The Alliance Bulldogs are in a hunt for a District Final in Class B girls' basketball, but the first step is getting a big win in the Sub-District first round against Western Conference foe Gering in Scottsbluff on Monday.

Alliance is coming off an away win nine days ago at Lexington 53-18 to improve to 8-15, while Gering is 6-16 after a 67-47 loss to North Platte to end the regular season.

Alliance will try to avenge an opening season loss 49-41 to Gering and hopes to face a Scottsbluff team in the Sub-District Final on Tuesday.

Alliance is currently ranked 18th in the Class B RPI, and a win over Gering would put them right around the bubble to make a District Final, and then would face Scottsbluff on Tuesday for an outright shot at District Final featuring the top 16 teams in Class B.

Alliance girls basketball faces Gering in Sub-District round (KCOW)

Alisha Little scored 32 points and added 13 rebounds as the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves defeated the Chadron State women's basketball team 71-58, Saturday evening in the Chicoine Center.

The loss drops Chadron State to 6-16 overall and 4-14 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Thunderwolves improve to 15-11 overall and 10-8 in conference play, good enough for the eighth spot in the conference standings.

CSU-Pueblo opened the game with a 23-14 lead to end the first quarter. CSC responded by outscoring their opponents 19-14 in the second quarter to trail 37-33 at half. The second period was the only one of the game that the Eagles won, in part to making 66.67% (8-12) shot attempts to close the first half.

The Thunderwolves defense stepped up in the second half by holding the Eagles to 12 points in the third period and 13 in the fourth.

For the game, CSC shot 22-56 (39.3%) from the field and 6-19 (31.6%) from three. CSU-Pueblo finished 26-59 (44.1%) from the field and 4-15 (26.7%) from beyond the arc. One major disparity in the game was the difference at the free throw line. Chadron State made eight of their 16 attempts for 50% while the visitors converted 15 of 18 attempts for 83.3 percent.

Seven points were scored by the Eagles due to 13 Thunderwolve turnovers while CSU-Pueblo scored 15 points off 17 Eagle turnovers. Chadron State was outrebounded 39-34 in the loss.

Little's 32 points were scored on an efficient 13-17 from the field and 5-7 from the charity stripe. Autumn Watts joined her teammate in double figures with 10 points.

Kylie Krise, a junior from Briggsdale, Colorado and Ashayla Powers, a junior from Longmont, Colorado, both had a team high 15 points.

Pueblo's RMAC Player of the Year candidate dominates in win over CSC

For the second game in a row, the Chadron State College men's basketball team trailed by a wide margin at halftime, gallantly fought its way back into contention, but could not quite "close the deal" while sustaining a heart-breaking loss on its home court again Saturday night.  

After finally catching up and hitting a 3-pointer to tie the score at 78-78 and send the game into overtime, but still lose 90-82 to New Mexico Highlands on Friday night, the scenario was much the same in the second game.  

The Eagles battled tooth and nail and got within three points with 19 seconds remaining, but came out on the short end of the 80-75 score versus Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday night.

The outcome gives both teams 11-13 season records. Chadron State is now 8-10 in the Rocky Mountain Conference standings, one game ahead of the ThunderWolves in the playoff picture.

Pueblo led by just 24-23 with six minutes remaining in the opening half when it outscored the Eagles 19-5 to build its 43-28 intermission advantage, which proved to be insurmountable.

The ThunderWolves shot 54.5% (18-33) from the field and the Eagles just 37.7% (11-29) in the opening 20 minutes.  The visitors also had two 3-pointers and CSC one.  Each had made five free shots.

In the second half when Chadron State outscored Pueblo 47-37, the Eagles made 59.4% (19-32) of its field goal shots, and the Wolves 41.7% (10-24). CSC also made one more trey, (3-2), but was outscored 15-6 at the charity stripe. 

Overall, both teams shot almost exactly 49% from the field and each made four treys.

