BLACK HAWK, S.D. (AP) — A second phase of geophysical tests in a Rapid City area neighborhood where a sinkhole exposed an abandoned mine shows 30 additional homes may be affected. 

The sinkhole that exposed the old gypsum mine opened in April 2020 in the Black Hawk neighborhood where it has already forced 40 people to evacuate from 15 homes. 

Geoscientist Mohamed Khalil, with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, says the second phase shows the seasonal fluctuation of the groundwater table over the past few decades has created conditions for a sinkhole in any weak spot. 

The Fitzgerald Law Firm released the latest report on the geophysical testing in the neighborhood.

 It represents homeowners who have filed lawsuits in relation to the sinkhole.

Additional homes may be at risk where South Dakota sinkhole exposed mine

Chadron - Chadron Public Library is resuming club activities starting Friday, Oct. 1. That day at 3:30 p.m. there will be a meeting of the Lego Club. From then on the Lego Club will meet at the same hour every first Friday of each month. 

Board Game Club will meet the second Friday of each month (Oct. 8) at 3:30 p.m.

More than 30 members and guests attended the 2021 Annual meeting of the Heartland Expressway Association. The luncheon, held in Scottsbluff Wednesday Sept. 22 featured presentations from several speakers.

HEA Board Chair Deb Cottier moderated the meeting and shared highlights of the past year, including the strategic planning process that led to the request for proposals to develop a new Communications plan for the organization.

Cathy Shull of Sage Strategies (and fellow Ports to Plains Board member), was awarded the contract and briefed the group on the plan, which is still in progress. Identifying markets, beefing up the social media presence and overall awareness of the organization are the main goals of the plan. With Shull’s assistance, an aggressive amount of work will be accomplished in the next 6-8 months.

John Ricks, Director of the Nebraska Tourism Commission spoke regarding the importance (since the pandemic) of surface transportation to the new found ‘exploring’ activities of visitors to the area. Western Nebraska has much of what visitors are looking for, and better roads makes it easier to improve our visitation numbers.

John Selmer, the new Director of the Nebraska Department of Transportation shared his background and the philosophy he brings to the position. His many years of experience in Iowa provide a good understanding of the balance between rural and urban needs. He is becoming more familiar with the vast number of miles of roads in Western Nebraska that require maintenance as well as consideration for additional miles. He welcomed the input from the HEA organization and is ready to engage in conversations regarding the Heartland Expressway as the department tries to be proactive about the future of transportation needs.

One highlight of the luncheon was the unveiling (officially) of the new logo for the organization, which has not be updated since the 1990. The Board of Directors continues to meet monthly, moving the meetings from one end of the corridor to the other. A video developed by Shull of Sage Strategies highlights the relationship between Ports to Plains and the Heartland Expressway. Heartland Expressway annual meeting held in Scottsbluff

SIDNEY&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Carrier Enforcement Division conducted surprise commercial vehicle inspections today in Sidney and the surrounding area in Cheyenne County.

During the special enforcement effort, the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team conducted four vehicle inspections. Troopers presented a CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) sticker to one vehicle throughout the day, indicating the vehicle had no critical safety violations.

Troopers discovered 11 violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and state law. Troopers placed two vehicles out of service (not allowed to return to the road). Vehicles are placed out of service for a variety of reasons relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that pose immediate safety risks. No drivers were placed out of service.

The surprise inspections target commercial vehicles that might not travel outside the city or pass through weigh stations as part of their regular routes.

The MAPS Team is funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Troopers check for compliance with federal safety regulations and enforce laws pertaining to weight, size, registration, dyed fuels, and permits associated with commercial vehicles. The MAPS Team was implemented in 1998 and consists of troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division.

Surprise truck inspections held in Cheyenne County

CHADRON – Chadron State College will celebrate Homecoming from Oct. 4-9 with a theme of the Soaring 20s. Alumni events include a variety of receptions and reunions, while student have planned a large slate of activities.

Monday, Oct. 4, will feature Tailgating by CSC clubs in the parking lot south of Beebe Stadium at 5:30 p.m. A double feature movie night will start at 7 p.m.&nbsp;on the video board at Elliott Field. The best tailgate will earn a cash prize for the club.

