&nbsp; ODESSA, Texas -- November 26, 2022 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College men's basketball team shot 63.6% from the field while building a 57-25 halftime lead and went on to defeat Ecclesia College from Springdale, Ark., 94-67 during the second day of the Permian Basin Thanksgiving Classic at Odessa, Texas, on Saturday. Now 3-3, the win was the third straight for the Eagles, who will open their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule by playing at home twice this coming weekend, Dec. 2 and 3. Chadron State jumped out to a 14-2 lead in less than four minutes Saturday, and also closed the first half with an even stronger run. During the final 6 ½ minutes before intermission, the Eagles made eight-of-nine field goal shots and all four free throws while outscoring the Royals 20-2. For the game, the Eagles shot 54.4% (37-68), including 11-of-23 on 3-point attempts, and made nine of their 11 free throws.&nbsp; They also won the rebounding battle by a 43-33 margin and came away with 13 steals, one less than their turnover total. Junior guard Isaiah Wyatt was the game's leading scorer with 23 points on eight-of-12 from the field, including seven-of-10 from behind the arc.&nbsp; Forward Josh Robinson made eight of his 10 field goal shots and both free throws while tallying 18 points. Center Porter Anderson added 14 points while going five-of-seven from the field and four-of-five at the free throw stripe. The score remained close during the first seven minutes Friday afternoon.&nbsp; It was 14-12 before three Eagles—Patrick McLachlan, Bryce Latimer and Jarrett Taylor—nailed three-pointers in the next 3 ½ minutes to put their team ahead 23-15.&nbsp; By halftime, Chadron State owned a 42-24 margin.&nbsp; The Jarvis Bulldogs cut the difference to 11 points—61-50—with 7:44 to play, but the Eagles led by at least 18 during the final six minutes. Eagles win pair in Texas over Thanksgiving weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Sam Darnold has been waiting more than 10 months for another chance to prove he can lead the Carolina Panthers.

It finally came on Sunday, and he made the most of it.

Darnold threw for a touchdown and recovered his own fumble for another score in his first game since Jan. 9, helping the Panthers beat the Denver Broncos 23-10 and keep their modest playoff hopes alive heading into a bye week. Carolina (4-8) is last in the woeful NFC South but only 1 1/2 games behind division-leading Tampa Bay.

Darnold completed 11 of 19 passes for 164 yards without a turnover in his first game since losing the starting job to Baker Mayfield in training camp and then suffering a high ankle sprain in the preseason. He's the third QB to start this season for the Panthers, joining Mayfield and P.J. Walker.

“Once I got my feet wet out there and threw my first completion I felt like it was smooth sailing, especially given the way we were running the football," Darnold said.

The Panthers finished with 185 yards on the ground, getting 113 on 24 carries from D'Onta Foreman — his fourth 100-yard rushing performance in the last six games. That allowed Carolina to use the play-action pass effectively, and Darnold hooked up four times with D.J. Moore for 103 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown.

Darnold, who regained the starting job after Mayfield was benched, refused to say he took any vindication from the victory.

“It truly isn't about me,” Darnold said. “There are so many guys that have a hand in this. ... I would be silly to sit up here and take all of the credit. It was truly a team effort.”

Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks said he liked Darnold's ability to manage the game and take check-down opportunities.

“I loved how he was able to get outside of the pocket and try to win with his feet and still have his eyes down the field to execute,” Wilks said.

Carolina's defense limited Russell Wilson to 19 of 35 passing for 142 yards and sacked him three times, sending the Broncos (3-8) to their seventh loss in eight games. Pro Bowl defensive end Brian Burns had two sacks of Wilson, including a forced fumble, and he tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage to end another drive.

Denver came in with the worst scoring offense in the league and didn’t find the end zone until a 1-yard TD pass by Wilson with 3:24 left in the game, a performance sure to turn up the heat even more on embattled first-year coach Nathaniel Hackett.

Denver's frustration was evident in the fourth quarter when Wilson and defensive lineman Mike Purcell exchanged words on the sideline.

“Mike and I are on the same page," Wilson said. “He came off after they kicked a field goal and he was (upset). He was like, ‘We’ve got to go.’ So me and him are on the same page. There’s no animosity at all. We’ve got to win and have some grit to us and some mentality to us and win some football games.”

