CHADRON – Chadron State College students and faculty attended the Nebraska Academy of Sciences Conference April 21-23 in Lincoln. The students were Isioma Akwanamnye of Lagos, Nigeria, Corey Griffin of Omaha, Riley Hill of Greybull, Wyo., Abigail Klammer of Juniata, Neb., Spencer Knuth of Holdrege, Neb., Joshua Kruse of Gurley, Neb., Jared Nelson of Gordon, Neb., Thea Rosberg of Wausa, Neb., and Emmanuella Tchona of Republic of Benin. The faculty included Dr. Ann Buchmann, Dr. Mary Keithly, Dr. Jeffrey Kiiskila, and Dr. Mike Leite.

Other students who presented virtually included Beau Jersild and Robert Logan Tiensvold of Chadron. Tiensvold won the Nebraska Geological Society prize for best undergraduate paper in the Earth Sciences.

Leite said he was honored to see the student presentations.

“I am proud to have played a part in the education of these talented young scientists,” Leite said.

Klammer and Rosberg are NASA fellows, and Akwanamnye, Kruse, and Tchona are IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) students. INBRE is a statewide grant program that funds Nebraska undergraduates’ research for two years.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12662" target="_blank">Akwanamnye</a>, a graduating&nbsp;<a href="https://csc.edu/sci/biology/inbre/index.csc" target="_blank">INBRE</a>&nbsp;student, has been accepted at Case Western where she will be doing graduate-level cancer research.

Keithly said the&nbsp;students did an amazing job presenting their research.

“They presented high-quality research and connected with fellow scientists from other Nebraska higher education institutions. I was very proud of everyone that participated both in-person and online,” Keithly said.

Recent CSC graduates who conducted research and helped write presentations but did not travel to Lincoln included Lelisse Umeta, Feven Hailemariam, Alisha Huynh, and Joseph Keating.

Faculty who contributed to or supervised research, but did not attend the conference include Dr. Tim Keith and Dr. Tawny Tibbits.

Chadron students, faculty present at Nebraska Academy of Sciences

At its May 3 meeting, Alliance City Council approved a resolution for financial assistance to help Keep Alliance Beautiful (KAB) continue recycling operations, after being denied funding from the Nebraska Environmental Trust (NET). 

KAB was expecting $95,342 in funding from NET this year, after having received similar grants from the organization each year in the past decade.

The council authorized $12,500 to be transferred from contingency funds to KAB for the first quarter and continue through quarterly installments. 

KAB will receive $50,000 in total from the city for the 2022-2023 budget year. 

"They have received some other grant funds from other sources," Alliance City Manager Seth Sorenson said. "But unfortunately, it requires a one-to-one match. And that is the part where the grant that they were unable to secure this year, would have come in handy because they could have used that as that one-to-one match. The intent is for that to be used as their one- to-one match. And hopefully this will get them through the next year and they can apply once again, for the grant (NET)."

KAB's recycling operation is vital in Alliance and the Panhandle. 

"One of the things that I have discovered in the last few months is that we're actually serving the entire region," Sorenson said. "We have people who drive from other counties to come here just to recycle."

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A teen driver was transported to the hospital after his vehicle struck a tree in North Platte on Thursday afternoon.

At around 4:45 p.m., police and fire personnel responded to a one-vehicle accident at the intersection of 4th Street and Sheridan Ave.

It was reported that a vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree.

Reports indicate the 16-year-old male driver was traveling westbound on 4th Street when he suffered a medical emergency and struck the tree.

Airbags in the vehicle did deploy and the driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, was wearing a seatbelt.

He was transported to Great Plains Health with injuries that aren't believed to be life-threatening.&nbsp;

One transported to hospital after car strikes tree in North Platte

KANSAS CITY, MO.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol is teaming up with neighboring state patrols and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a special effort this Mother’s Day weekend. The&nbsp;Slow Down Move Over&nbsp;partnership reminds all drivers to obey the speed limit and to move over for emergency vehicles.

“Speeding is a major factor in many of the serious and fatal crashes we see on roadways in Nebraska and our neighboring states,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “In 2020 alone, 787 lives in our region were lost in speeding-related crashes. That’s why we’re reminding drivers to stay alert and follow the posted speed limits. Let’s work together and make sure everyone makes it home to mom safely this Mother’s Day.”

Nationally in 2020, 30% of all crash fatalities were related to speeding. According to NHTSA, a crash on a road with a speed limit of 65 mph or greater is more than twice as likely to be fatal than a crash on a road with a speed limit of 45 or 50 mph and nearly five times as likely on a road with a speed limit of 40 mph or below.

