CHADRON – Chadron State College student Jeremy Carley was the Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for November.

Carley is a senior of Dalton, Nebraska, who chose Business Finance as a major because it seemed interesting and he liked math and money while he was growing up. Being a member of the Rural Business Leaders Initiative (RBLI) provides him with a full tuition scholarship and opportunities to network with professionals in the business world and create friendships with other people in the organization. His sister, Janessa, is in the program, as well, and recommended CSC’s business program to him.

RBLI offers four-year tuition scholarships to students who are interested in working in banking, agribusiness, or accounting in rural Nebraska. Carley wanted to be a part of RBLI because he enjoys being close to home, family. After graduation, Carley would like to return to rural Nebraska for employment.

“Being in RBLI has helped assure me that I want to stay rural,” Carley said. “I’ve enjoyed seeing what businesses can do for a smaller community.”

Carley is unsure what aspect of business finance he wants to pursue and is open to the best job offer, but he would like to be involved with sports.

“I’ve thought about a couple of career options,” Carley said. “Working with a sports team in their finance department would be nice, but I like to keep my options open.”

If Carley wasn’t a business major, he said he would probably be majoring in something to do with sports.

In addition to RBLI, Carley said he appreciates Project Strive.

“Project Strive has helped me learn various new skills through the events they have put on throughout the years,” Carley said.

Relationships with family and friends are a priority for Carley.

“The relationships I have formed with people are what drove me to Chadron and what continues to drive me to love small communities,” Carley said. “I know that I want to make a difference wherever I end up and I love seeing positive changes in small communities.”

Carley works for the events staff at CSC where he performs tasks to help sporting events operate smoothly.

When Carley isn’t in school, he loves watching and playing sports, and playing video games.

“Jeremy is a great student and leader,” Schaer said. “He works hard in his classes and has been a mentor to students. Jeremy comes to many Strive events and encourages other Strive students to attend events as well. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Jeremy.”

Pete Ricketts to seek U.S. Senate appointment

Most Nebraska ranchers and their veterinarians probably don’t pay much attention to the scenery and historical significance of their surroundings when there’s work to be done, but a recent trip to Northwest Nebraska by veterinarians Ben and Erin Schroeder of “Heartland Docs, DVM” combined all of those elements.

The Schroeders made the trek from Hartington to Harrison to work cattle for client Jerry Stewart, who owns property in Sioux County. A vet tech and an assistant from Schroeders’ Cedar County Veterinary Services joined them, visiting western Nebraska for the first time. Since launching their National Geographic Wild show in 2019 the couple said they’ve had the opportunity to explore more of Nebraska.

Whether its releasing raptors at Fontenelle Forest, watching the crane migration or working cattle in Northwest Nebraska, the Schroeders share the unique opportunities with camera crews and viewers each episode.

“I’ve lived in Nebraska my entire life and never done some of these things,” Ben said, adding that residents need to get out and discover everything the state has to offer. “I told Erin there’s one thing I love almost as much as her, and that’s the state of Nebraska.”

Ben grew up in Cedar County before heading to Kansas State University for veterinary school, where he met Erin, a native of upstate New York. Two weeks later they were engaged; they eventually returned to Hartington to work with Ben’s father, John, in his veterinary practice. They purchased the business in 2007 and expanded it to include offices in Yankton and Vermillion, South Dakota. With seven vets and 27 staff members, they were plenty busy, but took on the challenge of renovating historic buildings in their hometown.

“Ben and I really enjoy historic buildings,” Erin said.

An Omaha World-Herald story about their work, which includes the 1917 Hartington Hotel, dubbed them the next Chip and Joanna Gaines of “Fixer Upper” fame.

“It went out on the AP (Associated Press), and all these calls started coming in,” Erin recalled.

An initial pitch to renovate vet clinics held little interest for the Schroeders, but a 2018 Skype interview caught the attention of National Geographic Wild. In January 2019, Ben and Erin learned “Heartland Docs, DVM” would be picked up for one season.

