Robert “Bob” E. Sterkel, 87, passed away May 8, 2023 at his home in Gering, Nebraska after struggling for many years with Alzheimer’s. Bob was born on July 15, 1935 in Minatare, Nebraska to Conrad Sterkel Jr. and Anna (Schnell) Sterkel. At his request, a cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date at the Alliance Veteran’s Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or Faith Lutheran Church. Bob grew up on a farm near Potter, Nebraska. After graduating high school, Bob enlisted in the Army. He served during the Korean Conflict and was stationed throughout the US and Japan.

His military obligation complete, Bob began his 30 year career with General Motors at their production plant in Van Nuys, California, retiring as the plant manpower coordinator. After his retirement from GM, Bob spent five years with PAS Inc., producing General Motors modified and prototype vehicles in California, Louisiana, and Michigan.

Bob married Patsy Green (who he met on a blind date) on August 29, 1958. Two boys later, their family was complete. Their “fun time” as a family was spent attending the boys’ functions, square dancing, golfing, camping, water skiing, and dirt biking/dune buggy riding in the desert. After Patsy’s retirement, Bob was able to achieve his goal of driving his Foretravel Motorcoach through Alaska, all the lower 48 states, the maritime, and the Canadian Providences, while spending the winters in Palm Springs playing golf. In 2003, Bob completed his bucket list by living in a small home with a view on a golf course, and Bob and Patsy returned to the “good life,” moving to Gering, Nebraska.

Bob is survived by his wife, Patsy; sons, Gary (Rene) of Dayton, Texas, and Bryan (Jennifer) of The Woodlands, Texas; granddaughters, Dana (Rolando) Zuniga of Watsonville, California, and Katey Sterkel of Santa Cruz, California; grandsons, Colton Sterkel of Reno, Nevada, and Ethen Sterkel of Missoula Montana; great-grandchildren, Paris and Christopher Zuniga; sister, Bonnie Volner of Palmdale, California; brother and sister-in-law, James and Connie Green of Rapid City, South Dakota; plus many nieces and nephews he visited during his travels.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, LeRoy and Rodney; and sister, Marilyn.

Richard R. Brougham, 84, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska passed away Friday, May 12, 2023, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 22, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Reverence Funeral Parlor in Scottsbluff with Pastor Gary Hashley officiating. Inurnment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Richard was born October 5, 1938, in Mondovi, Wisconsin to Ruth J. (Johnson) and James Edward Brougham. Richard went into the military following high school and was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corp from 1957 to 1960; Delta Company 7th&nbsp;Battalion-FMF.

He went on to work for Caterpillar Company in Aurora, Illinois after his military service. He later worked for several of his beloved friends including Tab and Cathy Ruffing at their carwash, and Scott and Barb Simmerman at their laundromats. Richard worked in the construction industry and heavy equipment operation until he retired.

Richard married his first wife, Betty, and to this union they had two sons, Robert and Michael, and one daughter, Cindy Lou. They divorced and Richard married Melita, his second wife. The couple divorced and he later met the love of his life, Charlene Kishiyama. They married October 6, 1984, in Scottsbluff and were married for 35 years until Charlene “Charly” passed away in April 2020.

Richard loved to go hunting in his younger years. He was an avid fisherman and could be found at the lake and streams fishing whenever he had a chance. He was very good at woodworking and made numerous birdhouses, which were never duplicated as they were always different. Many people stopped by his home and bought birdhouses from him.

Richard enjoyed caring for his yard and was proud of his flowers every spring. During Richard’s later years, he enjoyed going for an ice cream cone and driving out to Robidoux Pass to see his longhorns. He often took a daily trip to the Stagecoach to get a piece of pizza for lunch.

He was a very kind, considerate, caring, and funny person. He always had a good joke or something to make you laugh and brighten your day. Richard also enjoyed writing poems in his alone time. They are beautifully written and meaningful, some of which have also been published.

Survivors include his brother, Roger Brougham of Cambridge, NE; daughter, Cindy Lou Mendez; sons, Robert and Michael Brougham; nieces, Kelly Cappel and Kristi Geohagen; and nephews, Scott, Steve, and Shannon Brougham.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James and Ronald Brougham; and wife, Charlene.

He enlisted in the US Navy and served on the aircraft carrier the USS Oriskany as an aircraft handler on the flight deck from 1966-1970. After getting out of the Navy he worked for Associated Grocers, Magnolia Mobile Home (34 years as leadman in plumbing), First Student, and Menard's. Gary married Ellen Dowell in 1977. They have two children Tara (Doug) Sheets, Dustin (Tiffany) Mattley, and two granddaughters Madison and Julianne Mattley. Gary also has a son Troy Short. Gary enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle, riding horses, listening to music, camping, driving his mustang cars and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen; daughter, Tara, and son, Dustin, and their spouses; granddaughters, Maddy and Juju; sister, Margaret Knowles; brother-in-law, Don Dowell and wife Colleen; numerous nieces, nephews, and many family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law; and his 3 brothers, Dennis, Mick and Tim.