The Panthers led 10-3 when Darnold drove the Panthers to the Broncos' doorstep and scored an unusual touchdown midway through the third quarter.

After faking a handoff from the 2, Darnold made a move toward the end zone and was stripped of the ball. But the QB alertly picked up the ball and then rolled into the end zone untouched for a 17-3 lead.

“That is someone who is in tune to the situation and understands the rules of the game,” Wilks said. “He was quick to get on the ball and then realize no one touched him.”

The Panthers put the game away early in the fourth quarter when Darnold hit Moore in stride on a 52-yard bomb along the right sideline, setting up a 26-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro to make it a three-possession game.

“We felt like we could really run by these guys,” Wilks said. “As good of a secondary as they have, sometimes they sit and squat on things. So it was good to see that.”

Hackett was asked about his job security but mostly sidestepped the question.

“We all have high expectations. We want to win every football game. We all have to get better across the board. And that starts with me,” he said

The Broncos came into the game having scored a league-low 34 points in the third quarter and did not score Sunday. Hackett said the team scripted its third-quarter plays in hopes of remedying the issue.

“That didn’t work well,” Hackett said. “We’ve got to find better ones.”

The Broncos and Panthers came in as the league’s worst two teams at converting third downs and nothing changed there. Carolina was 2 of 12 on third down and Denver was 4 of 14.

Another dud from Broncos offense in 23-10 loss at Carolina

A proven program builder in college football,&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/matt-rhule/8455">Matt Rhule</a>&nbsp;has been hired as Nebraska's Head Football Coach.&nbsp;Nebraska Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/trev-alberts/8452">Trev Alberts</a>&nbsp;will introduce Rhule as the 31st&nbsp;permanent head coach in Nebraska history on Monday in Lincoln.

The 47-year-old Rhule has built an impressive coaching resume over the past 25 seasons with experience at both the collegiate and professional levels. Rhule has served as a head coach for the past 10 years, including seven seasons in the collegiate ranks and the past three seasons in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers.

Alberts said Rhule's success as the head coach at Temple and Baylor provides evidence of Rhule's ability to build a program and made him an ideal fit at Nebraska.

"It is a privilege to welcome Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/matt-rhule/8455">Matt Rhule</a>, his wife Julie, and their family to Nebraska," Alberts said. "Coach Rhule has created a winning culture throughout his coaching career, and he will provide great leadership for the young men in our football program. Matt is detail-oriented, his teams are disciplined and play a physical brand of football. Matt also has the personality and relationship-building skills to build a great staff and excel in recruiting."

Rhule said it is an honor to lead the Nebraska program and join the Lincoln community. He is excited to return to the college game and the opportunity to coach in the Big Ten Conference.&nbsp;

Rhule turned around programs at both Temple and Baylor during his seven seasons as a college head coach. In four seasons at Temple, Rhule guided the Owls to 28 victories, including 26 over his final three seasons from 2014 to 2016. After posting two wins in his first season, Temple posted a 6-6 record in 2014, setting the stage for the best back-to-back seasons in school history.

Temple posted a 10-4 record in 2015, were ranked as high as No. 22 in the Associated Press Poll and reached the American Athletic Conference's inaugural championship game. In 2016, Rhule led the Owls to a 10-3 record and an AAC championship. The conference title was the first in 49 seasons for the Temple program, and Temple reached bowl games in consecutive seasons for the first time in school history.

His success at Temple led Rhule to be named Baylor's head coach beginning with the 2017 season.&nbsp; After one win in his first season, the Bears posted a 7-6 record a made a trip to the Texas Bowl in Rhule's second year.

In his final season in Waco in 2019, Rhule guided Baylor to an 11-3 record, an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game and a Sugar Bowl berth. Rhule was named the 2019 Big 12 Coach of the Year and he became the first Power Five Coach to take a team from 11 losses to 11 wins within two seasons.

Rhule's collegiate success provided him the opportunity to take over as the Carolina Panthers head coach in 2020. Rhule guided the Panthers to five wins in each of his first two seasons and coached Carolina for five games in 2022.

