LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team won a 3-2 thriller against No. 9 Creighton on Tuesday night, 25-19, 25-16, 31-33, 16-25, 15-10, in front of a crowd of 8,924 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.&nbsp;

Nebraska improved to 6-1 on the season while Creighton suffered its first loss to fall to 5-1.&nbsp;

The Huskers were balanced offensively with Harper Murray (16 kills), Andi Jackson (15 kills), Lindsay Krause (15 kills) and Merritt Beason (14 kills) leading the way. Murray had a double-double with her 16 kills and 14 digs, and Jackson had career highs in both kills (15) and blocks (8) while hitting .379. Krause added five blocks, and Beason hit .306. Rebekah Allick chipped in nine kills and hit .333.&nbsp;

Bergen Reilly had a career-high 57 assists to go with 13 digs, three blocks and three kills. Lexi Rodriguez put up a season-best 21 digs. Laney Choboy added 12, and Olivia Mauch had seven.&nbsp;

Nebraska had a .234 hitting percentage in the match, and Creighton hit .209.&nbsp;

Norah Sis had 24 kills and 11 digs for Creighton. Ava Martin totaled 17 kills and 17 digs.&nbsp;

Set 1: A 4-0 run put the Huskers up 8-4. Jackson had two kills and a block with Murray, who also had a kill. After Creighton got a sideout kill, Reilly dumped a kill to the floor, Jackson and Krause combined for a block, and Murray served an ace to make it 11-5 Huskers. Kills by Krause and Murray made it 13-6 NU, but Creighton scored three in a row to cut it to 13-9. A kill by Beason preceded a kill by Murray on the longest rally of the set, and NU led 17-10. Two more kills by Jackson and Murray and a block by Jackson and Krause made it 21-13 Big Red. The Bluejays pulled within 22-17, but Krause connected for a kill and Creighton hit out for set point. The Huskers won 25-19, hitting .250 and holding Creighton to .100.&nbsp;

Set 2: Creighton held a 5-3 lead when kills by Murray and Jackson tied the score. Three blocks in a row by the Big Red made it 9-7 with Reilly and Allick contributing on two of them. Allick added a kill as the Huskers pushed their advantage to 12-8. Allick and Jackson struck three straight kills, and Jackson and Murray posted a block as the Huskers went up 18-11. Creighton went on a 4-1 spurt to pull within 19-15, but Jackson posted a sideout kill and Krause tacked on another as the Huskers built the lead to 23-15 after the 4-0 run. Allick put the set away, 25-16, with her sixth kill. NU hit .333 and held the Jays to .032.&nbsp;

Set 3: Nebraska's first lead of the set came at 11-10 after Murray rolled a shot to the floor, and Krause followed with an ace. After Creighton regained the lead, Jackson, Murray and Krause posted four straight kills, and Krause and Allick combined for a block and a 20-16 lead. Nebraska led 23-21, but Sis produced back-to-back kills, and Martin added one for set point for Creighton, 24-23. Murray came up big with her ninth kill to tie the score 24-24, but Martin rolled a kill to the floor for another set point. An incredible defensive effort to keep a ball alive at the net led to another kill by Murray, and on the next rally Murray tipped a kill for match point, 26-25. Creighton turned to Martin again for a kill and a 26-26 tie, but Reilly set Krause for a 27-26 match point. A Creighton block made it 27-27, and the Huskers mishandled a Creighton serve to put the Jays back on top, 28-27. Krause stepped up once again for the Big Red with her 11th kill to tie it 28-28, and Creighton touched the net to make it 29-28 Huskers. Then Sis tied the score at 29-29 with her 16th kill, but a back-row kill from Murray earned match point No. 4 for the Big Red. The Bluejays then posted a block and got a kill from Sis to make it 31-30, but Allick answered with a kill to tie it 31-31. However, Sis and Martin recorded back-to-back kills to give Creighton the 33-31 win.&nbsp;

