&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- January 2, 2023 --&nbsp;Already leading the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in rebounding, the Chadron State College men's basketball team out-boarded the Regis Rangers 45 to 30 and converted 16 of their offensive rebounds into 19 points while winning a 74-64 verdict in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Monday afternoon in Denver. The win was the Eagles' eighth in their last nine games, and improved their RMAC record to 5-1. Four CSC players scored in double digits, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/isaiah-wyatt/8518">Isaiah Wyatt</a>&nbsp;with 19 points to go with his game-high 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. The Eagles also got a big boost from&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/mj-foust/8511">MJ Foust</a>, who came off the bench to make 7 of 10 field goal shots while tallying a season-best 15 points and collecting seven rebounds. Both&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/porter-anderson/8506">Porter Anderson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/josh-robinson/8517">Josh Robinson</a>&nbsp;added 10 points and combined for 13 additional rebounds. Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/shane-paben/551">Shane Paben</a>&nbsp;was thrilled with the road victory.&nbsp; He said the Eagles were strong defensively, finished well on offense and played smart basketball. "We're getting better," Paben said. "I'm excited for the guys because I know we can play better offensively.&nbsp; We're a great rebounding team that focuses on offensive rebounding. That really paid off today.&nbsp; We also like to rebound on defense.&nbsp; We don't want to give the other team second chances." The game was close much of the way. There were 12 lead changes and seven ties.&nbsp; The Rangers led 35-31 at halftime, but Chadron State outscored them 43-29 in the second half. The Eagles took the lead for keeps 49-48 on Wyatt's three-pointer with 11:23 to play.&nbsp; They eventually led by 11.&nbsp; Regis rallied to cut the margin to six with two minutes left, but 12 seconds later Foust took a pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bryce-latimer/8513">Bryce Latimer</a>&nbsp;and dunked the ball to pretty well seal the verdict. Wyatt and the team's senior citizen,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/marcus-jefferson/4653">Marcus Jefferson</a>, made both of their free throws after they were fouled to stop the clock in the final minute. Regis, now 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the RMAC, was paced by guard David Simental with 19 points. Jesdeep Singh hit four of six three-point shots while contributing 14 points and Eddy Egun added 11, but shot just 25% from the field. The game was originally scheduled for Dec. 16, but the Eagles were snowbound and could not make the trip.&nbsp; CSC also was slated to visit Colorado-Colorado Springs the next day, but that game also had to be postponed.&nbsp; So, the Eagles will visit the Mountain Lions Tuesday afternoon. Chadron State wins 8th in last nine games at Regis Monday

&nbsp; DENVER -- January 2, 2023 --&nbsp;After the Chadron State women's basketball team took a 3-1 lead in the first 44 seconds when&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/samiyah-worrell/8407">Samiyah Worrell</a>&nbsp;sank a three-pointer, Regis went on a 14-point run during the ensuing four minutes and was ahead the rest of the way while winning a 74-63 decision over the Eagles in Denver on Monday afternoon. The stats show that the Lady Rangers did two things extra well to make a big difference.&nbsp; They made 10 of their 21 three-point shots and out-rebounded their guests 44-24. Five players—three from Regis and two from Chadron State--did most of the scoring. Josey Ryan tallied 19 points and Erin Fry and Sam Deem 17 for the Denver team while the one-two punch of Shay Powers, who finished with 22 points, and Worrell, who tallied 21, had 43 of the Eagles' 63 total. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ryan was five-of-nine, Fry three-of-four and Deem two-of-four from behind the arc. Worrell connected on four-of-eight from long range.&nbsp; Morgan Smith scored just two points, but claimed 10 rebounds to lead the Rangers to their big bulge off the glass.&nbsp; Regis grabbed 15 offensive caroms that resulted in 14 second chance points. The Eagles scored two baskets off their four offensive rebounds. The Eagles, who had five turnovers while Regis was jumping out to its 15-3 lead, finally came out of their early funk and played pretty well the rest of the game. Besides her opening trey, Worrell buried two more in the first period, helping Chadron State cut the Regis lead to 23-15 at the end of the quarter. During the next three frames, the Rangers outscored the Eagles by only a 51-48 margin.&nbsp; But Regis always led from eight to 18 points in the second half. The Rangers are now 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the RMAC. Regis' run early too much for Eagles to overcome Monday

