Highland Park Care Center in Alliance is raising funds to bring a parachute jumping team to the community for Nursing Home Week this May.

Nursing Home Week is May 8 - May 13. This year the theme is "Creating and Nurturing Connections".

"As most people know, we did the flyover, that was a kickoff to our Nursing Home Week the one year," Memory Support Household Nurse Coordinator DeeDee Behm said on KCOW radio. "COVID has kind of taken things down and things are settling down, they're not over. We still have our restrictions in the nursing home. But we thought, what a better way to kick off National Nursing Home Week and maybe kick off summer...and hopefully have a little bit more freedom this summer with having a parachute jump. So I did some research. And I found a group called The Patriot Parachute Team and contacted them. They are willing to come and help us do a performance for our residents. We thought what a better way to go with the theme of nurturing and creating connections than to include the community."

Behm said Highland Park Care Center asked the parachute team to give them a quote for two parachute jumpers.

"They will jump with a flag and smoke and just give us a performance," Behm said. "And when they're done jumping, they'll hang around so that everybody can visit with them and take pictures...and answer any questions. We thought we would do that on Sunday, May 8 for Mother's Day for anybody traveling in. So that's kind of our plan. We're still in the finality of getting the details. We need to raise the money so that we can make this happen for our residents and the community."

Behm said their original goal was to raise $8,500, but Highland Park is anticipating it will be $6,300.

"We've already gotten some donations," Behm said. "I have a couple of businesses that have already committed. I'm just waiting to hear for sure how much. I also contacted the chamber and the chamber is helping us as well as Chelsie Herian. She is reaching out and she's going to help us promote and see if we can't make this a great community event."

The Alliance Chamber of Commerce is also accepting donations for Highland Park. "If we can get all of our donations by March 31; that way we can secure the date, that would be fantastic," Behm said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Approximately 3,000 Canadian Pacific Railway conductors, engineers, train and yard workers represented by the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference will be returning to work after an agreement was reached between the railroad operator and union. 

A work stoppage that began Sunday brought trains to a halt across Canada and interrupted fertilizer and other shipments to and from the U.S. Canadian Pacific Railway said that it reached a deal with the Teamsters to enter into binding arbitration and end a work stoppage. 

Rail operations are expected to restart Tuesday.

CHADRON – Dr. Tawny Tibbits, assistant professor of Physical and Life Sciences, presented the first Graves Lecture of the spring semester in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center’s Chicoine Atrium March 15.

Tibbits’ lecture, Ray Guns and the Ancient Maya: Geoarchaeology in Belize, discussed the stone tools Maya people used to grind grain and specialized geologic measuring systems she used to trace the origins of the tools.

Tibbits described matatas&nbsp;(meh-tah-tays)&nbsp;and monos as grinding stones used to process grain by the ancient Maya.

“A matata (is) the grinding stone and the mono is dragged across the surface to grind up food or pigments or different materials,” she said.

Matatas and monos could be made of many materials including basalt and sandstone, but Tibbits focused her research on tracing those made of granite with the hope of understanding more about Maya civilization.

“One of the things I wanted to look at was how the stone grinding tools informed us about these changes in power,” Tibbits said. “Who controls the monos and matatas, controls the household economy.”

Tibbits detailed the political and cultural structure of the Maya civilization and how archeological artifacts contribute to that understanding.

“(In the Maya civilization) we have large centers that dominate, and they fought each other all the time. They were constantly vying for who was in charge of what, and again, a lot of times we see this through elite goods, things that the elite would have had control over that were imported from elsewhere,” Tibbits said.

According to Tibbits, in that region of the Maya world there were three main sources of granite: the Cockscomb Basin, the Hummingbird Ridge, and the Mountain Pine Ridge. Tibbits’ research traced where existing monos and matatas were sourced from to try to understand how the Maya acquired their grinding tools.

To determine the source of the granite tools, Tibbits used a portable X-ray Florescent gun (pXRF), a new archeological technology.

“Within 30 seconds you can have a complete chemical output from magnesium to uranium on the periodic table,” Tibbits said.

According to Tibbits, the pXRF is nondestructive and about the size and shape of a power drill.

“You can use it on soil, rocks, ceramics, glass, obsidian, chert, anything that’s solid,” she said.

Tibbits worked to find ways to use the pXRF to identify granite samples in the field.

“With my statistical tests, if you use five randomly selected data points and average them, you can statistically create the same data point as grinding it up, powdering it, and shipping it off,” Tibbits said.

