CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State volleyball opened the RMAC season with a straight sets loss to Colorado School of Mines Friday night in the Chicoine Center – 24-26, 16-25, 22-25.  

The Eagles (2-7, 0-1 RMAC) hung within a couple points of Mines (4-5, 1-0 RMAC) in two of the three sets, but ultimately couldn't replicate their five-set comeback win over the Orediggers from a season ago. 

Alejandra Briseno led Chadron State with 12 kills while Alondra Hernandez and Avery Lacy had 11 digs apiece. Freshman Mataya Ward contributed six kills, a .545 hitting percentage, two service aces and a block in her Chicoine Center debut. 

The Eagles hit .168 as a team, but that percentage was done in by a second set where CSC had nine kills against 10 errors. The Eagles hit .244 in the first set and .308 in the third. 

In the first set, Mines used an 8-2 scoring run to open up a 16-11 lead, but the Eagles answered with an 8-3 run of their own, as back-to-back kills from Natali Keni and Aiyana Fujiyama made it 19-19 in set one. The Eagles also saved two set points thanks to a couple of Mines attack errors, which tied the score at 24-24, before the Orediggers came back with a kill and an ace to ice the set. 

Mines controlled the second set from the first serve, opening up 4-1, 10-5 and 19-11 leads on their way to a 25-16 second-set win. The Orediggers hit .333 in that set, with 12 kills against just one error. 

The Eagles had their best offensive set in the third, racking up 16 kills on a .308 percentage. For a moment, Chadron looked poised to win the set with a 20-17 lead, but Mines won eight of the match's final 10 points, including a critical successful challenge which turned a tie game into a two-point Oredigger lead, to turn the tables and earn the sweep. 

For Mines, Hannah Kinnison had a 12-kill, 14-dig double-double, leading the Orediggers in both categories. Mines hit .306 for the game and had nine blocks and 47 kills.

🏈 Week 4 Western Nebraska Prep Football Scores

Lincoln - In a prime-time showdown between unbeaten top-25 teams, No. 24 Illinois made plays on both sides of the ball in overtime to hand No. 22 Nebraska its first loss of the season on Friday night.

Playing in front of the 400th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium with 86,936 fans on hand and a FOX national TV audience, the Huskers suffered a 31-24 loss after taking a 24-17 lead on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Nebraska slipped to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten, while Illinois improved to 4-0 and 1-0 in the conference.

Dylan Raiola's one-yard touchdown pass to Janiran Bonner was Raiola's third scoring strike of the night, as the freshman completed 24-of-35 passes for 297 yards, including a pair of touchdowns to Isaiah Neyor. The transfer wide receiver finished with four catches for 90 yards in the game, including a 44-yard catch on NU's final scoring drive. 

Fellow transfer Jahmal Banks led the Big Red with eight catches for 94 yards, while tight end Thomas Fidone II added two catches for a career-high 46 yards, including a career-long 29-yard catch on NU's go-ahead drive to open the final period.

Following Nebraska's go-ahead score, the Illini answered with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a six-yard pass from Luke Altmyer to Brandon Harrison with 10:36 left. 

Nebraska's ensuing drive was filled with mistakes, but the Blackshirts stepped up as Ceyair Wright forced a fumble by Altmyer that was recovered by Mikai Gbayor on the Illini's next drive. 

Raiola and the offense moved the ball 41 yards to the Illinois 21, thanks in part to 18 yards on four carries from Dante Dowdell early in the drive. Dowdell led all rushers in the game with 72 yards on 20 totes.

The Huskers faced a 3rd-and-3 at the Illinois 21, when Raiola saw Luke Lindenmeyer come free behind the Illini defense in the end zone, but Raiola's pass was too long for Lindenmeyer to reach. The Huskers attempted a 39-yard field goal, but John Hohl missed the kick wide left to leave the game tied at 24 with just under three minutes remaining.

The Illini took over and picked up two quick first downs on the ground, before the Blackshirts stiffened to force a punt on 4th-and-9 from the NU 48. Nebraska started deep inside its own 10-yard line with 26 seconds left and chose to run out the clock and head to overtime.

Nebraska won the toss and chose to defend, but the Blackshirts surrendered a 21-yard run by Kaden Feagin on the first play of overtime. The next play resulted in Altmyer's fourth touchdown pass of the game with a four-yard connection to Pat Bryant. For Bryant, who led Illinois with five receptions for 74 yards, it was his second touchdown catch of the game. 

