We recently received our invitation to the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) banquet on May 6. Celebrating 50 years in Alliance, they are asking everyone to wear clothes from the 70s. The 70s was a decade when I was in high school, in college, and started my first teaching job at Alliance High School. I know all about the fashion of the decade. Just about everything was in style at some point.

The late 60s and early 70s were the mini skirt years. We were all skinny teenagers with great legs, so mid-thigh skirts were okay with us. Parents and schools were less supportive. Around 1970 culottes became the big fashion trend. They were a great cross between skirts and shorts, and a whole lot easier to sit in. Our parents gladly bought them when we did our back-to-school shopping.

However, they violated school dress codes. Girls had to wear dresses or skirts every day and got sent home to change when our clothes were unacceptable for any reason. The culotte wars were on. Culotte designs changed to look like pleated skirts. Still not okay. Then they had fabric flaps over the front and back so they looked like skirts. Still not okay. I had a favorite orange culotte dress. The back was seamed all the way down, but it was still a split skirt, pleated in front. I usually got by with that. There were days when a dozen girls in our high school of 200 were sent home.

While I think dress codes have their place in schools, they often go too far. They tend to discriminate against girls, minorities, marginalized kids, and kids who live in poverty. I had a student whose only coat advertised Marlboro, and he wore it not only to school but to classes as well. We teachers had enough sense to ignore it, knowing his family couldn't afford anything else. But another student pushed it to the principal, and the coat was banned. How humiliating.

Schools should ban clothing that is racist or profane, and they should be able to say, "Wear clothes that are appropriate." I know this puts an extra burden on principals, but it avoids nonsense like the culotte wars of my high school years.

What finally changed our school's dress code? The elementary teachers rebelled. They had recess duty. They sat on the floor with kids. One day they started wearing pantsuits. The superintendent gave in, so the women teaching higher grades demanded the same right. Eventually, my junior year, even we girls in high school got to wear dress slacks to classes. And culottes.

When I got my invitation for RSVP, I pulled out my box of old patterns, as I sewed a lot of my own clothes. The memories of the outfits I made brought many smiles. My culotte pattern was a Marlo Thomas design.

I wore a lot of dresses - bright colors, floral prints, geometric designs. Shirts had bell sleeves, embroidered designs, peasant or cowl necklines. They might be smock tops or halter tops or tied at the waist. We wore ponchos and crocheted vests. Pants and jeans were bell bottoms or high-waisted with wide legs. Plaids were huge. Elephant bells were obnoxiously hard to walk in, as they kept wrapping around ankles, so I never bought a second pair. Polyester ruled, and Disco brought shiny new fabrics like Qiana and fake suede.

Our shoes: knee-high boots, chunky heels, platform soles, Birkenstocks, Earth shoes, Chuck Taylors. My favorite was a pair of huaraches with wedge heels.

By the time I moved to Alliance, the dress length normalized at below the knee. Clothes were professional. I wore lots of dresses and pantsuits to work in the late 70s.

What wasn't ever in style? Tight pants. Anything that looked worn out, with holes or frayed edges. During that entire decade I owned nothing black.

I've hit the Mission Store and the Collection Basket. 70s clothes choices were pretty slim. I did find a couple of possibilities, but no culottes. It'll be great fun to see what everyone comes up with as we celebrate RSVP's 50th Anniversary!

Blake is an Alliance native who is enjoying retirement after decades as a hostler at BNSF Railway. Jenn is originally from Scottsbluff and currently provides daycare.

Q: How long have you been on curbside, and why did you sign up?

Blake: From the beginning because it was convenient for them to come get it. You’d go to one (of KAB’s trailers) and it was full and you’d go to another one.

Blake: Newspaper, paperboard, all types of plastic – plastic wrap, plastic bottles and toys, I did the frame for a toy lawn mower once; (also) glass, tin, aluminum, anything and everything you’ll take from me. I keep scrap iron and have people take it.

Q: How has this service influenced your opinion of recycling?

Blake: Makes me research what can and can’t be recycled. I try to give you guys what I can every time. (Before signing up for curbside) I was loading the car with 200-300 pounds every two to three weeks.

Q: Newest thing you’ve added to the bag?

Blake: Any type of plastic wraps, not just bags, styrofoam, anything – for the longest time I didn’t think I could recycle it.