Set 4: Creighton bolted to a 7-3 advantage as Nebraska called timeout. Creighton led 10-5 before kills by Jackson and Murray helped get NU within 11-8. But the Jays answered with a 5-0 run to go up 16-8. Creighton won the set, 25-16, to force a set five for the third time in the history of the series. Creighton hit .306 in the set and held NU to -.024. &nbsp;

Set 5: With Reilly serving to open the set, Krause terminated a kill before Allick hammered down an overpass, and another kill by Krause made it 3-0 Huskers. A Creighton service error and a kill by Beason put NU ahead 5-1. Allick, Jackson and Reilly tallied kills to take NU to an 8-4 lead as the teams changed sides. Reilly and Murray added kills for a 10-5 lead before Creighton scored two in a row to cut it to 10-7. But Krause's 15th kill made it 11-7. A kill by Beason kept NU in front, 13-9, and Jackson terminated her 15th kill for match point, 14-9. Murray's 16th kill ended the five-set thriller, 15-10.&nbsp;

Led by a stellar defense and two touchdowns early in the fourth quarter, the Chadron State College football team came from behind to defeat the Jamestown Jimmies 17-10 in a non-conference game in Chadron on Thursday night. 

Jake Marschall ran for 110 yards, part of a 228-yard day on the ground for the Eagles, and a fourth-quarter special teams touchdown by Rylan Wehr provided the difference as Chadron State earned its first win of the season to improve its record to 1-1 ahead of the RMAC season beginning in two weeks.

The Chadron State defense limited Jamestown to just six first downs and only 140 total yards, but the Eagles offense turned the ball over four times and didn't score until kicking a field goal with 6:49 left in the third quarter.

The Eagles' first turnover was a fumble that Jamestown safety Parker Chafee took 68 yards down the sideline for a touchdown with 3:17 left in the opening quarter to put Jamestown up 7-0. Chadron State's Brodie Roden appeared to run the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown, but the officials ruled he had initially signaled for a fair catch, wiping out what would have been an 87-yard return.

Late in the second quarter, Chadron State had a pair of 17-yard gains, the first on reverse by Roden and the other on a draw play by Rylan Aguallo, that put the ball at the Jamestown nine before the drive died. Chadron tried a fake field goal, but Jamestown stopped the Eagles short of a first down and the score remained 7-0 at halftime.

The Jimmies made it 10-0 soon after the second half began. Chadron State failed to field the kickoff, allowing Jamestown to claim it at the Eagles' 20. The Eagles defense held Jamestown to just five yards on their ensuing three plays as the Jimmies settled for a 32-yard field goal.  

Chadron State got on the scoreboard with 6:33 left in the third frame when Wilson Yee booted a 21-yard field goal. Chadron took advantage of a roughing the kicker call on Jamestown that wiped out an earlier 53-yard attempt and gave CSC a first down.

The Eagles scored their first touchdown of the season early in the fourth period by going 80 yards in nine plays. Freshman quarterback Wyatt Sprague connected with wide receiver Jamahd Monroe on a 17-yard pass in the end zone. Yee kicked the extra point to tie the score at 10. 

The Eagles' defense forced Jamestown to punt about a minute and a half later. However, the ball was snapped over the punter's head into the end zone, where sophomore Rylan Wehr recovered it for a Chadron State touchdown and a 17-10 lead after Yee made the PAT.  

Jamestown put together its best drive as the clock was running down, marching from its own five yard line to the Eagles' 40.  But with less than a minute remaining and on fourth down and one, Quarterback Johnny Grann's pass was picked off by CSC safety Dax Yeradi to clinch the victory.

The Eagles finished with 289 total net yards. Marschall carried 30 times for 110 yards and Aguallo 24 times for 79 yards to lead the ground game.  Sprague, a true freshman from Holyoke, Colo., also ran four times for 31 yards and completed eight of 13 passes for 63 yards after entering the game in the second quarter.

Linebacker Reed Henkel led the Eagles' defense with 12 tackles, eight of them unassisted.  Fellow linebacker Logan O'Brien had six stops, including a sack for a 10-yard loss that blunted a Jamestown drive midway in the fourth quarter. Eagles punter Brodie Eisenbraun punted just twice, one for 62 yards and the other for 46. Both bounced sideways out of bounds inside the Jimmies' five-yard line. 

