Partial 10th Street closure in Alliance 

LINCOLN&nbsp; —&nbsp;Nebraska State Troopers have completed their deployment to Texas after partnering with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) for multiple weeks. The troopers have all completed their final shift of work and are in the process of returning to Nebraska.

“Our troopers performed with great professionalism in tough circumstances in the Del Rio area,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP). “Beyond routine criminal law enforcement, they rescued people from the water, rescued migrants from human smugglers, and located dozens of migrant children, some of whom had been without food or water for days. I’m proud of their extraordinary work during this effort. It was especially heartening to see the tremendous support offered to our troopers by the Del Rio community.”

Nebraska State Troopers actively assisted Texas DPS Troopers, Customs and Border Protection Agents, and Texas Rangers for a total of 24 days, working both day and night shifts. During that time, Nebraska troopers assisted other agencies in performing more than 500 traffic stops and 25 commercial vehicle inspections, which resulted in arrests of several people for possession of narcotics, possession of weapons, and possession of stolen vehicles.

Troopers also assisted in the arrest of more than 15 people for human smuggling, located at least six known gang or cartel members, and assisted in multiple arrests for sexual assault of a minor and child exploitation. During the course of enforcing Texas criminal law, troopers assisted as Texas DPS referred more than 1,600 migrants to Customs and Border Protection. The vast majority of those referrals were of migrants who approached the troopers asking for help.

“We were grateful to have the assistance of the Nebraska State Patrol over the last few weeks,” said&nbsp;South Texas DPS Regional Director Victor Escalon. “Not only did our troopers appreciate their assistance and professionalism, but the communities we serve have also shown phenomenal support for our out-of-state law enforcement partners. As the emergency situation continues, we’d like to thank Nebraska and the several other states that have stepped-up to assist our mission to keep our communities safe.”

The deployment was in response to a request made by Texas officials through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which is a partnership of state emergency management agencies. Nebraska is one of several states that has responded to the EMAC request by sending troopers to assist Texas law enforcement agencies.

The initial deployment included 25 troopers for two weeks but was extended at the request of Texas officials to maintain 15 troopers in the Del Rio area for another two weeks. All of the troopers who took part in this mission were volunteers.

“We had some younger troopers that were down there, even the seasoned ones, are taking experiences back from this that they’re going to carry for the rest of their career,” said Captain Jason Scott, Commander of the NSP Special Operations Division. “I have no doubt that when they come back and look at I-80 they may look at it differently than they did when they went to Del Rio. In essence, our people got about a lifetime’s worth of criminal activity and smuggling investigations in 24 days.”

During the deployment, troopers received numerous letters and other demonstrations of support from members of the Del Rio community.

&nbsp;Nebraska Tourism is excited to announce over 100 people completed the 2021 Nebraska Passport so far. As of Wednesday, July 21, 106 people have completed the program. The Passport inspires Nebraskans and tourists to travel throughout the state collecting stamps to earn prizes, while also supporting Nebraska’s tourism destinations and small businesses. This year’s program runs from May 1 to September 30. “Not only is the Passport a fun program to participate in, it also provides a huge economic impact to the state,” said John Ricks, Nebraska Tourism executive director. “In 2019, the program generated $23.7 million in traveler spending and $1.9 million in local and state tax revenue, and the program has only continued to grow since then.” Doug and Leah Hubbard have participated in the Nebraska Passport Program for the last seven years, four of them as Passport Champions. “The program has something to meet everybody's tastes and interests. We eagerly anticipate each passport year for the chance to visit old favorites and experience new places alike. Over 100 travelers participate in Nebraska Passport at halfway point

Photographers became important in America after the Civil War. Because of war photography we recognized the importance of photographs in sharing information and recording history. After the war, Americans moved west, but pioneer families could never afford the expense or the time required to have an artist paint their portraits. However, they could pose for a local photographer. Josiephine’s Photo Parlor serves that function at Dobby’s Frontier Town.

Photography was first developed in the 1820’s, but at least eight hours or even several days of exposure in the camera were required and the earliest results were very crude.

In 1839, both the metal-based daguerreotype process and the paper-based calotype negative and salt print processes were developed that required only minutes of exposure in the camera, and produced clear, finely detailed results. In 1884 George Eastman developed the Kodak camera which used film. However, glass plates were far superior to film because they were stable and less likely to bend or distort images. All of these advances made photography much more accessible, and many communities then had a photography studio.