Each team had three players combine to score 52 points. For Chadron State, Bryce Latimer tallied 24, Jalen Patterson 16 and Josh Robinson 12. For Pueblo, Armon Muldrew scored 24, Corbin Garber 16 and Makiah Morris 12. 

The Eagles edged the ThunderWolves 84-82 on Latimer's layup with three second left when the team played in Pueblo on Dec. 1 while opening the conference schedule.

Chadron State will be at home again this coming weekend to host MSU-Denver&nbsp; and Colorado Mines.

Chadron State playoff hopes fading fast after 4th straight upset loss

Ashayla Powers scored 25 points and added 12 rebounds but it wasn't enough for the Chadron State women's basketball team against New Mexico Highlands Friday night, falling 71-66 in the Chicoine Center.

The Eagles outscored their opponents 15-9 in the first quarter while shooting 42.86 percent (6-14) from the field. The Cowgirls only made 3-18 attempts (16.67 percent) in the period.

New Mexico Highlands responded by outscoring the Eagles by 10 in the second period to lead by four at half and by six in the third period. The Cowgirls shot 46.7 percent in the two periods combined compared to the Eagles 26.7 percent.

Chadron State, who trailed by as much as 16 in the fourth quarter, outscored its opponents by five in the period and lowered the deficit to three with 2:40 remaining but were unable to regain the lead.

In the game, CSC finished 22-62 (35.5%) from the field. They were 4-21 (19%) from three and 18-24 (75%) from the charity stripe in the loss. The Cowgirls shot 37.9% (25-66) from the field. Like Chadron State, they struggled from three, making 3-13 (23.1%) but shot an identical number from the free throw line.

Joining Powers in double figures was Allison Olsen, a sophomore from Douglas, Wyoming, with 11 points.

Three Cowgirls scored in double-figures, led by Juliana Aragon with 16. Eva Ongoongotau added 13 and Vanessa Herrera had 10 for the visitors. Ongoongotau had 11 rebounds to finish with the games second double-double.

Chadron State hosts CSU-Pueblo on Saturday in the Chicoine Center. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

CHADRON, Neb. -- The Chadron State College men's basketball team, which during the past two years has treated its fans to many more wins than they had become accustomed to during the past two decades, gave it their best shot to pull off what would have been a rousing victory Friday night in the Chicoine Center, but the outcome was a heart-breaker to both the Eagles and their fans.

New Mexico Highlands, not one of the basketball powers in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference over the years, dealt the disappointment.  The Cowboys led 48-35 at halftime and were ahead even further—by 16 points with 11 minutes remaining. That's about when the Eagles finally started clicking behind their two senior leaders—Bryce Latimer and Josh Robinson.

The pair combined to score their team's next 13 points, shrinking the deficit to five points at 68-63 with 5 minutes and 19 seconds remaining. The Cowboys' Aahmond Scarbrough interrupted the rally by hitting a jumper, but Chadron State got a couple of huge boosts from 6-9 junior John Jenkins.  

With 4:44 to play, he nailed a 3-poiinter and then just over a minute later, made a rousing dunk off of a pass from Robinson, who had blocked a Cowboy's shot, grabbed the rebound and threw a lengthy pass to Jenkins, who was on the fly and made it a two-point game—70-68—with 2 ½ minutes still to play. 

After each team came up empty on its next possession, Latimer put the Eagles ahead for the first time since the game's opening minute by nailing a 3-pointer out of the right corner.  

There were five lead changes in the next 100 seconds before Jenkins came up with another clutch shot—a 3-pointer launched from well behind the arc at the top of the key, It tied the game at 78-78, ultimately sending it into overtime. 

Highlands had possession of the ball for approximately the final 20 seconds as the clock expired and for some reason—maybe it was because to the Eagles' stiff defense—didn't even uncork a desperation shot.

