C1-7 All District Team Announced Monday

Alliance High School Head Football Coach Chris Seebohm discusses the 2022 season. Following the season, Seebohm announced he will step down as Head Coach.&nbsp; 

He is a 1997 AHS Graduate. He played defensive back at Chadron state for 3 seasons and served as an assistant at Alliance in 2000 and 2001. He was an assistant at Greybull, Wy in 2003 and at Sidney High School in 2004-05....serving one season as head Coach in 2006.&nbsp; He returned to his hometown and was an Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator with the Bulldogs&nbsp; from 2007-2014, and became Head Coach in 2015. All told, he Coached for 22 seasons, 18 in Alliance.&nbsp; The Bulldogs made play-off appearances in 2015, 2018 and 2019.

&nbsp; It was a tale of two halves Saturday when the Chadron State Eagles took a 24-3 halftime lead, but the Colorado Mesa Mavericks outscored the hosts 28-7 in the second half to tie the score at 31-31 with 22 seconds remaining in regulation and then won the game 38-37 in overtime. The Mavericks had first possession in overtime, and, on the third play, scored on a 19-yard pass from quarterback Gavin Herberg to a wide open Jacob Whitmer in the right side of the end zone. It was the Mavs' first lead since they were ahead 3-0 lead midway in the first period. Lucas Ruiz-Diaz kicked the extra point that proved to be the winning point. Chadron State used six plays to score its overtime touchdown. Massive tailback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/jalen-starks/4621">Jalen Starks</a>&nbsp;leaped into the end zone from two yards out for the score.&nbsp; Before that he'd also rushed three times for 18 yards during the 25-yard drive. During Starks' TD, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called on a Mesa State player.&nbsp; That put the ball on the 1 ½-yard line for the conversion attempt, so the Eagles decided to go for two points. Starks got the hand off again, but was immediately met by a couple of Mavericks, who downed him shy of the goal line, ending the game.&nbsp; "It came down to that last play," Chadron State Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/jay-long/503">Jay Long</a>&nbsp;said.&nbsp; "It was a heartbreaker for our guys and particularly the 15 seniors who were playing their last game at home. I feel horrible for them. If we'd scored on that play, we'd all be feeling great now, but we didn't." It was Chadron State's 12th overtime game.&nbsp; The most recent was two years ago when Ruiz-Diaz booted a 38-yard field goal to give Mesa a 10-7 win in Grand Junction.&nbsp; Twenty years ago this fall, when the Eagles were playing their third overtime game, they won 31-30 in Grand Junction when linebacker Amos Davis blocked the Mavericks' extra point attempt in the second extra session. Chadron State is now 6-6 in its OT contests. Both teams have won three times this fall.&nbsp; The Eagles are 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mavericks are 2-6. While Mesa scored first in Saturday's game on a Ruiz-Diaz's 40-yard field goal midway in the first period, the Eagles dominated the remainder of the opening half both offensively and defensively. &nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron State tied the score when Gunnar Jones kicked a 22-yard field goal with 2:42 left in the first period.&nbsp; It was set up when&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/grant-swenson/4622">Grant Swenson</a>&nbsp;threw a wobbly end-around pass to fellow wideout Tommy Thomas for a 29-yard gain. The Eagles posted three touchdowns in the second period to build their 24-3 halftime bulge. Starks scored the first and third TDs on runs of one and three yards, sandwiched around a 12-yard pass from quarterback Heath Beemiller to wide receiver Ahlonte Hair. The first scoring drive was comprised of six running plays, none of them longer than eight yards, after Mesa was called for roughing the passer. The second drive involved 10 plays for 63 yards that opened with two Beemiller-to-Hair passes for 17 yards and included three rushes by Dorian Collier for 26 yards before Hair caught the touchdown toss in the end zone. The Eagles also scored two minutes before halftime on a 49-yard drive that featured Beemiller's passes of 14 yards to&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/ali-musa/4235">Ali Musa</a>&nbsp;and 18 yards to Ro Ambercrombie, to set the pins for Starks' three-yard romp up the middle. Along with the three-touchdown lead on the scoreboard, Chadron State owned a 232-to-31-yard margin in total offense at halftime.&nbsp; Much of that was because the Eagles' defense had sacked the Mavericks' two alternate quarterbacks—Kia'l Keone and Gavin Herberg--seven times for 40 yards in losses, and the passes they completed netted just 46 yards. Keone and Herberg got the call because Mesa's primary quarterback, Karst Hunter, who had completed 162 of the Mavs' 182 passes in the first eight games this fall, was on the trip but did not suit up for the game. The complexion of the game was much different in the second half. &nbsp;The Mesa quarterbacks threw some crisp passes adding up to more than 300 yards and Eagles never sacked them again.&nbsp; Keone started the second half at quarterback, and before long, he connected with Keenan Brown on a 46-yard strike for the Mavs' first touchdown. Herberg was the signal caller four minutes later when he threw a 47-yard linedrive to Whitmer for another TD.&nbsp; Both passes were into the brisk west wind and the receivers were on the run when they made over-the-shoulder catches. &nbsp;Suddenly the score was 24-17. The Eagles retaliated late in the third frame by going 47 yards in 10 plays after Thomas returned the kickoff 28 yards.&nbsp; The big gainer was an 18-yard pass to Swenson. Five plays later, Beemiller rolled out and fired a dart that Swenson caught in the end zone for a six-yard touchdown.&nbsp; CSC was back on top by two touchdowns. However, 15 seconds into the fourth quarter, Harberg found Brown wide open and hit him with a 36-yard TD pass.&nbsp; After the Eagles' next drive stalled when a high snap from center forced Beemiller to retrieve the ball behind him for a 12-yard loss and necessitated a punt.&nbsp; The Mavericks reached the Eagles' 25 when safety&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/harvey-reynolds/4245">Harvey Reynolds</a>&nbsp;intercepted Herberg's pass and returned it 20 yards to the original line of scrimmage. Neither team could sustain its next drive, and the RMAC rivals traded punts. Jones's boot into the wind went out of bounds in the coffin corner, forcing Mesa to take possession at its own two-yard line.&nbsp; It looked as if the Eagles had the Mavs right where they wanted them. But on the first play, Herberg, throwing out of the end zone, hit the talented Brown, who made a diving catch at midfield for a 48-yard gain.&nbsp; Next, Herberg completed a 29-yard toss to tight end Jacob Whitmer at the CSC 19. With the clock running down, things got dicey. &nbsp; Mesa continued to drive and picked up a first and goal at the Eagles' eight. With just over a minute remaining, Mesa's Myles Newble attempted to run wide. CSC linebacker&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/joey-geil/4203">Joey Geil</a>&nbsp;sniffed out the play and grabbed him for a 12-yard loss. Even though Newble is a running back and was not injured, a referee assessed the Eagles for a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty, moving the ball back to the CSC six. Following an incomplete pass and a one-yard completion, Chadron State was called for pass interference, giving the visitors a first and goal at the two. The first three plays went for naught before Herberg ran straight ahead and dove into the end zone for the touchdown with 22 seconds left. &nbsp;After Ruiz-Diaz added the extra point, the game was headed for overtime. Mesa finished with 438 total net yards, gaining 407 of them in the second half.&nbsp; The Mavs managed just 34 yards rushing, but Herberg completed 20 of 31 passes for 296 yards and Keone eight of 13 for 106.&nbsp; Brown caught 10 of the passes for 195 yards while Whitmer grabbed six the 120 to go with their two touchdowns apiece. The Eagles had 370 total yards, including 150 yards rushing. Collier carried 13 times for 90 yards and Starks 22 for 69. Beemiller completed 24 of 36 passes for 191 yards. Thomas caught six for 68 and Hair six for 57. Both teams had some busy tacklers. Freshman linebacker Ritchie McCormack paced the Eagles with 10 while Geil made nine,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/hunter-o-connor/4610">Hunter O'Connor</a>&nbsp;seven and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/brendan-brehmer/4186">Brendan Brehmer</a>&nbsp;and Reynolds both with six.  </figure>BY: CON MARSHALL CSC Sports Information&nbsp; It was a tale of two halves Saturday when the Chadron State Eagles took a 24-3 halftime lead, but the Colorado Mesa Mavericks outscored the hosts 28-7 in the second half to tie the score at 31-31 with 22 seconds remaining in regulation and then won the game 38-37 in overtime. The Mavericks had first possession in overtime, and, on the third play, scored on a 19-yard pass from quarterback Gavin Herberg to a wide open Jacob Whitmer in the right side of the end zone. It was the Mavs' first lead since they were ahead 3-0 lead midway in the first period. Lucas Ruiz-Diaz kicked the extra point that proved to be the winning point. Chadron State used six plays to score its overtime touchdown. Massive tailback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/jalen-starks/4621">Jalen Starks</a>&nbsp;leaped into the end zone from two yards out for the score.&nbsp; Before that he'd also rushed three times for 18 yards during the 25-yard drive. During Starks' TD, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called on a Mesa State player.&nbsp; That put the ball on the 1 ½-yard line for the conversion attempt, so the Eagles decided to go for two points. Starks got the hand off again, but was immediately met by a couple of Mavericks, who downed him shy of the goal line, ending the game.&nbsp; "It came down to that last play," Chadron State Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/jay-long/503">Jay Long</a>&nbsp;said.&nbsp; "It was a heartbreaker for our guys and particularly the 15 seniors who were playing their last game at home. I feel horrible for them. If we'd scored on that play, we'd all be feeling great now, but we didn't." It was Chadron State's 12th overtime game.&nbsp; The most recent was two years ago when Ruiz-Diaz booted a 38-yard field goal to give Mesa a 10-7 win in Grand Junction.&nbsp; Twenty years ago this fall, when the Eagles were playing their third overtime game, they won 31-30 in Grand Junction when linebacker Amos Davis blocked the Mavericks' extra point attempt in the second extra session. Chadron State is now 6-6 in its OT contests. Both teams have won three times this fall.&nbsp; The Eagles are 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mavericks are 2-6. While Mesa scored first in Saturday's game on a Ruiz-Diaz's 40-yard field goal midway in the first period, the Eagles dominated the remainder of the opening half both offensively and defensively. &nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron State tied the score when Gunnar Jones kicked a 22-yard field goal with 2:42 left in the first period.&nbsp; It was set up when&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/grant-swenson/4622">Grant Swenson</a>&nbsp;threw a wobbly end-around pass to fellow wideout Tommy Thomas for a 29-yard gain. The Eagles posted three touchdowns in the second period to build their 24-3 halftime bulge. Starks scored the first and third TDs on runs of one and three yards, sandwiched around a 12-yard pass from quarterback Heath Beemiller to wide receiver Ahlonte Hair. The first scoring drive was comprised of six running plays, none of them longer than eight yards, after Mesa was called for roughing the passer. The second drive involved 10 plays for 63 yards that opened with two Beemiller-to-Hair passes for 17 yards and included three rushes by Dorian Collier for 26 yards before Hair caught the touchdown toss in the end zone. The Eagles also scored two minutes before halftime on a 49-yard drive that featured Beemiller's passes of 14 yards to&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/ali-musa/4235">Ali Musa</a>&nbsp;and 18 yards to Ro Ambercrombie, to set the pins for Starks' three-yard romp up the middle. Along with the three-touchdown lead on the scoreboard, Chadron State owned a 232-to-31-yard margin in total offense at halftime.&nbsp; Much of that was because the Eagles' defense had sacked the Mavericks' two alternate quarterbacks—Kia'l Keone and Gavin Herberg--seven times for 40 yards in losses, and the passes they completed netted just 46 yards. Keone and Herberg got the call because Mesa's primary quarterback, Karst Hunter, who had completed 162 of the Mavs' 182 passes in the first eight games this fall, was on the trip but did not suit up for the game. The complexion of the game was much different in the second half. &nbsp;The Mesa quarterbacks threw some crisp passes adding up to more than 300 yards and Eagles never sacked them again.&nbsp; Keone started the second half at quarterback, and before long, he connected with Keenan Brown on a 46-yard strike for the Mavs' first touchdown. Herberg was the signal caller four minutes later when he threw a 47-yard linedrive to Whitmer for another TD.&nbsp; Both passes were into the brisk west wind and the receivers were on the run when they made over-the-shoulder catches. &nbsp;Suddenly the score was 24-17. The Eagles retaliated late in the third frame by going 47 yards in 10 plays after Thomas returned the kickoff 28 yards.&nbsp; The big gainer was an 18-yard pass to Swenson. Five plays later, Beemiller rolled out and fired a dart that Swenson caught in the end zone for a six-yard touchdown.&nbsp; CSC was back on top by two touchdowns. However, 15 seconds into the fourth quarter, Harberg found Brown wide open and hit him with a 36-yard TD pass.&nbsp; After the Eagles' next drive stalled when a high snap from center forced Beemiller to retrieve the ball behind him for a 12-yard loss and necessitated a punt.&nbsp; The Mavericks reached the Eagles' 25 when safety&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/harvey-reynolds/4245">Harvey Reynolds</a>&nbsp;intercepted Herberg's pass and returned it 20 yards to the original line of scrimmage. Neither team could sustain its next drive, and the RMAC rivals traded punts. Jones's boot into the wind went out of bounds in the coffin corner, forcing Mesa to take possession at its own two-yard line.&nbsp; It looked as if the Eagles had the Mavs right where they wanted them. But on the first play, Herberg, throwing out of the end zone, hit the talented Brown, who made a diving catch at midfield for a 48-yard gain.&nbsp; Next, Herberg completed a 29-yard toss to tight end Jacob Whitmer at the CSC 19. With the clock running down, things got dicey. &nbsp; Mesa continued to drive and picked up a first and goal at the Eagles' eight. With just over a minute remaining, Mesa's Myles Newble attempted to run wide. CSC linebacker&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/joey-geil/4203">Joey Geil</a>&nbsp;sniffed out the play and grabbed him for a 12-yard loss. Even though Newble is a running back and was not injured, a referee assessed the Eagles for a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty, moving the ball back to the CSC six. Following an incomplete pass and a one-yard completion, Chadron State was called for pass interference, giving the visitors a first and goal at the two. The first three plays went for naught before Herberg ran straight ahead and dove into the end zone for the touchdown with 22 seconds left. &nbsp;After Ruiz-Diaz added the extra point, the game was headed for overtime. Mesa finished with 438 total net yards, gaining 407 of them in the second half.&nbsp; The Mavs managed just 34 yards rushing, but Herberg completed 20 of 31 passes for 296 yards and Keone eight of 13 for 106.&nbsp; Brown caught 10 of the passes for 195 yards while Whitmer grabbed six the 120 to go with their two touchdowns apiece. The Eagles had 370 total yards, including 150 yards rushing. Collier carried 13 times for 90 yards and Starks 22 for 69. Beemiller completed 24 of 36 passes for 191 yards. Thomas caught six for 68 and Hair six for 57. Both teams had some busy tacklers. Freshman linebacker Ritchie McCormack paced the Eagles with 10 while Geil made nine,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/hunter-o-connor/4610">Hunter O'Connor</a>&nbsp;seven and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/brendan-brehmer/4186">Brendan Brehmer</a>&nbsp;and Reynolds both with six. Mesa rallies to top Eagles 38-37 in OT

