&nbsp; Two teams shut out the Chadron State College volleyball squad on Saturday, running the Eagles' record to 1-3 after a tournament in Billings, Montana, this weekend. Minnesota State-Moorhead (2-2) swept the Eagles by scores of 25-23, 25-13, and 25-17. CSC did not hit better than 10 percent in any of its three sets, while the Dragons held their own with a .236 hitting percentage. Moorhead also won the defensive battle with nine blocks to CSC's two. Dragons' junior outside hitter Bridget Witzmann impressed with 14 kills on a hitting clip of .355. She led her team with 14.5 total points including one block assist. For the third consecutive match to start the season, CSC junior outside Lexi Furtado either led the team, or shared the team lead, in kills, knocking down five against only one error. In the afternoon, host Montana State-Billings eked out each of three sets by the minimum two points apiece. CSC took the Yellowjackets to extra serves in the first set, in a 28-26 affair, followed by two identical scores of 25-23. The Yellowjackets' junior outside Jahsita Fa'ali'I also recorded 14 kills, hitting at a respectable rate of .220. She also stood out with 14 digs and one block assist. DENVER (AP) — Third-year defensive tackle McTelvin Agim's spot on the Denver Broncos roster is all but assured. Still, he went into the final tune-up determined to stand out in case he finds himself looking for work.

Agim forced two fumbles and broke up two passes in the Broncos' 23-13 preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday night, and his best play, a strip-sack of Sean Mannion, led to Baron Browning's&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1563714587060408321?s=20&amp;t=ZS1pPiK_yYFfQsOtQ4v3sA">17-yard fumble return</a>&nbsp;for a touchdown just before halftime.

“That was my mind-set,” Agim said, “just put the best film out there so all 31 other teams see it, as well.”

They'll be impressed, but it won't matter. Agim isn't going anywhere.

Both teams rested their starters in the preseason finale, and none of the four backup quarterbacks threw a touchdown.

Browning, whom the Broncos (2-1) moved from inside linebacker to the edge this year, stunted up the middle and nearly pried the ball from Mannion's grasp himself as he swept past him in the final minute of the first half.

Agim was right there to slap the ball out as he wrapped up Mannion from behind for a 10-yard sack. Browning reached back, grabbed the ball with his right hand and zipped into the end zone to give Denver a 17-7 lead.

“That was a killer," Vikings rookie head coach Kevin O'Connell said. "Sean’s trying to get ready check the ball down. We coach real hard to have two hands on it in the pocket.”

Mannion got the Vikings, who went winless in the preseason, to midfield for Greg Joseph's 46-yard field goal as time expired, cutting Minnesota's deficit to 17-10 at halftime.

Joseph's 58-yarder five seconds into the fourth quarter made it 17-13 and the Vikings were driving again when safety rookie safety Dalarrin Turner-Yell returned from a concussion check to sack Kellen Mond on fourth-and-goal from the Denver 5.

Brandon McManus capped the scoring with a pair of field goals over the final 3:19.

With Kirk Cousins sitting out again, Mannion was 9-of-16 for 121 yards and Mond went 10 for 17 for 102 yards in the second half.

Like Cousins, Russell Wilson didn't play at all in the preseason. Brett Rypien was 14 for 21 for 137 yards in the first half and Josh Johnson threw for 107 yards on 11-of-14 passing.

Wilson dressed out in full pads and even put on his eye black to watch the action from the sideline with Denver's other resting starters were decked out in street clothes.

He also had a headset and a microphone to listen to rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett calling the offensive plays and consulting with offensive coordinator Justin Outten.

“So, he got to hear how I talked to the coaches and how I call plays,” said Hackett, whose first real-game experience with Wilson will be in the opener at Seattle.

Rypien drove the Broncos to the Minnesota 8 on Denver's opening possession but his throw over the middle to K.J. Hamler on first-and-goal was tipped by Myles Dorn and intercepted by Luiji Vilain.

Johnson drove Denver on a pair of drives that ended in field goals. McManus' 40-yarder made it 20-13 with 3:19 remaining.

That's when Denver's defense, which collected five sacks, showed up again.