Gary Lee Mattley (1947 - 2023)

Ronald J. Myers of Bridgeport, Nebraska passed away unexpectedly on May 15, 2023 at the age of 81.

Ron was born in Blackfoot, Idaho on April 19, 1942 to Homer John and Evelyn June (Tinney) Myers. He was the oldest of nine children. In his younger years he lived in the Palisade/Stratton, Nebraska area. The Myers family later relocated to Broadwater, Nebraska where he spent his formative years. Ron attended Broadwater schools where he graduated high school in 1962.

Ron served for almost 2 years in the United States Army from 1965 to 1966 in the Vietnam War. He was honored with numerous medals including The Good Conduct and Rifle Marksman. He was very proud of his service.

Ron later met his wife and love of his life in Broadwater, Dalene Kay Sherman. When he first asked her to marry him, she said no! Thankfully, she finally said yes and they were married on March 29, 1968. Where they were together for 50 years.

Ron was a jack of all trades! He could do almost anything if asked. He was the most helpful, hardworking man. He loved to ride horses and work cattle, a true cowboy. At one point in time he was a member of the Broadwater Volunteer Fire Department. Two of his most cherished jobs were working on the Anderson Ranch and the Browns Creek Irrigation District.

When Ron wasn’t working, you could always find him spending time with family and friends. He loved to drink coffee and gossip with his coffee gang in Bridgeport. He enjoyed card games such as Pitch and Pinnacle, watching Nebraska Football, and in the past a game of baseball or bowling. His team even won 2nd place in a bowling league at one time.

Ron and Dalene had 7 kids, and they also fostered several children over the course of 30 plus years. Kids were the biggest joy in their lives. They were even honored with an award for opening their hearts and home to a countless number of children.

Ron is survived by his children: Tim (Carrie), Clark, Valarie, Jazzariah “Jazz”, Maricella, and Marisol. His brothers, Larry and Kirby, and sister Linda Wiggins. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren and his dog, Tucker.

Ron was proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Dalene, his son, Steven, his siblings Tracy, Delia, Sheila, Patrick, and Jon. As well as his parents Homer and Evelyn.

Ron lived a good long life, where he cherished every moment.

His Celebration of Life will be Monday, May 22 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jonathan Seng officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the Nebraska Army National Guard and Sons of the American Legion Post, Bridgeport. She was born on July 7, 1943, in Ordway, Colorado, to Joe and Ricarda Corrales. She grew up in Scottsbluff, attending Victory Hill School and Scottsbluff High School, where she developed a love for learning that would stay with her for the rest of her life. She had several passions, including sewing, dancing, and reading. She was a gifted seamstress and spent countless hours creating beautiful pieces of clothing for herself and her customers. She also loved to dance and could often be found twirling and spinning around the house with a big smile on her face. But perhaps her greatest passion was her spiritual life. She spent many hours cultivating her faith and prayerful practices and was deeply committed to the study and understanding of life and life’s mysteries. She was known for her unwavering faith in God. We will miss her spiritual counsel and will always remember her steadfast faith, attention to beauty, and curiosity about life. May that curiosity now be fulfilled and may she rest in peace with God. Rachel is survived by her daughters Sabrina (Robbie) Mann and Monique (Matt) Larsen; grandchildren Jonathon Carpenter, Sierra Overton, Daniel Rivera, and Diego Larsen (All of whom she loved spending time with on the family farm when they were little); and great-grandchildren Harrison, Cosette, and Lulu Overton. Rachel McCain (1943 - 2023)

Christopher Lee Fraedrich, 43, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2023 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff following and extended illness.

He was born on February 6, 1980 in Alliance, NE to Gerald Dean and Sharon Lee (Weisgerber) Fraedrich. He was a 1998 graduate of Alliance High School.&nbsp; Over the years Chris worked at Nebraska Typewriter, Ace Hardware and Dayco before ill health made it impossible to continue.&nbsp; Chris loved to hunt, fish and work on cars as well as growing a large pumpkin patch in his garden.

He is survived by his father, Dean, his sister, Rose Marie Lopez and her husband, Francisco, 3 nephews, one niece, a grandniece and a grandnephew.&nbsp; He is also survived by numerous aunt, uncles and cousins.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his mother, his grandparents and other aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was a 1998 graduate of Alliance High School.&nbsp; Over the years Chris worked at Nebraska Typewriter, Ace Hardware and Dayco before ill health made it impossible to continue.&nbsp; Chris loved to hunt, fish and work on cars as well as growing a large pumpkin patch in his garden.He is survived by his father, Dean, his sister, Rose Marie Lopez and her husband, Francisco, 3 nephews, one niece, a grandniece and a grandnephew.&nbsp; He is also survived by numerous aunt, uncles and cousins.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his mother, his grandparents and other aunts, uncles and cousins.A graveside service will be held May 27, 2023 at 2pm at the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp;A reception will follow at the V.F.W. &nbsp;Online condolences may be left at www.batesgould.com with Bates-Gould Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Alvin E. Mundt, 90, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at Highland Park Care Center.