For Jamestown, quarterback Johnny Grann completed 13 of 24 passes for 78 yards while running back Gavin Blomdahl had 12 carries for 39 yards to pace the Jimmies' ground game. Linebackers Mason Parker and Jed Rantz combined for 20 tackles to pace the Jimmies' defense. Each also had two tackles for loss and forced a fumble.

🏈 Eagles Rally To Beat Jamestown

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Chadron State volleyball lost in their opening game of the season, falling to three sets to Point Loma, the defending PacWest conference champions. The Sea Lions won by set scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-13.

Kally Kirkwood led the way for the Eagles with five kills while her sister, Kendyl, had 15 assists. Bella Adams finished with four kills while libero Alondra Hernandez finished with a team-high 10 digs.

The Eagles and Sea Lions were evenly matched in the first set, with the teams alternating points until 6-6. Point Loma opened things up with a 5-0 scoring run to turn a 12-10 advantage into a 17-10 first-set lead, then won six of the set's final seven points to clinch. The Sea Lions hit .400 in the first set.

The second set was filled with scoring runs. Chadron State won the first two points, but Point Loma took advantage of attack errors to take a 9-4 lead, then strung kills together to win nine of 10 points and lead 18-8. Chadron put together two separate 4-0 scoring runs to trim the deficit, but eventually lost the second set on a Nua kill.

Point Loma continued to be clinical offensively, hitting .333 in the third set to close out the sweep. Chadron kept it close early in the set, but Point Loma pulled away at the finish, winning nine of the match's final 10 points.

Chadron utilized the majority of its roster, with 14 players seeing the floor and 10 appearing in all three sets, including a pair of freshmen in Bayard, Nebraska's Danika Hassel and Belle Fourche, South Dakota's Mataya Ward. Hassel and Ward finished with three kills apiece.

The Eagles will take the court twice Friday as the San Diego Invite continues. Chadron State is scheduled to play Vanguard at 12 p.m. (MT) and Simon Fraser at 7:30 p.m. (MT). Both matches will be played at Cal State San Marcos in San Marcos, California. They will be available to stream on pay-per-view or followed via live stats.

A young Alliance team pulled off an impressive 28-15 victory over Gordon-Rushville last Friday finishing the game with 315 rushing yards and 118 yards through the air. The defense would force one interception and the special team's unit forced a fumble on the opening kickoff to start the second half and would turn that fumble into points on the scoreboard.&nbsp;

Bulldog sophomore Trini Trejo would finish the contest with 225 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Trejo is ranked 6th in the state of Nebraska in rushing yards. Junior quarterback Jett Herian would throw for 118 yards, one touchdown with junior wide receiver Espn Lanik had six grabs for 77 yards and one touchdown.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Bulldog defense was led by freshman free safety Caysen Robertson who finished with a team high 12 tackles. Junior linebacker Montes would finish with six tackles, one sack and used his speed to put pressure on the Mustangs quarterback all game. Herian would have an interception in the second half. DALLAS - The No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team fell 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 at SMU on Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 6,773 at Moody Coliseum.&nbsp;

The Huskers (3-1) committed 11 service errors and had just one ace, while SMU (2-1) aced Nebraska seven times and committed 10 service errors.&nbsp;

SMU outhit the Big Red .242 to .171, and had the edge in kills (39-36), blocks (10-9) and digs (43-36).&nbsp;

Merritt Beason had nine kills for NU. Andi Jackson had eight kills and hit .667 with six blocks. Harper Murray had six kills, and Rebekah Allick and Lindsay Krause each had five.&nbsp;

Bergen Reilly had 31 assists and 11 digs.&nbsp;

Naya Shime and Maya Tabron led the Mustangs with nine kills each.&nbsp;

The loss was Nebraska's first to an unranked team since 2017.&nbsp;