Prior to his head coaching positions, Rhule had an impressive 15-year run as an assistant coach with stops at Albright College, Buffalo, UCLA, Western Carolina and Temple in college and the New York Giants in the NFL.

A native of New York City, Rhule played linebacker at Penn State from 1994 to 1997, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He also holds a master's degree from Buffalo. Rhule and his wife Julie have three children, Bryant, Vivienne and Leona.

Nebraska has signed Rhule to an eight-year contract. Additional contract details will be made available at Monday's press conference. &nbsp;

Matt Rhule named new Cornhusker Football Coach

DENVER (AP) — Whether Pete Carroll meant it as a barb for Russell 
Wilson or a bouquet for Geno Smith, the Seattle Seahawks coach made 
play-calling wristbands a hot topic in the NFL during a topsy-turvy 
season that has rattled the longstanding quarterback order.

Carroll
 was talking about the Seahawks’ surprising success in 2022 after moving
 on from Wilson when he mentioned Smith’s willingness to wear a 
wristband to help facilitate Seattle's play-calling.

“If you 
notice, Geno’s going off the wristband, and that’s a big help,” Carroll 
told Seattle Sports 710 AM earlier this month. “It’s smoothed things 
out, sped things up. And that’s part of it, too. We never did that 
before. There was resistance to that. So, we didn’t do that before.”

Wilson retorted with his own <a href="https://apnews.com/article/jacksonville-jaguars-denver-broncos-seattle-seahawks-nfl-sports-612de661c6102546d755e3cd732c2927">subtle dig</a>,
 reminding that he "won a lot of games there without one on the wrist. 
And I didn’t know winning or losing mattered if you wore the wristband 
or not.”

Coincidentally, Wilson wore a wristband for the first 
time with the Broncos in a win over the Jaguars in London two days 
before Carroll's comments, and he's been using it at games and practices
 ever since as the Broncos try to jump-start a sputtering offense.

He even wore it at the podium on Wednesday.

“Yeah, I guess I'm rocking this wristband here,” Wilson said with a chuckle.

On
 any weekend, roughly two-thirds of NFL quarterbacks are rocking the 
wristbands. Tom Brady has used one his whole career. But some QBs and 
coaches prefer memorization skills for their more complex plays.

The
 bands that hug the quarterback's non-throwing wrist and forearm contain
 dozens of plays with corresponding numbers or codes. They are often as 
much a benefit to the play-caller as to the QB because he can just call 
out a simple number rather than the entire play sequence with all its 
protections, checks and other nuances.

“As a play designer 
sometimes you want to get a little creative and those things can get a 
little bit verbose,” Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said.

Calling
 out a number and not the entire play sequence saves a few ticks before 
the quarterback's earpiece shuts off with 15 seconds left on the play 
clock. The QB can then relay the play and break the huddle quicker, 
getting up to the line of scrimmage with a few extra seconds to survey 
the defense for any necessary adjustments.

Hackett said the 
wristbands especially come in handy on the road and are particularly 
helpful with the game's ever more complex play calls.

“It's just how offenses have advanced,” Hackett said. “... we're getting more elaborate with our play designs."

Not
 all plays on the coaches' call sheets are listed on the quarterbacks' 
wristbands. They're often limited to those complex calls or to red-zone 
plays that are installed later in the week, which means players have had
 less time to practice them.

Some QBs, such as the Titans' Ryan Tannehill, have tried them but don't wear them all the time like Brady does.

“Last
 year when we went to Seattle I wore one” because of the din at Lumen 
Field, Tannehill said. “Not too many times. I like to be able to hear 
the call and visualize it in my head as it comes in. It just helps me 
build the picture of what’s going on. When I hear it and I have to build
 the picture of the play in my head, it helps me communicate with my 
guys as opposed to reading a line on a wristband.”

Vikings QB Kirk
 Cousins doesn't usually wear a wristband, and that has something to do 
with Rams coach Sean McVay, who was Cousins' offensive coordinator in 
Washington from 2014-16.

Cousins recalled telling McVay, “These plays are long, and I could use a wristband.”

"Sean
 would say, ‘I don’t look down at the call sheet to call the play to see
 what the wristband number is. I just call the game from my head,’” 
Cousins recounted. “So, he said, ‘We can’t do that because I’d have to 
go find the play and then give you the number.’ I learned with Sean that
 I’m just going to have to memorize these plays and I don’t have the 
luxury of a wristband.”

