High school football state championship games will not be held at the home of the Huskers this fall.&nbsp; 

The NSAA has determined that the State Football Championships will not be played in Lincoln at Memorial Stadium on November 23rd and 24th.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Class A, B, C1, C2, D1, and D2 State Championship Football Games will be played at home sites on Friday, November 20th.&nbsp;&nbsp;The higher seed will host in all classes. Game times will be mutually agreed upon by the participating schools.&nbsp;&nbsp;The host schools will be required to follow the previously established NSAA Post-Season Protocols.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Class D6 Championship Football Game will proceed as scheduled in Kearney at Cope Stadium on Friday, November 20th.

High school football state championship games moved out of Memorial Stadium

&nbsp;Lincoln –&nbsp;The Nebraska men's basketball added its highest-ranked recruit in the modern era on Friday, as Bryce McGowens signed a National Letter-of-Intent to attend Nebraska next season. McGowens, a 6-foot-6, 170-pound guard from Pendleton, S.C., is a consensus top-35 national recruit, and ranked as high as No. 23 nationally by Rivals. He is the No. 26 recruit nationally by 247 Sports and No. 33 nationally by ESPN. McGowens is the No. 3 shooting guard nationally in the 247 Sports Composite, which combines all of the national major recruiting services. McGowens is the first-top 50 recruit to sign with the Huskers coming out of high school in nearly 30 years. Nebraska Coach&nbsp;Fred Hoiberg&nbsp;has signed the program's two-highest rated recruits in this year's signing period. Wilhelm Breidenbach, who signed on Wednesday, is rated No. 53 nationally by ESPN. "I believe that signing Bryce changes the whole trajectory of our program." Nebraska Coach&nbsp;Fred Hoiberg&nbsp;said. "He is the centerpiece of what I believe is the strongest class that Nebraska basketball has ever signed. Since I've been here, we have talked about building a program that can have sustained success, and adding a player of Bryce's caliber shows that we building something special here. It shows that Nebraska can compete for some of the top players in the country. It also says a lot about the type of person that Bryce is. He wanted to go to a place where he can create a legacy and help Nebraska basketball reach new heights. McGowens attends Legacy Early College after spending his first three seasons at Wren High School, totaling 1,835 points on 51 percent shooting, 323 rebounds, 220 assists and 126 steals. A three-time all-state performer and two-time Region 1-AAAA Player of the Year, he is a career 42 percent shooter from 3-point range. As a junior, McGowens averaged 25.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game while leading the school to a 25-5 record and an appearance in the Class AAAA Upper State championship game appearance. His junior season was punctuated by a school-record 65 point performance in the second round of the state tournament, as he hit 22-of-28 shots from the field, including eight 3-pointers. That was one of seven 30-point efforts as a junior. McGowens earned regional player of the year accolades for the first time as a sophomore when he averaged 26 points per game on 55 percent shooting, including 45 percent from 3-point range, in leading Wren to a 22-7 mark and a Class AAAA runner-up finish. He burst on the scene as a freshman, averaging 18 points per game while shooting 41 percent from long range. He played for Team Thad on the prestigious Nike EYBL circuit. Huskers sign first five-star recruit in hoops history

&nbsp;CHADRON, Neb. -- October 22, 2020 --&nbsp;Chadron State College's final football game, scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota, is canceled due to an uptick in COVID-19 cases in the surrounding community. The university, which has been unable to play since October 17 due to quarantine protocol, also came to a separate agreement with South Dakota School of Mines to scuttle the 136th Black Hills Brawl, scheduled for November 21 in Spearfish. There are no plans to reschedule the games.&nbsp; "We appreciate the concern Black Hills State has for the safety and well-being of their student-athletes, as well as ours, and we support their decision," CSC Athletic Director Joel Smith said.&nbsp;"We look forward to resuming a full football schedule next fall." Refunds for tickets purchased online will be processed automatically. Chadron State football game Saturday canceled

In every sport,&nbsp; in every season, teams will see a lot of highs and lows....exciting wins, tough losses, injuries and now... quarantines.&nbsp; The Alliance Girls volleyball team, saw all of that in 2020, but managed to play through the challenges and have a successful season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Bulldogs wraped up their season at a team banquet Thursday night and despite the current situation had a lot to smile about.&nbsp; Reserve Coach Angie Hiemstra began the night talking about the difficulty in playing through quarantines, and got emotional telling&nbsp; how hard it was to tell a player they would have to sit out , due to Covid exposure.&nbsp; But how proud she was that the team kept playing and bonded together, and finished with a 10-3 record.&nbsp; Coach Hiemstra presented the following Reserve Team Awards. Which were voted on by the team.

Junior Varsity Coach Heather Jensen also talked about dealing with quarantines and not knowing from match to match who would be available,&nbsp; but were able to post an 8-6 record and win a JV tournament championship. Coach Jensen presented the following Junior Varsity awards.

Head Coach Jessica Kaiser finished the evening thanking the 2 seniors on this years team....Billi Alvarado and Kelsey Horton,&nbsp; for their commitment, leadership, encourgement and for putting the team first. Coach Kaiser also talked about the challenges this year . She said of the 19 players on the team, 12&nbsp; at one time or another were in quarantine and several matches late in the year were cancelled,&nbsp; but the Bulldogs finished 11-16 and played some very&nbsp; exciting volleyball.&nbsp; &nbsp;Senior Billi Alvarado set a new school record for career assists with 1346 and the team was competitive in each match.&nbsp; Coach Kaiser presented the following Varsity Awards...also voted on by the entire team.

