Governor Pete Ricketts and First Lady Susanne Shore revealed the design of the next general issue Nebraska license plate. &nbsp;The design is a mosaic pattern depicting the Genius of Creative Energy and is based on artwork inside the Nebraska Capitol Building.

The original “Genius of Creative Energy” mosaic kicks off a series of mosaics around the Nebraska Capitol, all working together to relate the State’s history to the ideals of Western Civilization. &nbsp;Designed by world-renowned artist Hildreth Meiere in 1927, the Genius brandishes a lightning bolt in his right hand and is propelled across the sky by harnessing the power of the four elements.

The license plate design pays homage to this Genius and all the mosaics in the Nebraska Capitol depicting Nebraskans’ shared story. &nbsp;It was designed by Nebraska-based brand and design consultant Drew Davies. &nbsp;“I'm deeply honored to have the opportunity to design a license plate celebrating the creative energy of all Nebraskans," Davies shared.

“I want to thank the countless Nebraskans who have come to us with ideas and feedback over the years,” said First Lady Susanne Shore. &nbsp;“Ultimately, we found a design that every Nebraskan can relate to. &nbsp;I especially want to thank Drew for unleashing his creative genius to depict our state’s own.”

A new license plate is designed and implemented every six years, as is required by Nebraska law. &nbsp;Production of the plates is underway, with distribution to begin in January 2023. &nbsp;Owners of vehicles with a standard issue license plate will receive new plates from their county treasurer in the month the vehicle registration expires.&nbsp; This currently amounts to approximately 1.3 million vehicles statewide.&nbsp;

Saturday, June 4, from 9:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. the 500 block of Bordeaux St. will be closed during the preparation and implementation of the Summer Reading Program Kick-off. The kick-off event will take place from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. There will be games for everyone, a bit of music and food (until supplies last). A tiny beach will be provided for those desirous to play with the sand.

Participants can wear costumes related to the Ocean theme or their swimming suits if they so desire.

The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department and the Chadron Police Department will be present with some of their equipment.

Oceans of Possibilities is the theme of this year Summer Reading Program. Every Summer, the Chadron Public Library offers a reading contests to young patrons (ages 6 months to 18 years old). Helping children to retain reading skills during the summer months is the goal of the Summer Reading Program.

This year, the Program will span from June 4 to July 16. Preregistration will be June 4. First 50 individuals to sign up will receive a t-shirt. The official registration will continue from June 6 to the end of the program: July 16. Participants will be able to garner weekly prizes based on the amount of reading done. There will be a final award event with prizes for all readers.

During the Summer Reading Program, the library will offer weekly events for different age levels. See the schedule below:

“On Memorial Day, we honor the brave Americans who have given their lives in service to our nation.&nbsp; For nearly 250 years, our Republic has been defended by brave women and men who have answered the call of duty in times of war.&nbsp; Many have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we hold dear. &nbsp;The liberties we enjoy wouldn’t be possible without their heroism.”

“This Monday, I encourage all Nebraskans to remember our fallen heroes and to give thanks for their patriotic devotion.&nbsp; Together, let’s commit to carrying on their legacy by selflessly serving our communities.”

“Susanne, the kids, and I wish everyone an enjoyable holiday weekend.&nbsp; If you’re traveling, please buckle up, slow down for construction zones, and drive safely.”

 The secretary of state on Wednesday validated the initiated measure for the November ballot. 

Secretary of State Steve Barnett announced that a random sample of petition signatures showed that South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws, the group campaigning to legalize pot, had easily collected enough valid signatures to surpass the roughly 17,000 needed to place the initiated measure on the November ballot.

On Saturday, May 28 at approximately 12:30 p.m. members of the Cheyenne Police Laramie County Joint SWAT Team were involved in an incident that resulted in a use of force action with homicide suspect, Davin Darayle Saunders, near the 2500 block of East 11th Street.

On Tuesday, May 24 the Cheyenne Police Department received a report that Saunders was in Cheyenne. Further investigation revealed Saunders was located at a residence near the 2500 block of East 11th Street. The CPD’s joint SWAT team was notified and responded to the area to conduct surveillance. 

A warrant was issued for officers to enter the residence. While on scene, the SWAT team attempted to communicate with Saunders, asking him to exit the residence, but he refused. Officers deployed gas in an attempt to safely lure Saunders out of the home, but he pulled a firearm and officers fired on Saunders killing him. No further injuries were reported.

Saunders was wanted out of Scottsbluff, Nebraska for multiple homicide related charges. He had a history of violence, and was considered armed and dangerous.

The scene is still active and has been turned over to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.&nbsp;

Scottsbluff homicide suspect shot dead in Wyoming 

OMAHA, NE (May 24,2022) -&nbsp;&nbsp;AAA will be working to keep impaired drivers off the road for Memorial Day weekend. The Auto Club Group is reactivating its Tow to Go program for the holiday period, providing safe transportation for impaired drivers and their vehicles.

