

LINCOLN, Neb. – (September 3, 2024) -&nbsp;Visit Nebraska is thrilled to announce that applications are now open to be on a stop on the 2025 Nebraska Passport. All destinations in the state are welcome to apply to become a stop. Past stops have included restaurants, museums, outdoor adventures, retail stores, wineries, breweries, arts destinations and more.

The Passport program, which celebrated its 15th year in 2024, helps travelers to discover Nebraska's hidden gems, as well as benefits the 70 chosen stops through increased visitor traffic, sales and visibility.

“For the past 15 years, businesses and travelers alike have benefited from the Nebraska Passport and from showing off the state’s hidden gems," said John Ricks, Visit Nebraska executive director. "Long-time Passporters and new visitors get to make new discoveries and long-lasting memories, and our Nebraska communities continue to see the economic benefit. Everyone wins.”

 2025 Nebraska Passport stop application now open

CHADRON—Chadron State College students are invited to an information session about Cuba Libré on Sept.10 at 11 a.m. in Old Admin Room 230.

According to History and Social Sciences Professor Dr. T. Smith, the course will take place during the second eight weeks of the fall semester, and the Study Abroad travel to Cuba will take place in early January 2025.

The course, delivered both online and face-to-face, fulfills various requirements, such as Essential Studies Program Capstone, History, and Humanities. There is also a one-credit-hour option for non-degree-seeking students, such as community members.

Alliance Police Department: The media report 

Alliance, NE – On September 1, at approximately 0900 hours, an alarm was triggered at the ATM located outside Nebraska Bank at 1320 W 3rd St. Responding officers, who were aware of similar incidents at ATMs in the Panhandle, quickly reviewed the surveillance footage from the scene. The suspect can be seen trying to forcibly open the ATM. They were driving a dark navy 2013-2015 Honda Civic.

At 0940 hours, officers located the suspect vehicle traveling on Kansas Street near Highway 385. There were two individuals inside the vehicle when it was spotted. The vehicle was located in the J&amp;C RV Park abandoned shortly after. There were no suspects in the vehicle or the immediate area. 

 In response, officers established a perimeter around the area and called for additional support. Deputies from the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol, Game Wardens with the Nebraska Game and Parks, Special Agents with BNSF and Deputies from Scottsbluff County assisted in the search. A tracker dog, drones, and four-wheelers were deployed to search the surrounding fields near Kansas and Highway 385. 

 Despite extensive efforts, the suspect remains at large. Officers are actively engaging with local businesses to gather any security footage that may provide additional leads. 

The investigation is ongoing, and we urge anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Alliance Police Department at 308-762-4955&nbsp;&nbsp;

Alliance Police Department investigates ATM alarm

CHADRON — Chadron State College senior Sutton Pohlman of Stanton, Nebraska, will present a poster about his capstone course research at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) conference in Omaha in October. Assistant Professor Clint Evrard, who will travel with Pohlman, said he is excited to share the research he and Pohlman are conducting.

Pohlman’s research is about insulin uptake in the system of a person with type II diabetes.

The NSF provided funding to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln&nbsp; through a cooperative agreement with the approval to fund sub-awards for undergraduate research. Evrard submitted a proposal to the UNL EPSCoR program and was awarded $5,000 for a laptop, which can conduct computational and quantum chemical research.

“The project is still fairly new, but Sutton will have enough data to present,” Evrard said.

Pohlman, in the pre-medicine track of the Rural Health Opportunities Program, will earn his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in December. He plans to pursue a master’s in business administration with a healthcare focus at CSC while continuing to play football. After earning an MBA, he plans to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center.&nbsp;

Evrard said he plans to publish the research he and Pohlman will conduct during Pohlman’s master’s program.

“Sutton will be a published co-author before he enters medical school, and it will get Chadron State College’s name in an article published in a major journal,” Evrard said.