She used three elements present in the granite samples, strontium, rubidium, and vitreum, to identify their points of origin. By identifying where the granite came from and noting where it was unearthed at a dig site, Tibbits was able to trace the journeys of the matatas and the Maya who carried them.

“I started to put together where the tools are coming from and where they’re ending up,” Tibbits said.

She hopes to return to Central America and continue her research on the Maya and the potential of pXRF technology. In the meantime, the science department will be bringing pXRF technology to CSC this fall.

The next Graves Lecture will be Tuesday, March 29, with Joanne Hayes sharing How I Got Here. On April 12, Dr. Margaret Crouse will conclude the series with I Walked Where Jesus Walked.

COLUMBUS, Neb.-Nebraska Public Power District, in observance of Nebraska Severe Weather Awareness Week March 21-25, is urging customers to be aware of the dangers of downed powerlines.

One result of severe spring storms are downed powerlines. Tornadoes can bring down transmission lines typically located in rural areas, but trees damaged by tornadoes or high wind conditions can come down on local distribution lines, creating a power outage to residents in the area.

“We urge the public to stay away from downed powerlines and poles, consider them to be live, and do not attempt to move them,” says Vice-President of Energy Delivery Art Wiese. “It is important to allow trained lineman to respond to the area to make sure the lines are deenergized and removed or repaired in a safe manner.”

“It’s also important to refrain from driving over powerlines if you come across one on a roadway,” adds Wiese. “If a powerline has fallen on a vehicle or is lying on the ground, it can charge the area around it with electricity.”

If you are in a car and a power line has fallen on it,&nbsp;stay in the car until public power utility personnel arrive on the scene. If remaining in the car is not an option due to a fire or other unsafe conditions,&nbsp;jump clear of the vehicle so that you land upright with your feet touching the ground together, and then shuffle away from the area.

Severe Weather Awareness Week brings reminder of downed powerlines

CHADRON – Six Chadron State College students attended the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) Meet the Pros event in Omaha with Art Professor Mary Donahue in early March. They are Kayah Bynes, Nicolle Baquet, and Elizabeth Myers of Chadron, Cole Martinez of Ulysses, Neb., Rylie Cole of Minden, Neb., and Mia MacDonald of Cheyenne, Wyo.

MacDonald, a senior majoring in graphic design, said she was impressed with the importance of networking at the event.

“The power of knowing and getting to know people and being able to express your passions to them, because they may just have the right person to connect you with. They confirmed that I'm in the right lane and taking the right steps to get where I want to go,” MacDonald said.

Bynes, a junior majoring in graphic design, said CSC helped prepare her for the conference.

“My best take-away from the course was to be motivated by what I love and not by money. A lot of the pros talked about how they started from just the passion and love for what they do and were able to make it become a career. I feel like I needed to hear that more than anything,” Bynes said.

She said the variety of speakers was impressive.

“There were people who directed films, created logos, came up with ideas for advertising, etc. it was very interesting to see how many different people with different backgrounds ended up in the same room on the same stage,” Bynes said.

Baquet, whose main interest is in advertising and marketing, said all of the professionals who spoke offered useful insights, but she especially enjoyed Clint Runge, CEO of Archrival, a youth culture agency that does a lot of untraditional marketing.

“He talked about one of the projects they had done for Red Bull, which was super interesting and a very unique way of marketing. We heard from many different professionals including professionals who do freelance work to those who are employed by one employer,” Baquet said.

She added that the portfolio review process was helpful.

“The first professional I got the chance to sit down with was from Swanson Russell. He was able to look over my resume and other advertising work that I have done in the past and give me good feedback and where I can improve on both, what was working already, and what he thought looked good,” Baquet said.

Cole said she was a bit surprised by how eager the professionals were to help students.

“The professionals at the conference were amazing connecting with students and leading us through a way to find jobs and how to navigate getting those connections, and what to say to the people you connect with,” Cole said.

Cole said one important realization for her was that connections are vital in the creative industry.

“The professionals shared a lot of information on how to reach out to other companies and professionals and gave some insight on how to land a job in the design/marketing world. Some companies offer great internships and others don’t have them listed but if you show interest then they might be willing to work with you even if they don’t have positions available,” Cole said.

Cole felt prepared for the portfolio review.

“Mary (Donahue) has helped the class a lot with the resume building process and making sure students are prepared and ready to go when we sit down and meet with professionals. She has also given me great pointers for how to improve my resume and make it fit the style of my personal brand,” Cole said.

