Ready for some adventure? Ditch your hotel room this summer and stay somewhere a bit unconventional – like a tepee or a remodeled caboose. Nebraska’s state parks have several unexpected opportunities like these that you might want to try.

Here are several lodging options that are sure to give you stories to tell.

Historic lodging at Fort Robinson State Park

An active military post from 1874 to 1948, Fort Robinson State Park is full of history. Today, visitors can enjoy staying in the stately buildings that once served as housing for the fort’s soldiers and officers. Stay in the 1909 enlisted men’s quarters or in the former officer’s quarters, which date from 1874 to 1909. These options sleep between two and 20 people. Comanche Hall, which can sleep up to 60, is a great option for a family reunion or other large gathering. All options have kitchens, baths and bedrooms. Larger cabins also feature living rooms.

This isn’t a camping opportunity you get every day: to sleep in a tepee. Platte River State Park offers four tepees for guests to use. Each tepee can accommodate six to eight people. Wooden floors replace the packed earth of the traditional dwelling, offering added comfort, and a fire pit, picnic table, grill, water hydrant and pit toilet are located nearby.

Cabooses at Two Rivers State Recreation Area

At Two Rivers State Recreation Area, 10 Union Pacific cabooses have been remodeled and restored for park lodging. Up to six people can stay in a caboose, with two bunk beds in the rear and two mattresses in the cupola. The cabooses are air-conditioned and have a modern bathroom and shower. The kitchen includes a stove, microwave, refrigerator and sink. A table, with four chairs and couch for two, serve as the dining area. If you prefer dining outside, there is a deck with picnic table, grill and fire ring.

Glamping cabins at Platte River State Park

Platte River State Park’s three glamping cabins combine modern comforts with a nature immersive experience. Each cabin sleeps two, and the queen-sized bed may be rolled through oversized French doors onto the deck so guests can sleep beneath the stars. We've all seen silos. We are, after all, an agricultural state. Silo is also used to describe a major problem that exists in large corporations - the refusal or inability to share information with other groups. In the Poverty Task Force, we've found that these silos also exist between agencies, and they create major roadblocks for those needing assistance.

Where do people go when they need help? Northwest Community Action Partnership? Department of Health and Human Services? Western Community Health Resource? Department of Labor? Alliance Housing Authority? United Way? There are several agencies, mostly through the state government, that provide services to people with limited incomes. Each provides services to meet some need and involves an application process and proof of income.

Sometimes these services overlap. Clients may not know which is the best agency to visit to get the assistance they need. Some of the agencies have staff to provide help, but many require the client to complete their forms on a computer and submit the data to their home office. Those forms are often rejected; maybe a field was left blank.

What does this mean for people in poverty? They may need to visit several offices, missing work. They may need to provide the same information repeatedly. They may need to find a computer with internet access, and then check back repeatedly to see if they have been processed. As their frustration level rises, they begin to be treated with less and less respect. The agency begins to see them as "the problem."

Agencies have created data silos. The information they gather is accessible only to their staff. Because of privacy laws they cannot share with other agencies. Therefore, the person needing help must tell their story, share their problems, over and over again. This is so stressful, they often give up.

Agencies create plans to help their clients. They need information from the client's application to identify the problem and decide which tools are most appropriate. But a person in poverty may end up with several agencies creating different plans, suggesting different tools to help them. The plans rarely ask for input from the person needing the services. And they rarely reach out to other agencies - the silo effect in action. Employees in these agencies don't see their role in the bigger picture.

Is there a good solution? We're working on it. Panhandle Partnership is an organization serving the eleven counties of the Panhandle. They do not provide services. Rather, they build collaboration among agencies, creating networks to find creative solutions to improve the quality of life and communities in the Panhandle. Panhandle Partnership was created in 1998, and is a key member of the Alliance Poverty Task Force.

Unite Nebraska is a new organization created in our state. They are a coordinated-care network of health and social service providers. Unite Nebraska has created a shared technology platform, which enables agencies to send and receive electronic referrals to address people's needs. Once a network partner identifies a person’s social needs, they can instantly send a secure electronic referral to the most appropriate network partner(s) for that specific service. Partners involved in that person’s care will have visibility into whether or not the referral is accepted and once accepted, whether or not that person received the services and what happened as a result.