Rookie Nik Bonnito recorded consecutive sacks of Mond, Agim batted down his fourth-and-27 pass with 2:07 remaining, and Denver took over at the Vikings 8. McManus added a 31-yard field goal in the waning seconds.

Minnesota's first touchdown came on Bryant Koback's carry on fourth-and-goal from the 1. Officials initially ruled he was stuffed by Turner-Yell but the Vikings won the challenge, giving them a 7-3 lead.

Montrell Washington's 11-yard TD on a reverse gave Denver the lead for good at 10-7.

The Broncos have been dreadful on special teams for several years and things didn't look much different Saturday night as returner Jalen Virgil muffed the opening kickoff, knocking the ball out of bounds at the 2.

In the third quarter, Broncos snapper Jacob Bobenmoyer inexplicably carried the ball several yards across the goal line for a touchback that left punter Sam Martin perplexed as to why he didn't just down the ball inside the 10.

Vikings: DL T.Y. McGill Jr. (ankle) and LB Troy Dye (foot) both were injured in the first quarter and didn't return. WR Jalen Nailor was ruled out with a concussion early in the third quarter. WR Bisi Johnson left shortly thereafter with what O'Connell feared was a serious knee injury.

Broncos: WR Brandon Johnson (ankle) left in the first quarter.

The Vikings open the season at home against rival Green Bay on Sept. 11.

Browning shines again as Broncos finish preseason with 23-13 win over Vikings

DUBLIN (AP) — Ryan Hilinski threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns to help Northwestern rally for a 31-28 victory over Nebraska in Saturday’s season opener in Ireland.

Northwestern handed the Cornhuskers their seventh consecutive loss going back to last season and added more pressure on embattled coach Scott Frost.

The Wildcats (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) finished with 527 yards and gained a measure of revenge after their humiliating 56-7 loss to the Huskers last October. Nebraska hasn’t won since then.

Nebraska (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) was looking for a bounce-back season with a revamped offense following a 3-9 season, but the team and its many fans who made the trip are headed home bitterly disappointed.

Quarterback Casey Thompson had a big game in his Huskers debut, throwing for 355 yards, but a fourth-quarter mistake was costly. Cameron Mitchell intercepted Thompson’s pass and returned it almost 40 yards. Six plays later, Evan Hull ran it in from the 4 to give the Wildcats a 31-28 lead. Hull finished with 22 carries for 119 yards.

Xander Mueller picked off a pass that bounced off receiver Wyatt Liewer's hands with 1:27 to play and the Wildcats sealed the win.

Anthony Grant rushed for two third-quarter scores, including a 46-yarder to put the Huskers ahead 28-17. He ran it in from 3 yards on the previous drive to get Nebraska in front after the Wildcats went into halftime with a 17-14 lead. Grant had 19 carries for 101 yards.

The Huskers had built a 14-3 lead after Thompson threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to fellow transfer Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda and then punched it in from 1 early in the second quarter. Garcia-Castaneda finished with 120 yards on four receptions.

But Hilinski capped a terrific first half by finding Donny Navarro at the back of the end zone for a 6-yard scoring strike to give the Wildcats a 17-14 lead with 25 seconds left in the half.

Earlier, Hilinski hit a wide-open Raymond Niro III on a play-action pass for a 41-yard score.

After Niro’s touchdown, Nebraska was driving again when linebacker Greyson Metz ripped the ball from Garcia-Castaneda after a 24-yard completion to the Northwestern 11- yard line.

Northwestern: The Wildcats look as if they’ve found a quarterback in Hilinski, who completed 27 of 38 passes.

Nebraska: More questions for Frost. The Huskers lost all their games by single digits last season, and now another one. Despite the two interceptions, Thompson made big plays. On their first scoring drive of the third quarter, he scrambled left on a third-and-8 and heaved a pass to Garcia-Castaneda for a 58-yard gain.

Concession stands gave out free beer at one point during the game when they lost the internet connection at the stadium. Aviva Stadium is cashless, so they opted to not turn away thirsty fans. Ronan McGowan said he waited 40 minutes in long lines and missed portions of the game: “They did the right thing.”

Nebraska hosts North Dakota on Saturday in the first of four consecutive home games, including a matchup with Oklahoma on Sept. 17.

Northwestern is off next weekend and hosts Duke on Sept. 10 in the first of three straight games at Ryan Field.

