A Day at the Lake, set for 3 to 7 p.m. June 18, will offer opportunities to fish from the bank or by kayak, experience fly-fishing or bowfishing — as well as the chance to use a stand-up paddleboard with PaddleLyfe, go kayaking or take a pontoon tour of the lake.

Anglers can talk with biologists and consultants who designed the renovation and learn about new features and fish species in the lake.

The Aquatic Habitat Program, funded by anglers, was the first of its kind in the nation when implemented. The program works to enhance aquatic ecosystems by implementing restoration techniques in-lake and in the watersheds that feed them. In addition to improving aquatic habitat and water quality, the program also works vigorously to improve boat and bank angler access at Nebraska waterbodies.

Conestoga Lake was the site of the largest Aquatic Habitat Program project in the program’s 25-year history. The fishery now offers largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, walleye and tiger muskellunge. Celebrate Game and Parks’ aquatic habitat program with Day at the Lake

CHADRON – Chadron State College students, a CSC alumna, and elementary students joined hundreds of other volunteers collaborating with a University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) community science project this spring.

The purpose of the project is to determine if spotted skunks remain in Nebraska since the last known sighting of the species occurred in 2017. More than 600 volunteers are assisting to determine if any populations are left, and if so, where they are located, and what habitat they prefer.

Dr. Teresa Frink, professor of Agriculture and Range Management, contacted UNO graduate student, April Sperfslage, who is overseeing the project and was able to involve 39 CSC students and Hay Springs Higher Ability Learners (HAL) in the spotted skunk survey.

The CSC students worked in small teams to place 20 trail cameras with bait stations a specified distance from the cameras in an effort to document the presence of spotted skunks.

CSC alumna Crystal Vander May, HAL leader at Hay Springs, and her students participated by placing a camera on Frink’s land, south of Hay Springs.

CSC students Sage McGinnis, Hayden McGinnis, Brolin Morgan, and Morgan&nbsp;Fawver, participated in the project from mid-March until early May. Sage McGinnis and Hayden McGinnis of Buena Vista, Colorado, who are siblings, worked in a team with fellow CSC student Emma Pendleton of Hemingford, Nebraska.

Sage McGinnis said working with UNO and the NGPC was a rewarding experience and the process allowed her to have an increased understanding of the complexity of a study of wildlife populations.

“It is satisfying to work on a project that will be utilized outside of the school setting. Moving forward in our individual careers, it will be extremely beneficial to have this experience and knowledge about how to collaborate with various organizations working towards a common goal,” Sage McGinnis said.

Hayden&nbsp;McGinnnis&nbsp;said he gained important insights from conducting hands-on research.

“A lot can be learned in the classroom, but often the most beneficial experience comes in the field. It was fun to go out and set the camera traps following various protocols and methodologies relating to the study. Overall, it was very interesting to participate in and witness how the research process works in the field,” he said.

Hayden McGinnis said his team placed its camera southeast of Crawford near some abandoned buildings and a seasonal wetland. Many images were tumbleweeds and grass blowing in the wind, some were of cats, raccoons, deer, robins, and doves, but none were spotted skunks.

“It was a challenge to keep the vegetation clipped enough so that when the wind blew the camera would not be tripped by the blowing vegetation. With each camera check we had to modify it a little bit to minimize these impacts,” Hayden McGinnis said.

Morgan and her research partner,&nbsp;Fawver, both of McCook, Nebraska, placed their camera on land by Maxwell, Nebraska, near the Platte River.&nbsp;

The two refreshed the bait over several weeks, and the camera captured photos of white-tailed deer, common raccoon, and Virginia opossums, although no spotted skunks, according to Morgan.

Vander May said starting the project with her HAL students triggered a flood of questions and resulted in them researching more about the species and possible reasons for a declining population including reproduction, food supply, environmental changes, and predators.

Vander May said she and the HAL students measured the trees’ distance and height in order to find a suitable location for luring a spotted skunk. The Frink family updated the bait and checked on the camera.

