The Alliance Bulldogs girls and basketball teams have their final basketball doubleheader games this weekend, starting tonight (Friday) at Dundy-County-Stratton and then at Lexington on Saturday.

The Bulldogs girls are currently in the chase for one of the final seeds in the Class B District Finals. Alliance is 7-14 and with a pair of wins this weekend could set themselves up for a run to the District Final if they have a good showing at the Sub-District round. They take on a D-C-S team that one of the better small school teams in Southern Nebraska who at 11-11 had a two-game winning streak snapped in a loss to 23-1 Southern Valley.

On the boys side, the Tigers are 17-5 while Alliance is 5-15. The Bulldogs have played a brutal schedule, but are hoping for a strong showing this weekend against both Dundy-County-Stratton and Lexington.

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. --&nbsp;The Chadron State College football team added 40 incoming freshmen to its roster on Wednesday, the official National Signing Day for Division II football. Of the 40 signees, 11 hail from Nebraska, 11 are from Colorado, seven call Wyoming home and the other 11 currently live in Montana, Utah, Illinois, Arizona, Florida, Texas, California and South Dakota, including walk-ons. &nbsp;"Our focus this year was on improving the size of our team," Head Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/jay-long/503">Jay Long</a>&nbsp;said.

"We recruited 24 student athletes over 6'2.The group contains five defensive linemen and linebackers, six safeties and one corner defensively. On offense, four wide receivers, three tight ends and running backs, one quarterback and 13 offensive linemen join the Eagles."It takes a ton of time, people and effort to recruit one student-athlete," Long said. 

"I would like to thank our campus, professors, admission staff, our team, coaches and athletic department for providing the effort of showing these young men how special of a place Chadron State College is."The lone South Dakota signee is a 6-1, 220-pound linebacker,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/gideon-waldrop/9551">Gideon Waldrop</a>. Waldrop was named 1st&nbsp;Team All-State and the Rapid City Journal Best of the West LB while playing at Rapid City Central High School.State runner-up and Nebraska 6-Man Football Offensive Player of the Year,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/gage-mintken/9558">Gage Mintken</a>, will travel the 21 miles west from Hay Springs to continue his football career at CSC at safety.

Juwan Gary had a team-high 15 points to lead four Huskers in double figures, but Nebraska fell at Northwestern, 80-68, Wednesday evening.

Gary scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half but it was not enough as Northwestern hit eight 3-pointers in the first half enroute to building a 16-point halftime lead.

Brice Williams had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Jamarques Lawrence and Keisei Tominaga added 12 and 11 points, respectively, as Nebraska fell to 16-8 and 6-7 in Big Ten play.

The Huskers shot 45 percent and went 18-of-22 from the foul line, but 17 turnovers led to 26 Northwestern points.

Boo Buie had 17 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to lead four Wildcats (16-7, 7-5 Big Ten) in double figures., Ryan Langborg had 18 points, while Brooks Barnhizer added 14 points and 10 boards, as the hosts enjoyed a 36-29 advantage on the glass.

The Huskers were unable to withstand a flurry of 3-pointer as Northwestern built a 47-31 halftime lead. The Wildcats hit 8-of-16 from beyond the arc, including 4-of-5 from Buie in the opening 20 minutes.

Nebraska was with 16-13 after a Lawrence 3-point play at the 12:11 mark, but the Wildcats took control with a 14-5 spurt over the next four-plus minutes, as Langborg and Ty Berry combined for 12 of the Wildcats’ 14 points in the spurt to give Northwestern its largest lead at the time.

Nebraska, which shot 48 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, got to within 33-23 after five straight points from Juwan Gary, who had 13 first-half points, but a 3-point play from Matthew Nicholson and a 3-pointer from Buie quickly stretched the margin back to 16.

