OMAHA — Long gone are the “wild, wild West” days when families loaded up their station wagons and could only pray their vacation route would not be disrupted by car accidents or storms, John Selmer, Nebraska’s director of transportation, said Tuesday.

He said technological breakthroughs have increased information available to Nebraska travelers today. A state transportation team, for instance, now monitors nearly 380 cameras and updates 330 message boards along state roadways to help get motorists to their destinations safely and efficiently.

Gov. Pete Ricketts and Selmer announced a change Tuesday that is expected to make the journey through Nebraska even smoother.

A new State Operations Center, at 4411 S. 108th St., has been formed to create one centralized command center that monitors the state highway network. Previously, those functions were split between offices in Lincoln and Omaha.

Hours will be expanded to create an around-the-clock system in which a team of about 10 workers watch roadways as they are reflected through the network of cameras and onto a wall of video screens. Those same workers receive and dispatch relevant information from and to partner agencies to help smooth traffic flow and avert or control catastrophes.

Ricketts and Selmer said the enhancements for travelers and motorists will come mostly through streamlining, and without any added cost to taxpayers.

As traffic overall continues to increase, Ricketts said, so has the need for consistent management of the roadway network that Nebraskans use daily for commerce, commuting, school and recreation.

“Providing timely information helps drivers make smart decisions behind the wheel so they can stay safe and avoid traffic,” he said.

Selmer said “communication is vital.” He noted that the state operations center team, now working at one site, shares relevant information with law enforcement and other agencies that help keep traffic moving and clear roads of hazards that can range from fatal pileup crashes to a runaway tire.

The team also feeds information to various travel social media and outreach tools including Nebraska 511, a website that shows road closures and conditions, construction and detour information.

“This center will be a hub in making sure that not only our local partners have the information they need to coordinate with us but to educate or provide information to the traveling public,” said Selmer.

He said the operations center is on alert and prepared to respond to traffic needs and emergencies during big events such as the upcoming College World Series, which starts Friday.&nbsp;

“There is nothing worse than to come up on an incident unawares and where you wish you could have taken that exit just prior to the incident,” Selmer said.

Located in an existing state office building, the central hub has been 20 years in the making, said manager Jessica Sherwood.

Two decades ago, she said, one person took calls and updated the 511 system while relying on people in eight districts working on call on evenings and weekends. Initially the district centers did not operate on a full-time basis and activated for major crashes or weather events in their areas.

“Today we are here for that next phase of evolution,” Sherwood said.

Selmer said his goal for the Nebraska Department of Transportation and the operations center is to provide even more predictive information.

He’d like systems to read road conditions and not only inform Nebraskans of conditions in their path, but also to suggest alternative days or hours to travel.&nbsp;

“It’s an interesting time to be in transportation,” he said. “There are a lot of things around the corner.”

Nebraska motorists expected to benefit from newly merged command hub

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts and his wife have tested positive for COVID-19. 

The Republican governor revealed the development in a brief statement issued Wednesday morning and said both he and his wife, Susanne Shore, “are experiencing very minor symptoms." 

The statement said both will self-isolate in accordance with guidelines issued by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

A spokesman for Ricketts did not immediately respond to questions about when the governor tested positive or how long he and his wife plan to isolate.

Box Butte County Sheriff Tammy Mowry is advising motorists,  driving on Highway 385 between Alliance and Angora,  to please use caution. There are a lot of construction vehicles that are moving on and off the highway, along with road construction in the Angora area,&nbsp; and with the high winds and other activity, it is causing a lot of blowing dust.&nbsp; &nbsp;In some places it is almost a brownout with all the dirt in the air,   causing very low visibility.   Sheriff Mowry is urging drivers to slow down and proceed with caution in these areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Weather forecast for the next several days is calling for windy conditions to continue, with westerly-northwesterly winds from 15-40 mph.&nbsp;

Blowing Dust causing brownout conditions on Highway 385

The Nebraska State Patrol can now identify the two people killed in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon near Angora on Highway 385. The driver of the other vehicle has been arrested for motor vehicle homicide.

