&nbsp; The Chadron State College football team will make its home debut Saturday, hosting the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers in the second of six games on the Eagles' schedule this fall.&nbsp; Kickoff at Elliott Field will be 5 p.m. The Chadron State-Mines rivalry dates back to 1912, the second year CSC was open.&nbsp; While the Eagles lead the series 50-18, three of the victories the last four years since the Hardrockers joined the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the rivalry was resumed have been highly entertaining donnybrooks.&nbsp; Those scores were 37-33 in 2016, 50-46 in 2018 and 53-48 last fall, when the 101 points were the second highest in a Chadron State regular season game, the lead changed hands eight times and the 1,052 combined total net yards were 12th in Eagles' history. CSC also won the 2017 game by a 29-17 margin. A year ago, the Hardrockers ran 103 plays from scrimmage, 40 more than CSC, but the Eagles racked up 573 total net yards as quarterback&nbsp;Dalton Holst&nbsp;threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns and tailback Elijah Miles rushed 28 times for 193 yards and two scores.&nbsp; Mines finished with 499 yards. Both teams opened their abbreviated 2020 schedules last Saturday. The Eagles' defense played well but their offense struggled during a 10-7 overtime setback at Colorado Mesa. The Hardrockers defeated their other arch-rival, Black Hills State, 34-17 in Rapid City. Confronted by a strong defensive front, the Chadron State had difficulty moving the ball against Mesa. The Eagles gained just 266 total net yards and didn't score until 25 seconds remained in regulation play. Lack of experience undoubtedly contributed to the struggle.&nbsp; Holst and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4233">Chad Mikelson</a>, the game's receiver with seven receptions for 82 yards, were the only CSC skill position players who had previously seen significant action.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; South Dakota Mines out-yarded the Black Hills 442 to 218 yards behind senior running back Ahmed Lewis, who carried 26 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns, and freshman quarterback Jayden Johannsen, who completed 15 of 22 passes for 149 yards. Despite Mines' 3-8 record last fall, Lewis, who is 6-foot, 200 pounds, earned first-team RMAC honors while rushing for 1,385 yards.&nbsp; Although he did not score in the game, he carried 44 times for 179 yards against the Eagles last fall. The Hardrockers' quarterback a year ago, Toby Smith, completed only 17 of 46 passes versus CSC last season, but six of them went for touchdowns.&nbsp; Now a sophomore, Smith is still on the roster but has lost his starting job to Johannsen. Listed at 6-2, 205, Johanssen was the quarterback at Sioux Falls Washington High School when the Warriors went 33-2 and won three consecutive state championships.&nbsp; He initially enrolled at North Dakota State, but redshirted there in 2019 and transferred to Mines. The Hardrockers have a new head coach this fall. He is Charlie Flohr, a native of Gillette, Wyo., and a 2002 graduate of Dakota State at Madison, S.D.&nbsp; He had spent the past 14 years as the offensive coordinator at perennial power Northwest Missouri State, which played in seven NCAA Division II national championship games during that time. The Eagles also will be at home on Saturday, Oct. 24 for a 2 o'clock game against Black Hills State. The last three games on the schedule will be on the road.&nbsp; They will meet the Hardrockers in Rapid City on Oct. 31, play at Nebraska-Kearney on Nov. 7 and at Black Hills State in Spearfish on Nov. 14. CSC Athletic Director Joel Smith said seating Saturday night will be limited to 75 percent of capacity in Don Beebe Stadium, which has a capacity of 3,500.&nbsp; Fans are encouraged to wear masks, wash or santitize their hands and practice social distancing.&nbsp; &nbsp; Tickets may be purchased in advance through Chadroneagles.universitytickets.com. Reserved tickets will be $16, adults general admission $13 and $11 for youths and seniors. They also will go on sale two hours prior to kickoff at the Elliott Field ticket booth. Scottsbluff High School is Nebraska Girls State State Golf Champion and Anna Kelley
won the individual title on a playoff hole.&nbsp; The
Bearcats cruised to a girls golf title Tuesday at Monument Shadows in Gering,
taking 22 shots of Monday’s total in their second round and winning the
championship by 51 strokes at plus-110.

It took two playoff holes for a pair of
rivals schools to settle who’d win the individual title. Scottsbluff sophomore Anna
Kelley clipped Gering senior Madilyne Schlaepfer after both finished their two
rounds at 12-over.

Gering claimed 6th place in the team
standings by one stroke over Grand Island Northwest.