He was born December 11, 1932 in Box Butte County, Nebraska to Albert and Ella (Lance) Mundt.

Following his school years, Alvin worked as a ranch hand before enlisting in the United States Army in 1951.&nbsp; He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954.&nbsp; On December 4, 1954 he married Dorothy M. Hiltz in Scottsbluff.&nbsp;

Alvin worked as a farmhand in the area for many years before eventually moving to town where he worked for Trinidad Bean and later for WESTCO as a route driver.&nbsp; After retirement, he still worked various jobs as Alvin was a man who enjoyed staying active.

He was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, and the Evangelical Free Church.&nbsp; Alvin enjoyed fishing and especially spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as they always said he was a kid at heart.

Alvin is survived by his daughters, Cindy Martin of Pocatello, ID, Pamela (Steve) Welch of Gering, Terri (John) Harmon of Clearwater, KS, and Sandy Mundt of Alliance; 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, 3 brothers, 4 sisters, and his son-in-law, Dave Martin.

Lloyd Dean Howell was born November 16, 1942 in Alliance, Nebraska to Ernest Louis and Elma Loretta (Hashman) Howell. He died November 29, 2022.

He served in the US Army from 1961-1964. Most of his time was spent in the Panama Canal Zone.

On May 23, 1965 he was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Myszkowski.

Lloyd retired from BNSF as a carman in 2005.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #7, Eagles, Lions Club, and First Presbyterian Church where he served as an usher and elder. Lloyd loved to watch the Alliance Spartans play baseball. He was a diehard Nebraska Cornhusker fan and liked the Las Vegas (or whatever city they were playing in) Raiders. He was known for his woodworking.&nbsp; He made over twenty-five sets of Noah’s ark with thirty-two pairs of animals for each ark. He also made beautiful crosses and nativity puzzles.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Joanna Kaye Hoover, brother and sister-in- law, Darrell and Dixie Howell, and brother, Gordon Howell.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pat, and daughter, Lora (Steve) Sullivan all of Alliance, his grandchildren, Allison Hoover (Chris George), Columbus; OH; Noah Hoover, Colorado; Kathryn (Josh) Martin, Chadron; Sorcha (Josh) Colerick, Scottsbluff; and McKenna Leach (Joe Covalt), of Alliance, and his great-grandchildren, Cadence and Beckett Martin, Sophia Leach, Hendrix Colerick, and twins coming in the spring of 2023. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins

Lloyd D. Howell (1942 - 2023)

Michael Asa Kesselring was born January 27th 1954, in Blue Earth, Minnesota to Merlin and Carol Kesselring. 

He is survived by his wife Linda Joy Kesselring, his kids Nick (Krystal) Kesselring, Angie Mullen, and Jeff (Joni) Mullen, grandson Asa Kesselring, sisters Sue (Darwin) Olson, Romi (Tim) Brown, and Annette Mahone, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

 Mike grew up and lived in Blue Earth, MN where he quickly departed after high school to serve in the U.S Military as an Army Military Police. When he got out of the service, he moved to Montana and met the beautiful Linda Joy at the Silver Spur restaurant and bar. After a kiss on New Year’s Eve, just 1 minute before midnight…it all began. Marriage, kids, and then back to Minnesota for college. After earning his degree, he and his business partner opened their own practice and treatment center acting as chemical dependency counselors. 

In the meantime, a notion by Merlin and Roberta Kesselring began the inspiration and vision that led to building and working at High Plains Homestead in 1996. In 1998, they departed from Minnesota and permanently moved to the badlands to ultimately take over and run High Plains Homestead and The Drifter Cookshack. Upon the retirement of Merlin and Roberta, Mike, Linda and family took over the cookshack and continued creating what many of us remember today, with many years of success under their belt, ample stories, countless memories and too many visitors to count. Cowboy beans, fresh grilled steaks by Mike himself, and of course Linda’s famous home-made pies, are just a fraction of what made the homestead and cookshack an absolute hit for visitors and locals alike. You certainly didn’t get the full experience unless you took a moment to sit around the fire with Mike and hear one of his many colorful stories. Well, because after all we “can’t let a little truth get in the way of a good story”. 

After selling High Plains in 2019 they moved on to new ventures, Mike partnering up with Chadrad communications becoming the local radio celebrity and top selling salesperson in the history of Chadrad communications. Mike and Linda moved to Harrison, NE where they have been active members of the Harrison Bible Church, and where Mike was an active participant in the worship team. 

Along with many of his accomplishments and engagements Mike was a mentor to many, a substitute teacher, community leader, active civic engagement speaker, served as the president of the Western Nebraska Tourism Coalition Board, along with the Chair of the Dawes County Travel Board and avid supporter of mutual collaboration. 