Wednesday, Oct. 6, will feature a campus wide scavenger hunt. All interested teams should meet at the Student Senate Office in the Student Center for registration at 6 p.m. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Students on the top three teams will receive cash prizes.

Thursday, Oct. 7, the Pep Rally will take place on Elliott Field at 7 p.m. with the Coronation of Homecoming Royalty immediately afterward.

The Cardinal Key National Honor Society president will share the history of lighting C-Hill. Participants in the tradition are asked to bring good hiking shoes and lanterns, flashlights, or phones for light.&nbsp;

Later that evening, the Student Center Pit will host a dance in the Student Center Ballroom following the lighting of C-Hill.

Friday, Oct. 8, during the volleyball match against New Mexico Highlands in the Chicoine Center at 6 p.m. the Homecoming Committee will have a booth with give-away items for CSC students. The best fans of the volleyball game, determined by judges in the crowd, will earn cash prizes.

Saturday, Oct. 9, the Homecoming parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at Tenth and Main Street. Parade entries will proceed north on Main Street. The Blue Key National Honor Society will honor Chadron’s first responders as co-marshals of the parade and their vehicles will lead the procession.

According to Dr. John Wojcik, CSC’s Director of Bands, the CSC Eagle Band and the following high school bands will march in the parade: Edgemont, S.D., Custer, S.D., Kimball, Neb., Banner County, Neb., and Bayard. Two additional high school bands, Sterling, Colo., and Hay Springs, Neb., &nbsp;and three students from Gordon-Rushville will perform during the football game.

During the football game against CSU-Pueblo at 1 p.m., the Homecoming Committee will have a booth with give-away items for CSC students and best student fans of the football game, determined by judges in the crowd, will earn cash prizes.

Alliance – Despite providing a wide range of social, economic and environmental benefits, most Nebraska community forests have been in steady and sometimes dramatic decline. Many challenges contribute, including extreme weather, insects, disease and lack of diversity. The Emerald Ash borer is the latest major challenge added to the list.

In an effort to stop this decline and increase community forest resilience, the Free Trees program grants up to 10 high quality trees for tree-related educational events and community celebrations promoting trees and fall planting. In addition to planting more trees, the program goals include increasing appreciation and awareness of the value of community forests in Nebraska. Special emphasis is placed on species diversity and higher impact projects, especially street planting projects in neighborhoods of highest need.

Thanks to the Free Trees for Fall Planting program, an effort of the Nebraska Forest Service and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, the City of Alliance received and has planted 10 trees in the Homestead Subdivision. 

The City of Alliance believes that planting these trees will help the adjacent housing development by providing a natural fence and visual separation from non-residential uses, make development of empty lots more appealing, and provide shade and fresh air. These trees will grow as our community grows.

Free Trees for Fall Planting is supported by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum’s Trees for Nebraska Towns Initiative founded by the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

City of Alliance receives 'Free Trees for Fall Planting'

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Health care officials are lodging complaints about a reopened transfer center intended to help Nebraska hospitals find places to send patients who need additional care as COVID-19 cases have surged in recent weeks. 

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that officials at Lincoln's Bryan Health and at smaller hospitals around the state have complained that the transfer center was not proving helpful in cases where very sick patients need to get to a larger hospital. 

In some cases, hospital staff report finding no help from the system and ended up making numerous calls themselves to find a bed.

This Labor Day weekend, the Scottsbluff Police Department participated in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over impaired driving awareness campaign, which ran from Aug. 20 through Sept. 6. 

Eleven Scottsbluff Police Officers worked a total of 198 hours of traffic enforcement during this campaign.

Scottsbluff police release 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' results

In Omaha, a trooper observed a motorcycle speeding near 42nd&nbsp;and L Streets. The motorcycle was traveling at 63 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the motorcycle rider refused to yield and fled. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The motorcycle accelerated southbound on 42nd&nbsp;at a high rate of speed, traveling in a reckless manner. The rider eventually lost control and laid the motorcycle down near 53rd&nbsp;and Q streets. The rider was then taken into custody without further incident. The rider, Michael McCart, 40, of Bellevue, was lodged in Douglas County Jail for felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, driving under the influence, driving under suspension, and no motorcycle license.