“Our prediction of the spotted skunk being rare was confirmed when we had no sightings of them on our trail camera. However, we were able to access a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/watchablewildlife/nebraska-wildlife-watch" target="_blank">website</a>&nbsp;with more trail camera photos of animals that others had caught on their trail cameras, including a spotted skunk,” Vander May said.

Shaun Dunn, Natural Heritage Zoologist and Certified Wildlife Biologist with the NGPC,&nbsp;said partners like CSC and Hay Springs are valuable in gathering data and photos.

“This has allowed us to expand our efforts across the state and include some really needed data to the project,” Dunn said.

Sperfslage&nbsp;said students bring the additional benefit of being familiar with field sites that professional researchers may not be able to access due to lack of time or knowledge of suitable habitat.

“These students have the drive and enthusiasm to contribute to real science,” Sperfslage said. “It's difficult for just a few researchers to gather data on our own, especially if we're interested in determining where populations of spotted skunks may remain across the entire state of Nebraska.”

Involving elementary school children is an additional positive aspect of the project, according to Dunn and Sperfslage.

“It’s a great thing for the kids to be able to say, ‘I helped with that,’” Dunn said.

Sperfslage said exposing young children to wildlife research can shed light on the work.

“My hope is even if children don't fall in love with the field of wildlife research, that through community science projects they will gain respect for wildlife, the environment, and understand the importance&nbsp;of science,” Sperfslage said.

If the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals agrees, officers could be sued for interfering with people trying to record them.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A pair of dams on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota will get safety repairs as part of $29 million in funding from the federal infrastructure deal.

 Both the Oglala Dam and Allen Dam are high-hazard, meaning lives could be lost if they failed. 

They have also been in need of repair for years. 

The Oglala Dam was built in the 1940s, while the Allen Dam was built in 1961. 

Dams on the Fort Apache Reservation in Arizona and the Crow Reservation in Montana will also get a share of the $29 million.

Veterans Stand Down event set for June 1-2 at WNCC Cougar Palace

Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner. If you’re looking for ways to spend time with family, consider hiking at these 10 Nebraska state parks. These spots offer family-friendly trails set within scenic areas filled with amenities and attractions perfect for whiling away a summer’s day.

This park area offers camping and hiking next door to Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, making it easy to tour the ranch house and barn that Col. William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody built for his home during the heyday of his famous Wild West Show. Browse through a wealth of Cody memorabilia during your self-guided tour, and then take a break to wander the 5 miles of trails, which are rated “easy.”

Scenic Smith Falls State Park is home to Nebraska’s highest waterfall, also called Smith Falls. The state park is a popular destination for campers, as well as canoers, kayakers, tubers and others who visit the area to experience the beautiful Niobrara River. The park features short looping nature trails, along with restrooms and areas for picnicking.

Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park

Called “the Pompeii of prehistoric animals” by National Geographic, Ashfall Fossil Beds features a live dig and displays of carefully preserved, intact skeletons. Nearly 12 million years ago, volcanic ash engulfed this ancient watering hole, entombing innumerable animals. Visit the Rhino Barn to see them, and view interpretive displays and a working fossil preparation laboratory at the Visitor Center. Take a break to stroll a short looping nature trail.

Fort Kearny has plenty of amenities for a relaxing summer day, including camping, modern restrooms, drinking water, picnic tables, grills, an accessible fishing pier, showers and more. The park also includes a mile-long nature trail and the unique Fort Kearny hike-bike trail, which crosses both channels of the Platte River and was once a segment of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. The Fort Kearny hike-bike trail is a 1.77-mile segment of the 13.10-mile trail that connects Fort Kearny SRA to Cottonmill Park and other trail segments throughout the city of Kearney.

This modern state park is the perfect destination for a family escape. Families can visit the aquatic center and indoor playground, adventure through the treetop ropes course, play mini golf, ride horses, climb the observation tower or enjoy indoor rock climbing. A paved trail throughout the park makes it easy to venture from one attraction to the next, while the Railroad Trail takes visitors on a stroll through the trees near Peter Kiewit Lodge.