“I’ll never forget that phone call,” Ben said.

The constant presence of camera crews forces the couple to be always in the moment.

“It makes us have a deeper connection,” Erin said. “We wanted to be authentic. We really wanted to represent what the Midwest is all about and be a positive voice for agriculture.”

“With that comes great responsibility,” Ben added. Agriculture is number one industry in Nebraska, and it’s how we feed the world, he continued. It’s important to them they tell that story and educate viewers on topics like animal welfare and safety, beef quality assurance and fear-free animal handling.

Ben grew up traveling to farms and ranches as a child with his father and loved the camaraderie he saw.

“I fell in love with the people and lifestyle,” he said. That drove his decision to enter vet school, while Erin said she knew from a young age she would be a veterinarian.

Sharing the moments they experience with their clients, along with their two sons, Charlie and Chase, on television was an unexpected turn but one for which they are grateful.

“We are a testament to just say yes and try,” Ben said, adding that each time they’ve been uncertain, they’ve had the courage to say yes and it’s led to nothing but good things.

They are currently shooting season five of “Heartland Docs, DVM.”

“Everybody’s worried the magic is going to quit,” Ben said. “We’ll keep doing the show as long as it makes us feel good at the end of the day.”

They’ve put further renovations of historic buildings on hold, and they sold their two South Dakota practices since starting the show, prioritizing what’s most important to them.

On a recent morning in Northwest Nebraska, with the mercury sitting at 2 degrees, that was working cattle for a valued client. In between sessions at the ranch, Ben, Erin and their crew stayed at Fort Robinson State Park, where all those historic buildings had Erin excited. The focus of this trip, however, had to remain on the veterinary work at hand.

“We definitely know we’re coming back,” Ben said.

Vet work, TV show allows Schroeders to travel the state

A Workshop on Solar for Farms, Homes, and Businesses will be held on Dec. 7 in Chadron at the Dawes County&nbsp;4-H Building from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. MT.&nbsp; &nbsp;

This workshop is for homeowners, farmers, and business owners who are interested in exploring solar PV systems. 

The workshop will review the function, feasibility, and economic return of solar electric systems for farms, homes, and businesses.&nbsp; Each solar installation is unique, and individuals have their own reasons for exploring solar installations.&nbsp;

 This workshop will help you decide if solar is right for you, by learning about how systems work, safety, the value of electricity, value of incentives, and how to evaluate quotes from installers. 

The speaker will be Nebraska Extension Educator, F. John Hay, who has 10 years’ experience doing solar economic analysis and installed solar at his home in 2017.

Solar workshop to be held at Dawes County 4-H building in Chadron

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Major freight railroads are facing pressure to add sick days for their workers from a new front: An influential investment group says some of its members are now pushing the measure that Congress declined to as part of the contracts they imposed last week to avert a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-strikes-climate-and-environment-government-politics-92ea7632a29f807ccc0e2658c50d731e">potentially devastating</a>&nbsp;nationwide rail strike.

The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility said Monday that two investment managers it works with to help promote social change at companies had filed proposals at Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern railroads to give shareholders a vote on whether rail workers should get paid sick leave. Similar proposals are likely to be filed at CSX and at BNSF's parent company of Berkshire Hathaway, but they haven't been submitted yet. The ICCR represents 300 members with over $4 trillion in assets.

The lack of paid sick time in the industry became a major sticking point this fall in contract talks between the railroads and their 12 unions. Four of those unions&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-congress-government-and-politics-79d2e2c2779598b0a14396464ee4f7e9">rejected five-year deals</a>&nbsp;that included 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses because of their concerns about sick leave, demanding schedules and other&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-government-and-politics-207229bcd558b6a6c1d58f3f85e2d804">quality-of-life concerns.</a>

President Joe Biden&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-business-economy-government-and-politics-fe5f657b036b2b612d072368584e00cd">signed a bill Friday</a>&nbsp;that forces railroad workers to accept those deals that were negotiated back in September and prohibits them from going on strike. A separate bill that would have required sick time&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-politics-pete-buttigieg-strikes-congress-c95510555dcd4cdc2d839e61d1195b06">failed in the Senate</a>.