Martinez said he was surprised and pleased to talk with the CEO of Bailey Lauerman.

Martinez said his CSC courses helped him prepare for the conference by building his database of work and developing his portfolio.

“It was really an eye-opener into the design, advertising field and a great way to connect with so many amazing people,” Martinez said.

Myers said as an Elementary Education major and a studio artist, she wasn’t expecting to gain much from the conference, but she was pleasantly surprised.

“I made some exciting connections that could lead me to a career path that includes my passions. I was able to promote my art business and receive some helpful insight to improve my website and marketing tactics. Always say yes to opportunities to connect with new people. I was considering not going, and I am so happy I did,” Myers said.

CSC students attend 'Meet the Pros' in Omaha

Though it may have come later than he would’ve liked, history professor James Le Sueur has been granted a new lease on life.

Le Sueur, a Samuel Clark Waugh distinguished professor of International Relations at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, teaches history related to colonialism, decolonization and terrorism. Over the past two decades, his fascination with history has led him into a second career as an award-winning independent filmmaker covering similar topics, but with a focus on the first-hand accounts of those who lived through historical events.&nbsp;

Although he dabbled in professional photography prior to attending college in the late 1980s, Le Sueur said his attention was eventually drawn away from the camera and deeper into academia. He would have to wait until the turn of the century to discover his fascination for filmmaking, and then even longer before his first official film release in 2020.

Le Sueur said he’d always had a fascination with history, especially as told through first-hand accounts. His first idea for a documentary project, titled “The Peril of Dissent,” drew inspiration from that interest, seeking to tell the stories of writers and artists who were forced into exile by terrorist groups, radical Islamist movements and authoritarian states in the Middle East.

He also began working on another project that explores the proliferation of terrorism leading up to the Sept. 11 attacks. However, both projects have remained in the pre-production phase for years due to another project he started, which would eventually become his first theatrical release.

“As I was moving towards finishing those two, I decided to just do this crazy idea of trying to make a movie about Václav Havel [former president of the Czech Republic] and the dissidents in Czechoslovakia who were driven underground by the communist regime and then eventually came to power in 1989 after the Velvet Revolution.”

Following three years of production, the result was 2020’s “The Art of Dissent,” published under his self-made production company,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.foxhollowfilms.com/" target="_blank">Fox Hollow Films</a>. His first official release won Le Sueur five filmmaking awards, legitimizing his work as more than just a side hobby.

“I think it’s fair to say we’ve made it,” Le Sueur said. “And that’s kind of raised the bar at Nebraska substantially because a lot [of filmmaking] was done here before, but never quite like this.”

Le Sueur’s most recent project hits much closer to home. “Seasons of COVID” will cover the whirlwind of events surrounding the pandemic that defined the past few years, with a greater emphasis on how it affected Nebraska.

“[‘The Art of Dissent’] was really heaviest about intellectuals and writers,” Le Sueur said. “This one is not like that. This one is about us; it’s about our stories, about the state of Nebraska. It’s also about police reform and racism, medical difficulties. It’s about anti-science movements. It’s about the alt-right infecting our political discourse.”

Beyond the messages he attempts to convey through his work, Le Sueur said he’s grateful for the expanded freedom he’s found in how he can convey ideas through the visual medium of filmmaking compared to writing books or essays on a subject. Furthermore, he said he especially appreciates being able to control the filmmaking process at every stage of its production.

“[Filmmaking] allows me to speak in different languages, not just with words, but with visual images. I think I can connect to people different with my camera work,” Le Sueur said. “I do my own cinematography and sound and lighting, so I’m really unique in the world in that sense, probably the only professional historian who can actually do this stuff.”

Le Sueur said the informative language of documentaries in particular is especially apt for the current times.

“This is the age of documentaries,” Le Sueur said. “There are people who just want more from cinema, and there’s more people who want more from their TV.”

Though he places great significance on his self-sufficiency as a filmmaker, Le Sueur doesn’t try to do it completely on his own, and in delegating parts of the work to others, he said he’s found a different kind of fulfillment.

“I think one of the cool things now, because I’m in this kind of good position, I can help other emerging filmmakers,” Le Sueur said.

Shema Yahya is one such benefactor. A junior integrated science major from Rwanda, Yahya got in touch with Le Sueur through a mutual acquaintance, and he’s now been tasked with helping Le Sueur to animate the maps and various other graphics for “Seasons of COVID.”