Altmyer finished the game with 215 yards on 21-of-27 passing, while adding 10 carries for 21 yards, despite a pair of Husker sacks. Feagin led the Illinois rushing attack with 69 yards on 12 carries, while Josh McCray contributed 38 yards on nine carries.

Nebraska's attempt to answer in overtime was unsuccessful, including a false start and three sacks of Raiola, as the Huskers lost their eighth consecutive overtime game dating back to 2014. Raiola had only been sacked twice in regulation, matching the two sacks suffered by Altmyer and the Illini.

After an entertaining first half, Nebraska took a 17-10 lead to the locker room following Raiola's 11-yard touchdown pass to Neyor with 16 seconds left. It was the second touchdown grab of the half by Neyor, who also scored NU's first touchdown in the middle of the end zone to put the Big Red up 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Neyor's highlight reel catch on the Husker sideline in the end zone capped a nine-play, 70-yard drive that consumed 3:06 and also featured a 27-yard pass from Raiola to Banks to convert a crucial 3rd-and-6 from the Illinois 38. 

It was the fifth catch of the half by Banks, who finished with 61 receiving yards in the opening 30 minutes. 

Raiola finished the half with 156 yards while completing 16-of-23 with two touchdowns. He and Neyor both had a third touchdown wiped off the books midway through the second quarter. Raiola hooked up with Neyor on a 36-yard strike that was ruled a touchdown initially on the field after Neyor was in possession of both the ball across the goal line and his foot down in the end zone as he was falling to the turf. However, the Illini's Torrie Cox Jr. continued to fight for the ball as Neyor went to the ground in the middle of the end zone near the Husker sideline. Cox took the ball from Neyor and replay overturned the touchdown, keeping the game tied at 10 until Raiola and Neyor's final connection of the half. 

Dowdell also had a strong first half, carrying 13 times for 54 yards to power a Nebraska running game that put up 79 yards on the ground, including 13 from Neyor to set up his first touchdown catch. Rahmir Johnson added three carries for 13 yards in the opening half.

Illinois looked sharp to open the game, stopping Nebraska's opening drive after allowing one first down, before marching 78 yards in just eight plays capped by Altmyer's 27-yard touchdown pass to Bryant. The scoring strike gave the Fighting Illini a 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the game.

Raiola and the Huskers answered with an 18-play, 72-yard drive that chewed up 8:39 on the clock, but Nebraska settled for a 21-yard field goal by Hohl to cut the Illinois lead to 7-3 with 3:15 left in the first period.

The Blackshirst then came up with a big play, as John Bullock forced a fumble after Altmyer's 14-yard completion to Hank Beatty. DeShon Singleton recovered the fumble to set Raiola and the offense up at the Illinois 37. Bullock led the Blackshirts with nine tackles, while Singleton, Wright, Gbayor and MJ Sherman all added six stops.

Dowdell quickly chewed up 18 yards on two carries, before Neyor's 13-yard run to set up Raiola's six-yard scoring strike to him to give NU a 10-7 lead. Illinois answered with a 26-yard field goal after an eight-play, 62-yard drive to tie the game at 10.

For the game, Nebraska finished with 345 total yards, but was set back 25 yards in overtime after closing regulation with 370 yards. The Huskers finished regulation with 86 yards, but the three sacks of Raiola went for minus-38 rushing yards. The Huskers were also flagged nine times for 89 yards in the game, compared to just three penalties for 20 yards by Illinois.

Illinois finished with 381 total yards after producing 356 in regulation. The Illini produced 166 rushing yards.

Nebraska makes its first road trip of the season next Saturday, when the Huskers travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to face Purdue. Kick-off against the Boilermakers is set for 11 a.m. (CT).

Huskers fall in Overtime to Illinois

Nebraska head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/staff/matt-rhule">Matt Rhule</a>&nbsp;met with members of the media following Wednesday’s practice. He spoke on adjusting to gametime decisions and maintaining energy going into Friday night’s game.&nbsp;

“One thing we try to teach the players is that you prepare through the event,” he said. “It’s an old Al Golden saying when I used to work for him; the hay is in the barn. We don’t believe that. As you get in the game, you see how they’re playing and you try to adjust. We have a lot of work to do, but so far the guys have worked hard. We’ll keep trying to pick up steam heading into the game on Friday night.”&nbsp;

Rhule talked about being able to get many players involved on offense.

