Alliance outdoor warning siren maintenance planned

One of the many outstanding programs offered by the Alliance Recreation Center (ARC) is the ARC AfterSchool program. This year there has been a big change. The program has moved from the ARC location to Grandview School.

Why the change? With the program consistently having a waiting list, capacity building was the main goal. The program served 45 students in the 2023/24 school year, and more requests were rolling in. ARC obviously needed to serve more families and needed a larger location.

ARC AfterSchool is now a licensed program through the Department of Health and Human Services. Continuing to host the program at the ARC would only allow for 24 children in the facility unless ARC restricted services to their members.

Former ARC Director Mara Andersen requested that Alliance Public Schools allow the use of their elementary schools for the program, and the School Board approved that request. The Grandview location has been licensed to serve 75 students, so ARC doesn't have to turn anyone away! ARC is licensed to use the playground, multipurpose room (gym and cafeteria), music and art rooms, and the library. Many communities use a similar model; both Scottsbluff and McCook YMCAs operate after school programs in partnership with public school systems.

How does ARC AfterSchool work? The program operates on the Alliance Public Schools (APS) schedule. The program runs from the school dismissal time to 5:30 pm. Emerson students ride to Grandview on the existing cross-town bus. ARC transports students from IELS and St. Agnes to Grandview. ARC also will transport students who participate in programs at the Alliance Recreation Center and 7th Street Dance Studio during ARC AfterSchool program hours.

ARC AfterSchool Child Care Director Sarah Meyer has a degree in education and prepares lesson plans for every day's activities. First, students do their homework, with help from ARC staff and volunteers when they need it. Then they have physical activity time and are served a healthy snack. They participate in STEM-based activities like Lego Challenges, Engineering Challenges, and more. Thursday is "Clubs Day." Students vote on clubs they would like to form to pursue specific interests: sports, art, STEM, and reading are all possibilities.

ARC provides enough staff to ensure that a teacher has no more than 15 students. Each group must have an adult teacher, many of whom are APS paraprofessionals. High school students provide more assistance. The ARC is excited to continue partnerships with Carnegie Arts Center, UNL Extension, and Keep Alliance Beautiful to continue to have a wide variety of projects and experiences for kids. The Health Occupations Students Association at Alliance High School worked on programs with grades 3-5 last year.

What does it cost to enroll a child in ARC After School? ARC members pay $45 and non-members pay $55 per week. Scholarships are available for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch, so they pay $30. There is also a $30 initial enrollment fee. Families pay weekly, and the cost is pro-rated based on the school schedule. Scholarships are generously provided by Snow-Redfern Foundation, United Way of Western Nebraska, the Mission Store, and ARC Make More Possible donors.

The success of ARC After School identified a need to develop ARC Summer Camp and School Days Out. These will continue to be held at the ARC and have a different fee structure.

Having a safe place for children at a low cost allows parents to be employed and not worry about taking time off to handle school pick-up and drop-off or use vacation to stay home when school isn’t in session. ARC also meets the needs of kids who are too old for day care but not old enough to be home alone.

Getting Ahead: ARC After School Program 

Lincoln, NE – August 27, 2024 – Due to high sales, officials in the states participating in the Mega Millions® Lotto game have increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Tuesday, August 27 drawing to $582 million or $286.9 million with the cash option selected.

Upper Niobrara White NRD crop water use report, week of Aug. 26

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -&nbsp;The Western Community College Area (WCCA) Board of Governors is pleased to announce that the District 3 vacancy has been filled by Starr Lehl of Minatare.

Lehl was sworn in at the August Board of Governor's meeting. Lehl will serve the remaining term of former District 3 representative Misty Curtis, who resigned to accept the WNCC Alliance Campus Director position.

“We are pleased to welcome Starr to the board,” said Karen Anderson, WCCA board&nbsp;chair. “She brings decades of experience in public service. She will be a great asset to the Board."

Since April 2023, Lehl has been with GROW Nebraska, assisting small business owners and entrepreneurs with the implementation of the Nebraska Small Business Assistance Act Grant program. Prior to that, she served as the Economic Development Director for the City of Scottsbluff for five years. She also spent nearly 15 years as a business development consultant for the State of Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

Lehl is a member of several civic organizations, including the Nebraska Economic Developers Association, Western Nebraska Development Network, Small Business Compliance Advisory Panel Member, and Panhandle Saddle Club. Lehl was also the mayor of Gering from 1998 to 2006.

Scotts Bluff N. M. to transition to fall, winter operating hours

Chadron Open Art is excited to announce an array of engaging and educational fall classes starting this September. Whether you're interested in baking, art, or exploring the connection between science and art, there's something for everyone. All classes are held at our location at 223 Main Street and are designed to inspire creativity and learning.

Learn simple baking recipes, how to read recipes, measure ingredients, and practice kitchen safety. This class is perfect for young aspiring bakers aged 8 and up. Classes are limited to 10 students to ensure personalized instruction.

Sessions are held on Mondays from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The cost is $60 per month per student. Classes start Monday, September 9th.