Alliance came in last, but improved
their second day scores by 16 shots as a team.

Chadron senior Maddy Pelton came in 12th.

In Columbus at the Class C tournament
Broken Bow is your champion with a 48-shot victory over Lincoln Christian.

Kimball ended state in 11th
place and Mitchell slipped to 15th. Kimball junior Peyton Wise was the best local finisher with 6th place and a plus-22 total.

Individually the winning score was written in by Abbigail Broderson from
Boone Central with an 11-over par two-day total.

The Big Ten West rivals have met on Black Friday each year since the Huskers joined the Big Ten and the 2020 matchup will mark the 10th&nbsp;straight season Nebraska and Iowa have squared off on the day after Thanksgiving. Overall, this will mark the 31st&nbsp;straight season Nebraska has played on Black Friday, dating back to the 1990 season. In addition to 10 matchups with Iowa, the Huskers played Colorado for 15 straight seasons from 1996 to 2010, and met Oklahoma six consecutive years from 1990 to 1995. ⛳|Nebraska HS Girls State Golf Notebook: Day One

One of western Nebraska’s all-time outstanding athletes, Gary Hollstein, a native of Rushville, died on Friday, October 9 at Bickford Cottage in Sioux City, Iowa, of complications related to Covid 19.&nbsp; His wife and their two children were at his side.

Hollstein, 72, had a terrific senior year at Rushville High School in 1966-67.

He was the quarterback on the Longhorns’ football team that had a perfect 11-0 record, led the basketball team in scoring with a 16-point average and was undefeated in both hurdles, tying the Class C record in the 180-yard lows and breaking the record in the 120-yard highs at the state track meet.

He also was the all-class gold medal winner in the high hurdles at the state meet in 14.60 seconds.&nbsp; The mark was the Class C state record for 38 years until it was finally broken by Lucas Lavicky of David City Aquinas in 2005.

Hollstein had finished second in Class C at state in both hurdle races as a junior.

Following high school graduation as a member of the National Honor Society, he attended the University of Nebraska and earned letters as a member of the Cornhuskers’ National Championship football teams in both 1970 and 1971.

The Rushville football team that Hollstein quarterbacked in the fall of 1966 was a juggernaut.&nbsp; The Longhorns outscored their opponents 490 to 54 points (44.5 to 4.9 per game) and outgained them 4,458 to 1,157 yards (378 to 105 per game). They breezed through the regular-season at 9-0 and won the Rangeland Conference and Panhandle C Conference championships by defeating O’Neill and Minatare, respectively, in playoff games.

He was a standout on both offense and defense.&nbsp; While the Longhorns had three excellent running backs who combined to rush for 2,189 yards, he ran for 354 yards and scored 16 touchdowns.&nbsp; He also completed 51 of 107 passes for 684 yards and nine touchdowns.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hollstein also was the team’s return specialist.&nbsp; He returned six kickoffs for 254 yards, an average of 42.3 yards, and 19 punts for 289 yards, an average of 15.2 yards.&nbsp; His kickoff returns included touchdown runs of 85 and 87 yards and punt returns of 48 and 57 yards that went for TDs.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While playing safety, he participated in 42 tackles and intercepted five passes that he returned for 132 yards, including one for a touchdown.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; At the end of the season, Hollstein earned first-team Class C all-state from both the Omaha and Lincoln newspapers and he was selected to play in the Nebraska Shrine Bowl the following summer.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After graduating from UNL in 1971,&nbsp;he joined the FBI and spent the first two years at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia, on the training staff before being assigned to the FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., for eight years.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He left the FBI in March 1981 and returned to Rushville to work in a bank with family members.&nbsp; In 1989, he built and opened seven Arby’s restaurants in and around Sioux City, Iowa.

&nbsp;In January 1992 when he was in his early 40s, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and left him with physical limitations. However, he remained positive and joyful the past 28 years. He joined his high school football teammates in Lincoln in 2016 when the Longhorns were recognized as a Golden Anniversary team by the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame.&nbsp;&nbsp;

