After losing 10-9 to Chadron back on Aug 22, the Alliance Bulldogs softball team has won two in a row against their rival and hope to make it three straight on Tuesday at the Hal Murray Sports Complex.

Alliance is 8-10 on the season after beating Chadron on Saturday 5-1. The Cardinals are 5-9 on the season and are looking to even the season series with Alliance with a win tonight. (Tuesday)

Sidney Girls, Gering Boys take titles at CSC Cross Country Invite

Scottsbluff hosted the Western Conference Softball Tournament Saturday, with the four Conference Teams, Alliance, Chadron, Gering and Scottsbluff competing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Teams competed in a round robin style event with each team playing 3 games.&nbsp; The opening round saw Scottsbluff defeat Alliance 16-4&nbsp; and Gering defeated Chadron&nbsp; 18-2.&nbsp; &nbsp;Round 2...Gering defeated&nbsp; Alliance 14- 3 and Chadron defeated Scottsbluff 15-13.&nbsp; &nbsp;Round 3, Gering over Scottsbluff&nbsp; 9-0&nbsp; and Alliance over Chadron 4-1.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Gering was the Conference Champion with a 3-0 record.&nbsp; Alliance, Scottsbluff and Chadron all finished 1-2.&nbsp; The least runs allowed determined 2nd, 3rd and 4th place.&nbsp; Scottsbluff allowed 28 runs to finish in second place.&nbsp; Alliance allowed 31 runs to place 3rd.&nbsp; Chadron allowed 35 runs to finish 4th.&nbsp;

AHS Competes at Western Conference Softball Tournament

DENVER (AP) — The&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1701015264807276738">Sean Payton era</a>&nbsp;in Denver began with an onside kick.

This just looked like more of the same for a franchise that has gone seven seasons without a playoff appearance and six straight without a winning record.

At least the crowd didn’t need to count down the play clock for&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1701017942241235124">Russell Wilson</a>&nbsp;and the offense like it did under Nathaniel Hackett last year. That's some sort of progress.

Beleaguered by costly penalties and special teams blunders, the Broncos opened Payton’s tenure with a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/raiders-broncos-mcdaniels-payton-wilson-garoppolo-fcaf1e56662a76c2ffc693014a458791">17-16 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders</a>&nbsp;on Sunday. That’s seven straight losses to their AFC West adversary.

“We just didn’t execute. End of story,” said defensive back Justin Simmons, whose team had 10 penalties that led to six first downs. “We’ve got to find ways to do that, and we will.”

Payton made his return to the field after spending last season in the broadcast booth for Fox. He's trying&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1700988779245539773">to turn things around</a>&nbsp;following a dismal season under Hackett, who was fired after a 4-11 start in his first heading coaching job.

Electing for the element of surprise, Payton called for an onside kick to begin his Denver debut. It nearly worked, too, with Essang Bassey recovering the ball and celebrating with his teammates and rocking Empower Field.

Only, the ball hit teammate Tremon Smith a yard shy of the requisite 10 yards. So, Las Vegas had a short field to work with and soon went up 7-0 with that 44-yard touchdown drive.

Kicker Wil Lutz missed his first extra point attempt and also a 55-yard field goal attempt. This on a day when the kicker he was replacing, Brandon McManus, was 5-for-5 on extra points and a field goal in Jacksonville's 31-21 win over the Colts.

“My job is to make field goals,” said Lutz, who also kicked for Payton in New Orleans and was acquired from the Saints for a draft pick two weeks ago.

To comfort Lutz, lineman Garett Bolles ventured over and interjected, saying the Broncos love him.

Although the words meant a lot, Lutz quickly countered: "I didn’t hold up my end of the deal today. ... My job is to make kicks and to lose game by one and you leave four points on the board, I didn’t do my job.”

The penalties proved costly, too, including a roughing the passer call and two unnecessary roughness flags.

On the final drive, the Broncos appeared to have stopped the Raiders short after a third-down catch from Jakobi Meyers. But Broncos defensive back Kareem Jackson was flagged for a hit up high on Meyers, who stayed down for a moment before heading to the locker room. The penalty gave the Raiders a first down and when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo scrambled for another first down on third-and-7, it allowed the Raiders to run out the clock.

“Look obviously, disappointing loss,” said Payton, whose team hosts Washington next Sunday. “We didn’t make enough plays.”