In Saunders County, troopers responded to a single motorcycle crash at the intersection of Highway 77 and Highway 92, near Mead. The crash occurred at approximately 8:25 p.m. Upon arrival, troopers found several packages of a white powder substance laying near the motorcycle. The rider, Kurt Heckenliable, 50, of Beaver Crossing, was transported to Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha

The powder substance field-tested as methamphetamine. It total, troopers located more than 10 pounds of methamphetamine at the scene. Heckenliable will be lodged in Saunders County Jail on multiple drug-related changes once he is released from the hospital.

In Cheyenne County, a trooper observed a Volkswagen Jetta speeding on Interstate 80 at mile marker 69, near Sunol. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed a small amount of marijuana, as well as more than 500 pills of ecstasy and several small containers which contained methamphetamine, codeine, THC, and pharmaceutical controlled substances.

The driver, Maya Givens, 23, of Puyallup, Washington, and a 17-year-old passenger were both taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver. They were both lodged in Cheyenne County Jail.

PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) — The Oglala Sioux Tribe is asking all tribal members on the Pine Ridge Reservation to shelter in place following a spike in COVID-19 cases. 

The initial stay-at-home order issued earlier this week by Oglala Vice President Alicia Mousseau was approved Wednesday by the tribal council on a 14-4 vote. 

The order will remain in place until the tribal council rescinds it. 

The order allows only essential business to operate and only at 25% capacity. 

It includes a mask mandate and limits gatherings to no more than 10 people, the Rapid City Journal reported. 

Tribal health officials say there has been 58 new cases of COVID-19 over a two-week period. 

There are 64 active cases on the reservation.

The Strengths methodology gives you a framework for capitalizing on those innate talents, as well as how to leverage the talents of others. Leadership Chadron accepting applications

CHADRON – The cloth patches that military service members put on the shoulders of their uniforms are important symbols for soldiers and carry a wealth of historical information.

That’s the view of Mark Hunt, Chadron State College Security Supervisor, who is an avid collector of shoulder patches and other American military insignia.

The insignia on military uniforms is America’s attempt to have some connection to heraldry, Hunt said.

“We didn’t have the knights, but the symbolism is there on the shoulders of our service members,” he said.

Hunt, a former Nebraska high school teacher and coach who also worked as a police officer before coming to CSC in 2019, has become well versed in the history and value of military insignia through more than two decades of collecting. Now a regional vice president for the American Society of Military Insignia Collectors (ASMIC), he has written articles for ASMIC publications and has displayed items from his collection at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. An article Hunt wrote detailing the story of medals awarded to Nebraska National Guard members for service on the Mexican border in 1917 was published in the Spring 2021 issue of Nebraska History magazine.&nbsp;

Hunt first started collecting military insignia when he received a box of medals following the death of his grandfather, a World War II veteran. After years of searching at antique stores, flea markets, and online, his collection now comprises thousands of items. The items include shoulder patches from military units and police departments, medals, uniforms, and other items, but no weaponry or ordinance.

After starting with military medals like those from his grandfather, Hunt soon found that desired pieces were out of his price range, so he shifted to shoulder patches.

“I realized I could pick up cloth shoulder patches for a quarter or 50 cents. For 10 dollars I could get a lot,” he said.

Every person who served in the military received several patches but often thought little of their value, until years after leaving the service, according to Hunt. Collecting shoulder patches and other military insignia became more common in the years after World War II, and has grown ever since, he said.

Though initially only aware of basic information about shoulder patches, such as the unit they represented, Hunt became more interested in the history of the insignia after starting work on a master’s degree. He eventually began writing articles about what he discovered.

Most collectors now agree that the first American military unit patches date back to the Civil War, said Hunt, but the first true shoulder patches come from World War I, when soldiers began creating and wearing cloth patches in designs that represented their unit.

“The 81st Infantry Division, the Wildcat Division out of North Carolina, was really the first,” he said. “Everything was done by hand. Those guys took an old Army blanket, cut out a wildcat design, and sewed it on.”

General John J. Pershing, commander of American forces in Europe during World War I, noticed the sense of identity and pride the insignia fostered, and ordered all units in his command to have their own designs. The insignia they created often incorporated images representing the region the soldiers came from, Hunt said.