With just over a minute gone off the OT clock, Latimer hit a jumper to put Chadron State ahead. But 16 seconds later Nathan Hasberry tied the score for Highlands and the Eagles never led again.  The New Mexico team outscored them 12-4 in the extra session and won the game 90-82.

It was a setback for the home team, which is now 11-12 for the season and 8-9 in the RMAC and in danger of not making the playoffs. 

The Eagles certainly had some exceptional performances and so did Highlands. Latimer finished with 29 points and seven assists, both game-highs, while Robinson tallied 22 points and was the game's leading rebounder with 13.  Latimer scored 20 points and Robinson 14 in the second half.             

Jenkins added 10 points, eight of them in the final 3 ½ minutes of regulation on the dunk and two clutch treys.

Highlands, now 8-13 overall and 6-11 in the conference, was led by 6-4 Kenard Richardson with 26 points and 5-8 Kyrie Thomas, whose size, quickness and results are a lot like Latimer's. He finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists.  Both are juniors. 

Scarborough added 13 points and Hasberry 10. 

Each team shot right at 43% from the field. Highlands had 34 total field goals and nine 3-pointers, both one more than the Eagles. The Cowboys were 13-of-16 at the free throw line, with four of them in the fleeting seconds of overtime. The Eagles were 8-of-9.

Undoubtedly, the game's most significant statistic was the Cowboys' 25-14 rebounding bulge at halftime. Twelve of the caroms were offensive. They helped Highlands take a dozen more shots than CSC in the first half, resulting in six more baskets and the 13-point intermission lead that was the key to  victory in the final analysis.

The Eagles will be back in action at home Saturday night against Colorado State-Pueblo, a 95-87 winner over Colorado Christian in Lakewood on Friday night.

2024 Alliance Football Schedule announced; Gering rivalry renewed

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Jordy Bahl, the softball pitching star who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nebraska-jordy-bahl-98906a61b5c2c6917a7435097e7036d4">transferred to Nebraska</a>&nbsp;after winning two straight national championships at Oklahoma, will miss the rest of the season after injuring her knee during the Cornhuskers' opener last week.

Bahl announced the anterior cruciate ligament injury in her left knee on&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/jordybahl/status/1757487856459616542?s=20">X and Instagram</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday. She was hurt while delivering a pitch in the third inning against Washington at an event in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on Feb. 8.

“With a heart thankful for God’s plan and timing, I will be red shirting this year, and looking forward to a season of growth and learning from a different point of view,” she wrote. “I’m thankful for the support of my family, friends, coaches, and staff. I’m truly blessed to have so many wonderful and loving people in my life. I’m not going anywhere. See you in 2025.”

Bahl will apply for a medical hardship for the 2024 season. Nebraska officials said they expect the hardship will be granted and that Bahl will have two seasons of eligibility.

 Huskers Jaz Shelley earns AP National Player of the Week

CHADRON, Neb. -- The Chadron State College football team will have a spring scrimmage against Wayne State on April 20th before hosting seven home games in the fall, Head Football Coach Jay Long announced on Tuesday.

CSC and Wayne State, who is coached by former Chadron State offensive coordinator Logan Masters, plan to have a joint practice with each other in Wayne, Nebraska on April 20 at 1 p.m. The Eagles finished 5-6 overall and 4-5 in RMAC play last season while the Wildcats went 8-3 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC.

In 2021, Wayne State and Chadron State had a joint practice during the spring. During that practice, there were no kick returns and quarterbacks were not tackled. While the players will have contact with their opponents, most of it will be "situational," Long said. 

Chadron State's fall football schedule includes seven home and four away contests.

At the 2024 NCAA Convention, Week 0 games got approved so teams are able to begin their seasons one week earlier than years past.

The season opens in Chadron on Thursday, August 29 with a 6 p.m., kickoff against a familiar opponent. The University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers will be traveling west. Last season, under the direction of new head coach Ryan Held, the Lopers finished 3-8 overall and 2-8 in MIAA play.