Set 1: The Huskers had seven kills in their first 13 attacks, but three service errors allowed the score to be tied at 9-9. The Mustangs went up 11-10, but kills by Beason and Murray put NU on top, 12-11. A block by Jackson and Murray and an SMU hitting error made it 15-12, and Beason terminated from the back row for a 16-12 Husker lead after a 4-0 run. Jackson added another kill and a block with Landfair for an 18-13 lead. Jackson then put down her fifth kill before serving her first career ace to make it 20-15. Nebraska led 21-16, but SMU went on a 6-0 run to go up 22-21. Lindsay Krause subbed in and immediatley terminated to tie the score at 22-22, but NU's fourth service error put SMU back on top. Allick and Beason then combined for a block to tie it again, 23-23, but back-to-back SMU kills gave the Mustangs a 25-23 win.&nbsp;

Set 2: SMU jumped in front to a 7-4 lead, but a Krause kill sparked a 3-0 Husker run. But SMU responded with a 4-0 run - including two aces - to go up 13-8. NU cut it to one at 19-18, but two more service errors helped the Mustangs go up 22-19, and SMU won 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead.&nbsp;

Set 3: NU separated from an 8-8 tie with kills by Allick and Murray and a block by Murray and Jackson for an 11-8 lead, but SMU came right back to tie it 11-11. Nebraska led 14-13 when SMU ripped off five points in a row to go ahead 18-14. SMU increased the lead to 23-15 after a 5-0 run and won the set and match, 25-18.

Former Nebraska basketball standout Keisei Tominaga will make his professional debut this week, as he competes for G League United in a pair of events this month.

G League United, a select squad of current and future G League stars, will host BC Mega MIS, a premier Serbian team known for developing elite NBA talent like three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić and NBA centers Ivica Zubac and Boban Marjanović, in the NBA G League Fall Invitational. The games are Wednesday, Sept. 4 and Friday, Sept. 6 at 9 p.m. central.&nbsp; The team will also compete in the 2024 FIBA Intercontinental Cup in Singapore from Sept. 12-15.&nbsp;

The games mark the third NBA G League Fall Invitational, which tipped off in 2022 with a pair of games featuring Victor Wembanyama and Metropolitans 92 against NBA G League Ignite.

Tominaga is the only rookie on the 12-member squad and comes off playing for Japan in the 2024 Paris Olympics.&nbsp; Tominaga, who recently signed an Exhibit 10&nbsp;contract with the Indiana Pacers, spent the past three seasons at Nebraska, totaling 1,074 points to rank 30th on Nebraska’s career scoring list while finishing seventh on NU’s career 3-point list with 178. A two-time All-Big Ten honoree, he enjoyed his best season in 2023-24, averaging 15.1 points per game while posting career highs in nearly every offensive category enroute to second-team All-Big Ten honors. His 76 3-pointers in 2023-24 ranked eighth on NU’s single-season chart while he was sixth in the Big Ten in 3-pointers per game. He had a career-high 31 points at Illinois, one of three career 30-point efforts as a Husker. His efforts helped Nebraska to a 23-11 record in 2023-24, a third-place Big Ten finish and the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2014.&nbsp;

The Chadron State College rodeo will be a week earlier than usual this year.&nbsp; The new dates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 6-8 at the Dawes County Fairgrounds.&nbsp; During the past 10 or so years, the CSC rodeo has been the second weekend in September, but it will be the first weekend this year.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; About 500 contestants, about the same as usual, from the 12 schools in the Central Rocky Mountain Region will be competing.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; CSC Rodeo Coach Lane Day said his team has about 35 members and should be competitive. The action will begin with slack at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6. Another session of slack, many of them barrel racers, will start at 8 a.m. Saturday.

🏈 SCOREBOARD: Nebraska Week 0 High School Football

The No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team swept Texas A&amp;M Corpus-Christi 25-9, 25-20, 25-15 in its home opener at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Friday night in front of a crowd of 8,956.

