Thankfully no injuries are reported and traffic on Highway 30 is not impacted. 

Crews are working on clean-up at this time.

CHADRON – A recent North Platte Community Playhouse production of Clue, based on the board game of the same name about a murder at a mansion with several suspects, featured four alumni of Chadron State College. Actors included Staysha Adams (2014) as Mrs. Peacock, Lane Swedberg (2016) as Mr. Green, Chantel Burch (2014) as Mrs. White, and Jesse Young (2015) as Wadsworth, the butler.

Adams, an Elementary Education major, has a long history of theatrical involvement and participated in many CSC productions both on stage and behind the scenes from 2011 to 2014. She said the Theatre faculty worked hard to ensure the students were well-rounded in all areas.

“When I got to CSC, Roger (Mays) and Scott (Cavin) opened my eyes to so many new ways of performing and building a show,” Adams said.

The skills she built at CSC helped her succeed as a director of high school one-act plays and as company manager at Theatre West in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. She has also found applications in her current role as an elementary special education teacher in North Platte.

Swedberg, a Middle Grades Math and Science Education major, acted in several CSC productions but focused mainly on studying Music. He continues to use his musical and acting background with community theatre. He has been involved in the North Platte Community Theatre for six years and played trumpet, flugelhorn, and piccolo trumpet. He has played in the pit band for six shows and acted in six more.

Swedberg felt a personal connection to his character from playing Clue as a child.

“When I played the board game growing up, I would pick my game piece solely off of their color, blue and green being my favorites, so it is very fitting that I got to play the part of Mr. Green,” Swedberg said.

Young, a Justice Studies major, recognized his fellow CSC alumni right away when he auditioned at the end of February.

“I saw Chantel during auditions and thought, ‘I know her … I think I went to college with her,’” he said.

Burch, a Communication major, said she has enjoyed reviving old stories with her fellow CSC alumni.

“I’m so grateful we could reconnect and get to know each other better. I feel like I have a new group of old friends,” Burch said.

Adams agreed it has been a good opportunity for CSC alumni to reconnect.

“This cast is made up of a very fun, very talented group of people, and there is never a dull moment,” Adams said.

City of Alliance to perform power pole testing 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man was sentenced to 70 years to life in prison Wednesday for the shooting death of a police officer in 2020.

Felipe Vazquez, now 19, shot Officer Mario Herrera when he tried to escape from police who were serving an arrest warrant for him at his Lincoln home. Vazquez was wanted in the stabbing death of 36-year-old Edward Varejcka months earlier.

Vazquez was sentenced to another 59 to 86 years for attempted assault on a second officer, escape and four gun charges, the Lincoln Star&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/man-who-shot-lincoln-officer-sentenced-to-70-years-to-life-in-prison-for-murder/article_97491141-1420-541a-8f54-e5a3422c19f5.html#tncms-source=login" target="_blank">reported</a>. He will not be eligible for parole for about 70 years.

Vazquez&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/crime-shootings-arrests-homicide-nebraska-0bb32f2ce0c6e2465eb646045590c74f">was convicted</a>&nbsp;in March.

Herrera, a 23-year-veteran of the Lincoln police department, was shot as Vasquez and another man jumped out of a window and fired at officers in an effort to escape.

Herrera, who was wearing plain clothes and had no bulletproof vest, was at the scene, in part, as a translator. He was struck in the torso and underwent several surgeries before dying on Sept. 7, 2020.

He was the first Lincoln police officer killed in the line of duty in more than 50 years.

THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. —&nbsp;Hot Springs Health, a Thermopolis, Wyo., hub for healthcare in the Big Horn Basin, first opened its doors in 1958. HSH currently has a hospital, four family practice clinics, and a surgical clinic.

The board of directors has announced the appointment of Scott Alwin as the new CEO of Hot Springs Health. His tenure begins on July 1, when he will take over for Margie Molitor.

HealthTech Staffing, a Brentwood, Tennessee-based healthcare consulting and management firm helped direct the search for the “right candidate.”

Alwin’s 20 years of experience in the healthcare field include time spent in administrative and clinical settings. He plans to introduce more stabilization, team building, and cost efficiency to the job.

“This is an exciting time for everyone at HSH. After an exhaustive, nationwide search for a talented CEO for our growing organization, we’re very pleased to find that our most qualified candidate was in house,” Bill Williams DVM, board chairman, said. “Everyone knows Scott, and he knows the ins and outs, the top and bottom of our hospital system. I’m confident he’ll hit all our targets in the near future. I also want to say that Margie Molitor did a superb job these last six years. Previously, Alwin served as the Chief Clinical Officer for the hospital, he held that position until 2021. Originally from northwest Kansas, Alwin earned his Master of Science, Health Services Administration from Regis University, his Master of Science, Physical Education from Des Moines University and his Bachelor of Science, General Science from Fort Hays State University.