The Alliance Bulldog Football team along with Coaches, Families and Fans celebrated the 2022 season with their end of year banquet Thursday night.&nbsp;

Head Coach Chris Seebohm thanked the AHS administration, parents, fans and all who were involved with this years team. He payed special tribute to this years Senior Class, thanking them for their leadership and strong work ethic. Coach also told a few&nbsp; "behind the scenes" stories about each Senior, which brought a lot of smiles and laughs.&nbsp; Despite an 0-9 record, Coach Seebohm said the attitude and effort was always very good and the team&nbsp; played hard through each game.&nbsp; 

The Senior Class this year...Eli Blanco, Tyzen Brown, Owen Grant, Lucas Smith, Carson Bair,&nbsp; Nick Wright, AJ Stanec, Angel Acosta, John Kollars, Austin Betancud, Tristin Grubham and&nbsp;foreign exchange student, Antonio Caruso, from Sicily, who had never played American football.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Coach Seebohm also gave special thanks to Assistant Coach Preston Walls,&nbsp; who will be leaving Alliance for another job opportuinty.&nbsp; Preston has been as assistant for the past 6 seasons.&nbsp; Coach Seebohm presented the Team Awards, which were voted on by players and coaches.

Coach Seebohm announced at the end of the season, that he is stepping down as Bulldog Head Coach.&nbsp; &nbsp; He is a 1997 AHS graduate.&nbsp; He played defensive back for Chadron State College for 3 seasons and then served as an AHS assistant coach, under Jeff Tomlin in 2000 and 2001.&nbsp; He was an assistant coach at Graybull, Wy for one season, then an assistant at Sidney High School in 2004-05 and Head Coach in 2006.&nbsp; He returned to his hometown and was an assistant coach and defensive coordinator with the Bulldogs from 2007 to 2014 under Travis Hawk, before taking over as head Coach in 2014.&nbsp; In total,&nbsp; Seebhom has Coached for 22 years, 18 with his alma mater.&nbsp;

In his closing remarks, Coach Seebohm said while wins and losses are important, the friendships and memories are what will be remembered the most.&nbsp; He will continue to coach track &amp; field and teach math at AHS. He is looking forward to spending time with family.&nbsp; He finished by saying ..."Coaching in his hometown was his Dream Job".&nbsp;&nbsp;

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson is listed as day-to-day for the game against Minnesota on Saturday because of an arm injury that knocked him out of last week's game.

Interim coach Mickey Joseph said Thompson was held out of practice Tuesday and backups Chubba Purdy and Logan Smothers split snaps evenly with the No. 1 offense.

Thompson, the Texas transfer who has started every game for the Huskers (3-5, 2-3 Big Ten), was hurt in the second quarter while throwing an interception. He got hit on the elbow on his right (throwing) arm, causing numbness in his hand.

Smothers played the rest of the first half and Purdy took over at the start of the second.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-nebraska-cornhuskers-casey-thompson-chase-brown-8eb829011997d9ac46fabc9889ba4a13">The Cornhuskers, who lost 26-9, managed only 29 yards after halftime.</a>

Smothers is considered the better runner and Purdy the better passer. Smothers' only start was last year in a 28-21 loss at Iowa. Purdy is in his first year at Nebraska after transferring from Florida State.

Joseph said he went with Purdy in the second half because he thought the Huskers, down double digits, would need to pass more. The Huskers had only 20 offensive plays in the second half and passed on eight, with Purdy completing three for 15 yards and throwing an ill-advised interception.

“He plays nervous sometimes and I just want him to breathe and calm down because (then) he plays better,” Joseph said. “He’s got to have more poise behind the center when he goes in a game. He wants to make a play so bad that he makes a bad play. We've got to do a better job as coaches to get him ready.”

Still unclear if Thompson will play Saturday

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are trading star-crossed pass rusher Bradley Chubb to Miami for a package that includes the Dolphins' first-round draft pick next year.

The Broncos (3-5) also get running back Chase Edmonds and a 2024 fourth-rounder from the Dolphins (5-3), who are getting a 2025 fifth-rounder from Denver.

Chubb's departure comes a year after the Broncos traded franchise sacks leader Von Miller, who helped the Rams win the Super Bowl in February before signing with the Buffalo Bills this offseason.

“Decisions like this are not easy,” GM George Paton said after a record-setting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/minnesota-vikings-buffalo-bills-jacksonville-jaguars-miami-dolphins-san-francisco-49ers-b2c8a6d7bd8994e4681afbc47dae07f8">dozen players</a>&nbsp;were dealt on NFL trade deadline day. “... but ultimately we always have to do what’s best for the team. And we don’t make this decision if we’re not confident in the players and the coaches on this team.”

Paton said the depth at edge rusher was strong enough for him to part with Chubb, and "the draft value was significant. We just believed it was too good to pass up at the end of the day. And it’s no secret we need picks. It’s going to help us continue to build our football team.”

The Broncos went 3-6 after Miller's exit and Paton said he wanted fans and players alike to know this is no surrender.

“We believe in this football team,” Paton said. “We believe in our leadership. We believe in our depth.”

He also believes his lurching offense is going to come around.

Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler also were coveted by other teams, but Paton chose to keep his receiving group intact as the team tries to develop more chemistry on offense.

“We wanted to keep our young, talented receivers," Paton said. "We started to get some rhythm in our last game versus Jacksonville and we just feel good about where we're going. We're trending in the right direction with Jeudy and Hamler and Courtland (Sutton) and we didn't want to break that up.”

Paton worked out a secondary deal in acquiring fifth-year pass rusher Jacob Martin from the New York Jets in a trade that included an exchange of 2024 draft picks with the Broncos giving up a fourth-rounder and the Jets a fifth-rounder.

The first-round pick Paton obtained in the Chubb trade is the one that the Dolphins acquired from San Francisco that allowed the 49ers to move up and draft quarterback Trey Lance in 2021.