The photographer recorded photos of families in their nicest clothes. Special occasions like weddings were frequent subjects. Today 12th Street between Niobrara Avenue and Sweetwater Avenue will be closed so crews can paint the crosswalks.&nbsp;The roadway is expected to re-open by Friday afternoon.

This is an Activate Alliance project.&nbsp;

The first crosswalk was finished on July 21 at 14th and Sweetwater Avenue. It was created by Carnegie Arts Center, Keep Alliance Beautiful and Panhandle Public Health District.&nbsp;

"It was a hot one, but we got it done," Carnegie Arts Center Director Kyren Gibson said. "We'll be working on 12th Street on the bike path crosswalk...and 10th on Friday at the crosswalk between the park and fountain. Street closures continue in Alliance for crosswalk paintings

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific’s second-quarter profit jumped 59% as the railroad hauled 22% more cargo than a year ago when shipments fell to the lowest levels of the coronavirus pandemic. 

The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad said Thursday that it earned $1.8 billion, or $2.72 per share during the quarter. 

That’s up from $1.13 billion, or $1.67 per share, a year ago. 

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. 

The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.55 per share. 

Union Pacific CEO Lance Fritz said the railroad delivered strong results despite the ongoing congestion issues in West Coast ports and at the key rail hub of Chicago.

GERING - On Saturday, August 7, Scotts Bluff National Monument will host an evening program for “Campfire Day”.

Park Rangers will give short talks about storytelling in indigenous traditions, fur trading, and on the Oregon Trail and have an opportunity to learn about campfire safety. 

The youngest participants in the program will also have an opportunity to earn a Junior Ranger badge. 

The program will take place in the amphitheater behind the Scotts Bluff National Monument visitor center starting at 7 p.m. The program is free and will last approximately one hour. 

All ages are welcome to participate in this fun and educational program.

The Scotts Bluff National Monument visitor center summer hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The Summit Road is open from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. daily, weather permitting. LINCOLN, Neb. - Student-loan forgiveness has become an increasingly popular scam targeting young adults, and as an October deadline looms, consumer advocates are warning people to watch their wallets. Tami Barrett, Lincoln and greater Nebraska branch manager with the Better Business Bureau, said she expects to see an uptick in fraudulent activity this fall as the current COVID-19 pause in federal student loan payments draws to a close on October 1. "A lot of people think it's just older people," said Barrett. "But actually the (Federal Trade Commission) and the Better Business Bureau reveal that 44% of people who actually get scammed are between the ages of 20 and 29 years old." By comparison, just 20% of people between 70 and 79 have lost money to fraud. People with student loan debt present a giant target for scammers. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 43 million student-loan borrowers in the U.S. owe a total of $1.6 trillion in student loans. The average U.S. household with student loans owes more than $57,000, with women and people of color holding the most debt. Barrett said scammers are likely to offer loan holders free extended forbearance and fake "President Biden loan-forgiveness plans." She said the object of the scams is to steal young adults' money or their identities. Still, Barrett said there are ways to avoid falling prey to scammers. "Never agree to upfront fees," said Barrett. "It is in fact illegal to charge an upfront fee for the service of lowering federal student-loan payments or reducing student-loan debt." President Joe Biden campaigned on canceling student debt, and earlier this month the U.S. Department of Education canceled nearly $56 million in student-loan debt, mostly connected to institutions engaging in misconduct, such as promising jobs or falsely claiming credits would transfer to universities. Scammers targeting Nebraska student loan holders

GERING -&nbsp; On Tuesday, July 27, Scotts Bluff National Monument will host an evening backcountry tour. Park Ranger Matt Salomon will lead the tour on the north side of the bluff.

Participants will drive along the canal road seeing the beautiful north side of the bluff, make a tour of a prairie dog town, and finish with a short hike into the Badlands formation. 

Visitors interested in going on the tour should bring water and comfortable shoes for small hikes. 

The tour will begin at the Visitor Center at 6:45 pm and will finish at about 8:00 pm. Visitors will need either a pickup or SUV to travel the canal road through the north side of the property.

 The backcountry tour is limited to 50 people.

Scotts Bluff National Monument to host 'evening backcountry tour'

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced that, for the first time, hay harvesting permit applications for the public will be accepted through an online application portal beginning July 30 at 7:00 a.m. CDT.