NU (2-0) outhit the Islanders (0-1) .427 to .143 in the match. It was the best hitting percentage by the Huskers since Oct. 1, 2021 (.457 vs. Michigan).&nbsp;

The Huskers had a 48-30 advantage in kills, 48-33 in digs and 7.5 to 2 in blocks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lindsay Krause led Nebraska with 13 kills on a .478 hitting percentage, while Andi Jackson added seven kills. Rebekah Allick and Merritt Beason each posted six kills, and Taylor Landfair and Harper Murray notched five apiece.&nbsp;

Bergen Reilly set the tone for the Huskers with 36 assists, 10 digs, four kills, three blocks and five service aces. All five of Reilly's aces came in the first set, and she started the Huskers off on a 10-0 run to begin the match.&nbsp;

Lexi Rodriguez added nine digs, while Murray had seven. Reilly, Krause and Leyla Blackwell tied for the team lead with three blocks.

Tori Arrington and Kyndal Payne led the Islanders, each with seven kills.

Set 1:&nbsp;The Huskers jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the match behind three aces from Reilly and three kills each from Krause and Allick. The Islanders kept it close and pulled to within three at 23-20 behind a Payne kill, but a Jackson kill and Reilly/Jackson block closed out the 25-20 set victory for the Huskers.

Set 3: A&amp;M Corpus Christi took a 4-1 lead to start the set, but Rodriguez served seven straight and Landfair notched two kills to help put NU ahead 8-4. Krause posted her 10th and 11th kills of the match and Blackwell registered her first as a Husker to give the Huskers the 15-8 lead heading into the media break. Reilly and Blackwell combined for two blocks to keep Nebraska’s momentum and make the score 18-8. The Big Red never relinquished its lead and took the set 25-15, and the match, 3-0. NU hit .517 in the third set.

The No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team swept Texas A&amp;M Corpus-Christi 25-9, 25-20, 25-15 in its home opener at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Friday night in front of a crowd of 8,956.NU (2-0) outhit the Islanders (0-1) .427 to .143 in the match. It was the best hitting percentage by the Huskers since Oct. 1, 2021 (.457 vs. Michigan).&nbsp;The Huskers had a 48-30 advantage in kills, 48-33 in digs and 7.5 to 2 in blocks.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>

 Nebraska-Kearney drove 86 yards in eight plays on the game’s opening possession for its first touchdown and connected on a 50-yard bomb in the second quarter for the game’s only other TD en route to topping Chadron State 18-6 when those teams opened Nebraska’s 2024 college football schedule Thursday night in Chadron.

              The outcome gave the Lopers first possession of the Good Life Trophy that will go to the winner of what is slated to be an annual rivalry after the NCAA decided in January to allow teams not in the same conference, but in close proximity of one another to play an early-season game during what is being called Week 0.

              All the scoring took place in the first half. Kearney’s opening drive was sparked by runs of 24 and 14 yards by sophomore tailback Isaac Harris before quarterback Reagan Jones connected with Shane Dailey on a 24-yard pass in the end zone with 4 ½ minutes gone off the clock

              Each team scored on both of its possessions in the second period. The Lopers drove 62 yards before settling for a 25-yard field goal.  Benefitting from a pair of 15-yard penalties against the visitors, Chadron State’s Wilson Yee booted a 39-yard field goal soon afterwards.

              The Lopers’ second TD came next. It featured the 50-yard pass from Jones to a wide open Reggie Anderson. Instead of kicking the extra point, UNK's kicker took the snap from center and ran for two points to make the score 18-3.

The Eagles’ Yee kicked another field goal, this one a 38-yarder, on the final play of the first half. It came after Chadron State’s alternate quarterback, Miguel Larios. completed four of five passes during a 60-yard drive as the clock was winding down.

Larios was rushed into the game on the Eagles’ second possession when starting quarterback, D.J. Ralph, who had completed his only three passes, left the game with an apparent shoulder injury. Larios also displayed amazing accuracy, connecting on nine of 10 tosses in the first half.

However, in the second half, Kearney intercepted three of Larios’ passes to blunt the Eagles’ efforts to catch the Lopers.  Parker Wise, Jamere Jones and Jabea Tilong made the picks.  Those were the game’s only turnovers.