The Broncos averaged a league-low 16.9 points last season — and a little over 15 under Hackett, whom&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jets-broncos-nathaniel-hackett-sean-payton-bc4aff1bf1f9a24b65712d1ac59557a2">Payton earlier this summer criticized</a>&nbsp;for doing one of the worst coaching jobs in NFL history, something he later said he regretted bringing up.

Wilson got off to a great start, completing 17 of 19 passes, two for touchdowns, in the first half, for 125 yards. One of those misses was a spike, no less.

A different story in the second half. The loss of tight end Greg Dulcich to a leg injury on the first drive hurt an offense already missing No. 1 receiver Jerry Jeudy (hamstring).

"I thought overall our tempo was decent. I think it can be better,” Payton said. “We were a little sporadic in the second half.”

This, against a Raiders team missing pass rusher Chandler Jones, who’s involved in a feud with the front office. Garoppolo played with precision and poise as he went 20 of 26 for 200 yards. He wasn't sacked once and was hardly even pressured.

“Everyone in the locker room is feeling that grit and that hurt and understanding that it’s not just another game. We have to own this division,” receiver Courtland Sutton said. “It’s not like we went out there and got beat 30-0.”

Maybe that's progress, but Payton was hired to fix an offense that's been touchdown-challenged for a while and has had issues on special teams, neither of which looked much different under his watch.

“The only thing I’m disappointed (about is) we didn’t come up with a win,” Wilson said. "That’s really all that matters and it’s all we really care about.

Raiders spoil Payton's debut in Denver

The Alliance Bulldogs made a statement that they are amongst most improved high school football teams in the state of Nebraska after three games, as Alliance put on an offensive clinic in a 58-34 win over Valentine on Friday night.

Alliance had 524 all-purpose yards, including quarterback Landen Crowe throwing for a career-high 359 yards and five touchdowns, adding one on the ground. He also overcame another interception for a touchdown, his 3rd in as many games.&nbsp; "Landen is who you want to be as your quarterback, Head Coach T.D Stein said.&nbsp; "He's got a short memory which is something I always preach as a former quarterback. the guys follow him, he leads by his effort."

 Tristen Timbers had another monster game with 10 receptions for career highs 190 yards and three touchdowns.&nbsp; Trini Trejo had 0 rushing yards in the first half, but the freshman got going in the second half with 128 yards and two touchdowns.&nbsp;

Defensively, Matt Moomey had some huge plays for the Bulldogs defensive lineman, finishing the game with a sack and two tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery. Jett Herian led Alliance with 11 tackles.

Valentine started out fast with a block punt inside the Alliance five-yard line to start the game, and a Cinch Miller TD run, and a two-point conversion made it 8-0 Badgers inside a minute into the first quarter.

Alliance struck back with Landon Crowe TD pass to Jonah Amill, two-point conversion was no good to keep score 8-6. Later, he found Seth Meyring for a 47-yard touchdown to tie it at 14.

Traven Fletcher answered for the Badgers with a 10-yard touchdown run to make in 14-6 Valentine. it was back and forth, as Valentine scored a touchdown of a Crowe interception halfway through the second quarter. From then on it would be all Bulldogs, as Alliance reclaimed the lead 22-20 at halftime. 

The second half was mostly Alliance scoring mostly at will, with Trejo taking advantage of taking advantage of running room in the middle of the field in the 2nd half, with Timbers also catching all three of his touchdowns in the second half. Alliance was also able to get some turnovers as well.

&nbsp;"I'm just proud of how they fought the entire game and for all four quarters," Head Coach T.D Stein said. "We're excited for the guys and for the future."

The win for the Bulldogs was their first at Bulldog Stadium since a 2019 win over Gering, and the 58 points is the high scoring total for Alliance since a 2006 win over Torrington where they scored 55 points.&nbsp;

The victory for Alliance improved them to 2-1 for the first time since 2016. Next up, Alliance will travel to 2-1 Gothenburg who is also 2-1.

The Hemingford Bobcats knew they were in for a battle with fellow 2-0 foe in Hyannis on Friday, and while Hemingford started out fast, but it were the Longhorns who held on for the 34-28 win.

Hemingford started the game with a long rushing touchdown from star running back Cody Galles from 65-yards out. Jacob Bryner added a 23-yard rushing touchdown to give the Bobcats a 12-0 lead after the 1st quarter.