“The 36th Infantry Division, from Oklahoma and Texas, was an arrowhead with a ‘T’ in it. They still use that today,” he said.

By the time of World War II, most unit patches were machine-made and officially sanctioned, but sometimes soldiers would commission local manufacturers to make patches, which they could sell or trade to others in their unit.

“You have official and unofficial (patches),” Hunt said.

After the war ended, some German firms used their machinery to make shoulder patches for American troops, often using metal-clad thread and intricate designs. “The artwork and design is incredible.” Hunt said. “Some of those pieces could bring thousands of dollars. It depends on the workmanship and the unit.”

The Vietnam war brought more changes, including replacement of full color patches with subdued green and black designs that blended more with jungle camouflage. Official patches acquired finished edges in the 1960s, but many soldiers serving in Southeast Asia also had patches made by local workers.

“There was a plethora of unofficial patches,” Hunt said.

While many patches exist from the largest U.S. military units, like the 101st Airborne Division, others are rare, Hunt said.

Hunt doesn’t have an estimate of the value of his collection, which he has carefully organized in file cabinets, and sealed in acid-free materials to keep them from deteriorating. He takes pleasure in showing the items he has and talking about their history.

“My stuff is for people to see,” he said.

Hunt and his son, a history teacher in Malcom, Nebraska, attend trade shows that provide a chance to buy, sell, and trade with other memorabilia collectors. At shows, he sometimes gives patches away to younger children, to get them interested in history and collecting.

While Hunt believes conflict is part of human nature, he said collecting military insignia and memorabilia doesn’t imply promoting war.

“I’m not glorifying war, but I’m paying honor to those who served,” he said

Grandfather’s medals led CSC Security Supervisor to collecting

Dobby Lee had several goals when he established the Frontier Town. He wanted to recreate the town of his childhood. He had extensive antique collections to preserve and display. But mostly, Dobby was interested in history and education.

Several schools with students of all ages visit Dobby’s Frontier Town to learn more about a bygone era. If their teachers are familiar with the Town, they may conduct their own tours. Sometimes small groups are led through buildings, learning the highlights and hearing a few of the stories that go with each.

For more than thirty years Alliance fourth graders have visited Dobby’s Frontier Town on a field trip as they are learning more about Nebraska history. They dress in pioneer clothing, bring their lunches in buckets, and hop on the bus. They’ll spend the day in a community with no electricity, no heat or air conditioning, and no flushing toilets. Groups of about fifteen move through different stations in the Town, where volunteers share stories about life 100 years ago.

In the German Evangelical Immanuel Lutheran Church students hear about the history of the church, built in Alliance in 1912. What else happened in 1912? Life Savers were invented – peppermint flavor only. Bubble gum was invented. It was originally called Flibber Flubber, but later renamed the Double Bubble. Churches in pioneer towns also served as schools and meeting halls.

A quick tour of the west town means kids visit the saloon, hear about blacksmiths, look at the forms used to create shoes in the cobbler shop, see trays of teeth in the dental office, medical equipment in the doctor’s office, view coffins in the funeral parlor. If they get too mouthy, they better be careful they don’t get locked in the jail!

Students sit in old wooden desks in the schoolhouse. They’ll get a few lessons the way they might have been taught decades ago. A highlight is learning to play some of the games their great grandparents might have enjoyed – things like jacks or pick-up sticks.

The chuckwagon is where students learn about the cattle drives of the late 1800’s. A good cook was highly prized. The chuckwagon stored bedrolls and personal items of the cowhands. Chuckwagon food typically consisted of dried beans, coffee, dried apples, flour and sourdough starter for biscuits, and meat that was salted, dried, or smoked. A water barrel was attached to the wagon and canvas was hung underneath to carry firewood or, more likely, cow pies.

Students then move to the two homes in the northwest corner of Dobby’s Frontier Town. The crude cabin was built by the first Black homesteader in Nebraska. Robert Anderson was born a slave, enlisted in the Union Army, and finally settled near Hemingford. By 1900 he was a prosperous landowner. The hay bale house is similar to many built in the Sandhills where sod

and lumber were not available. Students compare the two homes and their furnishings, representing times that were about thirty years apart.