By: Con MarshallOne of western Nebraska’s all-time outstanding athletes, Gary Hollstein, a native of Rushville, died on Friday, October 9 at Bickford Cottage in Sioux City, Iowa, of complications related to Covid 19.&nbsp; His wife and their two children were at his side.Hollstein, 72, had a terrific senior year at Rushville High School in 1966-67.He was the quarterback on the Longhorns’ football team that had a perfect 11-0 record, led the basketball team in scoring with a 16-point average and was undefeated in both hurdles, tying the Class C record in the 180-yard lows and breaking the record in the 120-yard highs at the state track meet.He also was the all-class gold medal winner in the high hurdles at the state meet in 14.60 seconds.&nbsp; The mark was the Class C state record for 38 years until it was finally broken by Lucas Lavicky of David City Aquinas in 2005.Hollstein had finished second in Class C at state in both hurdle races as a junior.Following high school graduation as a member of the National Honor Society, he attended the University of Nebraska and earned letters as a member of the Cornhuskers’ National Championship football teams in both 1970 and 1971.The Rushville football team that Hollstein quarterbacked in the fall of 1966 was a juggernaut.&nbsp; The Longhorns outscored their opponents 490 to 54 points (44.5 to 4.9 per game) and outgained them 4,458 to 1,157 yards (378 to 105 per game). They breezed through the regular-season at 9-0 and won the Rangeland Conference and Panhandle C Conference championships by defeating O’Neill and Minatare, respectively, in playoff games.He was a standout on both offense and defense.&nbsp; While the Longhorns had three excellent running backs who combined to rush for 2,189 yards, he ran for 354 yards and scored 16 touchdowns.&nbsp; He also completed 51 of 107 passes for 684 yards and nine touchdowns.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hollstein also was the team’s return specialist.&nbsp; He returned six kickoffs for 254 yards, an average of 42.3 yards, and 19 punts for 289 yards, an average of 15.2 yards.&nbsp; His kickoff returns included touchdown runs of 85 and 87 yards and punt returns of 48 and 57 yards that went for TDs.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While playing safety, he participated in 42 tackles and intercepted five passes that he returned for 132 yards, including one for a touchdown.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; At the end of the season, Hollstein earned first-team Class C all-state from both the Omaha and Lincoln newspapers and he was selected to play in the Nebraska Shrine Bowl the following summer.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After graduating from UNL in 1971,&nbsp;he joined the FBI and spent the first two years at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia, on the training staff before being assigned to the FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., for eight years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He left the FBI in March 1981 and returned to Rushville to work in a bank with family members.&nbsp; In 1989, he built and opened seven Arby’s restaurants in and around Sioux City, Iowa.&nbsp;In January 1992 when he was in his early 40s, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and left him with physical limitations. However, he remained positive and joyful the past 28 years. Covid-19 safety measures for Chadron State football fan attendance

&nbsp;GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – October 10, 2020 --&nbsp;There were only two scoring plays in the first 60 minutes of football, but the Colorado Mesa Mavericks needed just one more than the Chadron State College Eagles in overtime to win a 10-7 defensive struggle on Saturday in Grand Junction. "At the end of these losses," said CSC Head Football Coach&nbsp;Jay Long, "the players all know. It hurts to lose. If it doesn't, you're not working hard enough. The part I'm happy about is that our team is fighting for each other. That's what got us into the overtime to begin with." The teams took a 0-0 deadlock into the halftime locker room, after both teams missed two field goals in the first half. In Mesa's case, kicker Luis Ruiz-Diaz hooked tries of 45 and 28 yards. CSC's&nbsp;Drake Holdren&nbsp;missed a 37-yarder and had a 40-yarder blocked. Up until the final drive of the half, the Eagles and Mavs only had 229 yards of combined offense. Holdren's blocked field goal was one of two chances in the game that CMU thwarted. The other, from 30 yards out, came early in the third quarter as the Eagles tried to answer a Colorado Mesa touchdown that broke the tie game and made it 7-0. That score came on the Mavs' second offensive play of the third quarter. It was CMU sophomore backup running back Jesse Rodriquez taking the ball on a 61-yard scamper just 2:40 into the second half. Rodriquez entered the game on his team's second play of the game and received the majority of carries among the Mesa running backs after starter Isaac Maestas was injured on the first play and never returned. Rodriquez carried the load for CMU, finishing with 173 rushing yards on 22 carries and catching two passes for six yards. They're going through all the same things we have." "Defensively, our scheme really worked. We gave up one big play, but otherwise we put together a really good game. Our defensive line needs a real shout-out. Their goal is to knock the offensive line back and force the ball to our linebackers, and that's what they did. Bearcat pitcher Kymber Shallenberger limited Alliance to a pair of hits in a short three inning shutout victory to open the playoffs Monday. She struck out five and didn't walk a batter.&nbsp; The Bearcats scored 11 times in the opening inning and got a huge day from Mariyah Avila who homered, tripled and drove in four runs.