The Dolphins forfeited their own 2023 first-round selection and a third-round selection in the 2024 draft after an NFL investigation found that Miami violated the league’s anti-tampering policy regarding communication with Tom Brady.

Chubb was the fifth overall pick in the 2018 draft, a key part of Denver's stellar defense and a locker room leader, although some Broncos fans still smart over John Elway's bypassing of Wyoming QB Josh Allen, who went two picks later to Buffalo.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-nfl-sports-bradley-chubb-45c7d719442c3b3ae5cc1ceff7a95c6d">Chubb has 5½ sacks</a>&nbsp;this season — although none in the past three weeks — and a pair of forced fumbles after coming off his first fully healthy offseason since his rookie year when he had a career-best 12 sacks playing alongside Miller.

With the Broncos (3-5) off to a bad start under the Nathaniel Hackett-Russell Wilson coupling, Paton found more value in what he could get for Chubb in next April's draft than in the production he'd get from the former North Carolina State star over the next nine games.

Even if the Broncos' record were flipped, Paton said, “we would have made the trade regardless. We just felt the value was too good. ... Moving forward, we have other holes to fill on the offensive side of the ball.”

Paton had traded away his first- and second-round picks this year and next in the blockbuster deal that brought Wilson over from Seattle last spring.

By avoiding the megadeal on the horizon had he kept Chubb, Paton now has the financial flexibility to re-sign rising defensive line star Dre'Mont Jones to a big extension. “He is one of our core players," Paton said. “We want him here a long time."

Chubb said last week that the speculation he was a top trade target was “kind of cool,” in that “it lets you know that I’m playing good ball where other teams notice it as well.” But he added that he preferred to stay “in Denver long term. I've got my house. I got everything. I'm comfortable.”

Chubb is making nearly $14 million on his fifth-year option this season. But his career features almost as many missed games (25) as sacks (26).

He missed most of last season following surgeries on both ankles to remove bone spurs and didn't have a single sack in seven games upon his return. He also missed most of 2019 with a torn ACL, but bounced back in 2020 with a Pro Bowl season.

Chubb's departure comes at a time the Broncos are hurting in the pass rush department with Randy Gregory (knee) and Baron Browning (wrist) on IR. Paton said Gregory probably won't be ready to return for Denver's next game, at Tennessee on Nov. 13.

(AP) — The Denver Broncos are trading star-crossed pass rusher Bradley Chubb to Miami for a package that includes the Dolphins' first-round draft pick next year.The Broncos (3-5) also get running back Chase Edmonds and a 2024 fourth-rounder from the Dolphins (5-3), who are getting a 2025 fifth-rounder from Denver.Chubb's departure comes a year after the Broncos traded franchise sacks leader Von Miller, who helped the Rams win the Super Bowl in February before signing with the Buffalo Bills this offseason.“Decisions like this are not easy,” GM George Paton said after a record-setting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/minnesota-vikings-buffalo-bills-jacksonville-jaguars-miami-dolphins-san-francisco-49ers-b2c8a6d7bd8994e4681afbc47dae07f8">dozen players</a>&nbsp;were dealt on NFL trade deadline day. “... but ultimately we always have to do what’s best for the team. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Illinois' breakout season keeps getting better.

The Illini's 26-9 win over Nebraska on Saturday was nothing flashy, just workmanlike. Chase Brown and the top defense in the country did what they've been doing all year, and now No. 17 Illinois is on a six-game win streak for the first time since 2011.

“Our guys are locked into the moment,” second-year coach Bret Bielema said. “When you get better and better, everyone wants to talk about where you’re going to end up. What we need to concentrate on is the journey, and to get to where we are today has been probably one of the most enjoyable journeys I’ve ever been on in my life.”

Brown rushed for 149 yards and scored on consecutive series in the second quarter to help the Big Ten West-leading Illini (7-1, 4-1) beat the Cornhuskers for the third year in a row and secure their first winning regular-season record since 2007.

“I tell these guys all the time that I’ve been around some championship teams, and this team is that same caliber if not better,” Bielema said. “We're an exceptional defense and we have playmakers on literally both sides of the ball and in the kicking game.”

Nebraska (3-5, 2-3) committed four turnovers and dropped its 20th straight against a Top 25 opponent.

The Huskers lost quarterback Casey Thompson to a right arm injury in the second quarter. Interim coach Mickey Joseph said Thompson's elbow got hit, causing finger numbness. Logan Smothers finished the second quarter, and Chubba Purdy played the entire second half.

Illinois' Tommy DeVito was 20 of 22 for 179 yards and two touchdowns. His 91% completion rate was a Memorial Stadium record for visiting quarterbacks with at least 20 attempts.

The Illini held Nebraska to 29 yards on 20 plays in the second half and 248 for the game, the fewest by the Huskers since they finished with the same number against Michigan State in 2018. Trey Palmer, coming off a school-record 237-yard receiving performance against Purdue, caught one pass for 1 yard.

“Our guys took away some of their better players," Bielema said, "and obviously when their quarterback went out that made a big difference.”

Brown, the national rushing leader, extended his school-record streak of games with at least 100 yards to nine.

He scored on a 1-yard run and a 12-yard reception in the second quarter to put Illinois up 20-9 at half.

His short TD run came two plays after his twin brother Sydney Brown intercepted Thompson’s tipped pass and returned it 37 yards to the Nebraska 11.

The Huskers then went three-and-out, and DeVito finished an 11-play, 72-yard drive with his pass to Chase Brown with 23 seconds left in the half.

Brown also made a key downfield block to give Isaiah Williams a clear path to the end zone on a 46-yard catch-and-run on Illinois' opening possession.

Williams’ unforced error in the second half put Nebraska in position to cut into the lead. Williams caught a pass in open field and, untouched, dropped the ball at his 23 for the Illini’s first lost fumble in five games.

The Huskers gave the ball right back when Sydney Brown picked off his second pass on Purdy’s ill-advised throw into the middle of the field, and they never advanced past their own 26 on their final four possessions.

“We came out with a great game plan and didn’t execute,” tight end Travis Vokolek said, “so I give all props to Illinois’ defense. Great team. Tough-nosed football team.”

Illinois: The Illini beat a West opponent for the fifth straight time. Brown, who came in with a nation-high 27.4 carries per game, ran 32 times and the Illini had a 16-minute advantage in time of possession.

Nebraska: Everything changed for the Huskers when Thompson went out in the second quarter. The Huskers gained just 34 yards the rest of the game.

Illinois missed out on three points, calling timeout just before Caleb Griffin split the uprights with what would have been a 52-yard field goal. When the Illini lined up for the second try, they were called for a false start and forced to punt.

The Illini will be in line for a promotion after three teams ahead of them in the Top 25 lost. They haven't been in the top 15 since 2007.

Illinois: Hosts Michigan State for the teams' first meeting since 2019.