Browse through a wealth of Cody memorabilia during your self-guided tour, and then take a break to wander the 5 miles of trails, which are rated “easy.”<h2>Smith Falls State Park</h2>Scenic Smith Falls State Park is home to Nebraska’s highest waterfall, also called Smith Falls. The state park is a popular destination for campers, as well as canoers, kayakers, tubers and others who visit the area to experience the beautiful Niobrara River. The park features short looping nature trails, along with restrooms and areas for picnicking.<h2>Chadron State Park</h2>Nestled in the Pine Ridge’s distinctive buttes and canyons, Chadron State Park is a popular spot for camping, vacations and even family reunions. Park activities include fishing, camping, swimming and, of course, hiking. Chadron State Park offers 6 miles of mostly shaded hiking trails, and another 4 miles of mountain biking trails.<h2>Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area</h2>Situated high in a rocky escarpment in the Wildcat Hills, this park offers indoor interactive displays, interpretive programming, shooting sports and the exploration of more than 1,000 acres of wilderness. The nature center offers a stimulating learning environment perfect for kids, and the family-friendly Wildcat Hills Shooting Sports Complex provides diversion, too. Families can enjoy hiking the nature trail loop, which at just half a mile long, provides a nice family hike with a few ups and downs.<h2>Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park</h2>Called “the Pompeii of prehistoric animals” by National Geographic, Ashfall Fossil Beds features a live dig and displays of carefully preserved, intact skeletons. Nearly 12 million years ago, volcanic ash engulfed this ancient watering hole, entombing innumerable animals. Visit the Rhino Barn to see them, and view interpretive displays and a working fossil preparation laboratory at the Visitor Center. Take a break to stroll a short looping nature trail.<h2>Fort Kearny State Recreation Area</h2>Fort Kearny has plenty of amenities for a relaxing summer day, including camping, modern restrooms, drinking water, picnic tables, grills, an accessible fishing pier, showers and more. The park also includes a mile-long nature trail and the unique Fort Kearny hike-bike trail, which crosses both channels of the Platte River and was once a segment of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. The Fort Kearny hike-bike trail is a 1.77-mile segment of the 13.10-mile trail that connects Fort Kearny SRA to Cottonmill Park and other trail segments throughout the city of Kearney.<h2>Eugene T. Mahoney State Park</h2>This modern state park is the perfect destination for a family escape. Families can visit the aquatic center and indoor playground, adventure through the treetop ropes course, play mini golf, ride horses, climb the observation tower or enjoy indoor rock climbing. Buffalo Bill State Rec. Area named among Top 10 family-friendly trails in state

Civic
 Nebraska is honoring five Nebraskans for their efforts in creating a 
more “modern and robust democracy” in the Cornhusker state.

The<a target="_blank" href="https://www.civicnebraska.org/news/"> organization’s</a> 2022 Strengthening Democracy Awards recipients include educators, advocates, students and activists.

“A
 strong democracy does not build itself,” said Adam Morfeld, executive 
director. “It requires dedicated Americans putting community, learning, 
innovation, empowerment and optimism together and making them work for 
the common good.”

Honorees will be recognized at a celebration June 9 at DelRay 817 in Lincoln. They are:

Community Builder: Valeria Rodriguez of Gering, for increasing access to opportunities for&nbsp;residents
 of the Nebraska Panhandle. Rodriguez co-founded the nonprofit 
Empowering Families and hosts an annual multicultural youth leadership 
conference. She has organized informational meetings for the immigrant 
community and has worked to improve voter registration and census 
counts.

Civic Catalyst: Erin Feichtinger of Omaha, for fighting for housing justice through education and advocacy.
 During the most recent legislative session, Feichtinger organized, 
educated and activated hundreds of Nebraskans to fight for rental 
assistance. She has led other “calls to action,” galvanizing people to 
confront local and state housing affordability challenges.

Champion of Learning:
 Ebony McKiver of Lincoln, for promoting civic education across the 
state. As the Nebraska Department of Education’s social studies 
specialist, McKiver guides the state’s efforts to implement the 
Legislature’s revisions to civics graduation requirements and “centers 
those who have been historically marginalized.”