Hyannis answered in the 2nd quarter with a 9-yard rushing touchdown and a 54-yard TD pass, and the Longhorns took a 14-12 lead at halftime.

Hemingford started the 2nd half strong as Bryner added his 2nd touchdown of the game on a one-yard plunge, and by adding a two-point conversion Hemingford led Hyannis 20-14 in the 3rd quarter.

Hyannis scored two straight touchdowns in the 3rd and 4th quarters to reclaim the lead, but Hemingford answered with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Bryner to Theron Miller to give the Bobcats a 28-26 lead in the 4th quarter. The ensuing kickoff was returned for a touchdown for the Longhorns, they added the two-point conversion which ended up being the game-winner for Hyannis.&nbsp;

"The kick return we gave up at the end was obviously not what we wanted, but from film, we believe our guys will watch, learn, and be ready to fix it this upcoming week," Head Coach Josh Dean said. "Our message to the team moving forward is that the sun will rise the next day. We must move on, but not without learning from our experiences thus far."

&nbsp;Hyannis was averaging over 50 points per game offensively coming into Friday night's game and Dean saw a lot of positives against a great team.

"Defensively we were proud of how our kids adapted to everything Hyannis threw at us. Hyannis used their skill positions to attack all areas of the field, running and passing, Dean said. "We had to play sound defense across the field to keep them out of the endzone. This week, we did a better job of limiting long scoring plays defensively."&nbsp;

Hemingford falls short in slugfest with Hyannis

CHADRON, Neb. -- The Augustana Vikings cashed in on three extra long touchdown plays and put the clamps on the Chadron State offense much of the time while winning a 27-3 non-conference decision in Chadron on Saturday afternoon.

Quarterback Casey Bauman connected on touchdown passes of 80 yards to Jack Fisher and 60 yards to Canyon Bauer just 2 ½ minutes apart in the first quarter after both receivers got open behind the Eagles' defense.

In addition, the Vikings' Devon Jones ran through a host of would-be tacklers while returning a punt 89 yards early in the fourth quarter that sealed the verdict. 

Augustana also scored on a one-yard plunge by Jarod Epperson to cap an 11-play, 88-yard drive a midway through the third period.

Chadron State's only points came on a 45-yard field goal by Wilson Yee on the last play of the first half after quarterback Heath Beemiller had completed four passes for perhaps the Eagles' best drive.

Led by the 6-foot-7 Bauman's 15 completions in 30 attempts for 291 yards the Vikings finished with 400 yards in total offense.  Chadron State managed just 214 yards, most of them through the air as Beemiller completed 19 of 26 passes for 152 yards.

Both defenses limited the damage that was done by the opponent's rushing attacks.

Augustana ran the ball 31 times for 97 yards, paced by Rashad Lampkin's nine carries for 44 yards, one of them a 26-yard jaunt.

Chadron State managed to only 47 yards on 30 rushes. Alternate quarterback Preston Pearson led the Eagles on the ground with 14 carries for 41 yards.  CSC was just two of 16 on third down conversions and punted 11 times.

Augustana was four of 11 on third downs attempts, and punted five times. Both Chadron State's Bodie Eisenbaum, who delivered 10 punts, and the Vikings' Avery Book, who did all of his team's punting, averaged more than 43 yards. 

Bolstered by his 80-yard TD reception, Fisher was the game's leading receiver with four catches for 122 yards. Bauer also caught an 11-yard toss to go with his 60-yard score.  Freshman Rolliin George led CSC in receiving with five for 44 yards.

Augustana's Jones also returned a punt 85 yards the previous Saturday during his team's 38-7 win over the University of Mary.  

The star of the game defensively was Chadron State safety Dax Yeradi, who intercepted three passes and took part in six tackles.  Eagles' linebackers Reed Henkel and Joey Geil were the busiest tacklers with 10 and eight, respectively.

Both linebacker Kade Lynott and back Peyton Buckley had seven tackles for Augustana while sophomore lineman Gradee Sherman was credited with all three of the Vikings' quarterback sacks that cost the Eagles 19 yards of offense.

Nebraska forced a turnover on downs to open the second half, before racing 66 yards in just four plays capped by Sims’ 57-yard touchdown run to bring the Big Red within six with 9:50 remaining in the third quarter.

The rest of the second half between the historic rivals belonged to Colorado.