Alwin previously served in a variety of roles at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, Neb., for 16 years, as well as stints at Regional West Health Services in Scottsbluff and Gering, Neb.

Former Alliance health care professional named WY hospital CEO

A man sought in a Scottsbluff shooting death of a&nbsp;63-year-old woman remains at large.&nbsp;

The Scottsbluff Police Department has obtained an arrest warrant for 38-year-old Davin Darayle Saunders.&nbsp;

The arrest warrant is for the following charges:

-1 Count of Murder in the Second Degree; Class 1B Felony

-1 Count of Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person; Class 1D Felony

-1 Count Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony; Class 1C Felony

Saunders is described as a black male, 5’11”, 190-200 lbs., brown eyes, black hair.

Saunders has numerous tattoos. His tattoos include tattoos on both inner forearms, a script across his upper chest, a script on the right side of the neck that has a star at the beginning and at the end of the text, and a flaming skull tattoo above the navel.

"Information was developed by investigators that Saunders was last in Cheyenne, Wyoming during the evening hours of May 24," Scottsbluff Police Captain Lance Kite said. "It was also reported that he had left the area of the Cheyenne Wal-Mart on foot."

The Cheyenne Police Department assisted the Scottsbluff Police Department in investigating this lead.

"Saunders has an extensive history of violence and should be considered armed and dangerous," Kite said. "Please contact local law enforcement should you see Saunders."

The 63-year-old woman has been identified&nbsp;Karen Cooper.&nbsp;

UPDATE: Suspect remains at large following Scottsbluff shooting death

LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;—&nbsp; A dozen Nebraska State Troopers have been recognized for their efforts to keep Nebraska roads safe through impaired driving enforcement and education.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) presented Hero Awards to the 12 troopers, as well as officers, deputies, and advocates from several other agencies and organizations around the state. The annual MADD Heroes Award ceremony was held Tuesday at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln. MADD honors law enforcement and public safety advocates for their work to keep drunk or drugged drivers off Nebraska roadways.

“Enforcement and education are two keys to keeping Nebraska roads safe for all,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We’re tremendously proud of our troopers and our public safety partners for their efforts to combat impaired driving. MADD is a fantastic partner in that mission, and we salute their work across the state to highlight the critical importance of always having a sober driver.”

In 2021, NSP troopers arrested nearly 1,200 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. So far in 2022, troopers have made more than 350 DUI arrests. Troopers also conduct hundreds of events across the state each year to educate Nebraska’s youth about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Poverty is a lack of resources. People in poverty are often in survival mode, driven by the tyranny of the moment, where they cannot plan for the future. Their problems are often crises that must be dealt with today.

People in poverty are forced to decide which is their most immediate problem: Do they pay rent or their utility bill? Do they pay for medicine or groceries? What can they let slide for another week or month?

It is especially difficult for those with a chronic illness. How do they maintain a place to live, get to appointments, and afford medications and treatments? Can they even hold down a job?

Think about what it means to rent. Many places require a two-month security deposit, along with the first month's rent. (And really, do they ever give the whole deposit back?) Utility companies also want a deposit. Where you can rent may depend on your transportation needs. And rent has been skyrocketing across America in the last two years. What is the alternative? Extended stay motel? Friend's sofa? Car? Homelessness?

The support systems those of us in the middle class take for granted are often non-existent for those in poverty. Yes, the taxes we pay offer many of the services needed by those in poverty.

But those services challenge people in poverty by throwing up barriers at every turn. How does a single parent get to work at a minimum wage job without transportation or dependable child care? Can they get any benefits if businesses are only hiring for part-time openings? Do they need to get two or three jobs to pay bills? How can they take off work to go to parent-teacher conferences, or visit food pantries, or sign up for assistance that requires using a computer, or visit an office that is only open during normal working hours? The system is not easy to navigate!

Poverty is at the heart of poor health, unaffordable housing, transportation challenges, homelessness, low-wage jobs, poor nutrition and hunger, lack of education, and unaffordable child care.

People are often thrown into situational poverty by circumstances. How many of us wouldn't have a major financial setback if something truly bad happened to us? Something like a job loss, a serious illness (theirs or someone in their family), divorce, death, accident, or a catastrophe destroying their home. A January survey by Bankrate found that 56% of Americans had not saved enough money to cover a $1,000 emergency expense. How long could we last before our credit cards were maxed out, utilities were cut off, we were evicted, or our home was foreclosed?

Those in situational poverty hopefully have the skills needed to work themselves out of the hole. They often have support systems of family and friends. They can figure out how to navigate the system and get the help they need.