Young Civic Leader: Brooklyn Terrill of Lincoln, for co-writing and lobbying for meaningful&nbsp;legislation. A University of Nebraska student, Terrill was key to passage of Legislative Bill 519, an&nbsp;immunity policy for certain drug and alcohol charges that could be prohibitive to a survivor or&nbsp;witness
 of sexual assault reporting the crime. Terrill also volunteers with a 
local sexual assault crisis line and serves as on the NU government 
liaison committee.

Guardian of Voting Rights:
 Jennifer Yi-We Hernandez of Omaha, for innovation to ensure 
accessibility to voting. As the pandemic struck, she created Ballot 
Buddies, a volunteer initiative to assist voters stuck at home with 
getting ballots submitted and counted. She recruits volunteers and 
provides nonpartisan education about the election process.

Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Nebraska’s preliminary employment for April 2022 reached an all-time high of 1,040,325.&nbsp; This means nearly 22,000 more Nebraskans are working now than prior to the pandemic (February 2020). &nbsp;Additionally, Nebraska’s unemployment rate is at 1.9%.&nbsp; That’s tied for the lowest rate ever achieved by any state.&nbsp;

“We saw record-setting State revenues and our highest-ever employment in April,” said Gov. Ricketts.&nbsp; “These strong signs of growth reflect the creation of plentiful great-paying jobs for Nebraskans.&nbsp; There’s never been a better time to be a graduate looking to start a career in the Good Life.”

Nebraska leads the nation in per capita employment, with 69 out of 100 adults actively working.&nbsp; That compares with a national rate of 60 out of 100 adults employed.

Carnegie is excited to announce its new exhibit, Archetypes and Eternal Stories, on display until June 25th in the upper Skala and Garwood Galleries. The exhibit is the work of Shaun Roberts, Associate Professor at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Shaun’s artist statement reads as follows: “My recent work addresses issues of identity, mortality and the struggles that our generation face today with a future that feels uncertain. Executed in the Old Master painting tradition, Archetypes and Eternal Stories consists of large-scale narrative paintings that express a full range of human emotions and experiences. They address contemporary audiences and the uncertain times we now live in, times that are filled with disarray. We can all see that our way of life is on the brink of major changes. There is much fear and mistrust. The paintings explore narratives of great struggle and tragedy, full of turmoil and the nonrational. In essence,  the characters in the world of the paintings struggle to find reason amidst the pure pandemonium. Engaging issues specific to our generation, such as the current pandemic, its psychological effects, and larger societal implications, these pictures draw upon universal narrative and allegorical sources, familiar from the Western tradition, but global in their humanity. Archetypes and Eternal Stories challenges viewers to confront our differences of social class, race, gender, politics or religion. It revisits the ancient idea of rise and falling civilization. Are we living in a civil society of increasing vitality and humanity, or are we on our way to a new Dark Age? The characters from the Archetypes and Eternal Stories series find themselves in unbelievable circumstances.

These works were developed from parable and myth, embodying a surreal world where dream-like, dystopian settings subvert reality. Through a mixture of fact, fiction, allegory and imagination, the tragic stories depict a broken civilization, suggestive of the challenges and cultural unrest we currently face. An underlying sense of hope emerges from their dystopian experiences. Their stories are our stories and speak to our place in the universe, our shared humanity and the struggles we all face in maintaining it.”

Don’t forget! The Winter Adventures Art Camp student show is on display in the lower level studio gallery until June 11th. Artist Bob Peltz has sorted through dozens of pieces created by each student artist and selected their best individual works to put on display for the annual Adventures in Art Student Exhibit. Student work ranges from complete 3D, paintings, mixed media, and pastel works to creative and colorful warmups. The creativity, talent and imagination on display is sure to wow any viewer.&nbsp;

LINCOLN&nbsp; — Law enforcement leaders from several agencies joined traffic safety officials to encourage safe driving across Nebraska this summer.

The Nebraska State Patrol and dozens of other law enforcement agencies are participating in the annual&nbsp;Click It or Ticket&nbsp;campaign. The initiative covers the weeks surrounding Memorial Day, which marks the start of the summer driving season.