An individual may purchase hay harvesting permits online from July 30 through September 15 on a first-come, first-served basis, with each permit limited to five miles of roadside hay, one or both sides. The hay is for private use only and only one permit is allowed per family. With the new online option, an integrated online map will be utilized for customers and staff to select miles to mow, and will instantly be updated, showing the miles that are available for sale.

This effort by NDOT to move as much of the hay harvesting permit process online as possible involves a two-year phased implementation. This year, landowners were given the choice to renew last year’s permit by mail. Meanwhile, the application has been moved online for public sale, reducing the need for people to come into the office and increasing efficiency.

“We are excited to offer this online option for purchasing hay harvesting permits,” said Tom Sands, NDOT Operations Manager. “This will streamline the process and provide greater convenience for Nebraskans who will be able to apply for hay permits from their homes, without waiting in long lines. Storing all the information in a centralized database will also allow for better record keeping for future renewals and electronic notification.”

During the July 20 Alliance City Council meeting, council issued a proclamation in recognition of two Alliance lifeguards that saved the life of a swimmer at Big Blue Bay.&nbsp;

Drew Varner and Brock Brass saved a child that was drowning on June 23.&nbsp;

The Alliance City Council proclaimed July 21 "Drew Varner and Brock Brass Day".

"The next item is a very special item," Alliance Mayor Mike Dafney said. "It's something that will be a first in the several years that I've been here to do something like this. It's really an honor to be able to do this."&nbsp;&nbsp;

WHEREAS, On the afternoon of June 23, 2021 two City of Alliance lifeguards acted quickly and bravely to save the life of a young swimmer at the Big Blue Bay; and

WHEREBY, On that day, Drew Varner and Brock Brass were working at their lifeguard posts adjacent to the diving board and deep end of the pool when Drew noticed that a swimmer seemed to be in distress; Drew descended from the lifeguard chair and dove into the water to rescue the swimmer; and

WHEREBY, Brock witnessed Drew rescuing the child and immediately went to the pool side to assist, pulling the swimmer from the pool; Brock then completed a preliminary assessment, rolling the victim to his side to allow the water out of his airway - resulting in the child coughing to clear the airway; Meanwhile, other staff members called 911 to request ambulance service; and

WHEREAS, The swimmer was breathing when Emergency Medical Technicians arrived, who then assessed the boy and transferred the youth to the hospital for further observation; and

WHEREAS, These two lifeguards successfully performed their lifesaving responsibilities as a result of many hours of training and vigilance, which resulted in a positive outcome for the swimmer and his family; and

WHEREAS, These young men epitomize many of the values to which the City of Alliance and its citizens strive, namely: dedication, responsibility, bravery, sacrifice and service.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Dafney, Mayor of the City of Alliance, on behalf of the Alliance City Council and citizens of Alliance, do hereby express our gratitude for, and recognition of, the lifesaving skills and swift and appropriate action of Drew Varner and Brock Brass, and do hereby proclaim Wednesday, July 21, 2021 as: "Drew Varner and Brock Brass Day".

The Alliance Police and Fire Chief spoke to express their gratitude to Varner and Brass as well.&nbsp; "We just want to give you guys...from the police department perspective...it's a dedication to the community and what you did, so we have an outstanding service award on behalf of the police department," Alliance Police Chief Philip Lukens said.&nbsp; "Not really sure what you guys are planning after you're done being the lifeguard, but the fire department could use men like you," Alliance Fire Chief Troy Shoemaker said. "We appreciate what you did. It's always been a pleasure to work with the pool staff." In other business, council: - Recognized the promotions of Cody Buskirk to Alliance Police Lieutenant and Sam Mullins to Street Foreman -Approved on first reading an ordinance that will prohibit motorized and non-motorized recreation vehicles such as skateboards, bicycles and skates on designated areas of the municipal parks. There was a recent incident at the Alliance Sunken Gardens.&nbsp; -Held a public hearing on Blomenkamp Investments LLC. They will be building the new Runza Restaurant in Alliance.&nbsp; -Approved the 2021-2022 liability and property insurance renewal with Gregory's Insurance.&nbsp; -Approved a bid award to Peltz Companies for the tennis court rehabilitation project. The bid included a base bid in the amount of $219,600. There is also an alternate bid for an additional $79,000, which provides the tennis court surfacing.&nbsp; -Approved a bid award to K.L. Wood and Co. for the SkyView Golf Course storm damage repairs. The bid was in the amount of $107,752.15.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We have all probably been contacted in online or telephone scams, and we may have friends who have lost thousands of dollars after falling for a scam. One of the easiest ways to tell if you are being targeted is to think about how you are being asked to transfer your funds.