Evrard said the laptop has 96 gigabytes of memory, a four-terabyte storage system, and a new Apple M3 silicon chip that runs on ARM technology, uses less energy, and creates&nbsp;less heat.

“This machine can solve thousands of equations at the same time and won't melt down when running at its highest performance. Also, if we ever want to connect to a supercomputer at a big university or a national laboratory, this will connect to those flawlessly,” Evrard said.

Pohlman said the technology can show insulin at the atomic level, which is helpful in research.

“We’re trying to figure out why insulin isn't binding to its receptor in people with type II diabetes. Insulin could be competing with a growth hormone, or be affected by changes in the pH. Other factors could prevent insulin binding. Insulin binding is important because in type II diabetes, glucose builds up in the bloodstream and can cause various issues, such as kidney and vision damage and poor circulation in the extremities,” Pohlman said.

Evrard explained that he and Pohlman are using&nbsp;ORCA, an open-source quantum chemistry software, to learn more about the delicate process of insulin binding.

“The ORCA technology, developed by a research institute in Germany, allows us to move the molecule around so we can view all the atoms at different angles. The structures work together as a molecule to produce different chemical results. We’re on the ground level with them and can keep using the software even after they start marketing it,” Evrard said.

Evrard and Pohlman describe the Apple MacBook Pro they are using as a souped-up supercomputer.

“Compared to a normal laptop, this is a Ferrari. Inside the M3 chip, there are 18 central processing units and 30 graphics processing units,” Evrard said. “We use all of those simultaneously because the ORCA platform can use another program called Open MPI, which takes all the completed computations and puts them back together into a single solution.”

Pohlman said the program finds every possible way the molecule could arrange itself and then finds the best way for the molecule to bind with insulin.

“We’re trying to capture (visual representations of) all the chemical reactions (in insulin binding) so we will eventually see the electrons and the final structure. It will be a very accurate model,” Evrard said.

Evrard added that chemists and doctors who conduct research in a wet lab measure their starting compounds and ending compounds.

“We take their work, and this program shows what happens in a chemical reaction step by step instead of just the beginning and ending products. Sutton is the first student to use this technology, and I want to get more students involved in several different research pathways,” Evrard said.

One project Evrard has planned is something he learned in his doctoral program at the University of Louisville.

“They worked on delivering cancer drugs to the system using vitamin B12 as a shuttle.&nbsp;The great thing about vitamin B12 is that it has the potential to release the cancer drug only when it arrives at the cancer site. So, the patient no longer gets chemotherapy throughout their entire body,” Evrard said.

Evrard also plans projects to capture methane from natural gas and upcycle it into usable compounds for industry such as methanol or ethanol.

The technology can also calculate the chemical interactions of nano compounds designed to be dropped on plastics that, when activated by sunlight, will break them down again into their base compounds so they can be reused in industry. &nbsp;

“The last two projects I'll put on this machine are molecular electronics and battery technologies. The goal is to calculate the quantum mechanics involved in all of these technologies very accurately,” Evrard said.

Labor Day closures of City of Alliance Facilities

Lincoln, Neb.&nbsp; — Nebraska State Troopers will be ready for busy roadways as the summer travel season comes to a close with Labor Day Weekend.

“This weekend will be busy on Nebraska roads with the start of Husker football, the final weekend of the State Fair, and Labor Day weekend,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As we close out the summer travel season, let’s work together to make this a safe weekend on the roads so that everyone reaches their destinations safely.”

Troopers continue the&nbsp;Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over&nbsp;campaign, which began on August 14 and runs through September 2. So far during the effort, troopers have made 85 arrests for driving under the influence. Troopers have also cited 58 drivers for speeding at over 100 miles per hour.

NSP also reminds motorists of multiple active construction zones on Interstate 80 that have reduced speed limits, lane shifts, and may experience congestion and slower traffic.

Each of those work zones and other potential roadway issues that arise can be found on the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">511 Nebraska</a>&nbsp;system. The *55 NSP Highway Helpline is also available 24 hours per day for any motorist in need of assistance on the road.