“Our troopers respond to crashes across the state and unfortunately some of those involve fatalities. In many cases, a seat belt could have made the difference between life and death,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “It’s gut-wrenching. It’s damaging for families. It hurts our communities, and it doesn’t have to happen.”

The&nbsp;Click It or Ticket&nbsp;campaign runs from Monday, May 23, through Sunday, June 5. Troopers and dispatchers will be working overtime as part of the effort, thanks in part to a grant for $24,780 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

“Buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself and all of your passengers in a crash,” said Bill Kovarik, Nebraska Highway Safety Administrator. “I believe there’s someone counting on each and every one of us to buckle up every time we get in a vehicle so that we come back alive and safe.”

According to NDOT-HSO, Nebraska ranks 4th&nbsp;worst in the United States in seat belt usage, at 81%. The national average is over 90%.

Troopers and dispatchers will be working overtime as part of the effort, thanks in part to a grant for $24,780 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.“Buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself and all of your passengers in a crash,” said Bill Kovarik, Nebraska Highway Safety Administrator. “I believe there’s someone counting on each and every one of us to buckle up every time we get in a vehicle so that we come back alive and safe.”According to NDOT-HSO, Nebraska ranks 4th&nbsp;worst in the United States in seat belt usage, at 81%. The national average is over 90%.

United Way of Western Nebraska to hold 'Color Dash' in Gering

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that 
interest rates will increase for the calendar quarter beginning July 1, 
2022. The rates will be:

Under the Internal Revenue Code, the rate of interest is 
determined on a quarterly basis. For taxpayers other than corporations, 
the overpayment and underpayment rate is the federal short-term rate 
plus three percentage points.

Generally, in the case of a corporation, the underpayment rate is the
 federal short-term rate plus three percentage points, and the 
overpayment rate is the federal short-term rate plus two percentage 
points. The rate for large corporate underpayments is the federal 
short-term rate plus five percentage points. The rate on the portion of a
 corporate overpayment of tax exceeding $10,000 for a taxable period is

IRS interest rates increase for the third quarter of 2022

SCOTTSBLUFF -&nbsp;Planning has begun for the 11th annual Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon, scheduled for Sept. 24. The race will again have a full marathon, half marathon, 5K run/walk, and a three-person half-marathon relay.

The Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon is the largest annual fundraiser for the WNCC Foundation which supports students, programs, and facilities at WNCC. Last year the marathon celebrated its 10th year as a premier event in Scotts Bluff County, drawing runners to the area from around the country and as far away as Kenya, Africa. WNCC Foundation Executive Director, Jennifer Reisig, is also Race Director for the marathon.

“Thanks to the generosity of our title sponsor, Platte Valley Companies, our runners, volunteers, and other sponsors, we have raised more than $450,000 in our first ten years," Reisig said. "In 2021 alone, we raised $55,142 to support student scholarships at WNCC. That’s more than any previous year of the Monument Marathon.”

Hod Kosman, President and CEO of Platte Valley Companies, said “We are honored once again to be the title sponsor and to partner with WNCC on this great part of our community that touches lives in so many positive ways. This year, race organizers unveiled a new sponsor level, the Friend of the Monument Marathon. This will replace the Mile Marker sponsor level and give a chance for more people to get involved in supporting the race. The Friend of the Monument Marathon sponsorship can be made in honor or memory of someone, and it includes recognition at Five Rocks Amphitheater on race day, two free race entries, two free tickets to the expo pasta feed on Sept. 23, an option to have a table at the expo, and a pair of Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon socks.

Two local businesses have already signed on to be a Friend of the Monument Marathon, Bellevue University and Gering Valley Plumbing &amp; Heating. Jennifer Schwab is a Monument Marathon runner, volunteer, and the Relationship Manager for Bellevue University.

“For Bellevue University, it’s about fostering and building on our partnership with WNCC," Schwab said. "We see success when WNCC is successful. The amount of money raised by the Monument Marathon to provide WNCC student scholarships is helping students to see educational opportunities that they may not have otherwise. As a long-term resident born and raised in Gering, I know that when WNCC is successful it helps our entire community and Panhandle.”

Julie Thompson helped promote the Monument Marathon in its early years at an expo in Colorado, and she is the HR Manager at Gering Valley Plumbing &amp; Heating.

