Lester&nbsp;James&nbsp;Thayer,&nbsp;78, of&nbsp;Merriman,&nbsp;Nebraska, passed away on&nbsp;November 4, 2020 after a short illness.

He&nbsp;was born to parents&nbsp;James Eli Thayer&nbsp;and&nbsp;Maude Mae Swick, on&nbsp;August 19, 1942&nbsp;in&nbsp;Newport,&nbsp;Nebraska, the fifth of six children.

Lester&nbsp;married Verla Clausen on&nbsp;April 17, 1961&nbsp;in&nbsp;Rushville, NE.&nbsp;To this union six children were born:&nbsp;Verlene, Verna, LeAnn, Leslie, Cassie, and Malena.&nbsp; For the majority of their marriage they lived in Merriman where Lester worked for the Cherry County Road Department before retiring early to take care of his wife when she became ill.&nbsp; After the passing of his wife he spent his time traveling to spend time with his children and grandchildren, always making sure to not miss a birthday or anniversary.&nbsp; If not attending grandchildren’s events he could be found playing cards or games with his sisters and their spouses. Survivors include his children, Verlene (Mark) Zacher, Les (Jannette) Thayer, and Cassie (Jerry) Schweigerdt, all of Rapid City, S.D., LeAnn (Mike) Hinton of Indianapolis, Ind., and Malena (Scott) Richardson of Chadron; his grandchildren, Tony (Amanda) Zacher, Jessica Zacher, Randee Thayer and Jordyn(Eric) Beebe, all of Rapid City, Andrew Tuggle of Fort Wayne, Ind., Tyler and Bryce Hinton of Indianapolis, Brayden, Dayton and Kinley Richardson, all of Chadron and Derek Larson of Texas; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ann Hale (Gailund Valentine), Lila (Leo) Nelson and Karen Holeman and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Verla, infant daughter Verna, parents Jim and Maude and two brothers Fred and LaVerne.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. November 15, 2020 at the Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home in Gordon.&nbsp; Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, November 16, at the Merriman Dance Hall with Brett Burress officiating. Burial will follow at the Merriman Cemetery.

Lester James Thayer (1942 - 2020)

Sister Regina Boyle, 90, passed away Friday, November 6, 2020 at Marian Residence in Alliance, NE.

She was born December 29, 1929 in O’Neill, NE to Charles and Alice (Barrett) Boyle and was named Alice Catherine.

She entered the Sisters of St. Frances of Penance and Christian Charity at Marycrest Convent in Denver, CO on September 8, 1953 and took her temporary vows on August 15, 1956 and professed her Perpetual Vows on August 15, 1959 and took the name of Sr. Mary Regina.&nbsp; She received her bachelor’s degree from Regis University in 1952.

Sister Regina followed the Lord’s call to the Sisters of St. Francis in 1953.&nbsp; Three years of novitiate training introduced her to the ways of Religious Life. On August 15, 1956 she professed her vows and took the name of Sister Mary Regina.

She came to teach at St. Agnes Academy in 1956 and a year at St. Francis Mission, SD before returning to Denver in 1961.&nbsp; She would further her education and continue teaching at Marycrest High School in Denver.&nbsp; Sr. Regina would continue in her ministry in a variety of ways in teaching art and local ministering until 2014.&nbsp; She then retired and became a resident of Marian Residence in Alliance.

She is survived by her sisters, Rita (Ken) Grosse, Mary Ellen Klinetrobe, Theresa Parks, Frances (Lyle) Gillogly, Helen (Dennis) Cunningham and Bridget (Joe) Ramold, along with numerous nieces and nephews and her Franciscan family.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Rosalie Crawford, Delores Schneider, Charlene Gaughenbaugh and an infant sister, Cecilia.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions a private Mass of Christian Burial will be at Marian Chapel in Alliance on Friday, November 13, 2020 with Father Tim Stoner officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in the O’Neill Cemetery, O’Neill, &nbsp;Nebraska.

Memorials are suggested for the St Agnes Foundation, 1104 Cheyenne Avenue, Alliance, NE&nbsp; 69301 for the adopt a student&nbsp; fund in care of Edna Broad.

Arvelyn Ruth Suiter passed away Sunday, November 8 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, NE due to complications from Covid 19.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 14 at the Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance with burial in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp; The family requests masks be worn to the service.

Memorials may be given to the animal support group PAWS or to the donor’s choice and may be sent to the family at 1041 Duncan Avenue.

Ruth was born September 30, 1939 on the family farm/ranch east of Martin, SD to Irvin (Bud) and Edna Pearl Ladely.&nbsp; She attended Suhre Country School and Martin Public Schools.

She was united in marriage to Darrel Lambert on February 10, 1957.&nbsp; They welcomed three children into their family; Russel, Annora and Kurt.

She was later married to Arthur Suiter on June 17, 1978 and made her home in Alliance.

Ruth was a people person and always said that strangers were just friends she hadn’t met yet.&nbsp; Over the years she chose several jobs that enabled her to meet a wide variety of people which she loved.&nbsp; She was the “Chief Cook and Bottlewasher” at her own cafe in Whitney, NE; waitress at both Chuckwagon and Helen’s Restaurant in Chadron and the Drake Hotel in Alliance; and Regional Tupperware Recruiter/Manager of the Rhythm Wrangler group which earned her several trips and an official Tupperware station wagon.&nbsp; In Alliance she worked at Shop &amp; Save and BF Food Pride grocery stores as a checker.&nbsp; She taught many young people that bagged groceries for her that there were two ways to do it: the Ruth way or the wrong way!

