Today, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, including&nbsp;35,000&nbsp;in&nbsp;Nebraska.&nbsp;Extreme heat precautions are important for everyone, but the need for a comprehensive safety plan is particularly important for people living with dementia. Taking measures to plan ahead for weather changes, like extreme heat, can prevent injuries and help a person with the disease feel more relaxed and less overwhelmed.&nbsp;

The extreme heat can be as dangerous as a wintertime blizzard for people with&nbsp;memory&nbsp;issues.&nbsp;

The Alzheimer’s Association Nebraska Chapter offers tips for families facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias to prepare for extreme heat conditions:&nbsp;

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Plan ahead.&nbsp;Family and friends should prepare accordingly and make plans to regularly check-in on a person living with dementia during extreme heat. Arrange alternative plans for cooler spaces, if air conditioning is unavailable, and dress in loose, light clothing.

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay hydrated.&nbsp;Increased water intake is essential to maintaining good hydration and health during extreme heat. Know the signs of heat exhaustion to avoid heat stroke. Dehydration may be difficult to notice in a person living with dementia, as signs like increased fatigue, dry mouth and headache may be difficult to detect.&nbsp;

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Pay attention at night.&nbsp;Keep people living with dementia cool by using fans and keeping the air conditioning on. At night, low temperatures can still exceed 75 degrees with little fluctuation in humidity levels, making for difficult and exacerbating sleeping conditions, heightened anxiety and increased agitation.&nbsp;

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay informed.&nbsp;Keep an eye on local weather forecasts. High temperatures are not the only cause for concern. Humidity and air pollution indices can cause breathing difficulties. The person should be monitored regularly and seek medical attention if symptoms of dehydration or heat exhaustion last for more than one hour.

The Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus will offer two classes for writers and artists in August. Both will be at the campus, 512 E. B St. South, in Ogallala.

Beginner Self-Publishing is scheduled for 3:30-5:30 p.m. Aug. 18. The class will be taught by Rose Mapel, owner of Rustic Milling and Craft, at Eustis, and author of a series of e-books.

Mapel will share simple steps for publishing both hard copies and digital versions of written works and will explain the associated costs of each. The class is designed to give participants the confidence to start or finish manuscripts and self-publish.

Mapel will also teach a second class at the campus from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 18.

Students will learn fundamentals such as simple designs, shading and perspective in Basic Beginner Drawing. All supplies will be provided.

Dr. Anpo Charging Thunder and Cassie Banks, DNP, FNP-C from Gordon Memorial Health Services’ joined the July 26 briefing to discuss the importance of COVID vaccines. Both providers affirmed their strong stance by getting COVID vaccinated themselves and for their children over the age of 12.

While many people have little to no symptoms after their COVID shot, Dr. Charging Thunder and Banks offered some suggestions to individuals returning for their second COVID shot to make the response more tolerable. In addition to drinking plenty of water and rest, the tips include:

Because of the way your body responds to the vaccine, the second dose will often cause more robust symptoms than the first.&nbsp; Keep in mind that the vaccine is “teaching” your body to recognize and defend itself against the coronavirus.&nbsp; Many people have reported low grade fever, chills, body aches, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, rash, headaches, fatigue and loss of appetite following the second dose.&nbsp; These symptoms last an average of 24-72 hours. In order to lessen these symptoms, we suggest the following over the counter medications for 2-3 days following your second vaccine dose:

Bird walk at Fort Robinson State Park set for Aug. 28

Columbus – Scam activity has seen a sharp increase over the weekend and into the start of the week, as scammers posing as Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) attempt to steal money from unsuspecting victims.

 Scammers will either text or call a customer and tell them that they must pay their bill immediately or their power will be shut-off. If the customer pays a scammer using a green dot card, or other method such as wire transfer or gift cards, it makes it very difficult to track or recover the money. 

“NPPD will not call a customer and threaten to shut off their power,” says NPPD General Manager of Retail Services Pat Hanrahan. “Scammers will try to confuse or cause panic in order to get what they want, and it’s important for customers to know this is not how NPPD conducts business. If a customer is having trouble paying their bills, we encourage them to reach out to us.” 

Scammers will sometimes spoof their real phone number to make it appear as an NPPD number when they are making calls. They will then ask the customer to call them back using a different number to make the payments. 

NPPD will not call or text a customer and demand payment or threaten to shut off a customer’s power. If you believe you are a target of a potential scam or are unsure if you are talking to someone from NPPD, hang up the phone and call 1-877-ASK-NPPD. If the customer pays a scammer using a green dot card, or other method such as wire transfer or gift cards, it makes it very difficult to track or recover the money. “NPPD will not call a customer and threaten to shut off their power,” says NPPD General Manager of Retail Services Pat Hanrahan. “Scammers will try to confuse or cause panic in order to get what they want, and it’s important for customers to know this is not how NPPD conducts business. If a customer is having trouble paying their bills, we encourage them to reach out to us.” Scammers will sometimes spoof their real phone number to make it appear as an NPPD number when they are making calls. They will then ask the customer to call them back using a different number to make the payments. NPPD will not call or text a customer and demand payment or threaten to shut off a customer’s power. At the State Fair, our farm and ranch families will be showcasing their livestock and produce.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to the USDA, Nebraska boasts the highest quality corn, soybean, and sorghum crops in the nation this year, with a greater percentage of those crops rated either “good” or “excellent” than in any other state.&nbsp; Meanwhile, the Beef State is breaking records for exports.&nbsp; The value of Nebraska beef exports in May 2021 (the most recent month of data available) exceeded $150 million, the most ever in a single month.&nbsp; Nebraska beef exports from January through May of 2021 are the highest they’ve ever been over the first five months of a year.&nbsp; Great performance from Nebraska agriculture is great news for our state, since one in four jobs in Nebraska is in agriculture. &nbsp;

State Sen. Joni Albrecht said 47 school boards across the state have either adopted resolutions or sent letters opposing the first draft of the standards that the Nebraska Department of Education is considering.