“Any event that promotes and brings people to our community is something we want to support. Our owner, Bill Schlaepfer, is very involved in the community and easily says yes to events like this. We’re honored to be able to be a sponsor.”

Last year's marathon included 491 registered runners from 29 states. There are already over 150 registered runners for the 2022 race. Two runners who ran last year and are registered to run again in 2022 are Adam and Rachel Harper.

“This will be my fourth Monument Marathon and our second Monument Marathon together. What got us started running together was that our lives got so busy, and our training runs became our time together. I love that this is in our neighborhood. It’s a course that we can practice on and get comfortable with, and the course is amazingly beautiful. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to do a half marathon,” said Rachel, a fifth-grade teacher at Northfield Elementary in Gering.

“We started running together because COVID happened," Adam, an attorney who works with Legal Aid of Nebraska, said. "We could focus our efforts, and even our anxiety and stress over what was happening, on running together. Until two years ago we never had a desire to run more than four miles.”

This year the couple has a goal of running a sub two-hour half marathon. They say the beauty of the course keeps them coming back. They encourage other runners who aren’t sure if they can tackle 13 miles to ease into it over the next few months.

“We’ll build up over the next two months to a base of six miles. In July – September, we find a 10 – 12 week program where we increase miles each week. Saturday is our long run. Two years ago, every Saturday run was the most I’d ever run. For the average citizen, like me, it’s about taking it slow and steady. It’s been rewarding,” Adam said.

If runners aren’t ready this year for 13 miles, the 5K and half marathon relay are great options.

Reisig encouraged community members and longtime runners to step up to sponsor the race and help students at WNCC.

“For our runners who have run the race for years, they may opt to sponsor as a Friend of the Monument Marathon to increase the impact they have," Reisig said. "They know this race and love this race and what it does for our students and community. We were also looking for more ways for community members to connect with our runners. People love hearing the stories of who the runners are, why they came here, and where they came from. Chadron City Transit has more exciting news to share with the community. After the community public forum last week, we are now moving forward with the PILOT PROGRAM for a second Transit Bus that will be a FIXED/DEVIATED route. This is in ADDITION to the existing DEMAND route the City Transit currently runs.&nbsp; This will be effective June 1st, 2022.

The DEMAND route is Monday - Friday; 8 am - 4 pm. Calls received are dispatched immediately.

Rides to the AIRPORT are by APPOINTMENT between 8 am - 4 pm.

The FIXED/DEVIATED route is Monday - Friday; 10 am - 2pm with designated pickup locations. (i.e. if you are at Walmart and need a ride home, you can catch the bus based on the designated times listed on the schedule. If the DEMAND bus dropped you off at Walmart, you wouldn't have to call for a return ride...just hop on the FIXED route pickup).

This PILOT PROGRAM is to see 1) if a second bus is needed and 2) if the locations and times are suitable which we will adjust accordingly.

Chadron City Transit moves forward with pilot program

GORDON – Ragged Sky Productions is proud to announce the premiere of “Fortress of Sin”, a thriller featuring several native born Nebraskans in the cast and crew.

The film is the brain child of Paul Chomicki, the genre cult film actor from such comedy horrors as Deadly Xmas and Paranormal Halloween. While in Los Angeles, Paul befriended Nebraska filmmaker, Christian Voss. Voss told Chomicki his plans to return home to Nebraska, where films could be make easier while utilizing the vast wealth of local talents.

Frequent collaborator, Dave Campfield, suggested that Nebraska would make the perfect backdrop for Chomicki’s screenplay Fortress of Sin, a story that chronicles one fathers search for his daughter across haunting and powerful backdrops. Prepped with a budget of under $8,000, Voss, Chomicki and Campfield assembled a team that included regional theater director and actor Ryan Lovell. “I received a call from Christian Voss about appearing in a local film, and I jumped at the opportunity.”, said Lovell. “I've always been a stage actor with only one small film role to my credit, so I was looking forward to the opportunity to be in front of a camera again.” Ryan became so instrumental in production, and likewise took on the job as Assistant Director.

