Omaha – After a 2021 postponement due to the Covid 19 virus, the Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN) is back for its 40th year in 2022.

 This touring event offers bicyclists the opportunity to take part in a week-long bike ride celebrating our state’s scenic beauty. BRAN is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides scholarships to Nebraska high school seniors from the overnight host communities to attend Nebraska trade schools, colleges, universities and other secondary opportunities.

The theme of this year’s BRAN is “NEBRASKA --- BEST BY BICYCLE” which will provide the opportunity to ride on paved highway shoulders on Highway 2 of the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway through the scenic sandhills of central Nebraska – a top 10 scenic route in the US. The ride will start in Alliance on Sunday, June 5 and overnight in Hyannis, Thedford, Callaway, Ord, St. Edward, Shelby and ends in Wahoo on Saturday, June 11. This year’s BRAN will again have 3 and 4 day options to ride as well as the traditional 7 day tour.

While we do provide scholarships, our ultimate goal is to offer bicyclists a safe and fun ride each year. BRAN awards scholarships to students selected from the host communities’ schools with the only qualifier that those students attend a Nebraska school or other educational opportunity.

The cost of the tour is $350 for the week or $200 for the 4 day and $150 for the 3 day tour; registration increases after April 15, 2022. Included in the fee are transportation of all gear during the week, stationary and mobile support on the road including water and refreshments, hot showers, coffee in the morning, a commemorative t-shirt and water bottle and the opportunity to ride with fellow cyclists who enjoy taking the full day and stopping to enjoy what Nebraska has to offer. Bus rides to the beginning town of Alliance is an additional charge. Registration should be done on-line at BRAN-Inc.org. There are no paid employees and BRAN is run completely by volunteers who use personal time to work for the week for the benefit of the riders.

The goal has been to expand the pool of certified providers, partly to be prepared for a possible influx of out-of-state patients, but also to reduce wait times for in-state patients and improve access for underserved communities. 

The efforts have taken on new urgency in recent months amid doubt over the durability of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in another example of diverging state policies on abortion.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol removed from the road 20 impaired drivers during Memorial Day Weekend. Troopers also assisted 226 motorists in need of help throughout the state.

The annual&nbsp;Click It or Ticket&nbsp;national mobilization continues through this week. Troopers will continue working overtime as part of that effort to maintain a safe start to the summer driving season.

“Summer will be full of vacations and holiday celebrations,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “If those events involve alcohol, plan ahead to have a sober driver. And no matter how far your travels take you, always wear a seat belt.”

In addition to the 20 arrests for driving under the influence, troopers also issued citations for speeding (292), open alcohol container (14), minor in possession of alcohol (14), driving under suspension (26), no proof of insurance (18), no seat belt (5), and improper child restraint (7).

Troopers in Troop D also participated in a localized enforcement operation focused on impaired driving around recreation areas. Troopers made seven DUI arrests as part of that effort this weekend. The Troop D campaign was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $10,030 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation -Highway Safety Office.

On May 29 first responders from many agencies responded to Lake Minatare.

The Scotts Bluff County Communications Center received two calls that sounded like different circumstances.

The first call, at 3:36 p.m., reported “a 16-year-old male came here and advised he was hit by a tree and is hurting pretty bad...advised he was hit in the chest," said Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman.&nbsp;

Sixteen minutes later, a Game and Parks officer on scene said that the subject was alert and responsive...and responders could drop their emergency response.

The second call, at 3:37 p.m., reported “a 911 call with a female screaming, barely able to understand...heard terms, 'water is too strong…I’m getting…by the water'…help," said Overman.&nbsp;

The communications center made multiple unsuccessful attempts to call the party back.

"Eventually, law enforcement determined that both calls involved the same individual," Overman said. "The individual was transported to Regional West Medical Center by private parties. Law enforcement spoke with the parties involved and determined that the incident was accidental and did not involve any serious injuries."

Memorial Day weekend marked the unofficial start of summer and a dangerous time of year for young drivers. Nationwide, more than 30 percent of deaths involving teen drivers occur during what’s called the “100 Deadliest Days” - a period that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.&nbsp;

For every mile driven, new teen drivers (ages 16-17 years old) are three times more likely to be involved in a deadly crash compared to adults.&nbsp;Now that school is out for summer, these inexperienced teen drivers will have more time to spend on the road. That means more time driving at night and potentially engaging in risky behaviors like speeding, texting, or simply sharing the vehicle with teen passengers. While a great place to work and raise a family, Nebraska also has a wonderful quality of life.&nbsp; We have some of the best turkey, water fowl, and deer hunting anywhere in America.&nbsp; With nearly 80,000 miles of rivers and streams, Nebraskans have abundant opportunities to fish. &nbsp;The sandy beaches of Lake McConaughy and the Calamus Reservoir are attractive destinations to soak up the sun or take a swim.&nbsp; This year, we passed major legislation to enhance water recreation in Nebraska.&nbsp; We’re constructing a new marina at Lake McConaughy, significantly expanding the marina at Lewis and Clark Lake, and creating a 3,600-acre reservoir between Lincoln and Omaha.