UPDATE: Scottsbluff police seek help locating missing woman 

Seconds slowed to the length of hours as my children waited for the clocks to confirm that final dismissal this past spring. Well, at least that is how I remember summer vacation starting at their age. My family shifted pretty seamlessly into the break and enjoyed the time off without dwelling on the past or the academic year to come. As a teacher’s husband I am fairly in tune with the schedule of continuing education then classroom/student prep during August. However, back-to-school always yields its own unique surprises and reminders of the effort spent when nobody’s looking.

A couple weeks ago I stopped by Emerson School to pick up boxes and random classroom items as teachers and staff prepared for students. Not realizing everything had been piled outside the east door, I parked on the north side and walked to the main/office entrance beside freshly mown grass. Vibrant designs in circles including the Earth, a smiley face and a heart brightened the stretch of walkway leading to the doorbell and tinted double doors. The students will surely like this, I thought. A teacher pointed me in the correct direction and I found more sidewalk art, in the style of hopscotch, in front of the recycling complete with an inspiring message: I am brave, funny, helpful, kind, strong, friendly, brave, honest, smart, creative. A perfect way to start the day as children return or step foot in the building for the first time. These fresh designs replace sidewalk paint that appeared on the northeast corner of the school a few years ago (and has since faded) to promote activity, such as hopping from letter to letter of the alphabet. Inside, golden yellow highlighted stairs to the second floor with teachers decorating for the fairytale theme. With an economy of time and expense the changes lent the elementary school what I consider “unexpected beauty”.

Keep Alliance Beautiful promotes a clean and, yes, beautiful community environment through our recycling and educational resources while encouraging people to reduce, reuse and curtail litter. There are scenes you expect – a main street without trash blowing down the bricks, and those you do not – a colorful, custom crosswalk when others only rated a fresh coat of white.

We are all called upon to do the minimum, such as mow the front lawn or pick up after the dog on a walk – which ensures an attractive town and maintains the status quo. Of course, on the other hand, certain people step up to ensure instances of unexpected beauty grace residents and visitors alike. These are changes and improvements, typically in the public sphere, that few would have argued as necessary yet add character and vibrance.

Imagination holds beauty in its mind’s eye based on memory and the will to create something new. While a public building, such as Alliance’s Learning Center or, perhaps, rows of flowers and vegetables on a former vacant lot, may qualify, I keep thinking of the role of art. To somebody passing through Alliance, Carhenge, the fountain and sunken gardens often stand out. They likely have been unaware of these gems or how much effort, expense and time went into creating, maintaining and, in the case of the gardens, rebuilding. Art is a highlight when I travel on vacation or a routine trip. This town still has a bandshell, that one sports more than a dozen murals downtown, yet another greets passersby with sculptures on the corners. A firsttime surprise may be a reason to return and learn more about the local culture.

Unexpected (often anonymous) beauty comes when something new brightens your day. It could be a painted message that will speak to certain children and never be read by others; or waking up after a heavy snow and seeing somebody has already shoveled the walk. New or old, I appreciate the positive aspects that have woven the fabric of my hometown while recognizing the patches and frayed ends. The possibilities are far from finite when we imagine how to add our special stitch that many will appreciate or prompt a solitary smile.

OMAHA, Neb. —&nbsp;The National Park Service (NPS) has&nbsp;selected Jay Sturdevant as the superintendent of Scotts Bluff National Monument and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument located in western Nebraska.

 Sturdevant is currently serving as the integrated resources division lead at Pearl Harbor National Monument and Honouliuli National Historic Site in Honolulu, Hawaii. He will assume his new role at the monuments this fall.Scotts Bluff National Monument was established in 1919 by Presidential Proclamation, making it the first time that the Antiquities Act was used to preserve a landscape based on westward expansion. The monument encompasses over 3,000 acres of prairie and bluff habitat in western Nebraska. Agate Fossil Beds National Monument was designated in 1965 to protect unique Miocene epoch fossils and associated quarries, provide a center for continuing paleontological research, and to preserve the James H. Cook and Red Cloud Native American ethnographic collection. The monument is located approximately 50 miles north of Scotts Bluff National Monument.