She was fiercely independent and determined to live life her own way.&nbsp; She never forgot a kindness which she always tried to repay, more often than not in homemade treats.&nbsp; Her fondness for cats and her&nbsp; unwillingness to see them go hungry is evidenced by a sign on her house that says “Feed them and they will come!” which allowed her to assist a local group in their efforts to trap, neuter and release feral cats.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children: Annora (Dana) Bentley, Kurt (Tracy) Lambert and her beloved granddaughters Regan and Kayel all of Alliance; her sisters Kay Christner of Sterling, CO and Eileen Kamerzell of Martin, SD and her brother Wayne Ladely of Sidney, NE.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son Russel, husband Arthur, sisters; Phyllis Daughters, Donna Westover, Norma Harris and brothers; James Ladely and Irvin Ladely.&nbsp; In death she will be united with her two grandchildren Philip and Ariane Bentley.&nbsp; She also leaves behind her beloved and faithful companions Max, Molly, Jet and Bear and her dear friend Ellen Lloyd.

God calls home Clara Irene (Weckwerth) Erixson, 83, of Crawford, NE, after a short fight with Covid-19 and other complications on Sunday, November 11, 2020.

Clara was born in Hot Springs, SD on August 12, 1937 to Walter and Mabel (Meier) Weckwerth. Clara lived with her railroad family in SD, WY and NE. After Clara graduated from Alliance High School in 1956, she enlisted in the Air Force where she cherished her time at Lackland, Chanute, and Lowry Air Force bases where she worked as a weather technician. Clara and Dick Erixson were married in the fall of 1958 and lived in Lincoln, NE. She was blessed with 6 children. She served as a den mother for scouting where she worked with many young children. She enjoyed needlepoint, cake decorating, she made porcelain dolls and repaired many dollies involved in accidents. She had a home for many dolls and over the years collected more than 2000. She was passionate about quilting and enjoyed this activity thru her last days. She is survived by her beloved husband Dick, sons John, Mike, and Jim and daughter Carolyn; and her sister Rita. She has 12 grandkids, 17 great grandkids. Clara is proceeded in death by her parents, brother Jim, and 2 sons, Theodore and Richard Jr.

&nbsp; Dorothy Jean (Dittenber) Kraft, 82 of Mitchell died Saturday, November 1, 2020 at UC Health Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, CO. Dorothy went home to be with her savior and her beloved husband, who she has desperately missed for the last seven years. A graveside service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 6, 2020 at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff, NE with Pastor Dale Brown officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the Federated Church in Mitchell, NE. Dorothy was born November 11, 1937 in Scottsbluff, NE to Henry and Elizabeth (Hartwig) Dittenber, the youngest of nine children. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mitchell, NE. Dorothy attended school in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1955 as class valedictorian; an accomplishment she was very proud of. On November 15, 1959; Dorothy married Robert Kraft and some years later had one daughter, Trisha. Dorothy and Bob were happily married for 53 years. Dorothy was a dedicated employee at Pinnacle Bank in Mitchell for over 30 years. She was a member of the Federated Church and acted as church treasurer for many years. Dorothy enjoyed baking and was especially known for her blackberry pies. Dorothy loved spending time with her two granddaughters and attending all of their activities when she was able. Dorothy loved baking with her granddaughters and providing them with their favorite sweet treats. The handwritten recipes of love she has passed down will be treasured by her daughter and granddaughters. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Trisha Foote; son-in-law Ryan Foote and two beloved granddaughters Emma Elizabeth Foote and Ella Ryan Foote. Dorothy is also survived by three cherished sisters Esther Green, Helen Foos, and Lydia Reichert as well as many special nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Robert; parents and parents-in-law; sisters Amelia Huber, Clara (Henry) Schuldies, Katherine (Clarence) Buxman, Marie (Elmer) Stahla and brother Rhine (Leah) Dittenber; brothers-in-law Ruben Green, Harold Foos and Alex Reichert. She is also preceded in death by her dear family of in-laws who made many memories at family picnics and get togethers Kate (William) Popp, Mary Kraft, Fred (Freda) Kraft, Pauline (Harold) Wamsley, Lydia (Henry) Schwartzkopf, Mike (Violet) Kraft, Ruth (Bill) Meyers, and Betty (Willard) Schmer. Dorothy Jean (Dittenber) Kraft (1937 - 2020)

&nbsp;Chester Roy Dye passed from this earth to his new home in heaven on Saturday October 24, 2020. A memorial service will be held on November 8, 2020 at 1:00 pm at Spring Creek Church in Mitchell. Chester had a passion for team roping and although he hadn’t competed in several years one of his favorite things was to talk about team roping and the changes that were taking place. He is survived by daughters, Karina (Marty) Jones of Burwyn,NE, Trista (Cory) Rose of Hobart, OK and Brianna Dye of Andrews, TX. Grandchildren, Mahaya, Maysa, and Makamry Jones, Lakyn, Taylyn and Brycen Rose. Brothers Bart and Jack. Also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins. Josefa “Josie” Lopez, 61, passed away Monday, November 2, 2020 at Box Butte General Hospital.

She was born in Yakima County, Washington to Dionicio and Maria D. (Lopez) Garza.

She married Adolfo Lopez on December 11, 1977 in Ramones County, N.L., Mexico.