AHS Volleyball battles through a difficult season with courage and determination

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska volleyball program and Head Coach&nbsp;John Cook&nbsp;announced the 2021 signing class on Wednesday. The Huskers' class is ranked No. 1 by PrepVolleyball.com and all six signees are ranked in the top 70 nationally by the site. The stacked class includes five of the top 16, four of the top 10 and all of the top three recruits. Nebraska is the only school that is expected to sign more than two top-16 recruits this signing period, according to PrepVolleyball.com. The class also includes three Nebraska natives, something Cook boasted about.&nbsp; "The state of Nebraska produces some of the best volleyball talent in the country," Cook said. "We are committed to keeping the top kids here to play at home." Outside hitter&nbsp;Ally Batenhorst&nbsp;(Houston, Texas), middle blocker&nbsp;Rylee Gray&nbsp;(Elkhorn, Neb.), outside hitter&nbsp;Lindsay Krause&nbsp;(Papillion, Neb.), outside hitter&nbsp;Whitney Lauenstein&nbsp;(Waverly, Neb.), setter&nbsp;Kennedi Orr&nbsp;(Eagan, Minn.) and defensive specialist/libero&nbsp;Lexi Rodriguez&nbsp;(Sterling, Ill.) make up this year's signing class. "In the summer of 2017, we decided to run a camp and call it the Dream Team Camp," Cook said.&nbsp;"We invited our top recruits in the class of 2021.&nbsp;Well, a little over three years later, their signing day has now arrived. Batenhorst is ranked the No. 3 overall prospect by PrepVolleyball.com and the No. 2 outside hitter. The Houston, Texas, native has played four varsity seasons for Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas.&nbsp; To date, Batenhorst has played in 400 career sets. She has recorded 2,143 kills, 242 blocks, 1,232 digs and 160 aces. As a senior, she's hitting .366 and is averaging 6.5 kills per set, which are both on pace for career-best totals.&nbsp; A two-time MaxPreps Underclass All-American and a first-team Under Armour All-American, Batenhorst was on the 2020 USA National Training Team. In 2019, she was named a PrepVolleyball.com All-American. In 2018, Batenhorst helped the USA 18U National Team win the gold medal at the NORCECA Volleyball Championships in Honduras. In 2017, Batenhorst was named PrepVolleyball.com's National Freshman of the Year in addition to earning All-America accolades from the site. Batenhorst also ran track and won several awards in the high jump for Seven Lakes High School. Outside of athletics, she is a member of the National Honor Society and is a mentor for PAL (Peer Assistance &amp; Leadership). In 2020, she earned academic all-state honors. Batenhorst is active in her community and has coached young athletes, volunteered at events through her church and has helped with hurricane Harvey and flood relief efforts.&nbsp;&nbsp; Batenhorst was born on July 26, 2002, in Omaha, Neb. She is the daughter of Kurt and Susan Batenhorst. Susan attended UNL and Kurt played basketball and ran track at Nebraska-Wesleyan. Batenhorst has two sisters, Casey and Danielle. Casey is a junior on the volleyball team at Seven Lakes High School, while Danielle plays volleyball for Gonzaga.&nbsp; Gray played four varsity seasons for Elkhorn South High School in Elkhorn, Neb., and advanced to the state tournament all four years. A middle blocker, Gray helped the Storm win the district title in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 and the metro conference championship in 2019 and 2020. In 2020, Gray hit a career-best .442 and helped the Storm earn the No. 1 seed in the Class A State Tournament and win the state title after just two seasons in Class A. The 6-4 standout was named to the all-metro team in 2018 and 2019. Gray also was an all-class pick as a sophomore and a junior, even with Elkhorn South's move from Class B to Class A for the 2019 season. In the Storm's first season in Class A, Gray hit .408 and averaged 3.3 kills per set. She also totaled 43 aces and 99 digs for Elkhorn South as a junior.&nbsp; Gray finished her career with 1,383 kills, 476 blocks and a hitting percentage of .423.&nbsp; She played in 406 sets and also had 75 aces.&nbsp; Gray also played basketball and ran track for the Storm. Off the court, she is a member of the National Honor Society and earned academic all-state honors in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Gray is active in her church and has volunteered with Relay for Life since the age of 13.&nbsp; Gray was born on Sept. 22, 2002, in Omaha, Neb. She is the daughter of Scott and Deb Gray. She has one sister, Skylar.&nbsp; Krause is ranked the No. 2 overall prospect by PrepVolleyball.com. She played four seasons for Skutt Catholic High School in Omaha, Neb. The outside hitter led the SkyHawks to four straight Class B state titles in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.&nbsp; The outside hitter was named the 2019-20 Nebraska Volleyball Gatorade Player of the Year after hitting .418 with 360 kills, 152 digs and 28 blocks as a junior in 2019. The three-time all-conference pick was named to the Omaha World Herald All-Nebraska First Team and the Lincoln Journal Star Super-State First Team in 2017, 2018 and 2019.&nbsp; Krause finished her career with 1,449 kills and 135 solo blocks in 338 sets played. Krause hit .411 which included a career-best .475 as a senior in 2020.&nbsp; Krause played club volleyball for Premier Nebraska and was a member of the 2019 USA 18U National Team that won the FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship in Egypt. Krause also played basketball for Skutt and was an all-state honorable mention in 2018 and 2019. In the classroom, she earned academic all-state honors, academic all-conference honors and has been named to the Skutt Catholic Honor Roll.&nbsp; Krause was born on Dec. 11, 2002, in Omaha, Neb. She is the daughter of Pat Krause and JoAnna Draper. She has two brothers, Conner and Landon.&nbsp; Lauenstein (pronounced LAWN-steen) is ranked the No. 16 overall prospect by PrepVolleyball.com and is the No. 2 player in her class in the state of the Nebraska. An outside hitter, Lauenstein played three varsity seasons for Waverly High School in Waverly, Neb., and helped the Vikings reach the Class B State Tournament all three seasons.&nbsp; Lauenstein played 281 sets for the Vikings and finished with 1,366 career kills, 121 blocks, 740 digs and 87 aces, while hitting .338. As a junior in 2019, Lauenstein hit a career-best .407 and was named to the Class B All-Tournament Team at the state championships. Following her impressive season, she was named to the Lincoln Journal Star Super-State First Team.&nbsp; Lauenstein was a&nbsp;two-time Class B all-state pick, earning first-team honors as a junior in 2019 and second-team honors as a sophomore in 2018. She was named to the all-conference teams in 2018 and 2019. Lauenstein played club for VC Nebraska.&nbsp; Lauenstein also ran track for the Vikings. In the community, Lauenstein has volunteered with the Matt Talbott kitchen and with her high school team. The daughter of Ryan and Carla Lauenstein, she was born on Sept. 24, 2002. She has one older brother, Tyler and two younger sisters, Hallie and Gracie. Orr is ranked the No. 1 recruit in the nation. The Minnesota native has been the starting setter for Eagan High School since the end of her seventh-grade season. The Huskers' class is ranked No. 1 by PrepVolleyball.com and all six signees are ranked in the top 70 nationally by the site. The stacked class includes five of the top 16, four of the top 10 and all of the top three recruits. Nebraska is the only school that is expected to sign more than two top-16 recruits this signing period, according to PrepVolleyball.com. The class also includes three Nebraska natives, something Cook boasted about.&nbsp; "The state of Nebraska produces some of the best volleyball talent in the country," Cook said. "We are committed to keeping the top kids here to play at home." A middle blocker, Gray helped the Storm win the district title in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 and the metro conference championship in 2019 and 2020. In 2020, Gray hit a career-best .442 and helped the Storm earn the No. 1 seed in the Class A State Tournament and win the state title after just two seasons in Class A. The 6-4 standout was named to the all-metro team in 2018 and 2019. Gray also was an all-class pick as a sophomore and a junior, even with Elkhorn South's move from Class B to Class A for the 2019 season. In the Storm's first season in Class A, Gray hit .408 and averaged 3.3 kills per set. She also totaled 43 aces and 99 digs for Elkhorn South as a junior.&nbsp; Gray finished her career with 1,383 kills, 476 blocks and a hitting percentage of .423.&nbsp; She played in 406 sets and also had 75 aces.&nbsp; Gray also played basketball and ran track for the Storm. Off the court, she is a member of the National Honor Society and earned academic all-state honors in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Gray is active in her church and has volunteered with Relay for Life since the age of 13.&nbsp; Gray was born on Sept. 22, 2002, in Omaha, Neb. She is the daughter of Scott and Deb Gray. In the classroom, she earned academic all-state honors, academic all-conference honors and has been named to the Skutt Catholic Honor Roll.&nbsp; Krause was born on Dec. 11, 2002, in Omaha, Neb. She is the daughter of Pat Krause and JoAnna Draper. Husker volleyball powerhouse adds incredible recruiting class