The highlight of the field trip is in the main house. The crew from Steph’s Studio work with the fourth graders to create photograms. Students are given trays with special paper and a variety of small objects they can arrange. Half the group takes their finished trays to the garage, which has been converted to a dark room. Kids can see their artistic creations gradually appear as white shapes on a black background as their trays are exposed to chemicals. The other half learns about the history of photography. They’ll see the first photos taken in the early 1800’s, early motion pictures using a zoetrope, and early color photos, all preceding the digital photography used today. They also get to look through stereoscopes, those early 3-D images our grandparents enjoyed, before they trade places and head to the dark room.

Remember that Dobby’s is funded by donations and relies on volunteers for special events, tours, and maintenance. Dobby’s Frontier Town closes for the season on October 1 every year, reopening May 1. Therefore, this will be the last column about the buildings and special artifacts until May, 2022.

SCOTTSBLUFF&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Carrier Enforcement Division conducted surprise commercial vehicle inspections today in Scottsbluff and the surrounding area in Scotts Bluff County.

During the special enforcement effort, the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team conducted seven vehicle inspections. Troopers presented a CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) sticker to two vehicles or trailers throughout the day, indicating the vehicle had no critical safety violations.

Troopers discovered 28 violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and state law. Troopers placed two vehicles out of service (not allowed to return to the road). Vehicles are placed out of service for a variety of reasons relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that pose immediate safety risks. No drivers were placed out of service.

The MAPS Team was implemented in 1998 and consists of troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division.

Surprise truck inspections held in Scotts Bluff County

We’ve come a long way over the last year.&nbsp; Nebraska has managed the coronavirus pandemic without lockdowns, without statewide mandates, and without vaccine passports.&nbsp; We have the third-lowest fatality rate from COVID-19 in the country.&nbsp; And we’ve fully vaccinated 87.5% of our 65+ population.&nbsp;

I encourage all eligible Nebraskans to get vaccinated.&nbsp; We know the vaccines are effective in reducing severe cases, hospitalizations, and death.&nbsp; The vaccine is especially critical for elderly Nebraskans.&nbsp; Over eighty percent of the deaths we’ve seen in Nebraska have been among those 65+.&nbsp; Whatever your age and health status, please consult your doctor and have a conversation about the vaccine.&nbsp;

While we’ve protected hospital capacity and encouraged vaccination, the State of Nebraska has avoided using the heavy hand of government to mandate health requirements.&nbsp; This is a stark contrast to the Biden-Harris Administration’s approach.&nbsp; Earlier this month, President Biden announced that employers with 100 or more employees would be forced to require proof of vaccination—or submit to an onerous testing regimen—as a condition of employment.&nbsp; The President’s vaccine mandate is a stunning violation of personal freedom and a blatant abuse of the federal government’s power.&nbsp;

The vaccine mandate puts working Americans in an unfair position.&nbsp; No one should have to choose between losing the job that feeds their family or getting a shot that many do not want or feel uncertain about. &nbsp;Some people have told me they’re choosing not to get the vaccine right away because they don’t know who to believe.&nbsp; The CDC has reversed course on everything from the need to deep-clean surfaces, to the importance of wearing masks outdoors, to the necessity of face coverings for vaccinated Americans.&nbsp; This has undermined public trust.

President Biden’s vaccine mandate contradicts his previous statements and undermines trust in his administration.&nbsp; In December 2020, he said “I don't think [the vaccine] should be mandatory. &nbsp;I wouldn't demand it to be mandatory.”&nbsp; In July, the President’s press secretary, Jen Psaki, said vaccine mandates are “not the role of the federal government.”&nbsp; Chief Medical Advisor to the President, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has also flip-flopped on vaccine mandates.&nbsp; Last month, he said, “I feel that we should not have central [vaccine] mandates from the federal government.” &nbsp;He also is on record as saying, “I don't see [a vaccine mandate] on a national level merely because of all the situations you have upon encroaching upon a person's freedom to make their own choice of their own health.”&nbsp; These about-faces have caused many people around the country to distrust political leaders and public health officials.&nbsp;

