On June 19 at approximately 1 p.m. the Chadron Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol and Dawes County Attorney/Coroner were called to investigate the death of 10-month-old Madilynn Lenhart.&nbsp;

"After a review of the scene, witness interviews and consultation with medical personnel, Riley Lenhart, the father of the child, was arrested and charged with child abuse resulting in the death,"&nbsp;Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug said.&nbsp;

Lenhart's bond was set at $750,000.&nbsp;

Haug said the investigation is ongoing at this time.&nbsp;

HERSHEY, Neb.-If you notice smoke near Hershey over the next few days, it's likely controlled burning.

The Hershey Volunteer Fire Department said local irrigation companies will be burning vegetation in ditches beginning Tuesday and wrapping up on Thursday, as conditions allow.

The burning will take place north of Platte Valley Rd., between Lamant Rd. and Game Trail Rd.

The Nebraska Lottery has confirmed that one ticket sold for Saturday’s 2by2 draw matched all four winning numbers for the $22,000 top prize. the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Nebraska’s May employment data.&nbsp; Nebraska’s employment set another record high of 1,042,762. &nbsp;This is the 11th&nbsp;straight month of record employment in the state. &nbsp;Additionally, Nebraska’s unemployment rate remains the lowest in the nation, and in state history, at 1.9 percent. &nbsp;

This growth has contributed to another month of strong State General Fund tax receipts.&nbsp; In May, receipts were over $52 million above forecast.&nbsp; May’s tax receipts put Nebraska on track to have over $1.8 billion in its cash reserve at the end of fiscal year 2023. &nbsp;

“Nebraskans have an unmatched work ethic, which is reflected in our nation-leading labor numbers,” said Gov. Trout in the Classroom, a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission educational opportunity for schools, is now accepting applications for the 2022-23 school year.

The interdisciplinary, science-based program invites classrooms to explore aquatic ecosystems, life cycles, water quality and the scientific process through raising trout eggs in their classroom. Students learn about life science, watersheds, data collection and analysis over the course of the spring semester.

Applications to participate in the program are due Aug. 31. Teachers who participate in the program are trained and provided curriculum that meets educational standards set by Nebraska. Nebraska Game and Parks also provides troubleshooting support throughout the program.

The course is capped by a field trip where students get to release the fish they’ve raised in a nearby waterbody.

Events will continue through the end of June, including Youth Book Club for grades 3-6 on Tuesday, June 28th from 4:30-5:30 pm sharing discussion of “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson. Thunderstorm Warnings issued for Western Nebraska - June 20 Updated

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved staff recommendations for 2023 mountain lion season at its June 17 meeting in Lexington.

Commissioners approved a mountain lion season in the Pine Ridge similar to 2022, with a maximum harvest of four cats, with a sublimit of two females. The number of permits issued via lottery will be lowered from 320 to 200. This change is an effort to boost hunter satisfaction by increasing the probability of a longer season. The harvest objective is to allow the mountain lion population to remain resilient and healthy, while halting growth or moderately reducing the population size. The most recent estimate for the Pine Ridge population from the 2021 genetic survey is 33 mountain lions.

The Commission also approved a 2022 river otter trapping season. The season will be Nov. 1, 2022, through Feb. 28, 2023, or close earlier once 125 otters have been harvested, all other checking requirements will remain the same as last year.

The commissioners also approved changes to sport fishing regulations that remove grass carp from the list of species that is unlaw to possess or transport. This eliminates a conflict, as grass carp is legal to sell and stock in private waters. Another change amended the list of water bodies where live baitfish may be possessed or used. It is unlawful to possess live fish other than fish legally harvested from the water body. This is to minimize the risk of introduction of invasive fish into new or renovated waters.

Commissioners rejected staff recommendations for a 2023 wild turkey season. Recommended changes to regulations and orders, if approved, would have reduced the spring season personal permit limit from three to two, lowered the fall bag limit from two to one, shortened the fall season to Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, and required all turkeys be checked via phone or internet beginning with the spring 2023 season. The commissioners recommended a public hearing on the matter in the August Commission meeting.

Wildlife biologist Bob Meduna was recognized for his 45 years of service to Game and Parks.