The Huskers managed 341 total yards, including 119 passing and 222 rushing, while the Buffaloes had 468 total yards, including 396 through the air and 72 on the ground.

Sims completed 9-of-15 passes for 106 yards and an interception, while Heinrich Haarberg completed 2-of-6 attempts for 13 yards and a score for Nebraska. Billy Kemp IV was Nebraska’s top target, hauling in five catches for 57 yards.&nbsp;

Gabe Ervin Jr. led the NU ground game with a career-high 74 yards on 17 carries. Sims added 67 yards on 10 attempts with a score, while Rahmir Johnson contributed 66 yards on 11 totes.

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders connected on 31-of-42 passes for 393 yards and two touchdowns, while Xavier Weaver led the CU receiving corps with 10 grabs for 170 yards and a score.

The Nebraska defense compiled eight sacks and 11 tackles for loss on Saturday afternoon, which are the most tackles for loss for the Huskers since recording 12 against Colorado before 2018. Before Saturday, the last time the NU defense had at least seven sacks in a game was that same contest against the Buffaloes in 2018, when the Huskers recorded seven sacks.&nbsp;

The Huskers and Buffaloes played to a scoreless first quarter after Nebraska’s opening possession was halted with a fumbled snap on the 31-yard line in Colorado territory. The opening drive saw the NU offense reel off a pair of big plays with a 21-yard pass to Kemp IV and a 17-yard reception by Nate Boerkircher.

The Blackshirts stifled the CU offense early with three sacks on Colorado’s first possession in the second quarter, including a pair from Cameron Lenhardt and another by Nick Henrich. With two sacks, Lenhardt became the first true freshman to record two sacks in a game since defensive end Barry Turner had two sacks at Baylor in 2005.&nbsp;

Starting on its own nine-yard line with 12:06 remaining in the first half, the Huskers drove into CU territory with 64 yards on nine plays, including runs of 26 and 13 yards by Ervin Jr. Kemp IV pulled in a leaping 18-yard grab along the NU sideline to keep the momentum for the Big Red, before the drive ended with a missed 45-yard field goal attempt by Tristan Alvano.

Colorado capitalized on back-to-back turnovers from the NU offense to jump ahead 10-0 in under two minutes. The Buffaloes opened the scoring with a 31-yard field goal by Jace Feely with 4:20 remaining after a fumbled snap by Sims on Nebraska’s own 25-yard line.

The Buffaloes needed just one play following an NU interception to grab a 10-point lead with a 30-yard pass to Tar’Varish Dawson by Sanders with 2:43 left.

Feely’s field goal from 32 yards out as time expired gave Colorado a 13-point advantage at the half.

Following a turnover on downs by the Buffaloes to begin the second half, Sims broke free for a 57-yard scamper down the right sideline to bring the Big Red within six with 9:50 remaining in the third quarter.&nbsp;

Colorado responded immediately with a 12-yard scoring reception by Weaver on a drive extended six plays earlier with a 41-yard pass to Weaver on third down from its own 37-yard line.&nbsp;

The Buffaloes tacked on a field goal and a pair of touchdowns to grow the lead to 29, before Thomas Fidone snagged a four-yard touchdown reception on the game’s final play to make it 36-14.

Isaac Gifford led the Husker defense with a team-high eight tackles. Luke Reimer totaled five tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Lenhardt and Henrich chipped in three tackles and a pair of sacks each.

Mikai Gbayor and Malcom Hartzog recorded six tackles each, while Riley Van Poppel, Jimari Butler and Tamon Lynum picked up their first career sacks on Saturday.

Nebraska continues play next weekend, as the Huskers return to Lincoln for the home opener against Northern Illinois. Kick-off at Memorial Stadium is set for 6 p.m. with live national television coverage on FS1.

Huskers struggle at #22 Colorado 36-14

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos will watch running back&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-nfl-sports-foster-care-36304fe1855490e7cea216248616586a">Javonte Williams</a>&nbsp;' workload as he continues his comeback from a major knee injury that cost him most of last season.

They don't expect the Las Vegas Raiders to similarly ease the league's reigning rushing champion back into action after Josh Jacobs' protracted contract dispute kept him out most of the summer.

“I think he'll have the freshest legs on the field Sunday,” said Alex Singleton, the Broncos' leading tackler a year ago.