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. – December 31, 2022 –&nbsp;The Chadron State College women's basketball team fell behind to MSU Denver in the first quarter, but trailed for a total of 39 seconds in the remaining 30 minutes of play, as it got its second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win on Saturday afternoon in the Chicoine Center. The Eagles improve to 2-9 overall and 2-3 in the RMAC. MSU Denver fell to 4-8 (2-4 RMAC).&nbsp; The visiting Roadrunners led by nine at the 2:17 mark in the first quarter. However, the Eagles went on a 28-9 run to take a double-digit lead at 36-26 with 2:41 until halftime. CSC went into the locker room up 40-31 on a&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/samiyah-worrell/8407">Samiyah Worrell</a>&nbsp;layup at the second period buzzer. Coming out of the half, CSC freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/allison-olsen/8523">Allison Olsen</a>&nbsp;gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game with a layup just 14 seconds into the third period. The Roadrunners' only other lead was at 3:03 in the third. The game's leading scorer and rebounder,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ashayla-powers/4644">Ashayla Powers</a>, made a layup 27 seconds later to put the Eagles ahead for good. The Eagles improved dramatically in a couple of areas in which they struggled before the break. They were averaging nearly 17 turnovers per game over the first 10 games, and committed only 13 on Saturday. Also, the team which shot 25.6 percent from three-point range earlier in the season hit 6-for-23 from beyond the arc on Saturday, for an even 50 percent. CSC veterans Powers and Worrell starred for CSC. The former scored 26 points and had eight rebounds, while the latter went for 19 points and another eight boards. Both players scooped up two steals. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/kadyn-comer/8395">Kadyn Comer</a>&nbsp;led the Eagles with six assists and three steals. For the Roadrunners, Mikylah Espinosa led with 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting and added a team-high six rebounds, to tie with teammate Brianna Sealy. Jaiden Galloway tied Comer for a game-high six assists. Both CSC basketball teams will travel to the Colorado Front Range almost immediately, to make up games rescheduled from the local blizzard two weeks prior, which rendered all Eagles teams unable to travel. High School Basketball returns to the courts this week with Alliance and Chadron hosting Holiday Tournaments.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Alliance will host Broken Bow, Boone Central and Adams Central.&nbsp; &nbsp;The Chadron Rotary Classic will feature Hemingford, Valentine, Custer SD and Chadron, with games at the Chicoine Center at Chadron State College.&nbsp; Both events will run December 29-30.&nbsp; The schedules are listed below:

Multiple reports out of Lincoln on Tuesday,&nbsp; say former Scottsbluff Bearcat and Cornhusker Team Captain Garrett Nelson, will not return for a fifth season at Nebraska.&nbsp; &nbsp;According to 10/11 Now,&nbsp; Nelson announced Tuesday,&nbsp; on twitter,&nbsp; that he will declare for the 2023 NFL Draft.&nbsp;

Nelson lead the Huskers with 9 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks, with&nbsp; a career high 65 tackles in 2022.&nbsp; &nbsp;He played in 43 games, making 32 straight starts in his 4 seasons at Nebraska. Nelson finishes with 26 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and 167 total tackles.&nbsp;

On his Twitter post Nelson said..." Ever since I was a little kid, my dream to attend the University of Nebraska, follow in my father's footsteps, and become a collegiate athlete, was a constant in my life".&nbsp; &nbsp;"Representing this University, the people of this state and my family was one of the highest honors I will have in my life."&nbsp; &nbsp;"I thank everyone who supported me and loved me along the way."&nbsp;

He went on to thank his Teammates, Coaches and Cornhusker fans.&nbsp; The 2023 NFL Draft will be April 27, 28 and 29, in Kansas City.

Scottsbluff Grad,  Garrett Nelson will skip final season at Nebraska

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos fired first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett on Monday with two games left in the season.

Owner and CEO Greg Penner said he'll lead the search for a new coach with assistance from GM George Paton, in whom he expressed confidence while announcing&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1607432324152426496?s=20&amp;t=ptRR7Kbi9InGOMA4jA3oYw">Hackett's dismissal</a>.

Firing Hackett with two games left in a lost season allows Penner to begin his search for a replacement immediately.

The Broncos scheduled a news conference for Tuesday, when they're expected to name their interim head coach for games at Kansas City next weekend and at home against the Chargers in Week 18.