Labor groups said after Congress acted they will keep fighting for sick time and better working conditions even though this round of negotiations that began three years ago is now over because their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-strikes-congress-d2ae4d3aecb27f176418518d977e69e1">concerns linger</a>.

Marvin Owens with nonprofit investment manager Impact Shares filed the shareholder proposal at Norfolk Southern. Impact Shares works with groups like the YWCA and NAACP to establish criteria for funds. Owens said companies should consider sick time as an investment in its workforce, not an expense.

“In this day and age, this really boggles the mind why a company would not provide that given the need to retain workers and really provide workers with the kind of support needed to keep them in place and to keep them healthy. Paid sick leave is key to that," Owens said.

The railroads refused to add sick time during these negotiations because they said the unions had agreed over the decades to forgo paid sick leave in favor of higher wages and strong short-term disability benefits that start to kick in after four or seven days and replace part of a worker's wages for up to a year.

The railroads also say employees can take personal leave days or vacation days for illnesses, although workers say those have to be approved far ahead of time so they aren't very useful for illnesses. Workers are also allowed to take unpaid time off for illnesses but they may be penalized under a railroad's attendance policy if they miss too many days.

The Association of American Railroads trade group also said the special board of arbitrators that intervened in the contract dispute this summer opted not to recommend paid sick time.

A spokesman for the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division union that rejected its deal with the railroads praised the investors' action.

“The railroads never engaged on this issue in good faith. Their arrogance led us to this juncture and it has rightfully left their public reputation bruised. That’s their fault,” said Clark Ballew with the BMWED. ”There’s no excuse other than their insatiable greed and that is a flimsy, pathetic excuse at that."

Union Pacific said in a statement that it “knows quality of life concerns are real and we are working with employees to make changes.”

Norfolk Southern declined to comment on the investor proposal.

A separate bill that would have required sick time&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-politics-pete-buttigieg-strikes-congress-c95510555dcd4cdc2d839e61d1195b06">failed in the Senate</a>.Labor groups said after Congress acted they will keep fighting for sick time and better working conditions even though this round of negotiations that began three years ago is now over because their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-strikes-congress-d2ae4d3aecb27f176418518d977e69e1">concerns linger</a>.Marvin Owens with nonprofit investment manager Impact Shares filed the shareholder proposal at Norfolk Southern. Impact Shares works with groups like the YWCA and NAACP to establish criteria for funds. Owens said companies should consider sick time as an investment in its workforce, not an expense.“In this day and age, this really boggles the mind why a company would not provide that given the need to retain workers and really provide workers with the kind of support needed to keep them in place and to keep them healthy. Paid sick leave is key to that," Owens said.The railroads refused to add sick time during these negotiations because they said the unions had agreed over the decades to forgo paid sick leave in favor of higher wages and strong short-term disability benefits that start to kick in after four or seven days and replace part of a worker's wages for up to a year.The railroads also say employees can take personal leave days or vacation days for illnesses, although workers say those have to be approved far ahead of time so they aren't very useful for illnesses. Workers are also allowed to take unpaid time off for illnesses but they may be penalized under a railroad's attendance policy if they miss too many days.The Association of American Railroads trade group also said the special board of arbitrators that intervened in the contract dispute this summer opted not to recommend paid sick time.A spokesman for the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division union that rejected its deal with the railroads praised the investors' action.“The railroads never engaged on this issue in good faith. Their arrogance led us to this juncture and it has rightfully left their public reputation bruised. That’s their fault,” said Clark Ballew with the BMWED. ”There’s no excuse other than their insatiable greed and that is a flimsy, pathetic excuse at that."Union Pacific said in a statement that it “knows quality of life concerns are real and we are working with employees to make changes.”Norfolk Southern declined to comment on the investor proposal.