Activate Alliance is working to keep all physical activity options accessible for a variety of ages and abilities and is excited to kick off a community bike share program at no charge to users.

Gently used bikes have been tuned-up, painted bright green, and each have a reflective sticker indicating it’s part of the Alliance Community Bike program. They are available at participating locations around the community with additional locations added in the coming weeks:

Committee members have been excited to make this happen, donating countless volunteer hours, and even personally financially donating because they believe in the cause. If you are interested in donating a bike, volunteering to maintain bikes, or being involved in planning, the Activate Alliance committee meets the 3rd&nbsp;Thursday of each month @ 9am.

The committee has been excited to see a number of successes including crosswalk beautification, signage upgrades, walk audits, and various communications. Activate Alliance includes the school, community residents, hospital, city, law enforcement, public transit, senior services, community center, and public health. Their goal is to make Alliance a safer place to walk, bike, and roll and are funded in part through the Box Butte Health Foundation.

Alliance residents reminded of community bikes available for use

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Thousands of people in Minnesota and South Dakota are without electrical power as the region recovered from storms and tornadoes that left damaged buildings, trees and roadways. 

The National Weather Service says in a preliminary report there were four tornadoes on Monday in western Minnesota, along with wind gusts and large hail. 

More than 37,000 people were reported to be without power early Tuesday. 

Cities across the region reported extensive damage to buildings. 

No fatalities from the storms had been reported early Tuesday.

On May 30 at 9:45 a.m. a Harley-Davidson motorcycle occupied by two Dawes County residents were traveling west on Highway 12 in Utah near Bryce Canyon National Park.&nbsp;

 An antelope jumped in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the antelope and lost control causing both occupants to be fully ejected.

The driver and Dawes County Commissioner, 62-year-old Levi Grant sustained fatal injuries at the scene. 

"The passenger [61-year-old Mimi Wheeler-Groves] was taken by ambulance and then flown to a local hospital in extremely critical condition," Utah Highway Patrol said.&nbsp; "Helmets were worn by both occupants, but heavily damaged."

According to family of those involved in this accident, Groves also passed away from injuries.&nbsp;

2 Chadron residents involved in fatal motorcycle accident in Utah 

Governor Pete Ricketts and First Lady Susanne Shore revealed the design of the next general issue Nebraska license plate. &nbsp;The design is a mosaic pattern depicting the Genius of Creative Energy and is based on artwork inside the Nebraska Capitol Building.

The original “Genius of Creative Energy” mosaic kicks off a series of mosaics around the Nebraska Capitol, all working together to relate the State’s history to the ideals of Western Civilization. &nbsp;Designed by world-renowned artist Hildreth Meiere in 1927, the Genius brandishes a lightning bolt in his right hand and is propelled across the sky by harnessing the power of the four elements.

The license plate design pays homage to this Genius and all the mosaics in the Nebraska Capitol depicting Nebraskans’ shared story. &nbsp;It was designed by Nebraska-based brand and design consultant Drew Davies. &nbsp;“I'm deeply honored to have the opportunity to design a license plate celebrating the creative energy of all Nebraskans," Davies shared.

“I want to thank the countless Nebraskans who have come to us with ideas and feedback over the years,” said First Lady Susanne Shore. &nbsp;“Ultimately, we found a design that every Nebraskan can relate to. &nbsp;I especially want to thank Drew for unleashing his creative genius to depict our state’s own.”

The kick-off event will take place from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. There will be games for everyone, a bit of music and food (until supplies last). A tiny beach will be provided for those desirous to play with the sand.

Participants can wear costumes related to the Ocean theme or their swimming suits if they so desire.

The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department and the Chadron Police Department will be present with some of their equipment.

Oceans of Possibilities is the theme of this year Summer Reading Program. Every Summer, the Chadron Public Library offers a reading contests to young patrons (ages 6 months to 18 years old). Helping children to retain reading skills during the summer months is the goal of the Summer Reading Program.

This year, the Program will span from June 4 to July 16. Preregistration will be June 4. First 50 individuals to sign up will receive a t-shirt. The official registration will continue from June 6 to the end of the program: July 16. Participants will be able to garner weekly prizes based on the amount of reading done. There will be a final award event with prizes for all readers.

During the Summer Reading Program, the library will offer weekly events for different age levels. See the schedule below:

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota voters are set to vote again on whether they want recreational marijuana legalized for adults.

 The secretary of state on Wednesday validated the initiated measure for the November ballot. 