These two organizations allow us to identify service gaps and identify at-risk populations. They don't solve all the problems of the silos created by having several different agencies addressing the needs of low-income people in Nebraska, but we are moving in the right direction.

SUTHERLAND, Neb.-Sutherland High School student Kylee Edwards was selected to represent Dawson Public Power District at the Nebraska Rural Electric Association Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. Edwards is the daughter of Aaron and Kate Edwards of North Platte.

Edwards and 20 other high school students spent one week in the nation’s capital touring popular historical sites. The students met with members of the Nebraska Congressional Delegation and joined other rural high school students from across America at the annual National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Youth Day. The event focused on political engagement, leadership and issues facing the electric industry today.&nbsp;

Upper Niobrara White NRD crop water use report, week of July 4

LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Nebraska State Troopers removed from the road 24 impaired drivers during the Independence Day weekend.

“As Nebraskans kept their eyes on the fireworks this weekend, troopers were busy keeping our roads safe,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As we continue into the second half of the year, we urge all motorists to be safe on the roads and always have a sober driver. Whether it’s a holiday weekend or not, every day is an occasion to drive safely.”

In addition to the 24 arrests for DUI, troopers issued citations for speeding (363), open alcohol container (31), driving under suspension (21), minor in possession (18), no proof of insurance (12), no seat belt (13), and improper child restraint (14). Troopers also assisted 254 motorists in need of help on the road.

The special enforcement effort ran from July 1 through July 5 and included troopers and dispatchers working throughout the state. This effort was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $17,700 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office. Throughout the enforcement period, troopers also assisted with traffic control around several community events.

The Class of ’62 is pleased to announce that the goal of having $100,000 in the Opportunities Grant fund has been reached. Donations of $10,000 each from the Barbara (Lawrence)Arnold/Henry Go family and the Rodney/Barbara Romig family were instrumental in the achievement of this goal.

“Our 60th class reunion was June 8th and 9th. Some thirty plus attended from all parts of the country. Since we’re aware of the reality that we’ll be fewer in five years, we thought it was important to create a sufficiently strong endowment such that an awareness of our lifelong affection for this community will continue longer than will we,” said Rod Romig and echoed by Barbara Arnold.

Over the past 14 years, nearly 40 students and recently, teachers, have been awarded grants ranging from $500 to $2000 to enhance their educational experience. The purpose of the grants is not to pay for tuition and college expenses but rather to fund supplemental educational experiences, such as attending a writers conference, studying in Greece, attending a band camp, traveling to Argentina to study cattle breeding, participating in a summer dance camp, studying at a university in England, etc.

“Our mission is not to fund anything specific but rather to fund opportunity,” Romig said.

AHS Class of ’62 announce donations to Opportunities Grant Fund

On July 3 at approximately 10:45 p.m. Scotts Bluff County deputies were called to a car vs. train accident at the L79E Link - Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad crossing in Minatare.

Deputies found a 2019 Jeep Cherokee, driven by 22-year-old Janet Spengler of Scottsbluff, that had been struck by an eastbound BNSF train.

Spengler’s Jeep had been stopped at the railroad crossing due to a passing train when the vehicle was rear ended by a 1989 Toyota pickup truck driven by 53-year-old David Bollman of rural Minatare.&nbsp; 

"The vehicle driven by Spengler was pushed into the side of the moving train," Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman said. "No injuries were reported by Spengler and her juvenile sister who was the passenger of the vehicle. Bollman sustained minor facial injuries due to not wearing a seatbelt."

David Bollman was arrested for driving under the influence (2nd&nbsp;offense), careless driving, open alcohol container and no seatbelt.

The Scotts Bluff Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Minatare Fire Department,&nbsp;Valley Ambulance and the Burlington Northern Railroad Police Department.

Deputies respond to car vs. train accident in Scotts Bluff County

CHADRON – Chadron State College Art professors Laura Bentz and Mary Donahue will exhibit black and white photographs and paintings, respectively, in “Quiet Witness of the High Plains” July 14 through Sept. 19 at Fred Simon Gallery in Omaha. The show is co-sponsored by the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. An opening reception will be July 14 from 5-7 p.m.