Users of the Main Ramp Area at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area should be aware of repairs there June 22-24 that will result in temporary closures.

Water draining from the pull-through near the ramp area has caused erosion undermining the sidewalk attached to the boat ramp, and immediate repairs are needed.

The boat ramp will be closed temporarily while concrete deliveries are being made. These closures will be brief, and the ramp will open once the delivery is complete.

Boaters may arrive at the ramp and find their boat launching is delayed. Once the work is complete, repaired areas will be marked with traffic cones while the materials are setting. Visitors should not disturb these areas.

Other boat ramps available at Merritt are at Beeds Landing and Powderhorn.

Funding for the repairs is made possible through the Capital Maintenance Funds and Sportfish Restoration Motorboat Access Funds.

Alliance police seek community's help in park vandalisms 

Law Enforcement has been attempting to locate Lance Eugene Gibbons since he failed to appear for sentencing in April this year for for several serious felony charges.

On Thursday, June 16, a Scotts Bluff County Deputy observed Gibbons at a rural Minatare residence on Highland Road.&nbsp; The Deputy believed that Gibbons entered the house.&nbsp; A second Deputy arrived 8 minutes later.&nbsp; Deputies believed that Gibbons was inside the house, and there was no one else there.&nbsp; Due to Gibbons’ extensive criminal history and possession of firearms, the Scotts Bluff County SWAT team and other officers responded to assist.&nbsp; 

Following the issuance of a search warrant, the SWAT team eventually entered and searched the residence.&nbsp; Gibbons was not located, and it’s believed he was able to escape unnoticed before the second Deputy arrived.

Other responding agencies included the Nebraska State Patrol, WING Task Force, Scottsbluff, Gering, Mitchell and Minatare Police Departments, the Minatare/Melbeta Volunteer Fire Department, and Valley Ambulance Service.

We are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Lance Gibbons.&nbsp;

The charges he failed to appear for include Terroristic Threats, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Tampering with Physical Evidence.

Law enforcement seek public's help locating fugitive

Workers have begun a project to improve a stream and its banks at Bordeaux Creek Wildlife Management Area near Chadron.

Brett Roberg, a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission fisheries biologist, said the project on Big Bordeaux Creek is expected to increase stream-angling opportunities, provide cleaner water and increase resilience to drought and flooding.

The project’s primary goal is to regrade a floodplain along the creek to safeguard the active stream channel during times of high water and improve recreational access for anglers. Rocks, trees and other natural materials will be positioned in the stream to diversify habitat for both trout and native fish.

“Given the limited number of cool-water streams that fall on public lands in Nebraska, our project team recognized the need for enhancing and conserving the diversity of habitats found at Bordeaux Creek WMA,” Roberg said. “Stream access and high-quality habitats had been previously limited by the vertical stream banks and elevated erosion, causing a decrease in water quality and a reduction in the desirable habitats for fish.”

Upon completion, anglers will find many fewer obstacles to casting a line along the creek. Areas along the stream also will be reseeded with a diverse mixture of native grasses and supplemented with trees and shrubs. The improvements are expected to damper stream bank erosion and expand the riparian buffer to further improve water quality.

Leading up to the habitat improvements, Game and Parks employees and volunteers tagged about 1,000 fish within the wildlife area and will assess how they respond to the new habitat conditions with follow-up surveys.

The Bordeaux Creek project is part of Game and Parks’ comprehensive Cool Water Stream Management Plan, which strives to support productive and sustainable populations of aquatic life, have healthy riparian zones and clean water, and contribute to watershed stability. Roberg said the project will serve as an exemplary demonstration site for stewardship and sustainability when it is completed.

The project is likely to be finished by the end of the year. It is being funded by proceeds of the Aquatic Habitat Stamp, which is included in the purchase of fishing permits, and a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

Big Bordeaux Creek, which originates from springs in the Pine Ridge, meanders northward through a 1-mile section at the west end of the 1,915-acre wildlife area before later merging with Little Bordeaux Creek and the White River. The section of creek is about 3 miles east of Chadron.

Stream renovation underway at Bordeaux Creek WMA near Chadron

SCOTTSBLUFF — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a New York man following a crash that claimed the life of a Scottsbluff woman late Saturday evening.