Mike had a profound ability to richly enhance the lives of those around him through his bright and eccentric personality that was completely contagious. Mike will always be remembered as the biggest “tall tale teller” of our time, community supporter, relationship builder, bullshitter, who ultimately cared and loved the folks around him more than he cared about our opinion of him, and that will forever have a lasting impact on our entire community, counties far and wide.

James (Jim) Richard Atchison passed away on May 10, 2023 at Great Plain Health in North Platte, NE. Jim was born on May 20, 1947 in Chadron, Nebraska to James S. Atchison and Kathryn Kieffe Atchison. Jim grew up in Chadron, where he attended East Ward, Chadron Prep, and the Assumption Academy. On December 12, 1967 he married Dorothy Colene Lien in Rapid City, SD. Out of this union they were blessed with two sons James William and Timothy Charles.

Jim spent his career working for the Flower Shoppe, Wahlstrom Ford, Coca-Cola and Chadron State College, where he retired from in 2013.

From the time he was young, he was interested in motorcycles, cars, and shooting pool. His favorite pastime was going for rides through the country side and enjoying the beauty of nature.

His days were spent enjoying time with friends and family and lending a helping hand. He brought joy to many by his jovial and generous personality.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Jo Atchison and brother-in-law George Bamsey.

He is survived by his two sons, James Atchison (Sarah) and Tim Atchison (Erin), grandchildren Aurora Alexandria, Arick Amos, Zane and Olivia; brother William (Bill) Atchison and sister Rhonda Bamsey and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends

Funeral Services for Gerald Lux of Crawford, Nebraska will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2023 @ 10:00 AM at United Methodist Church in Crawford, Nebraska. Burial will be held in Crawford City Cemetery.

Gerald Wayne Lux was born on August 2, 1924 in Sioux County Nebraska. He was the oldest child of Carl Jacob Lux and Nona Lucille (Chitty) Lux. His sister Karlene was born 5 years later. When Gerald was 7 years old, his parents divorced. His mother and sister moved back to Iowa to live with his grandmother. Gerald lived with his father, who worked as a farm laborer in the Sandhills. Both parents remarried and half brother Ben Ferguson and Dale Lux were added to his family.

When Gerald was 12 years old, he went to live with his mother and stepfather north of Crawford. Gerald attended school in Whitney, often riding his horse to school. The janitor was kind enough to let Gerald in the school to warm up by the boiler on cold mornings, which earned him the nickname “Lucky”. Gerald graduated from Whitney High School with the class of 1942, the last class to graduate from Whitney.

After high school graduation, Gerald enlisted in the Navy. He knew that he would likely be drafted and wanted to avoid the marching that was involved in serving in the army. He was interested in serving in the submarine service but was too tall to qualify. After basic training in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where he was trained as a radioman Gerald spent most of his 3 years of duty aboard the seaplane tender USS Chincoteague in the Pacific theater. He visited Hawaii as well as several other Pacific Islands during this time.

After his discharge from the Navy, Gerald returned to Crawford where after a short try at college he worked for his stepfather Charls Ferguson. While attending a dance in Crawford, he met Alice Williams. After dating for 2 ½ years, Alice and Gerald married and began a 72-year marriage and partnership. Gerald always said that he agreed to marry Alice, in part due to her promise to make him homemade bread.

During the first years of their marriage, Alice and Gerald lived in Crawford. They eventually bought an acreage 8 miles southeast of Crawford, close to where Alice’s parents lived.

When they first moved to their place, they lived in a railroad boxcar with no electricity or running water. Gerald built a house with help from Alice’s father and moved their family, which included two children, into the house. Four additional children joined the family while living on their place on Sawlog Road. Gerald worked at a variety of jobs including as a section foreman for the CB&amp;Q Railroad, at the Crawford sale barn, and as a salesman for Moorman’s Feeds. These jobs supplemented the income from the farming and ranching. The agricultural operations included raising cattle as well as occasionally pigs or sheep. There were also milk cows until after all the children had left home.

After the children were grown, Gerald retired from his off-farm jobs but continued to raise cattle until he was in his 70s and raise some hay until he was in his late 80s. Gerald was able to travel including fulfilling his promise to Alice to take her to Hawaii. He enjoyed square-dancing, fishing, and especially playing cards.

Gerald is survived by children Wayne (Patti) Lux and their children Bill and Molly; Lynne (Mike) Reeder; Jack Lux and children Carrie, Kristina, Amelia, and Tabitha; Geraldine (Matt) Erickson and children Colin, Megan and Cody; Carl (Sheila) Lux and children Taylor and Jacob; Tim (Amanda) Lux and children Kaiden and Brailyn; as well as numerous great grandchildren.

Gerald was preceded in death by his wife Alice Lux, parents Carl and Nona, stepfather Charls Ferguson, sister Karlene, half-brothers Ben Ferguson and Dale Lux as well as Alice’s parents and siblings.