This weekend’s partnership includes troopers from the Arkansas State Police, Iowa State Patrol, Kansas Highway Patrol, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Nebraska State Patrol. Those states comprise Region 7 of NHTSA.

“As our troopers and partners work across the region, we ask the public to help keep them safe by following&nbsp;Move Over&nbsp;laws,” said Colonel Bolduc. “Those laws help protect law enforcement, other emergency responders, and tow operators while they perform their jobs on the road. Please help them also get home safely to their families by always moving over when you come upon an emergency vehicle working roadside.”

NSP: Make it home to Mom this Mother’s Day

Nebraskans have long been strong supporters of the right to keep and bear arms.&nbsp; Nearly 85 years after it was enshrined in the Second Amendment at the federal level, Nebraska’s leaders chose to make our stance on gun rights crystal clear.&nbsp;&nbsp;Article I of the Nebraska Constitution proclaims that “the right to keep and bear arms for security or defense of self, family, home, and others, and for lawful common defense, hunting, recreational use, and all other lawful purposes...shall not be denied or infringed by the state or any subdivision thereof.” &nbsp;This should serve as the exclamation point on where Nebraska stands in its commitment to constitutional gun rights.

But we can do better for Nebraskans. &nbsp;Right now, law-abiding citizens must jump through burdensome hoops to carry a concealed firearm.&nbsp; Our Nebraska State Patrol has done a phenomenal job streamlining the permitting process.&nbsp; But statutory hurdles remain.&nbsp; Existing state law requires individuals wishing to carry their legally owned firearm to first complete a handgun training and safety course; fill out a concealed handgun permit application; and then travel to the nearest Nebraska State Patrol Troop Headquarters to submit the application and undergo fingerprinting and a background check.&nbsp; Then, they must wait until the application is processed and the permit is issued.&nbsp; At best, these steps are a nuisance to law-abiding citizens looking to exercise their Second Amendment rights.&nbsp; At worst, they are a barrier to those looking to protect themselves, such as victims of stalking or harassment.&nbsp; Under constitutional carry, law-abiding Nebraskans who have already undergone the background check needed to purchase a handgun would not have to wait for a permit to carry concealed.

Nebraska can join the growing number of states who’ve taken action to get rid of these restrictions.&nbsp; Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, and Indiana all enacted constitutional or permitless carry legislation in 2022.&nbsp; Nebraska’s neighboring states of Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota, and Wyoming are also among the 25 states with constitutional or permitless carry laws.&nbsp; Over 120 million Americans live under these laws, with more states looking to enact them.&nbsp; Just last week, Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference to call on Florida’s legislature to pass constitutional carry legislation.

This year, Senator Tom Brewer of Gordon introduced and prioritized LB 773 in an effort to bring constitutional carry to Nebraska.&nbsp; A solid majority of senators supported the bill, but it fell just two votes short of the 33 needed to overcome a filibuster.&nbsp; The final vote that failed to advance the bill was 31-9.&nbsp; All nine opponents were Democrats.

The typical arguments against constitutional carry simply don’t hold water.&nbsp; For example, concealed carry laws don’t decrease safety.&nbsp; The&nbsp;U.S. News and World Report&nbsp;has published public safety rankings for each state based on the FBI’s latest available data.&nbsp; The top three states for public safety are Maine, New Hampshire, and Idaho.&nbsp; All three are constitutional carry states.

Furthermore, constitutional carry legislation doesn’t mean abandoning common sense restrictions that prevent dangerous criminals from carrying guns.&nbsp; The legislation only seeks to eliminate regulations that require a&nbsp;law-abiding&nbsp;citizen&nbsp;to carry a permit while carrying their concealed firearm.&nbsp;

At the end of the day, constitutional carry is about rights.&nbsp; A citizen authorized by law to possess a firearm shouldn’t have to pay a fee and ask permission from the government to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

I’m confident it’s only a matter of time before constitutional carry comes to Nebraska.&nbsp; But it won’t happen without the determined activism of Second Amendment advocates in our state.&nbsp; I encourage Nebraskans to see how their senator voted on LB 773 by&nbsp;<a href="https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nebraskalegislature.gov%2Fbills%2Fview_votes.php%3FKeyID%3D8166&amp;data=05%7C01%7CGOV-GENERALMEDIA%40LISTSERV.NEBRASKA.GOV%7Cae4f15a31b924e47e69908da2d33f96b%7C043207dfe6894bf6902001038f11f0b1%7C0%7C0%7C637871998531027446%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=hYtxDsCrtOkzQfgTOqW%2FSkfqd8HUYOTIbNNF6sE2cf0%3D&amp;reserved=0" target="_blank">clicking here</a>.&nbsp;