At approximately 11:15 p.m. MT, NSP was called to a report of a fatality crash at mile marker 83 on Interstate 80. Preliminary investigation shows that a Dodge Caravan was traveling westbound when it was struck from behind by a truck tractor/semi-trailer.

The collision caused the Caravan to roll, ejecting a front-seat passenger. That passenger has been identified as Haroldene Rodriguez, 55, of Scottsbluff. Rodriguez was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, Leopoldo Rodriguez, 43, and two rear-seat, child passengers were transported to Sidney Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi, Atinder Singh, 30, of Bellerose, New York, was not injured. Singh was arrested for motor vehicle homicide and careless driving. He was lodged in Cheyenne County Jail. The crash remains under investigation.

Nebraska big game draw permit application period continues through June 24

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill designed to prevent a surge of new casinos throughout Nebraska cleared a key hurdle Tuesday in the Legislature.

The Legislature’s General Affairs Committee advanced a measure that would allow casinos in the six Nebraska counties that already have licensed horseracing tracks.

Anyone who wants to build a casino in another part of the state would have to wait for the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission to conduct a detailed study looking at the potential impact on the state. The commission would approve or deny licenses based on its analysis.

Sen. Tom Briese, the committee’s chairman, said the measure seeks to strike a balance between developers and communities who want to build casinos and gambling opponents who worry about casinos saturating the state. Earlier proposals would have put specific limits on the number of casinos and the distance between locations.

“I think we’ve truly reached a middle ground on this,” said Briese of Albion.

The counties with existing tracks are all in eastern and central Nebraska. They are Douglas, Lancaster, Adams, Dakota, Hall, and Platte.

The bill comes after Nebraska voters legalized casino gambling in 2020 through a ballot measure bankrolled by Ho-Chunk Inc., the economic development arm of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. It allowed casinos at horse racing tracks.

The measure now heads to the full Legislature for debate.

Nebraska rushes to build horse tracks despite few fans

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have located a missing 13-year-old girl from Indiana and arrested a Colorado man following a traffic stop on Interstate 80 Wednesday.

Wednesday afternoon, NSP was notified by the Lafayette, Indiana Police Department that the missing girl was believed to be traveling through Nebraska with an adult man. Approximately 20 minutes later, a trooper located the suspect vehicle, a Ford F-150, as it was traveling westbound on I-80 near Kearney. The trooper performed a traffic stop on the vehicle.

During the traffic stop, the trooper located the girl hiding in the pickup. The driver, Kyle Miotke, 20, of Elizabeth, Colorado, was arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and NSP continued the investigation.

On Thursday, the Lafayette Police Department acquired an arrest warrant for Miotke on several additional charges, including promotion of sexual trafficking of a younger child, kidnapping a victim less than 14 years of age, performing sexual conduct in the presence of a minor, inappropriate communication with a child via electronic device, and dissemination of matter harmful to minors. Troopers notified Miotke of the additional charges Thursday. He was lodged in Buffalo County Jail.

The Alliance Police Department is seeking assistance from the public for a recent burglary.&nbsp; Sometime between June 9th and 10th,&nbsp; The Alliance Spartans Baseball Concession Stand,&nbsp; at Bower/Shankland Field,&nbsp; was burglarized.&nbsp; The thieves gained entry into the concession stand by breaking in through a locked door.&nbsp; &nbsp;Multiple items were stolen, including a large amount of candy,&nbsp; snack items,&nbsp; hamburger and Spartan Baseball paraphernalia.&nbsp; Damage was also done to the inside of the building and an air conditioner was destroyed.&nbsp;

APD seeks help in Spartan Concession Stand burglary

This one-day workshop, put on by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies and Audubon Rockies and co-sponsored by the UNL Extension, will feature Dallas Mount from the widely popular seven-day Ranching for Profit School. This workshop will cover techniques that will help increase the profitability of your ranch, grazing principles and how to apply them, and how to improve the health and productivity of your land. Check-in will start at 8:30am where coffee and refreshments will be served, followed by a classroom lesson and discussion, a catered lunch, and a field component at a local ranch with a soft ending at 3:30pm. Registration is $20 and is required for attendance. Registration deadline is June 23rd. Please pay in advance of the workshop.