CHADRON, Neb. -- November 11, 2020 -- Thursday morning Chadron State's football game at Black Hills State in Spearfish on Saturday afternoon was slated to take place.&nbsp; Kickoff will be at 2 o'clock. Both CSC Athletic Director Joel Smith and Head Coach&nbsp;Jay Long&nbsp;said Monday that following conversations with their counterparts at Black Hills the outlook was favorable. Smith said Yellow Jackets' AD Jhett Albers told him the outbreak of COVID that has seen Black Hills State call off two games this fall has slowed down, players who were affected or quarantined appear ready to resume playing and the game should take place. Smith added that he believes the Black Hills players will be evaluated again at mid-week to make sure everything is a go. The Yellow Jackets opened their abbreviated schedule on October 10 by playing at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City and &nbsp;hosted Colorado Mesa the following Saturday, but have not played since then.&nbsp; The first game that was cancelled was to have been at CSC's Elliott Field on October 24.&nbsp; Black Hills also was to have hosted South Dakota Mines this past Saturday, Nov. 7, but because of the Yellow Jackets' COVID situation, it was postponed until the 21st in Spearfish. The Jackets lost both of the games they played.&nbsp; The Mines Hardrockers won the opener 34-17 and Colorado Mesa romped to a 56-7 verdict the next week. Black Hills has a new coach this year. Josh Breske, who was a standout offensive lineman at Black Hills when Long, now in his ninth season as the Eagles' head coach, was the Yellow Jackets' mentor 2009-11.&nbsp; Breske also was a graduate assistant at CSC one year after Long came to Chadron State, his alma mater.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Black Hills roster includes several players who were western Nebraska high school standouts.&nbsp; They include Korby Campbell of Gordon, Trent Reed of Hay Springs, Mitch McKibbin of Bayard, Claysen Davis of Cody-Kilgore and Lane McGinley of Valentine. Chadron State finishing season at arch-rival Black Hills State Saturday

"We were very thankful to be able to play this season".....That has been the common theme for every fall sport in the Covid limited 2020 season. Alliance was no different than a lot of high schools in Nebraska.&nbsp; The Bulldogs lost one game due to Covid cases and quarantines, but were able to play 8 games this season.&nbsp; AHS Head Coach Chris Seebohm praised his team for continuing to work and play hard despite the situation,&nbsp; and even though the record was just 1-7, Alliance did a lot of good things and were a better team at the end of the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Seebohm spoke about each of the Senior players and thanked them for their leadership and strong work ethic, and for being great teammates. Most of this years senior class were 4 year team members and multi-year starters and letter winners.&nbsp; The 2020 class included....Jesus Acosta, Caeson Clarke, Roman Garza, Mario Garza, Keegan Grant, Jaden Kelley, Chase King, Logan Leistritz, Jace Moss, Jaxon Minnick, Jaxon Preble, Zach Tunheim and manager Alex Pfeiffer.&nbsp; Coach Seebohm also spent a moment to give special thanks to assistant coach Kurt Lambert who is stepping down from coaching after 18+ years with the Bulldogs.&nbsp; Seebohm also presented the following awards, which were voted on by the team.

Thankful to play..Bulldogs celebrate football season

With snow falling and temps in the 20's, it certainly wasn't softball weather, but there were plenty of warm feelings, laughs and even a few tears, as the Alliance High School Girls softball team members, coaches and families closed out the 2020 season.