Debbie was born on December 17th, 1954, to Marion “LaVerne” and Josephine “Jody” (Tollman) McCoy in Sidney, NE. Residing in Crawford most of her childhood, she went to Glenn Country School. She trusted in Jesus for her salvation at Vacation Bible School in 1963. She attended Crawford Public Schools, graduating as Valedictorian with the class of 1973. She attended Western Nebraska Community College, graduating as an RN in 1976 before attending both Multnomah Bible School and New Tribes Bible Institute.

Debbie grew up on the ranch that her family owned. She loved riding horses every chance she could get. She counseled at a wilderness horsemanship camp in Washington, and was inspired to start her own when she returned to her family’s ranch in Crawford. She ran this camp for several years. In the winter of 1981, she met her husband, Herb, with whom she ministered at both Rodeo Bible Camps and horsemanship camps. They were married on October 23rd, 1982. They had 3 children: Shawn, Amy, and Chris.

Debbie and Herb helped put on Rodeo Bible Camp together with their church, Harrison Bible Church, for 25 years. Debbie worked as a nurse for many years at both the hospital and nursing home in Crawford. She stopped nursing to homeschool her kids, but later on spent many years working in home health care for neighbors and family. She was a faithful teacher of Sunday School and Kids Club at their church. Debbie was a loving wife and mother, and a big fan of both Bible study and spending time in God’s creation.

Debbie leaves behind her husband, Herb; son, Shawn (Ann) Fricke; daughter, Amy (Miles) Emard; son, Chris (Shelby) Fricke; grandsons, Tucker and Jackson Fricke; father, LaVerne; brother, Rodney (Joyce) McCoy; brother, Roger (Kathy) McCoy; brother, Roy (Chris) McCoy; brother, Edward (Shelley) McCoy; and stepbrother, Gerry Warren.

Bobby Felton, 39, passed away on May 10th, 2023 at his home in Chadron, Nebraska. He was born October 17th, 1983 in Salina, Kansas, the son of Mike Felton &amp; Vicki (Johnson) Farrington.

Bobby graduated from Gordon High School in 2002. Following graduation he attended Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He majored in Livestock Health &amp; Sciences and was a resident advisor. While in college, he participated on the rodeo team as a bareback rider and was employed both at a car dealership and the Terry Bison Ranch.

Bobby moved to Chadron in 2005, initially working a mail route. He was an incredibly hard worker, loved being outdoors, and gladly showed up whenever there was a need for a cowboy. In 2006, Bobby started his career as a self-employed fencing contractor at Felton Fencing.

Bobby was a guy who could warm your heart with his charming smile, had a great sense of humor, and was always good for a laugh. Bobby loved and respected his wife, Alicia, whom he met in January 2008 and married November 2012.

Bobby and Alicia enjoyed traveling to various cities to attend college bowl games (where they would dress as opposing fans), concerts and golfing. Bobby also found time to help friends with cattle and pursued a commercial garden project with Alicia.

Bobby was an entertainer at heart, whether that meant singing and jammin’ out with fellow musicians in downtown bars or fighting bulls in a nearby rodeo.

Bobby’s devotion to Alicia took on a whole new meaning when their bright-eyed son, Bennington Wells was born on January 29, 2022. Bobby was a dedicated father and husband. He was a humble, loving, unwavering reminder of the importance of home and our roots. He was one of those rare people who could be straight-forward, down-to-earth, and open-minded, but who was not afraid to ask tough questions or have an unpopular opinion. He was that guy you can stay up all night with, discussing music, sports, the meaning of life, and everything in between, which countless friends, family members, and acquaintances have done. He was simply as authentic and genuine as they come.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Claudine Johnson and paternal grandparents Bill and Doris Felton and Crystal and Gordy Edwards. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Alicia (Kruger) Felton, son, Bennington, sister Amy Felton and niece Rachel Doris, niece Evelyn Kruger, nephew Sam Kruger,&nbsp;grandfather, Robert Johnson and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and family members.

Memorial services will be held 10AM, Saturday, May 20th at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron.

William 'Bobby' Felton (1983 - 2023)

Kevin Daniel Lee, 35, of rural Elsie, NE, died May 10, 2023. Kevin was a graduate of the Perkins County Class of 2006. He attended Southeast Community College in Beatrice, where he graduated with an Associates Degree in Livestock Management in 2009. While at Southeast in Beatrice, Kevin met many lifelong friends with whom he stayed in contact over the years. Kevin quickly put his degree to work by returning back to the family farm South of Elsie. Kevin loved farming and livestock. He had an incredible passion for the land and loved working beside his Dad, grandfather, and great-uncles. Kevin was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Elsie and the Perkins County Fair Board. He worked many dances and events, as well as helping wherever he could during the Fair. Kevin loved horses, his herd of cattle, his purple semi, welding projects, sour patch kids, shorts, hunting, golfing, tinkering with things, and his friends. He was an incredibly responsible and hardworking individual. He was always willing to help anyone with any need. He took great pride in helping and working hard. Kevin was greeted in Heaven by his brother, Jared; grandma, Patsy Lee; and grandparents, Raymond and Carolyn Hazzard. Kevin will be forever missed by his parents, Daniel and Patti Lee of Elsie; sister, Courtney and brother-in-law Stetson of Gordon; Brothers, Tyler of Omaha and Adam of Casper, WY; Grandpa, Vince Lee of Elsie; Niece and Nephew, Tenley and Jensen of Gordon, as well as numerous Aunts, Uncles, cousins, friends, and neighbors. She was born June 6, 1964 in Hot Springs, SD to Ted &amp; Leona (Morgan) Dryden. She attended school &amp; graduated from Oelrichs High School in 1982. She attended Chadron State College and received an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Development. In June of 1986 she married Byron Eberle and lived in Edgemont, SD for several years.