The crash occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. MT Tuesday. Preliminary investigation shows that a southbound dump truck was attempting enter a construction site on Highway 385, when the driver failed the yield the right of way to a northbound Ford F-350. The dump truck entered the northbound lane causing a collision with the F-350. The dump truck was loaded with wet cement at the time of the crash.

The driver and rear-seat passenger of the F-350 were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver has been identified as Charles Dueker, 79, and the rear-seat passenger has been identified as Linda Dueker, 78. The Duekers’ son, Bruce Dueker, 56, was the front-seat passenger in the pickup. He has been treated and released from the hospital after suffering non-life-threatening injuries. All three are from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The driver of the dump truck, Aldo Hernandez-Meza, 31, of Mexico, was transported to Morrill County Hospital for minor injuries. Once released from the hospital, he was arrested for motor vehicle homicide and failure to yield the right of way. He has been lodged in Morrill County Jail.

The crash remains under investigation. The Morrill County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

More students utilized the Chadron State College Food Pantry during the 2021-22 academic year, according to Project Coordinator Kate Pope. A total of 847 bags, each containing about $20 of groceries, was distributed 11 times, serving 1,347 students. This was an increase from 518 bags serving 739 students the previous year.

“The increase in students using the Food Pantry solidifies the need for this resource on campus,” Pope said.

The Food Pantry moved into a dedicated space in the King Library and received increased support from various campus and community entities. With the funds Pope was able to purchase shelving to store food and a refrigerator for fresh produce, meat, and dairy products.

“The students have been impressed with the variety of fresh produce we’ve been able to offer. In the winter, the Community Cares Program grant from Northwest Community Action Partnership provided meats and dairy products, and the students were very appreciative,” Pope said.

The Food Pantry offers students either self-service or pre-packaged bags including canned fruits, vegetables, and soup, peanut butter, pasta, and a box of cereal. Fresh produce for students selecting either type of service includes three vegetables and three fruits.

During Fall 2021, several students mentioned the bags weren’t enough to get through a full month so Pope added a question to a Food Pantry Form asking if the service should be offered twice a month. When 60 percent voted in favor of the option, Pope offered a bi-weekly Food Pantry in the Spring 2022 semester.

The Food Pantry Committee, after conducting research into food pantries on other campuses, decided to start stocking personal hygiene products in the pantry in December, an addition which was well-received, according to Pope. Another area of&nbsp;expansion requested by students with food allergies was the addition of gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian options which Pope attempts to provide when the items are available.

Pope said anonymous online student comments include expressions of gratitude and praise for the project.

“This is amazing and I am so thankful for this because I do not have a lot of money and this helps me. I think the choices are exactly what’s needed. You are doing amazing,” one student wrote.

During the summer of 2022, Pope will purchase additional shelving, storage containers, and reusable bags. Student Senate has approved $12,000 in support of the Food Pantry for 2022-23.

One person has been arrested following a crash that took the lives of two people Tuesday afternoon near Angora.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Driver arrested in crash that killed 2 near Angora

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A federal judge in Nebraska removed a major obstacle for activists who want to legalize medical marijuana via a ballot campaign, ruling that petition circulators no longer have to gather signatures from at least 5% of voters in 38 or more counties.

U.S. District Judge John Gerrard issued an order Monday to temporarily bar the state from enforcing the requirement, which is enshrined in the Nebraska Constitution, to guarantee at least some buy-in from rural voters before an issue can appear on a statewide ballot.

The ruling comes at a critical time for medical marijuana supporters, who have until July 7 to submit at least 87,000 valid signatures on each of two petitions to Nebraska’s secretary of state. The campaign began with strong prospects but has struggled a bit since one of its biggest donors died, forcing organizers to rely primarily on volunteers.

