On December 22nd, 2020 Box Butte General Hospital (BBGH) received 600 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. As of today, all 600 doses have been administered to BBGH healthcare workers, first responders, healthcare workers outside of BBGH, and the 75+ years of age population that opted to receive it. 

It has now been approved for BBGH to begin administering the vaccine to the 65+ years of age population. 

While there are currently no vaccines available in the community, there is a waitlist that may be joined. Call the BBGH hotline voicemail, 308.761.3097 or visit pphd.org to join the vaccine waitlist.

What is important to know about the Moderna vaccine is that you may still get the COVID-19 virus for about two weeks after receiving the vaccination. It is vital to continue to practice social distancing, hand washing, and wearing a mask in public to continue to ensure the wellness of the community.

 A second dose of the vaccine will need to be received 28 days after the first dose. Symptoms of COVID-19 may arise but will subside within 1-7 days. 

The Moderna vaccine does not alter DNA or DNA of a cell, and it is a synthetic vaccine meaning it doesn’t give you the virus. There were no shortcuts taken in the development of this vaccine, it was developed using the RNA (ribonucleic acid- a molecule that carries messages from DNA to proteins) technology that has been used for the past 10 years.

As more vaccines become available to administer, those on the waitlist will be called. The timeline (which remains fluid) for the general population to receive the vaccine is between May and July of 2021.

Due to high sales, officials in the states participating in the Mega Millions® Lotto game have increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Tuesday, January 19 drawing to $865 million or $638.8 million with the cash option selected.

UPDATED Mega Millions®, Powerball® Jackpots simultaneously over $700 million for first time ever

CHADRON – Chadron State College is partnering with Nebraska Methodist College to offer a new program in which students can earn a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Health Sciences from Chadron State College and an Associate’s of Science degree in Respiratory Care from Nebraska Methodist College. The Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees approved the program in June 2020.&nbsp;

Dr. Wendy Waugh,&nbsp;Dean of the School of Business, Mathematics&nbsp;and Science,&nbsp;said one major advantage of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/sci/healthprofessions/respiratorycare/index.csc" target="_blank">the partnership</a>&nbsp;is that students will not need to leave Chadron to complete the degrees.&nbsp;Students can complete clinicals at Chadron Community Hospital, the Gordon Hospital, or Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance. If students would like to, they can blend rural clinicals with the Methodist Health System, as well as clinical sites in Omaha.&nbsp;

“Students will have the opportunity to gain specialized training in a health care field experiencing rapid growth. Students can begin now. In fact, we are hopeful that some of our current Health Sciences majors might choose to participate immediately,” Waugh said.

CSC students who declare a Health Sciences major will be advised by Dr. Ann Buchmann regarding the courses to complete the CSC degree program. The 3+1 partnership requires&nbsp;students&nbsp;to apply at Nebraska Methodist College Respiratory Program their sophomore year.&nbsp;

After three years of CSC courses, students will take a blend of CSC courses and NMC Respiratory Profession courses&nbsp;advised by Dr. Lisa Fuchs, NMC Program Director. Students&nbsp;may&nbsp;take&nbsp;online courses&nbsp;if&nbsp;they choose to stay at CSC and attend clinical in their own community. Once students earn an Associate of Science they are prepared to sit for the national respiratory exam and become a&nbsp;Registered Respiratory Therapist.

Fuchs, Waugh, and former CSC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Charles Snare collaborated for more than a year to develop the program. Fuchs said the demand for respiratory therapists results in students receiving job offers several months before they graduate.&nbsp;

“There are opportunities for advancement. Respiratory Therapists can be travelers like nurses. Some health care organizations are offering a $5,000 to $15,000 sign-on bonus, and you can choose where you want to go. It’s good to know there’s a path to move forward,” Fuchs said. “There will be a demand for respiratory therapists to study the after effects and long-term effects of COVID-19 in patients, as well as research.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Megan Schuckman, a Chadron physician who completed the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) at CSC, said respiratory therapists possess a special skill set that is in high demand.&nbsp;

“There is a shortage of respiratory therapists especially in rural areas. The pandemic has made it glaringly apparent that they are necessary in rural Nebraska. Respiratory Therapy is an integral arm of&nbsp;our health care team that often gets overlooked. They’ve always been important and never more so than now,” Schuckman said.&nbsp;