She worked in Child Development Centers in both Edgemont and Hot Springs but after moving to Chadron Worked for years in Customer Service at Walmart.

Gail loved rocking babies, sunflowers, family, her cat companions Faith &amp; Hope and teaching kids.

Survivors include her son Daniel (Amber) Eberle and Paige, Bailey, Koye, KeLeigh; mother Leona Dryden, sister Ruth (Ken) Pourier and brother Dick (Rose) Dryden all of Oelrichs. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He played his guitar and sang in church for many years. He had a strong faith in his Lord and used his music in the Lord’s worship. He is survived by his three adopted sons Dean Ray, Dean Anthony, and David; and brother Robert (Charlotta) Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Jeannette in 2020.

Marjy M. Holmgren, 89, passed away unexpectedly, on Monday, January 16, 2023 at Box Butte General Hospital surrounded by loved ones.&nbsp;

Marjy was a treasure and she led her life from her heart. She was born June 27, 1933 in Crawford, Nebraska to Lillian B. (Pierce) and W.C. “Bud” Murphy.&nbsp;

Growing up south of Crawford, she attended Belmont school and later graduated from Crawford High School in 1950.&nbsp; She then continued her education in nursing and business&nbsp;

One of Marjy’s favorite memories was to have the honor of becoming the very first Crawford Rodeo Queen in 1949.

On January 10, 1953, Marjy and Jack Garner were married, and to this union, three daughters, Jackie, Ruthe, and Theresa were born. Together they moved to California, beginning their 21 years of service with the Air Force. Being a military wife required her to be flexible, resourceful and independent, adjusting to the varying lifestyles and cultures, yet allowing many experiences that came with living in California, Oklahoma, Japan, and Maryland. Regardless of their location, raising her daughters was her greatest joy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Following the dissolution of their marriage, Marjy worked in a variety of clerical positions between Alliance and Crawford, while being a devoted caregiver for her mother.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1998 she married Alan “Pat” Holmgren. She embraced ranch life and Pat’s family wholeheartedly. She became widowed in 2013.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Up to the time of her passing, Marjy resided in Alliance, taking great pride in her independence, her home, and her family. She was always young at heart, staying involved in the day-to-day lives of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and close friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To know Marjy was to feel at home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Marjy is survived by her daughters, Jackie (Kenneth) Lewis of Elizabeth, CO, Ruthe (Ron) Meter of Alliance, and Theresa (Alan) Hummel of Milliken, CO; her 7 grandchildren; Jennifer (William) Hood, Melissa (Reggie Brown) Lewis, Ryan (Melissa) Lewis, Katie (Ryan) Magwire, Kassie (Kevin) Jensen, Eryn (Connor Devore) Hummel, and Evan Hummel; 10 great-grandchildren, Kaylee (Hayden), Maizie, Nolyn, Fionna, Brodye, Kendrick, Kashton, Hadley, Jackson, and Hunter; her sister, Deljean Hilderbrand of Miles City, MT; and her sister-in-law, Terry Murphy of Emmett, ID, as well as many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Pat Holmgren, her brother, W.J. “Pat” Murphy, and her brother-in–law, Ralph Hilderbrand.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Memorial services will be held at a later date and announced at that time.&nbsp;