While we work on constitutional carry legislation in Nebraska, we also need to be forward thinking.&nbsp; To preserve our right to bear arms, we must individually pass on our love for and understanding of the Second Amendment to the next generation.&nbsp; The “Take ‘em Hunting” program offered by Nebraska Game and Parks is a great way to do this.&nbsp; The program encourages veteran hunters to take a beginner with them and pass their knowledge on.&nbsp; Hunters can submit a picture and story of their experience online to be entered in a drawing for prizes (<a href="https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Foutdoornebraska.gov%2Ftakeemhunting&amp;data=05%7C01%7CGOV-GENERALMEDIA%40LISTSERV.NEBRASKA.GOV%7Cae4f15a31b924e47e69908da2d33f96b%7C043207dfe6894bf6902001038f11f0b1%7C0%7C0%7C637871998531027446%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=TnQShCOZssJTSFSwD5SH4KAXtXzBprRIGE%2BMa8bc0UU%3D&amp;reserved=0" target="_blank">outdoornebraska.gov/takeemhunting</a>). &nbsp;This program has been hugely successful. &nbsp;In just its third year, it’s already introduced more than 2,000 Nebraskans to hunting.&nbsp; This year, “Take ’em Hunting” will run through the end of the spring turkey season on May 31, 2022.&nbsp; So, when you go out to hunt this month, I encourage you to share your passion by taking someone with you.&nbsp;

Our freedom to keep and bear arms is rooted in the recognition that our rights are given to us by God, not by the government.&nbsp; These rights, declared in both our federal and state constitutions, shouldn’t be costly and time-consuming to exercise.&nbsp; Together, let’s work to end the lengthy delay and cost in order to conceal carry in Nebraska.

A solid majority of senators supported the bill, but it fell just two votes short of the 33 needed to overcome a filibuster.&nbsp; The final vote that failed to advance the bill was 31-9.&nbsp; All nine opponents were Democrats.The typical arguments against constitutional carry simply don’t hold water.&nbsp; For example, concealed carry laws don’t decrease safety.&nbsp; The&nbsp;U.S. News and World Report&nbsp;has published public safety rankings for each state based on the FBI’s latest available data.&nbsp; The top three states for public safety are Maine, New Hampshire, and Idaho.&nbsp; All three are constitutional carry states.Furthermore, constitutional carry legislation doesn’t mean abandoning common sense restrictions that prevent dangerous criminals from carrying guns.&nbsp; The legislation only seeks to eliminate regulations that require a&nbsp;law-abiding&nbsp;citizen&nbsp;to carry a permit while carrying their concealed firearm.&nbsp;At the end of the day, constitutional carry is about rights.&nbsp; A citizen authorized by law to possess a firearm shouldn’t have to pay a fee and ask permission from the government to exercise their Second Amendment rights.I’m confident it’s only a matter of time before constitutional carry comes to Nebraska.&nbsp; CHADRON – Chadron State College Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) members won 28 awards at the annual Nebraska State Leadership Conference in March in Kearney. Student attendees were Ryan Sparrow, Drew Kurtenbach, Markus Ramsey, Makenna Cormack, Aubree Noble, Phillip Soto, Andrew Avila, Logan Parde, Allison Schneider, and Trevin Hanson. Swaranga Fernando competed online.

The CSC chapter won first place for Largest Percent Increase in Membership. Individual first place winners include Schneider in Business Law, Kurtenbach, Sparrow, and Ramsey in Global Analysis and Decision Making,&nbsp;Soto, Avila, and Noble in Integrated Marketing Campaign, Parde in Microeconomics, Schneider in Organizational Behavior and Leadership, and Noble in Project Management and Social Media Marketing.

All those who placed in the top four in their categories will advance to the national PBL competition in Chicago in June.

Kurtenbach, president of the CSC chapter, said the conference was successful.

“This was our first in-person competition in two years, and for a lot of our members, their first-ever PBL competition. Everyone competed at a high level, and I was so proud of how well our chapter did,” Kurtenbach said. Noble, who has been involved with FBLA and PBL for eight years, said the conference was a good experience.

“It was amazing to network and make new friends, see some old ones, and leave with three first-place awards. I’m forever grateful for PBL and looking forward to one last national competition this summer in Chicago,” Noble said.

OGALLALA, Neb.-Officials with the City of Ogallala are taking a proactive approach to the wildfire season, canceling their public fireworks display and banning the discharge of fireworks within the city limits.