 Under the proposed standards, elementary students would learn about different kinds of family structures, including same-gender families, and gender identity.

47 Nebraska school districts object to sex ed standards

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man has been charged in the death of a 72-year-old man in Chadron.

 Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug says 20-year-old Ian Little Moon, also known as Sage Little Moon, is charged with first-degree murder and felony use of a deadly weapon in the death of John Martinez.

So far this summer, Wyoming hasn’t had significant fuel shortages or major wildfires. 

Gov. Mark Gordon’s office describes Tuesday’s executive order as a preemptive measure due to high fuel demand amid record tourism and firefighting efforts elsewhere. 

The Casper Star-Tribune reports other Western governors including South Dakota’s Kristi Noem have signed similar orders. 

Government rules usually limit truck drivers’ road hours to prevent fatigue-related accidents. 

The Wyoming order still prohibits truck drivers from driving when tired.

Council had a public hearing for Blomenkamp Investments LLC for the Runza Restaurant project. They also awarded the tennis court rehabilitation bid and SkyView Golf Course storm damage bid and more.&nbsp;

Dakotas health system makes COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory

LINCOLN –&nbsp;Governor Pete Ricketts issued a disaster declaration in response to the severe windstorms that struck Nebraska on July 9-10, 2021, knocking out electricity and causing extensive damages.&nbsp;

The declaration allows for use of the Governor’s Emergency Fund in response to damage that occurred as a result of storms and high winds that downed power lines and trees and created power outages. &nbsp;The state declaration is needed to request a federal disaster declaration for public assistance.

The State of Nebraska and local agencies continue to conduct damage assessments.&nbsp; Once sufficient information is gathered, a request for Federal Public Assistance will be sent to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regional office, then to FEMA headquarters, and finally to the White House for review and approval.

UPDATE: APD seeks help in locating missing child

CHADRON&nbsp; — Law enforcement authorities have located a person sought for questioning in connection with a homicide that occurred overnight in Chadron.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Chadron Police Department issued a media advisory Friday morning seeking the public’s help in locating Ian Littlemoon, also known as Sage Littlemoon. 

Littlemoon, 20, of Chadron, was believed to be traveling in a stolen van. Friday morning, the van was found abandoned northeast of Chadron.

Littlemoon has since been located in Pine Ridge and taken into custody by officers with the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.

The Chadron Police Department is the lead agency in the homicide investigation.

Chadron homicide suspect found, investigation continues 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — State health officials have reported Nebraska's first human case this year of West Nile virus. 

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services reported Friday that a county health department officials in northeastern Nebraska reported a person there had tested positive for the mosquito-borne illness. 

The Elkhorn-Logan Valley Health Department, which covers Burt, Cuming, Madison and Stanton counties, says the infected person was not hospitalized. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most people with West Nile virus don’t have symptoms.

 But it can cause flu-like symptoms and sometimes leads to severe illness, including brain inflammation, and death.

Officials report Nebraska's first West Nile case for 2021

On July 22 at approximately 10:40 p.m., Scottsbluff Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Avenue B and Rugger Drive for a rollover vehicle accident.&nbsp;

 20 year-old Tucker Straub of Scottsbluff was driving a maroon Ford F-150 at a high speed on Avenue B.&nbsp; 

"The pickup attempted to slow to turn onto Rugger Drive, but was unable to slow enough to do so," Scottsbluff Police Captain Lance Kite said. "The pickup then collided with the Regional West Medical Center sign, which caused damage to the sign, pickup and landscaping. The collision caused the pickup to come to rest on its passenger’s side."&nbsp; &nbsp;

Straub was arrested for driving under the influence, minor in possession of alcohol and reckless driving.&nbsp; 

Straub was transported to the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center. 

The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff Fire Department and Valley Ambulance assisted with this accident.&nbsp;

The Box Butte County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about contractor spoofing.&nbsp;

"First of all they're using the spoof numbers that shows up a local number when they call," Box Butte County Sheriff Tammy Mowry said. "Then a couple people have actually had them come to their house. They're very vague on the information that they give about their roofing company."

Mowry said residents should be wary about who is coming to their residence.

"Be very wary about giving them any kind of information or doing any kind of business," Mowry said. "It's not like the city and they have to come get their peddlers license. They need to be very cautious about these folks coming to their house. I guess the one's that do show up at their house, just ask them to leave politely. If they're not a company that they don't recognize or know, don't do business with them. And if they think they're going to get it for cheaper, they're not."

Mowry said she has received three calls about situations like this happening. She said sometimes these people will get on residents' roofs without talking to them.&nbsp;

"They're here just taking advantage," Mowery said. "I had one lady tell me, it's like ants coming out of an ant hole."