Secretary of State Steve Barnett announced that a random sample of petition signatures showed that South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws, the group campaigning to legalize pot, had easily collected enough valid signatures to surpass the roughly 17,000 needed to place the initiated measure on the November ballot.

On Saturday, May 28 at approximately 12:30 p.m. members of the Cheyenne Police Laramie County Joint SWAT Team were involved in an incident that resulted in a use of force action with homicide suspect, Davin Darayle Saunders, near the 2500 block of East 11th Street.

On Tuesday, May 24 the Cheyenne Police Department received a report that Saunders was in Cheyenne. Further investigation revealed Saunders was located at a residence near the 2500 block of East 11th Street. The CPD’s joint SWAT team was notified and responded to the area to conduct surveillance. 

A warrant was issued for officers to enter the residence. While on scene, the SWAT team attempted to communicate with Saunders, asking him to exit the residence, but he refused. Officers deployed gas in an attempt to safely lure Saunders out of the home, but he pulled a firearm and officers fired on Saunders killing him. No further injuries were reported.

Saunders was wanted out of Scottsbluff, Nebraska for multiple homicide related charges. He had a history of violence, and was considered armed and dangerous.

The scene is still active and has been turned over to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.&nbsp;

Scottsbluff homicide suspect shot dead in Wyoming 

OMAHA, NE (May 24,2022) -&nbsp;&nbsp;AAA will be working to keep impaired drivers off the road for Memorial Day weekend. The Auto Club Group is reactivating its Tow to Go program for the holiday period, providing safe transportation for impaired drivers and their vehicles.

AAA Tow to Go has&nbsp;removed more than 25,000 impaired drivers from the road. When called, a tow truck transports the would-be impaired driver and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10 mile radius.&nbsp;The service is free, yet AAA asks that it be treated as a backup plan.

Approximately one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 28 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes every day – that’s one person every 52 minutes.

AAA activates 'Tow to Go' for Memorial Day holiday weekend

As Nebraska’s state parks prepare for another summer season, some are adjusting their activity hours because of a limited workforce. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission urges park-goers to call ahead before visiting a park to check on activity times and availability.

Game and Parks annually hires nearly 900 workers across the state to assist with a variety of state park operations during the summer. So far this season, at some larger park operations, there are only about half the needed staff to operate some activities.

“We appreciate everyone’s support and patience as we make the necessary changes to adapt to the current staffing challenges,” Parks Division Administrator Jeff Fields said. “We will do our best to still provide many excellent recreational opportunities that people expect in their parks.”

Platte River State Park – Starting May 28, the hours of operation at the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p. m. Stations available on those days may be limited depending on staffing.

Some state park area hours of operation reduced heading into summer

THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. —&nbsp;Hot Springs Health, a Thermopolis, Wyo., hub for healthcare in the Big Horn Basin, first opened its doors in 1958. HSH currently has a hospital, four family practice clinics, and a surgical clinic.

The board of directors has announced the appointment of Scott Alwin as the new CEO of Hot Springs Health. His tenure begins on July 1, when he will take over for Margie Molitor.

HealthTech Staffing, a Brentwood, Tennessee-based healthcare consulting and management firm helped direct the search for the “right candidate.”

Alwin’s 20 years of experience in the healthcare field include time spent in administrative and clinical settings. He plans to introduce more stabilization, team building, and cost efficiency to the job.

“This is an exciting time for everyone at HSH. After an exhaustive, nationwide search for a talented CEO for our growing organization, we’re very pleased to find that our most qualified candidate was in house,” Bill Williams DVM, board chairman, said. “Everyone knows Scott, and he knows the ins and outs, the top and bottom of our hospital system. I’m confident he’ll hit all our targets in the near future. I also want to say that Margie Molitor did a superb job these last six years. We’re all very happy with the work she’s done to get us this far and wish her the best of luck,” Williams remarks.

Previously, Alwin served as the Chief Clinical Officer for the hospital, he held that position until 2021. As CCO, Alwin directed the planning and coordination of all clinical services: Nursing Services, Cardiopulmonary, Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging, Pharmarcy, Ambulatory, Surgical Services, Nutrition/Food Services, Care Coordination/Utilization Review and Quality and Clinical Informatics.

Originally from northwest Kansas, the Colby native earned his Master of Science, Health Services Administration from Regis University, his Master of Science, Physical Therapy from Des Moines University and his Bachelor of Science, General Science from Fort Hays State University.

Alwin previously served in a variety of roles at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, Neb., for 16 years, as well as stints at Regional West Health Services in Scottsbluff and Gering, Neb.

“My family and I are thrilled to have this opportunity come up at the place that I’ve called home. It’s been a trying time these past couple years with the pandemic, and I couldn’t be happier to set down roots here at Hot Springs Health,” Alwin said. “The staff and even the patients I’ve had the pleasure of working with have all been extremely kind and welcoming.”
