observed along the North Platte River in Scottsbluff and Gering. Although moose can appear to be docile, they have been known to become aggressive toward people and pets.

People should stay at least 50 yards away from the moose and not attempt to feed it. When near the moose, it is especially important to have pets on a leash.

Aggressive moose often show a variety of signs, including pinned back or flattened ears with fur raised around the neck and back. Other signs are a lowered head, stomping feet and teeth clicking or licking of its lips. In the case of a moose charging, people are encouraged to run and hide behind the nearest large object, such as a tree or car, to separate themselves from the animal. The moose has been observed on streets, so drivers should be especially attentive to avoid a collision.

While not common, moose sightings have occurred in Nebraska dating back to the 1970s. Moose in the Panhandle’s North Platte valley are believed to have arrived in the state by following river corridors from Colorado and Wyoming.