“I am pleased to announce Jay Sturdevant&nbsp;as the next superintendent of Scotts Bluff National Monument and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument,”&nbsp;said NPS Midwest Regional Director Bert Frost.&nbsp;“His extensive experience in natural and cultural resource management will be a great asset to both park units, along with his ability to communicate effectively across program areas and with external partners. I look forward to welcoming him back to the Midwest Region.”

Sturdevant brings over 25 years of NPS experience. He began his career working as an archeological technician at Dinosaur National Monument before serving as an archeologist and cultural resource advisor at the Midwest Archeological Center in Nebraska for 22 years. His prior experience includes an acting superintendent assignment at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site in 2017. Sturdevant received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from Colorado State University in 1999 and a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of Nebraska in 2001.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to return to Nebraska,”&nbsp;said Sturdevant. “I look forward to working with the staff, local interests, Tribal partners, and the public to develop a vision for both Nebraska parks that builds on each park’s past achievements and future goals.”&nbsp;

Jay and his wife Christina are planning to return to Nebraska this October. They enjoy spending time together hiking, camping, reading books, puzzling, playing with their dog Charlie-Jellybean, and gardening. They are looking forward to relearning how to bundle-up in wintertime.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Sturdevant selected as superintendent of Agate Fossil Beds, Scotts Bluff N. M.

To meet the needs of the community and students of western Nebraska, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) signed a 2+2 agreement, which will aid students in obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education and Skilled and Technical Science Education.&nbsp;

“We're very excited to have a signing ceremony that signifies the agreement between Western Nebraska Community College and UNL's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources,” said Mark Balschweid, UNL Professor and Head of the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication.&nbsp;“We realize there are a lot of students from this part of the state who enjoy living here and want to stay here. And we also know that there's a shortage of teachers in high schools filling critical roles that contribute to workforce development like manufacturing and agricultural.”

The program helps students from the Panhandle of Nebraska take two years of the program at WNCC, closer to home, and then transfer to UNL for three semesters. The final semester would be student teaching, where students could return to the Panhandle.&nbsp;

“We (WNCC) can do a lot of the general education courses that students will need to start off and then transfer to the University of Nebraska Lincoln and get their degree to become ag teachers or shop teachers’ skills and technical sciences instructors,” said Grant Wilson, WNCC Executive Vice President of Educational and Student Services. Students will work with both institutions to complete the programs.&nbsp;

UNL is the only institution in the state that certifies and prepares agricultural education teachers and skilled and technical sciences teachers, or industrial technology teachers, as they were previously known. The university has other agreements across Nebraska, like the one it now has with WNCC.&nbsp;

 </figure>To meet the needs of the community and students of western Nebraska, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) signed a 2+2 agreement, which will aid students in obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education and Skilled and Technical Science Education.&nbsp;“We're very excited to have a signing ceremony that signifies the agreement between Western Nebraska Community College and UNL's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources,” said Mark Balschweid, UNL Professor and Head of the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication.&nbsp;“We realize there are a lot of students from this part of the state who enjoy living here and want to stay here. And we also know that there's a shortage of teachers in high schools filling critical roles that contribute to workforce development like manufacturing and agricultural.”The program helps students from the Panhandle of Nebraska take two years of the program at WNCC, closer to home, and then transfer to UNL for three semesters. The final semester would be student teaching, where students could return to the Panhandle.&nbsp;“We (WNCC) can do a lot of the general education courses that students will need to start off and then transfer to the University of Nebraska Lincoln and get their degree to become ag teachers or shop teachers’ skills and technical sciences instructors,” said Grant Wilson, WNCC Executive Vice President of Educational and Student Services. Students will work with both institutions to complete the programs.&nbsp;UNL is the only institution in the state that certifies and prepares agricultural education teachers and skilled and technical sciences teachers, or industrial technology teachers, as they were previously known. CHADRON – The exhibition “Finding Horizons” from the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will open Friday at Chadron State College.

