The Commission received a total of 88 applications this grant cycle requesting $1,450,200.61 in funding. “The grant programs are designed to encourage communities in all corners of the state to market their destination or event to potential visitors. North Platte's Golden Spike Tower, Visit North Platte receive Neb. Tourism grants

HEBRON, NEB.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol and Thayer County Sheriff’s Office have identified the source of a threat made against Thayer Central Community Schools in Hebron.

Out of an abundance of caution, the school has been closed this week during the investigation. The threat of a potential school shooting was made against the school via social media on Friday afternoon. Investigators with the NSP Tech Crimes Unit have determined the source of the threat and have identified a suspect. That suspect is located in New Mexico and NSP is now working with authorities in New Mexico on this case.

NSP and the Thayer County Sheriff’s Office have been in constant communication with the school throughout the investigation and have notified school officials that there is no threat to the school. Further information will be released when possible. The investigation remains ongoing.

NSP Tech Crimes determines no threat to Thayer Central Schools

This week our road trip is going to Broadwater, Nebraska. We will be visiting the Art Barn. 

Here we will find artist, and Bob Ross instructor, Rachelle Eversole.

I first attended a class of hers at the college [WNCC] in Scottsbluff. I told her I had no talent. She assured me that she would help me, and show me every step along the way. It was amazing! So, now I was hooked, next I attended a class in Broadwater at the Starr Street Diner. Another awesome class, beautiful picture, and lunch was awesome. We all had burgers that were fantastic.

Now I couldn't wait for the next class, she came to Alliance, and held a class at the Eagles club to help raise money for the Pillars. She also has classes in Scottsbluff at the Hobby Lobby store. But, to tell you the truth, I most enjoy the small classes in her Art Barn. She can take up to six people and its very cozy and fun. 

All of our pictures were just beautiful. And, Rachelle is the nicest, most fun person I have ever met.

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Theatre department opens its 2023 spring season with Working, a musical adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso from Studs Terkel's best-selling book of interviews with American workers.

Public performances in Memorial Hall’s Black Box Theatre will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 16-17 and 24-25, with a 2 p.m. matinee Feb. 19. Admission is free, but&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/academics/theatre/seatreservation/" target="_blank">seat reservations</a>&nbsp;are recommended. According to the Music Theatre International website, Working paints a vivid portrait of the workers that the world so often takes for granted: the schoolteacher, the phone operator, the waitress, the millworker, the mason, and the housewife, among others.

Zackary Wellnitz of Rushville, Nebraska, cast as Man 3, said portraying real-life characters is different than fictional characters.

“The most challenging part of Working for me is the fact that the characters you see on stage are actual people. Every character is based off a real person. As an actor, I like to hide myself behind a fun, extrinsic character, but with this show I have to show the audience your average 9-5 worker,” Wellnitz said.

Levi O’Dell of Chadron, playing Man 2, highlighted the amount of work each of the actors put into the performance.

“There are very few scenes with back-and-forth dialogue, which means we all have quite a few monologues and long works of the text to memorize. We also all have two solo songs that we have to prepare on top of the harmonies for any of the other songs we are singing,” he said.

Sound Designer Trista Topil mentioned how creating the sound effects for the musical has stretched her skills.

“What&nbsp;I find the most challenging is to find the correct sounds for the cues, but also coming up with new ideas that fit the direction of the musical,” Topil said.

O’Dell also shared how the variety of characters impacted his views of others’ work and his own future career.

“I hope the audience watches this show and realizes that everyone’s perspective on work is different and it should all be valued,” he said. “Hearing about some people who love what they do, even if it seems small, makes me hopeful for my future.”

Wellnitz said he hopes the musical will help audience members realize their lives have meaning.

“The whole point behind Working is that even if you work a lousy 9-5 job, you still exist. It may not feel like that some days, but the truth is we are all people at the end of the day,” Wellnitz said.

He said the show gave him a deeper respect for people in the working world and his own parents.

“I now have this appreciation not only for every day working-class people, but also a great appreciation for my parents. So many of our parents have given up their hopes and dreams so their kids can live theirs,” Wellnitz said.

CSC Theatre presents ‘Working’ in February

Scottsbluff – United Way of Western Nebraska is excited to announce that grant applications are currently being accepted from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations for 2023-2024 United Way funding. Fund your good work in the community through a United Way community grant. Applications are available online at www.uwwn.org/grant. United Way work focuses on identifying the issues impacting the community in the areas of health, education, and financial stability. Services provided by the organizations must promote healthier lives, better education or financial stability, provide for and contribute primarily to human care and health needs operating and serving individuals in health, welfare, recreation, youth-guidance and/or character-building field.