“We’ve thrown a lot of drop-back,” he said. “So when you throw drop-back, it’s progression one, two, three. You can get touches to guys by calling screens and things, which we do some of that. Let’s get the ball to this guy, get the ball to that guy. Last game we came out, we had a lot of tempo drop-back. Dylan’s pretty good at that. When you go to drop-back passes, the ball finds the open receiver. They pressured us and he threw the hot swing route. They blitzed us, he threw the glance to Isaiah (Neyor). It’s a good challenge to have, there’s only one ball. It’s hard to get everyone involved, I’m sure a ton of guys want to touch the ball more. I thought the wideouts played really well last week. They got open, the ball came to them. Dylan’s not afraid to work his way through all the progressions. He’s hit the fifth progression a couple times which is great to see.”&nbsp;

He also discussed the number of carries he’d like each running back to have.

“Every game is different,” he said. “Last game, I didn’t see the need to put a ton of carries on Dante (Dowdell) with a short week coming up, or our staff didn’t, and that’s pretty high level thinking by those guys. This game is different. As I’ve said, I’d like to have one guy in the low twenties, one guy around 15. We’re not running the quarterback, so you’re running some other guys, and obviously, you have to incorporate the receivers a little bit into the run game. As the game plays, we’re facing a team that has an elite run defense. They’re also an elite pass defense. They’re just an elite defense. Each game is a little different, we’ll see what we need to do in each game to win.”

NU will face off against the Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. (CT) at Memorial Stadium. The game will be broadcast on FOX, with radio coverage by the Huskers Radio Network.

Football report September 19th

East Lansing, Mich.&nbsp;- In her first game back from competing for Team Canada at the U20 World Cup, junior Sadie Waite breaks #5 Michigan State’s shutout streak, but it was not enough as the Nebraska soccer team fell to MSU 4-1 on Thursday night.

The Huskers battled, but with the loss fell to 3-5-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State improved to 7-0-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference.&nbsp;

The Huskers opened the first half aggressively earning a corner kick within the first two minutes, but it was Michigan State who found the back of the net first. After a shot off the mark from Ella Guyott, the Spartans ran the pitch and Meg Hughes took a shot that scored off an assist from Gabby Mueller.&nbsp;

MSU held the Huskers shotless for the next 20 minutes before Waite tied the game with a finish off the crossbar in the 43rd minute. Sarah Weber passed into the box, which was deflected by the Spartan defense, rebounded by Emma Prososki and sent to Waite who took a shot that bounced off the frame and past the goal line for the score. This finish marked the first goal of the season for Waite and sixth of her career, and was the first score MSU had allowed since September 1 at home against #15 Xavier.&nbsp;

The tie didn’t last long with Michigan State scoring again a minute later, as Emily Mathews tallied a finish off an assist from Remini Tillotson. To end the first half, three Huskers combined for four shots, but MSU held the offensive advantage.&nbsp;

Weber and Florence Belzile combined for four shots in the second half, one on goal by Belzile, but it was not enough as Michigan State continued its strong offensive attack. The Spartans scored goals in the 69th and 79th minutes from Jordyn Wickes and Ella Janz and secured the 4-1 victory.&nbsp;

Story by NU Athletic CommunicationsEast Lansing, Mich.&nbsp;- In her first game back from competing for Team Canada at the U20 World Cup, junior Sadie Waite breaks #5 Michigan State’s shutout streak, but it was not enough as the Nebraska soccer team fell to MSU 4-1 on Thursday night.The Huskers battled, but with the loss fell to 3-5-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State improved to 7-0-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference.&nbsp;The Huskers opened the first half aggressively earning a corner kick within the first two minutes, but it was Michigan State who found the back of the net first. After a shot off the mark from Ella Guyott, the Spartans ran the pitch and Meg Hughes took a shot that scored off an assist from Gabby Mueller.&nbsp;MSU held the Huskers shotless for the next 20 minutes before Waite tied the game with a finish off the crossbar in the 43rd minute. Sarah Weber passed into the box, which was deflected by the Spartan defense, rebounded by Emma Prososki and sent to Waite who took a shot that bounced off the frame and past the goal line for the score. This finish marked the first goal of the season for Waite and sixth of her career, and was the first score MSU had allowed since September 1 at home against #15 Xavier.&nbsp;The tie didn’t last long with Michigan State scoring again a minute later, as Emily Mathews tallied a finish off an assist from Remini Tillotson. To end the first half, three Huskers combined for four shots, but MSU held the offensive advantage.&nbsp;Weber and Florence Belzile combined for four shots in the second half, one on goal by Belzile, but it was not enough as Michigan State continued its strong offensive attack. Hershey fell to a tough GICC team last Friday by a score 37-8. The Panthers recorded 164 rushing yards and added 11 yards through the air. Landon Kennicutt had a team high 57 yards while Cole Murdock recorded 48 yards. Hershey runs a triple option.