Chadron State and UNK last met in the fall of 2020 during the season that was shortened by COVID-19. The Lopers defeated the Eagles 45-35 in that matchup.

Week 1 will be another 6 p.m. kickoff in Chadron on Thursday, September 5. The opponent will be the Jamestown Jimmies, who are NAIA. The Jimmies finished last season with a record of 2-9. 

After a bye week, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play opens on September 21. The Eagles will have their third straight home game, against back to back national runner-up, Colorado School of Mines.

Road action starts on September 28 at Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks finished last season with a record of 6-5, including a win over CSC, 38-22.

The Eagles will alternate between home and away games the following seven weeks. On October 5, they will host Adams State before traveling to Las Vegas, New Mexico on October 12 for a matchup with New Mexico Highlands. Chadron State defeated the Grizzlies 53-14 and the Cowboys 24-21 in 2023.

A home matchup against Fort Lewis is on the schedule for October 19. The Skyhawks have lost 39 consecutive games and were defeated by Chadron State 57-20 last season.

The two South Dakota schools are the next two opponents for Chadron State. The Eagles will travel to Spearfish to face Black Hills State on October 26 before hosting South Dakota Mines on November 2. CSC split the two games last season, defeating the Hardockers in the season finale.

Behind Colorado School of Mines, the conferences other leaders in Western Colorado and CSU-Pueblo finalize the regular season for Chadron State. The Eagles travel to Gunnison on November 9 before hosting the Thunderwolves on November 16.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Jaz Shelley's 3-pointer with 30 seconds left gave Nebraska its first lead as the Cornhuskers rallied from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat No. 2 Iowa 82-79 on Sunday.

Nebraska and Iowa fans alike came to Pinnacle Bank Arena hoping to see Caitlin Clark set the NCAA women's career scoring record on a nationally televised celebration of women's basketball.

What they got instead was a huge performance by the Cornhuskers (16-8, 8-5 Big Ten), whose first win over a Top 25 opponent this season and first over Iowa in 10 tries was punctuated by a student-led court storming.

Clark scored 31 points but missed her final six shots, including one just before the buzzer. She was scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Clark now has 3,520 career points and needs eight more to pass Kelsey Plum's record of 3,527 for Washington from 2013-17.

Hannah Steulke's layup with 9:22 left gave Iowa (22-3, 11-2) its biggest lead, at 71-57. The Huskers then scored 23 of the next 31 points.

Shelley, who finished with 23 points including five 3-pointers, gave the Huskers the lead when she launched a 3 from the right corner as the shot clock was winding down.

Clark's 3-point try nicked off the front of the rim before Shelley made two free throws with 18.1 seconds left. Steulke scored to make it 80-79, but Shelley hit two more shots from the stripe, and Clark and Kate Martin missed 3s at the end.

Iowa had pulled away in the third quarter, making 9 of 12 shots and outscoring the Huskers 30-20.

Nebraska steals Caitlin Clark's thunder with 82-79 victory over No. 2 Hawkeyes

After trailing 39-29 at halftime, the Chadron State College men's basketball team rallied in the second half to tie the score at 61-61 with 2:47 to play. But the Eagles failed to score again and fell to Western Colorado 68-61 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game played in Gunnison on Friday night.

After knotting the score, the Eagles had difficulty getting good shots. They missed a pair of contested layups, turned the ball over twice, and failed to connect on a long 3-pointer at the buzzer,

Western also did not score for more than two minutes after the Eagles had caught up. But Amar Rivers made a free throw with 37 seconds remaining, missed the second shot but got the rebound and passed to Jamel Hollins, in the paint for a basket. 

The Mountaineers also were 4-of-4 at the free throw line in the final 17 seconds.

Each team shot around 40% from the field overall and exactly 33% from 3-point range.  However, Western was 9-of-27 from behind the arc and the Eagles were 4-of-12.