In a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-health-lawsuits-marijuana-c9fcbb909eb10bda45bdfbc0565f7c65">lawsuit</a>, Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana and the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska argued that the requirement violates free speech and equal protection rights by making some voters’ signatures more valuable than others. They argued that, for signature gathering purposes, one voter in sparsely populated Arthur County is equal to 1,216 voters in Douglas County, which includes Omaha.

The case was initially referred to NSP by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office. Investigators developed information that Polly Olson, 59, who serves as the Deuel County Clerk, had purchased more than $18,000 worth of personal items from various retailers using an official Deuel County credit card.

An arrest warrant was issued for Olson on Tuesday, June 14. Troopers arrested Olson a short time later without incident. She has been lodged in Garden County Jail for theft by unlawful taking.

United Way of Western Nebraska announced today that it has received an AmeriCorps Seniors demonstration grant of $299,158 from the AmeriCorps federal agency to support 320 volunteers serving in Scotts Bluff County. The grant will expand United Way of Western Nebraska’s volunteer presence in the area, where United Way has been providing service opportunities since 1945.

United Way of Western Nebraska in partnership with the Scotts Bluff County Volunteer Center will work to provide volunteer opportunities in the Scotts Bluff County Area. Shanna Halstead, current Executive Director of the Scotts Bluff County Volunteer Center, will serve as the United Way AmeriCorps Seniors Director.

“United Way is grateful for the AmeriCorps Seniors funding award and the opportunity to partner with the Scotts Bluff County Volunteer Center to support and provide expanded volunteer service in the Scotts Bluff Area,” noted Karen Benzel, United Way of Western Nebraska Executive Director. “United Way has a longstanding history of supporting our partner agencies and this grant award will allow United Way in partnership with the Scotts Bluff County Volunteer Center to serve the community through direct volunteerism focused on health, education and financial stability.”

With this new funding, United Way of Western Nebraska in partnership with the Scotts Bluff County Volunteer Center will leverage the skills and experience of seniors in Scotts Bluff County with volunteer activities that focus on health, education and financial stability. These AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers will serve at Shopping for Seniors, Meals on Wheels, home delivered commodities and continue to meet the needs of the community.

Two hundred forty-six years ago, our Founding Fathers bravely defied the most powerful nation on earth and put pen to paper to assert an eternal, self-evident truth: All men are created equal.&nbsp; We are endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights that no government can justly take away.&nbsp; This recognition is what makes our country so unique.&nbsp; What unites us as Americans is neither religion, ancestry, nor language.&nbsp; Rather, it’s our shared commitment to the truth of equal human dignity.&nbsp; Every Independence Day, we honor the men and women who started the great American experiment all those years ago.&nbsp; And we celebrate the triumph of the principles we hold dear.&nbsp; America is at its best when we honor our founding principles; our greatest suffering and division have come from neglecting them.

In addition to celebrating Independence Day, this summer is a time to rejoice in the “new birth of freedom” that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed during his Gettysburg Address in 1863.&nbsp; In that famous speech, he looked forward to an American Republic no longer stained by slavery, with renewed “dedication to the proposition that all men are created equal.”&nbsp; Seventeen months after his speech, the Union Army won the war, bringing slavery to an end.

On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation and the North’s victory in the Civil War reached Galveston, Texas, sparking celebrations as enslaved Americans received word of their freedom.&nbsp; Juneteenth commemorates this day of joy and the end of slavery.

It's a day we should all celebrate. &nbsp;Slavery is the gravest blight on our nation’s history. &nbsp;Its existence was completely contrary to our cornerstone belief that all men are created equal.

As Frederick Douglass reminded Americans, “The principles contained in the Declaration of Independence are saving principles. &nbsp;Stand by those principles, be true to them on all occasions, in all places, against all foes, and at whatever cost.”