Northwestern would respond with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes, as Nick Martinelli scored eight straight points to stretch the Wildcats’ lead to 21 before the Huskers made a run.The Huskers trailed 64-43 before Jamarques Lawrence started a comeback. The sophomore had six straight points in a 7-0 spurt that pulled NU with 64-50 with 6:35 left and forced a Wildcat timeout.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Huskers continued to battle and got it within 12, at 67-55 after a Lawrence free throw with 4:41 left.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The Chadron State College men's basketball team led 38-28 at halftime, but managed only 22 points in the second half and was edged 63-60 Wednesday night by Colorado Christian in Lakewood.

Apparently because he was ill, the Eagles played without guard Bryce Latimer, their floor leader and top scorer at 18.8 points a game. Several other regulars scored below their averages and the visitors came up short.

With five seconds on the clock, the officials studied the video for several minutes to determine which team should have possession after the ball was knocked out of bounds, the Eagles had a chance to send the game into overtime. But a 3-point volley at the buzzer did not connect.

Chadron State got a boost from 6-9 John Jenkins, who had missed the last three games because of a knee injury.  He was in the starting lineup, played 26 minutes and scored a team-high 16 points.  Guard Jalen Patterson replaced Latimer as the primary point guard and made five of his eight field goal attempts while scoring 13 points. He also had four assists and just two turnovers.

But no other CSC player had more than seven points. Overall, the Eagles shot just 38.6% (22-57) from the field.

Although never ahead by more than six points, Colorado Christian led the first 10 minutes of the game.  The Eagles outscored the hosts 12-6 during the last five minutes of the half to build their 10-point halftime lead.

The Cougars took the lead for keeps at 56-54 on a pair of free throws by freshman Bradley Land with 6:45 left on the clock.  Christian's biggest margin was five points. Patterson's jumper with 1:55remaining cut the Cougars' lead to 61-60.  Forty-three seconds later, Christian's junior guard Noah Kon drove for a layup that provided the final three-point margin.

Senior guard Jacob Everson led the Cougars with 17 points, Kon finished with 13 and Land 12. The hosts shot 41.7% (25-60) from the field. They are now 9-12 overall and 5-10 in the RMAC.

The Eagles are 11-10 for the season and 8-7 in the conference. They will play Western Colorado in Gunnison on Friday night.

Maggie Hutka, the leading scorer among women in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 20-point average, poured in 30 and two teammates combined for 39 more as the homestanding Colorado Christian Cougars outscored Chadron State 89-76 in Lakewood on Wednesday night.

Each team made 28 field goals, but Christian had nine 3-pointers, two more than the Eagles, and sank 24 of 26 free throws while the visitors were 13-of-19 at the line. Despite the free throw differential, each team was called for 20 fouls.

The Cougars jumped out to a 28-13 first quarter lead, but Chadron State tallied a season-high 33 points in the second frame to hold a 46-44 halftime lead. Christian went ahead with six minutes left in the third period and led the rest of the way.

The Eagles continued to battle and were within six points at 82-76 with 1:35 to play, but did not score again.

Hutka, a 6-1 sophomore, got her 30 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and by going 12-of-13 at the line. She also was the game's high rebounder with 11.

Another sophomore, 5-6 Nicole Bowlin, scored 21 points that included going 5-of-6 on 3-pointers, and senior Regan Loconte added 18 for Christian, now 12-9 for the season and 8-7 in the RMAC. Daiiya Jones also had 11 points for the winners.

Despite the loss, things are looking up for the Eagles.  Veterans Shay Powers and Olivia Waufle returned to action after both had missed several games because of injuries.

Powers finished with 14 points and Waufle with eight points and six rebounds.

Three Eagles besides Powers scored in double figures. Megan Counts had 15 points as well as a team-best seven rebounds. Kylie Krise contributed 11 points and Liberty Line 10.

The CSC women, now 6-14 overall and 4-11 in the conference, will play at Western Colorado in Gunnison on Friday night.

WBB: Colorado Christian wins game of wild swings over CSC

A Nebraska softball program that hasn't won a conference championship in 10 years enters this spring believing it can win a national championship.

A program that couldn't fill its stadium to even half of capacity last year is rushing to add seats and still won't be able to meet ticket demand.