Officials announced this morning that the public fireworks display slated for July 4 will not take place.&nbsp;

Officials also said that the discharge of fireworks within the city limits will not be allowed. Typically, residents are allowed to discharge fireworks from June 25 to July 4.

Residents who made donations to the public fireworks display can request a refund in writing at:&nbsp;

Donations made will carryover to the next public fireworks display if refunds are not requested.

Language use is a critical component of relationships, success in school and work, and survival in our society. People in poverty, especially emotional poverty, often have difficulty negotiating different situations because of the language barriers they face.

The voice we use affects our ability to communicate. The Bridges Out of Poverty materials identify three voices: the child voice, the parent voice, and the adult voice. Each voice has positive and negative versions, and we all use each of them at some point. The goal is to move people, especially those who work in agencies, schools, or government, to a positive adult voice. The secondary goal is to teach clients how to use the adult voice to advocate for their needs and to resolve conflicts.

The child voice can be playful, spontaneous, and curious. However, it can also be whining, defensive, emotional, or victimized. When conflicts occur, we see strongly negative nonverbal behavior like tantrums or physical aggression. If you are hearing phrases like “You don’t love me,” “I hate you,” “___ made me do it,” “It’s your fault,” “You’re ugly,” then you are hearing the child voice. These phrases are based on conflict, emotion, and attempts to manipulate.

The parent voice can be authoritative, firm, calm, and supportive. However, it can also be judgmental, demanding, punitive, or blaming. Comments might include “That’s stupid,” “Why can’t you be like ___?” “Life’s not fair,” “If you weren’t so ___, then this wouldn’t have happened,” “Because I said so,” “You are worthless” – or good, or beautiful, or bad – or any judgmental comment. The parent voice is usually loving and supportive. But during conflicts these kinds of phrases create barriers and make it difficult to work through problems. They can be accompanied by physical actions that are meant to be punitive.

The adult voice is non-judgmental, factual, and free of negative nonverbals; but it is often seen as being uncaring or unempathetic. The adult voice involves asking questions in order to reach a win-win situation. “What are the choices/options we have?” “How can we resolve this problem?” “I am comfortable/uncomfortable with ___.” “This is the consequence of that action.” You might even hear “We’ll have to agree to disagree.”

In dysfunctional families or relationships, there are often only two voices: the negative child voice and the negative parent voice.

In work situations, supervisors who talk to other adults using the negative parent voice create morale problems and decrease productivity. Employees, especially those experiencing poverty, often quit.

Conflict resolution requires that we use the adult voice and formal register. We ask questions for understanding. And we focus on the issue and not the person.

Our agencies, schools, businesses, and offices tend to use the parent voice. We often want to control the situation and make demands, and we are frequently judgmental. In the Bridges Out of Poverty program that will be held in Alliance on June 9, we will learn more about how to achieve a well-developed adult voice.

Bridges Out of Poverty programs are designed to help professionals and communities develop strategies for dealing with the issues that separate social and economic classes, like the issues of language. Bridges Out of Poverty programs have transformed schools, agencies, and communities throughout America.

Bridges: Community Lens will be held in the Alliance High School commons area on Thursday, June 9, 9:00-3:00. The workshop will help community sectors in planning how to better meet the needs of those in poverty.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man is in jail after a police officer was injured while arresting him on domestic violence allegations.

According to police, on May 2 at around 9:21 a.m., officers responded to the report of an assault in the 600 block of E. 4th St.

Officers arrived and met with a victim who reported they had been assaulted by Jonathan Alsip, 34.

The victim told officers they had been attacked by Alsip who approached them from behind and struck them several times in the face and neck. Police said officers observed redness in the area that corroborated the victim's account.

Officers attempted to locate Alsip but were unable to.

On May 3, at around 3:48 p.m., officers responded to the report of a suspicious person in the 400 block of E. 6th St.

Officers arrived and found Alsip in the area.

As officers attempted to take him into custody on the domestic violence allegations, police said Alsip fled and officers pursued him.

Police said Alsip continued to struggle with officers who deployed a Taser. Alsip was then taken into custody and transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center on suspicion of domestic assault, assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest.

Police said one of the arresting officers suffered minor injuries during the altercation.

Chadron State College Commencement set for Saturday

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is looking to provide additional hunting and fishing opportunities on private lands through its Open Fields and Waters Program.