This exhibition features artwork from artists such as Russell T. Gordon, John Pfahl, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, and Thelma Lorie Christenson among others.&nbsp;

Finding Horizons is a collection of artworks exploring the landscape genre. According to a press release from the Sheldon Museum of Art, this group of artists has been brought together for their strong use of horizon lines through various techniques such as painting, printmaking, and photography.

The exhibit will be open to the public and free of charge in Memorial Hall’s Main Gallery Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Sept. 30.

Sheldon Statewide Exhibition 'Finding Horizons' opens at Chadron State

August 28, 2024 —&nbsp;The Nebraska Leadership Education/Action Development (LEAD) Program is pleased to announce the selection of 30 outstanding individuals who will join the program as Fellows of Nebraska LEAD Class 43. These fellows were selected based on their demonstrated leadership potential, commitment to agriculture and dedication to their communities.

Nebraska LEAD Class 43 Fellows represent a diverse group of professionals from across the state, bringing with them a wealth of experience and expertise in various sectors of Nebraska’s agricultural industry. Over the next two years, they will participate in a rigorous curriculum designed to enhance their leadership skills, broaden their understanding of domestic and global agricultural issues, and prepare them for greater roles in their communities and industries.

“I’m excited to work alongside this talented group of LEAD Fellows committed to the future of agriculture in the state,” said Kurtis Harms, Director of the Nebraska LEAD Program. “The selection process was challenging this year, as we had many quality applicants. This serves a testament to the passionate, well-qualified people who will be serving our industry for many years to come. Thirty Nebraskans Selected for Nebraska LEAD Class 43

The Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial Run, an annual race aimed at raising awareness and understanding of mental health, raised $10,000 for Nebraska Game and Parks state park trails in 2024.

To date, supporters of the Vanderheiden Memorial run have contributed more than $30,000 to the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation to support trails.

Runners from every state in the nation and all 93 Nebraska counties participated either virtually or in-person in this year’s May 25 race, which brought together hundreds of people united around raising mental health awareness. Participants used the hashtags #PreventSuicide and #Run4TJV when they shared their race stories, memories of Tyler and their connection to the outdoors.

“The outpouring of support is a true reflection of the love we have for our precious son, Tyler,” said Shannon Vanderheiden, Tyler’s mother. “Our race efforts are just a glimpse of the important work and impact that Tyler has had on the lives of others, even those who never had the privilege of meeting him.

“For many the great outdoors holds a healing power that nurtures both our physical and mental health well-being, and we are humbled and grateful for the support we receive through Ty’s race to continue raising awareness about the importance of mental health well-being and suicide prevention. Thank you for being part of our family’s journey. Together, we are building a legacy of love and hope that will live on for generations to come.”

The annual event began in 2020 with the intent of being a space for healing and support for those who struggle with mental health or know someone who has, and since 2022, has benefitted trails across the state.

Funds donated this year will be used to support trail upgrades at Smith Falls State Park, home to Nebraska’s highest waterfall, and the donation could trigger access of up to $32,000 in matching federal Recreation Trails Program funds if a grant application by Game and Parks is successful this fall.

The run is organized by the Platte River Fitness Series, with support by West Central District Health Department, where Vanderheiden serves as executive director.

“Memorial races like this one resonate with runners in a special way,” said Trudy Merritt, series director. “Attaching something bigger than ourselves to a hard effort creates space for meaning making, something necessary for human flourishing.”

People continue to connect with the race’s message, helping to spread the word and shine a light on mental health and available resources.
