Family Nurse Practitioner Kailee Kelly at Greater Nebraska Medical and Surgical Services (GNMSS) recently started a new hormonal program called "Better Options" in Alliance.

This is a separate clinic from the hospital in Alliance Community Pharmacy

"I decided, after having several patients came to me with questions about their hormone health and having to refer them out of the community for testing and treatment. I wanted to bring treatment options to the community," Kelly said. "Right now, there's nobody in town that offers pellet therapy, which is the use of bio identical hormones. They're plant based and produced in nature. You can't patent that, therefore, it's not a drug because it is not FDA approved. But, it is FDA monitored."

Kelly starts patients off with a lab panel first.

"I'll check&nbsp; a complete blood count, chemistry profile, check their electrolytes, glucose, kidney and liver function," Kelly said. "Plus hormones. For example, thyroid, and then the breakdowns of thyroid T3 and T4 if necessary. Additional hormones such as vitamin B-12, vitamin D, estrogen, testosterone and PSA. All those labs, they can be very expensive. And sometimes insurance doesn't cover them. Even if they do, and they've met their deductible, that panel could cost $2,000. I have a contract with Quest where we can do the panel for $100 for females, and $110 for males. It is cash pay only. I start with the labs and look for any deficiencies and then discuss options during/following consultation. They can also take their labs and follow up with their primary care provider. If they want traditional therapy or other options other than pellet therapy, the choice is theirs."

"Labs can also be ran for prevention wellness if their insurance doesn't cover annual labs," Kelly said. "You can come to me consult lab work and take them to their primary[doctor] for review. After I do the labs, I'll do a consultation to discuss the treatment options. There are more risks with traditional [therapy] than with bio identical. We know that blood clots, cancer, those things exist. That's kind of why hormones have a bad rap. But, with the use of bio identical hormones they use safer 'better' options. I have been referring patients to Good Life Pharmacy out of Ord, NE. They do saliva testing and compound their own creams, patches, pills, etc. And a lot of what they use is bio identical. However, they do not do pellets. If a patient wants the pellet therapy, women do the pellet therapy about three to four times a year and men only need it twice to three times a year. They don't have to worry daily about a pill or cream or anything like that. I've been having to refer patients for pellet therapy to surrounding areas. I just wanted to have options for them here. I decided to offer two days a month for now, a weekday[Tuesday], which is my day off at the clinic as I'm still a full-time family practice provider here at Greater Nebraska Medical and Surgical Services in Alliance. And then one weekend day also."

Kelly said this treatment is not a new therapy. Its been around since the 1930's.&nbsp;

"It's been around for a long time, there's plenty of evidence-based research to support it, I'm happy to provide that information," Kelly said. "There are a lot of benefits of hormone therapy. And like I said, there's less risk. It's also being used right now to treat cancer. So, that's pretty interesting. But, some of the benefits are improved sleep, memory increased libido. Some studies actually show a decrease in breast cancer, when your hormones are optimized and balanced. We know that if your testosterone is balanced, you have a decreased risk of prostate cancer. When you go through menopause, you lose the estrogen because your body's not producing it. So, that can lead to osteoporosis. This can prevent osteoporosis. There's been studies that show that women are more prone to Alzheimer's because of a balance and an imbalance in hormones. This can help with that. Stubborn weight gain, hot flashes, depression, joint pain, muscle pain, these are all things that we can work to improve."

"In the darkness, a light shines. An angel appears, the glory of the Lord shines around the shepherds, and finally the message awaited for centuries is heard: 'To you is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.' (Luke 2: 11-12) The angel goes on to say something surprising. He tells the shepherds how to find the God who has come down to earth: 'This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.' That is the sign. A child, a baby lying in the dire poverty of a manger." This is how Pope Francis began his Christmas Eve message last year at St. Peter's Basilica. Of all things, this global religious leader points to poverty and the excluded...at Christmastime?

I recently read the Pope's homily for the last two Christmases. The Pope talked about Jesus's birth, his poverty, the message being shared with the poor, and how we must learn to find God in the little things in life, rather than seeking power and success.