Rhodee Hill recorded 17 tackles in the game with J.T. Lantis finishing with 8 and Kennicutt and Max Berntson finished with six. Hershey is led by Chris Stier, who is entering his first year at the helm for the Panthers. Stier is the former head coach of Springfield-Platteview from 2014-2019.&nbsp;

Lincoln , Neb - Nebraska sophomore setter Bergen Reilly was named Big Ten Setter of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced.

Reilly earned her second award of the season and the sixth of her career.&nbsp;

The Sioux Falls, S.D., native led the Huskers to a 3-0 record and a pair of top-15 wins last week. Reilly averaged 12.18 assists per set, 3.45 digs per set, and led the Big Red to a .315 team hitting percentage. Reilly had a career-high 58 assists with 13 digs in a 3-2 win against No. 9 Creighton last Tuesday. She also had double-doubles of 41 assists and 15 digs against No. 14 Arizona State, and 35 assists and 10 digs against Wichita State.

For the season, Reilly is averaging 11.48 assists per set, which ranks third in the country. She also has seven double-doubles in nine matches. Last season, Reilly didn't record her seventh double-double until Oct. 27.&nbsp;

Reilly Earns Big Ten Setter of the Week

KEARNEY, Neb. – Chadron State volleyball won its second consecutive match and earned its first sweep of the 2024 season with a decisive win over Missouri Southern, but closed out the Rosella Meier Fall Classic with a straight sets loss to hosts Nebraska Kearney, the No. 6-ranked team in the nation. 

The Eagles (2-6) rolled over Missouri Southern (0-8) by set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-23, but had no answer for the nationally-ranked Lopers (9-0), falling to UNK 25-13, 25-16, 25-13. The Lopers have yet to drop a set in their nine victories this season. 

Newcomer and junior outside hitter Alejandra Briseno had a total of 22 kills on the day and has now led the Eagles in kills in three straight matches. Briseno, a native of Mexico who previously played at Hutchison Community College in Kansas, had 15 kills and hit .310 during the win over Missouri Southern, then had seven kills while hitting .278 against Kearney. 

Senior middle Maddison Wright (six kills, .417 hitting percentage) and junior middle Bella Adams (six kills, no errors, .375 hitting percentage) also excelled against Missouri Southern. As a team, the Eagles racked up 42 kills against just eight errors against the Lions, including a first set where CSC hit .325 as a team with only one error. 

The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 start immediately in that first set, taking advantage of three MSSU attack errors plus a service ace from Avery Lacy. With an 11-7 lead, Chadron ripped off a 5-0 run with a kill from Aiyana Fujiyama followed by two kills from Briseno sandwiched around back-to-back aces from Lacy, who finished with four aces in the match. 

Chadron fell behind 6-3 early in the second set, but chipped away and took the lead with back-to-back-to-back kills from Kally Kirkwood, Wright and Rylee Ward to make it 10-9, CSC. After Missouri Southern took a narrow 14-13 lead, Chadron rattled off the next six points, featuring two kills from Bella Adams, to take control with a 19-14 lead and winning the final three points of the set to go up 2-0 in the match. 

Missouri Southern hung around and kept the third set close, but the Lions were hurt by 23 attack errors in the game, including nine apiece in each of the final two sets. Briseno punctuated the match with her 15th kill on CSC's second match point to secure a 25-23 win in set three and run Chadron State's win streak to two. 

Unfortunately, the Eagles couldn't convert that momentum into much against Nebraska Kearney, the first ranked opponent CSC has faced so far this season. The Lopers hit over .400 as a team in all three sets and hit .459 for the match. Briseno had seven kills while Kally Kirkwood and Fujiyama had six each. 