Explore the basics of art and challenge yourself with new projects and mediums. Our art classes cover painting, ceramics, drawing, and more. These classes are suitable for ages 5 and up and are limited to 10 students.

Lincoln, NE – The Nebraska Arborists Association (NAA) is proud to announce that Tom Wiens of Bayard, NE, has been awarded the prestigious NAA Lifetime Achievement Award, presented during the 2024 NAA Field Day on Friday, August 16, 2024. This award recognizes Tom's enduring dedication to arboriculture and his significant contributions to the NAA over the years.

Tom Wiens’s journey in arboriculture began at a young age, working alongside his father at the Wiens Tree Surgery Company. These early experiences laid the groundwork for what would become a lifelong commitment to the care and preservation of trees. Tom pursued his education at People's Bible College and further honed his expertise through extensive training, including Davy’s Tree School and mentorship under the legendary Alex Shigo. His passion and knowledge have not only benefited his clients but have also enriched the broader arborist community.

&nbsp; A trailblazer in the industry, Tom was among the founding members of the Rocky Mountain International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Chapter in 1974. In 1982, he moved with his family to the Panhandle of Nebraska, where he continued his professional journey, attending the NAA’s Arborist School in 1985 and later serving as the NAA President in 1992.In 1985, Tom founded his own company, A-1 Landscape, which later became Modern Arboriculture, reflecting his commitment to innovative and sustainable tree care practices. His work has been concentrated in the southern half of the Panhandle and into Wyoming, where his dedication to tree health and integrity has earned him a stellar reputation.

Tom holds multiple certifications through the ISA, including Certified Arborist, Certified Tree Worker/Climber, and Certified Arborist/Municipal Specialist. He is an active member of the ISA, the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA), and the Nebraska Arborists Association.

Tom’s personal life is just as rich and rewarding as his professional one. He met his wife, Vickie, in 1978, and the couple celebrated 44 years of marriage in June 2024. Together, they have one son, Brian, who is married to Katy, and they are the proud grandparents of two granddaughters, Ana and Ivy. Vickie plays a crucial role in the business, handling secretarial duties, editing Tom’s writings, and assisting with tree diagnosis when needed.

Beyond his business, Tom has a passion for education, frequently teaching at local garden clubs and engaging with the Master Gardener program. His goal is to educate others on healthy tree care, a mission he fulfills through both his teaching and his widely recognized tree sample photography, which has been featured in Alex Shigo’s writings and Arbor Day Foundation videos.

Tom’s dedication to the field of arboriculture has left an indelible mark on the community and the industry. The NAA Board, Staff, and members extend their heartfelt congratulations to Tom Wiens on this well-deserved honor.

Tom Wiens of Bayard Receives NAA Lifetime Achievement Award at 2024 Field Day

CHADRON – Two Wyoming high school students advised by Chadron State College alum Devin Shimic Wells placed second in a national contest with a presentation about their food pantry in the Gillette, Wyoming, area. Thunder Basin High School students Paizley Tyrrell and Makiah Johnson qualified for nationals in Seattle with their presentation in Cheyenne at the Wyoming State competition of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Wells said the national judges were excited to hear that the Thunder Basin High School FCCLA chapter would continue to use the food pantry.

“They loved how we worked with the elementary schools in our area to continue to fill the box by conducting food drives,” said Wells, who is married to Ryan Wells, a 2011 CSC graduate.&nbsp;

Wells, who graduated from CSC with a bachelor’s degree in 2012 and a master’s degree in 2015, said she was impressed how Tyrrell and Johnson took the initiative to obtain a donated box and graphics.

Wells said the school’s administrative team will provide materials for a welding class to create a sturdier box and paint it for the 2024-25 school year.

Before transferring to Thunder Basin in 2017, Wells taught at Twin Spruce Junior High School in Gillette. She’s taught a wide variety of classes, including eighth-grade Family and Consumer Science, Child and Family Studies, Introduction to Early Childhood Education, Advanced Early Childhood Education, Fashion and Textile Design I and II, and Food, Nutrition, and Wellness. She also directed Cafe Latte, a school-based food business.

Wyoming students of CSC alum win national award

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that a federal jury in Lincoln, Nebraska, returned a guilty verdict today, August 21, 2024, against Tyler Denby, age 39, formerly of Alliance, Nebraska, for one count of transportation of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. 

The verdict subjects Denby to a potential prison term of up to twenty years on each count and a minimum of five years on the transportation count. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis presided over the trial and set sentencing for November 21, 2024.