A program that hasn't appeared in the preseason Top 25 since 2015 shows up in all four major polls, between Nos. 13-18, and is the highest-ranked in the Big Ten.

“I know there’s a lot of excitement; that’s not lost on us,” coach Rhonda Revelle said. “I mean, you can’t lie. We’re at practice, there’s construction going on, and they’re trying to accommodate more fans, so it’s not like it’s invisible to us.”

The Cornhuskers bring back all the top players from the 36-22 team that made an NCAA regional for a second straight year. But make no mistake: their sudden popularity is attributable to Bahl.

The two-time All-America pitcher shocked the college softball world last June when, a week after she led Oklahoma to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-softball-oklahoma-florida-state-b9075d910505fdc6d4ddd11c35996972">third straight national championship</a>&nbsp;and was named Most Outstanding Player in the Women’s College World Series, she announced she would&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nebraska-oklahoma-softball-jordy-bahl-e3a8f46d4a53f0c2f1af539a4f2652bc">transfer to her home-state school.</a>

Bahl grew up in the Omaha suburb of Papillion and strongly considered going to Nebraska out of high school before picking the powerhouse Sooners. She went 44-2, won two national titles and was Big 12 pitcher of the year and a first-team All-American each year.

She cited homesickness and a desire to help grow the sport in the state of Nebraska when she announced her decision to leave OU after two years.

Bahl demurred when asked how she handles being in the spotlight in Lincoln.

“I don’t think I’ve ever looked at it that way,” she said. "It’s just our team, and we show up and we go to work every day, and that’s just how it is.”

In the days following her transfer, Nebraska received requests for more than 2,000 new season tickets. The Huskers, who averaged 1,000 fans per game at 2,530-seat Bowlin Stadium last season, immediately made plans to get capacity over 3,000 before the March 1 home opener.

“I think it makes us excited because it just shows how our game is growing, and it’s an awesome feeling to just know that the people of Nebraska are excited to come and watch softball," Bahl said. “And we’re all working really hard to try to make it a fun show to watch.”

Bahl has had no difficulty fitting in. There are six other native Nebraskans on the roster, she was a club teammate with standout shortstop Billie Andrews and knows other players from summer ball.

“She’s a great person off the field, and I think that just bleeds into who she is on the field,” Andrews said. “And we know when we go out there and play, we’ve got her back and she’s got ours. She’s a great addition to this team.”

The Huskers open at a tournament in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on Thursday against Washington, which is ranked as high as No. 7. The pitching matchup could pit Bahl against a fellow Nebraskan in Ruby Meylan, a preseason second-team All-American from Omaha.

The Huskers will play another nationally ranked team in Duke on Friday, and they have nonconference games later this month against Top 25 opponents and future Big Ten members UCLA and Oregon.

It's a schedule designed to prepare the Huskers for conference play and beyond.

“Our goal," Bahl said, “is to be the last team standing."

Jordy Bahl's move to Nebraska creates overwhelming softball ticket demand and national title hopes

The Alliance Bulldogs knew they had a tough test on Tuesday, hosting 20-0 and C-1 #1 Sidney, and while the Bulldogs battled and causes issues for Sidney in different areas, the Red Raiders pulled away for a 55-29 win.

The matchup featured two of the best defensive teams in Western Nebraska, but it was Sidney who held Alliance to just seven first half points to build a double-digit lead at halftime.

Credit the Bulldogs for a much better 2nd half with 22 points.&nbsp;

Foul trouble was an issue for both teams in the game as Senior Jaelynne Clarke picked up her 4th foul early in the 3rd quarter. Clarke came back to finish strong with seven points in the 4th. Fellow Senior Ciara Hudson had a big rebounding night with 12 rebounds and six points. Macey Seebohm had five while Addi Weber scored five.

Next up, Alliance (7-14) is at Dundy County-Stratton on Friday evening, with coverage on KCOW starting at 5:30.

High School Basketball: Alliance ladies battles unbeaten Sidney

Ann Arbor, Mich.&nbsp;- Alexis Markowski scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead a tough, total team effort by the Huskers to fight their way to a 65-59 women's basketball victory over Michigan at Crisler Arena on Tuesday night.