(Pierce) and W.C. “Bud” Murphy.&nbsp;Growing up south of Crawford, she attended Belmont school and later graduated from Crawford High School in 1950.&nbsp; She then continued her education in nursing and business&nbsp;One of Marjy’s favorite memories was to have the honor of becoming the very first Crawford Rodeo Queen in 1949.On January 10, 1953, Marjy and Jack Garner were married, and to this union, three daughters, Jackie, Ruthe, and Theresa were born. Together they moved to California, beginning their 21 years of service with the Air Force. Being a military wife required her to be flexible, resourceful and independent, adjusting to the varying lifestyles and cultures, yet allowing many experiences that came with living in California, Oklahoma, Japan, and Maryland. Regardless of their location, raising her daughters was her greatest joy.&nbsp;&nbsp;Following the dissolution of their marriage, Marjy worked in a variety of clerical positions between Alliance and Crawford, while being a devoted caregiver for her mother.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1998 she married Alan “Pat” Holmgren. She embraced ranch life and Pat’s family wholeheartedly. She became widowed in 2013.&nbsp;&nbsp;Up to the time of her passing, Marjy resided in Alliance, taking great pride in her independence, her home, and her family. She was always young at heart, staying involved in the day-to-day lives of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and close friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;To know Marjy was to feel at home.&nbsp;&nbsp;Marjy is survived by her daughters, Jackie (Kenneth) Lewis of Elizabeth, CO, Ruthe (Ron) Meter of Alliance, and Theresa (Alan) Hummel of Milliken, CO; her 7 grandchildren; Jennifer (William) Hood, Melissa (Reggie Brown) Lewis, Ryan (Melissa) Lewis, Katie (Ryan) Magwire, Kassie (Kevin) Jensen, Eryn (Connor Devore) Hummel, and Evan Hummel; 10 great-grandchildren, Kaylee (Hayden), Maizie, Nolyn, Fionna, Brodye, Kendrick, Kashton, Hadley, Jackson, and Hunter; her sister, Deljean Hilderbrand of Miles City, MT; and her sister-in-law, Terry Murphy of Emmett, ID, as well as many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Pat Holmgren, her brother, W.J. “Pat” Murphy, and her brother-in–law, Ralph Hilderbrand.&nbsp;&nbsp;Memorial services will be held at a later date and announced at that time.&nbsp;Memorials in Marjy’s name may be given to the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department or the Alliance Library.&nbsp;

Marvin R Loyd, 76 of Gering, Nebraska passed away Friday, May 5, 2023 at Regional West Medical Center.

Marvin was born January 14, 1947 to Evertt and Dora Loyd in Oshkosh, Nebraska. He graduated from Minatare High School. He entered the US Army during Vietnam and was honorably discharged. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad for over 30 years.

He married Judy on July 29, 1994 and made their home in Gering, Nebraska.

He was a member of Calvary Memorial Church. Marvin enjoyed taking care of his yard, gardening and helping his neighbors.

Survivors include his wife Judy Loyd; children Jenene and Brian Loyd of Denver, Matthew (Jennifer) Chrisman of Mitchell, Elisabeth (Tyler) Woods of Lincoln, Kathy (Josh) Frush of Des Moines; 6 grandchildren; brother, Richard (Cheryl) Loyd of Scottsbluff; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Evertt and Dora Loyd; wife, Ellen Loyd; infant son, Michael; and sisters, Mary, Carrie, and their spouses.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 11, at 9:30am, with Pastor Gary Hashley officiating at West Lawn Cemetery with military honors. At his request, cremation has taken place. A memorial has been established to Calvary Memorial Church. In May of 2015, Trish re-married the love of her life, Brad Hall, in a beautiful back yard ceremony at their home. Together, they continued to grow their love for horses and the western way of life, participating in events from ranch rodeos to barrel racing. Trish and Brad gained new titles as “Grammy and Peepaw” when they welcomed their grandson, Brant Charles in 2021 a followed by their granddaughter, Reece Kennedy in 2023. Joe Blanco Sr born in 1923 in Craig CA to Heraldo Blanco and Andrea Rojas Blanco. In 1930 they migrated to Nebraska as his dad passed away when he was between ages 6 and 7. His Mother had 9 kids. They lived on the farm and worked as crop workers on the farm. They did hard labor, harvesting all done by hand, part of what made him so tough, hang tuff as they called him. He started going to school at about 7 years old and then at, 10 his parents pulled him out to work in the fields. In 1942 he was drafted and served ETO in 1943-45. After only 6 months of training he was sent overseas.&nbsp; In 1943 he wound up in Great Plains, MN and was trained for invasion of France for 6 months then shipped out to Europe and ended up in England doing more training for invasion of France.

 When the invasion started he served pushing the enemies back until June of 1944 and liberated all of&nbsp;France and before that they kept pushing the enemy back to Ryan River into Germany. He fought on the beaches of Normandy during this time as well. Joe served in the United States Army for 4 years as a Military Police. Joe was discharged on the anniversary of WWII, December 7, 1945, to come home to the states because they defeated Germany-, he returned to Fort Leavenworth Kansas.

He was awarded an ETO Ribbon, won 5 major battle stars, a Defense Ribbon, US Service Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal, a Victory Ribbon for Occupation and an&nbsp;Enemy Clip for Germany Occupation with a&nbsp;Germany Clip

He was head of household at 19 where Joe supported his mother and siblings.

During WWII he would send money when he wrote home to help provide for school for the children, and sent allowance home. Then Joe worked in construction, the sugar factory, and working for Lockwood's too. He then started roofing, he roofed for Vaughn Peters until Vaughn passed away&nbsp;then he worked for Weathercraft. After roofing for many many years, he&nbsp;retired in his 80s and he really felt good all through his career working. When he retired everything caught up to him, especially his PTSD. Joe couldn't get used to not working. These are Mr. Joe Blanco's words. 