AAA Tow to Go has&nbsp;removed more than 25,000 impaired drivers from the road. When called, a tow truck transports the would-be impaired driver and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10 mile radius.&nbsp;The service is free, yet AAA asks that it be treated as a backup plan.

Approximately one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 28 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes every day – that’s one person every 52 minutes.

As Nebraska’s state parks prepare for another summer season, some are adjusting their activity hours because of a limited workforce. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission urges park-goers to call ahead before visiting a park to check on activity times and availability.

Game and Parks annually hires nearly 900 workers across the state to assist with a variety of state park operations during the summer. So far this season, at some larger park operations, there are only about half the needed staff to operate some activities.

“We appreciate everyone’s support and patience as we make the necessary changes to adapt to the current staffing challenges,” Parks Division Administrator Jeff Fields said. “We will do our best to still provide many excellent recreational opportunities that people expect in their parks.”

Platte River State Park – Starting May 28, the hours of operation at the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p. m. Stations available on those days may be limited depending on staffing.

In addition to reduced pool and shooting range hours at these parks, other activities and amenities that will have reduced hours include marinas, craft centers, golf shack, and activity centers. Call the park office in advance for more information.

Some state park area hours of operation reduced heading into summer

THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. —&nbsp;Hot Springs Health, a Thermopolis, Wyo., hub for healthcare in the Big Horn Basin, first opened its doors in 1958. HSH currently has a hospital, four family practice clinics, and a surgical clinic.

The board of directors has announced the appointment of Scott Alwin as the new CEO of Hot Springs Health. His tenure begins on July 1, when he will take over for Margie Molitor.

HealthTech Staffing, a Brentwood, Tennessee-based healthcare consulting and management firm helped direct the search for the “right candidate.”

Alwin’s 20 years of experience in the healthcare field include time spent in administrative and clinical settings. He plans to introduce more stabilization, team building, and cost efficiency to the job.

“This is an exciting time for everyone at HSH. After an exhaustive, nationwide search for a talented CEO for our growing organization, we’re very pleased to find that our most qualified candidate was in house,” Bill Williams DVM, board chairman, said. “Everyone knows Scott, and he knows the ins and outs, the top and bottom of our hospital system. I’m confident he’ll hit all our targets in the near future. I also want to say that Margie Molitor did a superb job these last six years. We’re all very happy with the work she’s done to get us this far and wish her the best of luck,” Williams remarks.

Previously, Alwin served as the Chief Clinical Officer for the hospital, he held that position until 2021. As CCO, Alwin directed the planning and coordination of all clinical services: Nursing Services, Cardiopulmonary, Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging, Pharmarcy, Ambulatory, Surgical Services, Nutrition/Food Services, Care Coordination/Utilization Review and Quality and Clinical Informatics.

Originally from northwest Kansas, the Colby native earned his Master of Science, Health Services Administration from Regis University, his Master of Science, Physical Therapy from Des Moines University and his Bachelor of Science, General Science from Fort Hays State University.

Alwin previously served in a variety of roles at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, Neb., for 16 years, as well as stints at Regional West Health Services in Scottsbluff and Gering, Neb.

“My family and I are thrilled to have this opportunity come up at the place that I’ve called home. It’s been a trying time these past couple years with the pandemic, and I couldn’t be happier to set down roots here at Hot Springs Health,” Alwin said. “The staff and even the patients I’ve had the pleasure of working with have all been extremely kind and welcoming.”

United States Attorney Jan Sharp announced that Shannon Rojas, 42, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, was sentenced today in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for distribution of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.&nbsp; Senior United States District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon sentenced Rojas to 70 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp; After her release from prison, she will begin a 4-year term of supervised release.

From October 2020 through November 2020, the WING Task Force utilized a confidential informant (CI), who purchased a total of five ounces from Rojas in Scottsbluff.&nbsp; The buys took place on October 26, 2020: CI purchased 58 grams for $1,200; October 27, 2020: CI purchased 28 grams for $1,000; and November 5, 2020: CI purchased 57 grams for $1,200.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This case was investigated by the WING (Western Nebraska Intelligence Narcotics Group), which is made up of the Nebraska State Patrol, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff Police Department, and the Sidney Police Department.&nbsp; Kearney Police Department was also involved in this investigation as was the&nbsp;&nbsp; CNDSSTF (Central Nebraska Drug and Safe Streets Task Force).&nbsp; CNDSSTF consists of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Grand Island Police Department, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, and the Nebraska State Patrol.&nbsp;

This effort is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation. OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach. ALLIANCE —Know Your Force announced today their partnership with Alliance Police Department to advance community relations by using a streamlined community survey sys-tem. Know Your Force helps police departments gather continuous feedback data from their community, enabling deeper insights into citizen voices and up-to-date information about their officers on an ongoing basis. 