How does the scammer want that money sent? It has to be a way that allows them to collect right away without you backing out. It also has to be hard to trace. Remember that your funds can be instantly transferred electronically around the world. There are five different methods commonly used by scammers to make those funds transfers.

Gift cards are currently the preferred method used for all types of scams. You are instructed to buy one or several cards worth hundreds of dollars from a major retailer like Amazon or Walmart. You then read the code numbers on the back of the cards to the caller. Once you've done that, the swindler can use the codes to buy merchandise — including other gift cards with lower denominations. That makes the payment untraceable.

Similar to a gift card, scammers also ask for prepaid debit cards. A prepaid debit card is a reloadable debit card like Visa which is sold at major retail stores. It has a serial number that is used to transfer funds from your bank account to the card and is used like a traditional checking account debit card. The consumer can designate how much money to load onto the card at any given time. Money on the card can be transferred to another debit card or used to make same-day payments to other companies. If the serial number falls into the hands of a scammer, the scammer can drain the money you have loaded onto the card.

In the past the most common method used by a scammer has been the wire transfer. Your bank, Western Union, or MoneyGram sends funds to another account number for a fee. The transfer can’t be cancelled once it is sent. The one exception is if you make an international transfer and then contact the company to cancel it within a half-hour, and that only works if the wire hasn’t been picked up or deposited yet.

Money transfer apps like Venmo, Cash, or Zelle are commonly used by most young people today. You can move funds easily to another person who has an account. The apps are designed to be used by people who know and trust each other, and there is no consumer protection if you send money via one of them to a person who asks you to share your account number. Because you authorize these payments, you will probably not be able to get your money back.

Most of us don’t have cryptocurrency accounts like Bitcoin, but they are becoming more common. Victims are instructed on how to open an account and told to buy a fraction of a Bitcoin, for example, in increments of as little as $10. Transactions take a few minutes

and are person-to-person, without any bank or regulating body. When the crook gets your money, it's gone. More cryptocurrencies are being developed all the time.

Last week’s column was about the Grandparent Scam where you receive a call or message from a “grandchild;” a catastrophe has happened, and they need money fast. There are several other scams we need to watch for and next week’s column will explain how more of them work.

Billions of dollars are lost to scammers every year. If you think you are a victim of a scam, contact the company that sent the money and see if they will reverse the payment. (They probably won’t, but it doesn’t hurt to try.) Let the police department know, as scammers usually target an area for a while and then move on. Finally, contact the Federal Trade Commission. When you report a scam, the FTC can use the information to build cases against scammers, spot trends, educate the public, and share data about what is happening in your community. If you were scammed, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

United Way to host free movie night at Sandhills Drive-In

The Spirit of the Plains exhibit at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center was completed and unveiled to the public earlier this month with the addition of a coyote, a rabbit and several yucca plants. The final installations join Kola, a 7’4” buffalo.

All of the pieces in the exhibit are made entirely from cardboard, burlap and paper mache and were donated to the Sandoz Center by local artist Linda Dabbs.

Located on a traditionally empty platform above the lower level that houses the C.F. Coffee Gallery, the new exhibit fills a void in the Sandoz Center. Structurally, the platform that serves as a ceiling to the Coffee Gallery is not designed to hold much weight, presenting a challenge for any exhibit that could be located on it. Dabbs, a local artist and an adjunct professor at Chadron State College, envisioned the buffalo made of nothing more than cardboard to keep it lightweight.

Weighing in at 50-75 pounds, the buffalo, named Kola, which is Lakota for “friend,” was lifted over the railing in the Chicoine Atrium and lowered on to the platform to greet visitors in April. He was joined by yucca plants, but the remainder of the space awaited the final pieces from Dabbs.

Dabbs used cardboard donated by Ace Hardware, three-and-a-half bolts of burlap and a “massive” number of hours to complete the entire exhibit, on which she began working in December 2020. The empty platform presented a challenge due to the weight restrictions, but Dabbs was undaunted.

“I said ‘I will figure out a way,’” she said, adding one of her favorite slogans, “Art solves.”