Senior players&nbsp; Payten Gibson, Shaylee Messersmith and Keeley Mazanec along with managers Olivia Knapp and Caisey Pfeiffer were the guests of honor.&nbsp; Coaches Carlos Palomo, Brian Johnston and Steve Gullion shared their thoughts and a few good stories about this years team.&nbsp; 

Head Coach Carlos Palomo had some special words for this years seniors, as they were some of the first athletes he coached at Alliance Middle school when they were 7th graders.&nbsp; Palomo thanked the parents, volunteer coaches Alex and Bailey Clear and the Alliance administration for their support and was thankful the Bulldogs were able to play this year, dispite the Covid-19 situation.&nbsp; Alliance finished with a 5-25 record, but Palomo stated the team was playing their best ball of the season in the final 2-3 weeks and was pleased the team continued to work hard and always gave great effort.&nbsp; Palomo challenged the underclassmen to build team chemistry and commit themselves to working in the offseason and during the summer.

Assistant Coach Brian Johnston, who also manages the summer program,&nbsp; stressed the players need to make a commitment to off season work outs and summer ball and strive to keep improving.

Seniors Payten Gibson, Shaylee Messersmith, Keeley Mazanec, Olivia Knapp and Caisey Pfeiffer all spoke about their love of the game and how grateful they were to be able to play this season...and how much they enjoyed being part of the team.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have a knotty path to avoid infamy.

They need a strong second-half surge to avoid becoming the first franchise in NFL history to miss the playoffs for a half decade following a Super Bowl triumph.

Making such a run is a daunting prospect for an injury-riddled team that’s 3-5 with their remaining opponents a combined 36-23. That slate features division leaders Kansas City (8-1), Buffalo (7-2) and New Orleans (6-2).

The Broncos had high hopes of catching the Chiefs in the AFC West this season after adding speed through the draft and muscle through free agency. But they’ve been&nbsp;ravaged by injuries&nbsp;and rattled by COVID-19 opt-outs,&nbsp;exposures and infections.

Von Miller aims to beat the odds and return from ankle surgery next month, but Courtland Sutton (knee), Jurrell Casey (biceps), Mike Purcell (foot) and Ja’Wuan James (opt-out) are all done for 2020 as is rookie&nbsp;Albert Okwuegbunam&nbsp;(ACL).

Coach Vic Fangio&nbsp;admonished his players&nbsp;not to gripe about losing their bye week last month when the NFL juggled the schedule in response to an outbreak of the novel coronavirus in New England.

Fangio suggested it just as easily could have been the Broncos dealing with a COVID-19 cluster.

In recent weeks, three Broncos players, three assistant coaches, two executives — GM John Elway and CEO Joe Ellis — and numerous staffers at team headquarters have either contracted the virus that causes COVID-19 or been exposed to it.

Infections by O-linemen Graham Glasgow and Darrin Paulo and an exposure to defensive end Shelby Harris forced the Broncos, who are one of 14 NFL teams in intensive COVID-19 protocols, to meet remotely and to cancel a practice in each of the past two weeks.

Those missed reps have caught up to Denver's young roster.

“That’s a real thing, I’m not going to deny it, but it’s also a convenient excuse and we’re not going to use it as an excuse,” Fangio said after the Broncos’ 34-27 loss at Atlanta on Sunday.

The Broncos have won just 30 of 72 games since winning their most recent Super Bowl title in Peyton Manning’s farewell game.

Much of the blame for this five-year funk goes to Denver starting over way too often and starting out slow way too much.

QB Drew Lock has started 11 games but missed 13 with thumb and shoulder injuries, thwarting both his development and Elway’s evaluation of him. Lock went 4-1 last December but Fangio fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello in January and replaced him with Pat Shurmur, the Broncos’ fifth OC since Super Bowl 50.

That turnover has made rhythm on offense as elusive as the end zone — which Denver has reached just five times before the half so far.

Denver’s defense isn’t without blame. The Broncos played poorly on both sides in falling behind 27-6 Sunday one week after trailing the Chargers 24-3. They roared back to win that one 31-30, but fell short in Atlanta.

“You’re just not going to be able to do stuff like that week in and week out in the NFL,” safety Justin Simmons said. “So, the point is that we’ve got to be able to play a full game.”

The Broncos have trailed by double digits at halftime the past three weeks and in five of their past seven games.

In the past two weeks, they’ve scored six fourth-quarter touchdowns, but Shurmur is sticking with his system and refusing to transfer the up-tempo approach to the first half.

Lock would love speeding things up from the get-go.

“You’re talking to a biased quarterback here who went up-tempo in I think three of my four years of college,” he said.

Fangio said his faith in Shurmur is unshaken despite the season-long struggles.

“My confidence is good. Pat’s an experienced guy. He’s been through this before,” Fangio said. “You know, the good thing about being experienced, you’ve seen the highs and the lows. Unfortunately, we’re going through the lows right now, but he’s had plenty of highs in his career, and we’re optimistic that we’ll get this thing turned around soon.”

LG Garett Bolles has gone from train wreck (46 flags in his first 48 games) to bullet train on track for a colossal payday.

Tight end depth. The Broncos’ room was the envy of the league two months ago but Jake Butt (hamstring), Austin Fort (knee) and Andrew Beck (hamstring) are on IR and Okwuegbunam is done for the year.

Starting CBs A.J. Bouye (concussion) and Bryce Callahan (ankle) are expected to return this week.

100: Rookie WR Jerry Jeudy had his first 100-yard game, catching seven passes for 125 yards and a TD against Atlanta.

“If we didn’t finish with a dub, it doesn’t mean anything,” said Jeudy, a first-round pick who has already lost more times in Denver (five) than he did in four years at Alabama (four).

“I think we’re all ready to stop the ‘It’s part of the process’ hoopla, whatever you want to call it, the ‘process’ or ‘young guys’ or whatever,” Lock said.

“There’s a lot of football left and we just have to hit our stride earlier in games.”

Ryan completed 25 of 35 passes for 284 yards with one interception. The Falcons are 3-6 overall and 3-1 under interim coach Raheem Morris. Atlanta led Denver 20-3 at halftime. Drew Lock, trying to lead another fourth-quarter comeback following last week’s dramatic win over the Los Angeles Chargers, threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score in the final period. The Broncos fell to 3-5.