On Christmas Eve, 2020, Pope Francis said, "In the lowly manger of a darkened stable, the Son of God was truly present. Why was he born at night without decent accommodation, in poverty and rejection, when he deserved to be born as the greatest of kings in the finest of palaces? Why? To make us understand the immensity of his love for our human condition: even touching the depths of our poverty with his concrete love. The Son of God was born an outcast, in order to tell us that every outcast is a child of God."

Who were the first to be told of the holy birth? The shepherds. These poor men were in the fields at night to work. They could not live how they wanted or where they wanted; their work was based on the needs of the sheep they tended. They were forgotten, invisible to most people.

"He comes to ennoble the excluded and he first reveals himself to them: not to educated and important people, but to poor working people. God tonight comes to fill with dignity the austerity of labor. He reminds us of the importance of granting dignity to men and women through labor, but also of granting dignity to human labor itself."

"As we take one last look at the crib, in the distance, we glimpse the Magi, journeying to worship the Lord. As we look more closely, we see that all around Jesus everything comes together: not only do we see the poor, the shepherds, but also the learned and the rich, the Magi. In Bethlehem, rich and poor come together, those who worship, like the Magi, and those who work, like the shepherds."

"God came among us in poverty and need, to tell us that in serving the poor, we will show our love for him," said Pope Francis. "If, as in Bethlehem, the darkness of night overwhelms you, if you feel surrounded by cold indifference, if the hurt you carry inside cries out, 'You are of little

account; you are worthless; you will never be loved the way you want,' tonight God answers back. Tonight, he tells you: 'I love you just as you are.'"

It doesn't matter whether we are Catholic, or even religious. These messages from Pope Francis have great power. We need to accept and honor ourselves and each other, regardless of what we perceive as status or weaknesses. Merry Christmas.

Chadron State College is closing its campus Wednesday, Dec. 21 and Thursday, Dec. 22 because of winter weather conditions. Since the Fall semester has concluded, the residence halls and dining services are closed. Chadron State College will begin its Winter Break Friday, Dec. 23, and remain closed until Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023.

The forecast for Chadron calls for bitter cold and some snow this week. According to the National Weather Service, Wind Chill Warnings are in effect for western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming early Wednesday morning through Friday. The National Weather Service predicts that overnight lows on Wednesday night could be as cold as -40 degrees and that this airmass is the coldest to enter the region in decades.

The National Weather Service recommends to limit outdoor exposure and wear warm layers with a hat. Keep your pets indoors and plan ahead for impacts to livestock, vehicles, and any time you spend outside.

Update: Panhandle road closures

The holiday season is full of examples of Nebraskans taking the time to help one another.

Just think of the bells we hear and the red Salvation Army buckets we see at the entrances of the stores where we run our daily errands.&nbsp; The toy drives and free meals offered by organizations like People’s City Mission in Lincoln to Nebraskans who’ve fallen on hard times.&nbsp; Or the clothing donations and the outreach to the lonely and shut-ins that are put on by the diverse communities of faith across our state.

The holiday season is full of examples of Nebraskans taking the time to help one another.&nbsp; But in our state, the spirit of serving others is present year-round.&nbsp; In fact, it’s Nebraskans’ dedication to selflessness that puts the “good” in the Good Life.

At the State, we’ve worked to instill that spirit in the many programs meant to help our neighbors and friends who are struggling.&nbsp; We don’t just want to give Nebraskans temporary relief.&nbsp; We want to equip them with resources and training needed to sustain themselves and their families long-term.&nbsp;

In 2016, we launched SNAP Next Step with the goal of helping Nebraskans participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in their search to find new or better employment.&nbsp; Nebraskans who participate in this program receive job search coaching, interview preparation, and help with resume writing as they pursue financial security.&nbsp; Since the program’s launch, we’ve been able to help 363 Nebraskans complete the program and reach their employment goals.

That’s made a huge difference in their lives.&nbsp; Those who complete SNAP Next Step have an average increase in income of $2,100 a month.&nbsp; That’s more than $25,000 per year.&nbsp; As a result, 60% of these participants are no longer in need of SNAP benefits.&nbsp; And the benefits aren’t just financial, since participants also improve their quality of life.&nbsp; For example, many now work more predictable hours, which allows them to spend more time with their families.&nbsp; This includes a Nebraska woman named April, who credited SNAP Next Step with providing the accountability, structure, and resources needed to complete an Associate’s Degree and find a great job here in the state.