Yahya said the job has been challenging, but he’s grateful for how it’s pushed him to grow.

“It’s a really creative-based type of job. It forces you to really think outside the box, and just, you know, very hands-on learning,” Yahya said. “That’s kind of how he’s helping me develop my skills. And also my communication skills because I have to really explain to him, like, coming up with an idea that maybe makes sense to my brain, but make sure he understands what I’m saying.”

Yahya said what stands out to him the most about the professor’s most recent project is the potential for broadening peoples’ perspectives on the pandemic.

“During COVID, everybody was very much in their homes, and they were seeing things through the window, so to speak,” Yahya said. “He had this cool idea of trying to show basically all the things you can’t see because you can only see from one window.”

Looking beyond to the future, Le Sueur said he hopes to make a big splash on the market with his production company without leaving Nebraska.

“What I’d like to do in the end is [keep the production company] in Nebraska, so we can actually make a major filmmaking move here,” Le Sueur said. “I know I can do it, I just need to figure out exactly how to assemble the pieces. But I’m not going away, and I’ve been able to be successful by just being determined not to fail.”

Over the past two decades, his fascination with history has led him into a second career as an award-winning independent filmmaker covering similar topics, but with a focus on the first-hand accounts of those who lived through historical events.&nbsp;Although he dabbled in professional photography prior to attending college in the late 1980s, Le Sueur said his attention was eventually drawn away from the camera and deeper into academia. He would have to wait until the turn of the century to discover his fascination for filmmaking, and then even longer before his first official film release in 2020.Le Sueur said he’d always had a fascination with history, especially as told through first-hand accounts. His first idea for a documentary project, titled “The Peril of Dissent,” drew inspiration from that interest, seeking to tell the stories of writers and artists who were forced into exile by terrorist groups, radical Islamist movements and authoritarian states in the Middle East.He also began working on another project that explores the proliferation of terrorism leading up to the Sept. 11 attacks. However, both projects have remained in the pre-production phase for years due to another project he started, which would eventually become his first theatrical release.“As I was moving towards finishing those two, I decided to just do this crazy idea of trying to make a movie about Václav Havel [former president of the Czech Republic] and the dissidents in Czechoslovakia who were driven underground by the communist regime and then eventually came to power in 1989 after the Velvet Revolution.”Following three years of production, the result was 2020’s “The Art of Dissent,” published under his self-made production company,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.foxhollowfilms.com/" target="_blank">Fox Hollow Films</a>. His first official release won Le Sueur five filmmaking awards, legitimizing his work as more than just a side hobby.“I think it’s fair to say we’ve made it,” Le Sueur said. “And that’s kind of raised the bar at Nebraska substantially because a lot [of filmmaking] was done here before, but never quite like this.”Le Sueur’s most recent project hits much closer to home. “Seasons of COVID” will cover the whirlwind of events surrounding the pandemic that defined the past few years, with a greater emphasis on how it affected Nebraska.“[‘The Art of Dissent’] was really heaviest about intellectuals and writers,” Le Sueur said. “This one is not like that. This one is about us; it’s about our stories, about the state of Nebraska. It’s also about police reform and racism, medical difficulties. It’s about anti-science movements. It’s about the alt-right infecting our political discourse.”Beyond the messages he attempts to convey through his work, Le Sueur said he’s grateful for the expanded freedom he’s found in how he can convey ideas through the visual medium of filmmaking compared to writing books or essays on a subject. Furthermore, he said he especially appreciates being able to control the filmmaking process at every stage of its production.“[Filmmaking] allows me to speak in different languages, not just with words, but with visual images. CHADRON – Chadron State College has announced its annual Scholastic Contest will now occur in the fall semester, rather than the spring semester. The event, which traditionally draws hundreds of high school students from Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado to compete in dozens of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/scholastic/test/info.php" target="_blank">academic tests</a>, is set for Nov. 9, 2022.

Scholastic Contest committee co-chairs, Dr. Jamie Hamaker, associate professor in Business and Dr. Tara Hart, associate vice president for Enrollment Management, met with key administrators as they planned to change the date.

“CSC is proud of the Scholastic Contest, and area schools love it and want to be a part of it. We want to provide an academic opportunity for their students to come and compete.&nbsp;These students are high academic achievers,” Hart said.

Hart said as the Scholastic Committee thoroughly evaluated the event, they looked for untapped opportunities.&nbsp;

“We felt like if there was ever a time to consider shifting Scholastic Day this was the year,” Hart said. “We needed to do our due diligence so we reached out to all the high schools that had expressed interest in coming this spring. We were able to have a dialogue with some and ask what time of year would be best for their students.&nbsp;We want to&nbsp;serve them and their students better with activities.”