Falcons fly by Broncos 34-27

KEARNEY, Neb. -- November 7, 2020 --&nbsp;College&nbsp;football, particularly offensive football, was alive and well here Saturday afternoon when long-time rivals Chadron State College and University of Nebraska-Kearney tangled in an old-fashioned shoot out at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium. Kearney operated its option offense to perfection in the early going, jumping out to a 21-7 first quarter lead and was ahead 38-14 early in the second half. But Chadron State eventually found ways to slow down the Lopers' attack, revved up its own forces and scored three touchdowns in the final 20 minutes to have whittled the deficit to 45-35 when time ran out. Chadron State Coach&nbsp;Jay Long&nbsp;said he was proud that his team kept battling. "We got beat on some big plays early in the game, but we continued to compete and things were closer in the final quarter," Long noted. The 80 points and 1,105 total net yards that the long-time foes combined to produce are both all-time highs in the series, which dates back to 1921 and has now been played 72 times. The previous high point total of 74 was in 1997 when the Eagles won 40-34 in overtime at Kearney, and the previous high yardage figure was 940 two years later during Chadron State's 24-18 victory. The hosts finished with 627 yards and the Eagles with 478 Saturday. Kearney's attack was led by sophomore quarterback TJ Davis, who carried 20 times for 252 yards. He scored his team's first two touchdowns on runs of nine and 79 yards and added another in the fourth period on a second nine-yard jaunt. Long said Davis may be the best running quarterback he's ever seen. Davis threw just five passes, but completed two of them for 86 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown toss to D'Angelo Shepherd in the third period. His other completion was a 59-yard hook up with Joe Stiffend on the play preceding Davis's fourth quarter TD. Freshman Damien Cearns scored Kearney's remaining two touchdowns on a 79-yard burst in the opening quarter and a three-yard run in the second period.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron State's offense also had some clout.&nbsp; After Kearney went 75 yards in 10 plays for its first touchdown, the Eagles answered with an 80-yard drive in eight plays that was capped by an 18-yard pass from quarterback&nbsp;Dalton Holst&nbsp;to inside receiver&nbsp;Cole Thurness. Midway in the second quarter, Holst threw about a 15-yard pass over the middle to wide receiver&nbsp;Montel Gladney, who raced to the end zone to complete a 74-yard play.&nbsp; The Eagles combined both passing and rushing for their second half touchdowns.&nbsp; They went 80 yards on 10 plays in the middle of the third, when bruising tailback&nbsp;Jalen Starks&nbsp;powered his way the final nine yards.&nbsp; Starks opened the drive with a 25-yard blast. Starks also scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth frame to complete a 59-yard march that saw Holst connect on a pair of passes to Gladney for 18 yards. The Eagles scored the game's final touchdown when Holst connected with&nbsp;Chad Mikelson&nbsp;on what officially was a 17-yard pass, but actually covered 27 yards because the CSC receiver made the grab in the back of the end zone. Holst competed 22 of 33 passes for 286 yards, despite lots of pressure from the Lopers' defense, which sacked him five times. Gladney caught five passes for 116 yards and Mikelson six for 61 to lead the receivers. Starks carried the ball 18 times for 125 yards while freshman&nbsp;Jeydon Cox&nbsp;had 12 rushes for 80 yards. Both teams' placekickers were perfect.&nbsp; Kearney's Junior Gonzales made six extra point tries and a 38-yard field goal just before halftime. Chadron State's Drake Holden was five-of-five on PATs. Kearney operated its option offense to perfection in the early going, jumping out to a 21-7 first quarter lead and was ahead 38-14 early in the second half. But Chadron State eventually found ways to slow down the Lopers' attack, revved up its own forces and scored three touchdowns in the final 20 minutes to have whittled the deficit to 45-35 when time ran out. Chadron State Coach&nbsp;Jay Long&nbsp;said he was proud that his team kept battling. "We got beat on some big plays early in the game, but we continued to compete and things were closer in the final quarter," Long noted. The 80 points and 1,105 total net yards that the long-time foes combined to produce are both all-time highs in the series, which dates back to 1921 and has now been played 72 times. The previous high point total of 74 was in 1997 when the Eagles won 40-34 in overtime at Kearney, and the previous high yardage figure was 940 two years later during Chadron State's 24-18 victory. The hosts finished with 627 yards and the Eagles with 478 Saturday. Kearney's attack was led by sophomore quarterback TJ Davis, who carried 20 times for 252 yards. He scored his team's first two touchdowns on runs of nine and 79 yards and added another in the fourth period on a second nine-yard jaunt. Long said Davis may be the best running quarterback he's ever seen. Davis threw just five passes, but completed two of them for 86 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown toss to D'Angelo Shepherd in the third period. His other completion was a 59-yard hook up with Joe Stiffend on the play preceding Davis's fourth quarter TD. Freshman Damien Cearns scored Kearney's remaining two touchdowns on a 79-yard burst in the opening quarter and a three-yard run in the second period.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron State's offense also had some clout.&nbsp; After Kearney went 75 yards in 10 plays for its first touchdown, the Eagles answered with an 80-yard drive in eight plays that was capped by an 18-yard pass from quarterback&nbsp;Dalton Holst&nbsp;to inside receiver&nbsp;Cole Thurness. Midway in the second quarter, Holst threw about a 15-yard pass over the middle to wide receiver&nbsp;Montel Gladney, who raced to the end zone to complete a 74-yard play.&nbsp; The Eagles combined both passing and rushing for their second half touchdowns.&nbsp; They went 80 yards on 10 plays in the middle of the third, when bruising tailback&nbsp;Jalen Starks&nbsp;powered his way the final nine yards.&nbsp; Starks opened the drive with a 25-yard blast. Starks also scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth frame to complete a 59-yard march that saw Holst connect on a pair of passes to Gladney for 18 yards. Gladney caught five passes for 116 yards and Mikelson six for 61 to lead the receivers. Starks carried the ball 18 times for 125 yards while freshman&nbsp;Jeydon Cox&nbsp;had 12 rushes for 80 yards. UNK option unstoppable early, CSC comeback falls short 45-35