The Walton-Penner group purchased the Broncos for $4.65 billion last summer, a global record for a professional sports franchise, and Rob Walton said after the league’s approval that he aimed to make the Broncos perennial championship contenders again.

On Sunday, the Broncos (4-11) were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-los-angeles-rams-sean-mcvay-nfl-sports-996b45d21f8886479127cf5af82199b6">blown out by the equally downtrodden Los Angeles Rams 51-14</a>&nbsp;when Russell Wilson threw three interceptions and was sacked six times. The game featured a sideline spat between backup QB Brett Rypien and guard Dalton Risner, and pass rusher Randy Gregory threw a punch at a Rams player after the game.

In a statement Monday, Penner thanked Hackett for his dedication but said that “following extensive conversations with George and our ownership group, we determined a new direction would ultimately be in the best interest of the Broncos. This change was made now out of respect for everyone involved and allows us to immediately begin the search for a new head coach.”

Penner said that “moving forward, we will carefully evaluate every aspect of our football operations and make whatever changes are necessary to restore this franchise’s winning tradition.”

Hackett replaced Vic Fangio last January but hasn’t been able to build an offense suitable to Wilson, who recently turned 34.

Hackett is the third NFL head coach fired during the 2022 season. The Carolina Panthers replaced Matt Rhule with interim head coach Steve Wilks and the Indianapolis Colts fired Frank Reich and replaced him with coaching novice Jeff Saturday.

Many fans thought the Broncos hired Hackett away from the Green Bay Packers, where he was offensive coordinator, to help them land quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But Rodgers decided to re-up with the Packers and the Broncos instead traded for Wilson, who was seen as still in his prime.

Wilson, however, has had an awful first season in Denver after the Broncos sent four premium draft picks and three players to Seattle for the nine-time Pro Bowler. Wilson has 12 touchdown passes with nine interceptions and 49 sacks in 13 starts and has been unable to snap out of a season-long funk.

He is 3-10 as Denver's starter and has missed games with a pulled hamstring and a concussion.

He routinely has ignored open receivers underneath to try for deep throws and he has shown a noticeable dip in his ability to escape from pass rushers this season.

The Broncos have missed the playoffs seven straight seasons and extended their string of losing records to six.

They will try to snap a 14-game losing streak to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and beat Patrick Mahomes for the first time in 11 tries.

🏈 Broncos fire rookie head coach Hackett after 4-11 start

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Franco Harris, the Hall of Fame running back whose heads-up thinking authored “The Immaculate Reception,” considered the most iconic play in NFL history, has died. He was 72.

Harris' son Dok told The Associated Press his father passed away overnight. No cause of death was given.

His death comes two days before the 50th anniversary of the play that provided the jolt that helped transform the Steelers from also-rans into the NFL's elite and three days before Pittsburgh is scheduled to retire his No. 32 during a ceremony at halftime of its game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Harris ran for 12,120 yards and won four Super Bowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s, a dynasty that began in earnest when Harris decided to keep running during a last-second heave by Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw in a playoff game against Oakland in 1972.

With Pittsburgh trailing 7-6 and facing fourth-and-10 from their own 40 yard line and 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Bradshaw drifted back and threw deep to running back French Fuqua. Fuqua and Oakland defensive back Jack Tatum collided, sending the ball careening back toward midfield in the direction of Harris.

While nearly everyone else on the field stopped, Harris kept his legs churning, snatching the ball just inches above the Three Rivers Stadium turf near the Oakland 45 then outracing several stunned Raider defenders to give the Steelers their first playoff victory in the franchise's four-decade history.

“That play really represents our teams of the ’70s,” Harris said after the ”Immaculate Reception" was voted the greatest play in NFL history during the league's 100th anniversary season in 2020.

While the Steelers fell the next week to Miami in the AFC Championship, Pittsburgh was on its way to becoming the dominant team of the 1970s, twice winning back-to-back Super Bowls, first after the 1974 and 1975 seasons and again after the 1978 and 1979 seasons.

Harris, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound workhorse from Penn State, found himself in the center of it all. He churned for a then-record 158 yards rushing and a touchdown in Pittsburgh's 16-6 victory over Minnesota in Super Bowl IX on his way to winning the game's Most Valuable Player award. He scored at least once in three of the four Super Bowls he played in, and his 354 career yards rushing on the NFL's biggest stage remains a record nearly four decades after his retirement.