Josie was a beautiful soul.&nbsp; She faced many obstacles in life, but remained strong through it all.&nbsp; She loved spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren.&nbsp; She loved joking around and laughing.&nbsp; She also enjoyed listening to music and cruising through the town.&nbsp; She always cared for others and was a very selfless person.&nbsp; She was known for having a sweet tooth and a love for Dr. Pepper.&nbsp; Josie was a tough woman with a very warm and loving heart.&nbsp; Although she left many heartbroken, she was reunited with her beloved mother and daughter in heaven.&nbsp; Though she is gone, she’ll never be forgotten and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Adolfo Lopez, Sr. of Alliance; her children, Demetrio “Tito” (Sulamit) Lopez, Josefa “Josie” (Jose) Garza, Adolfo “Junior” (Lucero) Lopez, Belinda Lopez, Emmanuel (Renae) Lopez, Dionicia “Denise” (Raul) Gomez, and Maruka Lopez, all of Alliance; and 19 grandchildren.&nbsp; She is also survived by her father, Rev. Dionicio Garza of Nuevo-Leon, Mexico; her brother, Rev. Dionicio (Esther) Garza, Jr. of Roma, TX.; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her mother, her daughter, Maria Lopez, and her step-mother, Maruca Garza.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 6, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Templo Nuevo Amanecer Church.&nbsp; Reverend’s Dionicio Garza, Sr. and Dionicio Garza, Jr. will officiate.&nbsp; A prayer service and visitation with family present will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, November 5, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Pastor Adolfo Reynaga will officiate.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Josefa “Josie” Lopez (1959 - 2020)

Larry Leider, 71, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2020 at his home in Alliance surrounded by his family.

Larry, “Grandpy,” Alvin Leider was born July 29, 1949 in Alliance, NE to Jake and June (Boyles) Leider. The oldest, and by most accounts orneriest, of 5 children would later move to Scottsbluff, NE where he graduated high school. In high school he was active in 4-H and horse shows. He had a horse named Frosty whom he would describe was “as wild as he.” After high school, Larry was drafted into the Army and was later stationed at West Point and then Vietnam. Life back home included attending WNCC where he received additional training and graduated with a degree in auto mechanics and auto body, a skillset that he was familiar with from his childhood. His final career move would be serving as a railcar mechanic at SWEPCO, later AEP, for 40 years. After his retirement on October 15, 2019, he proudly served as the official-unofficial foreman on his son’s house project. He was always going above and beyond everyone’s expectations.

Larry married his wife of 38 years, Nancy, and had four children Annie Peterson, Alice (Tuck) Fillingham, Amber (Chris) Cummings, and Andy (Amanda) Leider.

All who know Larry know that he had never met a stranger. He was one of the good guys who would go out of his way to do anything for anyone and if he couldn’t do it himself he would find someone who could. He was an avid collector, a food connoisseur (especially appetizers), a conversationalist, a wood carver, an ever-present hand at brandings, a regular presence at coffee time, an auction enthusiast, an expert furniture mover, and an all-around great man. Renowned for his tinkering abilities by his children, he enjoyed making things run another time around (current household dryer is still working after 37 years). Never more than a phone call away and no matter how far away you lived from him, you could count on him to run up and fix whatever needed repair - and of course be treated to dinner.

Grandpy to the late Kaylynn Peterson; Mollie and Harper Peterson, Fletcher and Griffin Fillingham, and Elsie Cummings, and grand-puppies Thor and Loki. This was a role he was so very well suited for; always bringing special treats, giving footsies, and never missing an event. A commendable servant to his country, an excellent role model for humanity, a good friend, and a wonderful father and grandfather to his family. He lived a life well-loved.

Larry is preceded in death by his father and his sister Teresa Leider. He is survived by his wife and children, brother Jake (Ronna) Leider, sisters Sandra Janes and Cindy (Larry) Taylor, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Larry was welcomed into heaven on November 1, 2020. We will forever cherish his carefree spirit and ever-present smile. He carved such a beautiful life for all who knew him.

Larry was devoted to Alliance and the panhandle of Nebraska. In this spirit, memorials are welcomed to be directed to Alliance Pillars in the Park, “Festival of Hope,” or a cause of your choosing.

Funeral services will be Thursday, November 5, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel with Reverend Cheryl Harris officiating.&nbsp; Burial with military honors will be in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-7 p.m., with the family being present from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Evan Gaige Allen-Mader, 20, died Monday, October 26, 2020 at Ascension 
Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born March 
6, 2000 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Freeman Allen, Jr. and Jessica (Mader)
 Allen. 
 Evan lived most of his life in Garden City where he attended 
school. His Junior year of high school, Evan attended school in Caney, 
Kansas. He then attended his senior year and graduated from Ogallala 
High School in Ogallala, Nebraska in 2019. Evan then attended Chadron 
State College in Chadron, Nebraska and Cowley County Community College 
each for 1 year. Evan also worked as a package handler for Fedex while 
helping father at ICT Tree &amp; Landscaping. Evan was an avid sports 
fan and loved participating in all sports, but his main passion was 
playing basketball. He also loved dancing, music, making people laugh, 
and spending time with his family and friends. 
 Survivors include his mother Jessica &amp; husband Ray Hull of 
Lee’s Summit, Missouri; his father Freeman &amp; wife McKenzie Allen, 
Jr. of Wichita, Kansas; two brothers Zayden Allen of Lee’s Summit, 
Missouri and Trindon Allen of Wichita, Kansas; a sister Rylie Allen of 
Lee’s Summit, Missouri; grandparents Tom &amp; Lori Herrell of Garden 
City, Kansas, Freeman Allen, Sr. of Columbus, Mississippi, and Angela

Sheryl Lee Roberts, 67, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at her home in Alliance.

She was born in Alliance on September 30, 1953 to Alva Edward and Cleo Clona (Hiner) Roberts.&nbsp;

Sheryl was a graduate of Hemingford High School.&nbsp; She then attended and graduated from Chadron State College with a degree in Psychology and Sociology.&nbsp; After working in those fields she became the Librarian for the Hemingford Public Library.&nbsp; She served in that position until ill health forced her early retirement.