Dabbs used her background in set design at the Henry Doorly Zoo and in commercial and theater art to create the “Spirit of the Plains” exhibit for the space that had been vacant since 2003. In addition to the donation of cardboard from Ace Hardware, Dabbs said the project would not have been possible without the help of Loriann Linder and Ema Ackerman and the patience of Sandoz Center staff members Holly Counts and Laure Sinn.

After the coyote, rabbit and other brush was installed, the group also added several fossil-threaded rocks to the exhibit to provide a finishing touch. The rocks, given to Counts’ family by Sterling Bets, are the heaviest items in the entire exhibit.

“He would be thrilled to have them in here,” Counts said. “I love (the exhibit). It’s such a great addition. It’s very much what this building is about.”

The Omaha World-Herald reports that nonprofit United College Athlete Advocates' petition had gathered more than 1,300 signatures by Monday morning. 

Former Nebraska golfer Daniel Pearson is a cofounder of United College Athlete Advocates, and Husker track and field athlete Sadio Fenner, a UCAA representative at Nebraska, helped lead the charge on the petition. 

Critical race theory is a way of thinking about America’s history through the lens of racism.

Some Nebraska athletes oppose critical race theory proposal

Omaha – Nineteen Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska members earned the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, the prestigious Gold Award. Gold Award Girl Scouts are high school activists who change the world through extraordinary leadership and passion by tackling local, national or global issues.

This year’s Spirit of Nebraska Gold Award Girl Scouts made meaningful, lasting change in childhood literacy, declining bee populations, suicide awareness, vaping risks and more.

“We are so proud to have 19 Girl Scouts earn their Gold Awards this year,” said Fran Marshall, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska.&nbsp;“Even during a pandemic, Gold Award Girl Scouts step up, select an issue that is important to them, and work diligently to overcome obstacles and accomplish a sustainable and impactful project in their communities.”

According to a study by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.girlscouts.org/content/dam/girlscouts-gsusa/forms-and-documents/about-girl-scouts/research/GSUSA_GSRI_2021_The-Girl-Scout-Alum-Difference.pdf" target="_blank">Girl Scout Research Institute in 2021</a>, 98% of Gold Award Girl Scouts said Girl Scouting had a positive impact on their lives. They attribute their commitment to community, development of essential life skills and success in life to Girl Scouts. Gold Award Girl Scouts are also more likely to have a positive self-image, hold positive values, and exhibit confidence and courage compared to non-alums.

At a young age, Girl Scouts develop leadership skills by identifying community issues, making improvements and earning the highest awards for their age groups. ­

In Nebraska, 195 girls earned their Bronze Award, the highest award for Girl Scouts in fourth and fifth grade. An additional 89 girls earned their Silver Award, the highest Girl Scout award for sixth- through eighth-graders.

2021 Gold Award Project Descriptions

After noticing that children were often using their parents’ phones during church, Baker decided to focus her project on youth literacy. To encourage families to read more together, Baker made a Little Free Library for her community and an updated library for her church’s youth. She also held a book drive and collected more than 800 books for the libraries.

Upon discovering that many Lancaster Rehabilitation Center residents had few visitors, Benson created the Generations Connect program that encourages high school volunteers to visit and participate in fun activities with residents. She recruited 13 high school friends who were paired with residents. Visits boosted residents’ morale and improved the volunteers’ communication skills. During COVID-19, the volunteers wrote letters to their residents and held regular video call sessions.

During biology class, Bitterman learned about the drastic decline in global bee populations. Partnering with Lauritzen Gardens and the Nebraska State Arboretum, she designed and built a native bee pollinator garden at Lauritzen Gardens to sustainably address bee habitat loss. Bitterman created a brochure with facts and actionable tasks for visitors and a Girl Scout “Save the Bees” program that teaches girls how to act on this issue.

Blumanthal’s life was changed when she learned her uncle had taken his own life. After learning that one in four people will be affected by mental or neurological disorders and that discrimination and lack of information keep people from getting treatment, Blumanthal was inspired to take action. She organized a mental health conference, developed a self-care kit for Girl Scouts and designed a booklet identifying mental health resources in the Nebraska panhandle, thanks to a grant from Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska.

Elizabeth Caldwell of Glenwood, Iowa

Caldwell tackled scientific research and created a way to provide fresh produce for people in need. She developed a way to maximize space for plant and animal growth using AquaBioPonics so local shelters and food banks can grow the produce they need with minimal resources. Caldwell also mentored other young women on how to gain the research experience needed to pursue medical careers.