Since before we became a state, Nebraskans have bravely sacrificed to uphold our nation’s founding principle of equality. &nbsp;The First Nebraska Regiment fought valiantly in the Union Army during the Civil War, helping to win a major battle at Fort Donelson, Tennessee in 1862.&nbsp; These volunteer soldiers helped the North triumph over the Confederacy and put an end to slavery.

Our state’s courageous patriots include generations of Black Nebraskans, who have given their lives to protect our country and its noblest ideals.&nbsp; Alfonza Davis of Omaha was a Tuskegee Airman in World War II. &nbsp;He served as a military aviator, protecting American bombers and striking Nazi targets across Europe.&nbsp; He made the ultimate sacrifice in October 1944 while flying over Italy. &nbsp;Davis Middle School in Omaha is named in his honor.&nbsp;

Petty Officer 1st Class Charles Jackson French, an Omaha resident, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.&nbsp; He was aboard the USS Gregory when it was sunk by Japanese ships during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942.&nbsp; French ended up in the water, unhurt.&nbsp; He swam among the wreckage, helping 15 wounded U.S. sailors onto a raft. &nbsp;With the tide pulling the raft toward a shore occupied by Japanese troops, French tied a rope to his waist and personally towed the raft out to sea.&nbsp; In a feat of heroic endurance, he swam more than six hours until the sailors were rescued.&nbsp; To recognize him, Congress recently passed legislation sponsored by Nebraska Representative Don Bacon (CD-2) to rename the post office at 6223 Maple Street in Omaha’s Benson neighborhood as the “Petty Officer 1st Class Charles Jackson French Post Office.”

In the Vietnam War, Black Nebraskans served with distinction.&nbsp; James Prater received a Bronze Star in 1966.&nbsp; Blaine Wilson was awarded with the Air Force Commendation Medal in 1967.&nbsp; Omaha Central grad Milton Ross made the ultimate sacrifice in 1969 at the age of 20, only one month after entering service.&nbsp; He was honored with a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.&nbsp; Porter Pittman spent 26 months in Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart.&nbsp; Maurice Craddock was a decorated serviceman, receiving a National Defense Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Purple Heart.&nbsp; In the midst of the civil rights tensions of the 1960s, these young Black men from Omaha courageously heeded the call of duty to serve their country.

Staff Sergeant Lillian Clamens joined the U.S. Army Reserve after graduating from Omaha Central in 1990.&nbsp; During a mortar attack in Iraq in 2007, she sacrificed her life to shield a fellow soldier from harm.&nbsp; In March, the City of Omaha renamed a street in memory of her.

This summer, let’s give thanks for our nation’s founding principles as we light off fireworks on the Fourth of July.&nbsp; On Juneteenth, let’s celebrate the triumph of our founding truths over slavery. &nbsp;Let’s also honor the many Black heroes throughout our history who have fought so these principles could endure.&nbsp;

America is at its best when we honor our founding principles; our greatest suffering and division have come from neglecting them.In addition to celebrating Independence Day, this summer is a time to rejoice in the “new birth of freedom” that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed during his Gettysburg Address in 1863.&nbsp; In that famous speech, he looked forward to an American Republic no longer stained by slavery, with renewed “dedication to the proposition that all men are created equal.”&nbsp; Seventeen months after his speech, the Union Army won the war, bringing slavery to an end.On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation and the North’s victory in the Civil War reached Galveston, Texas, sparking celebrations as enslaved Americans received word of their freedom.&nbsp; RSVP (the Retired &amp; Senior Volunteer Program) in conjunction with the Community Services Program at Northwest Community Action Partnership (NCAP) will sponsor a Drive Thru Mobile Food Pantry with the Food Bank of the Heartland on June 21st, 2022 at the Dawes County Fairgrounds from 5 pm to 7:00 pm. The Fairgrounds are located at 2009 East Gordon Avenue in Chadron. No need to bring boxes -volunteers will load the food in your vehicle. To help ensure equal access, one distribution per car, per trip, please.