More discouraging are the problems faced by those in generational poverty. These are families who have experienced poverty for two generations or longer. They feel like they have no choices and no power. Not only do they lack money, they don't have education and connections that people in other classes rely on. They don't have the resources to pack up and move to an area with better opportunities. These families are trapped in a cycle of poverty unless there is outside intervention.

How does a family get out of the downward spiral?

These questions and problems are the reason the Alliance Poverty Task Force was formed. Alliance, and all of rural America, isn't as prosperous as it was forty or fifty years ago. This is the reason we are bringing Bridges Out of Poverty programs to our area.

Through Bridges Out of Poverty, we hope to learn how to affect real change. We want to create public and private partnerships with our agencies and organizations, to collaborate to find solutions.

Alliance Highway 2, 3rd Street Bridge repairs to start soon

On May 24 at approximately at 3:29 p.m. Scottsbluff police officers were called to the 900 block of 15th&nbsp;Avenue involving a stabbing. 

Officers found a 29-year-old female who sustained a laceration to her right arm. 

"Once the scene was made secure Scottsbluff Fire Department and Valley Ambulance Service attended to the victim," Sergeant Tyler Fliam said. "A 13-year-old suspect was taken into custody nearby without incident."

Each year, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Nebraska hosts an awards banquet to recognize law enforcement officers across the state for their efforts in removing impaired drivers from our roadways.  Only a select few law enforcement officers in our state receive the time-honored MADD Award for their efforts.

Yesterday, Sergeant Stefan Yocum received a MADD Award for his efforts in impaired driving enforcement in Alliance.&nbsp;

We appreciate and commend Sergeant Yocum for his dedication to keeping Alliance’s roadways safe from impaired drivers.

If you anticipate you will not be able to return in this time period and would like your arrangement saved for an additional seven days (ten days total following Memorial Day), flower tags will be available at the Greenwood Cemetery sexton’s building. You may write your name on the back of the tag and attach it to your arrangement. All arrangements with tags will be stored alongside the shop building for one week for you to pick up.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.-A manhunt is underway for the suspect in a fatal shooting in Scottsbluff.

Scottsbluff police said the shooting happened at around 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers responded to the 1700 block of Avenue Z, where they found a 60-year-old woman who had been shot. Officers and medical personnel attempted to perform life-saving measures but were unable to.

Police have identified a relative of the woman, Davin Darayle Saunders, 38, as the suspect and a manhunt is currently underway.

Saunders is described as an African-American male, 5'11", weighing 205 pounds. Police said Saunders should be considered armed and dangerous. He was reportedly driving a gold Chevrolet Impala which police have recovered.

Anyone with information on Saunders' whereabouts is encouraged to contact&nbsp;Scottsbluff police at (308) 632 7176.

Manhunt underway for suspect in fatal Scottsbluff shooting

At the May 16 Chadron City Council meeting, the council approved a resolution for the Chadron Parks Foundation for solar lights to be installed in Wilson Park.

"We have a number of those lights in Memorial Park already, they've been performing well, and providing a very nice ambient light there during the night time hours," Chadron City Manager John Sutherland said. "We're going to do a similar installation in Wilson Park."

Sutherland said the City of Chadron will be using community development funds to install the solar lights.

One of the many benefits of installing the lights will be to help with vandalism.

"It also assists a little bit with vandalism and it helps minimize anything that might be going on out there in the park late at night," Sutherland said. "Maybe some things that the dark of night would otherwise disguise; now we'll have the daylight out there provided by solar lighting."

Sutherland said the city parks have had a "disappointing amount of vandalism."

"We've made some new installations out there with very nice picnic tables, and those were destroyed," Sutherland said. "We bought replacements and put those in...and a couple of those were likewise destroyed. It's just a darn shame that we have bad actors in the community who insist on damaging things."

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A Pine Ridge man, accused in a shooting that left the victim partially paralyzed, has been found guilty of eight federal charges.

 The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 30-year-old Isaac Roubideaux was convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and six other charges. 

Roubideaux was indicted by a federal grand jury in December. 

The assault and firearms charges relate to Roubideaux shooting another man in the back on Nov. 18, 2021, resulting in the victim suffering permanent paralysis below his waistline. 

The defendant was turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Alliance – The City of Alliance Facilities will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. This closure includes the Utility Office, Senior Center, and the Municipal Building.

The Public Works Building will be closed Friday, May 27 thru Monday, May 30 with on-call employees available for emergencies.

Public Transit will be available for medical rides only on Monday, May 30th.

The Alliance Municipal Landfill and the Alliance Public Library, will also be closed Saturday May 28 and Monday, May 30 for the holiday weekend.