After eight matches away from Chadron, the Eagles will play in the Chicoine Center for the first time this upcoming weekend, which will also open up RMAC play. Chadron State will welcome Colorado School of Mines (3-5) on Friday night and MSU Denver (7-1) on Saturday, with both matches scheduled for 6 p.m.

🏐 Chadron State closes out UNK event with win over Missouri Southern

The Hemingford girls and the Custer boys won the team titles at the Chadron High School Cross Country Meet held Friday on Chadron State College’s challenging course.&nbsp; Both the boys and the girls ran five kilometers.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Neither of the winning teams had previously participated in the meet this decade.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Taylor Harrelson of Rapid City Christian was the girls’ individual winner and Trevor Zurn of Alliance took the boys’ gold medal.&nbsp; Both are sophomores, who finished second and third, respectively, in their races a year ago, but improved their times significantly and won top honors Friday.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Harrelson’s winning time was 21:33.94, about 74 seconds faster than her mark last year.&nbsp; Zurn completed this year’s race in 16:55.37, a minute and 53 seconds better than his time of a year ago.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Harrelson also was fourth in the Chadron race in 2022, when she was an 8th&nbsp;grader.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This year’s runner-up among the girls was Dakota Horstman, a Hemingford junior who led her team’s impressive victory.&nbsp; Her time was 22:06.49. Teammates Aurora Hinman and Ainslee Woltman were fourth and sixth, respectively, while Teagan Thompson was 14th&nbsp;to round out Hemingford’s winning quartet.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kylee Kampfe of Sidney was third in 22:34.11. That’s 75 seconds faster than her time of a year ago when she placed fifth for the first place Lady Raiders.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gordon-Rushville’s Kynsleigh Krebs and Ashlyn Denning finished fifth and seventh, respectively, and teammate Rylie Barker was 15th&nbsp;this year.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron’s leaders were Jentsyn Fuller and Lillie Uhing, who placed 11th&nbsp;and 12th&nbsp;at their home meet. Another of the Cardinals, Ave Pyle, was 17th&nbsp;among the 67 girls in the race.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gering sophomore Axton Stone was the runner-up in boys’ race Friday in 17:03.75. That’s 52 seconds faster than his winning time of a year ago. Sean Shipp of Custer, the pacesetter for the winning team, placed third in 17:16.88, almost a minute ahead of fourth place Asher Saka of Alliance.&nbsp; However, Saka’s time this year was 80 seconds faster than his mark of a year ago when he finished ninth at the Chadron meet.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hemingford’s Austin Benda was sixth in the boys’ race, followed by three Custer Wildcats, who crossed the finish line just a second and a half apart to help nab the team title.

Parker Wellnitz of Hay Springs was 10th&nbsp;this year after placing 11th&nbsp;a year ago.&nbsp; But his time was about a minute and a half faster Friday.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There were 104 boys in this year’s race, 30 more than a year ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

By: Con MarshallThe Hemingford girls and the Custer boys won the team titles at the Chadron High School Cross Country Meet held Friday on Chadron State College’s challenging course.&nbsp; Both the boys and the girls ran five kilometers.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Neither of the winning teams had previously participated in the meet this decade.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Taylor Harrelson of Rapid City Christian was the girls’ individual winner and Trevor Zurn of Alliance took the boys’ gold medal.&nbsp; Both are sophomores, who finished second and third, respectively, in their races a year ago, but improved their times significantly and won top honors Friday.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Harrelson’s winning time was 21:33.94, about 74 seconds faster than her mark last year.&nbsp; Zurn completed this year’s race in 16:55.37, a minute and 53 seconds better than his time of a year ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Harrelson also was fourth in the Chadron race in 2022, when she was an 8th&nbsp;grader.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This year’s runner-up among the girls was Dakota Horstman, a Hemingford junior who led her team’s impressive victory.&nbsp; Her time was 22:06.49. Teammates Aurora Hinman and Ainslee Woltman were fourth and sixth, respectively, while Teagan Thompson was 14th&nbsp;to round out Hemingford’s winning quartet.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kylee Kampfe of Sidney was third in 22:34.11. Hemingford & Custer take Chadron X-Country gold

Gering, Neb. - The (1-1) Alliance Bulldogs will hit the road for the second straight week as they will travel 53 minutes to Gering to take on the (2-0) Gering Bulldogs.&nbsp;Pregame coverage is set to begin at 6:30pm with kickoff set for 7:00pm. Listen to the contest on KCOW radio.&nbsp;