When Claus’ great-grandmother moved to a nursing home, she was no longer able to continue gardening. Claus built three flower garden boxes for the nursing home in Mapleton, Iowa, giving the residents horticulture opportunities. She also made game tables for avid card players, providing something fun for residents to do with each other and visiting families.

After noticing Omaha-area theaters didn’t offer technical internships for high school students, Correll worked with The Rose Theater to start annual internships that provide backstage experience in a professional theater environment. High school juniors and seniors will get hands-on training in theater production components such as costume design, set design and construction, props, and lighting and sound.

Craft’s small church of 70 members had an urgent need to attract younger members. To mentor and inspire younger children, Craft began teaching Wednesday night church classes with her advisor. She also raised $6,000 to fund repairs. Freshly painted walls, updated playground equipment and trimmed trees brought new life to the church and instilled pride among the congregation. She also made a stained-glass art piece honoring the church’s 150th&nbsp;anniversary.

Cummings used bocce ball to support Chadron Special Olympics athletes and connect her community with the organization. She scouted locations, created a proposal and built two bocce ball courts outside the Office of Human Development. The courts are open to Special Olympics athletes and the public. Cummings also is working with her high school physical education teacher to introduce bocce ball to students and build connections between the school and Special Olympic athletes.

Omaha – Nineteen Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska members earned the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, the prestigious Gold Award. Gold Award Girl Scouts are high school activists who change the world through extraordinary leadership and passion by tackling local, national or global issues.This year’s Spirit of Nebraska Gold Award Girl Scouts made meaningful, lasting change in childhood literacy, declining bee populations, suicide awareness, vaping risks and more.“We are so proud to have 19 Girl Scouts earn their Gold Awards this year,” said Fran Marshall, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska.&nbsp;“Even during a pandemic, Gold Award Girl Scouts step up, select an issue that is important to them, and work diligently to overcome obstacles and accomplish a sustainable and impactful project in their communities.”<figure>