Considerations for establishing the new date included avoiding timing conflicts with high school athletic events, FFA, and&nbsp;ACT and SAT dates.

“We want the students to experience campus life. We're planning hands-on activities and reaching out to faculty who are designing and providing tests. We’d also like to see if faculty and staff would do various demonstrations,” Hart said.

The committee is considering a CSC student panel and&nbsp;sessions by CSC students such as, what it means to be an NCAA II student-athlete and what it is like to be a student leader.

“In addition to having fun hanging out in the Student Center, we really want the high school students to better understand what it means to be part of CSC student organizations and see the variety of options available here.&nbsp;I love it when we educate any students, teachers or counselors about what we do and not only that we are an affordable institution with a high-quality education, but what it means to access higher education, in general,” Hart said.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all the people who volunteer to keep this store going. We couldn’t do it without you.

The Alliance Mission Store would like to share some facts with you, all of our volunteers, all of our customers, and the people who donate to our store because you all mean so much to us.

First and foremost – we are very thankful for your donations and your business. We just wanted the public to know that we are a “different type of business” than your ordinary businesses here in Alliance. Unlike other stores in Alliance, we operate on an all volunteer staff. Therefore we have a small amount of overhead. Since we are all volunteer it is hard to compare us with other stores in Alliance. We are all very thankful for the businesses in Alliance that employ people. This keeps Alliance going strong. Out of the monies earned from selling items at the store, we pay for the heat, air conditioning, lights, and building maintenance, and numerous sanitizer products. After that, the money is saved to be given away during our grant program for the year.

The Alliance Mission Store is a blessing for all those who have been helped by its mission, but to run the Mission Store is a process in itself, more so than simply hanging clothes in the store. Since Covid, the way we sort all items has changed. We now have a Board Team that sorts through everything and puts it in containers to be hung or put out by our great volunteer groups, alleviating anything that is broken or chipped. Clothing is presorted to help with identifying broken zippers, missing buttons, etc. Things are wiped off, cleaned up and in some instances sprayed with sanitizer. 

So where does this unusable clothing go? 

We purchased a new very large baler that is located at the back of the store in the sorting room. We make up large 6’x6’ bales of clothing that cannot or does not sell in the store within a certain period of time. Keep Alliance Beautiful (KAB) helps us stack the bales upstairs in the back room and in the sorting room by the dock until we have enough for a semi to come and recycle them. We sell them by the pound to various buyers to be recycled once again. Some buyers send them overseas and some keep them elsewhere in the U.S. All monies received from the selling of the bales goes into the bank to be given in grants right here in Box Butte County.

Just an FYI for all of you who donate “Holiday” items…we have a special team that sorts &amp; saves those type of items to be put out for sale during that specific holiday time.

We receive a lot of books and we have a special group of volunteers that sort the books by category and some are even alphabetized by author. Of course, not all books can be saved for months…our books are rotated regularly after bag days and are again recycled through several other entities here in Box Butte County. (Bag Days are a certain price for a grocery bag full of your choice of items. These days are the 2nd Saturday and the last Thursday of each month). 

The Mission Store is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All organized, non-profit groups are eligible for funds through the Mini-Grant Program. This program starts each year on September 1st and runs to October 15. Anyone wanting to apply for a grant, may come into the store and ask for a grant application at the front desk beginning Sept. 1st. One of our main rules for grants is that you cannot use the money to pay someone’s wage.

In 2021 we awarded $62,935.00 in grants throughout Box Butte County.

At approximately 3:35 p.m. on March 20 a Dodge Ram truck was traveling northbound on Highway 385, near Kansas Street, when it was struck by a Nissan Altima.

The crash left the Nissan in the east ditch on Highway 385.&nbsp;

"No life-threatening injuries were reported," Nebraska State Patrol Spokesman Cody Thomas said. "The driver of the Altima was cited for failure to yield the right of way and no insurance."

The Alliance Police Department, Alliance EMS, Alliance Volunteer Fire Department and Nebraska State Patrol assisted with this accident.&nbsp;

Life expectancy is a measure commonly considered when it comes to the overall health of a population. In this day and age, when most of us think about which medical interventions are most important to increase life expectancy, we probably think about things like treatment of cancer, interventions to treat heart attacks, or surgeries for life threatening illnesses. While those things are all important, their overall impact on a population’s life expectancy pales in comparison to the prevention of infectious disease.