F|&nbsp;(2) Gering 7, (3) Chadron 6

A four-run bottom of the seventh inning&nbsp;capped by a walk-off RBI sent Gering into the semifinals. Nicki Todd's fly to right brought in the winning run, which had reached base on an error and got into scoring position via a wild pitch.&nbsp; Chadron had built a 6-3 advantage with a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth.&nbsp; Madeline Wiese went 2/4&nbsp; at the plate with three RBIs and a home run for Gering.

F|&nbsp;Elimination: Chadron 11, Alliance 6 -&nbsp;Alliance Eliminated

Chadron avoided an upset and elimination Monday with a late-inning comeback.&nbsp; Trailing Alliance 6-4 in the sixth, Chadron exploded for seven runs in the final two innings to win and survive to play Tuesday.&nbsp; Ciara Hudson came through with a two-run double in the fourth to give Alliance a 5-4 lead, and the Bulldogs made it 6-4 with a run coming in on a bunt in the next at-bat.&nbsp; Chadron got the biggest hit of the day in the sixth with a bases-loaded triple from Kadence Wild that scored three and gave the Cardinals a 7-6 lead.&nbsp; Back-to-back RBI doubles from Maci Rutledge and Josie Downing in the seventh put the Cards up 10-6.

F|&nbsp;Semifinals: Scottsbluff 9, Gering 6

Gering made a mid-game push but couldn't catch the tournament's top seed as Scottsbluff moved into the finals with a 9-6 win.&nbsp; Tied 2-2 after the first inning, Scottsbluff got three more in the second frame to take a 5-2 lead. After getting to within 6-3 in the fifth, Gering got a huge two-run hit from Gianni Aguilar to put pressure on the top seed Bearcats, 6-5. Scottsbluff would add three in the final inning to pull away and advance to the title game. Avery Fox led the Cats with three RBIs on a pair of hits. Her teammate Brady Laucomer went 4/4 with two RBIs.

Gering didn't waste any at-bats to open Tuesday's elimination game scoring eight times in the first inning and racking up 15 hits on the day to eliminate Chadron.&nbsp; Gering added five more runs in the third to lead 13-2, and carried a 19-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth.&nbsp; Chadron was able to get a rally going with six touching home plate but the game finished in four innings when the Cards were retired.&nbsp; Gianni Aguilar and Madeline Wiese both had four Gering RBIs...Aguilar homered.&nbsp; For Chadron, Kennady Stack brought in three runs, Haylee Wild homered and Kadence Wild doubled and tripled with an RBI.

KANSAS CITY (AP) —The NFL postponed this week's game between New England and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs&nbsp;after ''positive COVID-19 tests on both teams.'' ESPN reported on Saturday that Patriots&nbsp;quarterback Cam Newton&nbsp;was among those testing positive.

The NFL said on Saturday that the game, originally scheduled for 4:25 p.m. EDT on Sunday, will be played on Monday or Tuesday, a move that would be possible only if there is no wider spread of the disease on the rosters.

The Patriots confirmed that a player has tested positive but did not reveal his name. Newton's agent did not immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press seeking confirmation.

The only known Chiefs player to test positive is quarterback Jordan Ta'amu, a member of the practice squad who has not appeared in a game but would have spent time in meetings with Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and the team's other QBs.

It is the second game this weekend that has been affected by COVID-19. After an outbreak on the Titans, the matchup between Pittsburgh and Tennessee was postponed - originally for a day or two, and then until Oct. 25 as the positive tests accumulated.

To fit it in, the Steelers' game against Baltimore that day was pushed back to Nov. 1.

The Patriots had been planning to fly to Kansas City on Saturday afternoon. Instead, players left the facility to await further instructions. The team said in a statement that the COVID-positive player has entered self-quarantine and that players, coaches and staff who were in close contact with him were tested Saturday morning and all were negative.

Earlier this week, Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty&nbsp;said the league might have grown overconfident after making it through training camps and the first two weeks of the season without a major outbreak.

''But at the end of the day, we are in a pandemic,'' he said. ''So what happened in Tennessee, although it kind of shocks us, it's not really surprising. I think we all knew at some point we might get some positive tests.

''So it's like, 'We got this,''' he said. ''I think this is just a little shocker, but it's also a wakeup call, like 'Hey, the virus is still here and it will affect any and everybody. It doesn't care that we're trying to play football.'''