Funds for the United Way of Western Nebraska grants are raised in the local community during the annual United Way fundraising campaign and through United Way special events. Agencies that apply and meet the funding criteria will be interviewed by a group of United Way volunteers that determine funding levels for each agency. Agencies seeking funding from the United Way of Western Nebraska main office will be interviewed on Thursday May 11 and Friday, May 12 in Scottsbluff, Dawes County interviews for funding will be held on Monday, May 8 in Chadron and Box Butte County interviews will be held on Thursday May 4 in Alliance. The amount of funding available is based on the final amount raised at the end of the United Way campaign.

United Way of Western Nebraska serves 11 counties in the Nebraska Panhandle and Platte County and Goshen County, Wyoming. The money raised in each area is available for agency funding in that county or service area. For instance, Scotts Bluff County area funds raised are granted to Scotts Bluff area nonprofits, Box Butte County funds raised are granted to Box Butte County agencies and Dawes County funds are given to Dawes County non-profits that apply for and are granted United Way funding.

Applications open for United Way of Western Nebraska grants 

A few facts about maintaining the city streets. City crews maintain 183 lane-miles of streets, providing sweeping, moving snow and general maintenance.

The following equipment is used to remove snow:

2. One wheel loader (makes openings in windrow to allow traffic flow and pushes piles created by paddle scrapers) 

6. The landfill assists with their paddle scraper

7. Contractor assists with paddle scraper

8. Water department assists with a backhoe

Why are some streets cleared better than others?

Different equipment clears snow and ice differently than others. Road graders have cutting edges that can get under the packed snow and ice to clear the streets to pavement. Truck plows push snow off the roadway, but run across packed snow and ice. 

Why does it take so long to clear the streets of snow and ice?

There are several answers to this question.

1. Equipment used to remove snow and ice must be driven at low speeds.

2. The amount of accumulation is also a factor. Larger accumulations means longer clearing time.

3. Emergency Snow Routes are given priority over all other streets and may need to be cleared more than once.

4. Weather conditions such as high winds and drifting cause longer clearing times.

5. Traffic volume also affects clearing times. 

Ideally, snow removal would take place at night when traffic volumes are low, however this is dependent on when the snow starts and stops.

One road grader 4. One skid steer5. One pickup with plow6. The landfill assists with their paddle scraper7. Contractor assists with paddle scraper8. Water department assists with a backhoeWhy are some streets cleared better than others?Different equipment clears snow and ice differently than others. Road graders have cutting edges that can get under the packed snow and ice to clear the streets to pavement. Truck plows push snow off the roadway, but run across packed snow and ice. Why does it take so long to clear the streets of snow and ice?There are several answers to this question.1. Equipment used to remove snow and ice must be driven at low speeds.2. The amount of accumulation is also a factor. Larger accumulations means longer clearing time.3. Emergency Snow Routes are given priority over all other streets and may need to be cleared more than once.4. Weather conditions such as high winds and drifting cause longer clearing times.5. Traffic volume also affects clearing times. Ideally, snow removal would take place at night when traffic volumes are low, however this is dependent on when the snow starts and stops. Area students named to Dean's List at Univ. of Neb. Medical Center

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp; — Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested an employee of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) following an investigation into a reported sexual assault of a co-worker.

The investigation began when State Patrol investigators received a report from NDCS. The reported assault had occurred at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution in October 2022.

Monday, investigators arrested James Cherry, 33, at his home in Humboldt for first-degree sexual assault and third-degree sexual assault. Cherry has been lodged in Johnson County Jail.

Winter Adventures Art Camp is underway at the Carnegie Arts Center. 

We are excited to announce that our art camp has 42 students in attendance. Students attend camp three nights a week. There are two youth sessions and one advanced/teen session. 

This year marks the Carnegie Arts Center’s 30th Anniversary.

 Throughout our history, we have always been fortunate to receive the support of generous individuals and businesses. They have donated their time, talent, and resources to make arts opportunities possible for their community members.

 The Box Butte Art Society and St. John’s Lutheran Church are two such organizations who have been kind enough to grant scholarship support for students to attend Art Camp. This year we are happy to announce that another two generous individuals have donated funds to provide camp scholarships for young artists to pursue their passions. One kind individual has asked to remain anonymous but requested that his donation specifically go towards supporting student artists. Our other generous individual, Bill Doole, previously of Alliance, NE has donated $1,000 in honor of his wife Peggy Doole. 

Peggy was an educator, master art historian, and life-long art enthusiast. The Doole family felt that Peggy would be pleased to see more children have access to art classes, and some would perhaps become shining stars amongst the art world one day. 

The Peggy Doole Scholarship will remain a great resource to provide art camp scholarships to youth for years to come. 

Congratulations to our four 2023 scholarships recipients for the Winter Adventures Art Camp, and our sincerest gratitude for such benevolent support of young artists. We are looking forward to welcoming our students into the Carnegie family and can’t wait to see what these marvelous young minds produce.

Alliance Nutrition Site to host annual Valentine's dinner

Lincoln – The Powerball jackpot has been growing since November without a winner. Because of the high jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 30 consecutive Powerball drawings since November 21, 2022, without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Monday, January 30 drawing to $613 million or $329 million with the cash option selected. This is the 9th largest jackpot in the history of the game.