Q: Why do you feel it is important to recycle?

Blake: Because humans are the worst thing that could happen to the planet Earth . . . if you took away humans it would thrive. I started (recycling) 25 years ago because Boy Scouts had a newspaper drive.

Q: Other “green” practices at your home?

The couple recently added a used compost barrel to their backyard. Blake asked a local man if he could take it off his hands after seeing the horizontal cylinder idle for months. He also repurposed a stock tank as a swimming pool for their grandchildren, and employed bricks from a demolished bar as pavers. Blake: I recycle and reuse whenever I can. We take clothing to the Mission Store or Goodwill.

Blake has collected numerous panes of glass he’d like to make into a greenhouse. Composting is also something new for the Weisgerbers this spring, which will eventually provide organic material for their container garden – sourced from spent feed totes. Blake: I want to reduce what I throw away (even) further.

KAB Curbside: Weisgerber's of Alliance, Scottsbluff 

CHADRON – The first years of the Nebraska Territory will be the subject of historian Jeff Barnes’s presentation at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Tuesday, May 2. The 6:30 p.m. talk is sponsored by Humanities Nebraska.

According to Barnes, Nebraska’s approach to establishing a territory was unusual.

“We actually had a territory where an Indian chief was proclaimed as its first governor, where banks printed and passed their own money, and where women nearly first won the right to vote,” he said. “We went through a time when governors were seemingly switched every few months, and where the battle for the capital was a constant.”

The steps taken during the 1850s set the path Nebraska followed for generations to come, according to Barnes. He will share rare images, maps, and stories of the unconventional first years of Nebraska, a territory that newspapers of the day called the Queen of the Prairies.

Barnes, a former newspaper reporter and editor, lives in Omaha. He is a two-time recipient of the Nebraska Book Award, a former board trustee with the Nebraska State Historical Society, past chair of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission, and a speaker with Humanities Nebraska.

Approximately 82,900 tickets were claimed between the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the general public on-sale on Wednesday and Thursday. Approximately 17,900 of the tickets were claimed in the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the rest on Wednesday and Thursday. National Day of Prayer set in Alliance

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The city of St. 
Joseph opened its search for a new police chief on Feb 24. 
Soon, the public will have its chance to meet the top candidates for the
 job.

Philip Lukens (Alliance police chief), Paul Luster
 (Kansas City, Mo., Police major) Stephenie Price (deputy police chief at 
Beauford, S.C.) and Rance Quinn (acting deputy chief at Kansas
 City, Kan.) are the four finalists. No current employees of the 
St.&nbsp;Joseph Police Department applied for the position.

The finalists have been selected from a pool of 23 applicants.

St. Joseph City Manager Bryan Carter said the candidates will come to the city on May 10 and 11.

"They'll come to town on the 10th and we'll do a community tour," Carter said on the KFEQ Hotline. "We'll
 take them around St. Joseph and introduce them to some of the areas in 
town. They'll have an opportunity, as a group, to meet with police 
department staff."

During that time, the candidates will have final interviews and have meet-and-greet opportunities for the public.

"We'll
 have a series of three-panel interviews," Carter said. "We'll have
 a panel of community members, city leadership staff and police 
department employees."

There's a community meet-and greet -event 
set for May 11 from 6:30 to 8:00pm in Spratt Hall, Rooms 214 and 216, on
 the Missouri Western campus. The public is invited to attend.

The
 city hired Public Sector Search &amp; Consulting, a firm specializing 
in national level recruitment for police executives.&nbsp;Carter says the 
city hopes to have a new police chief announced by the end of May.

"Once
 we get one of these candidates selected, assuming we select one of 
these candidates and I anticipate we will, we'll start working with that
 candidate to negotiate terms of employment and they'll have to go 
through a police background check."

Carter says the community will
 have a chance to meet these police chief candidates here soon and see 
for themselves how much work went into this process.

"This will be the part we all see," he said. "There's been a lot going on behind the scenes to get to this point."

Chris
 Connally retired as St. Joseph's police chief last September after 
serving 17 years. Dave Hart has served as interim chief in the meantime.

We had a blast today at Grandview Elementary's fire drill! Our TRTV was on display, and the students were eager to check it out. 