Playing on the road on short rest after their toughest loss of the season, the Huskers battled their way to a Big Ten win despite playing without starting point guard Darian White. The Huskers were also working to overcome several nagging injuries to Jaz Shelley, who finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals. She also had several key steals late in the game to hold Michigan to just one field goal in the final four minutes, although she was officially credited with no steals.

Freshman Natalie Potts pitched in 12 points, while fellow freshman Jessica Petrie pitched in seven big points off the bench, including a strong post move with 4:20 left to give Nebraska its biggest lead of the game at 58-53.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the Big Ten, while dropping Michigan to 15-9 and 6-6 in the league. The Huskers also completed the two-game season series sweep of the Wolverines, after Nebraska defeated Michigan 62-43 in Lincoln (Jan. 17).

After trailing 15-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Huskers fell behind 20-11 midway through the second quarter. Maddie Krull then sparked the Huskers with their first three-pointer with 6:54 left in the second after Nebraska missed its first seven threes on the road. Shelley then boosted the Big Red with another three-pointer 22 seconds later.&nbsp;

The Huskers traded baskets with the Wolverines the rest of the half, capped by Logan Nissley's three-point with 55 seconds left in the half to cut Michigan's lead to 29-28 at halftime.

Markowski gave the Huskers their first lead of the night on their opening possession of the second half with her layup 20 seconds into the third period. Potts then scored five straight points, including a three-pointer to put the Huskers up 35-32. A Shelley three-pointer and another Markowski bucket extended the margin to two possessions for the first time for the Big Red at 40-36.

Michigan tied the game immediately with a three-pointer by Jordan Hobbs, who scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter. three minutes later, Hobbs gave Michigan the lead back at 50-48 with 7:10 remaining, before Shelley scored and was fouled with 6:51 left.

Markowski then contributed one of the game's biggest plays with a tip-in putback of Shelley's free throw miss to complete a four-point possession and give the Huskers a 52-50 lead.

The Huskers were also working to overcome several nagging injuries to Jaz Shelley, who finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals. She also had several key steals late in the game to hold Michigan to just one field goal in the final four minutes, although she was officially credited with no steals.Freshman Natalie Potts pitched in 12 points, while fellow freshman Jessica Petrie pitched in seven big points off the bench, including a strong post move with 4:20 left to give Nebraska its biggest lead of the game at 58-53.With the victory, Nebraska improved to 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the Big Ten, while dropping Michigan to 15-9 and 6-6 in the league. The Alliance Bulldogs girls' basketball team is back at home tonight (Tuesday) in the "Dawg Pound" as the 7-13 Bulldogs aim for a strong performance against one the best teams in the state in 20-0 Sidney.

Stephen Crile's team has proven all year that they can compete with and even beat some of the best teams that Western Nebraska has to offer, including signature wins over Chadron and Gordon-Rushville. Alliance was extremely competitive last weekend in losses to Scottsbluff and Rapid City Christian before falling short in both contests.

Sidney is coming off one of their best games of the season on Saturday, when they defeated Scottsbluff 59-26.

This will be the 2nd meeting this season between the two teams, as Sidney got the better of Alliance on Dec. 16 60-34.

Alliance Girls Basketball looks for strong showing against Sidney (KCOW)

(AP) A National Labor Relations Board regional official ruled on Monday that Dartmouth basketball players are employees of the school, clearing the way for an election that would create the first-ever labor union for NCAA athletes.

All 15 members of the Dartmouth men’s basketball team signed a petition in September asking to join Local 560 of the Service Employees International Union, which already represents some other employees at the Ivy League school in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Unionizing would allow the players to negotiate not only over salary but working conditions, including practice hours and travel.

“Because Dartmouth has the right to control the work performed by the Dartmouth men’s basketball team, and the players perform that work in exchange for compensation, I find that the petitioned-for basketball players are employees within the meaning of the (National Labor Relations) Act,” NLRB Regional Director Laura Sacks wrote.