We must also consider that it takes time to educate the public.&nbsp; A typical vaccine can take up to 10–15 years to develop.&nbsp; While it was an amazing scientific feat to develop this vaccine in under a year, people need to be able to digest information about it.&nbsp; For example, it’s not yet clear how natural immunity from prior infection compares to vaccine immunity.&nbsp; Some who have already been infected want to learn more before being vaccinated. &nbsp;Others are uncertain how vaccination may affect an existing health condition.&nbsp; As the information on vaccines disseminates, it’s going to take time to give people the level of comfort they need to get vaccinated.&nbsp; It’s wrong for government to threaten Americans with the loss of their job if they don’t want to get vaccinated.&nbsp;

In addition to dictating the personal health choices of workers, the vaccine mandate puts businesses in a difficult position.&nbsp; It turns employers into the government’s health police.&nbsp; If the mandate stands, it will create a dangerous precedent.&nbsp; Any administration will be able to declare an emergency, publish OSHA rules, and make private businesses enforce federal policies. &nbsp;The vaccine mandate also imposes a huge cost on businesses, many of whom are now scrambling to find a way to pay for the frequent testing that must be done for workers who choose not to vaccinate.

Vaccination is a very personal choice and trying to threaten people into compliance breeds resentment without producing the intended result.&nbsp; Some people considering vaccination will not get the shot now because they feel bullied by the government.&nbsp; Others are willing to quit their jobs rather than be forced to vaccinate.&nbsp; Ultimately, the vaccine mandate is counterproductive.&nbsp; In fact, fewer Nebraskans sought vaccinations the week&nbsp;after&nbsp;Biden’s vaccine mandate announcement than the week before.&nbsp;

The State of Nebraska will muster all of the tools at our disposal to oppose this overreaching mandate.&nbsp; On September 16th, the Attorneys General (AGs) of 24 states—including Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson—sent a letter to President Biden condemning his vaccine mandate. &nbsp;They provided evidence to demonstrate that the mandate is illegal.&nbsp; The AGs accused the President of reaching for “new and startlingly broad powers” in his attempt to impose the “unlawful and harmful” mandate, and they pledged to “seek every available legal option to hold [the President] accountable and uphold the rule of law.”

And we’ve fully vaccinated 87.5% of our 65+ population.&nbsp;I encourage all eligible Nebraskans to get vaccinated.&nbsp; We know the vaccines are effective in reducing severe cases, hospitalizations, and death.&nbsp; The vaccine is especially critical for elderly Nebraskans.&nbsp; Over eighty percent of the deaths we’ve seen in Nebraska have been among those 65+.&nbsp; Whatever your age and health status, please consult your doctor and have a conversation about the vaccine.&nbsp;While we’ve protected hospital capacity and encouraged vaccination, the State of Nebraska has avoided using the heavy hand of government to mandate health requirements.&nbsp; This is a stark contrast to the Biden-Harris Administration’s approach.&nbsp; Earlier this month, President Biden announced that employers with 100 or more employees would be forced to require proof of vaccination—or submit to an onerous testing regimen—as a condition of employment.&nbsp; The President’s vaccine mandate is a stunning violation of personal freedom and a blatant abuse of the federal government’s power.&nbsp;The vaccine mandate puts working Americans in an unfair position.&nbsp; Gov. Ricketts: Taking personal responsibility

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers are still at a stalemate over how to draw new congressional and legislative maps despite a looming deadline that could force them to postpone the decision until next year and delay the May primary election.

 Lawmakers have until Saturday to advance both measures, or else Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers has promised to end their special session, forcing them to resume the debate during their next regular session in January. 

Delaying the new maps until next year would force state officials to reschedule the primary.

 At issue with the maps are accusations that Republicans and Democrats are trying to draw political boundaries in ways that benefit their party.