“There’s so many different ways to do it 
and I think there’s positives and negatives to every different way,” 
Cousins said. “There’s times where I like having a fair amount of words 
because you can paint the picture better, but there’s other times where 
you’re calling two to three plays and it can just be a lot. With a 
motion, a shift, an alert and you have the play clock, so there’s a lot 
going on.”

Cousins said he picked up a trick from backup Nick Mullens when he was digesting the Vikings' new offense this summer.

“I
 was really struggling late in August and early September of really 
getting to a place where I could spit the plays out with just total 
ownership,” Cousins said. He recalled Mullens telling him, “I just 
record the tricky plays on my phone and instead of listening to music or
 the radio on the drive to and from work, I'll just listen to the play 
calls.”

“I started doing that and my drives are a little more 
boring," Cousins said, “but I find myself getting home to the garage and
 I feel a little better about the game plan and my command of the game 
plan.”

Current Executive Director Jay Bellar will be retiring from the NSAA at the end of June 2023.&nbsp; Prior to his time at the NSAA, Bellar was a high school teacher, coach, activities director, and principal before becoming superintendent for Battle Creek Public School – a position he held for 20 years.&nbsp; Bellar also served as a member of the NSAA Board of Directors for 11 years from 2007–2018.

Finalists for the NSAA executive director position are:&nbsp; &nbsp;Mark Armstrong, Athletics and Activities Director at Lincoln Southwest High School;&nbsp; &nbsp; Jon Cerny, Superintendent at Bancroft-Rosalie Public School;&nbsp; &nbsp; John Krogstrand,&nbsp; Director of Athletics for Omaha Public Schools;&nbsp; and&nbsp; Chris Loofe, Associate Superintendent for Kearney Public Schools.

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- November 22, 2022 --&nbsp;After breaking a 4-4 tie, the Chadron State College men's basketball team led all the away while defeating Nebraska-Kearney 91-72 Tuesday night in the Chicoine Center in Chadron. The win was the first for the Eagles after they had lost three close contests, one of them in overtime and another by one point on a last-second shot.&nbsp; Kearney is now 2-4. The Eagles led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but were ahead by only 42-37 at halftime. Chadron State owned a 54-43 margin with 4 ½ minutes into the second half, but Kearney trailed by only 58-54 midway in the half after its leading scorer, Darrian Nebeker, put together an old-fashioned three-point play. Chadron State then broke the game open by going 5-of-5 from three-point range in a 2 ½-minute span.&nbsp; Pat McClachlen hit the first triple, Isaiah Wyatt made the second and fifth treys and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/marcus-jefferson/4653">Marcus Jefferson</a>&nbsp;and Jarrett Taylor each nailed one in between. The spree put the Eagles ahead 73-60.&nbsp; They led by at least that margin the rest of the way. CSC Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/shane-paben/551">Shane Paben</a>&nbsp;was pleased with his team's performance. He said the Eagles executed the offense well, used their quickness to play good defense and rebounded extra well.&nbsp; Kearney claimed just four offensive rebounds. Wyatt was CSC's leading scorer with 21 points on six-of-nine field goal shooting, including three-of-four from three-point range, and six-of-six at the free throw line.&nbsp; Diminutive Bryce Latimer tallied 17 points, MJ Foust scored 11, Josh Robinson 10, McLachlan nine, both Jefferson and Porter Anderson eight and Taylor seven. Robinson was the Eagles' top rebounder with nine while Taylor and Jefferson each handed out six assists. Chadron State's team stats were impressive. The Eagles shot exactly 50% from the field in both halves, going 16-of-32 in the first half and 18-of-36 in the second.&nbsp; They were 11-of-19 from behind the arc and 12-of-14 at the charity stripe. They outrebounded the Lopers 41-25 and committed just six turnovers. Kearney also shot well overall from the field, going 30-of-61, but were just seven-of-23 from long range and went to the free throw line only seven times, making five. Nebeker, a 6-6 super senior, finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds for game-high honors in both categories. Sean Evans added 14 points, Winston Cook 10 and Matt Brien nine and three others five apiece. The Eagles will conclude their non-conference schedule this weekend by participating in the Permian Basin Thanksgiving Classic at Odessa, Texas. Balanced attack pushes Eagles well past rival Lopers, 91-72