Bentz and Donahue, in their artists’ statement, say living in and responding to the landscape is an integral element in their lives. They say the endless skies, silent buttes, solitary trees, enduring rocks, undulating grasslands, twisted roots, rustling pines, and their corresponding forms, light, colors, shapes, and lines echo the voices of past human stories and struggles. The theme of the show is taken from the foreword of Lovesong to the Plains by Mari Sandoz, “…stories we could all hear so long as we kept silent.”

When describing the sounds of western Nebraska, Bentz said the wind is a major factor.

“The sound (wind) makes as it escalates from a murmur to a roar. The way the wind skims across the tall prairie grasses in the early summer or rustles through the dry cornstalks in the fall seems to be distant echoes of waves from prehistoric seaway that once covered the plains.&nbsp;Or, just before sunset, a settling breeze passes over the prairie; it seems to be the earth saying farewell to the day past,” Bentz said.

Donahue said she hears the wind through the trees and tall grasses, the call of meadowlarks, the screech of red tail hawks, and the wail of coyotes at night.

“These sounds connect me to the larger universe—that idea that looking at the stars makes one feel small but in a good way—that we belong to a continuum of life past, present, and future. It causes me to think about the life that traversed this land so many years ago—mammoths, bison, Native Americans, fur traders, early settlers, ranchers. I try to imagine what their everyday life was like, the details, and, yes, the sounds. Maybe those same sounds I am hearing now in the wind and the birds,” Donahue said.

Bentz said her photographs in the show are tangential to screen prints and mix media imagery she has developed.

Donahue’s work is landscape-based, though she said a few pieces may feel a bit abstract. Regarding how landscape inspires her work, Donahue said she is always marveling at landforms and horizons when driving, running, hiking, or biking.

“It’s a wonder I get to work on time because I see something in the sky and the hills and I want to stop to take a photo for future reference. The locations for most of my work are in northwest Nebraska, along the highways I am driving, along the ridges I hike or run. A few are from just over the border in South Dakota. I found I have a particular fascination for trees and roots. They seem to say ‘survival’ to me,” Donahue said.

Donahue also finds the seasons present interesting and beautiful colors, shapes, and lines.

“Winter creates stunning shadows and blues, our grasslands in the fall have as rich and wonderful colors as fall leaves in other places. And the light and color of our skies and clouds create magic any time of the day or year,” Donahue said.

About six years ago, Bentz began to photograph a field near her home.

“I wanted to document the field as a practice of observation; to watch the subtle, or not so subtle changes that occurred day-to-day and season-to-season.&nbsp;Gradually, over time this practice of observing and documenting expanded to include a radius of two miles from my home, then, to include areas like Toadstool Geological Park and the Metcalf Wildlife Management Area, and then, to include the larger Great Plains Region,” Bentz said.

The show came about after Donahue&nbsp;applied to the gallery’s call for artists in 2019, unaware Bentz had also applied. The gallery committee thought it would work well to have a combined show since both are keenly interested in the high plains landscape. Initially, the show was scheduled in 2021, but was postponed due to the pandemic.