On July 30th&nbsp;of 2021, Alliance Police Department received two separate calls for assistance concerning an individual threatening others in the Alliance area. Denby, who was then a Montana resident visiting the town of Alliance, was identified as the suspect and was contacted at a local gas station.&nbsp; 

During the encounter, the officer’s gained probable cause to search Denby’s vehicle when a marijuana pipe was spotted in his pocket. A stolen firearm was then located on Denby’s person. During the search of his vehicle, a large number of electronic devices, along with some other very concerning items, including a pillowcase filled with stained children’s underwear, were discovered by the searching law enforcement officers with the Alliance Police Department and Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office. The items were seized from the vehicle and Denby was arrested for several state crimes. A search warrant was received for the numerous electronic devices. The devices were later reviewed by the Alliance Police Department. Three microSD cards which had been located in Denby’s wallet contained a substantial amount of child pornography files. While Denby was in custody, he was interviewed by law enforcement and he admitted to having child pornography on those devices.&nbsp; He also admitted to travelling from Montana to Nebraska with the child pornography on his devices.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. This case was investigated by the Alliance Police Department.

Former Alliance Man Convicted by Jury for Transportation & Possession of Child Pornography

On Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at approximately 11:12p.m., K9 Officer Orsborn observed a vehicle traveling near Third Street and Maple Street with a headlight that was out. Officer Orsborn conducted a traffic stop and observed indicators of impairment coming from the driver. Officer Orsborn conducted a DUI Investigation and the driver was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence. Incident to arrest, the driver was searched and a small amount of suspected methamphetamine was located on her person.

Officer Orsborn deployed his K9 partner, Sukey to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle. Sukey alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. As a result of the traffic stop, approximately 1.2 grams of suspected cocaine was seized in addition to the suspected methamphetamine found on the driver. Sergeant Young conducted a drug recognition expert evaluation on the driver subsequent to her arrest.

The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Jessica Cash was arrested on requested charges of Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, in violation of NRS 60-6, 196, a Class W Misdemeanor and Possession of a Controlled Substance, in violation of NRS 28-416, a Class IV Felony. 

Cash is being held at the Dawes County Jail and bond has been set at 10% of $10,000.

Visitors travelling through Valentine to access Smith Falls State Park will be affected by road construction starting this fall.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation will start work on the removal and reconstruction of the Nebraska Highway 12 bridge over the Minnechaduza Creek 3 miles east of Valentine. This road closure will occur Sept. 3 through May 23, 2025.

The detour to reach Smith Falls SP from Valentine, will be: travel 6 miles north on U.S. Highway 83, 3 miles east on unpaved 906th&nbsp;Road, 1 mile south on unpaved Nolett Road, and then 2 miles east on unpaved Whitetail Road to connect to Nebraska Highway 12. The road for Smith Falls is 8 miles east on the highway.

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;–&nbsp;At the request of Governor Jim Pillen, a federal disaster declaration has been granted that will trigger the release of funds to assist multiple Nebraska counties impacted by a series of storms May 20 – June 3.

Counties eligible for funding include Burt, Butler, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas, Dundy, Fillmore, Hamilton, Hayes, Hitchcock, Howard, Keith, Platte, Polk, Red Willow, Saunders and Washington.&nbsp;For the timeframe indicated above, those counties sustained significant damage resulting from severe thunderstorms, high winds, tornadoes, heavy rain and flooding.

Lincoln County, which was included in a state disaster declaration, did not qualify for inclusion in the federal request, due to not meeting the threshold for federal aid.

On August 14th District Judge Travis O' Gorman presided over the sentencing of Yadira L. Garza.  Garza was found guilty on  a count of Attempted Use of a Deadly Weapon To Commit A Felony. 

 The charges are based on an incident involving a stand-off with Alliance police in November of 2023.  The stand-off involved the Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team, Nebraska Game and Parks, Alliance Fire Department, Scottsbluff Police Department and other organizations. 

 Garza was sentenced to a term of not less than six years and not more than twelve years.  Garza did receive credit for 263 days previously served, and has been ordered to pay the costs of prosecution.

WASHINGTON&nbsp;--&nbsp;FEMA announced that federal disaster assistance is available to the state of&nbsp;Nebraska to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by the severe storms, straight-line winds&nbsp;and flooding from May 20-June 3, 2024.&nbsp;

Public assistance federal funding is available to the state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis&nbsp;for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by&nbsp;the severe storms, straight-line winds&nbsp;and flooding in Burt, Butler, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas, Dundy, Fillmore, Hamilton, Hayes, Hitchcock, Howard, Keith, Platte, Polk, Red Willow, Saunders and Washington counties.&nbsp;

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.&nbsp;

Andrew P. Meyer has&nbsp;been named Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected areas. Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further assessments.&nbsp;

FEMA Region 7WASHINGTON&nbsp;--&nbsp;FEMA announced that federal disaster assistance is available to the state of&nbsp;Nebraska to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by the severe storms, straight-line winds&nbsp;and flooding from May 20-June 3, 2024.&nbsp;Public assistance federal funding is available to the state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis&nbsp;for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by&nbsp;the severe storms, straight-line winds&nbsp;and flooding in Burt, Butler, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas, Dundy, Fillmore, Hamilton, Hayes, Hitchcock, Howard, Keith, Platte, Polk, Red Willow, Saunders and Washington counties.&nbsp;Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.&nbsp;Andrew P. Meyer has&nbsp;been named Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected areas. Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further assessments.&nbsp;