 </figure>Using strategic thinking, collaboration, problem solving and time management, Gold Award Girl Scouts address pressing issues and become the future leaders the world needs.&nbsp;According to a study by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.girlscouts.org/content/dam/girlscouts-gsusa/forms-and-documents/about-girl-scouts/research/GSUSA_GSRI_2021_The-Girl-Scout-Alum-Difference.pdf" target="_blank">Girl Scout Research Institute in 2021</a>, 98% of Gold Award Girl Scouts said Girl Scouting had a positive impact on their lives. They attribute their commitment to community, development of essential life skills and success in life to Girl Scouts. Gold Award Girl Scouts are also more likely to have a positive self-image, hold positive values, and exhibit confidence and courage compared to non-alums.At a young age, Girl Scouts develop leadership skills by identifying community issues, making improvements and earning the highest awards for their age groups. ­In Nebraska, 195 girls earned their Bronze Award, the highest award for Girl Scouts in fourth and fifth grade. An additional 89 girls earned their Silver Award, the highest Girl Scout award for sixth- through eighth-graders.2021 Gold Award Project DescriptionsHailey Baker of BlairAfter noticing that children were often using their parents’ phones during church, Baker decided to focus her project on youth literacy. To encourage families to read more together, Baker made a Little Free Library for her community and an updated library for her church’s youth. She also held a book drive and collected more than 800 books for the libraries.Elise Benson of LincolnUpon discovering that many Lancaster Rehabilitation Center residents had few visitors, Benson created the Generations Connect program that encourages high school volunteers to visit and participate in fun activities with residents. She recruited 13 high school friends who were paired with residents. Visits boosted residents’ morale and improved the volunteers’ communication skills. During COVID-19, the volunteers wrote letters to their residents and held regular video call sessions.Emma Bitterman of GretnaDuring biology class, Bitterman learned about the drastic decline in global bee populations. Partnering with Lauritzen Gardens and the Nebraska State Arboretum, she designed and built a native bee pollinator garden at Lauritzen Gardens to sustainably address bee habitat loss. Bitterman created a brochure with facts and actionable tasks for visitors and a Girl Scout “Save the Bees” program that teaches girls how to act on this issue.Chloe Blumanthal of AllianceBlumanthal’s life was changed when she learned her uncle had taken his own life. After learning that one in four people will be affected by mental or neurological disorders and that discrimination and lack of information keep people from getting treatment, Blumanthal was inspired to take action. She organized a mental health conference, developed a self-care kit for Girl Scouts and designed a booklet identifying mental health resources in the Nebraska panhandle, thanks to a grant from Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska.Elizabeth Caldwell of Glenwood, IowaCaldwell tackled scientific research and created a way to provide fresh produce for people in need. She developed a way to maximize space for plant and animal growth using AquaBioPonics so local shelters and food banks can grow the produce they need with minimal resources. Caldwell also mentored other young women on how to gain the research experience needed to pursue medical careers.Isabelle Claus of ElkhornWhen Claus’ great-grandmother moved to a nursing home, she was no longer able to continue gardening. Claus built three flower garden boxes for the nursing home in Mapleton, Iowa, giving the residents horticulture opportunities. She also made game tables for avid card players, providing something fun for residents to do with each other and visiting families.Sydney Correll of BellevueAfter noticing Omaha-area theaters didn’t offer technical internships for high school students, Correll worked with The Rose Theater to start annual internships that provide backstage experience in a professional theater environment. She recorded volunteers reading picture books and created audio books for the class, which serves children with moderate to severe disabilities. Students like her brother can now hear peer-read stories anytime. Henry also created storage shelves for the audio books and collected donated books for the classroom.Bernice Hilker of OmahaAlthough Picotte Elementary School provides babysitting services for PTO members who bring children to meetings, Hilker was disheartened by the lack of activities available for the students. After discovering broken crayons, dry markers and games with missing pieces, she made a learning cart full of educational activities and games, as well as instructions on childcare dos and don’ts for inexperienced teenage volunteers.Bailey Klanderud of BenningtonTo build stronger bonds between middle and high school students, Klanderud’s school started Life Groups comprised of 20 youth in grades sixth through 12. Klanderud realized some students had trouble leading their peers and set out to make the groups more successful. She created a curriculum for leading groups that includes ice breakers, games, conversation topics and prayers. It can also be used for after-school activities, team-building retreats and church groups.Zoe Kraus of CreteHabitat loss and climate change are two factors in the decreasing population of birds in Crete. With that knowledge, Kraus created a garden at the Crete Public Library using native plants to increase bird and insect populations, while beautifying the landscape. She also educated the community on the importance of native plants, which require less maintenance and attract more insects than other plants.Rebecca Liebsack of OmahaLiebsack wanted to educate children about the harmful effects of vaping. She created a fun patch program so Girl Scout Juniors and Cadettes can discover the dangers of vaping in an entertaining way. She included a word search, informational websites and activities that allow girls to learn with their troop and friends. The program includes hands-on activities that participants engaged and helps them retain information.Olivia Longmore of GeringLongmore wanted to increase awareness of and participation in foreign exchange opportunities for high school students in her area. To encourage students to get involved, Longmore provided handouts and detailed information about where to find exchange programs, how to apply and what traits make a successful exchange student applicant. She also created videos to engage the students. Teachers used her curriculum and videos, and several students told her they would consider applying.Kristen Rohrer of EdgarOver three years, Rohrer fundraised and worked with the Edgar City Council to install eight pieces of musical park equipment in Bell Tower Park. She wanted to enhance the park and engage visitors with music and sculptures. Combining the two created park equipment that allows visitors to play music and enjoy a full sensory experience. The perfectly tuned sound sculptures are multigenerational and handicap accessible.Laura Stehlik of Nebraska CityStehlik wanted girls to integrate healthy lifestyle choices into their regular activities. Inspired by changes during COVID-19, she created a virtual Brownie Day at Camp PowerPoint program. Girls who complete the program can incorporate food balance into their lives, learn to cook with math conversions, become self-aware, sing, do fun activities and connect with other Girl Scouts via Zoom. The program can also be used by Girl Scout leaders for in-person camp outings.Brynnleigh Weaver of PapillionWeaver’s project addressed the fact that girls in fifth to seventh grades tend to stray from Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. To get more children interested in learning STEM concepts, Weaver developed interactive, hands-on kits. Students can discover new ideas through playing, without feeling like they are being forced to learn. The kits motivate youth to learn STEM theories and reach educational outcomes while having fun.&nbsp;Rebecca Wulf of HooperConcerned about lagging agriculture literacy, Wulf worked with the Logan View FFA Chapter to plan an ag education event at her school to teach students where their food comes from. She aligned her activities and lessons with state education standards so her event could be considered class instruction time. She introduced elementary students to dairy production, bee production, alternative crops, crops and livestock, popcorn, and farm safety.