Harris was the game’s leading rusher with 24 carries for 121 yards. Jake Marschall rushed 18 time for 78 yards to pace the Eagles. Jones completed 12 of 20 passes for 180 yards.  Anderson made three of the catches for 81 yards.     

The Lopers finished with 348 total yards, but managed only 75 in the second half. The Eagles finished with 214.

Western Nebraska football fans are in for a rare treat.  The Chadron State Eagles will kick off the season by hosting the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 29 at Elliott Field.

It will be the 73rd game in the schools' all-time series and the first time the intrastate rivals have played a season-opener.  It was made possible when the NCAA ruled in January that teams from different conferences but in close proximity of one another could play an early-season game during what has been labeled 0 Week.

The ruling has re-established the CSC-UNK rivalry.  Beginning next year, the Eagles and the Lopers are due to play one another the second game of each season.  They will be "trophy games," with the winner taking home the newly-minted "Good Life Trophy" that will be unveiled at the season-opener Thursday night.

              Both teams hope to be improved this fall. The Eagles had a 5-6 record last season while the Lopers fell to 3-8. Both have added numerous transfers to the roster in an effort to regain their winning traditions.  

              Chadron State Head Coach Jay Long said he's been pleased how his team has developed. He said the Eagles "came together really well" during spring drills and have continued on that path this fall.  That's a total of 38 practices, he added. 

              "I like where we're at," he said Saturday following a two-hour non-contact workout. "We haven't changed much this fall.  Our depth chart is about the same as it was at the end of the spring.  I know we've got more depth (than we had a year ago). I think we're ready to play. We've practiced long enough."   

              Both Chadron State and Kearney have recruited a new quarterback. The Eagles' is D.J. Ralph, formerly the starter at Saddleback College in California, while the Lopers have brought in Reagan Jones, who was the starting quarterback for 14 games at Missouri Western in 2021 and '22.

              The Eagles' top players include senior defensive end Hunter O'Connor of Broomfield, Colo. He's been a first-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference choice each of the last two seasons.  Last fall, he made 18 tackles for 77 negative yards, including 8.5 quarterback sacks. 

              Two more Eagles also were first-team all-RMAC last year.  They are another defensive lineman, junior Tanner True of Eaton, Colo., and wide receiver Tommy Thomas of Fort Collins, Colo., who caught 55 passes for 908 yards and 10 touchdowns a year ago. 

              Another of the Eagles' weapons is senior tight end Peter Krohn, also from Fort Collins.  He's caught 49 passes for 478 yards and six TDs the past two years while earning back-to-back second-team RMAC honors. 

              Chadron State also features outstanding kickers. Junior Brodie Eisenbraun of Sturgis, S.D., punted 57 times for a 41.8-yard average and senior Wilson Yee of Littleton, Colo., booted 10 field goals, including a school-record 61-yarder last season.

              Yee also plays the piano for the Chadron State jazz band. 

              Area players on the Eagles' two-deep depth chart include center Tyler Smith of Scottsbluff and running back Rylan Aguallo of Mitchell.  Long said 85 players will suit up for the first game.  Almost 45 more players, most of them freshmen who will redshirt this fall, also are on the roster. 

              Kearney's top players include defensive end Quillan Felton, who had 10 tackles for a minus 60 yards last season while earning honorable mention all-conference.  All of the other UNK all-conference choices a year ago were fifth-year seniors.

However, Coach Ryan Held and his staff have added at least 16 transfers, most of whom participated in spring practice. Eight of them are listed as probable starters for the season-opener.

Murray and Jackson smashed back-to-back kills, and a block by that duo made it 8-2 Huskers. Jackson had two kills to keep the Huskers ahead 10-6. Jackson had another kill before a solo block by Krause kept NU up by four, 12-8. Krause, Allick and Murray tacked on kills for a 15-10 Husker advantage, and an ace serve by Krause - her third of the match - made it 16-10. Kills by Murray and Jackson helped NU stay on top 19-14, and another block by Allick and Beason made it 21-16.