This jackpot run has produced three big Powerball winners in Nebraska.

The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.04 billion jackpot.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

Powerball jackpot 9th largest ever

GOODLAND — A Goodland man has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for his conviction in the death of a child in 2020, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach said Monday in a news release.

Steven E. Johnson, 28, Goodland, was sentenced in Sherman County District Court by Judge Scott Showalter to 61 months in a Kansas Department of Corrections facility on one count of involuntary manslaughter and 43 months for one count of child abuse. Johnson pleaded no contest to the charges in December 2021.

The case stems from the death of a 3-month-old child on May 13, 2020. The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Goodland Police Department.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant Attorney General Jessica Domme of Kobach’s office.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Three young children were being treated for frostbite in Nebraska Sunday after police said two suspects stole an SUV while they were inside.

Around 3 a.m. Sunday, when temperatures were around 0 degrees, a man reported that his 2012 Chevrolet Traverse had been stolen with his three children inside, said Grand Island Police. An 18-year-old man and 17-year-old boy were arrested with the SUV before authorities found the 5-year-old and 1-year-old around 5 a.m. inside a second vehicle that had been reported stolen in Kearney.

About half an hour later, the infant was found on the front porch of a farmhouse in Hall County. All three children had suspected hypothermia and frostbite.

The Traverse was involved in a police pursuit before officers knew about the children. Eventually, investigators tracked the Traverse to a rural area of neighboring Buffalo County, and arrested the suspects.

The teens are facing an assortment of charges including kidnapping and intentional child abuse.

They were opportunities — for cheap labor.

Ami said most people have no idea that the school staff would send students out to work, often doing menial tasks, for strangers whose backgrounds weren't checked.

“A family came and picked me up and took me to their home. The task that they wanted me to do was pick up dog poop in their house,” Ami said during a listening session Friday in the Gila River Indian Community just south of Phoenix overseen by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/debra-haaland">U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland</a>.

She still remembers vehemently refusing to clean the house — and the fallout.“I got severely punished for not doing what that family had asked me to do. I was never allowed to go out on another outing," she said. "Then I started to wonder what happened to some of these kids that went out on these outings, that nobody ever followed up on them.”Ami was one of several people who spoke during Haaland’s visit to Arizona before a large audience that included Gov. Katie Hobbs and Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego.Several testimonies addressed issues in addition to abuse, such as losing one's culture and language. The session took place in the multipurpose room of Gila Crossing Community School, where artwork and banners reflected the heritage of the local tribe.“This is one step among many that we will take to strengthen and rebuild the bonds with the Native communities that federal Indian boarding school policies set out to break,” Haaland said before the session.Starting with the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/education-native-americans-cultures-congress-8e9dff912a6eb23d2e25d03a58fd314b">Indian Civilization Act of 1819</a>, the U.S. enacted laws and policies to establish and support the schools. The stated goal was to “civilize” Native Americans, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians, which was often carried out through abusive practices.In Arizona alone, there were 47 federal Indian boarding schools — and that number does not even include the religious and private institutions that received federal funding to run schools.“My ancestors and many of yours endured the horrors of the Indian boarding school assimilation policies carried out by the same department I now lead,” Haaland said. “This is the first time in history that a United States Cabinet secretary comes to the table with a shared trauma. That is not lost on me.”Haaland has prioritized publicly examining the trauma caused by these schools. In May, the Interior Department released a first-of-its-kind report pointing out 408 schools the federal government supported that stripped Native Americans of their cultures and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-wisconsin-us-department-of-the-interior-tennessee-texas-4bb30826b17c4426479f3a9082212fda">identities.</a>&nbsp;At least 500 children are known to have died at some of the schools. But when more research is done, that statistic is likely to rise.A majority of the speakers were descendants of boarding school survivors. They shared how their parents had a hard time learning how to be good parents because they were separated from their own — some at a very young age. Ami, whose father also went to a boarding school, remembered how he would refer to himself as “just a dumb Indian.”“I think he did eventually get rid of that image of being ‘a dumb Indian,’” Ami said. "But he never stopped using that phrase in reference to himself.”The vulnerability of victims has spurred tears at all of these sessions. However, Deborah Parker, chief executive of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition and a member of the Tulalip Tribes, said there's a feeling of hope, too.“There's a sense of encouragement. Yes, we can finally tell our stories and maybe we can begin to heal,” Parker said. “Those tears help cleanse emotions that we've been keeping inside of us for sometimes generations.”Congress is planning to reintroduce legislation to establish a boarding school “truth and healing commission,” according to Parker. It would be similar to one established in Canada in 2008. If passed, it would have a broader scope than the Interior Department’s investigation into federally run boarding schools and subpoena power.Meanwhile, a second report is pending in the school investigation launched by Haaland, who is a member of Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico. It will focus on burial sites, the schools’ impact on Indigenous communities and also try to account for federal funds spent on the troubled program.