The success of SNAP Next Step has helped us launch another innovative program that helps struggling Nebraskans rise: Ignite Nebraska.

Through Ignite Nebraska, the State has partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) and Bellevue University to offer meaningful career development opportunities for working Nebraskans who are underrepresented in higher-paying, high-impact industries like IT.&nbsp; Participants engage in a paid six-to-nine-month training program, where they learn the skills needed to gain full employment in an in-demand field.&nbsp; Those who complete the program are guaranteed a full-time job.

Ignite Nebraska launched in February 2022 and has since graduated its inaugural class.&nbsp; One of those graduates is Laura Croswell.&nbsp; Laura recently shared her story at an event highlighting the program.&nbsp; In her words, “As a single mom of two, I worked job after job just to put food on the table for my kids.&nbsp; Ignite has allowed me to excel in a career where my pay reflects the talents I’ve developed.&nbsp; Ignite has invested in me and helped me provide my children with financial stability for years to come.”

Pete RickettsThe holiday season is full of examples of Nebraskans taking the time to help one another.Just think of the bells we hear and the red Salvation Army buckets we see at the entrances of the stores where we run our daily errands.&nbsp; The toy drives and free meals offered by organizations like People’s City Mission in Lincoln to Nebraskans who’ve fallen on hard times.&nbsp; Or the clothing donations and the outreach to the lonely and shut-ins that are put on by the diverse communities of faith across our state.The holiday season is full of examples of Nebraskans taking the time to help one another.&nbsp; But in our state, the spirit of serving others is present year-round.&nbsp; In fact, it’s Nebraskans’ dedication to selflessness that puts the “good” in the Good Life.At the State, we’ve worked to instill that spirit in the many programs meant to help our neighbors and friends who are struggling.&nbsp; We don’t just want to give Nebraskans temporary relief.&nbsp; We want to equip them with resources and training needed to sustain themselves and their families long-term.&nbsp;In 2016, we launched SNAP Next Step with the goal of helping Nebraskans participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in their search to find new or better employment.&nbsp; Nebraskans who participate in this program receive job search coaching, interview preparation, and help with resume writing as they pursue financial security.&nbsp; Since the program’s launch, we’ve been able to help 363 Nebraskans complete the program and reach their employment goals.That’s made a huge difference in their lives.&nbsp; Those who complete SNAP Next Step have an average increase in income of $2,100 a month.&nbsp; That’s more than $25,000 per year.&nbsp; As a result, 60% of these participants are no longer in need of SNAP benefits.&nbsp; And the benefits aren’t just financial, since participants also improve their quality of life.&nbsp; For example, many now work more predictable hours, which allows them to spend more time with their families.&nbsp; This includes a Nebraska woman named April, who credited SNAP Next Step with providing the accountability, structure, and resources needed to complete an Associate’s Degree and find a great job here in the state.The success of SNAP Next Step has helped us launch another innovative program that helps struggling Nebraskans rise: Ignite Nebraska.Through Ignite Nebraska, the State has partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) and Bellevue University to offer meaningful career development opportunities for working Nebraskans who are underrepresented in higher-paying, high-impact industries like IT.&nbsp; Participants engage in a paid six-to-nine-month training program, where they learn the skills needed to gain full employment in an in-demand field.&nbsp; Those who complete the program are guaranteed a full-time job.Ignite Nebraska launched in February 2022 and has since graduated its inaugural class.&nbsp; One of those graduates is Laura Croswell.&nbsp; Laura recently shared her story at an event highlighting the program.&nbsp; In her words, “As a single mom of two, I worked job after job just to put food on the table for my kids.&nbsp; Ignite has allowed me to excel in a career where my pay reflects the talents I’ve developed.&nbsp; Ignite has invested in me and helped me provide my children with financial stability for years to come.”While the existing program is focused on developing IT professionals, there is potential to expand the model to other in-demand fields across the state.&nbsp; I encourage any business looking to expand its workforce and help its community to consider taking part in Ignite Nebraska (visit Nebraskablue.com/ignite to learn more).Creating new partnerships and developing innovative models to serve Nebraskans has helped us deliver other meaningful improvements to people across the state year-round.&nbsp; For example:<ul>
 <li>In May, we sought applications for the 2022 Developing Youth Talent Initiative (DYTI) grants.&nbsp; Since 2015, the State has facilitated partnerships between businesses and schools to expose middle schoolers to the rewarding careers we have here in Nebraska.&nbsp; This fall, we announced this year’s DYTI partners: MetalQuest in Hebron and 21st&nbsp;Century Equipment in the panhandle.&nbsp; These companies introduce students to manufacturing, industrial robotics, coding, and precision agriculture.&nbsp; Overall, our DYTI grants have made a difference in the lives of 27,000 students across 66 Nebraska school districts.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>