#17 Illinois tops Huskers 26-9

&nbsp; Defenses dominated Saturday when the Chadron State Eagles downed the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys 17-3 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game played under perfect weather conditions in Chadron. The combined 20 points scored are the fewest in the 30-year series, and each year since 2000, at least 40 points were posted on the scoreboard.&nbsp; In 2017 the total was 90 point and the next year it was 81.&nbsp; The quarterbacks could attest to the defensive aggressiveness. The Eagles sacked Highlands' Gage Guardiola eight times and the Cowboys dumped Chadron State's Heath Beemiller four times before he got rid of the ball.&nbsp; The Eagles are now 3-6 overall and Highlands is 3-4. Both are 3-4 in the conference.&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron State scored first on its opening possession, when Gunnar Jones kicked a 37-yard field goal just four minutes into the game.&nbsp; A 37-yard pass from Beemiller to Grant Swensen in the middle of the field set up the score. There were just 41 seconds left in the first half when Highlands' Will McDaniel tied the score with his 42-yard boot. Three passes totaling 40 yards thrown Guardiola to pesky wide receiver Quavon Beckford preceded field goal. The score was not tied long. On the Eagles' second play following the Cowboys' short kickoff, Beemiller hooked up with wide receiver Ahlonte Hair on about a 25-yard toss along the north sidelines.&nbsp; Like a tight rope walker, Hair stayed in bounds while outrunning and out-juking a couple Highlands' defenders to complete the 52-yard play, the day's longest of any dimension. Jones's extra point put the Eagles ahead 10-3. The game's only other touchdown came with 4:34 left in the third quarter, when the Eagles put together a 72-yard drive that includes the 10 yards Beemiller lost when he was sacked midway in the drive. But the junior quarterback, playing in his second game after missing three because of a knee injury, got up off the turf and avoided the Cowboys' persistent rush to complete his next three passes.&nbsp; They were a 16-yarder to running back&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/jalen-starks/4621">Jalen Starks</a>, who turned the corner and romped upfield after making the catch, an 11-yard strike to tight end&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/peter-krohn/4596">Peter Krohn</a>&nbsp;over the middle and a short toss to wideout Jamal Browder, who made the grab in traffic and fought his way into the end zone to complete the eight-yard-yard play.&nbsp; Jones closed out the scoring by adding the PAT. Scoring opportunities were rare for both teams. Midway in the second quarter after the Eagles tried to run out of punt formation on fourth down and failed. Late in the game, three interceptions kept the teams from rallying. The Eagles got the first and the last picks, both on tipped balls. Both are 3-4 in the conference.&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron State scored first on its opening possession, when Gunnar Jones kicked a 37-yard field goal just four minutes into the game.&nbsp; A 37-yard pass from Beemiller to Grant Swensen in the middle of the field set up the score. There were just 41 seconds left in the first half when Highlands' Will McDaniel tied the score with his 42-yard boot. Three passes totaling 40 yards thrown Guardiola to pesky wide receiver Quavon Beckford preceded field goal. The score was not tied long. On the Eagles' second play following the Cowboys' short kickoff, Beemiller hooked up with wide receiver Ahlonte Hair on about a 25-yard toss along the north sidelines.&nbsp; Like a tight rope walker, Hair stayed in bounds while outrunning and out-juking a couple Highlands' defenders to complete the 52-yard play, the day's longest of any dimension. Jones's extra point put the Eagles ahead 10-3. The game's only other touchdown came with 4:34 left in the third quarter, when the Eagles put together a 72-yard drive that includes the 10 yards Beemiller lost when he was sacked midway in the drive. But the junior quarterback, playing in his second game after missing three because of a knee injury, got up off the turf and avoided the Cowboys' persistent rush to complete his next three passes.&nbsp; They were a 16-yarder to running back&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/jalen-starks/4621">Jalen Starks</a>, who turned the corner and romped upfield after making the catch, an 11-yard strike to tight end&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/peter-krohn/4596">Peter Krohn</a>&nbsp;over the middle and a short toss to wideout Jamal Browder, who made the grab in traffic and fought his way into the end zone to complete the eight-yard-yard play.&nbsp; Jones closed out the scoring by adding the PAT. Late in the game, three interceptions kept the teams from rallying. The Eagles got the first and the last picks, both on tipped balls. Some of the most dramatic images in World Series history are 
ingrained in the minds of baseball fans thanks to television coverage. 
This year’s World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston 
Astros will surely bring another timeless highlight to the <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/03/2021-world-series-ratings-braves-astros-game-6-draws-14point3-million.html">12 million or so viewers</a> expected to watch.

Yet the first 43 World Series weren’t televised at all. It wasn’t 
until the 1947 series between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers –
 75 years ago – that fans could watch their favorite players duke it out
 on screen. 

As I detail in my book “<a href="https://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/bison-original/9780803248250/">Center Field Shot: A History of Baseball on Television</a>,”
 which I co-authored with Robert Bellamy, the telecasts became a 
sensation. They drew millions of Americans to a new medium at a time 
when there were no national networks, only a handful of stations and 
somewhere between 50,000 and 60,000 TVs in the entire country.

In August 1947, the television industry anticipated a possible 
all-New York World Series: The Yankees had a huge lead in the American 
League, while the Dodgers also held a substantial one in the National 
League.  

If the two teams met in October, New York’s three television stations – run by NBC ABC, and the now-extinct <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/DuMont-Television-Network">DuMont</a> – decided they wanted to cover the games.

But the rights to televise the games were held by the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Mutual-Broadcasting-System">Mutual Broadcasting System</a>,
 a radio network that had no television division. Thus, Mutual would 
need to farm out the coverage to one or more New York stations.

Although no national television network existed at the time, NBC, 
DuMont and CBS did have the means to link stations on the Eastern 
Seaboard through a combination of coaxial cable, microwave and 
over-the-air broadcast transmissions, expanding the potential audience 
for the World Series. The Series would air on eight stations in four 
markets: New York City, Philadelphia, Washington and Schenectady, New 
York.

While the Yankees-Dodgers series materialized, the televising of the Series almost didn’t. 

The predictable stumbling block was money. Baseball commissioner <a href="https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/chandler-happy">Albert B. “Happy” Chandler</a>
 wanted $100,000 for the television rights to the Series. Gillette, the 
sponsor of the radio coverage on the Mutual Broadcasting System, balked 
at the steep price given television’s limited penetration – only 50,000 
to 60,000 U.S. households owned TVs at the time. The radio rights to 
reach the nation’s 29 million homes with radios had cost Mutual only 
$175,000.

Initial negotiations produced an offer of $60,000 from two sponsors: Gillette and the Ford Motor Company. New York’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Liebmann">Liebmann Breweries</a>
 offered to meet Chandler’s $100,000 demand, but the commissioner 
refused because he did not want beer ads when youngsters would be 
prominent members of the audience.

Even before a coverage deal had been finalized, bars, restaurants, 
television dealers, department stores, automobile dealerships and movie 
theaters started advertising the event, urging customers to come by to 
watch the World Series on television. And in the days and weeks leading 
up to the Fall Classic, the demand for television sets spiked. 

The excitement pressured Chandler and the sponsors to reach a compromise.   