The cast also includes Katie Otten from Omaha, who’s body of film work continues to grow. Says Katie “The best part of this entire experience was the friendships that forged from being on screen with others who love it as much as you do. I will cherish that forever.”

Fortress of Sin deals an issue relevant to many of those who live in Nebraska and South Dakota regions, the disappearance of many woman of Native American heritage. “Fortress” hopes to shine some light on the situation. It’s already won several international awards at festivals, including Best Feature Film at the Eastern Europe Film Fest.

Fortress of Sin will be screening June 11 at 7 p.m. at the Gordon Theater. Several of the stars will be in attendance. The film will be released to streaming and DVD later that month by Wild Eye Releasing.

CHADRON — As Intralinks nears the completion of their Chadron office, they hired two new employees: Robert Sullivan as a Network Specialist and Grace Sorenson as a Receptionist. Intralinks, which provides services for personal and business computer needs, is opening a new Chadron location at 130 West 3rd Street, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They will be having an open house on June 9 from 2-6 p.m. with food, drinks, and a prize wheel, with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m.

Robert Sullivan, Network Specialist, grew up in Bellflower, California. Robert has also lived in Arizona, Colorado and moved to the northern Nebraska panhandle in 2019. Robert has an AA Degree from Pueblo Community College and Attended Western Governors University for networking and currently holds A+ certification. Robert has many years of technology experience, which includes businesses and schools from desktop support, networking, to being a Director of Technology at a large school district. Robert’s enjoys spending time with his family: wife Lauri, son Patrick and his family, son Michael and his friends, as well as fishing and riding his motorcycle.

Grace Sorenson, Receptionist, grew up in Chadron, Nebraska. She graduated from Chadron High School in 2020 and is now a student at the University of Notre Dame where she is majoring in English and minoring in History. She is home for the summer. In the fall, she will be studying abroad for a semester in London. Grace enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as reading.

Intralinks opened in Gering in 1998 and has been providing computer services to the Nebraska Panhandle ever since. The company is currently run by Jeff Peck, President and Network Specialist, and Scott Phillips, Vice President and Network Specialist. Network Specialist Perry Delzer has been servicing Chadron since 2019 before Intralinks established a permanent location in Chadron.

Nebraskans will enjoy this summer boating on waters across the state. To mark National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is urging boaters to keep safety the top priority.

Boaters and paddlers should not take safety for granted. Game and Parks suggests ways boaters may reduce the risk of incidents and help ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the water.

Before Launching&nbsp;– Ensure your boat is in good running condition. Get the boat registered and, if a nonresident, purchase an Aquatic Invasive Species sticker on Game and Parks’ website. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. Paddlers of kayaks or canoes should physically inspect their planned take-out point to make sure it is accessible.

Wear a Life Jacket&nbsp;– Children under age 13 and anybody on a personal watercraft are required by law to wear a United States Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device. People being towed by a boat on skis, a tube, or other similar device also must wear a life jacket. Every vessel, except sailboards, must carry a flotation device for each person on board.

Be Wary of Surroundings&nbsp;– Look around for other boats, personal watercraft, swimmers, stumps and other hazards. Speeds in excess of 5 mph are prohibited if within 30 yards of any other vessel, swimming area or dock. If padding a kayak or canoe, be aware of possible debris below the surface or under bridges.

Have All Required Safety Equipment&nbsp;– Life jackets, throw cushions, fire extinguishers and bailing devices are required on most boats.

Avoid Alcohol&nbsp;– Boat operators can become impaired with less alcohol than motor vehicle drivers due to heat and dehydration. Boating Under the Influence is a criminal violation and is enforced actively.

Watch the Weather&nbsp;– Storms can pop up quickly in Nebraska. Check the weather in advance and monitor it during the day, if necessary.

Avoid Hypothermia&nbsp;– Even though temperatures are rising, the water still can be cold. Hypothermia is caused by exposure to cold weather or water. Take caution to prevent hypothermia.

Legal Operators&nbsp;– Anyone born after Dec. 31, 1985, who operates a motorboat or personal watercraft in Nebraska must have successfully completed the Nebraska boating safety course.