Born in Fort Dix, New Jersey, on March 7, 1950, Harris played collegiately at Penn State, where his primary job was to open holes for backfield mate Lydell Mitchell. The Steelers, in the final stages of a rebuild led by Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll, saw enough in Harris to make him the 13th overall pick in the 1972 draft.

“When (Noll) drafted Franco Harris, he gave the offense heart, he gave it discipline, he gave it desire, he gave it the ability to win a championship in Pittsburgh,” Steelers Hall of Fame wide receiver Lynn Swann said of his frequent roommate on team road trips.

Harris' impact was immediate. He won the NFL's Rookie to the Year award in 1972 after rushing for a then-team-rookie record 1,055 yards and 10 touchdowns as the Steelers reached the postseason for just the second time in franchise history.

The city's large Italian-American population embraced Harris immediately, led by two local businessmen who founded what became known as “Franco's Italian Army,” a nod to Harris' roots as the son of an African-American father and an Italian mother.

The “Immaculate Reception” made Harris a star, though he typically preferred to let his play and not his mouth do the talking. On a team that featured big personalities in Bradshaw, defensive tackle Joe Greene, linebacker Jack Lambert among others, the intensely quiet Harris spent 12 seasons as the engine that helped Pittsburgh's offense go.

Eight times he topped 1,000 yards rushing in a season, including five times while playing a 14-game schedule. He piled up another 1,556 yards rushing and 16 rushing touchdowns in the playoffs, both second all-time behind Smith.

Despite his gaudy numbers, Harris stressed he was just one cog in an extraordinary machine that redefined greatness.

“You see, during that era, each player brought their own little piece with them to make that wonderful decade happen,” Harris said during his Hall of Fame speech in 1990. “Each player had their strengths and weaknesses, each their own thinking, each their own method, just each, each had their own. But then it was amazing, it all came together, and it stayed together to forge the greatest team of all times.”

Harris also made it a habit to stick up for his teammates. When Bradshaw took what Harris felt was an illegal late hit from Dallas linebacker Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson in the second half of their meeting in the 1978 Super Bowl, Harris basically demanded Bradshaw give him the ball on the next play. All Harris did was sprint up the middle 22 yards — right by Henderson — for a touchdown that gave the Steelers an 11-point lead they would not relinquish on their way to their third championship in six years.

Despite all of his success, his time in Pittsburgh ended acrimoniously when the Steelers cut him after he held out during training camp before the 1984 season. Noll, who leaned on Harris so heavily for so long, famously answered “Franco who?” when asked about Harris' absence from the team's camp at Saint Vincent College.

Harris signed with Seattle, running for just 170 yards in eight games before being released in midseason. He retired as the NFL's third all-time leading rusher behind Walter Payton and Jim Brown.

"I don’t even think about that (anymore),” Harris said in 2006. “I’m still black and gold.”

Harris remained in Pittsburgh following his retirement, opening a bakery and becoming heavily involved in several charities, including serving as the chairman of “Pittsburgh Promise," which provides college scholarship opportunities for Pittsburgh Public School students.

Harris is survived by his wife Dana Dokmanovich and his son, Dok.

DENVER (AP) — Backup quarterback Brett Rypien led the Denver Broncos to their first win since October.

His reward: A seat back on the bench. This is, after all, Russell Wilson's show and he'll be back under center next week.

Rypien&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1604622521109581824">made the most of his third career start</a>&nbsp;as he overcame relentless pressure from a J.J. Watt-led Arizona defense to help the Broncos hold off the Cardinals 24-15 on Sunday.

“Really, the whole goal is just to try to find a way to win and to do that I just feel like we accomplished something great,” Rypien said. “It’s awesome.”

The game featured two backup QBs, but Arizona lost Colt McCoy&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=35281712">to a concussion early</a>&nbsp;in the third quarter after he hit his head while diving for a first down. McCoy was intercepted once and his replacement, Trace McSorley, threw two more picks. McCoy will enter the league's concussion protocol.

“It’s tough," McSorley said. “You never want to see someone go down.”

Rypien was sacked seven times, including three by Watt, but directed three second-half scoring drives to help the Broncos (4-10) snap a five-game losing streak.

Latavius Murray ran for 130 yards&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1604620494421966848">and a touchdown</a>, Marlon Mack also had a rushing TD, and Rypien threw a short scoring pass — after a well-disguised fake — to Eric Tomlinson as Denver turned a 9-3 deficit into a 24-9 lead.