Any household in need is welcome to come and get food from the food pantry. If you need delivery because you lack transportation or are medically vulnerable, call 432-3393.

NCAP serves low income residents by providing food supports, emergency services such as utility bill assistance, rental assistance, mortgage assistance, and other needs in Dawes County. RSVP/NCAP Mobile Food Pantry in Chadron June 21

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, co-chairperson of the Republican Governors Association and a pro-gun rights and anti-abortion conservative, has canceled his planned appearance in Connecticut on Tuesday at a fundraising event for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Stefanowski.

Liz Kurantowicz, Stefanowski’s senior advisor, said Monday that Ricketts “had a scheduling conflict” and cannot attend. The event, however, will still take place at a residence in Canton without Ricketts, she said.

A message was left seeking comment with Ricketts’ media spokesperson. An official schedule shows he has a news conference on Tuesday in Nebraska to discuss the opening of a state transportation operations center and “out-of-state travel” commitments for the rest of the week.

Ricketts’ planned appearance, first announced last month, has drawn criticism from state Democrats who labeled the Nebraska governor an “extremist” and questioned why Stefanowski would want to host a governor who said he&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-supreme-court-legislature-nebraska-pete-ricketts-filibusters-354c7f9cec85d71f34d3898206fc9841">wants his state to outlaw abortion</a>&nbsp;if Roe v. Wade is overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. The planned visit prompted local Democrats to organize a “Rally for Choice and Gun Safety” at a school that’s near the fundraiser.

Katie Kenny, chair of the Canton Democratic Town Committee, said Monday the group still plans to hold its rally even though Ricketts won’t be coming.

“I believe that they thought that they could play a double game, where they’re saying that they’re moderate on these issues, but simultaneously raising money off bringing someone who is basically red meat for their base and who would fire people up and get people to donate a lot to Stefanowski,” she said. “And when they got caught, they backed out.”

Asked whether the planned protest had anything to do with Rickett’s cancellation, Kurantowicz repeated her earlier, brief statement about the governor having a scheduling conflict.

As a Republican in Connecticut, a state more politically liberal, Stefanowski has taken nuanced positions on some hot-button social issues. For example, on abortion, Stefanowski said last month he would not attempt to change existing Connecticut law — the state codified Roe in state law in 1990 — but thought the state “should consider” legislation that would impose a parental notification requirement for minors under age 16, except in cases of rape or incest.

Endorsed by the National Rifle Association in 2018 when he last ran for governor, Stefanowski this month said he’s “committed to enforce the existing Connecticut gun laws, they’re strongest in the nation.” But he noted, “I don’t think we should be talking about a lot of changes right now until we enforce what we have.”

Nebraska governor nixes Connecticut appearance amid protests

&nbsp;The Chadron Police Department raised awareness about seat belt safety to area residents during its annual Click It or Ticket high-visibility seat belt enforcement campaign, held May 23 through June 5.&nbsp; 

Law enforcement officers wrote a total of 4 citations for seat belt violations in the process.&nbsp; The campaign, which coincided with the Memorial Day holiday, was twofold:&nbsp; to combine increased enforcement and a zero-tolerance policy, with effective communication to road users on the importance of seat belt use. 

On May 23, the campaign commenced with Border to Border, a one-day, 4-hour national seat belt awareness event coordinated by participating state highway safety offices and their respective law enforcement liaisons. “This year’s Click It or Ticket campaign was a real success,” said Sergeant Chet Swanson.&nbsp; “Through our enforcement efforts, we believe we helped keep community members safe and reminded drivers of the importance of buckling up.&nbsp; Issuing tickets was not our goal, but it was a way to remind people of the importance of such a simple action.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than half of the passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2020 were unrestrained.&nbsp; During this year’s campaign, NHTSA urged law enforcement nationwide to issue seat belt citations to anyone caught in violation of the law — during the day, and especially at night, when 58% of those killed are unrestrained.&nbsp; By adding patrols at night, and training officers on specific techniques to catch nighttime violators, the campaign — and the nighttime focus — was a “major success,” according to Sergeant Chet Swanson.