“It is a great opportunity for our police department and community to team with Know Your Force. When someone has an interaction with one of our police officers, they are given a business card. Each officer’s business card has a specific QR-code. Scanning the QR-code allows individuals to complete a survey and give instant feedback on the interaction.” – Alliance Police Lieutenant Cody Buskirk. 

This announcement showcases a joint commitment to transparent communication. It reduces the friction typically associated with community-survey programs by leveraging On-the-Stop surveys, where feedback is received the moment an interaction occurs. Know Your Force’s mission is to bridge the gap in communication and transparency through modern technology. The Know Your Force survey system enables police departments to access and evaluate citizen feedback to help build trust and improve transparency between police and their communities.

'Fin-tastic' events scheduled at the Alliance Public Library

On May 14 Chadron Police Sgt. Stolley and Officer Deines were dispatched to a domestic disturbance located at 1250 west Highway 20 in Chadron. 

The officers arrived on scene and learned a male and a female had been in a physical altercation, but both had fled the area prior to their arrival.

 Sgt. Stolley and Officer Deines were able to identify the male and female involved from surveillance video in the area and witness statements.

 They began a search for the two subjects, but were unable to locate either one of them. 

On May 15 Sgt. Stolley located the female involved in the altercation and conducted an interview with her.

The investigation continued and officers of the Chadron Police Department attempted to located the male subject, but were not successful. 

On May 25 Investigator Bryner observed the male subject walking near the 800 block of West Highway 20. Bryner contacted officer Deines and Sgt. Stolley.&nbsp;

"The two officers responded to the area and contacted the male inside a local business," Chadron Police Chief Rick Hickstein said. "The male provided the two officers his statement as to what had happened on May 14. Officer Deines informed the male he was going to place him under arrest for domestic assault. The male turned away from Officer Deines and attempted to flee the scene. Officer Deines and Sgt. Stolley stopped the male from fleeing, but the male continued to resist, not allowing the officers to place him into custody. During the struggle to get the male under control, Sgt. Stolley utilized her taser to gain control of his arms and placed him into custody. Upon gaining control, Officer Deines and Sgt. Stolley located suspected methamphetamine and several tablets of prescription style pills on his person."

The Chadron rescue unit was called to the scene to supply medical treatment for the male. The man was denied transport.&nbsp;

Officer Deines and Sgt. Stolley then transported the male to the Chadron Community Hospital for medical clearance prior to transporting him to the Dawes County Jail.

45-year old Kenneth Kersey was placed under arrest for Felony Domestic Assault, Assault by Strangulation, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession with the Intent to Deliver, Obstruction of a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest. 

Kersey's bond was set at 10% of $50,000.00.

The Chadron Police Department was assisted by the Dawes County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol and the Chadron Fire Department.

NCAP to offer mental health services for Box Butte County residents

The Scotts Bluff County Health Department has received confirmation of a positive case of rabies in a skunk in the county. The skunk had an encounter with a family owned dog. The dog was up to date on its rabies vaccinations, received a rabies booster within 48 hours, and is under observation. This is the first positive case of rabies in an animal in the county in over three years.

This incident is a reminder that rabies can be present in wild animals and bats in the area. Rabies is caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system and is lethal if proper medical care is not given following an exposure to the virus.

The most common source of exposure to rabies is a bite by a rabid animal. Rabies may also be transmitted if saliva from a rabid animal comes into contact with an open wound, the mouth, eyes or nose. Everyone should take common sense measures to protect themselves and their domestic animals from rabies. Pet owners should keep their pets up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.

Additional steps that can be taken to prevent rabies in people and pets include:

· Do not feed stray animals. Avoid wild animals, especially raccoons, bats, foxes and skunks. Feed your pets indoors and do not let them wander.

· Teach children to avoid contact with wild animals and pets they are not familiar with.

· Do not handle sick, injured or dead animals. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabber if you have concerns about sick or injured wildlife.

· Keep wild animals out of homes by capping chimneys with screens and blocking openings in attics, cellars and porches. Ensure trash cans have tight fitting lids.

· Do not try to trap or handle stray and wild animals. If a bat is found indoors and may have had contact with someone, do not release it. Call your local animal control officer or veterinarian to determine if the animal should be picked up and tested for rabies.

If you are bitten by a wild or stray animal do not panic. Wash the wound(s) thoroughly with warm soapy water and contact your health care provider.. For further information, contact Scotts Bluff County Health Department at 308-436-6636.

Positive rabies case found in Scotts Bluff Co. animal 

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — About 400 workers at Planned Parenthood offices in five Midwestern states plan to unionize. 

The move comes as their employer deals with the potential loss of business in states where abortions may become illegal if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. 

Ashley Schmidt is a training and development specialist for Nebraska and western Iowa. 

She says workers at Planned Parenthood North Central States in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota formally filed for a union election with a National Labor Relations Board on Thursday. 

The workers plan to join SEIU Healthcare Minnesota &amp; Iowa, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, which represents Planned Parenthood workers in other states.