She is survived by her sister, Phyllis Edmunds of Bayard and her brother, Darroll Roberts of Chadron.&nbsp;

Her parents and her brother, Alva Roberts preceded her in death.

Memorial services will be Friday, November 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford.&nbsp; Pastor Esther Achi will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Hemingford Cemetery.

Sheryl Lee Roberts (1953 - 2020)

Gabriel (Gabe) James Blanford, 17, of Chadron, Ne, was freed of his earthly burdens after a life long battle with Trichothiodystrophy (TTD). Gabe was born August 2, 2003 in Denver, Co to Angie Flesner and Jason Blanford, and passed in the comfort of his home surrounded by family in the early morning of October 23, 2020.&nbsp;

Although TTD stripped him of many things, it did not strip his spirit for life. He enjoyed meeting new people and he was able to capture the heart of anyone who came in contact with him. He loved music, especially Dirty Paws by Of Monsters And Men, giving out fist bumps and hugs. Some of his favorite places to be were in the mountains of Wyoming, any river or body of water he could throw rocks into, and his backyard. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and golf. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family.&nbsp;

In 2010, he was granted a wish by the Make A Wish Foundation of Nebraska to swim with the Dolphins at Discovery Cove in Florida. After he was diagnosed with TTD, he got to venture across the United States twice to Bethesda, MD where he and his family took part in the study of his 1 in a million disorder at the National Institutes of Health. The second trip to Maryland was extended, in thanks to so many supporters and donors, so he could travel to NYC and see the Statue of Liberty. Over the years, Gabe and his family made countless trips to Minneapolis, MN for advice, surgeries, and mobile equipment from the Shriners Hospital for Children. Although the majority of his travels were based around medical appointments, his family always found something new and fun to do wherever they were.&nbsp;

He was a member of the Chadron State College men’s basketball team, he had been an honorary captain for the CSC football team, and he was highly involved in bringing smiles to the students and staff within the Chadron Public Schools. Gabe is known far and wide throughout the community, and many people knew his smiling face from the years he spent doing physical and occupational therapies at the Chadron Hospital.&nbsp;

Gabe was rejoined with his baby brother, Owen Robbins, grandfather Terry Flesner, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, and countless TTD brothers and sisters.  </figure>Gabriel (Gabe) James Blanford, 17, of Chadron, Ne, was freed of his earthly burdens after a life long battle with Trichothiodystrophy (TTD). Gabe was born August 2, 2003 in Denver, Co to Angie Flesner and Jason Blanford, and passed in the comfort of his home surrounded by family in the early morning of October 23, 2020.&nbsp;Although TTD stripped him of many things, it did not strip his spirit for life. He enjoyed meeting new people and he was able to capture the heart of anyone who came in contact with him. He loved music, especially Dirty Paws by Of Monsters And Men, giving out fist bumps and hugs. Some of his favorite places to be were in the mountains of Wyoming, any river or body of water he could throw rocks into, and his backyard. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and golf. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family.&nbsp;In 2010, he was granted a wish by the Make A Wish Foundation of Nebraska to swim with the Dolphins at Discovery Cove in Florida. After he was diagnosed with TTD, he got to venture across the United States twice to Bethesda, MD where he and his family took part in the study of his 1 in a million disorder at the National Institutes of Health. The second trip to Maryland was extended, in thanks to so many supporters and donors, so he could travel to NYC and see the Statue of Liberty. Over the years, Gabe and his family made countless trips to Minneapolis, MN for advice, surgeries, and mobile equipment from the Shriners Hospital for Children. Although the majority of his travels were based around medical appointments, his family always found something new and fun to do wherever they were.&nbsp;He was a member of the Chadron State College men’s basketball team, he had been an honorary captain for the CSC football team, and he was highly involved in bringing smiles to the students and staff within the Chadron Public Schools. Gabe is known far and wide throughout the community, and many people knew his smiling face from the years he spent doing physical and occupational therapies at the Chadron Hospital.&nbsp;Gabe was rejoined with his baby brother, Owen Robbins, grandfather Terry Flesner, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, and countless TTD brothers and sisters. Gene J. Schoeneman, 82, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance.

He was born November 13, 1937 in Bayard, Nebraska to Henry and Eva (Asmus) Schoeneman.

He was united in marriage to Marilyn M. Schnell on October 4, 1959 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alliance.

Gene loved the land and farmed for 41 years until his semi-retirement in 2007.&nbsp; He and Marilyn enjoyed traveling to other states, spending time with his kids and grandkids and helping out on the farm when needed.&nbsp; Gene also enjoyed watching football and listening to gospel music.

Gene served on the Board of Directors for Westco for 2 terms, served on the Dist. 42 School Board and was a member of the Evangelical Free Church.&nbsp; In 2007 Gene and his family were recipients of the Alliance Chamber of Commerce Farmer/Rancher Family of the Year and he also achieved top 10 grower recognition awards from Western Sugar.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his children, Keith (Teresa) Schoeneman and Scott (Cindy) Schoeneman of Alliance and Janet (Craig) Workman of Lincoln, his grandchildren, Sarah Bannan and Trent (Gina) Bannan, Rachel Schoeneman, Anna Schoeneman, Seth Schoeneman, Renata Schoeneman, Evan Schoeneman, Miranda Workman, Makenzie Workman and Grant Workman, and his great-grandchildren, Ross Boyd, Reed Boyd and Mia Bannan.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brother, John (Pam) Schoeneman of Wisconsin and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Lynn Bannan and his siblings Hank (Viola) Schoeneman, Irene (Albert) Pfenning, Christina (Dave) Martin, Sarah (Leslie) Gabel, Martha (Raymond) Gabel and Mary (Ed) Vogel.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 28 at 10:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Art Smith officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be Tuesday from 1-7 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home with family present from 5-7 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp; The family requests attendees wear masks inside the church.