 <li>In August, we signed a memorandum of understanding with Western Governor’s University.&nbsp; Through this partnership, we are expanding access to affordable, high-quality degree programs for the roughly 306,000 Nebraskans who have some college credits but no bachelor’s degree.&nbsp; This will allow them to take the next step in their careers while continuing to earn a living for their families.</li>

 <li>In November, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Nebraska worked with the State and community partners to announce a $5.4 million, multi-year investment in the Creighton University Community Collaborative Program.&nbsp; That will provide funding to community-based organizations in North and South Omaha to help address the biggest health challenges facing those communities.&nbsp; These and similar investments help target Medicaid dollars to address the needs of Nebraskans in innovative ways.&nbsp;</li>

A very potent cold front will sweep across the area on Wednesday. Dangerous wind chills, coupled with strong winds and snow accumulations will create a flash freeze event.

Temperatures are expected to drop 25 to 40 degrees over the course of 1-2 hours once the cold front moves through your local area.  Temperatures will go from the 30s/40s to below zero in a very short time on Wednesday.

Near record low temperatures are expected Wednesday night for some folks as overnight lows of -20F to -35F are expected, with strong winds of 35-65mph making wind chill values as cold as -40F to potentially -70F Wednesday night. The coldest wind chills are anticipated over the Pine Ridge area. See follow up images for more details. 

This is NOT your typical winter event for the month of December. Please make sure to make the necessary precautions as soon as possible due to the likelihood of serious agricultural and human impacts during this event. This includes bringing in your pets, having your faucets drip overnight, and having structure protection for any livestock that are normally exposed. Arctic cold front to move into Panhandle 

Alliance – The City of Alliance Facilities will be closed Monday, December 26th and Monday, January 2nd in observance of the holidays. This closure includes the Utility Office, Public Works, and the Municipal Building.

The Alliance Public Library, Knight Museum &amp; Sandhills Center, Military Museum and Senior Center will be closed December 24th – 26th and December 31st – January 2nd.

After three days of snow, blowing snow and blizzard conditions last week,&nbsp; Western Nebraska is now facing bitter cold temperatures heading into the Christmas Holiday.&nbsp; 

The Tuesday morning update calls for a Wind Chill Warning,&nbsp; in effect from Wednesday&nbsp; thru Friday morning.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Extremely dangerous and life threatening wind chills are&nbsp; expected, ranging from&nbsp; 55 to 70 degrees below zero.&nbsp; &nbsp; The Weather Service says....Wind chills of this magnitude can cause frostbite in  less than 5 minutes if precautions are not taken. Hypothermia  and death can also occur due to prolonged exposure to the cold.&nbsp; Livestock and pets will also be severely impacted.&nbsp; Daytime high temperatures will range from 10 to 20 degrees with highs falling to below zero by later in the week.&nbsp; Overnight lows will range around -10 to as cold as -30, with&nbsp; very cold wind chills.

Snow is expected again on Wednesday and we could see some blowing snow from mid-day Wednesday through early Saturday.&nbsp; &nbsp;Temperatures are expected to warm up by Saturday.&nbsp; With highs in the mid 20's on Christmas Eve and near 40 on Christmas Day

This includes most counties in Western Nebraska ...Box Butte, Dawes,&nbsp; Scottsbluff, Banner, Morrill, Sioux, Cheyenne, Kimball and parts of Eastern Wyoming.&nbsp;

Dangerous Wind Chills expected throughout the Panhandle this week

Three big game public information meetings planned by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission have been postponed.

These meetings, originally scheduled in December, now are set for January. The schedule for those three:

Jan. 9 – Gordon, Gordon City Auditorium, 311 N. Oak St.&nbsp;

Jan. 11 – Norfolk, Northeast Community College Lifelong Learning Center, 801 E. Benjamin Ave.