The Chadron Police Department had 8 officers participate in the campaign.&nbsp; Each officer was assigned to work 4 hours towards the campaign from May 23 to June 5.&nbsp; Each officer worked their 4 hour block on different days and at different times of the day.&nbsp; During this time a total of 44 traffic stops were made resulting in 11 citations being issued, 4 of which were seatbelt violations.&nbsp; Another observational study was conducted in the City of Chadron after the campaign had concluded,&nbsp; and it was found 62% of the observed motorists were wearing restraints. A 2% increase from before the campaign.

The national seat belt use rate in 2020 was 90.3%.&nbsp; The Click It or Ticket campaign is focusing on the remaining 9.7% who still don’t buckle up. Thousands of lives could be saved each year if every person was properly restrained on the road.

2022 Click it or Ticket Campaign

At their regular monthly meeting,&nbsp; Alliance American Legion Post 7, honored local Legionaire Tom Hoerler as the 2022 , American Legion Eagle award winner in recognition of his outstanding dedication and tireless service to military veterans and the American Legion.&nbsp;

Post Commander Steve Stanec, says&nbsp; "Tom has been a loyal, continuous member of the Alliance American Legion Post 7 for 16 years and currently serves as Sgt-at-Arms, insuring the honor guard rifles and color guard ceremonial rifles are ready for service at all scheduled events."&nbsp; &nbsp;"Tom also serves as the Posts Bugler on the honor guard team at veterans funerals and other occasions when the bugle is requested."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tom is a consistent participant in the Quilt of Valor Foundation presentations honoring our local veterans and is a recipient himself. He also volunteers to serve on multiple committees.

Tom is a past American Legion Post 7 Commander and Adjutant, as well as a past American Legion District 4 Adjutant/Financial Officer. He is also a past recipiant of the American Legion District 4 Work Horse Award and District 4 Citizenship Award.

Local Legionaire Honored

June 12, 2012 is a date that is hard to forget for most Alliance residents.

The day began like any other, but just before 9:00am Andres Gonzalez walked into Thiele Pharmacy and Gifts.  Police were soon called to the store in response to reports of a robbery.  Upon their arrival Gonzalez shot and wounded Alliance Police Department officer Kirk Felker.  At 10:30am, Gonzalez again traded gunfire with officers, wounding Nebraska state trooper Tim Flick and APD officer Matt Shannon.

At approxmately 4:30pm, after hours of being held hostage by Gonzalez, Thiele Pharmacy owner Charles Lierk, then 62, made his escape from the pharmacy.  Lierk was shot in the back and arm as he ran to safety.  Gonzalez died later that day following a gun battle inside the pharmacy with Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team members.  On that same day officers discovered the body of Gonzalez' father, 62-year-old Larry Gonzalez, in the family's home.

Then KCOW Radio News Director Kevin Horn spent the morning of the 12th downtown, phoning in live reports for broadcast on KCOW.  Also downtown behind locked doors were local business owners stunned at the scene unfolding.  Kelly Crawford of Just Shoot Me Photographics captured the sights of the day in the photographs used in this article.

In the ten years since June 12, 2012 the face of downtown Alliance has changed in some big ways.  Workforce Development, with offices adjacent to Thieles, eventually re-opened their doors.  Years later, Workforce Development would relocate to the lower level of the Alliance Learning Center, and eventually merge with Workforce Development's Scottsbluff operation.

Following the events of June 12, 2012, the Lierks briefly relocated their pharmacy business to a storefront near Box Butte General Hospital.  Later that year, the Lierks executed their plans to sell the pharmacy business to Safeway--plans that were in the early stages before the standoff.  The downtown location reopened as "Thiele Gifts and More".  In 2016, the Lierks announced their retirement and with it, the closure of their business.  It brought to an end over a century of a Thiele storefront in downtown Alliance.