The Bulldogs are coming off 43-15 loss to a tough Holdrege Dusters team. Alliance rushed for 157 yards and tacked on 120 yards through the air. Leading the rushing attack was sophomore Trini Trejo with 100 yards and junior quarterback Jett Herian threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns. The top receiver was junior Espn Lanik with 6 receptions for 68 yards while freshman Caysen Robertson caught two passes for 40 yards and one touchdown and junior Carson Swenson caught a 12-yard pass in the endzone.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Defensively, junior Cole Stoike had a team high 15 tackles, Robertson finished with 14 and one tackle for loss. Eladio Campos had 6 tackles. Lanik would also record an interception while playing defense in Friday's contest against the Dusters.&nbsp;

Gering is 2-0 for the first time since 2012 and defeated Mitchell 40-26. Four different ball carriers would rush for a combined 300 yards and five touchdowns. Leading the rush attack was Junior Rece Knight who finished with 145 yards and three touchdowns. Knight would also throw for 125 yards. Junior Bo Gable finished with 92 yards on the ground.&nbsp;

Through the air, Knight's top target was senior Barron Williams who recorded five catches for 82 yards. Gable would finish the game with 26 receiving yards.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gable led the defense with 15 tackles in the contest. Junior Tyler Fry and senior Creighton Beals recorded 13 tackles and Williams finished with 12.&nbsp;&nbsp;

These two Bulldog teams last met in 2020 where Gering was victorious 30-7. Since 2004, these teams have met 18 times where Alliance holds an 11-7 record.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chadron's only cross country meet of the season will take place Friday (Sept. 13) on the Chadron State College course.&nbsp; Sponsored by Chadron High School, the meet is expected to once again draw many of the Panhandle’s cross country teams and individuals. A few entries from South Dakota also are anticipated.&nbsp; The action will begin at 10 a.m.

Nebraska (3-3-0) opens conference play on Thursday, Sept. 12 as it travels to Iowa to face the #17 Hawkeyes (4-0-2). The 18th meeting between the two teams is set for 7 p.m. (CT) and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.&nbsp;

The Huskers continue their road-match streak, facing Michigan State on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. (CT) and Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 12 p.m. (CT). Action against the Spartans will air on BTN, while the match against the Wolverines will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 <li>Sarah Weber, a 2024 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, recorded her second career hat trick against Creighton. It’s the 36th hat trick in school history and second of the 2024 season for Weber.&nbsp;</li><li>Weber is also fourth in school history with 280 total shots, sitting just behind Morgan Marlborough (287) in third, and ninth in shots on goal with 114, nine behind Brittany Timko in eighth. Additionally, Weber currently leads the country in shots per game, as she is averaging 5.83 and 11th in total goals with six.&nbsp;</li><li>Florence Belzile is currently ninth all-time in Husker history with 25 career assists, just two shy of Lindsay Eddleman in eighth. Jordan Zade, the team’s assists leader, has four on the season and is 30th nationally in assists per game.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>The Huskers have 10 regular-season home games scheduled for their 10th season at Hibner Stadium in 2024.&nbsp;</li><li>NU returns three of four All-Big Ten performers from last season, seniors Weber, Haley Peterson and Zade. Nebraska’s all-time all-conference total increased to 110, including 38 honorees since joining the Big Ten in 2011.</li><li>During the 2023 season, the Huskers averaged 1,326 fans per game at Hibner Stadium, third most in Husker history and 15th in the nation. The Hawkeyes qualified for the NCAA Tournament and defeated Bucknell in the opening round before falling to Georgia in the second round.&nbsp;</li><li>The Hawkeyes are undefeated on the season and have secured four shutouts, with quality wins over Wake Forest and Baylor. LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team won a 3-2 thriller against No. 9 Creighton on Tuesday night, 25-19, 25-16, 31-33, 16-25, 15-10, in front of a crowd of 8,924 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.&nbsp;

Nebraska improved to 6-1 on the season while Creighton suffered its first loss to fall to 5-1.&nbsp;

The Huskers were balanced offensively with Harper Murray (16 kills), Andi Jackson (15 kills), Lindsay Krause (15 kills) and Merritt Beason (14 kills) leading the way. Murray had a double-double with her 16 kills and 14 digs, and Jackson had career highs in both kills (15) and blocks (8) while hitting .379. Krause added five blocks, and Beason hit .306. Rebekah Allick chipped in nine kills and hit .333.&nbsp;