Finally, on Sept. 26, just four days before Game 1 at Yankee Stadium, Chandler, Gillette and Ford <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-BC/BC-1947/1947-10-06-BC.pdf">agreed to $65,000 for the rights to televise the World Series</a>.
 Production costs added another $35,000 to the sponsors’ bill. Mutual, 
Gillette and Ford also agreed to allow all three New York TV stations 
and those connected to them to broadcast the game, providing the widest 
possible exposure.

Initial industry estimates had the Series reaching between 600,000 
and 700,000 viewers, many of them located in the bars and restaurants 
where a substantial number of the nation’s first television receivers 
were located.  

But that forecast ended up being conservative. Although home viewing for the seven games was substantial – 450,000 in a <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-18.pdf">Hooper rating survey commissioned by Billboard</a>
 – the out-of-home viewing numbers were extraordinary: Another 3.5 
million were estimated to have viewed the World Series in public 
locales.

Hooper’s survey found that an average of 82 customers showed up at 
each of these public locations to watch at least some of the World 
Series. Variety reported that bar owners saw a 500% increase in patrons 
during the Series, with some offering reservations to their regulars for
 a choice location near the TV set.

What viewers from those choice seats saw was primitive by today’s 
standards. The screen was usually small – 12 diagonal inches or less. 
The low-definition images were black and white and came from just a few 
cameras. No extreme close-ups were possible. There was no instant 
replay, so fans had to pay attention or the moment was lost. 

But for the first time, they were seeing the World Series live, and for free.

The audience liked what they saw. <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-11.pdf">Billboard</a>,
 quoting The Newark Evening News, reported that TV “audiences hung on 
every turn of the video cameras and the ‘oohs and aahs’ at a slide or 
strikeout were something radio broadcasters would give their eye teeth 
to hear.”

It didn’t hurt that <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1947_WS.shtml">the 1947 World Series</a> ended up being so dramatic. The Yankees prevailed in seven games, but Brooklyn owned the two greatest moments.

In the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4, Dodgers pitch hitter <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWjpOAy5zCM">Cookie Lavagetto ended Yankee starter Bill Biven’s no-hit bid</a> with a two-out hit, driving in two runs and sending the Dodgers to a 3-2 win. Then, in Game 6, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SrtxVs8uMI">Al Gionfriddo’s stunning catch of Joe DiMaggio’s deep drive to left field</a> helped preserve an 8-6 Dodgers victory, leading legendary Dodgers broadcaster <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Red_Barber.html?id=lWhgEAAAQBAJ">Red Barber</a> to exclaim, “Oh, Doctor!”

The Washington broadcasts even reached the White House, where 
President Harry S. Truman, his staff and the D.C. press corps watched 
some of the contests. The <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Televiser/Televiser-1947-09-10.pdf">industry magazine Televiser</a>
 reported an enthusiastic response from the White House viewers: “If TV 
can do as good a job as that on perhaps the most difficult of all 
subjects to televise, then it really has arrived.”

The public’s embrace of the World Series on television, along with 
the generous coverage of the telecasts by the press, provided an 
important boost to the nascent television industry. The Sporting News 
reported that the first televised World Series increased sales for new 
receivers in New York to levels not seen since the early days of radio. 
Similar reports came from dealers in Washington and Philadelphia.

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Sarnoff">David Sarnoff</a>,
 chairman of RCA – which owed NBC and was a leading manufacturer of 
receivers – regarded television’s coverage of baseball and its crowning 
event, the World Series, as one of the most important factors in 
triggering the growth of the new medium.

Television makers, <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Center_Field_Shot.html?id=6kPQhpS-X8YC">he concluded</a>,
 “had to have baseball games and if [baseball owners] had demanded 
millions for the rights, we would have had to give it to them.”

The television industry eventually did pay millions and then billions for those rights. <a href="https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Daily/Issues/2018/11/15/Media/MLB-Fox.aspx">Fox’s latest seven-year contract</a>, including rights to the World Series, pays Major League Baseball $5.1 billion.

Happy Chandler’s 1947 demand for a $100,000 seems like quite a bargain today.

 reported an enthusiastic response from the White House viewers: “If TV 
can do as good a job as that on perhaps the most difficult of all 
subjects to televise, then it really has arrived.” The public’s embrace of the World Series on television, along with 
the generous coverage of the telecasts by the press, provided an 
important boost to the nascent television industry. The Sporting News 
reported that the first televised World Series increased sales for new 
receivers in New York to levels not seen since the early days of radio. 
Similar reports came from dealers in Washington and Philadelphia.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Sarnoff">David Sarnoff</a>,
 chairman of RCA – which owed NBC and was a leading manufacturer of 
receivers – regarded television’s coverage of baseball and its crowning 
event, the World Series, as one of the most important factors in 
triggering the growth of the new medium. Television makers, <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Center_Field_Shot.html?id=6kPQhpS-X8YC">he concluded</a>,
 “had to have baseball games and if [baseball owners] had demanded

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Mickey Joseph slipped up in his role as Nebraska’s interim head coach Tuesday when he responded to a reporter’s comment and question about a standout high school player who recently pledged to sign with the Cornhuskers.

Malachi Coleman, a four-star wide receiver from Lincoln East High, held an event Saturday to announce he had chosen Nebraska over five other schools. He is the highest-rated prospect in the state.

The first day he can sign his letter of intent is Dec. 21. NCAA rules prohibit coaches from commenting on an unsigned prospective recruit.

A reporter at the Huskers' weekly news conference interrupted as Joseph was answering another question.

“You got Malachi Coleman this weekend,” the reporter said.

“I wasn't finished answering that question,” Joseph said.

The reporter apologized, and Joseph said, “I'm just joking. You're so uptight. But, no, right, we got Malachi."

Asked if he had spoken to Coleman since the announcement, Joseph said, "Well, he said six months ago he wasn't coming, so you put the pieces together."

Joseph was named interim coach Sept. 11, the same day Scott Frost was fired after the Huskers' 1-2 start.

Joseph smirked immediately after making the comment and as he walked out of the news conference he asked athletic department media relations staffers if he had made a mistake.

Spokesman Keith Mann wrote in an email to The Associated Press that Joseph contacted the school's compliance office immediately after the news conference to make its staff aware of the comment.

According to Bylaw 13.10.1.1 in the 2022-23 NCAA manual, an institution "is precluded from commenting in any manner as to the likelihood of the prospective student-athlete committing to or signing with that institution."