Schuckman said some COVID-19 survivors lose some lung function and respiratory therapists are the ideal professionals to help these patients.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Adam Wells, a 2006 CSC graduate and RHOP participant, is the Co-Medical Director of the NMC Respiratory Care Program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I think this new program is an exceptional opportunity for future students to pursue and it is a tremendous honor to be able to help give back to the area, community, and school that helped launch my career. CSC launches Respiratory Care Partnership with Nebraska Methodist College

COVID vaccine allocation to increase for the Panhandle beginning next week

1,100 doses, plus the required 2nd dose, are anticipated to arrive weekly beginning next week. Doses are allocated based on a percentage of the county population. The Panhandle Vaccine Task Force is working together to get shots in arms.

We are vaccinating health care providers and those 75 and older first. To date, 4,385 people in the eligible populations have received the COVID vaccine in the Panhandle.

A Cheyenne County female in her 50s and a Morrill County male in his 60s are the most recent COVID deaths being announced. This brings the total deaths to 158.

“We share peace and comfort with the friends and loved ones in the loss of our fellow Panhandle residents,” said Engel.

Unified Command confirms 62 more cases of COVID in the Panhandle since last reporting on Thursday, January 14. The investigations are underway, all close contacts will be quarantined.

SD Tourism businesses look forward with renewed hope for 2021

OVERTON, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol says a North Platte man has died in a rollover crash on Interstate 80 near the south-central village of Overton. 

The Omaha World-Herald reports the crash happened early Monday, around 2:30 a.m., killing 47-year-old Alfred Leon. 

The patrol says Leon was exiting I-80 near Overton when he lost control of his vehicle and rolled. 

Overton is about 25 miles west of Kearney.

Fall River Health Services to provide COVID-19 Vaccine Phase 1D Priority

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — Health officials in Wyoming have confirmed the state’s first case of the more contagious COVID-19 variant that’s been seen in the United Kingdom. 

State and local health officials said a Teton County man tested positive for the variant COVID-19 virus strain.

 He's believed to have been exposed locally. State health officer and epidemiologist Dr. Alexia Harrist says the arrival of the strain is not a surprise, but is concerning because it's more easily transmissible. 

She said Wyoming resident should wear masks, practice social distancing, avoid large gatherings and stay at home when ill unless seeking medical care.

"This is going to get you to your local farmer's freezer." LB 324 is similar to steps taken by Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon and Wyoming to increase local meat-processor capacity. Industry groups representing large-scale producers warned the measure could compromise food safety because consumers could purchase shares of animals processed at sites where U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors are not required to be present. Johnathan Hladik, policy director at the Center for Rural Affairs said local lockers must follow both state and federal regulations for food safety, which allow processing without on-site inspectors for personal use. He added small businesses preparing meat are seasoned professionals with a lot at stake. "These business owners take their job very seriously, and they know their reputation is on the line," Hladik maintained. "And they are not going to let contaminated meat or unsuitable meat into the market because they know that comes back to them and they know that ends their business." Hladik noted the measure also could boost economic growth especially in rural areas. Zeleny suggested local lockers can play a role in breaking the current bottleneck where farmers are waiting up to two years to get animals processed. South Dakota confirms 23 new deaths due to the coronavirus

LINCOLN — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have responded to dozens of weather-related incidents throughout the day Friday. Snow mixed with strong winds to create blizzard conditions and hazardous travel situations in many areas of eastern Nebraska.

Between midnight and 8:00 p.m. CT, troopers responded to more than 30 crashes, performed nearly 125 motorist assists, and assisted other agencies with more than 20 additional incidents. The vast majority of those incidents have occurred in the Lincoln and Omaha areas.

One trooper’s patrol unit was struck while responding to a crash, but the trooper was not injured. The incident occurred near mile marker 417 on eastbound Interstate 80, at approximately 11:05 a.m. The trooper had just arrived to assist additional troopers at the scene of another crash. Shortly after the trooper parked on the shoulder, a semi jack-knifed behind him and slid into the patrol vehicle. The trooper was still inside the vehicle and was buckled up at the time of the crash. He was not injured.

Troopers will remain on the road throughout the evening hours Friday as the weather pattern continues to move through the area. Any motorist who needs assistance on the road can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 and speak directly with an NSP dispatcher.