Bergen Reilly had a career-high 57 assists to go with 13 digs, three blocks and three kills. Lexi Rodriguez put up a season-best 21 digs. Laney Choboy added 12, and Olivia Mauch had seven.&nbsp;

Nebraska had a .234 hitting percentage in the match, and Creighton hit .209.&nbsp;

Norah Sis had 24 kills and 11 digs for Creighton. Ava Martin totaled 17 kills and 17 digs.&nbsp;

Set 1: A 4-0 run put the Huskers up 8-4. Jackson had two kills and a block with Murray, who also had a kill. After Creighton got a sideout kill, Reilly dumped a kill to the floor, Jackson and Krause combined for a block, and Murray served an ace to make it 11-5 Huskers. Kills by Krause and Murray made it 13-6 NU, but Creighton scored three in a row to cut it to 13-9. A kill by Beason preceded a kill by Murray on the longest rally of the set, and NU led 17-10. Two more kills by Jackson and Murray and a block by Jackson and Krause made it 21-13 Big Red. The Bluejays pulled within 22-17, but Krause connected for a kill and Creighton hit out for set point. The Huskers won 25-19, hitting .250 and holding Creighton to .100.&nbsp;

Set 2: Creighton held a 5-3 lead when kills by Murray and Jackson tied the score. Three blocks in a row by the Big Red made it 9-7 with Reilly and Allick contributing on two of them. Allick added a kill as the Huskers pushed their advantage to 12-8. Allick and Jackson struck three straight kills, and Jackson and Murray posted a block as the Huskers went up 18-11. Creighton went on a 4-1 spurt to pull within 19-15, but Jackson posted a sideout kill and Krause tacked on another as the Huskers built the lead to 23-15 after the 4-0 run. Allick put the set away, 25-16, with her sixth kill. NU hit .333 and held the Jays to .032.&nbsp;

Set 3: Nebraska's first lead of the set came at 11-10 after Murray rolled a shot to the floor, and Krause followed with an ace. After Creighton regained the lead, Jackson, Murray and Krause posted four straight kills, and Krause and Allick combined for a block and a 20-16 lead. Nebraska led 23-21, but Sis produced back-to-back kills, and Martin added one for set point for Creighton, 24-23. Murray came up big with her ninth kill to tie the score 24-24, but Martin rolled a kill to the floor for another set point. An incredible defensive effort to keep a ball alive at the net led to another kill by Murray, and on the next rally Murray tipped a kill for match point, 26-25. Creighton turned to Martin again for a kill and a 26-26 tie, but Reilly set Krause for a 27-26 match point. A Creighton block made it 27-27, and the Huskers mishandled a Creighton serve to put the Jays back on top, 28-27. Krause stepped up once again for the Big Red with her 11th kill to tie it 28-28, and Creighton touched the net to make it 29-28 Huskers. Then Sis tied the score at 29-29 with her 16th kill, but a back-row kill from Murray earned match point No. 4 for the Big Red. The Bluejays then posted a block and got a kill from Sis to make it 31-30, but Allick answered with a kill to tie it 31-31. However, Sis and Martin recorded back-to-back kills to give Creighton the 33-31 win.&nbsp;

Set 4: Creighton bolted to a 7-3 advantage as Nebraska called timeout. Creighton led 10-5 before kills by Jackson and Murray helped get NU within 11-8. But the Jays answered with a 5-0 run to go up 16-8. Creighton won the set, 25-16, to force a set five for the third time in the history of the series. Creighton hit .306 in the set and held NU to -.024. &nbsp;

Set 5: With Reilly serving to open the set, Krause terminated a kill before Allick hammered down an overpass, and another kill by Krause made it 3-0 Huskers. A Creighton service error and a kill by Beason put NU ahead 5-1. Allick, Jackson and Reilly tallied kills to take NU to an 8-4 lead as the teams changed sides. Reilly and Murray added kills for a 10-5 lead before Creighton scored two in a row to cut it to 10-7. But Krause's 15th kill made it 11-7. A kill by Beason kept NU in front, 13-9, and Jackson terminated her 15th kill for match point, 14-9. Murray's 16th kill ended the five-set thriller, 15-10.&nbsp;