Jan. 11 – Oshkosh, Oshkosh Auditorium, 602 W. 2nd&nbsp;St.

Hunters and landowners are encouraged to offer their feedback on big game issues during these three-hour meetings. Each of the three-hour meetings begins at 5 p.m.

3 Nebraska big game meetings rescheduled including Gordon, Oshkosh

The 2022 WESTCO Annual Meeting took place Monday, December 19 at the West Side Events Center in Alliance. The 2023 WESTCO Board of Directors was announced including, front l-r, Scott Schoeneman, Josh Payne, Joe Thompson, Trabor Bauer; back, President/CEO David Briggs, Lynden Smith, Mario Pitts and Tim Campbell.

The 81st Annual Stockholders’ Meeting of Western Cooperative Company (WESTCO) took place Monday, December 19 at the Westside Event Center in Alliance. The event had to be rescheduled from its original date of December 14, due to weather. Over 100 people attended the meeting.

Controller Shawn Nelson presented the financial reports for the 2022 fiscal year, showing the cooperative had $171 million in Sales and generated a Net Savings of $9.7 million.

In the Annual Board Report, Chairman Erik Peterson, of Gering, informed the members that 2022 was WESTCO’s fourth best year in history and the Board approved Equity Redemption for all members age 70 and older. In total, WESTCO is returning $3.2 million in cash back to members, following the Annual Meeting.

President &amp; CEO David Briggs, reviewed the six divisions that serve the members, highlighting many positives for the year, including a record fertilizer volume and the acquisition of the fertilizer facility in Wheatland, Wyoming.

The Board recognized Peterson and Allan Thorson, of Hay Springs, who fulfilled their terms on the Board. Overall, Peterson served on the WESTCO Board of Directors for nine years, while Thorson served for 15 years. In other business, Scott Schoeneman, of Alliance, was re-elected to serve another term, while Mario Pitts of Lyman and Lynden Smith of Hay Springs, were elected to join the Board of Directors.

These orders that force businesses to temporarily limit their shipments and pull some of their railcars off of UP's network caught regulators eye because they are up significantly over the past few years. In 2018, UP used 140 of them, according to the STB.

Members of the STB and companies that rely on railroads to deliver their raw materials and finished products said at last week's two-day hearing that the embargoes disrupt business operations and drive up shipping costs because companies may have to resort to more expensive shipping options, like trucking.

Many businesses are served by only one railroad. Their bulk products may not be well suited to being delivered by trucks, so they don't have many options when Union Pacific imposes limits.

Normally, railroads use embargoes in extreme conditions when something outside their control, like a flood or bridge fire, hurts their ability to haul freight. Business groups, however, say they believe deep cuts in UP’s workforce are a major reason the Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad is having so much trouble meeting customer expectations.

Union Pacific executives argued at the hearing that these temporary limits are needed to help improve the performance of the railroad, but STB Chairman Martin Oberman said they haven't seem to help Union Pacific significantly because its performance statistics still lag behind where they should be.

&nbsp;The Scottsbluff Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure fire in the 700 block of E. 17th Street Saturday night. 

&nbsp;The Scottsbluff Fire Department, with automatic-aid from the Gering Fire Department, were dispatched at 9:53 p.m. to a report of smoke coming from a house. 

&nbsp;"Scottsbluff’s Engine 1 arrived on scene in approximately five minutes and discovered a small fire in the back of the vacant home," Scottsbluff Fire Chief Tom Schingle said. "The fire was quickly extinguished and the smoke removed through ventilation. &nbsp;There were no injuries and crews were on scene for a little over an hour. &nbsp;The fire remains under investigation due to the suspicious nature."

The Scottsbluff Police Department and Valley Ambulance also responded to the scene.&nbsp;

VALENTINE, Neb.-A Valentine police officer was injured after being run over by a front loader.

According to the Cherry County Sheriff's Office, officer Jasmine Hoefs was investigating a scene and assisting Emergency Medical Services on Friday when a front-end loader accidentally ran her over.

Authorities said Hoefs was transported to Cherry County Hospital with serious injuries. Officer Hoefs has undergone multiple surgeries.

The Sheriff's Office said Hoefs has reached out on social media thanking the community and said she appreciates the prayers and good vibes and asked for those to continue.