In a statement, Dartmouth basketball player representatives Cade Haskins and Romeo Myrthil called the ruling "a significant step forward for college athletes," adding, “we are excited to see how this decision will impact college sports nationwide.” They also announced plans to form the Ivy League Players Association for basketball players across the league.

“We believe that other athletes will recognize the opportunities this ruling presents and will be inspired to follow suit," the statement said. "This association aims to foster unity, advocate for athletes’ rights and well-being, and create a platform for collaborative decision-making. We look forward to working with our fellow Ivy League athletes to bring positive change to the landscape of college sports and the Ivy League.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-nil-charlie-baker-hearing-senate-83ed8f9e1fb267db1ce5e24d6b79617a">The NCAA</a>&nbsp;and universities across the country have been steadfast in insisting their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-athletes-nil-eb702d33a87bca98084ea492eccdf84c">athletes are students, not employees.</a>&nbsp;College sports leaders have even lobbied Congress for a federal law that would codify that classification as the NCAA faces&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-college-3d98cd455c2ed1c636ce46d8dd322100">a federal lawsuit in Pennsylvania</a>&nbsp;on the subject.

The Service Employees International Union petitioned the labor board on behalf of the Dartmouth players last year. SEIU international president Mary Kay Henry said they remain in full support of the unionization effort.

“This is an historic step forward for economic justice, racial justice, and union rights — not just for college athletes but for millions of young people across our country whose work is not valued like it should be,” she said in a statement.

The case is being closely watched, coming at a time when the NCAA's bedrock amateur athlete model is facing multiple challenges in court.

“It’s the first step to potential employee status for college athletes,” said Gabe Feldman, a sports law professor at Tulane.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dartmouth-basketball-union-employees-47e3269d1af0e8164614bb644046eda0">The school can still appeal</a>&nbsp;the regional director’s decision to the national board, which is what happened when members of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/3d0b541ce6ba44b380fb762e2ecd2641">Northwestern football team held a union election</a>&nbsp;in 2014.

In that case, the ballots were impounded pending a ruling. Now, an election can be held and ballots counted while an appeal is pending. The Northwestern ballots were destroyed after the NLRB, which only governs private employers, decided that allowing the football players at the only private school in the Big Ten would skew the labor market in the conference.

In that case, the NLRB did not address the question of whether the players were employees. All eight Ivy League schools are private and do not grant athletic scholarships. Feldman said that could increase the likelihood the full board will uphold the ruling.

“But on the flip side, if Dartmouth men's basketball players are employees, not only what athletes are not employees, but does this make the music students employees?” Feldman said. “So this may open the door too far?”

There is a complaint before a different NLRB body in California that claims football and basketball&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-college-national-labor-relations-board-fd838566121436f2b54099a0695b36e1">players at Southern California</a>&nbsp;should be deemed employees of the school, the Pac-12 Conference in which they play and the NCAA. That hearing resumes later this month.

In a 2021 memo, the NLRB’s top lawyer said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-business-sports-football-national-labor-relations-board-02a278af8ae90bb18e33770fd5154366">college athletes should be considered employees.</a>

“The freedom to engage in far-reaching and lucrative business enterprises makes players at academic institutions much more similar to professional athletes who are employed by a team to play a sport,” NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo wrote.

During a four-day hearing in October, Dartmouth argued that the players shouldn’t be considered employees because athletics are part of the academic mission of the school, like performing in the orchestra or even playing club sports.

“At Dartmouth, students’ primary objective is learning,” school attorney Joe McConnell said then. “Dartmouth has adopted policies reflecting that students who participate in intercollegiate athletics are students first and athletes second.”

The college also said the men’s basketball program loses money. Attorneys for the players countered that the school’s numbers leave out important and lucrative revenue streams that the basketball team contributes to. What’s more, the players say it’s not whether the team turned a profit: What matters is if the program brings in revenue, and also whether coaches have control over the players.