It's always a pleasure to connect with the community and show off our equipment, and we were thrilled to see the students' excitement.

UPDATE: APD showcases Tactical Response Vehicle at Grandview Elementary

CHADRON&nbsp;–&nbsp;Demoine Adams, the Chief Executive Officer for Teammates Mentoring which serves more than 20,000 students in Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, and Wyoming, spoke at the Graves Lecture Series April 12.

Adams, a former Nebraska football player, said he gets to do what he loves every day by working for Teammates. The organization was started 32 years ago by former University of Nebraska-Lincoln football head coach Tom Osborne and his wife, Nancy.

“When my former coach and mentor chose me to serve as CEO for his organization, he simply said, ‘Demoine, I don't want you to try to be like someone else. I want you to be yourself. That's why we hired you.’ He told me he believes in me and in my heart. He sees my potential, and trusts me,” Adams said.

Adams said his parents were teenagers when he was born so his grandmother and great-grandparents helped raise him.

“They taught me agape, or unconditional love. Open yourself up to learning and embracing other cultures. Take care of your business on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. Take care of your business when it comes to leadership. That's the only way you can be an all-around person,” Adams said.

Growing up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, he was a youngster tempted by gangs and drugs, when an English teacher stepped in and helped him direct his energy in a positive direction.

“Mrs. Houston asked me to stay after class. She threw me off because instead of asking, ‘What are you doing?’ she asked, ‘How are you doing?’ I'm so thankful she put on her mentor hat and was more than a teacher. She met me where I was at. She helped me fit in regardless of my weaknesses. She helped me to focus on my strengths and get on another path,” Adams said.

He expressed his gratitude for multiple mentors who encouraged him.

“I had people give me hope and a lot of those people did not look like me. If I hadn’t had examples to see and follow, I would have given up,” he said.

He said he plans to use his role with Teammates to help young people learn that education is important.

“In this game called life, we're losing right now because we're choosing to be negative, we're choosing to be rude, and we're choosing to be divided,” Adams said. “We can be civil. Civil is a word we don't use much anymore. Everyone wants to make up reasons and excuses as to why they are so angry because of the injustices and inequalities out there. We're playing the same game that was played decades and centuries ago. We need to stop feeding ourselves with social media that influences negative thoughts and actions.”

He recalled a challenge from his mentors to give his best efforts instead of excuses.

“I've learned how to embrace all people and learn from all communities. I want to be culturally competent. To be an all-around successful leader, cultural capital is a game changer. Try to understand other people, their perspectives, and where they come from,” Adams said.

Werner Construction of Hastings is the prime contractor for this project. Work includes bridge
repair over the Tri-State Canal, new roadway and driveway asphalt placement, and earth
construction with seeding.


For the bridge work, traffic will be in one lane with temporary traffic signals. This is anticipated to last
two months. For asphalt placement, traffic will be maintained with daytime lane closures with a pilot
car and flaggers. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is November.

LINCOLN — Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have conducted alcohol and tobacco compliance checks at numerous businesses across Nebraska.

During the months of March and April, investigators have conducted tobacco compliance checks in Antelope, Boyd, Holt, Knox and Pierce counties. In total, 85 businesses were inspected. Nine of those businesses sold tobacco to a person under 21 years of age. The compliance rate for the checks was 89%.&nbsp;The compliance checks were funded by Areas Substance Abuse Prevention coalition under grant #B08T1083064-01 from the Office of National Drug Control Policy and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The views, policies, and opinions expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of ONDCP, SAMHSA, or HHS.

On Saturday, April 15, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Scottsbluff County. This project&nbsp;was supported in whole or part by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

In total, 18 businesses were inspected. All of those businesses refused to sell alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 100%. All of the businesses check the minor’s ID.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, April 5, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks&nbsp;in Dawson County. This project was supported in whole or part by grant #93.959 under the SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Region II Human Services, and the Nebraska DHHS Division of Behavioral Health.&nbsp;

In total, 10 businesses were inspected. Six of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 40%. All of the businesses checked the minor’s ID.&nbsp;

Clerks who sell tobacco or alcohol to a minor are cited. Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor to referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. The businesses involved in these compliance checks included convenience stores, restaurants, liquor stores, and bars.

“Each year over 200 school age kids receive important dental care at Dental Days,” said Janelle Visser of Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD). Visser is one of the coordinators behind the annual event.