Investors press railroads to add sick time for workers

Today at approximately 10:16 a.m. Scottsbluff police were called to a two vehicle non-injury accident at the intersection of West 26th Street and Ave E in Scottsbluff. 

"A 2006 Silver Chevy HHR driven by 22-year-old Scottsbluff resident Demetria Mills was driving westbound on West 26th Street with two passengers," Scottsbluff Police Corporal Andrew Soucie said. "The Chevy HHR failed to yield to the right of way and entered the intersection as a 2022 orange Freightliner Semi truck with no trailer, driven by 31-year-old Scottsbluff resident Tervarus Ages, was driving south bound on Ave E. The silver Chevy HHR contacted the driver’s side of the orange Freightliner in the intersection causing damage."

The Chevy HHR was totaled and towed from the scene with damages estimated to be over $5,000. 

The orange Freightliner sustained minor damage to the passenger side and was driven away. 

Mills was charged with possession of narcotic paraphernalia after multiple items were found.&nbsp;

There were no injuries reported by any of the occupants involved.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Authorities said a Hershey man was killed in an automobile crash on Sunday.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened at around 1:20 p.m. near mile marker 169 on U.S. Highway 30, in between Hershey and North Platte.

Authorities said a sedan driven by Bruce Miller, 79, of Hershey, was westbound and crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with a pickup driven by Travis Doss, 26, of Idaho.

Miller was pronounced dead at the scene, while Doss was transported to Great Plains Health with non-life-threatening injuries.

Accident reconstructionists were called to work the accident and concluded that Miller likely suffered a medical incident at the time of the crash.

Drugs and alcohol were not a factor and seat belts were in use.&nbsp;

CHADRON – During its Nov. 10 meeting, the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees approved two requests from Chadron State College.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nscs.edu/board-materials/2022/2022-11-10_BOT-Mtg" target="_blank">first request</a>&nbsp;was for Crites Hall and the remaining West Court Housing building, to be removed from the Revenue Bond System. Crites Hall was part of the System when bonds were issued for it in 1937 and West Court was part of the System when bonds were issued for it in 1961, but the bonds on both buildings have been paid in full. Crites Hall once functioned as a student residence hall and West Court Housing once functioned as family student housing. Crites Hall shifted to predominantly state use as a student services facility years ago and the majority of the West Court buildings were demolished in 2017-2019 with the one remaining building shifted to state use, first as a veteran center, and currently as an art classroom.

In other business, the Board approved CSC’s request to use up to $800,000 in uncommitted cash funds to complete the Coffee Agriculture Pavilion as originally intended. The Pavilion was built in 2013 and designed to include an extended roof structure on the east end of the facility allowing for the planned expansion of the arena when funds became available.&nbsp;

Governor Ricketts concluded a fourth successful trade mission to Japan.&nbsp; Delegates on the mission included representatives from Nebraska’s ag businesses, state commodity organizations, the Nebraska Farm Bureau, the Department of Agriculture (NDA), and the Department of Economic Development (DED).&nbsp;

On Tuesday, the trade delegation met with the United States Meat Export Federation (USMEF) to discuss opportunities for expanding Nebraska’s beef and pork exports to Japan.&nbsp; Japan is Nebraska’s largest market for pork and 2nd largest for beef, the latter of which has seen annual sales rise by $215 million, an 88% increase, since 2015.

Throughout the week, the ag delegation met with various trade organizations, business partners, and government officials to discuss opportunities for increasing Nebraska’s ag exports to Japan.

Many of the representatives in the delegation are also farmers and ranchers, which allowed Japanese companies to hear directly from Nebraskans who supply their beef, pork, wheat, and corn to Japan through Nebraska’s exporters.&nbsp; This included Ivan Rush, Director at the Nebraska Beef Council; Shana Beattie, Past President of the Nebraska Pork Producers Association; Mark Knobel, Chairman of the Nebraska Wheat Board; and Mark McHargue, President of the Nebraska Farm Bureau.