Average life expectancy around the world has doubled in the last two hundred years, from about 40 years to 80 years, with the bulk of that change occurring long before we had effective cancer treatment or cardiac catheterization. Before the 20th century, infant and childhood death was extremely common due to infections spread by contaminated water and food. It is estimated that through most of human history nearly half of children died before adulthood, almost entirely due to infections.

Armed with the new knowledge of germ theory, societies in the late 1800’s began instituting early public health interventions such as sewage management, water treatment, milk pasteurization, and garbage collection, which resulted in rapid decreases in death from food and water borne infections, and thus increased population wide life expectancy.

Later, widespread use of vaccines for many fatal diseases led to enormous improvements in the health and longevity of populations across the globe. Try to imagine a world in which almost everyone is affected by the death of children due to polio, measles, smallpox, tetanus, the list goes on. That these deaths are now extremely rare or eliminated altogether is nothing short of a modern miracle, and we ought not take it for granted.

Antibiotic use has exploded since the discovery of penicillin in 1928, and the proper use of antibiotics continues to help us prevent early death due to infections that might have been fatal left untreated. Modern science has led to effective treatments for even the most challenging infections such as tuberculosis and HIV.

Modern medicine uses abundant, wonderful technologies and treatments which help us extend lives and reduce suffering of our individual patients. But statistically, no fancy new development is likely to have the quantitative impact on human society that compares to those early public health measures. As a society, we would be careless to forget the worth of our public health institutions which have helped us thrive and double our average life expectancy.

Lincoln, Neb. –&nbsp;An inmate who went missing last month from the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L) has been arrested in Scottsbluff. Authorities say they located&nbsp;John Nereson #211183 while investigating a report of someone living near a storage center. Scottsbluff police arrested him on Thursday, March 17, 2022.

Nereson disappeared on February 24, 2022 after leaving CCC-L and walking toward a bus stop. His sentence started&nbsp;on February 18, 2020. Nereson was sentenced to eight years to 12 years on multiple charges out of Scotts Bluff County that include assault on an officer using a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, use of deadly weapon to commit a felony, fifth offense driving under the influence and driving while on a revoked license. He has a tentative release date of June 26, 2025 and a parole eligibility date of June 26, 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

CCC-L is one of two community custody facilities operated by NDCS. Community custody is the lowest custody level and the least restrictive facility. Inmates are allowed to participate in work opportunities, attend school and religious services with prior approval and without direct supervision.

WALLACE, Neb.-Wildfires are a fact of life on the Nebraska plains, and with dry conditions forecasted, fire officials want the public to know what they can do to help.

On March 23, local fire departments and retired fire Marshal Ralph Moul will discuss actions the public can take to help in the event of a wildfire.

The event will be held at the Wallace Legion Hall at 7:00 p.m.

-How to stay safe around fire -How to protect your property -Ways to assist fire departments in pasture/field fires -What the community can do to assist in large fires

The event is free and open to the public.

We also urge you to review your plans, practice your plans, and have multiple ways to receive severe weather watch and warning information.

Nebraska statewide tornado drill scheduled for March 23

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have completed a special enforcement operation designed to maintain safe roadways on St. Patrick’s Day.

“On St. Patrick’s Day or any other day, it’s always important to have a sober driver lined up if you’ve been drinking,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Alcohol plays a factor in approximately one of every three fatal crashes in Nebraska. Using a designated driver, a rideshare, a cab, or safe ride program makes your ride home safer for you and everyone else on the road.”

During the St. Patrick’s Day effort, troopers arrested three people for driving under the influence and issued citations for speeding (66), open alcohol container (8), minor in possession of alcohol (3), driving under suspension (8), no seat belt (3), and improper child restraint (1). Troopers also performed 63 motorist assists throughout the day.

This effort was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $11,800 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

Troopers complete St. Patrick’s Day Campaign

A total of 131 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, learned about their residency assignments today during an event at the Baxter Arena in Omaha. &nbsp; The 2022 Main Residency Match® -- referred to as Match Day,&nbsp;is an annual rite of passage for medical students - a day when students across the country learn where they will train for the next three to seven years, depending on the medical area of their choice. Students are matched through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.

Forty percent of UNMC students are staying in Nebraska for their training, and 54 percent matched in primary care, which includes family medicine, internal medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology.

Nationally there were 39,205 residency positions, the largest number on record.