He led a beautiful wonder filled life in 99 years and has many loving children and lived a loving life with his wife Rose. He was very proud of his kids and grandkids and great grandkids. He loved his sports and taught himself to read and read the Star Herald Newspaper daily. He loved his Las Vegas Raiders as well.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife Rosemarie, son Virgil Smyres (Michele Litke) daughter Jessica (Travis) Turner, daughter Tonia (Mark) Buss, daughter Sandy Blanco-Anderson (Greg), Debora Blanco, Rita Blanco, Micheal Joseph (Crystal) Vaughn, Kimberly (Bill) Snyder, Lupe (Keith) Saathoff, 25 grandkids, 28 great grandkids and 5 great great grandkids and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by siblings Jerry Blanco, Cruz Blanco, Honda Deollas, Salome Blanco, Merced Blanco, Lupe Blanco. Children Richard Blanco, Jolene K Blanco, Joe Blanco Jr.&nbsp;

Viola (Vi) Adeline (Larsen) Stanec, 95, passed away Monday, May 8, 2023, at the Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, NE. She was born June 17, 1927, in New Underwood, SD to Alvin &amp; Carrie Larsen, being the first of ten children.

She attended grade school at Farmingdale, SD &amp; graduated from Rapid City High School in 1945. During her high school years, she worked for her room &amp; board at several residences. She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City, SD in 1943. After graduation from high school, she was employed by the Ration &amp; Rent Office.

Vi was united in marriage to Frank Stanec of Martin, SD on June 17, 1946. Their first home was on a farm 9 miles west of Martin. She helped with farm chores, raised large numbers of pullet chickens for butchering, and was a 4-H leader for a number of years. Four children were born to this union: Cary Jo, Diana, Maria &amp; Steve. Maria was born 2 months prematurely and passed away 12 hours after her birth.

Vi was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School and playing the organ for many years. She was also a member of the American Legion Unit Auxiliary #240 for many years. Her hobbies included gardening, both flowers and vegetables, sewing, crocheting &amp; quilt making.

Vi and Frank sold their farm and moved to Martin in 1967 and started a wheel alignment and brake service business. In 1978 Vi became a childcare provider for many of the children in and around Martin. She discontinued that shortly before moving to Rapid City, SD in 2009.

She is survived by two daughters, Cary (Ron) Sherman of Ashland, MO and Diana (Craig) Kratovil of Rapid City, SD and one son, Steve of Alliance, NE, four granddaughters, Tonya Kratovil of Oahu, HI, Crystal (Bill) Moffitt of Rapid City, SD, Wendy (Cliff) Faulker of Ashland, MO, and Catina Farahani of Salt Lake City, UT, two grandsons, Scott (Karin) Sherman of Santa Rosa, CA and Rich (Tara)Stanec of Alliance, NE, 12 great-grandchildren, 3 great great-grandchildren, 1 brother, Les Larsen (Linda) of Bismarck, ND and 1 sister, Nela Napoli of Rapid City, SD.

Vi was preceded in death by her husband Frank, her daughter Maria, parents Alvin &amp; Carrie Larsen, bothers Rollo, Walter, Willard, William &amp; Verlyn, 2 sisters Wilma Winston &amp; DeElda Kursave.

Kaitlin “Kaitie” R. Leising, age 29, of New Richmond, WI, died unexpectedly and tragically on May 6, 2023 while in the line of duty.

Kaitie (lovingly nicknamed Bug) was born on January 10, 1994 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Roger and Kristine (Hansen) Stevens. She graduated in 2012 from Chadron High School, and then went on to Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree and played golf. From a young age, Kaitie knew she wanted to go into law enforcement. She had such a love for people, especially children, who always seemed to gravitate towards her. She was always willing and eager to help others around her, even taking a special interest as a teenager to her peers that were less fortunate than her. On October 7, 2017, she was united in marriage to her best friend, Courtney Leising, and the two were blessed with their son, Syler in early 2023.

Leising, age 29, of New Richmond, WI, died unexpectedly and tragically on May 6, 2023 while in the line of duty.Kaitie (lovingly nicknamed Bug) was born on January 10, 1994 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Roger and Kristine (Hansen) Stevens. She graduated in 2012 from Chadron High School, and then went on to Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree and played golf. From a young age, Kaitie knew she wanted to go into law enforcement. She had such a love for people, especially children, who always seemed to gravitate towards her. She was always willing and eager to help others around her, even taking a special interest as a teenager to her peers that were less fortunate than her. She relished in time spent on all things Harry Potter, watching crime shows, and cheering on the Denver Broncos (despite it putting strain on her marriage with her Packer-loving wife!). Above everything, her greatest passion was her family – spending time with her wife, Courtney, and her son Syler, who was her everything. She had an amazing sparkle for life, always making others around her smile and laugh. Her humor was infectious, her laugh contagious, and her loyalty for those she loved most unwavering and steadfast.