GERING, Neb. -- With school back in session, many Nebraska students will be fueled by fresh beef, fruits and vegetables sourced from local farms. Mary Carman, director of food services for the Gering public school district, has spent the past three years developing a farm-to-school program. Instead of using processed food shipped in from out of state, her team now uses locally-produced, nutrient-rich foods and prepares meals from scratch. Carman recently added local organic honey for cafeteria recipes. "The whole point is to get the freshest food to the kids, and also use it as an educational tool for teachers to teach kids about where food comes from, how it's grown," Carman explained. Nebraska students also are selling garden harvests at farmers markets, and some local farmers help students grow seedlings in their greenhouses. More school cafeterias soon could be transformed into both the largest classrooms and restaurants in Nebraska. During the last legislative session, senators created a state farm-to-school program, and this month the initiative added its first full-time employee. In June, the University of Nebraska Extension and other partners hosted the first statewide&nbsp;<a href="https://foodsystems.unl.edu/farm-to-school" target="_blank">Farm-to-School Institute</a>, designed to help schools procure local food and teach kids how it's grown. Justin Carter, project associate at the Center for Rural Affairs, said farm-to-school is a good investment for local economies. When schools buy directly from local farmers, the money goes right back into communities. "For each dollar invested in farm-to-school, it stimulates an additional 60 cents to $2.16 in local economic activity," Carter reported. For school food directors interested in launching their own program, Carman encouraged patience and getting out into the community. She suggested farmers markets are a good place to start, and noted most producers are very interested in exploring additional revenue streams. "It's a win for the farmers," Carman asserted. "A school district in any rural town, or anywhere, is usually your biggest restaurant. We're feeding thousands of kids a day."

Chadron Police Chief Rick Hickstein said Tyler skaggs has been found and is safe in Chadron.&nbsp;

On Sept. 21 at 9:45 p.m. the Chadron Police Department received a report of a missing juvenile.

The reporting party advised 16-year-old Tyler Skaggs ran away from their vehicle earlier in the day at approximately 4:45 p.m. and had not returned home. 

"The Chadron Police Department has conducted interviews and been checking residences of friends in an attempt to locate Tyler Skaggs, but we have been unable to locate Tyler," Chadron Police Chief Rick&nbsp;Hickstein said. "We are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Tyler."

 If anyone sees Skaggs or knows where he may be located, please contact your local law enforcement agency or the Chadron Police Department at (308) 432-0510.

Skaggs is 6’1” tall and 180lbs with brown hair and blue eyes.

Skaggs was last seen wearing the same clothing as in the picture above.

UPDATE: Chadron police seek public's help in locating missing teen

Panhandle Post has received word&nbsp; that the Hemingford vs Sutherland football game scheduled for Friday, Sept. 24 has been cancelled. Hemingford Schools posted the following release on their website Wednesday morning.&nbsp;

"The decision was made to cancel our game Friday vs. Sutherland.

This was a difficult decision to make, but one that was made for student-athlete safety. We cannot safely field a team this week. 

Our student-athletes have been battling through low numbers all season, but the number of student-athletes missing practice this week due to injury is higher and drives our numbers even lower. 

We will still have practice and will continue to work together as a TEAM. We will re-evaluate for Perkins County early next week."

Hemingford has remaining games at Perkins County, Oct 1 and home vs Bayard, Oct. 7. The game vs Kimball. Oct. 15 was cancelled earlier this month.&nbsp; &nbsp;As stated, Hemingford will re-evaluate their remaining games next week.&nbsp;

Platte Valley Bank celebrates anniversary with giveaway

On Sept. 19 at approximately 12 a.m. Chadron Police Officer Colin Deines made a traffic stop on a white four-door sedan for failing to stop at a stop sign located at Third and Bordeaux Street. 

Deines detected the odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle.

Deines searched the vehicle and found a loaded .40 caliber handgun under the driver’s seat. 

The handgun had been reported stolen out of South Dakota. 

"The driver was placed under arrest and during a search of his person, several grams of suspected cocaine were located," Chadron Police Chief Rick  Hickstein said. "Officers of the Chadron Police Department then obtained a search warrant for the white four-door sedan and towed it to the Chadron Police Department for further processing. Inside the trunk of the vehicle officers located a small amount of marijuana, a bag of cocaine, a digital scale and packaging materials."

20-year-old Jaylon L. Jackson of Rapid City, South Dakota was placed under arrest for Possession of a Stolen Firearm (Class IIA Felony), Possession of a Concealed Weapon (Class I Misdemeanor), Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver (Class IC Felony), Possession of Marijuana less than one ounce (Infraction). 

Jackson was transported to the Dawes County Jail and bond was set at 10% of $100,000.