The AFC West foes kick off their seasons at Empower Field with the Broncos trying to snap a six-game losing streak to the Raiders. It's a skid many fans feel is more painful than Denver's 15-game losing streak to the Chiefs because, well,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-broncos-chargers-raiders-mahomes-payton-145bac3e3c3563709ff15ef19ed04458">Kansas City is good</a>, at least.

The Raiders have been bad for a while. They're coming off their fourth losing season in six years. The Broncos have been even worse, posting six straight losing seasons while churning through coaches and quarterbacks.

Jacobs led the NFL in rushing with 1,653 yards last season. He didn’t want to play under the $10.1 million franchise tag, so he sat out until two weeks ago, when he and the Raiders finally&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/josh-jacobs-las-vegas-raiders-3f3e20a33515e70dd80142c32d597413">agreed to a one-year deal</a>&nbsp;worth up to $12 million.

Raiders coach Josh McDaniels indicated during training camp that Jacobs likely would receive a similar workload as last season, when he had nearly 400 touches between rushing and receiving. McDaniels also said a player needs practice time to get up to speed.

So, Sunday will show if two weeks was sufficient for Jacobs to get reacclimated to football and accustomed to QB Jimmy Garoppolo, who has replaced Derek Carr.

Garoppolo said Jacobs knows the offense “but just getting on the same page with him, a couple swing routes, check-down routes, things like that” is what the pair has been working on. “We're trying to get on the same page. With the run game I mean he's as good as they come, so it makes my job pretty easy.”

The Broncos are breaking in a new offense under new coach Sean Payton, whose dual mission is to resuscitate a franchise and rescue both&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russell-wilson-denver-broncos-sean-payton-800111d5772c168785530e87ed8d5cfc">Russell Wilson's career</a>&nbsp;and the $245 million investment the team's owners made in way of a five-year extension before Wilson posted the worst season of his career in 2022.

Payton concurs with the notion you don't fix Wilson, you find him.

“And our job is to find him,” Payton said.

It's not all hugs and handshakes at Raiders headquarters. Defensive end Chandler Jones&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chandler-jones-las-vegas-raiders-mcdaniels-ziegler-d586de6d4af2a5d949f5ff6da70a5c9d">once again took to social media</a>&nbsp;to criticize team officials, posting and then deleting Wednesday night that the club sent someone from the city of Las Vegas’ crisis response team to his home. He also threatened to publicize unspecified information on McDaniels if Jones doesn’t play Sunday.

Earlier in the week, Jones criticized McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, saying he was locked out of the team facility.

McDaniels&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chandler-jones-las-vegas-raiders-mcdaniels-ziegler-6625c4aefbeab6e00236727d8d16b1fc">was asked about Jones</a>&nbsp;when he met with the media on Wednesday and called it a “private matter.”

Payton's predecessor, Nathaniel Hackett, couldn't wrap his head around some of his players' hate of the Raiders last year. His indifference to the heated nature of the rivalry puzzled Broncos fans who have long loathed the Raiders, no matter if the silver and black were in Oakland, Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Payton didn't exactly embrace the rivalry, either.

“I think of rivalries as college football,” Payton said, who added, “Division games are important. The first goal is to find a way to win your division. You play your divisional opponents twice. I can’t speak for rivalries. I just think that exists a little bit more in the collegiate game, and I think division games are important, yes.”

Garoppolo will be the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jimmy-garoppolo-raiders-nfl-free-agency-fd4c181cbbd173c798ba50ba3d02a07b">first Raiders quarterback</a>&nbsp;not named Derek Carr to open the season in a decade. Carr was the starter&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/san-francisco-49ers-las-vegas-raiders-sports-athlete-injuries-derek-carr-36b47428ca6f0641a5b53a9a283964c0">until he was benched</a>&nbsp;with two games remaining last season. “It was a little different with the foot this offseason and getting that right,” Garoppolo said. “Just getting back into the right feel and things like that. You’re always trying to improve things, little details here and there, a certain route with a guy, timing on a route. There was a lot of that this offseason just being in a new offense and everything. But I feel like we’re in a good spot.”

Broncos expecting heavy dose of Jacobs from Raiders in opener Sunday

CHADRON, Neb. -- September 6, 2023 -- For the second week in
a row, the Chadron State College football team will be meeting a new
opponent.&nbsp; The Eagles will host the
Augustana Vikings from Sioux Falls, S.D., for a noon kickoff Saturday at
Elliott Field.&nbsp; The teams have never
previously met on the gridiron.