The Denver defense was led by Justin Simmons, who had two interceptions and helped hold the Cardinals to 2 of 12 on third downs.

“We’ve been in so many games against a bunch of very good football teams. We had another choice today," first-year Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said. “We were down 9-3 and those guys had another choice. They stepped up.”

Subbing for Wilson, who was held out for safety reasons after clearing the concussion protocol, Rypien had 197 yards passing and one interception. McCoy took over for Kyler Murray, who's out for the season with a torn ACL. McCoy was 13 of 21 for 78 yards and was picked off by Simmons late in the first quarter.

The Cardinals managed three early field goals by former Bronco Matt Prater. James Conner had a late TD run but a 2-point pass was broken up. The Cardinals (4-10) have dropped four straight and were eliminated from playoff contention.

“It sucks,” Watt said. “You’re playing for the future and it’s a (expletive) place to be with three games left. But that’s what it is."

Added Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury: "They continue to show up and play hard. That’s all you can ask.”

Plenty of paying customers weren't on hand to see it: There were 18,423 no-shows for a game between struggling teams with both coaches on the hot seat.

In the first half, the Broncos had no answers for Watt, who also had three quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, a pass defensed and a forced fumble.

“You know, 99 (Watt) was a problem, flat out,” Rypien said. “He came to play.”

The Broncos altered their game plan in the second half, turning to quick screens to neutralize Watt.

“The second half was obviously very different," Watt said.

In addition to Wilson, Denver's patchwork offense was missing receivers Courtland Sutton and Kendall Hinton (both with pulled hamstrings). The Broncos also lost right guard Quinn Meinerz to an eye injury early in the game.

Wilson wore a hat and a thick jacket as he walked the sideline. He held a play sheet in his hand and frequently consulted with Rypien when the backup returned to the sideline. The Broncos have already been eliminated from the postseason.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where you’re not going to be around very long, even if you have a great career,” Rypien said. "There’s always something to play for. I think that attitude has never changed in our locker room. We’ve got guys that want to go out there, want to play hard and want to win every single game.”

Cardinals: OL Kelvin Beachum was banged up on the same play as McCoy, leaving with a knee/ankle injury before returning.

Broncos: Meinerz held a towel over his right eye as he left the field. Meinerz's replacement, Tom Compton, later departed with a back injury.

Latavius Murray turns 33 in January but is performing like a younger running back. He was signed by Denver in October.

“The hardest part was knowing that I still could contribute — to whoever that was,” Murray said.

Cardinals: Host Tom Brady and Tampa Bay next Sunday.

CSC's travel provider, in Spearfish, South Dakota, was unable to supply vehicles to Chadron, as of 8 a.m. Friday, and winds around Chadron were gusting up to 50 miles per hour with a weather advisory extended to 5 p.m. The Regis games were rescheduled on Monday, January 2, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., with the men's game preceding the women's. The CSC athletics department will continue to monitor road decisions, in order to make a decision about Saturday's games at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Alliance High School Unified Bowling Team competed in the Class B State Tournament, at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Monday December 5. The Bulldog team qualified for State for the 6th time in the 7 year history of Unified Bowling.&nbsp; AHS Coach Laura Mangas talks about this years team and this excellent program.

DENVER (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs own the Denver Broncos — even when Patrick Mahomes throws three interceptions and a 27-0 lead turns into a nail-biter.

Mahomes counterbalanced his mistakes with a trio of touchdown passes and the Chiefs (10-3) outlasted the Broncos 34-28 on Sunday. Russell Wilson left with a concussion early in the fourth quarter as Denver (3-10) lost to Kansas City for the 14th consecutive time.

“Just three bad decisions,” Mahomes said. “Luckily for me, the rest of the team stepped up. Defense made a lot of stops in some critical moments when we were putting them in some bad situations. Even my special teams. (Punter) Tommy (Townsend) flipped the field a couple of times for us.”

Mahomes improved to 10-0 against Denver, becoming the fourth QB to ever beat one team 10 times without a loss. The Chiefs reached double digits in wins for the eighth straight season and they inched closer to their seventh consecutive AFC West crown.

The Broncos, well, they came up short again and lost a one-score game for the seventh time this season under rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett.

"We never finish the way we want to," Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy said after a career-best&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1602071004746223616">three-touchdown</a>&nbsp;day, “but the one thing I can say for sure is that we never quit.”