Memorials may be given to the Highland Park Care Center Alzheimer’s Unit or the Evangelical Free Church.&nbsp;&nbsp; Gene’s family would also like to extend a tremendous thank you to the Highland Park Alzheimer’s Care Unit for their exceptional care and loving support.

&nbsp; Richard “Dick” L Hoffman, Sr, 80 of Scottsbluff, Nebraska passed away at his home October 13, 2020. A Celebration of Life services will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the American Legion in Gering from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Military honors provided by American Legion Post #36. Dick was born on July 19, 1940 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Rueben and Dorothea (Watters) Hoffman. Moving to Lincoln to live with family, while his father was overseas during the Pacific Theater. When his father returned after the war they moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The family later returned to western Nebraska. While attending Scottsbluff High School, he was active in sports and other school activities. After graduating from high school, he attended a 2 year Junior College in Scottsbluff. There was an old WWII submarine Veteran living in town and he spoke with him about Submarines, he got his curiosity about them and a couple of days later, and he entered the United States Navy October of 1963. He chose the Nuclear Submarine Service. He mainly operated in the South China Sea, Tonkin Gulf, and Sea of Japan and all along the shores of the Soviet Union. After 7 years underwater he was honorably discharge January of 1970 with the rank of E-6 (IC-I (SS). He returned home to work cutting meat. He later purchased his father’s business, Union Bar in Gering, just a small neighborhood type bar. He married Jackie Wilcox in 1971 and a son Richard Jr. was born. He enjoyed sponsoring golf teams and bowling teams. He was past President of local Golf Association. He loved to walleye fish. Survivors include his granddaughter Taylor Hoffman, sister-in-law Ruth Hoffman, extended family and host of friends. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, ex-wife Jackie, son Rich and brother Robert Hoffman.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Shirley Mae (Gorr) Loose (1933 - 2020)

Paul D. Empson of Chadron, who served as a District Court judge in northwest Nebraska for nearly 27 years, died at his home early Sunday morning, October 18, 2020, with his wife and daughter nearby.&nbsp; He was 79. A memorial service will be Saturday, October 24, 2020&nbsp;at 2 p.m. at the Chadron Berean Church.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Chamberlain Chapel.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Empson was born September 21, 1941 at Concordia, Kansas, to Loran Ralph and Viola May (Boger) Empson.&nbsp; He was an all-around athlete in high school, graduating in 1959. He earned a degree in business from the University of Kansas in 1963.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While they were attending KU, Empson married Martha Ramsey of Wyandotte County, Kansas, on December 9, 1962 at the Danforth Chapel on campus. They were blessed with two children, Mark, who lives in Connecticut, and Laura of Chadron.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A year after receiving his bachelor’s degree, Empson enrolled at the University of Kansas Law School and graduated with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1967.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; As Empson was nearing graduation, Laurice Margheim, the Box Butte County attorney, sent a letter to the law school seeking applicants to become the deputy county attorney and a law partner.&nbsp; Empson was chosen to fill the positon.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After Gov. Charles Thone appointed Empson to become a 16th Judicial District judge beginning October 1, 1980, the family moved to Chadron.&nbsp; He filled that position until retiring June 30, 2007.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Shortly after arriving in Chadron, through the encouragement of Frank Van Campen, pastor of the Berean Church, Empson accepted Jesus Christ as his savior, changing his life forever for the better.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Always an avid reader, Empson studied the Bible thoroughly. He was a natural teacher, and, within a few years, he was leading Bible studies and teaching Sunday school classes at his church, which he did for a couple of decades.&nbsp; In addition, he was chairman of the church board many years.&nbsp; He and his wife joined Gideons International in 2011 and became staunch supporters of its efforts.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Empson had a strong personality and did everything with zeal and excellence. He was skilled in discernment and loved to help solve problems, offering guidance and assistance to those in need or with issues, including some who had come before him in court. He loved children, and being “Papa Paul” to friends’ children.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; His daughter noted that when he watched sports on television he nearly always rooted for the underdogs unless they were the Kansas Jayhawks. Other special pastimes included both big game and turkey hunting, target shooting, playing tennis and traveling with Martha by motorcycle from coast-to-coast. He loved his family and made sure they took many vacations together.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Besides his wife and two children, he is survived by a sister, Carole Blixt, and her husband, Lennie, of Chapman, Kan.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pastor Van Campen will return to conduct the memorial service.&nbsp; The nine children of Daryl and Stephanie Regier of Chadron will serve as honorary pallbearers.&nbsp; Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.&nbsp; Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Berean Church and Gideons International or donors choice.&nbsp;