Evanston, Ill.&nbsp;- In another game between Nebraska and Northwestern that came down to the final play,&nbsp;Luke McCaffrey's&nbsp;pass to the middle of the end zone intended for&nbsp;Wan'Dale Robinson&nbsp;fell incomplete to allow the Wildcats to escape with a 21-13 win over the Huskers at Ryan Field in Evanston, Ill., on Saturday afternoon. Nebraska suffered its second defeat to open the season despite putting up 442 yards of total offense and 28 first downs against Northwestern, while holding the unbeaten Wildcats to just 317 total yards and just 14 first downs. The Huskers pounded the ball up and down the field against a stout Northwestern defense, rushing for 224 yards on 43 carries (5.2 ypc), while holding Northwestern's potent ground attack to 148 yards on 38 totes (3.9 ypc). Nebraska also controlled the time of possession (32:27-27:33) for the game and matched the Wildcats in the turnover department as both defenses recorded a pair of interceptions. The Huskers were also penalized for 55 yards (9 penalties), compared to 64 (8 penalties) for Northwestern, but the Wildcats made more plays in the red zone on both sides of the ball to walk away with their first 3-0 start to a season since 2000. Junior quarterback&nbsp;Adrian Martinez&nbsp;led the Nebraska ground game with 102 yards on 13 carries, while adding 125 yards by completing 12-of-27 passes in three quarters of action. Redshirt freshman&nbsp;Luke McCaffrey&nbsp;added 49 yards on eight carries while completing 12-of-16 passes for 93 yards in just over one quarter of action. Senior running back&nbsp;Dedrick Mills&nbsp;also played a big role in the Husker offense, carrying 19 times for 59 yards, including Nebraska's only touchdown, while adding a career-high six receptions for 33 yards. Freshman&nbsp;Marcus Fleming&nbsp;led the Nebraska wide receivers with five catches for 75 yards, while sophomore&nbsp;Wan'Dale Robinson&nbsp;added four receptions for 32 yards. Northwestern jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Drake Anderson's 41-yard run with 8:29 left in the first quarter. It capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive that consumed 2:43 of clock and put the Wildcats in the driver's seat. That score held until the second quarter when Nebraska got on the board with&nbsp;Connor Culp's&nbsp;38-yard field goal with 11:29 left in the half to cut Northwestern's margin to 7-3. Culp's kick capped a 14-play, 56-yard drive engineered by Martinez, who converted twice on fourth down inside Wildcat territory to extend the drive before it stalled on the Northwestern 20. On the second play of the Wildcats' ensuing drive, redshirt freshman defensive back&nbsp;Myles Farmer&nbsp;intercepted a Peyton Ramsey pass that initially hit Husker defensive back&nbsp;Marquel Dismuke&nbsp;on the top of the helmet and ricocheted into the air. Farmer caught the ball at the Nebraska 40 and returned it eight yards to put the Husker offense back on the field in great starting position. After a 28-yard completion from Martinez to Fleming and a Martinez 13-yard run, the Huskers were knocking on the door with 1st-and-10 at the Northwestern 11. However, the Wildcat defense stiffened and forced the Huskers to settle for Culp's 36-yard field goal to trim the margin to 7-6 with 8:54 left in the half. Nebraska's defense continued to thwart the Cats on the next drive, forcing a three-and-out to give the Husker offense the ball in good position again on its own 36. Wildcats hold off Huskers on final play of the day, 21-13

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A 21-year-old University of Nebraska wrestler is dead after an accident Thursday morning in Lincoln.

The university announced the death of Christian Miller, a junior from Plainview, Nebraska. Details about the accident were not immediately released.

Miller was part of the wrestling program for four seasons. He was 15-9 overall, including a 12-3 record in 2019-2020.

Wrestling Coach Mark Manning called Miller's death "a tragic and devastating loss for everyone who knew and loved Christian." In a statement, Manning described Miller as a "young man full of energy with a bright future ahead of him."

Athletic Director Bill Moos said Miller's death "will have a deep impact on our wrestling program, including Christian's teammates, Coach Manning and his staff."

Miller was a four-time state champion at Plainview High School, where his career record was 169-2. He also was a two-time state qualifier in cross country at Plainview High.

COLORADO SPRINGS -- November 4, 2020 --&nbsp;Two Chadron State College football players received recognition on Tuesday in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's weekly football release. Freshman wide receiver&nbsp;Jahani Wright, of Miami, Florida, and senior defensive back&nbsp;Jeremiah Gutierrez, of Long Beach, California, were the recipients of the league's Player of the Week honors for offense and defense, respectively. Wright totaled 88 yards on three receptions last Saturday at South Dakota Mines, including the third quarter touchdown grab that put the Eagles ahead for good with a 16-9 lead. The 5-10 receiver used his vertical leap to elevate above a six-foot Mines defender to find the ball from quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4216">Dalton Holst</a>&nbsp;in a corner of the end zone. Gutierrez's seven tackles included two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack. The total includes 15 players and 12 staffers. This marks the second straight week that Wisconsin has canceled a football game due to the virus outbreak. The Badgers had been scheduled to visit Nebraska on Oct. 31. Neither game will be rescheduled.

Another Big 10 game claimed by COVID, Wisconsin-Purdue called off

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The novel coronavirus has reached the highest levels of the Denver Broncos organization with general manager John Elway and team president Joe Ellis testing positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

The Broncos said in a&nbsp;statement&nbsp;that both Elway and Ellis have minor symptoms but are "doing well' and will continue to work from home and in self-isolation and participate in virtual meetings while their health is monitored.

The team said contract tracing measures show that no players or coaches came into close contact with either Elway or Ellis recently.

“Based on a review of contact tracing data with the league, we are confident these cases originated independently outside team facilities,” the Broncos said. “There were minimal close contacts identified for each (no players or coaches) and those individuals have been notified.”

“While our facilities are closed for Election Day, coaches are conducting their game preparations today remotely as a precaution,” the team added. “Our organization will remain in communication with the NFL, making all decisions in consultation with the league and based on guidance from medical experts.”

The Broncos have had three assistant coaches go under the league's COVID-19 protocols — Curtis Modkins, Mike Munchak and Ed Donatell — in addition to right guard Graham Glasgow. Others at the team's headquarters also have been infected by COVID-19 in recent weeks.