Northwestern rallies past Nebraska 31-28 in Dublin

&nbsp; The 2022 Chadron State College volleyball season was served up on Friday. The Eagles went 1-1 on their first day of a tournament in Billings, Montana, winning 3-1 over the University of Mary in the afternoon, and losing 1-3 to Saint Martin's University in the evening. Mary got its best showing in its first set against when it won 25-11. The Eagles got stronger as the match went on. They closed out the four sets winning 26-24, 25-18, and 25-17. Mary's team hitting percentage fell from .276 in the first set, to .077 in the fourth, while CSC's went from .000 to .205. Junior&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4359">Lexi Hurtado</a>&nbsp;and sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8433">Aiyana Fujiyama</a>&nbsp;each had 10 kills to pace the Eagles in the win. True freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8451">Bella Adams</a>&nbsp;led in total blocks with four. In the second match of the day, CSC saw the exact opposite result. The Eagles won their first set against Saint Martin's, 25-23, but dropped three consecutive sets after that. Accurate stats weren't immediately available for CSC's second match on Friday. "We played well, for our first matches of the year," said CSC Head Volleyball Coach Jen Stadler. "We saw some great moments, and we also saw some things that we need to clean up. The Eagles went 1-1 on their first day of a tournament in Billings, Montana, winning 3-1 over the University of Mary in the afternoon, and losing 1-3 to Saint Martin's University in the evening. Mary got its best showing in its first set against when it won 25-11. The Eagles got stronger as the match went on. They closed out the four sets winning 26-24, 25-18, and 25-17. Mary's team hitting percentage fell from .276 in the first set, to .077 in the fourth, while CSC's went from .000 to .205. Junior&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4359">Lexi Hurtado</a>&nbsp;and sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8433">Aiyana Fujiyama</a>&nbsp;each had 10 kills to pace the Eagles in the win. True freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8451">Bella Adams</a>&nbsp;led in total blocks with four. In the second match of the day, CSC saw the exact opposite result. The Eagles won their first set against Saint Martin's, 25-23, but dropped three consecutive sets after that. Accurate stats weren't immediately available for CSC's second match on Friday. "We played well, for our first matches of the year," said CSC Head Volleyball Coach Jen Stadler. "We saw some great moments, and we also saw some things that we need to clean up. Chadron State splits first two matches to open season in Billings

DUBLIN (AP) — Nebraska's defense knows Ryan Hilinski from last season but it is also preparing for a surprise or two at quarterback against Northwestern in the Irish capital on Saturday.

Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald hasn't named a starter for the season opener and this week refused to talk quarterbacks: “I’m not going to tell you anything.”

“We know they're going to have some surprises for us, some different personnel groupings, might be two quarterbacks playing, might be a surprise starter, we don't know, but we’re ready for all of them,” defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said Wednesday after practice.

The Big Ten matchup is the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-mlb-sports-9f2eae5877b8ea287cc1c059b27e2f6d">first regular-season international college football game in five years</a>.

Coaches won’t admit it, but “the craic” (Irish for friendly chatter) among the 13,000 U.S. fans who made the trip is that the game is practically must-win territory already, especially for the Huskers and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-georgia-43a65185608df3fbf42086d59c1169d1">coach Scott Frost</a>.

Both teams were 3-9 last year. Nebraska hasn’t won since its 56-7 rout of Northwestern in Lincoln last October. Six consecutive losses. The Wildcats have also dropped six straight games, but Fitzgerald has a long-term deal and full support from his alma mater.

Hilinski made five starts last season as a sophomore and threw for 978 yards but completed just 54% of his passes. In nine appearances, he threw for three touchdowns and four interceptions. He also had a costly fumble in the loss to the Huskers.

Redshirt freshman Brendan Sullivan is also a possibility, though neither he or Hilinski are run threats.

“We’ve worked very hard on a lot of the unbalanced stuff from the last couple of years from (Northwestern), a lot of the quarterback runs,” Chinander said. “We’ll see, are they going to put someone else in for the quarterback runs? Are they going to do it with wildcat? We’ve worked very hard on both.”

Evan Hull rushed for 1,009 yards last season on 5.1 yards per carry, so keeping him involved will be vital for Northwestern's chances. He boasted about the whole running backs room.