The collegiate sports model based on amateurism is facing numerous legal and political threats, along with the NLRB ruling. The NCAA is facing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-legal-antitrust-lawsuit-tennessee-virginia-913a630c035f4598212ce6ff950ebeeb">at least six antitrust lawsuits,</a>&nbsp;including one brought last week by attorneys general from Tennessee and Virginia that challenges how recruits can be compensated for name, image and likeness.

The model has been crumbling, most significantly after a 2021 Supreme Court ruling that opened college sports up to additional — though still limited — kinds of pay. In response, the NCAA loosened rules to permitted players to profit from their celebrity.

“I think they’re all different sides to a similar threat,” Feldman said. “And the threat is the loss of control over the ability to restrict compensation to athletes. And we are closer than we’ve ever been to a system where college athletes not only receive significant additional compensation, but also have a vote in how much compensation they receive.”

Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Tony Clark said in a statement that the ruling shows “college athletes are employees, entitled to basic rights and fair compensation for their labor that has created a multibillion-dollar industry.”

“Today’s landmark NLRB ruling will improve the lives of all college athletes for generations to come,” Clark's statement said. “In the history of the sports labor movement, change has always been initiated by the courageous efforts of Players who decided to stand up and demand their fair share.”

Keisei Tominaga scored a career-high 31 points while Nebraska outscored No. 14 Illinois 11-1 in the final 3:28 of regulation to get to overtime before the Illini prevailed 87-84 Sunday evening.&nbsp;

Tominaga finished with a game-high 31 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range while Rienk Mast and Juwan Gary finished with 22 and 12 points, respectively for Nebraska (16-7, 6-6 Big Ten)&nbsp;

Coleman Hawkins led four Illinois (17-5, 8-3) players in double figures with 20 points and seven rebounds. Marcus Domask added 19 points, including a game-tying free throw with 3.1 seconds left in regulation.&nbsp;

The Huskers trailed 72-62 after a 3 pointer from Terrence Shannon Jr. with 3:29 left before mounting a furious comeback.

A 3-pointer from Brice Williams and a layup from Keisei Tominaga with 2:24 pulled Nebraska within 72-67. &nbsp;The Huskers got a stop on the defensive end before Mast was fouled and hit both free throws to make it all three-point game.

On Illinois’ next possession, Gary had a steal and was fouled as he converted both free throws to cut the deficit to one. After a couple of fouls, the Huskers got another steal as Josiah Allick came up with the ball and NU called timeout with 27.4 seconds left.&nbsp;

Gary, who posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards got Williams miss and Mast’s basket with 9.1 seconds remaining gave Nebraska a 73-72 advantage.&nbsp;

Illinois got the ball to Domask on the baseline, and he was fouled with 3.1 seconds left. &nbsp;He made the first to tie it up before missing the second to send the game to overtime. &nbsp;

Nebraska led briefly in the overtime period, as a Gary basket gave NU a 75-74 lead. &nbsp; Illinois responded with five straight points to build a 79-75 lead after Quincey Guerrier’s 3-pointer.&nbsp;

Nebraska would continue to fight as a Tominaga&nbsp;3-pointer and a Mast bucket cut the Illini advantage to 81-80 with 2:40 left on OT.&nbsp;

Nebraska was within 87-84 with under 20 seconds left before Shannon’s steal gave the Illini an opportunity to salt the game away with 1.7 seconds left. &nbsp;Shannon missed both free throws and Tominaga’s heave from 85 feet nearly sent the game to a second overtime.&nbsp;

Illinois came out red hot to open the second half, hitting its first six shots to take a 47-40 lead after a Hawkins 3-pointer just 3:28 into the second half.&nbsp;

Nebraska would regroup, using an 11-5 run to pull within 52-51 after a 3 pointer from Sam Hoiberg.&nbsp;

The Huskers were in striking distance and was within 66-60 before 3 pointers from Hawkins and Shannon stretched the lead to 10 with 3:29 left. Thats when the Huskers mounted the comeback to get the game to OT

In the first half, Nebraska held the Illini to 39.3 percent shooting, as the Huskers led for most of the half and took a 36-34 lead into the locker room.