Conversations also highlighted Nebraska’s advancements in ethanol—like carbon sequestration and the adoption of higher ethanol blends—to leaders in Tokyo.&nbsp;

The Governor and industry experts, including Jan tenBensel, Chairman of the Nebraska Ethanol Board, also spoke with Japanese government officials about the solutions Nebraska ethanol offers as Japan seeks to provide cheaper, cleaner fuel for vehicle and air travel.&nbsp; This included meetings with leaders at the U.S. Embassy in Japan, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

Additionally, Gov. Ricketts and the delegation met with members of the Japanese business and trade communities represented by Keidanren, also known as the Japan Business Federation, and the Japan External Trade Organization. Both groups are valued partners with Nebraska’s Department of Economic Development.

During the early morning hours of December 4, the Chadron Police Department took a Missing Person Report. The reporting party stated that on December 1, 33-year-old, Paul Bear Saves Life, walked away from his Chadron residence to take a stroll, but never returned and they have not heard from him.

Paul Bear Saves Life has been entered as a missing person. He is described as being 6’3”, 210 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes. He was last observed wearing Grey Parachute Pants, a Dark Blue T-Shirt with a flag on it and a black Zip-up Hoodie.

The Chadron Police Department asks that anyone who has seen or knows where Paul Bear Saves Life may be, please call the Chadron Police Department at 308-432-0510.

Ash Hollow State Historical Park will have limited access starting in mid-December to allow for park improvements focused on improving accessibility.

Both the public bathroom and the sidewalk entrance to the visitor center will be renovated to meet wheelchair accessibility requirements.

During construction, no vehicle or foot access will be permitted to the visitor center or parking area. Some activities at the park also may be interrupted during construction.

Access to the rest of the park will remain open daily from sunrise to sunset, including the primitive restrooms. A valid park entry permit is required to be on Ash Hollow State Historical Park grounds and is available at the iron ranger at the entrance of the Garden County park.

Construction is expected to be completed by early spring.

Construction project set to start at Ash Hollow State Historical Park

As muzzleloader deer season gets underway, hunters are being reminded that the Pine Ridge was added to Nebraska’s list of Mule Deer Conservation Area units this year. That means hunters must carry a Pine Ridge MDCA Permit to harvest mule deer in the unit; the Statewide Muzzleloader and Restricted Statewide Buck permits are no longer valid for that species there.

It also means the Pine Ridge MDCA permit — which is valid for any deer, except antlerless mule deer — is valid for both the November firearm and December muzzleloader seasons.

Special permit required for muzzleloader muley hunters in Pine Ridge

At approximately 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 1, the Nebraska State Patrol received a report of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 92 just west of Melbeta. 

"A Buick Park Avenue was traveling eastbound on Highway 92 and crossed the center line, striking a westbound Ford F-150," Nebraska State Patrol spokeman Cody Thomas said.&nbsp;

The driver of the Buick, 25-year-old Syrena Parks of Bayard, was transported by helicopter to Regional West Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased. 

The driver of the Ford, 23-year-old Alexis Guardado of Douglas, Wyoming, was transported to Regional West, where he was treated and released for minor injuries.

Kris Kringle Christmas Boutique to be held in Chadron 

SCOTTSBLUFF&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting an officer-involved shooting investigation in Gering. 

The incident involving the Gering Police Department occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m. MT Thursday.

Officers with the Gering Police Department had responded to a report of a man threatening self-harm at a residence at 1200 M Street in Gering. Preliminary investigation indicates that as officers were contacting the subject, identified as Dannie Emrick, 53, Emrick pointed a firearm at officers. At that time, an officer discharged his service weapon multiple times, striking the subject. Officers immediately rendered medical aid.

Emrick was transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance, where he remains in stable condition.

The Gering Police Department has requested that the Nebraska State Patrol Special Investigations Team conduct an investigation into the incident.