Both teams won their season openers last week but by much
different margins.&nbsp; The Eagles edged the
Quincy Hawks in Illinois 35-34 by scoring with 36 seconds remaining, while the
Vikings breezed to a 38-7 win over the Mary Marauders from Bismarck, N.D., at
home.

Chadron State got off to a great start in its opener,
scoring on its first three possessions to take a 22-0 lead. But the Eagles had
a pair of passes intercepted that led to 27- and 19-yard touchdown drives and
fumbled a handoff at the Quincy one-yard line that was returned 99 yards by
linebacker Peyton Plunkett in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles trailed 34-29 before capitalizing on Quincey's
10-yard punt and driving 35 yards to the end zone for the victory.

"The turnovers cost us, but I was really proud of how
we ended the game," Head Coach Jay Long said.&nbsp; "It was a total team win. With just over
three minutes left, we needed a great punt, a defensive stop and a game-winning
drive. We did all three in a tough environment a long ways from home."

The Eagles finished with 366 total yards--219 passing and
147 rushing.&nbsp; They limited the Hawks to
85 yards on the ground and 165 passing for a 250 total.

Augustana scored in every quarter, led 24-0 at halftime and
added a touchdown in both the third and fourth periods.&nbsp; Mary's only TD came in the third stanza. 

The Vikings had 25 first downs and 433 yards of total
offense.&nbsp; Mary was held to 12 first downs
and 219 yards.

Augustana quarterback Casey Bauman, a 6-foot-7. 225-pound
grad student, completed 23 of 29 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown. The
Vikings rushed 37 times for 203 yards and three TDs. They also had an 85-yard
punt return for their final score. 

Augustana, which was 7-4 last season, was picked to finish
fourth in the Northern Sun Conference in the coaches' pre-season poll.&nbsp; It returned 10 its offensive starters and six
defensive players with starting experience.

CHADRON, Neb. -- SEPTEMBER 7, 2023 -- The Chadron State College volleyball team is in Winter Park, Florida this week for an invitational at Rollins College.

Chadron State will open play on Friday at 9 a.m. against Florida Tech, before facing host Rollins College at 3:30 p.m. Saturday's schedule has Tusculum University at 11 a.m., and Auburn University – Montgomery, at 3:30 p.m.

Last week, the Eagles finished 2-1 in their home classic. The victories occurred against York Univeristy and Minnesota State – Moorhead. The lone loss was against South Dakota Mines in four sets.

Against the Hardrockers, CSC scored 15 straight points in set three to come back and earn the set victory.

Lexi Hurtado led the Eagles last weekend, recording double-digit kills and digs in each match. Bella Adams had eight total blocks.

Florida Tech started their season with a record of 0-4 at the Seawolf Volleyball Invitational in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Panthers fell in four sets in three matches and were swept in their other match. They were swept by St. Cloud State, who is ranked seventh in the nation. Fourteenth ranked Alaska-Anchorage defeated Florida Tech in four sets.

Rollins has a perfect 4-0 record after a weekend at the PSAC East Kickoff Tournament in Millersville, Pennsylvania.

The Tars defeated Millersville University and West Chester University of Pennsylvania in three sets. Their first match of the season was a five-set victory over Indiana University of Pennsylvania before most recently having a four-set victory against Chestnut Hill.

Tusculum is sitting at 4-1 on the season after playing three matches in a tournament and two others.

At the Erskine Tournament in South Carolina, the Pioneers finished 2-1 with three-set sweeps over Erskine and Clark Atlanta. Their loss occurred against Lee College in four sets.

Since the season opening tournament, Tusculum defeated UVA Wise in four sets on Tuesday and had a four-set victory over Emory &amp; Henry on Wednesday.

Also at 4-1 is Auburn University at Montgomery. The Warhawks went 3-1 at the Newberry College Volleyball Invitational last weekend before winning a solo match on Monday.

The Warhawks have three-set victories over Francis Marion University and Belmont Abbey College. Their other wins took four sets against Newberry College and Albany State.

Lander University swept the Warhawks during the season opening tournament.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Lions walked into roaring Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night, where the Kansas City Chiefs are nearly unbeatable and were trying to open their latest Super Bowl title defense with a win, and proved what Detroit coach Dan Campbell has come to know in turning around the long downtrodden franchise.

