SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Detailed population data released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows South Dakota’s cities fueled the state’s population growth over the last decade. 

The data will form the basis for the state’s new legislative boundaries. The state’s three most populous counties — Minnehaha, Lincoln and Pennington — accounted for most of the population growth. 

Lincoln County, which contains parts of Sioux Falls and its surrounding communities, saw the fastest growth, increasing by 45% to 65,161 people.

 The trend means that legislative power will shift towards cities because each legislative district must contain roughly the same number of people.

 Lawmakers tasked with drawing new boundaries for legislative districts said they will begin to pour over the data in earnest later this month.

Ogallala performing maintenance on water system next week

SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — Officials in southwestern Nebraska say speed appeared to have been a factor in a crash this week that killed a Sidney man. 

The Cheyenne County Attorney's Office says 37-year-old Shane Marron, of Sidney, died at the scene of the early Wednesday morning crash on a road near the former headquarters of outdoor outfitter Cabela's.

 Police say Marron was driving a sport utility vehicle at high rate of speed when it went off the road, overcorrected and flipped end-over-end.

 Investigators say Marron was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the SUV.

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will begin a nearly $3.5 million boating access improvement project Aug. 16 at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area.

To accommodate construction, the Martin Bay Bayside Boat Ramp and Beach Area No. 3 temporarily will be closed to the public until early 2022. Boaters in that area will be able to access Lake McConaughy from the Martin Bay Low Water Boat Ramp, which will open to the public at the same time of the temporary closure.

While reservations for campsites in Beach Area No. 3 will be closed, beginning Aug. 16, 40 campsites have been added to other beach areas to continue providing overnight beach camping opportunities for guests. Construction also will take place at the Cedar View Bayside Boat Ramp, which was taken out of service in early August due to low water levels.

Additionally, the Martin Bay Campground temporarily will close to the public beginning Sept. 8, to accommodate the project.

The project will improve boating accessibility and create one of Nebraska’s first motorized water trail systems at the state’s largest reservoir. It is being constructed by Myers Construction Inc. of Broken Bow, and designed by Felzburg, Holt &amp; Ullegiv, with offices in Nebraska and Colorado.

A motorized water trail is a marked route on navigable waters for recreational use. Improved boating access sites, once completed at opposite ends of the reservoir, will be the first element of the motorized water trail and will continue to promote the western Nebraska recreation area and reservoir as a prime travel destination for boaters from around the Midwest.

Martin Bay’s bayside ramp improvements will include:

• a steeper, two-lane boat ramp with turnaround and boat staging area;

• accessible parking added to the existing lot, which also will get repairs and striping; and

• a flush restroom, fish-cleaning station, area lighting, loading ramps and boat dock.

Cedar View’s bayside ramp improvements will include:

• an extension to the existing boat ramp;

• surface repairs and striping for the existing parking lot;

• an exit lane at the top of the ramp to improve traffic flow; and

• a cement vault latrine, loading ramp, boat dock and area lighting.

Both projects are expected to be completed by summer 2022, and the areas will be closed to the public during that time. Originally slated to begin in late 2020 and early 2021, the project was delayed due to high water levels.

Severe weather possible for portions of Panhandle

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska prisons officials confirm that an inmate hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19 has died.

 The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said in a news release that the man died Thursday in a Lincoln hospital. 

The department did not give the inmate's name, citing privacy issues, even though the department routinely names inmates who die in custody. 

The agency said only that the man was in his 50s and had underlying medical conditions. 

The department also said his cause of death had not been determined, even though he had COVID-19. 

The man had been sentenced for possession of child pornography in Box Butte County.

The U.S. Forest Service says crews will continue to patrol and mop up following containment of the Kirk Hill fire. 

Smoke is expected to be present for the next several days. 

The fire burned approximately 80 acres (32 hectares). No structures were lost in the fire.

 Meanwhile, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people into the region.

As schools return to session and park staffing levels become more limited, park managers must reduce hours of operation and services. “We have had a tremendous and busy year in Nebraska’s state parks and recreation areas,” said Jim Swenson, state parks administrator. “We appreciate everyone’s support and patience as we make necessary changes to adapt to very limited staffing levels right now, while still providing many excellent opportunities for day use that many people enjoy, such as fishing, hiking, picnicking, boating and more.”

Nebraska state parks transition to fall hours including Lake Mac, Minatare

CHADRON – Chadron State College graduate student Kaci Waugh recently completed a summer internship with Bailey Lauerman, an Omaha-based creative agency, as a result of participating in Meet the Pros in&nbsp;March. During the conference, students from CSC and other institutions meet professionals in their career field who review their resumes or portfolios, offer advice, and answer questions.