Charles Thone appointed Empson to become a 16th Judicial District judge beginning October 1, 1980, the family moved to Chadron.&nbsp; He filled that position until retiring June 30, 2007.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Shortly after arriving in Chadron, through the encouragement of Frank Van Campen, pastor of the Berean Church, Empson accepted Jesus Christ as his savior, changing his life forever for the better.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Always an avid reader, Empson studied the Bible thoroughly. He was a natural teacher, and, within a few years, he was leading Bible studies and teaching Sunday school classes at his church, which he did for a couple of decades.&nbsp; In addition, he was chairman of the church board many years.&nbsp; He and his wife joined Gideons International in 2011 and became staunch supporters of its efforts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Empson had a strong personality and did everything with zeal and excellence. He was skilled in discernment and loved to help solve problems, offering guidance and assistance to those in need or with issues, including some who had come before him in court. He loved children, and being “Papa Paul” to friends’ children.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; His daughter noted that when he watched sports on television he nearly always rooted for the underdogs unless they were the Kansas Jayhawks. Other special pastimes included both big game and turkey hunting, target shooting, playing tennis and traveling with Martha by motorcycle from coast-to-coast. He loved his family and made sure they took many vacations together.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Besides his wife and two children, he is survived by a sister, Carole Blixt, and her husband, Lennie, of Chapman, Kan.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pastor Van Campen will return to conduct the memorial service.&nbsp; The nine children of Daryl and Stephanie Regier of Chadron will serve as honorary pallbearers.&nbsp; Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.&nbsp; Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements. James L. Fistler ,71, passed away Monday, October 12, 2020 at the home of his daughter in Alliance from an extended illness.

He was born December 28, 1948 in Keithsburg, Illinois to Kenneth and Helen (High) Fistler.

On February 12, 1979 he was united in marriage to Judie K. Von Tour.

He is survived by his wife, Judie, his children, Mark (Shonda) Sheets of Alliance, Jennifer (James) Monroe of Alliance and Rick (Michele) Hall of Minneapolis, MN, his grandchildren, Kayla Sheets, Madison Monroe, Mya Monroe, Mason Monroe and Zander Hall.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brother, Butch (Gerene) Fistler of Mason City, IA, his sister, Shirley Fistler of Manly, IA and his twin brother, John (Carole) of Hemingford and numerous nieces and nephews.

James Fistler (1948 - 2020)

John Howard Watson passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 10, 2020, surrounded by his wife and family. Howard was born on August 17, 1924, in Alliance, Nebraska. He was able to celebrate his 96th birthday in an outdoor celebration with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchild.

Howard is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Ann (Borcherding) Watson. They were married on October 17th, 1952 in Lincoln, Nebraska.&nbsp; They were married for nearly sixty-eight years.&nbsp; They had four children, Mark Howard Watson (Denise), Bruce Edward Watson (Anne), the late Paul Daniel Watson (Lori), and Janet Marie Smith (Dr. Samuel Smith).&nbsp; They were blessed with twelve grandchildren, Jacob Daniel Watson (Jene),&nbsp; Hannah Jean Blumenthal (Ben), John Raymond Watson, Jess Edward Watson, Sara Mary Cummings (Cory), Amy Leigh Kulas (Tyler), Nathaniel Howard Smith (Jenny), Rebecca Mary Smith, Eric Benjamin Smith, Tyler Edward Smith (Alanna), Ryan Daniel Smith, and Julia Ann Smith.&nbsp; Howard and Shirley were also blessed with four great grandchildren, Jasper, Brock, and Evie Smith and Levi Howard Blumenthal.&nbsp;

Howard was preceded in death by his son, Paul, his parents, John Daniel and Mary Patterson Watson, and his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Dale Barry.

Howard was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Force as a radio operator and tail gunner.&nbsp; The crew’s B-24 plane, Gidi Gidi Boom Boom, flew thirty nine missions out of Italy before being shot down over Romania.&nbsp; Howard and the crew of the Gidi Gidi Boom Boom were captured and held prisoner of war for three months in Bulgaria before being freed by the Russian Army.&nbsp; Howard was presented with the Purple Heart and a Quilt of Valor for his service to his country.

After returning home Howard began a lifelong career of farming with his father, John Daniel.&nbsp; The family farm was homesteaded in 1891 and continues to be operated by sons Mark and Bruce and grandson John.

Howard was a very active member of the community.&nbsp; He served on the Box Butte County Wheat Board, was a member and Deacon of the Presbyterian Church, served on the Box Butte County ASCS committee, served for many years as a Military Honor Guard, and was a member of the Elks, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles, and Lions Clubs.

Howard was a lifelong sports fan of the Alliance Bulldogs and Nebraska Cornhuskers.&nbsp; He met Shirley on a blind date at a Husker football game.&nbsp; He convinced Shirley to drive from Salt Lake City, Utah to Alliance on the final day of their honeymoon to get back home in time for a Bulldog football game.&nbsp; Through the years, Howard and Shirley enjoyed their time together playing bridge with friends, golfing, square dancing, and traveling in their retirement years.

Howard enjoyed fishing and hunting.&nbsp; He was an avid golfer.&nbsp; Many fond family memories involved yearly vacations to Chadron State Park and Lake McConaughy. Most of all, Howard loved spending time with his beloved wife Shirley, his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.&nbsp; They will miss his kind and gentle nature and his keen sense of humor.&nbsp;

Howard showed us all how to live a life of humility, dignity, and service.&nbsp; His leadership and values were at the core of what author Tom Brokaw declared as “The Greatest Generation”.&nbsp; Howard showed us all the dedication and hard work required to raise a family, improve a community, and strengthen a nation.&nbsp; He was a role model to all who knew him and we were very blessed to have him in our lives.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 14th, at Bates-Gould Funeral Home from 1 to 7 p.m.&nbsp;

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 15th at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp; The family requests that attendees wear masks inside the church and practice social distancing.&nbsp; A private family burial will follow at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery.

John Howard Watson (1924 - 2020)

Alrene Pearl Schmitt, 82, of Mercedes, Texas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 7, 2020. She was born to parents Art and Pearl Wilder on July 31, 1938, in Edgemont, South Dakota.

Alrene met Marshall Rogers in 1954. They were married on February 6, 1955, in Kimball, Nebraska. Together they raised three children: Roy, Rod, and Randy. She spent most of her life in Nebraska, later moved to California, and finally, Texas, where she retired in 2007. Marshall proceeded her in death on January 31, 2003.