Alliance Girls Basketball Head Coach Stephen Crile gives a preview of the upcoming&nbsp; 2022-2023 season.&nbsp; The Bulldog Girls and Boys teams will open the season December 1-2-3&nbsp; in the Western Conference Invitational Tournament.&nbsp; The AHS Girls will open with Chadron on Thursday, Dec 1 at 4 pm, at Scottsbluff High School.&nbsp; The Boys will open Dec. 1 vs Gering&nbsp; at 5:30 pm at Mitchell High School.

Western Conference All Conference Selections-Fall 2022

CHADRON, Neb. -- November, 19, 2022 --&nbsp;The Sioux Falls Cougars scored on a tip-in inbounds play with barely more than a second remaining to edge the Chadron State Eagles 69-68 in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon in the Chicoine Center. The outcome was a heart-breaker for the Eagles, who played their hearts out trying to topple Sioux Falls, which beat them 96-78 on the Cougars' home court last year. Chadron State may not have defended the winning shot well, but it was executed to perfection by the South Dakota team. The Eagles had taken a 68-67 lead when center Porter Anderson grabbed a rebound and made the put-back with eight seconds remaining. After a timeout, Sioux Falls missed an off-balance shot. The referees ruled that the ball was knocked out of bounds by the Eagles with 1.7 seconds remaining.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the refs spent several minutes looking at the video to make sure their call was right, the play unfolded. Jake Kettner inbounded the ball by lobbing it over about a half dozen players in the paint to 6-foot-6 sophomore Noah Puetz. He was about eight feet away from the basket when he jumped, caught the ball and shot all in one motion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Puetz was just one of eight from the field when he sank the winning shot. The officials reviewed the video again after the shot. They determined 1.1 seconds were still on the clock, but it was not enough time for the Eagles to get off a viable shot While Kettner was one-of-10 shooting, his pass to Puetz gave him six assists.

Two players—one on each side—had outstanding games.

Matt Cartwright, a 6-6 grad student, led Sioux Falls with 27 points on nine-of-18 shooting from the field, including six-of-nine on 3-pointers. He also made three-of-five free throws and grabbed eight rebounds. The 6-7 Anderson paced the Eagles with 24 points while making eight of 10 field goal shots, nearly all of them power layups, and eight-of-11 free throws to go with six rebounds.&nbsp;&nbsp; Anderson had a reason for wanting to play well. A year ago during the game in Sioux Falls, he was inadvertently hit, sustaining a broken nose and a concussion that forced him to miss the Eagles' next six games and wear a mask a few more times.&nbsp; The Eagles got off to a slow start Saturday and trailed 23-9 midway in the first half. However, they got untracked and tallied 14 of the next 16 points, and were behind just 31-28 at halftime. It was nip-and-tuck the rest of the game with nine more lead changes and four ties. A layup by Anderson with 11:52 to play put CSC ahead 50-44 for the biggest lead either team owned in the second half. Besides Anderson, the Eagles had two more players score in double figures. Guard Isaiah Wyatt had 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, all off the defensive glass.&nbsp;&nbsp;Point guard&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/marcus-jefferson/4653">Marcus Jefferson</a>&nbsp;had 11 while going seven-of-eight at the free throw line. Sioux Falls' only double-digit scorer besides Cartwright, who now has scored 85 points in four games, was point guard Jack Thompson with 11. Sioux Falls is 3-1 and Chadron State 0-3. The Eagles will host Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