Chadron State had four players score in double figures—John Jenkins with 18, Josh Robinson 15, Jalen Patterson 12 and Dalton Peterson 11.  However, the Eagles managed just five more points from a fifth player.

The Mountaineers were led in scoring by guard Kade Juelfs' 14 points.  He was their only double-figure scorer, but nine teammates also scored, including Xavier Harris and Jamel Hollins with nine apiece and Tyler Halligan with eight. 

For the second game in a row, the Eagles played without their leading scorer, Bryce Latimer, apparently because of health issues. 

CSC is now 11-11 for the season and 8-8 in the conference. Western is 7-14 and 4-11.

The Eagles will play at home the next two weekends.

But the Eagles failed to score again and fell to Western Colorado 68-61 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game played in Gunnison on Friday night.After knotting the score, the Eagles had difficulty getting good shots. They missed a pair of contested layups, turned the ball over twice, and failed to connect on a long 3-pointer at the buzzer,Western also did not score for more than two minutes after the Eagles had caught up. But Amar Rivers made a free throw with 37 seconds remaining, missed the second shot but got the rebound and passed to Jamel Hollins, in the paint for a basket. The Mountaineers also were 4-of-4 at the free throw line in the final 17 seconds.Each team shot around 40% from the field overall and exactly 33% from 3-point range. 🏀MBB: Mountaineers deal Chadron State another crucial upset loss

The Western Colorado women's basketball team shot 59% from the field, including going 7-of-11 from 3-point range, in the first half, while building a 51-22 intermission lead and went on to defeat Chadron State 81-63 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game played in Gunnison on Friday night.

The Mountaineers' attack was led by sophomore Ivey Schmidt and freshman Jayda Maves, both of whom sank five 3-pointers while finishing with 25 points apiece.

After being overwhelmed by the hosts in the first half, the Eagles had more success in the second half, when they outscored Western 41-30.

The Mountaineers jumped out to a 22-10 lead in the first quarter by making eight-of-15 field goal shots and all five of their free throws.  They were even more successful in the second period, when they were nine-of-14 from the field, including six-of-eight from behind the arc.  They also were five-of-six from the charity stripe in the second stanza. 

Chadron State was only seven-of-19 with one 3-pointer from the field in the opening half, to go with seven-of-12 on free throws.

For the game, Western shot 46% (29-63) from the field overall and was 13-of-29 on threes. Chadron State finished at 40.8% (20-49) on its field goal shots and went 3-14 from long range.  CSC finished with 20 points at the free throw lin, twice as many as Western's total.

The Eagles' leading scorers were sophomore Allison Olsen with 17 points and senior Awoti Akoi with 16. Both are career-highs.

Both Maves and Schmidt, Western's 25-point scorers, made nine field goals, five of them treys, and added two free throws. There was one difference their stats.  Schmidt took just five 3-point shots and Maves launched 13.

Chadron State is now 6-15 for the season and 4-12 in the RMAC.  Western has the same number of wins in both categories, but has lost one fewer game.

The Alliance Bulldogs girls and basketball teams have their final basketball doubleheader games this weekend, starting tonight (Friday) at Dundy-County-Stratton and then at Lexington on Saturday.

The Bulldogs girls are currently in the chase for one of the final seeds in the Class B District Finals. Alliance is 7-14 and with a pair of wins this weekend could set themselves up for a run to the District Final if they have a good showing at the Sub-District round. They take on a D-C-S team that one of the better small school teams in Southern Nebraska who at 11-11 had a two-game winning streak snapped in a loss to 23-1 Southern Valley.

On the boys side, the Tigers are 17-5 while Alliance is 5-15. The Bulldogs have played a brutal schedule, but are hoping for a strong showing this weekend against both Dundy-County-Stratton and Lexington.