“I was really grateful for the opportunity and it turned out to be something so much more than I thought it would be,” Waugh said. “Working on research and just seeing how people work together to create something is so interesting.”

Her interest in Bailey Lauerman originated when she heard CEO Greg Andersen speak during Meet the Pros.

“I was really impressed by&nbsp;his story and the company.&nbsp;I took it upon myself to do a little more research from there,” Waugh said.

Waugh was matched with Abby Meyer from Bailey Lauerman.

“She gave me a little more insight and then from there we got connected on LinkedIn and continued to stay in touch. During the summer, I looked for opportunities for internships, saw they had one and applied,” Waugh said.

Waugh completed several rounds of interviews and was offered one of six internship positions.

“Kaci took the initiative to follow up after Meet the Pros and connect with professionals. That’s what it takes. She applied what she learned,” said Dr. Shaunda French-Collins, adviser for The Big Event. “I'm proud of Kaci because this is well deserved. She did all the things we hope students will do.”

Waugh worked for four weeks with a team of interns and professionals at Bailey Lauerman to create a pro bono proposal for one of the firm’s existing clients, Opera Omaha. The team made its final presentation Aug. 6. She&nbsp;said the client was really excited with the ideas and depth of research involved in the proposal.

Waugh is also intrigued by the culture of the organization.

“Culture is something that's super important to them. They have a culture club and create events and have fun gatherings. It's great be part of something like that,” Waugh said. “Bailey Lauerman really values their employees and cares about their well-being which is so important, especially in a quick-paced industry where you could be working a lot of hours a week. The office atmosphere is pretty collaborative in general so we were always seeing each other and getting to know each other really well,” she said.

Each student intern was assigned a mentor. Moira Delaney,&nbsp;Associate Social Media Director, was Waugh’s.

“They were always there to offer advice, help and guide us. Moira was great to learn from and really helpful. She was willing to answer any of my questions,” Waugh said. “During the first week of the internship, the BL full-time staff did little, special, fun things to welcome everyone back because they had been remote. They wanted to make sure everyone felt welcome.”

Waugh said the internship was a valuable experience that supplemented her classroom work and vice versa.

“I’ve been able to apply what I learned in my classes and through working on The Big Event. Also, everything I learned in a real-life scenario is going to benefit me this fall when I start to dig into my digital marketing classes with my MBA,” Waugh said.

U.S. Census data shows Sarpy County grew at the fastest rate in the state, 20%, between 2010 and 2020. 

The county had a population of 190,604 as of last year. 

Douglas County gained the most residents overall, with a net increase of 67,416. 

The 13% increase brings the county’s total population to 584,526.

 Lancaster County also grew by 13%, from 285,407 in 2010 to 322,608 last year. 

Meanwhile, McPherson County in west-central Nebraska became the state’s least populated county, with 399 residents in 2020.

In the western part of Dobby’s Frontier Town, by the steps going into the church, is a curious small metal structure. This is a cistern pump.

Cisterns are underground waterproof storage tanks and were common prior to indoor plumbing. Cisterns were used to hold the collection of soft water, usually rain water that was fed from the building’s downspout. Some families used rain barrels, but cisterns held more water.

In our area the water pumped from underground wells can be hard, containing minerals. The soft rain water was used to wash clothes, rinse dishes, or wash hair.

The cistern pump at Dobby’s was one style used to bring water up from the underground tank. A group of cups are attached to a chain, and they bring the water up to be spilled into a funnel, which then comes out the spout on the front to pour into pitchers. A group of cups on a chain are in this cistern, and another chain of cups hangs on the church wall.

Notice that the cistern pump has a removable lid. It is important to keep cisterns covered so the water doesn’t fill with debris or provide a place for mosquitoes to hatch. Visitors are welcome to remove the lid and turn the handle to see how the cups move water. However, we don’t recommend you drink it! And please make sure the lid is replaced when you are done.

Cisterns are still common in many parts of the world. In the United States cisterns are often used by greenhouses to meet their water needs.

<a></a>Lincoln - As Memorial Stadium prepares to welcome 90,000 Garth Brooks Fans on Saturday, August 14, officials are alerting concertgoers to expect delays due to an additional 25,000 vehicles traveling to and from the stadium. Fans and drivers should be prepared for traffic slowdowns both before and after the event.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) wants drivers to be aware that construction activities are occurring on routes traditionally used by drivers on their way to the stadium. NDOT, in partnership with the Nebraska State Patrol, University of Nebraska, and the City of Lincoln, are recommending the following routes to fans:

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s biggest health care systems will require all their employees to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

 The companies issued a joint statement Thursday announcing the move as virus cases continue to surge in the state. 