CHADRON, Neb. -- November, 19, 2022 --&nbsp;The Sioux Falls Cougars scored on a tip-in inbounds play with barely more than a second remaining to edge the Chadron State Eagles 69-68 in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon in the Chicoine Center. The outcome was a heart-breaker for the Eagles, who played their hearts out trying to topple Sioux Falls, which beat them 96-78 on the Cougars' home court last year. Chadron State may not have defended the winning shot well, but it was executed to perfection by the South Dakota team. The Eagles had taken a 68-67 lead when center Porter Anderson grabbed a rebound and made the put-back with eight seconds remaining. After a timeout, Sioux Falls missed an off-balance shot. The referees ruled that the ball was knocked out of bounds by the Eagles with 1.7 seconds remaining.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the refs spent several minutes looking at the video to make sure their call was right, the play unfolded. Jake Kettner inbounded the ball by lobbing it over about a half dozen players in the paint to 6-foot-6 sophomore Noah Puetz. He was about eight feet away from the basket when he jumped, caught the ball and shot all in one motion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Puetz was just one of eight from the field when he sank the winning shot. The officials reviewed the video again after the shot. They determined 1.1 seconds were still on the clock, but it was not enough time for the Eagles to get off a viable shot While Kettner was one-of-10 shooting, his pass to Puetz gave him six assists.Two players—one on each side—had outstanding games.Matt Cartwright, a 6-6 grad student, led Sioux Falls with 27 points on nine-of-18 shooting from the field, including six-of-nine on 3-pointers. He also made three-of-five free throws and grabbed eight rebounds. The 6-7 Anderson paced the Eagles with 24 points while making eight of 10 field goal shots, nearly all of them power layups, and eight-of-11 free throws to go with six rebounds.&nbsp;&nbsp; Anderson had a reason for wanting to play well. A year ago during the game in Sioux Falls, he was inadvertently hit, sustaining a broken nose and a concussion that forced him to miss the Eagles' next six games and wear a mask a few more times.&nbsp; The Eagles got off to a slow start Saturday and trailed 23-9 midway in the first half. However, they got untracked and tallied 14 of the next 16 points, and were behind just 31-28 at halftime. It was nip-and-tuck the rest of the game with nine more lead changes and four ties. A layup by Anderson with 11:52 to play put CSC ahead 50-44 for the biggest lead either team owned in the second half. Besides Anderson, the Eagles had two more players score in double figures. Guard Isaiah Wyatt had 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, all off the defensive glass.&nbsp;&nbsp;Point guard&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/marcus-jefferson/4653">Marcus Jefferson</a>&nbsp;had 11 while going seven-of-eight at the free throw line. Sioux Falls' only double-digit scorer besides Cartwright, who now has scored 85 points in four games, was point guard Jack Thompson with 11. Sioux Falls is 3-1 and Chadron State 0-3. Last-second tip-in edges Eagles, 69-68

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Juwan Gary scored 17 points, Blaise Keita had a double-double, and Nebraska rallied in the second half to defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 82-58 on Sunday.

The Cornhuskers trailed 39-36 at halftime then shot 57% in the second half, outscoring the Golden Lions 46-19. Keita scored 13 of his 14 points after intermission and finished with 10 rebounds.

C.J. Wilcher had 15 points and Wilhelm Breidenbach 10 off the bench for Nebraska (3-1). Gary had seven rebounds.

Freshman guard Zach Reinhart led UAPB (1-6) with 17 points in 30 minutes of play off the bench. Shaun Doss Jr. scored 12 points, eight below his average.

The Cornhuskers fell behind by eight points in the second half before their 8-0 run tied it at 44 with 15:49 to go. Doss responded with a 3-pointer on the Golden Lions' next possession, but that would be their final lead of the game.

UAPB scored four points in a 9 1/2-minute stretch while Nebraska built a 77-53 lead.

Second-half surge powers Huskers by Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 82-58

DENVER (AP) — Derek Carr stepped up in crunch time after Russell Wilson shunned the slide that would have made his counterpart's heroics so much harder.

Carr hit a wide-open Davante Adams with a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Raiders/status/1594486549802274818?s=20&amp;t=d7O7WwsFSjvW7iN5EfPr-A">35-yard touchdown pass</a>&nbsp;on the third play of overtime, powering the Las Vegas Raiders to a 22-16 win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

“I've always loved those moments. That's what I dreamed of as a kid," Carr said after leading to the Raiders (3-7) to their first win in seven one-score games this season.

The Broncos (3-7) found another way to lose a close one, dropping their sixth one-score game when Wilson left too much time on the clock at the end of regulation.

Denver was clinging to a 16-13 lead at the 2-minute warning when Wilson rolled right on third-and-10 from his own 34 and instead of sliding to burn more time, he pulled up and fired out of bounds.