She married her best friend Bob Schmitt, November 11, 2008. Together they traveled all over the United States and visited several countries. They were proud members of the Cowboy Church of the Valley and enjoyed giving their time to Boarder Mission. She always believed in giving a hand up to those who needed one. She had a great circle of friends who met for coffee, played cards, and fellowship. One of her greatest joys was playing cards and board games with her family, where she always played to win.

She is survived by her husband Bob, sons Roy (Gwen), Rod (Audrey), Randy (Stephanie), stepsons Terry (Tina), Bobby (Karen), Brian (Kris) 21 grandchildren and their spouses, and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marshall, two sisters Joan and Jane and stepson Mike.

The family has entrusted McCaleb Funeral Home with the arrangements. A small graveside service will be held in Potter, Nebraska at a later time.

Alrene Pearl Rogers Schmitt (1938 - 2020)

Betty Ann (Martin) Grubbs, a blessed child of God was born on March 24, 1927 to Claude and Velma (Schiller) Martin in Sidney, NE and went to her heavenly home October 8, 2020 at the Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard, Nebraska.

She became a child of God through Holy Baptism on April 30, 1927 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sidney, NE.&nbsp; Continuing her spiritual growth she publicly confessed her faith on her Confirmation Day, May 19, 1950 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Scottsbluff, NE.

Betty married Dean D. Grubbs on June 13, 1954 and was blessed with two children, Travis S. (Susan) Grubbs of Gowanda, NY and Valarie K. Betty Ann (Martin) Grubbs (1927 - 2020)

Fox Maxwell went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 6, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. A memorial service will be held at Chuck Wagon Church on October 16, 2020 at 2pm, with Pastor Al Wilson officiating. Memorial donations can be made to Chuck Wagon Church.

He was born on February 23, 1951. His parents were Glenn and Phyllis Maxwell. He attended Scottsbluff schools until he joined the Navy in 1968. He was a Vietnam Veteran, Class of 69. Upon returning, he attended Brown Institute for radio broadcasting and was a licensed disc jockey. He worked for the sugar factory and many area farmers during harvest.

On July 4, 2008, he married Carol Crom “Soupy” in Alaska, where his friends Al and Sheila Warfield lived and gave them great memories.

He was an avid motorcycle rider. He rode over 50 years. He had a lot of biker friends and loved to ride with them. He enjoyed doing charitable events for children, but his ill health prevented him from attending some of the events. He was an avid fisher and enjoyed spending time with friends. He loved working in his shop and having BS sessions with his brothers.

Fox was a member of Chuck Wagon Church. He loved taking his great granddaughter, Jacelyn to Sunday school and listening to Pastor Al Wilson.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Crom “Soupy” of Scottsbluff and her son, Neil Blanton; son, Gerald (TAZ) and Becky Maxwell of Bellevue, Nebraska; daughter, Genya and Ryan Dietrich of Scottsbluff; step children, Uriah Furrow of Boulder, Colorado, Amanda Mogan of Severance, Colorado; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, biker brothers, and friends.

Graveside services for Sharon “Susie” Rose Jancik will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 1:30 PM at the Hay Springs City Cemetery in Hay Springs, Nebraska with Pastor Paul Smith officiating. Sharon “Susie” Rose Jancik was born to Helga Ingeborg (Ikey) Jensen and Clarence Robert Stiehl on March 14, 1937, in Hay Springs, Nebraska. Sharon graduated high school in 1955. Sharon was a BPO Doe and a member of the Eastern Star. She attended UNL for one semester and taught one year at a country school in Beaver Valley.

She married her high school sweetheart, Joseph Albert “Pete” Jancik, in 1957 and moved out to the family ranch north of Hay Springs. She loved helping Pine Tree (Pete) at their sawmill. Pete and Sharon had four children together: Traci (married to Bart Spracklen) Bates, Mike (married to Tricia Martin) Jancik, Clay (married to Kim Slavik) Jancik, and Brandi (married to Brock) Musgrave.

Sharon loved having family around as much as possible. She hosted many large get-togethers for brandings, Sunday meals, or any other occasions that would arise. She was a 4-H leader and teacher for many years being sure to include her kids and grandkids in the program.

Well-known by all, Sharon was very sociable, had tons of friends and loved going to social events. It was common to see her driving around town with her sidekick and best friend, Tudy Lintt. They were inseparable: they co-owned a cleaning and painting business and bowled together on a league. In her later years she could still be seen cruising the town or going to Prairie Winds with her good friends Wanda Maloney and Charlene Luneburg. She loved going to Sackers, scratching lottery tickets and having a pop.

Sharon was very crafty. She excelled at needlework, gardening, cooking, canning and sewing clothing for her kids and grandkids. Most evenings you would find her sitting at her computer reading emails and playing computer games. She was a loving grandmother/great grandmother who enjoyed sharing these gifts with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her older brother Dr. Gary Stiehl (married to Jane Burrows) and her sister-in-law Laura Scherbarth. Grandkids include Nathan Bates (married to Johanne Letendre), Megan Gilmore, Amanda Fanning (married to Carl Fanning), Andrea Lorraine (married to Joe Lorraine), Brandon Jancik (married to Melissa Alworth), James Taylor, Boone Jancik (married to Shalisa Whitman), Cydney Jancik, Wesley Jancik (married to Ashley Parks), Tim Jancik (married to Stephany Esparza), Andy Jancik, Chase Musgrave.

Great grandkids include Jonas, Lauren, and Ryan (children of Nathan Bates); Jailyn and Ember (children of Brandon Jancik); Aubrey, Skyler and Dakota (children of Boone Jancik); Aubrey, Andrew and Caleb (children of Amanda Fanning); EmMarie (children of Andrea Lorraine).