“We all have our different strengths, for sure, and I think that’s what makes our group so dangerous,” Hull said. Andrew Clair “runs with an attitude to him. He can bring the boom, too.”

Northwestern’s defense couldn't stop anybody on the ground last season. The Wildcats allowed a Big Ten-worst 213 rushing yards per game, including 427 to Nebraska.

Gabe Ervin Jr. said the Huskers running backs are raring to go: “We're here to run the ball downhill, down their throat, each and every play we get the ball.”

Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson, a transfer from Texas, was Frost's choice to take the first snap in Dublin because of his experience and ability to protect the ball. Thompson threw for 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season, completing 63.2% of his passes for 2,113 yards.

Frost said he wants to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-nebraska-d896f0c586cdfe79b332442e268881cc">“let it rip”</a>&nbsp;and he reiterated that point Thursday at Aviva Stadium, saying his message is to “go out and attack."

“I really want to see that kind of mindset (of) not playing tight, not worrying about anything, just going out and getting after it,” he said.

Now in his fifth year as Huskers coach, Frost is not calling plays for the first time. New offensive coordinator Mark Whipple will be on the sideline doing that.

“It will be a different experience for me,” Frost said.

Efficiency and speed have been the buzzwords for Nebraska's offense, which also added wide receivers Trey Palmer (LSU) and Marcus Washington (Texas) from the transfer portal.

“They’ve got playmakers all over the field," Northwestern linebacker Bryce Gallagher said.

The Huskers have played abroad once before. They beat Kansas State 38-24 in the 1992 Coca-Cola Classic in Tokyo. Huskers athletic director Trev Alberts was on the '92 team. This one is dubbed the Aer Lingus College Football Classic and, at 4,000 miles away, is much closer than Tokyo. It is Northwestern's first international game.

Saturday's game will be Fitzgerald's 200th as Northwestern's coach. His record is 109-90 but coming off a 3-9 season, he'd happily take some luck of the Irish. The former Wildcat linebacker estimated that 40 family members from the Chicago area made the trip, and he plans to meet up with some relatives living in Ireland.

The teams have been soaking in Irish culture. For most of the players, it's their first time abroad.

Hospitality was on display Thursday outside Aviva when an Irishman gave a ride to a Huskers fan who couldn't find a taxi.

Broncos coach skips popular team summer drills to preserve health

Preseason prognostications offer evidence of how difficult it is to separate the top teams in Big Ten women's volleyball.

Nebraska is the No. 1 team in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. No. 3 Wisconsin is the Big Ten coaches' pick to win a fourth straight conference championship.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-wisconsin-nebraska-volleyball-womens-volleyball-473f7fe3d64f8f5d0149d372b51223f9">Wisconsin beat Nebraska in a five-set thriller</a>&nbsp;for the 2021 NCAA championship, and no one would be surprised to see a rematch when the national semifinals and final are held in Omaha, Nebraska, in December.

“It was very heartbreaking to get to that point and not to walk away winning a championship,” Cornhuskers outside hitter Madi Kubik said. “But we have to look at this season as a fresh start and new year and a new group. We’re really excited for the opportunity for this group and these people to work hard to hopefully put ourselves back into a place where we can win a national championship in Omaha.”

No. 5 Minnesota and No. 7 Ohio State are other title contenders from the Big Ten, the deepest conference in women's volleyball with seven teams in the top 25.

Second-ranked Texas, beaten by the Huskers in a regional final last year, has won the Big 12 all but two seasons since Nebraska moved to the Big Ten in 2011.

No. 4 Louisville, No. 6 Pittsburgh and No. 9 Georgia Tech are the strongest teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and No. 8 Washington is favored to win a third straight Pac-12 title. No. 11 Kentucky and No. 15 Florida are the only Southeastern Conference teams in the top 25.

Nebraska was 26-8 last season after recovering from a midseason lull of three losses in four matches and is the preseason No. 1 for the first time since 2016.

Kubik averaged better than four kills per set in conference matches and Lexi Rodriguez was national freshman of the year and the Big Ten's top defensive player. Kaitlyn Hord transferred from Penn State after being named to the All-Big Ten first team three straight years.