Landowners willing to allow public, walk-in access for hunting or fishing can receive annual, per-acre payments through the program. Participating landowners are afforded liability protection through the Nebraska Recreational Liability Act. Additional financial incentives often are available for habitat improvements, such as Conservation Reserve Program enrollment or management upgrades.

Game and Parks primarily is seeking to add the following types of enrollments, but all properties offering high-quality hunting or fishing opportunities will be considered:

Conservation Reserve Program –&nbsp;CRP fields provide excellent hunting opportunities for upland game birds and acres in any part of the state will be considered. Landowners can receive up to $10 per acre for CRP, depending upon location and habitat quality.

Wetland Reserve Program easements –&nbsp;Landowners who have Wetland Reserve Program easements can earn up to $15 per acre for accessible portions of WRP easements with suitable habitats.

Grasslands –&nbsp;High-quality grassland habitat that provides mixed-bag hunting opportunities for upland game birds and big game species are being sought statewide. Properties in the Sandhills supporting prairie grouse, mule deer and/or antelope are a priority, along with sites in south-central and southeastern Nebraska that offer quail and/or white-tailed deer hunting opportunities.

Woodlands –&nbsp;Heavily timbered areas along riparian corridors and those with canyon-like topography are being pursued in many areas. Rates for high-quality woodlands range from $5 to $15 per acre, depending on habitat quality and location.

Fishing access –&nbsp;Ponds, lakes, warm-water streams or rivers and cool-water streams with trout are potential targets. Payment rates are per surface acre on lakes and ponds and per stream mile on streams or rivers.

 <li>A lone fawn, or other young bird or mammal, may appear to be abandoned or injured, but the mother frequently is off feeding or drinking. Do not move it. The longer the fawn is separated from its mother, the slimmer the chance that it will be reunited with her. In some cases, other deer will adopt an orphaned fawn.</li><li>It is normal for a doe to leave its fawn to keep it from being detected by predators. Predators can see the doe as it feeds, so she leaves the fawn hidden and leaves the area to draw attention away from the fawn's location.</li><li>Do not try to raise wildlife babies as pets. As animals mature, they become more independent and follow natural instincts to leave and establish their own territories. Rescued animals are poorly prepared for life in the wild.</li><li>Most wildlife babies are protected by state or federal law and it is illegal to possess them.</li>

Alliance – Snow-Redfern Foundation is honored to announce that eight (8) High School Seniors have been selected as scholarship recipients for the Snow-Redfern Foundation managed scholarship funds.

Three young people were selected by the Snow-Redfern Foundation to receive the Hempel Family Scholarship in the fall of 2022. Braelyn Shrewsbury, of Alliance, will be pursuing a degree Veterinary Technology from Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture. Emma Wood, of Alliance, will be attending University of Nebraska at Omaha for a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and master’s degree in School Counseling. Julie Johnson, of Hemingford, will be attending Western Nebraska Community College to pursue a degree in Social Work.

Four students were selected for the K.M. Dahlstedt Scholarship, to be awarded for the fall of 2022. Zane Stoike, of Alliance, will attend Western Nebraska Community College to pursue a degree in Powerline Construction and Maintenance. Braelyn Shrewsbury, of Alliance, will be pursuing a degree in Veterinary Technology from Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture. Abigail Burri, of Alliance, will attend the University of Nebraska at Kearney in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Luna Gonzalez, of Alliance, will be attending the University of Nebraska at Omaha in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in Nursing Science.

The sole recipient of the Kevin Horn Scholarship was Liliana Cuevas, of Hemingford. She will be attending Western Nebraska Community College to pursue an associate degree in Early Childhood Education.

Preference for these three scholarship programs is given to young people attending Hemingford or Alliance Public Schools, with plans to remain in Nebraska following completion of their higher education.

We are pleased to award this scholarship to students, such as Braelyn, Emma, Julie, Liliana, Zane, Luna, and Abigail- all whom possess impressive qualities, including leadership, service, and dedication to academic studies,” commented Sara Nicholson, Executive Director of Snow-Redfern Foundation.

“We have been blessed with the opportunity to award the ongoing generous gifts honoring Mr. and Ms. Hempel, who were consistently generous contributors to Snow-Redfern Foundation, formerly the Nebraska Boys Ranch. Mr. Hempel was a long-time board member and he and his family supported the youth at Nebraska Boys Ranch through service and contributions intended to impact the lives of the youth placed at the Ranch,” shared Snow-Redfern Foundation’s Grant &amp; Scholarship Committee Chairperson, Andrew Hunzeker. “This year we were also honored to received two additional scholarship gifts and are thankful to the Dahlstedt family and Kevin Horn for supporting the future success of these students.”