“We called a pass play to basically try to end the game right there,” Wilson said. “We get a first down, the game's over. They covered it up pretty good, I was trying to get outside the pocket and then (Jalen) Virgil was scrambling down. I thought I had him, tried to take a shot at him and the ball just kind of went away.

"But we've got the best defense in the world and unfortunately it didn't work out this time.”

Wilson's misfire stopped the clock and the Raiders, who didn’t have any timeouts left and hadn't led all afternoon, got the ball back with 1:43 left instead of about a minute.

Carr drove them 71 yards, hitting running back Josh Jacobs for 43 yards to the Denver 7 to set up Daniel Carlson’s game-tying kick with 16 seconds left in regulation.

The Raiders won the overtime coin toss and Brandon McManus kicked it to the 5-yard line instead of blasting the ball out of the back of the end zone. Ameer Abdullah returned it 28 yards to the Las Vegas 33.

After Jacobs lost a yard, Carr hit tight end Foster Moreau for 33 yards over the middle to the Denver 35. From there, Adams confused the Denver defense and was all alone for the game-winner, which gave him 141 yards and two TDs on seven catches. Carr finished 23 of 37 for 307 yards.

“Learn from this game and learn from my mistakes,” Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain II said after getting turned around on the final play and also giving up a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1594450993378271232?s=20&amp;t=cXPdauKggLD0X0HxpQkwMQ">31-yard TD reception</a>&nbsp;to Adams in the first half.

McManus' 48-yard field goal put the Broncos ahead 16-13 with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter and Denver's defense forced the Raiders to go three-and-out. But Wilson couldn't burn enough time off the clock before the Raiders got the ball back.

Embattled first-year Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett relinquished offensive play-calling duties to Klint Kubiak, his QB coach and passing game coordinator, saying, “I want to do whatever I can to help this team.”

The move paid off immediately when the Broncos scored a touchdown on their opening drive for the first time under Wilson, whose 32-yard throw to Kendall Hinton set up Latavius Murray’s 1-yard TD run.

After that, the game settled into the grind-it-out defensive affair expected of two teams that have been riddled by injuries and ineffective offensive play.

“Everyone's sick to their stomach week in and week out,” Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton said after the Broncos blew another early lead, this time 10-0. “We know what we've got to do. We've got to find a way.”

Maxx Crosby came up huge in the final seconds of the first half, preventing a touchdown and then a field goal as the Raiders turned back the Broncos and kept their deficit to 10-7 at the half.

Crosby punched the ball out of fumble-prone running back Melvin Gordon's arms at the 1. Although guard Quinn Meinerz recovered for Denver at the 7, Crosby blocked McManus' 25-yard field-goal try as the first half expired.

That was Crosby's&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFLonFOX/status/1594458094649606145?s=20&amp;t=_92Pc4H4eMMixcgULO-MZQ">third career blocked field goal</a>, and all three have been against the Broncos. He had two against Denver on Jan. 3, 2021.

“If you don’t block that field goal, then we have to score a touchdown at the end of regulation, so I thought it was an enormous play,” Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said. “I thought it definitely gave us a little bit of a boost there.”

Crosby had two sacks in the second half, giving him nine of Las Vegas' 14 sacks on the season.

In the first quarter, Carlson's 48-yard try sailed wide right for his first missed field goal since Nov. 7 2021, against the Giants in the Meadowlands.

After their hookup in overtime gave the Raiders their sixth straight win over Denver for the first time since 1992-94, Carr and Adams ran off the field together.

“It felt amazing,” Adams said. "I did save Derek a little bit. He almost pulled us into the wrong tunnel. He was a little excited.”

Adams has three overtime TDs, tied with LaDainian Tomlinson for the most in NFL history.

Raiders S Duron Harmon was carted off with a leg injury early in the fourth quarter. Harmon was playing in his 154th consecutive game.

The Broncos lost RB Chase Edmonds (ankle) on their first drive and DT D.J. Jones (hand) and DL Jonathan Harris (knee) in the second quarter.

The Raiders visit Seattle next Sunday, their fourth road game in five weeks.