"Obviously, they're a Big Ten opponent," said CSC Head Men's Basketball Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=551">Shane Paben</a>. "They were able to grab offensive rebounds and get points underneath the basket, just because of their sheer size. But we competed and gave great effort, and we were only down six just before the first media timeout of the second half. It was a great experience for the team the whole weekend." The Huskers started slowly. CSC either led or was tied for the first five and a half minutes, thanks in part to a 1-for-5 opening rally by Nebraska. CSC junior forward&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8506">Porter Anderson</a>&nbsp;got under the basket for a dunk in the game's opening score, assisted by senior wing&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8511">MJ Foust</a>, and junior transfer guard&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8513">Bryce Latimer</a>&nbsp;started 3-for-3 as part of a 9-for-15 start for the Eagles. Huskers pull away from Chadron State in exhibition game Sunday

&nbsp; The Chadron State volleyball team lost on the road against CSU-Pueblo in three sets (12-25, 23-25, 10-25) on Saturday night. The loss by the Eagles puts their record at 7-16 overall, and 5-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The first set opened with CSU-Pueblo jumping out to a 6-1 lead before CSC was able to get a second point. The ThunderWolves didn't go down by less than five after that. The Eagles got back to a five-point difference on a pair of attack errors by the Thunderwolves, but the Eagles never captured momentum. &nbsp;The Thunderwolves were able close out the set off a kill from Bailey Combs. The second set was much better for the Eagles as they got a kill from&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4331">Rylee Greiman</a>&nbsp;to go up 5-4, which concluded a 3-0 run early in the set. The Thunderwolves were able to regain the lead from another Combs kill. CSC kept it close as both teams traded blows. The Eagles were able to regain the lead at 10-9. A CSU-Pueblo 6-0 run flipped the lead back to the Thunderwolves, and the Eagles were not able to go back on top. CSC drew within two from another Greiman kill, at 19-17, but the Thunderwolves closed the set off a Payton Van Veen kill. CSC was not able to get a point in the third set until the Thunderwolves had eight of their own. CSU-Pueblo went on a 7-1 run before CSC was able to get a rally going. A 5-2 run from the Eagles got the momentum until the Thunderwolves scored five consecutive points, led by Hannah Delor. The Eagles were able to scrape together three more points before CSU-Pueblo was able to close out the match. CSC's record is now 7-15 overall, and 5-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.&nbsp; The first set opened with both teams trading blows, with neither team being able to gain an advantage. CSC's largest lead throughout the first set was one point. UCCS' largest lead was three. There were 17 total ties in the first set. The Mountain Lions were able to gain a little separation from the Eagles by going on a 4-1 run sparked by a kill from Hannah Ammerman. With UCCS up 22-19, the Eagles fought back thanks to&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8451">Bella Adams</a>, Breshawana Kelly, and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8447">Mayson Fago</a>&nbsp;to cut the lead down to one, at 23-24. A kill from UCCS' Reilly Babcock put the 25th point on the board for UCCS to take the first set.&nbsp; The second set picked up right where the first set left off with neither team capturing the momentum and multiple ties and lead changes ensuing. The offense was led by Fago with 13 kills. Hurtado and Adams both added five. Fago also led the Eagles in hitting percentage, hitting .370 on the night. Defensively, CSC totaled nine blocks, with Adams, and Fago leading the way with three, and two, respectively. CSC falls out of playoff spot after weekend sweeps