William David Monroe III, 34, passed away October 5, 2020 at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, CO.

He was born August 30, 1986 in Omaha, Nebraska.

He is survived by his father, William G. Monroe, Sr., his mother, Melinda Miller of Omaha, his children, Tiana Red Bear-Monroe, Nassim Monroe, William Monroe IV and Liberty Monroe all of Alliance.&nbsp; He is also survived by his sister, Jennifer (Keith) Eversull of Alliance, his brothers, Jason (Kara) Monroe of Hawaii and James (Jennifer) Monroe of Alliance, and his significant other, Regina Red Bear of Alliance.&nbsp;

He worked with his father in Monroe Flooring and was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his Renee Conica Monroe.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, October 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Indian Mission Church of God.&nbsp; Reverend Don Mink and Sister Linda Abold will officiate.&nbsp; Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

William David Monroe III (1986 - 2020)

Hugh Patrick Sughroue was born on January 25,&nbsp;1951 at St. Catherine's Hospital in McCook, NE&nbsp;to Kenneth James and Clara Ruth (Dutcher) Sughroue. He passed away on September 29, 2020 at his home in Hay Springs, NE. He was 69 years old.

Pat grew up in Holdrege, NE and graduated from Holdrege High School in 1969. He made many lifelong friends with whom he rode bikes, hunted and fished, and played baseball. His Grandma Esther Sughroue instilled in him a love of gardening that continued throughout his life. He took excellent care of his 4-H animals and participated in FFA.

Always an outdoorsman, Pat pursued jobs that let him be out in the elements. He cut timber in Wyoming for several years in the 1970s. He worked for his dad's company, Industrial Pipe Lines, pre-watering interstate highway construction areas in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Arizona, making sure that water flowed 24 hours a day 7 days a week at each job site. He worked on the family ranch for several years before returning to the University of Nebraska to complete his bachelor's degree in horticulture in 1988.

He was a pro at installing and fixing irrigation systems, building and rehabbing bunkers, growing new grass, and operating all the equipment required to keep his courses beautiful havens of peace and green for the golfers who played there - including Pat himself. He loved mentoring the young people who worked on courses with him and derived much satisfaction when they went on to careers in course management.Pat married Tomi Schneider Eirich in 1989, gaining his beloved daughter Sarah Elizabeth and welcoming daughter Erin Rebecka in 1992. Pat's girls accompanied him on several job moves before they settled in southwest Kansas to be closer to family in Nebraska. The Sughroues took family trips around the country, many involving camping and fishing and building great memories. One of Pat's greatest joys was helping Sarah and Erin with their 4-H animals.Pat married Sally Mann Jourdan on February 18, 2011. After Sally retired in 2012, she and Pat spent many happy months each year living in their little old 5th wheel. They spent the summers of 2012 and&nbsp;2013 in Boulder, WY&nbsp;while Pat was superintendent at Rendezvous Meadows Golf Course in Pinedale. Winters found them at Ancient Oaks RV Park in Rockport, TX where they enjoyed activities with the many friends who returned each year from across the US and Canada. Pat loved fishing from the pier at Goose Island State Park and the Port Aransas Jetty most, but also enjoyed some deep-sea fishing outings and some attempts at surf-fishing. He didn't mind cleaning fish and was always happy to share what he caught with others. He always said that being the guide was almost more fun than being the fisherman - he loved to share his knowledge and love of fishing and hunting with others and was always ready with the net to help another land a fish.The arrival of spring meant putting in a garden at home. Pat spent happy hours every day tending his plants. He taught Sally to can produce and he shared hundreds of pounds of vegetables every year with friends and with Sharing &amp; Caring Neighbors to be enjoyed by clients.Pat was never without a good Labrador or two. He loved by turn Jake, Jet, Jenny, Jack, Ginger and Jillie, and recently welcomed puppy Azra Rose. His dogs went with him to fishing spots and hunting camps throughout Pat's life. Watching his dogs run through plum thickets to flush pheasants and then retrieve them brought him great joy.Pat was a lifelong Husker fan and a huge baseball fan. He and Sally enjoyed trips to Denver to take in a couple or three Colorado Rockies games each summer. Most years they made a trip to Thermopolis, WY or Hot Sulphur Springs, CO to soak in the hot water, which was one of Pat's favorite things to do. He was an avid reader and always had a stack of library books at the ready. He looked forward to his annual deer hunting trips at KJ River Ranch, his mom's house - a tradition that he and longtime friend Al Hohlfeld kept up for decades. Pat kept the freezer full of venison and fish to enjoy throughout the year.Pat is survived by his wife, Sally, of Hay Springs; daughter Sarah of Spearville, KS; daughter Erin and her fiance Derick Hinch and granddaughter Quinn Laurel of Candor, NY; mother Ruth Sughroue of Indianola, NE; brother Mike and wife Gail Sughroue of Kearney, NE; brother Tim and wife Nance Sughroue of McCook, NE; sister Becky Nelson of Loomis, NE; sister Angie and husband Pat Ridings of Marietta, GA; and brother Dennis Sughroue of Indianola; nieces and nephews to whom he was sometimes "Uncle Grumpy"; great-nieces and nephews to whom he was "Fishin' Pat"; and aunts, uncles and cousins with whom he passed many happy days.Pat was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth, grandparents Clarence and Esther Sughroue and Austin and Minnie Dutcher, and niece Courtney Massoudi.A celebration of Pat's life well-lived will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 1:00 PM at the Indianola Community Hall.Pat's inclination was always to work locally.