The Broncos, who have lost five straight overall and eight consecutive AFC West games for the first time since divisional play began with the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, turned their 27-0 deficit into a ballgame by scoring three touchdowns over a 3 1/2-minute stretch spanning halftime.

Rypien had a chance to put the Broncos ahead following linebacker Josey Jewell's second interception of the game with just under six minutes left. But Rypien was hit by Chris Jones just as he released a deep throw toward Jeudy, and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed picked off the high pass with 4:21 remaining.

A personal foul on Frank Clark after that interception pushed the Chiefs back to their 15-yard line, but Mahomes &amp; Co. chewed up the rest of the clock, never letting the Broncos get another crack at the upset.

Mahomes threw for 352 yards and one of his three touchdowns was a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1602057078000201729">no-look hook pass</a>&nbsp;to Jerick McKinnon, who had two TD catches.

Mahomes was scrambling for a first down when he shook defensive lineman D.J. Jones and flung a pass across his body to a wide-open McKinnon, who raced down Denver's dejected sideline for a 56-yard touchdown and a 13-0 lead.

“I was committed to running,” Mahomes said, “and I saw I was about to get hit like I did last week in Cincinnati, so I just kind of flicked it. I was just trying to get it to him whatever way possible.”

Mahomes and McKinnon connected on a more traditional 10-yard TD on Kansas City's next possession. At that point, Mahomes had 224 passing yards to Wilson's 33, but things would get even worse for Denver's scuffling quarterback before they got better.

On fourth-and-2 at his own 45-yard line, Wilson tried to throw a screen pass to Brandon Johnson but didn't get it high enough. “I was an athlete all through high school,” Gay said, “so I knew I was going to be able to get that.”

His pick-6 put the Chiefs in charge at 27-0 with 4:32 left in the half.

Jeudy caught his first two touchdown passes, from 18 and 5 yards out, after Mahomes uncharacteristically threw interceptions — to Josey Jewell and Patrick Surtain II — on consecutive possessions, making it 27-14 at the half.

On the opening drive after halftime, running back&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1602076235122630658">Marlon Mack</a>&nbsp;caught a short pass from Wilson and raced 66 yards for the end zone to pull Denver within 27-21.

Mahomes countered with a 4-yard TD strike to JuJu Smith-Schuster.

“Luckily we got the win,” Mahomes said. “But you don't win a lot of games when you've got three interceptions.”

By improving to 10-0 against the Broncos, Mahomes joined Andrew Luck, who started 11-0 against the Titans; Tom Brady, who went 10-0 against the Falcons; and John Elway, who won his first 10 against the Patriots.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and Mahomes had a difficult day connecting, but coach Andy Reid said, “you've got to give a couple of shout-outs to Kelce” after he caught four passes (out of nine targets) for 71 yards.

That made Kelce the first tight end in NFL history to record seven straight 1,000-yard seasons, and he became the fifth tight end to top 10,000 yards, joining Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Antonio Gates and Shannon Sharpe.

“Honestly," Kelce said, “right now the winning means more than any of those stats.”

Broncos LG Dalton Risner (back) missed his first game of the year. RB Mike Boone (ankle) and WR Kendall Hinton (hamstring) couldn’t finish.

Broncos show signs of life on offense, comeback falls short in loss to Chiefs

LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Grant Wahl, one of the most well-known soccer writers in the United States, died early Saturday while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands. He was 48.

U.S. media seated near him said Wahl fell back in his seat in a section of Lusail Stadium reserved for journalists during extra time of the game, and reporters adjacent to him called for assistance.

Emergency services workers responded very quickly, treated him for 20 or 30 minutes on the spot and then took him out on a stretcher, said Keir Radnedge, a veteran British sports journalist who was working nearby at the time.

The World Cup organizing committee said he was taken to Doha's Hamad General Hospital, but it did not state a cause of death. “We are in touch with the US Embassy and relevant local authorities to ensure the process of repatriating the body is in accordance with the family’s wishes,” it said in a statement.

Wahl, who wrote for Sports Illustrated for a decade then started his own website, was a major voice in introducing professional soccer to an American public more used to seeing the sport as a school-level game. He also brought a critical eye to the organizational bodies of the international sport.

He “really helped put soccer on the mainstream sports map in the States,” Radnedge said.