&nbsp; Quarterback Hunter Raquet connected with wide receiver Andrew Cook for four touchdown passes as homestanding Colorado State-Pueblo defeated Chadron State 34-12 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon. After Chadron State posted the game's opening touchdown, the first of the Raquet-to-Cook TD passes was a 12-yarder that came as the first quarter was ending and tied the score at 6-6. Since both teams' extra point attempts were blocked, both also missed field goal attempts and neither got much going offensively in the first half, it was still 6-6 at halftime.&nbsp; Pueblo had just 156 yards and Chadron State only 104 at intermission. The Eagles scored their touchdown with 4:38 left in the opening quarter on a seven-yard pass play from quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8322">Heath Beemiller</a>&nbsp;to wide receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4622">Grant Swenson</a>, who caught the ball at about the five and spun past two defenders into the end zone.&nbsp; The 30-yard drive began when CSC defensive tackle&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4269">Trevon Smith</a>&nbsp;forced a ThunderWolves' back to fumble and also recovered the bobble. Chadron State had another golden opportunity to score in the final minute of the first half when all-star cornerback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5697">Bobby Peele</a>&nbsp;picked off Raquet's pass and raced 35 yards with it before the Pueblo quarterback tackled him at the three-yard line.&nbsp; However, the Wolves' highly-respected goal line defense wouldn't budge and forced the Eagles to attempt a 19-yard field goal that was wide to the left. The Eagles' disappointment may have carried over into the second half. &nbsp;Raquet and Cook were definitely hot in the third period, when they hooked up on TD passes of 31, 10 and 63 yards to give their team a 27-6 lead. Raquet also ran three yards with three minutes left in the game for the game's final touchdown.&nbsp;&nbsp; Earlier in the final frame, the Eagles drove deep into Pueblo territory twice, but had to settle for field goals of 27 and 28 yards by&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8248">Gunnar Jones</a>. Although he was sacked five times. Raquet, a senior transfer from Jacksonville State via his hometown of Santa Cruz, Calif., completed 17 of 27 passes for 333 yards.&nbsp; Cook, a sophomore from Tucson, had five receptions totaling 159 yards, including the four that went for touchdowns. Senior Max Fine also caught seven of Raquet's passes for 146 yards. Chadron State got a gutsy performance from its quarterback, Beemiller, who completed 24 of 36 passes for 159 yards and the TD. A transfer from Northern Arizona, Beemiller started and played nearly all of the Eagles' first three games before suffering a knee injury that sidelined him from the next three contests.&nbsp; His initial replacement, sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4585">Mason Hamilton</a>, played most of the fourth game before departing with a dislocated shoulder that apparently has ended his season. That brought on redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8268">Preston Pearson</a>, who guided the Eagles to wins over Fort Lewis and Adams State the last two weeks, but he sustained a foot injury late the second game that makes his availability questionable for the rest of the schedule. Beemiller also left the field late in Saturday's game favoring the knee he had previously injured. During his post-game interview, Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=503">Jay Long</a>&nbsp;said he was concerned that the new injury may be serious, meaning the Eagles may have to use their fourth-string quarterback this coming Saturday when they host New Mexico Highlands.&nbsp; The Eagles also are banged up at other positions. Long said they were missing seven starters Saturday, including the three starting wide receivers during the early games.&nbsp; Swenson, a sophomore, did a great job of helping fill that breach at Pueblo, catching nine passes for 70 yards. Altogether Pueblo finished with 443 total net yards and Chadron State with 234. Neither team was productive on the ground. The ThunderWolves ran the ball 36 times for 110 yards the Eagles 35 for 75. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4621">Jalen Starks</a>&nbsp;paced CSC with 18 carries for 61 yards and Austin Bacher led Pueblo with 12 for 55. Among the game's standouts was the Eagles' sophomore defensive end&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4610">Hunter O'Connor</a>, who was credited with 3.5 quarterback sacks, broke up a pass and participated in a game-high 10 tackles.  </figure>BY: CON MARSHALL CSC Sports Information&nbsp; Quarterback Hunter Raquet connected with wide receiver Andrew Cook for four touchdown passes as homestanding Colorado State-Pueblo defeated Chadron State 34-12 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon. After Chadron State posted the game's opening touchdown, the first of the Raquet-to-Cook TD passes was a 12-yarder that came as the first quarter was ending and tied the score at 6-6. Since both teams' extra point attempts were blocked, both also missed field goal attempts and neither got much going offensively in the first half, it was still 6-6 at halftime.&nbsp; Pueblo had just 156 yards and Chadron State only 104 at intermission. The Eagles scored their touchdown with 4:38 left in the opening quarter on a seven-yard pass play from quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8322">Heath Beemiller</a>&nbsp;to wide receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4622">Grant Swenson</a>, who caught the ball at about the five and spun past two defenders into the end zone.&nbsp; The 30-yard drive began when CSC defensive tackle&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4269">Trevon Smith</a>&nbsp;forced a ThunderWolves' back to fumble and also recovered the bobble. Chadron State had another golden opportunity to score in the final minute of the first half when all-star cornerback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5697">Bobby Peele</a>&nbsp;picked off Raquet's pass and raced 35 yards with it before the Pueblo quarterback tackled him at the three-yard line.&nbsp; However, the Wolves' highly-respected goal line defense wouldn't budge and forced the Eagles to attempt a 19-yard field goal that was wide to the left. The Eagles' disappointment may have carried over into the second half. &nbsp;Raquet and Cook were definitely hot in the third period, when they hooked up on TD passes of 31, 10 and 63 yards to give their team a 27-6 lead. Raquet also ran three yards with three minutes left in the game for the game's final touchdown.&nbsp;&nbsp; Earlier in the final frame, the Eagles drove deep into Pueblo territory twice, but had to settle for field goals of 27 and 28 yards by&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8248">Gunnar Jones</a>. Although he was sacked five times. Raquet, a senior transfer from Jacksonville State via his hometown of Santa Cruz, Calif., completed 17 of 27 passes for 333 yards.&nbsp; Cook, a sophomore from Tucson, had five receptions totaling 159 yards, including the four that went for touchdowns. Senior Max Fine also caught seven of Raquet's passes for 146 yards. Chadron State got a gutsy performance from its quarterback, Beemiller, who completed 24 of 36 passes for 159 yards and the TD. A transfer from Northern Arizona, Beemiller started and played nearly all of the Eagles' first three games before suffering a knee injury that sidelined him from the next three contests.&nbsp; His initial replacement, sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4585">Mason Hamilton</a>, played most of the fourth game before departing with a dislocated shoulder that apparently has ended his season. That brought on redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8268">Preston Pearson</a>, who guided the Eagles to wins over Fort Lewis and Adams State the last two weeks, but he sustained a foot injury late the second game that makes his availability questionable for the rest of the schedule. Beemiller also left the field late in Saturday's game favoring the knee he had previously injured. During his post-game interview, Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=503">Jay Long</a>&nbsp;said he was concerned that the new injury may be serious, meaning the Eagles may have to use their fourth-string quarterback this coming Saturday when they host New Mexico Highlands.&nbsp; The Eagles also are banged up at other positions. Long said they were missing seven starters Saturday, including the three starting wide receivers during the early games.&nbsp; Swenson, a sophomore, did a great job of helping fill that breach at Pueblo, catching nine passes for 70 yards. Altogether Pueblo finished with 443 total net yards and Chadron State with 234. Neither team was productive on the ground. The ThunderWolves ran the ball 36 times for 110 yards the Eagles 35 for 75. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4621">Jalen Starks</a>&nbsp;paced CSC with 18 carries for 61 yards and Austin Bacher led Pueblo with 12 for 55. Among the game's standouts was the Eagles' sophomore defensive end&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4610">Hunter O'Connor</a>, who was credited with 3.5 quarterback sacks, broke up a pass and participated in a game-high 10 tackles. Next on the Eagles' tackle chart was senior safety&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4186">Brendan Brehmer</a>&nbsp;with eight. "We changed our defensive front this week," said Long, "from a tight formation to a wider one. Hunter has really provided a great rush in that formation. &nbsp; The Chadron State College volleyball team lost in three sets (23-25, 17-25, 21-25) against UCCS on Friday night in Colorado Springs. CSC's record is now 7-15 overall, and 5-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.&nbsp; The first set opened with both teams trading blows, with neither team being able to gain an advantage. CSC's largest lead throughout the first set was one point. UCCS' largest lead was three. There were 17 total ties in the first set. The Mountain Lions were able to gain a little separation from the Eagles by going on a 4-1 run sparked by a kill from Hannah Ammerman. With UCCS up 22-19, the Eagles fought back thanks to&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8451">Bella Adams</a>, Breshawana Kelly, and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8447">Mayson Fago</a>&nbsp;to cut the lead down to one, at 23-24. A kill from UCCS' Reilly Babcock put the 25th point on the board for UCCS to take the first set.&nbsp; The second set picked up right where the first set left off with neither team capturing the momentum and multiple ties and lead changes ensuing. After a 10-10 Fago kill, UCCS was able to go on a 6-0 run. The Eagles responded with a 4-1 run to get back into the set. The Mountain Lions were able to flip the momentum and went on a 6-2 run to put the set out of reach of the Eagles. CSC was able scrape across another point before UCCS' Nicole Medlin sent the game to the third set.&nbsp; The Eagles started off hot in the third set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead, with the help of&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4359">Lexi Hurtado</a>, and Fago. The Mountain Lions were able to crawl their way back into the set after a 4-1 run to cut the lead to one. The Eagles responded with a 3-2 run but could not put the Mountain Lions away for good. UCCS was able to tie the set at 15 all off a kill from Ammerman. The Eagles were able to regain the lead at 17-16 from an attack error from UCCS. The Eagles extended their lead to three before UCCS fought back and took the lead 21-20. UCCS did not look back as they scored four of the next five points to take the match.&nbsp; The Eagles had an exceptionally good hitting percentage tonight hitting .269 with a total of 35 kills. The offense was led by Fago with 13 kills. Hurtado and Adams both added five. Fago also led the Eagles in hitting percentage, hitting .370 on the night. Defensively, CSC totaled nine blocks, with Adams, and Fago leading the way with three, and two, respectively. Kelly added two. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4339">Abby Schaefer</a>&nbsp;led the team in digs with 18. Hurtado had 13. The team totaled 51 digs.&nbsp; The Eagles will travel to Pueblo to take on CSU-Pueblo on Saturday night, October 22, at 7 p.m.

Eagles playoff hopes take big hit with sweep in The Springs

Just over a week after claiming the D-6 District Crown, the Hemingford Girls Cross Country Team picked up a bigger piece of hardware for their trophy case.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Bobcat Girls team won the Class D State Cross Country&nbsp; Championship Friday in Kearney.&nbsp; Hemingford finished first with a team score of 38 and had three team members finish in the Top 20.&nbsp; Freshman Dakota Horstman was 6th,&nbsp; Sophomore Aurora Hinman was 14th and Junior Carlye Kresl was 18th.&nbsp; Other team members were Serenity Dillard and Madison Meek.&nbsp; &nbsp;Ainsworth was the runner up with a team score of 40, Crofton was third in the very competitve team race with 41 points.&nbsp;

The Hemingford Boys Team finished in 18th place...team members were Zane Hinman, Boady Hunter, Creel Weber, Drew Varner and Gavin Bell.

Alliance Junior Ben Cassatt-Renia finished 4oth in the Class C Boys race.