The events of April 12, 2012 are unforgettable to any Alliance resident who was here when it happened.  Perhaps that's because an incident like this is so exceedingly rare in small towns like Alliance, Nebraska.  The day was won by the bravery and skill of both Alliance Police Department officers and those from the Nebraska State Patrol.  They went forward into an incredibly dangerous situation and preserved the peace of our town and its people.

June 12, 2012 is a date that is hard to forget for most Alliance residents.The day began like any other, but just before 9:00am Andres Gonzalez walked into Thiele Pharmacy and Gifts. Police were soon called to the store in response to reports of a robbery. Upon their arrival Gonzalez shot and wounded Alliance Police Department officer Kirk Felker. At 10:30am, Gonzalez again traded gunfire with officers, wounding Nebraska state trooper Tim Flick and APD officer Matt Shannon.<figure>

 </figure>At approxmately 4:30pm, after hours of being held hostage by Gonzalez, Thiele Pharmacy owner Charles Lierk, then 62, made his escape from the pharmacy. Lierk was shot in the back and arm as he ran to safety. Gonzalez died later that day following a gun battle inside the pharmacy with Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team members. On that same day officers discovered the body of Gonzalez' father, 62-year-old Larry Gonzalez, in the family's home.<figure>

Also downtown behind locked doors were local business owners stunned at the scene unfolding.  </figure>In the ten years since June 12, 2012 the face of downtown Alliance has changed in some big ways. Workforce Development, with offices adjacent to Thieles, eventually re-opened their doors. Years later, Workforce Development would relocate to the lower level of the Alliance Learning Center, and eventually merge with Workforce Development's Scottsbluff operation.<figure>

It is based on data gathered by and calculations made by Gary Stone, Nebraska Extension educator, and Dr. Xin Qiao, Extension Irrigation and Water Management Specialist, both based at the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottsbluff.

Crop water use will vary across the Panhandle due to variation in temperature and precipitation events.

Another round of severe weather hit Western Nebraska Sunday afternoon.&nbsp; Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Scottsbluff and Sioux counties along with Goshen county,&nbsp; Wyoming around 3:45 pm MT.&nbsp; The storms moved east/northeast around 30- 40 mph.&nbsp; &nbsp;A tornado warning was issued for Scottsbluff and Sioux county&nbsp; around 5:20 pm MT with radar indicated rotation.&nbsp; No reports of any funnel clouds.

 Thunderstorm warnings were also issued for Morrill, Kimball, Cheyenne, Garden and Sheridan counties.&nbsp; Very little rainfall has been reported, but strong gusty winds toppled center pivots and some power outages were reported in Box Butte County.&nbsp;

Wind gusts near 50 mph were reported at the Chadron Airport.&nbsp; The Alliance Airport reported a trace of rain and wind gusts up to 40 mph. The severe weather had moved out of the Panhandle by 8 pm MT.&nbsp; The forcast for the rest of the week calls for hot conditions Monday with possible record high&nbsp; temps in the upper 90's.&nbsp; The next chance of rain in the region is Tuesday night.&nbsp;

Morrill County law enforcement and the Nebraska State Patrol are continuing to investigate a 2 car crash that claimed the life of a Sidney man Saturday.&nbsp; 

According to Nebraska State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas,&nbsp; the accident ocurred at approximately 4:20 pm MT Saturday&nbsp; just west of Bridgeport .&nbsp; A Dodge Caravan, driven by&nbsp; 65 year old Dusty Trembly of Sidney,&nbsp; was attempting to turn east on Highway 26 from a historical marker pull off near Bridgeport,&nbsp; when the van collided with a westbound Dodge Dakota pickup.&nbsp; Trembly was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the pickup as transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; A passenger in the van was also transported with minor injuries.&nbsp; The crash remains under investigation.&nbsp;