“Grant had a strong moral compass, on where sports should be and how sport ... should help set standards for people,” he said. “There was never any doubt that Grant was on the side of the good guys in wanting soccer to make the best of itself.”

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup. He wrote Monday on his website that he had&nbsp;<a href="https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/world-cup-daily-day-22">visited a medical clinic</a>&nbsp;while in Qatar.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.”

Wahl wrote that he tested negative for COVID-19 and sought treatment for his symptoms.

“I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno,” he wrote.

Wahl tweeted on Wednesday that he had celebrated his birthday that day.

“We could always count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game, and its major protagonists,” the U.S. Soccer Federation said in a statement. “Grant’s belief in the power of the game to advance human rights was, and will remain, an inspiration to all. Grant made soccer his life’s work, and we are devastated that he and his brilliant writing will no longer be with us.”

Wahl's wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, tweeted that she was thankful for the support of her husband’s “soccer family” and friends who had reached out.

It’s a tragic loss. It’s unfortunate to lose someone as great as he was. I wish his family the best. May he rest in paradise.”

A voter at times in FIFA’s annual awards, Wahl was among 82 journalists honored last week by FIFA and the international sports press association AIPS for attending eight or more World Cups.

“His love for football was immense and his reporting will be missed by all who follow the global game,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

Wahl graduated from Princeton in 1996 and worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, known primarily for his coverage of soccer and college basketball. He then launched his own website.

Wahl also worked for Fox Sports from 2012-19.

His death at the World Cup left fellow journalists covering the games stunned.

“You come to a World Cup as a journalist to work, to share the stresses, the pressures but also the enjoyments and the fascination of it — and to share that with your readers, your listeners, your viewers.  </figure>BY: KALEB CENTER CSC Sports Information&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. - December 7, 2022 -&nbsp;A hotly-contested Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game with 16 lead changes and eight ties turned out the wrong way for the Chadron State College men's basketball team Wednesday night in the Denver suburb of Lakewood. With barely under a minute left in overtime, Colorado Christian's Noah Kon forced a turnover and converted it into a layup for what proved to be the winning basket in the 80-79 verdict. To complicate matters, the Eagles threw the ball out of bounds early in their ensuing possession. That allowed the Cougars to play keep-a-way and nearly run down the shot clock before they were forced to shoot. The shot missed, the Eagles got the rebound, raced toward their basket, but weren't able to connect with what would have been their game-winner. Chadron State led 34-28 at halftime after one of last week's RMAC Players of the Week,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/josh-robinson/8517">Josh Robinson</a>, stole the ball and made a resounding dunk at the buzzer.&nbsp; The Eagles were up by eight twice early in the second half, but neither team led by more than three in the final five minutes. After CSC center&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/porter-anderson/8506">Porter Anderson</a>&nbsp;put the Eagles ahead 73-72 on a put-back with 34 seconds left in regulation, the Cougars' Isaiah Alonzo tied the count by making the first of two free throws with 16 seconds remaining. He missed the second attempt, the Eagles got the rebound but couldn't make what would have been the winning shot prior to overtime. Colorado Christian shot 52.5% (32-61) from the field and the Eagles 43% (27-63), but CSC outscored the hosts 19-10 from the free throw line.&nbsp; Both teams made six 3-pointers. The Cougars were led by super senior DJ McDonald with 25 points that included four treys.&nbsp; Both Kon and Jason Gallant added 17 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/isaiah-wyatt/8518">Isaiah Wyatt</a>&nbsp;paced the Eagles with 17 points,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bryce-latimer/8513">Bryce Latimer</a>&nbsp;scored 15, Robinson 11 and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/mj-foust/8511">MJ Foust</a>&nbsp;10. Meanwhile the homestanding Colorado Christian Cougars hit 52.9 percent, including 7-of-14 from three-point range, as CCU won 85-52 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Eagles fell to 1-8 (1-2 RMAC) while CCU improved to 6-3 (2-1 RMAC) on the season. CCU was able to break open a double-digit lead in the first quarter with a layup by senior forward India Cole, making it 15-4 a little more than halfway through the first period. The second half went to CCU. The Cougars led by as many as 35 points, late in the fourth quarter. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ashayla-powers/4644">Ashayla Powers</a>&nbsp;scored 14 points to lead the Eagles in scoring.&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/allison-olsen/8523">Allison Olsen</a>&nbsp;added 12 points to put up a career high.