All motorists are urged to use caution when traveling in adverse weather conditions and to prepare before hitting the road. Up-to-date road conditions are available any time with&nbsp;<a href="http://www.511.nebraska.gov/">Nebraska 511</a>.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A federal judge has ordered Indian Health Services to release a report investigating how one of its doctors was able to sexually abuse boys on Indian reservations in South Dakota and Montana. 

Stanley Patrick Weber, the former pediatrician, was sentenced last year for sexual abuse he committed on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Weber was also convicted of similar crimes against boys on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana.

Charles Red Willow, a 26-year-old from Rapid City, and Ashley Nagy, a 29-year-old from Greeley, Colorado, were found dead from multiple bullet wounds inside a car at the park.

CHADRON – Chadron State College classes will be dismissed Monday&nbsp;to allow students to attend events in honor of MLK Day.

Laura Clay of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is president of the CSC Social Science Club and co-organizer of the event with Dr. Dave Nesheim and Dr. Justin Curtis, faculty advisers.

Morning sessions in the Student Center Ballroom will include a 10 a.m. discussion led by Dr. Kurt Kinbacher covering the history of protest through the rights, responsibilities, and privileges outlined and guaranteed in Constitution. Curtis will speak at 11 a.m. about the&nbsp;Evolution of the Black Lives Matter Movement.

A peaceful march will start at 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Main and Third Streets and end at the Lindeken Clock Tower, according to Clay. Members of the public are welcome to join in the march up to the edge of campus, and all participants are expected to wear masks.

At 1:30 p.m., the movie “Fruitvale Station” will be shown in the Student Center Ballroom.

“We hope this film will spark conversations related to current issues, that people will gain a better understanding of these issues, and that the entire day’s events will prompt change on the CSC campus and beyond,” Clay said.

Gov. Ricketts' Martin Luther King, Jr. Day statement

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers are reserving the right to not meet as scheduled on Tuesday due to the expected armed protests at state capitols around the country.

 State lawmakers adjourned for the week Friday and won’t return “until the call of the speaker.” 

Normally, lawmakers return to the Capitol on a specified day. 

Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers says the move gives lawmakers some flexibility in case they need to meet later. 

The move comes after a mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to try to prevent Congress from certifying the election of President-elect Joe Biden.

 Protests are also expected at state capitols, although one that took place outside Nebraska’s Capitol earlier this month was peaceful.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue reports net tax receipts of $436 million for the month, compared to the official estimates of $440 million. 

Net sales-and-use and individual income tax collections were lower than projected, while net miscellaneous and corporate income taxes came in higher. 

Nebraska still has collected more revenue than expected in the current fiscal year that began on July 1. 

The state reports net tax receipts of $2.869 billion, which is nearly 8% above the certified forecast of $2.659 billion.

Wally A. Seiler has announced that the Darold A. Newblom Foundation is now accepting applications for grants and scholarships which will be given by the foundation in May, 2021. Mr. Newblom, a native of western Nebraska, operated the family’s farm near Hay Springs, Nebraska, until poor health forced him to retire in 1980. Following his retirement, he moved to Alliance where he continued to reside until his death on December 15, 1988.

Over 3,000 people have signed up so far! Be sure to help your elderly family, friends, and neighbors get signed up. This will put them on the list that is being coordinated with local hospital and vaccine providers, they will be called when vaccines are available. It may be several weeks.

We are vaccinating health care providers and those 75 and older first. To date, 3,855 people in the eligible populations have received the COVID vaccine in the Panhandle. This number will continue to increase with each weekly vaccine allocation to the eligible populations at the corresponding times.

100 doses are anticipated to arrive next week. Doses are allocated based on percentages of population and amount received.

“The limited supply of vaccine requires patience on all of our part,” said Kim Engel, Panhandle Public Health District Director.

One additional COVID-related death in the Panhandle is being reported. A Sheridan County male in his 60s brings the total deaths to 156.

“We share peace and comfort with the friends and loved ones in the loss of this gentleman,” said Engel.

Unified Command confirms 91 more cases of COVID in the Panhandle since last reporting on Monday, January 11.&nbsp;The investigations are underway, all close contacts will be quarantined.