The Broncos have been under the league’s enhanced COVID-19 protocols since Modkins’ infection. Those extra measures include increased distancing, face coverings on the practice field and inside the team’s facilities for players and coaches and remote team meetings. Position groups can still meet in person.

With those extra mitigation measures and only one Broncos player on the league's reserve/COVID-19 list, the league believes “there is not ongoing transmission among players and the day-to-day operations” in Denver, NFL chiefs medical officer Dr. Allen Sills said Tuesday. “But it’s something that we’re going to have to continue to monitor very carefully."

Sills said the Broncos have “done an excellent job in implementing our intensive protocols to minimize exposure within the team facility."

He said the spikes in overall coronavirus cases across the country, including Colorado, “increases vulnerability" for NFL teams. "And we have to look at where we think are likely sources of infection and so to date we’ve not seen transmission as extensively within the (Broncos) building there as we have coming from outside,” Sills said.

“But again, we are taking additional steps in Denver as we have in other situations to try to block off any transmission or any vulnerability and continue to monitor that."

Modkins, the team's running backs coach, returned to work last week after recovering from his infection. Munchak, their offensive line coach, was out all last week and Donatell, the team's defensive coordinator, went under COVID-19 protocols Sunday morning, skipping the Broncos' game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Glasgow was diagnosed on Friday, and the Broncos canceled their on-field workouts that afternoon and isolated two other O-linemen, backup guard Austin Schlottmann and starting right tackle Demar Dotson, as a precaution.

Schlottmann and Dotson returned to practice Saturday and played against the Chargers. Schlottmann replaced Glasgow at right guard.

Ellis began feeling ill Sunday morning and contacted the team's medical staff. As a precaution, he watched the&nbsp;Broncos' 31-30 comeback victory&nbsp;over the Los Angeles Chargers from home, the first time in 26 years he'd missed a Broncos home game.

Ellis continued working from home Monday and received a positive COVID-19 test Tuesday morning, as did Elway, who left work for home Monday after he began experiencing mild symptoms of the infection, the team said.

As part of the NFL's COVID-19 safety protocols put in place so the league could try to play the 2020 season during the pandemic, the Broncos have had all their employees tested daily for the virus. Players, coaches and other employees also wear contract tracing devices to help curb any outbreaks.

The Broncos (3-4) are scheduled to return to work Wednesday morning to continue preparations for their game Sunday at Atlanta (2-6).

The Broncos’ best player, linebacker Von Miller, was the first major North American sports star to announce he’d contracted the coronavirus this spring. Denver safety Kareem Jackson also was infected last summer. And on July 30, the Broncos placed fullback/tight end Andrew Beck on the reserve/COVID-19 list, which is intended for players who have tested positive for the virus or who are quarantining after being in close contact with an infected individual. Beck returned to the team on Aug. 17.

Miller is on IR following ankle surgery and hopes to return to action next month.

The Broncos were affected by the New England Patriots' COVID-19 outbreak last month when their game at Gillette Stadium was pushed back, first by a day and then by a week, when Cam Newton and Stephon Gilmore, among others, were infected.

That meant the Broncos' Oct. 18 home game against Miami had to get pushed back to Nov. 22, when they were scheduled to host the Chargers. The Chargers' game was moved up to Nov. 1, which was originally supposed to be the Broncos' bye.

DENVER (AP) — Rookie receiver KJ Hamler couldn't have envisioned a better time for his first career touchdown reception.

His&nbsp;1-yard catch while tumbling out of bounds&nbsp;with no time left Sunday gave the Denver Broncos a stunning 31-30 win over the hard-luck Los Angeles Chargers.

“I don’t think I’ve ever caught a game-winner before in my life,” said Hamler, who got one foot and his butt down inbounds for his third catch of the day, doubling his season total.

The seeds of Denver's improbable comeback were planted at halftime. Drew Lock implored his scuffling teammates to dig deeper in a pep talk he admitted was a rallying cry to the man in the mirror.

“There’s always yelling when you have a half like that,” Lock said of the Broncos’ 60-yard performance that led to a 14-3 halftime deficit and being booed by the 5,700 fans allowed into Empower Field.

The deficit would grow to 24-3 before the halftime speech kicked in.

The anger was similar to last week’s 27-point loss to Kansas City when four turnovers negated a Denver defense that throttled Patrick Mahomes.

Lock called that one a “much deserved-slash-needed yelling, and it was kind of deja vu coming into that locker room (Sunday with) all the yelling and screaming."

After managing just a field goal on their first eight drives, the Broncos (3-4) scored TDs on four of their next five possessions.

They got the ball at their 19 down 30-24 with 2:24 and one timeout remaining. On fourth-and-4 from the Chargers 18 with 7 seconds left, Lock’s pass to rookie tight end Albert Okwuegbunam was incomplete. Defensive back Brandon Facyson was whistled for pass interference, giving the Broncos the ball at the 1 with 1 second remaining.

Lock rolled right as Hamler cut in front of him and raced to the right side of the end zone. When safety Rayshawn Jenkins left Hamler to charge at Lock, the second-year QB hit Hamler as he was falling, just out of cornerback Tevaughn Campbell's reach.

“When we were in the huddle I said to the team, ‘This is how legends are made right here.’ And then we got the play and everything went blank,” Hamler said. “As soon as I saw the ball coming to me, first thing I thought was just secure the catch and fall. Drew put it on the money.”

Brandon McManus nailed the extra point to seal the shocking win. The Chargers (2-5) lost their eighth straight AFC West game despite another stellar performance by rookie Justin Herbert, who joined Deshaun Watson as the only QBs in NFL history with four straight games with three TD passes.

Despite that, the Chargers became the first team in NFL history to blow leads of 16 points or more in four consecutive games.

“We had it completely under control and the way we lost a game today, that is unacceptable,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. “And I take full responsibility for that.”

“We have to learn how to finish,” Jenkins said. “We can’t let these games like this slip away. This is the NFL. It don’t make sense. We’re going to try to fix it and move forward.”