 </figure>Bentz and Donahue, in their artists’ statement, say living in and responding to the landscape is an integral element in their lives. They say the endless skies, silent buttes, solitary trees, enduring rocks, undulating grasslands, twisted roots, rustling pines, and their corresponding forms, light, colors, shapes, and lines echo the voices of past human stories and struggles. The theme of the show is taken from the foreword of Lovesong to the Plains by Mari Sandoz, “…stories we could all hear so long as we kept silent.”When describing the sounds of western Nebraska, Bentz said the wind is a major factor.“The sound (wind) makes as it escalates from a murmur to a roar. The way the wind skims across the tall prairie grasses in the early summer or rustles through the dry cornstalks in the fall seems to be distant echoes of waves from prehistoric seaway that once covered the plains.&nbsp;Or, just before sunset, a settling breeze passes over the prairie; it seems to be the earth saying farewell to the day past,” Bentz said.Donahue said she hears the wind through the trees and tall grasses, the call of meadowlarks, the screech of red tail hawks, and the wail of coyotes at night.“These sounds connect me to the larger universe—that idea that looking at the stars makes one feel small but in a good way—that we belong to a continuum of life past, present, and future. It causes me to think about the life that traversed this land so many years ago—mammoths, bison, Native Americans, fur traders, early settlers, ranchers. I try to imagine what their everyday life was like, the details, and, yes, the sounds. Maybe those same sounds I am hearing now in the wind and the birds,” Donahue said.Bentz said her photographs in the show are tangential to screen prints and mix media imagery she has developed.Donahue’s work is landscape-based, though she said a few pieces may feel a bit abstract. Regarding how landscape inspires her work, Donahue said she is always marveling at landforms and horizons when driving, running, hiking, or biking.“It’s a wonder I get to work on time because I see something in the sky and the hills and I want to stop to take a photo for future reference. The locations for most of my work are in northwest Nebraska, along the highways I am driving, along the ridges I hike or run. A few are from just over the border in South Dakota. I found I have a particular fascination for trees and roots. They seem to say ‘survival’ to me,” Donahue said.Donahue also finds the seasons present interesting and beautiful colors, shapes, and lines.“Winter creates stunning shadows and blues, our grasslands in the fall have as rich and wonderful colors as fall leaves in other places. And the light and color of our skies and clouds create magic any time of the day or year,” Donahue said.About six years ago, Bentz began to photograph a field near her home.“I wanted to document the field as a practice of observation; to watch the subtle, or not so subtle changes that occurred day-to-day and season-to-season.&nbsp;Gradually, over time this practice of observing and documenting expanded to include a radius of two miles from my home, then, to include areas like Toadstool Geological Park and the Metcalf Wildlife Management Area, and then, to include the larger Great Plains Region,” Bentz said.The show came about after Donahue&nbsp;applied to the gallery’s call for artists in 2019, unaware Bentz had also applied. The gallery committee thought it would work well to have a combined show since both are keenly interested in the high plains landscape. Chadron professors featured in Omaha art show

In 1937, the Nebraska Safety Patrol was formed to address the rising problem of crashes on our state’s roads. &nbsp;Eighty-five years later, that organization still stands—now known as the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP). &nbsp;Their mission to help keep our communities and citizens safe hasn’t wavered. &nbsp;But they continue to adapt the ways they carry out that mission to meet the needs of Nebraskans. &nbsp;As we celebrate 85 years of the NSP, let’s recognize all they do for our state.&nbsp; They keep us safe on the roads, protect us from crime, stop online predators, and take dangerous drugs off our streets.

Many Nebraskans are familiar with the work the NSP does to keep our roads safe. &nbsp;In Nebraska, severe weather can come on suddenly.&nbsp; Blizzards, thunderstorms, and extreme winds create treacherous driving conditions with little warning.&nbsp; Every season of the year, our Troopers perform life-saving rescues of stranded motorists.&nbsp; NSP made 163 rescues during the historic floods of March 2019.&nbsp; Later that year, in July, NSP made over 100 additional rescues as rapidly rising floodwaters inundated Gibbon, Kearney, and Wood River.

State Troopers also secure our roadways by responding to traffic accidents. &nbsp;They help clear crash scenes quickly to avoid secondary accidents and to get traffic moving again.&nbsp; Troopers work to determine what caused an accident, and their findings help prevent future crashes.&nbsp;

In August 2021, the NSP launched an innovative drone program to improve how it manages crash sites and performs accident investigations.&nbsp; The drones capture aerial footage and take measurements from the sky, quickly gathering data needed for the investigation.&nbsp; By using the drones, NSP has reduced the time to investigate an accident from 2 ½ hours to just 45 minutes. &nbsp;This makes for a safer, more efficient response. &nbsp;Every minute saved at a crash site is a minute that motorists aren’t detouring around a crash and our first responders aren’t at risk standing on the roadside. &nbsp;&nbsp;