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. --&nbsp;The Chadron State College football team added 40 incoming freshmen to its roster on Wednesday, the official National Signing Day for Division II football. Of the 40 signees, 11 hail from Nebraska, 11 are from Colorado, seven call Wyoming home and the other 11 currently live in Montana, Utah, Illinois, Arizona, Florida, Texas, California and South Dakota, including walk-ons. &nbsp;"Our focus this year was on improving the size of our team," Head Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/jay-long/503">Jay Long</a>&nbsp;said.

"We recruited 24 student athletes over 6'2.The group contains five defensive linemen and linebackers, six safeties and one corner defensively. On offense, four wide receivers, three tight ends and running backs, one quarterback and 13 offensive linemen join the Eagles."It takes a ton of time, people and effort to recruit one student-athlete," Long said. 

"I would like to thank our campus, professors, admission staff, our team, coaches and athletic department for providing the effort of showing these young men how special of a place Chadron State College is."The lone South Dakota signee is a 6-1, 220-pound linebacker,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/gideon-waldrop/9551">Gideon Waldrop</a>. Waldrop was named 1st&nbsp;Team All-State and the Rapid City Journal Best of the West LB while playing at Rapid City Central High School.State runner-up and Nebraska 6-Man Football Offensive Player of the Year,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/gage-mintken/9558">Gage Mintken</a>, will travel the 21 miles west from Hay Springs to continue his football career at CSC at safety.

By Shamus McKnight NU Athletic CommunicationsJuwan Gary had a team-high 15 points to lead four Huskers in double figures, but Nebraska fell at Northwestern, 80-68, Wednesday evening.Gary scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half but it was not enough as Northwestern hit eight 3-pointers in the first half enroute to building a 16-point halftime lead.Brice Williams had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Jamarques Lawrence and Keisei Tominaga added 12 and 11 points, respectively, as Nebraska fell to 16-8 and 6-7 in Big Ten play.The Huskers shot 45 percent and went 18-of-22 from the foul line, but 17 turnovers led to 26 Northwestern points.Boo Buie had 17 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to lead four Wildcats (16-7, 7-5 Big Ten) in double figures., Ryan Langborg had 18 points, while Brooks Barnhizer added 14 points and 10 boards, as the hosts enjoyed a 36-29 advantage on the glass.The Huskers were unable to withstand a flurry of 3-pointer as Northwestern built a 47-31 halftime lead. The Wildcats hit 8-of-16 from beyond the arc, including 4-of-5 from Buie in the opening 20 minutes.Nebraska was with 16-13 after a Lawrence 3-point play at the 12:11 mark, but the Wildcats took control with a 14-5 spurt over the next four-plus minutes, as Langborg and Ty Berry combined for 12 of the Wildcats’ 14 points in the spurt to give Northwestern its largest lead at the time.Nebraska, which shot 48 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, got to within 33-23 after five straight points from Juwan Gary, who had 13 first-half points, but a 3-point play from Matthew Nicholson and a 3-pointer from Buie quickly stretched the margin back to 16.The Huskers battled back in the second half, cutting a&nbsp;17-point deficit to 12 at 52-40 after a Williams jumper with 16:05 left. NU whittled the Northwestern advantage to 53-42 after Williams’ 3-pointer with 12:59 remaining.Northwestern would respond with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes, as Nick Martinelli scored eight straight points to stretch the Wildcats’ lead to 21 before the Huskers made a run.The Huskers trailed 64-43 before Jamarques Lawrence started a comeback. The sophomore had six straight points in a 7-0 spurt that pulled NU with 64-50 with 6:35 left and forced a Wildcat timeout.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Huskers continued to battle and got it within 12, at 67-55 after a Lawrence free throw with 4:41 left.Nebraska would continue to battle and got to within nine on two occasions in the final minutes, the las at 77-68 after a pair of Rienk Mast free throws with 54.3 seconds remaining, but could get no closer.The Huskers return home on Saturday to take on the Michigan Wolverines. Tipoff from a sold out Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 5:30 p.m. and the game will be carried on the Huskers Radio Network and televised on BTN.