After a slow start, the Chargers got two quick 80-yard touchdown drives in the final 1:48 of the first half to take a 14-3 lead.

Herbert hit Kennan Allen for a 9-yard score to make it 7-3 and Denver went three-and-out. Sam Martin’s punt traveled 69 yards — 9 yards more than Denver’s offense managed in the first half — into the end zone.

Herbert then directed another 80-yard drive, this one taking less than a minute and including a 36-yard throw to Mike Williams to the Denver 2 on rookie cornerback Michael Ojemudia with 22 seconds left. One play later, Herbert rolled right and fired a 2-yard touchdown strike to fullback Gabe Nabers.

“We held that team to 1 yard rushing in the first half (actually 2). In the second half they started running the ball all over us,” Lynn lamented.

Lock, who had thrown just one TD this season, admitted he was “worried about my job” at halftime."

“But I came in the locker room and when I gave that talk, it all just flushed out. I was like all right, I said it. It was like a therapy session," Lock said.

He threw TD passes to&nbsp;DaeSean Hamilton, Okwuegbunam and Hamler while throwing for 190 yards after halftime, and Phillip Lindsay raced for a 55-yard score as the Broncos piled up 104 yards rushing after halftime.

Chargers: DE Joey Bosa was out at the end while being evaluated for a concussion.

The win was the Eagles' second over the Hardrockers in two weeks. The first game was played in Chadron with the Eagles winning 41-25. They have now won all six of the matchups since the rivalry was renewed in 2016 after Mines joined the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, but none of them have been easy.&nbsp; Mines was fired up for the Halloween contest after downing Colorado Mesa 24-9 the previous Saturday. "It's always hard to beat a team twice in one season," CSC Coach&nbsp;Jay Long&nbsp;said.&nbsp; "We didn't do a good job of protecting our quarterback,&nbsp;Dalton Holst, in the first half, so we struggled. But our defense held and we did much better giving Holst time in the second half and it showed." The senior from Gillette connected on a pair of 39-yard passes to freshman&nbsp;Jahani Wright&nbsp;and a 40-yarder to senior tight end&nbsp;Baylor Hayes&nbsp;to spark the Eagles' attack in the second half.&nbsp; Wright caught the first bomb for a touchdown and the other two big gainers set up touchdowns. Neither team scored in the first quarter and Chadron State held just a 9-3 halftime lead. But both offenses got untracked in the second half when they combined for 47 points. Eagle offense rocks Hardrockers in second half of 37-22 rivalry win

CHADRON, Neb. -- October 28, 2020 --&nbsp;After having its home game against Black Hills State last Saturday afternoon cancelled because the Yellow Jackets had several players stricken with or quarantined because of the coronavirus, the Chadron State College football team is preparing to play its second straight game against South Dakota Mines this Saturday.&nbsp; Kickoff will be at 4&nbsp;p.m. in Rapid City. Black Hills notified Chadron State last Thursday that it would not be coming to play the Eagles. CSC Athletic Director Joel Smith said the college was totally supportive of the Yellow Jackets' decision. Naturally, cancellation of the game was disappointing to the Eagles. Head Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=387">Jay Long</a>&nbsp;said soon afterwards the coaching staff and players began concentrating on playing this Saturday and are hoping the remaining three games scheduled for this fall will be played. After the trip to Rapid City, the Eagles are due to visit Nebraska-Kearney on Nov. 7 and Black Hills on Nov. 14. Both of the latter games are slated to kick off at 2 p.m. Mountain Time. While the Eagles were idle on Saturday, the Mines Hardrockers defeated Colorado Mesa 24-9 in Grand Junction in something of a mild surprise. Mesa entered the game 2-0 after edging the Eagles 10-7 in overtime at home on Oct. 10 and romping past Black Hills in Spearfish 56-7 a week later while Chadron State was downing the Hardrockers 41-25 at home.&nbsp; Mines had beaten Black Hills 34-17 in both team's season opener on Oct. 10 in Rapid City. While the Eagles jumped out to a 21-3 halftime lead and were ahead by at least two touchdowns the rest of the way against Mines, the Hardrockers demonstrated they have lots of clout and can never be taken lightly. Chadron State racked up 599 yards against Mines, but the Hardrockers garnered 448 yards, dropped a likely touchdown pass early in the game and were deep in CSC territory when the Eagles intercepted two passes to kill the threats. After the picks, the Eagles' offense took it from there, putting together six touchdown drives of 75 or more yards for a remarkable accomplishment. Quarterback&nbsp;Dalton Holst&nbsp;completed 19 of 27 passes for 361 yards, including eight tosses to&nbsp;Cole Thurness&nbsp;for 175 yards and six to&nbsp;Chad Mikelson&nbsp;for 166. The Eagles also rushed 46 times for 238 yards, led by&nbsp;Jalen Starks, the 250-pound transfer who carried 17 times for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Starks' performance netted him the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week honor. South Dakota Mines' win over Mesa Saturday was its first in five games between the teams since the Hardrockers joined the RMAC. The visitors led 17-2 at halftime, added another touchdown in the third quarter and didn't let the Mavericks reach the end zone until early in the fourth period. "Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the safety and well-being of our Nebraska student-athletes has been our top priority, and we know Wisconsin is operating with the same guiding principle. We wish all of those impacted in the Wisconsin program a quick and full recovery from the virus. "With the cancellation of the game against Wisconsin, we did explore the possibility of securing a non-conference game for Saturday. The discussions we had were with teams that had already implemented stricter testing protocols than those mandated by the Big Ten Conference. Those details were non-negotiable if we were to bring a non-conference opponent to Lincoln. "At Nebraska, we will always make decisions based on what is best for our student-athletes, and to provide them with the best possible experience during their college careers. To this point, the young men in our program have worked hard to prepare for the football season and have made the necessary sacrifices in order to play in this unusual environment. With an already shortened season, we owed it to our student-athletes to explore any possible option to play a game this week. "We believe the flexibility to play non-conference games could have been beneficial not only for Nebraska, but other Big Ten teams who may be in a similar position as the season progresses.