One of the most important duties our Troopers perform is responding to crimes in progress. &nbsp;Troopers are willing to risk their own safety to protect those in danger.&nbsp; In January, NSP received word from law enforcement in Indiana that an armed suspect and kidnapping victim were likely headed westbound on I-80 through Nebraska.&nbsp; A warrant had been issued for the driver’s arrest.&nbsp; Troopers located the vehicle near Grand Island and attempted a traffic stop.&nbsp; The driver crossed the median and tried to head back east on I-80.&nbsp; Troopers quickly made a tactical vehicle intervention to stop the fleeing pickup. &nbsp;An NSP SWAT team took the suspect into custody without incident, locating several firearms in the cab of the truck.&nbsp; They also rescued the kidnapped female passenger who reported that she had been handcuffed by the driver during the journey from Indiana to Nebraska.

In June, the State Patrol assisted Indiana law enforcement on another case to intercept a human trafficker passing through Nebraska. &nbsp;Indiana police notified NSP to be on the lookout for a missing 13-year old girl in a Ford F-150.&nbsp; Troopers located the vehicle near Kearney and made a traffic stop.&nbsp; They found the young girl hiding in the pickup and arrested the 20-year old driver.&nbsp; He was later charged with numerous crimes, including sexual trafficking of a child.

As more illegal activity moves online, NSP has also ramped up its efforts to fight cybercrime.&nbsp; In June 2019, the agency launched a Technical Crimes Division (TCD).&nbsp; It protects Nebraska’s state and business infrastructure, conducts child exploitation investigations, and provides forensic assistance to agencies throughout the state.&nbsp; TCD received more than 2,000 cyber tips in 2021, which it has used to successfully investigate cases of enticement and child pornography. &nbsp;

Just last month, NSP arrested a man from Roca for child enticement.&nbsp; He had used social media in an attempt to arrange a sexual encounter with a girl he believed was only 14 years old.&nbsp; In reality, the man had been in correspondence with an undercover NSP investigator.&nbsp; When he showed up expecting to meet her, he was arrested by NSP investigators.

Drug interdiction is another main focus of the State Patrol.&nbsp; The NSP works tirelessly to keep drugs off our streets and out of our communities.&nbsp; This is more important than ever as illicit drugs stream into America across our broken southern border.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2021, the NSP seized about 2 ½ times the amount of fentanyl as it did in 2020. &nbsp;The amount of cocaine seized by NSP more than tripled from 2020 to 2021.

Nebraska has the 2nd-lowest drug overdose mortality rate in the country according to the CDC.&nbsp; WalletHub ranks Nebraska as having the 4th-lowest “Drug Use and Addiction” in America. &nbsp;NSP deserves credit for contributing to these strong rankings through its vigilant drug interdiction.&nbsp;

Check out this 4.25"+ sized hail stone that was reported on a severe warned supercell thunderstorm 10 miles Southwest of Agate, Nebraska (Sioux County) around 6pm MDT this evening.

The supercell has been ongoing for approximately 4 hours! It started near Douglas, Wyoming at around 2pm MDT! Its tallest radar sampled cloud top heights have reached 60,000 FEET in the air today.

Softball size hail reported in Sioux County

The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department have responded to eight fires in the past six days.&nbsp;

"It’s been a very busy past six days for our crews," Chadron Volunteer Fire Department said. "We have responded to eight fires, not including EMS calls in between. Six out of the eight fire calls were firework related."

On Monday evening CVFD was called to a house fire a couple blocks north of Chadron State College.&nbsp;

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.&nbsp;

CVFD also battled a wildfire south of Highway 20, close to South Slim Buttes Road.&nbsp;

The wildfire was caused by lightening from a recent thunderstorm and burned close to two acres.&nbsp;

CVFD also were called to three dumpster fires, one debris fire, and two additional wild land fires.&nbsp;

"As we continue to dry out very quickly we ask for everyone to please be fire careful," Chadron Volunteer Fire Department said. "We have a chance of thunderstorms every night this week. Our neighboring towns have also been working multiple timber fires as well. Forest service, civil air, seat plane, city maintainer and senior active have all helped in assisting us. Flight detections will continue to fly through the week to help find smoke for us in the timber."

Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on July 9, 2022, in honor and remembrance of the victims.&nbsp;