&nbsp; COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- November 14, 2022 --&nbsp;Chadron State College sophomore defensive lineman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/hunter-o-connor/4610">Hunter O'Connor</a>, of Broomfield, Colorado, was announced as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, in a release at RMACSports.org. O'Connor had an exceptional game at South Dakota Mines on Saturday. He set a new RMAC single-game record with 9.0 tackles for loss, for a total of 39 yards. He also broke the CSC school record for sacks in one season, passing RMAC and CSC Hall of Famer Casey Beran with 16.0 sacks this fall, after racking up five on Saturday. Of O'Connor's 13 total tackles, 12 were solo, including all five sacks and all nine tackles for loss. The five sacks were the second-best ever recorded in an RMAC game. The Legacy High grad is now No. 2 in NCAA Division II for sacks per game, and tied for No. 3 in tackles for loss per game. O'Connor is the second Eagles player tabbed for the conference's weekly honors, after placekicker Gunnar Jones on October 17.&nbsp;&nbsp;

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The suspect in a shooting at the University of Virginia that killed three members of the football team was taken into custody Monday, more than 13 hours after he allegedly gunned down fellow students in a bus as they returned from a school field trip, authorities said.

University President Jim Ryan and law enforcement officials were in the middle of a late morning news conference when they received word that Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. had been apprehended.

Two other students were wounded in the shooting late Sunday night, which happened near a campus parking garage as a charter bus full of students returned from seeing a play in Washington, D.C., for a class field trip. Ryan said one of the students was in critical condition and the other student was in good condition at a local hospital.

The shooting touched off an intense manhunt, with authorities ordering students to shelter in place and conducting a building-by-building and grounds search of the campus. Students stayed in place for more than 12 hours until the order was lifted late Monday morning.

When the news conference began, university police chief Timothy Longo Sr. said officials were “reasonably confident" the shooter was no longer on school grounds and urged the public to call 911 immediately if they saw him or the black SUV he was believed to be driving. Longo then received word that Jones had been apprehended.

“Just give me a moment to thank God, breathe a sigh of relief,” he said.

Longo said police have obtained arrest warrants for Jones charging him with three counts of murder and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He said the bus filled with students had just returned to campus when the shooting began.

“Someone among them chose to do an act of violence," he said.

&nbsp; RAPID CITY, S.D. -- November 12, 2022 --&nbsp;Chadron State College's long winning streak over South Dakota Mines ended Saturday when the Hardrockers scored a touchdown in each quarter and limited the Eagles to just one TD during a 28-7 victory at O'Harra Memorial Stadium in Rapid City. It was the final game of the season for both teams.&nbsp; Mines finishes with a 7-4 record and the Eagles at 3-8. But an offense that has scored 12 points in the third quarter all season bogged down and didn't score another point.

The quarterback, whose new deal after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seattle-seahawks-denver-broncos-nfl-business-sports-c9fe3ed6d40314d91eec74404d37573e">being traded</a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/denver-broncos">Denver</a>&nbsp;included a whopping $165 million in guarantees, was 21 of 42 and a 70.1 passer rating. He also ran seven times for 8 net yards. Wilson spent more time backpedaling, especially after losing wide receiver Jerry Jeudy to an injured ankle on the first play.

Not having Jeudy hurt even more with wide receiver KJ Hamler already scratched with an injured hamstring.

It didn't help that Graham Glasgow started at center for the injured Lloyd Cushenberry III and hurt a shoulder late in the third quarter. He was replaced by rookie Luke Wattenberg, who had played one snap previously. Right tackle Billy Turner didn't return after hurting a knee. It led to Wilson being hit 18 times.

First-year coach Nathaniel Hackett said the Broncos tried to mix it up as much as possible on offense.

“We wanted to try to master attack. We wanted a quick game,” Hackett said. “We wanted to do as much as we could to try to keep the defense off and protect those guys, and at the same time be able to protect Russ. And it just wasn’t coming together.”

Five of the Broncos' losses have been by one score with Sunday's the latest. Wilson also has been sacked at least three times in all but one game this season.

“We’re not going to give up, that’s for sure,” Wilson said. “Even though we’ve lost a lot of great players this season, really, the reality is we still have an opportunity to answer these moments. I’m going to do everything I can to find a way to answer those moments coming forward.”