The announcement included CHI Health, Nebraska Medicine, Methodist Health System, Bryan Health, Children’s Hospital and several other large health care employers.

 The move from these large employers may provide a boost to the state’s vaccination campaign. 

State health officials said Wednesday that 50.7% of all Nebraskans have been fully vaccinated, but the pace of vaccinations has slowed since the spring.

North Platte Police Department has learned that the victim, Geoffery Allen, 23, has died from his injuries.

Logan
Divine, 20, has now been charged with 1st-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

to the family of Mr. Allen.  We ask that the privacy of the family be

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man has been arrested and another is fighting for his life after an alleged assault on Wednesday afternoon.

North Platte police said at around 2:56 p.m., officers responded to the report of an unconscious male in the 200 block of S. Cottonwood St.

Police said officers arrived and found a male, 23, unconscious and not breathing with bystanders performing CPR.

North Platte Fire and Rescue responded and, along with law enforcement, continued life-saving efforts. The victim was transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte before being flown to a Denver hospital with injuries police said are life-threatening.

Police said officers began investigating and learned the victim had been assaulted by Logan Divine, 20.

Police said witnesses stated that Divine assaulted the victim by hitting him, kicking him, and striking him with a baseball bat multiple times.

Witnesses told police Divine then took the victim to a different location, before returning him to the Cottonwood St. address.

Police said, after further investigation, probable cause was established to arrest Divine on suspicion of use of a weapon to commit a felony and 1st-degree assault, both felonies.

Divine was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing and the victim's current condition is unknown.

Hermosa, SD&nbsp; — Custer County Fair Grounds, Hermosa, SD: The Custer County Fair is coming to town August 12-15.

 This year you can look forward to, fair food, lots of vendors, activities that anyone in the family will enjoy, live music, and the return of the Black Hills Paintball.

Each year the Custer County Fair is dedicated to an individual or couple and this year, the 2021 Custer County Fair is being dedicated to Marge McColley. 

As the festivities are set to begin Thursday with a free Kick-Off BBQ feed open to the public and Barnyard Olympics that the kids can participate in to help give a feel for what the rest of the weekend has in store. 

The fun continues into Friday with the horse judging and sheep shows starting right away in the morning. Black Hills Paintball will be set up and available throughout the afternoon into evening starting Friday as well. Friday night holds a BBQ Dinner, the Kids Calf Scramble and Ranch Rodeo. LIVE music kicks off on Friday night following the Ranch Rodeo where you can dance in the dirt to Midnight Sun. 

Saturday continues the festivities with the Ranch Sort Competition, more livestock shows, a cornhole tournament, and a kid’s carnival. Be sure to come taste test the BBQ competition during public tasting which starts at 4:30!  </figure> This year you can look forward to, fair food, lots of vendors, activities that anyone in the family will enjoy, live music, and the return of the Black Hills Paintball.Each year the Custer County Fair is dedicated to an individual or couple and this year, the 2021 Custer County Fair is being dedicated to Marge McColley. As the festivities are set to begin Thursday with a free Kick-Off BBQ feed open to the public and Barnyard Olympics that the kids can participate in to help give a feel for what the rest of the weekend has in store. The fun continues into Friday with the horse judging and sheep shows starting right away in the morning. Black Hills Paintball will be set up and available throughout the afternoon into evening starting Friday as well. Friday night holds a BBQ Dinner, the Kids Calf Scramble and Ranch Rodeo. LIVE music kicks off on Friday night following the Ranch Rodeo where you can dance in the dirt to Midnight Sun. Saturday continues the festivities with the Ranch Sort Competition, more livestock shows, a cornhole tournament, and a kid’s carnival. Be sure to come taste test the BBQ competition during public tasting which starts at 4:30! The night will wrap up with the NEW event presented by Eagle Chevrolet Ranch Bronc Riding and Battle for the Bed Couples Roping followed by more live music by Midnight Sun. The weekend will wrap up on Sunday starting with a free Pancake Breakfast followed by the parade. The second fair was held September 19-21, 1888. In addition to the crop exhibits it included shooting contests, horse races and a ball game. The fair was held in Buffalo Gap 1889- 1908 in the downtown area and the races were held on the streets. From 1909-1945 the fair was held in Fairburn and Pringle. In 1945 a group organized in Custer headed by County Agent, Mr. Simonson, planned and held the fair on August 27 &amp; 28. The County Commissioners allowed $300 for prizes. The fair was at the old football field. No buildings were erected, and the livestock were tied to the trees. In 1945 through the efforts of the Hermosa Roping Club the County Fair was returned to Hermosa where it has remained. Harold Hasselstrom was the first president elected after this move. The Custer County Fair appreciates and thanks all the volunteers who help make the annual event a success each and every year.