“This is a resilient team,” Campbell said. “We're built to handle some stuff.”

Under the bright spotlight of the NFL's season opener, Jared Goff threw for 253 yards and a touchdown, new Lions running back David Montgomery&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1699980983922270258">ran for the go-ahead score</a>&nbsp;late in the game and Detroit held on for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mahomes-dropped-passes-chiefs-lions-c8ae8f426ed6bf1bc861241ec5edcce9">a 21-20 victory over the Chiefs</a>.

“We expected to win this game,” said Campbell, who won just three games his first season but led the Lions to eight wins over their final 10 games a year ago, when they went 9-8 and narrowly missed the playoffs. “We came in here, knew what we needed to do, knew it wasn’t going to be easy, and we did that. We won.”

Amon-Ra St. Brown had six catches for 71 yards and a score, and Lions rookie&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1699967866613928243?s=20">Brian Branch returned Patrick Mahomes' first pick</a>&nbsp;in an opener 50 yards for another touchdown, helping Detroit snap the Chiefs' eight-game Week 1 winning streak.

The Lions also snapped their own five-game skid in season openers.

“A lot of work has been put in this offseason,” Goff said, “and you want to start off winning the first one, and we did that today. We didn't play the best on offense, I thought the defense kept us in the game, but we found a way.”

When it fell incomplete and Detroit took over, Montgomery ran for a first down and the Lions ran out the clock.

Mahomes finished with 226 yards passing and two touchdowns, despite his receivers dropping a slew of passes. He also was the leading rusher for the Chiefs, whose self-inflicted wounds proved too much to overcome.

There had been equal parts anticipation and anxiety leading up to the game in Kansas City, where the Chiefs had celebrated their previous Lombardi Trophy in the midst of a pandemic, and only about 18,000 fans were able to join in the revelry.

Hundreds began tailgating outside the Arrowhead Stadium parking lots 14 hours before kickoff Thursday, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell along with about 80,000 more people joined them to see the Chiefs raise their latest championship banner.

That was the anticipation. The anxiety came from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-lions-travis-kelce-52ad950cf2472c589bd48ee813145cd3">the absence of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and fellow All-Pro Chris Jones</a>, who is in the midst of a contract holdout. The defensive tackle was expected to miss the opener, but Kelce had only been questionable since Tuesday, when he hyperextended his knee in the final full practice before game day.

“It wasn't feeling right,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “I wasn't going to put him out there with that, and he was honest with me.”

Detroit scored first in a showdown of two of the league’s top offenses a year ago. Goff took advantage of a clean pocket, thanks in part to Jones sitting in a stadium suite, to march down field and find St. Brown with a 9-yard touchdown pass.

The Chiefs answered with Mahomes finding five different wide receivers on a long drive, the last of them rookie Rashee Rice, who atoned for an earlier drop by snaring a short touchdown pass to knot the game at 7-apiece.

It remained that way until Campbell made a questionable decision late in the half.

The Chiefs were facing fourth-and-2 near midfield but had been called for holding, and rather than decline it, Campbell chose to push them back. Mahomes responded to third-and-17 by hitting Marquez Valdes-Scantling with a 24-yard strike. He added a 26-yard pass to Justin Watson, then hit Blake Bell with a short TD throw to give the Chiefs a 14-7 halftime lead.

With the Lions' offense still going nowhere in the second half, the defense stepped up. Branch caught a pass that bounced off Toney’s hands and found nothing but 50 yards of grass separating him from the end zone and a 14-all tie.

Up to that point, Mahomes had thrown 20 touchdown passes without an interception in five-plus season openers.

The Chiefs tacked on two field goals, but the missed chances to get into the end zone proved costly. The Lions followed up Harrison Butker’s second kick by driving 75 yards, twice converting on third down, with Montgomery capping the march with a 9-yard touchdown run that gave Detroit the the lead for good.

“The Lions did a heck of a job. They capitalized on a couple of things and we've got to fix it,” Reid said. “I liked the aggressiveness on the defensive side. There were some good things on offense. We just have to be more consistent.”

The Lions’ Marvin Jones fumbled away a good scoring chance in the second quarter, when Trent McDuffie knocked the ball out deep in Kansas City territory. It was the veteran wide receiver’s first fumble in his 12-year career and came on his 563rd touch, the longest active streak in the NFL.