KEARNEY —&nbsp;The University of Nebraska at Kearney Wind Ensemble will 
present concerts in five western Nebraska communities during its 
upcoming spring tour.

Performances are scheduled for 11 a.m. April 27 at North Platte High 
School, 2 p.m. April 27 at Bridgeport Public Schools, 9 a.m. April 28 at
 Mitchell High School, 1 p.m. April 28 at Hemingford Public Schools and 7
 p.m. April 28 at Alliance High School. The concert in Alliance is free 
and open to the public.

Wind Ensemble members will also visit the Black Hills of South Dakota for some sightseeing before returning to Kearney.

Open to any UNK student, the Wind Ensemble is selected by competitive
 audition each year. The 49-member group performs on campus and across 
the region, with a recruiting and concert tour scheduled each spring. 
UNK Director of Bands Duane Bierman leads the Wind Ensemble.

Ahead of the spring tour, the Wind Ensemble and UNK Symphonic Band 
will present a free public concert 7:30 p.m. April 26 at the Fine Arts 
Recital Hall on campus.

UNK Wind Ensemble will make local stops this month

Our waitress Tracy with my sidekick Betty Jo Garrett This weeks road trip was such a treat. It is amazing how many wonderful places are just under our nose, and we don't think about them.&nbsp; Well, this place is definingly a-go-to destination. We went to the Log Cabin Restaurant in Gering.&nbsp; It is located at 1205 M St. You sure can't miss the place. It is indeed a log cabin.

Our first pleasure was getting to meet our waitress Tracy.&nbsp; Tracy has worked there for 35 years. This girl is big on hospitality, she surely is one of the best waitress's I have ever had.

First thing we spotted was an amazing salad bar. Our favorite treat, and this one would become our favorite salad bar. There of course was lettuce, and dressing. Not a bunch of toppings because you wouldn't have room on your plate.&nbsp; Instead there were many different salads, all home made, and all really awesome. Even with a one trip with a meal, I knew most of my meal was going home. There were even a couple of salads I had never had before. Oh so good, I can't wait to go back.

For the meal, I had fried chicken and mashed taters, Betty Jo had a chicken fried steak and hash browns. It was huge, and thick. Most of the&nbsp; chicken fries are pretty thin, and lots of coating. This one was so big it looked like a cow walked by and fell apart on her plate. This also is fried on a grill, not deep fried, she said it was so tender and fantastic. We also had home made bread with butter with our meal.

Tracy stopped back to ask if we would like pie. Oh no, unless, I&nbsp;put it in my pocket, that was the only way.&nbsp; I had no room for anything. My tummy gurgled happily as we went out the door.

The prices are oh so reasonable; it's down home food. Breakfast served all day.&nbsp; You can set at the dinner like counter, grab a booth or table.

And Itruly believe it won't be your last trip there.&nbsp; I can't wait to go back.&nbsp; See you there!&nbsp;&nbsp;

Road Trip: Log Cabin Restaurant in Gering 

Chadron - Join us Saturday, May 6, at 3:00 pm in the basement of the Library for a meeting with historian Randy Kane. Mr. Kane will evaluate the influences that brought about the killing of Crazy Horse, just four months after he surrendered his people at the Red Cloud Agency, May 6, 1877.

Randy Kane is retired from the National Park Service, where he spent thirty-seven years as a history interpreter, mostly at historic sites in the American West. From 20201-2022 he worked summers and volunteered at Fort Robinson History Center and presently volunteers at the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, Nebraska. His article, “What Crazy Horse Look Like?” appeared in the winter 2018 issue of Nebraska History.

Historian Kane to present 'Who Killed Crazy Horse' at Chadron library

CHADRON – Chadron State College students and employees gathered Wednesday in the Student Center Ballroom for the eighth annual Rising Sophomore Awards ceremony.

President of CSC, Dr. Randy Rhine, who is retiring at the end of June, was the guest speaker. He encouraged those in attendance to continue to follow their dreams and goals even when obstacles appear. He shared his first plans in college included pre-medicine and pre-law, before he discovered a career path and mentors in the field of higher education.

Several awards were given to current CSC students who have exemplified leadership in their classes or through campus involvement. The list of honorees follows.