“Everybody says we return everybody,” Huskers coach John Cook said. “Let’s see, we’re replacing two middles, we’re replacing the setter. One-third of our team is brand new.”

The Huskers play their first eight matches in the state, including a showdown with No. 18 Creighton in Omaha on Sept. 7 and No. 14 Stanford in Lincoln on Sept. 13.

The regular season opens this weekend. Some other top teams to watch:

Logan Eggleston leads a formidable core with Asjia O’Neal, Zoe Fleck and Madisen Skinner. Eggleston is the two-time reigning Big 12 player of the year and the 2022 preseason player of the year, O’Neal was an all-conference first-team pick and Fleck was two-time Pac-12 libero of the year for UCLA. Skinner transferred from Kentucky, where she led the team in kills.

The Cardinals went 28-0 in the regular season and won the ACC title on the way to their first final four. Anna DeBeer, who led the Cardinals in kills, is among four returning starters. Southern California transfer Raquel Lazaro takes over at setter.

The Gophers must replace four-time first-team All-American Stephanie Samedy but bring back standouts in Jenna Wenaas and libero CC McGraw. The Gophers signed another top-10 recruiting class, including No. 1 overall player Mckenna Wucherer of Brookfield, Wisconsin, and they picked up four transfers.

Julia Orzol, Devyn Robinson, Anna Smrek and Danielle Hart have starting experience and will be joined by six newcomers, including four highly ranked transfers. The biggest questions are finding a successor to five-year starting setter Sydney Hilley and replacing the production of 2021 national player of the year Dana Rettke.

The Huskies bring back standouts in fifth-year players Marin Grote, Claire Hoffman and Ella May Powell. Grote led the Pac-12 with a .415 attack percentage and hit over .400 in 17 matches. Hoffman fills the stat sheet and was the first UW outside hitter to hit over .300 and lead the team in kills since 2016. Powell is two-time Pac-12 setter of the year.

is a numbers game. A day after a sparkling major league debut that brightened
the sports world, Fisher was cut by the New York Mets on Monday. 

The NL East
leaders made the move heading into the two-game Subway Series against the New
York Yankees. Fisher was in the Mets’ clubhouse at Yankee Stadium when he was
designated for assignment. 

Now completely off the 40-man roster, Fisher could
be traded or placed on waivers during a seven-day period. If unclaimed, he
could be assigned outright back to the minors with the Mets. 

On Sunday, the
26-year-old lefty who was working at a Nebraska bank last summer threw three
scoreless innings of one-hit relief as the Mets beat Philadelphia.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will play a Week Zero game for the second straight season, and coach Scott Frost can't afford a repeat of what happened a year ago.

The Cornhuskers' loss at Illinois set the tone for a 3-9 season that ended with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-nebraska-cornhuskers-football-scott-frost-nebraska-8d06dccabe24996f9e28d43fc0cf1e6b">Frost clinging to his job</a>&nbsp;after taking a $1 million pay cut and firing four offensive assistants.

Frost's fifth season begins Saturday against Northwestern in Ireland, and another Week Zero flop would be an ominous sign. Frost said his team must play looser than it did in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-college-football-nebraska-illinois-nebraska-cornhuskers-football-aa9c5b9892987e3d7bce376748828baa">30-22 loss to Illinois.</a>

“We’re going to go out there and let it rip,” he said Sunday. "I’m going to have more conversations with them about it. They have earned the right to be confident, and I’m sure Northwestern is, too. I think they’re going to be a really good team this year, and I don’t want the guys to worry about anything.”

Nebraska beat Northwestern 56-7 in Lincoln last year and is nearly a two-touchdown favorite for the game at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/">FanDuel Sportsbook.</a>

Northwestern, also looking to bounce back from a 3-9 season, is the home team. With temperatures forecast in the 60s, it should be ideal football weather.

“I’m looking forward to the experience," Wildcats defensive back Cameron Mitchell said. "I’ve heard a lot of things about the food and the weather. It’s going to be interesting. But it’s a business trip. We’re going to get some revenge on Nebraska.”

The Huskers are scheduled to fly to Dublin on Monday night and practice at the stadium Tuesday. Shaking jetlag and getting acclimated to the six-hour time difference is the priority.

The staff has spoken with people from NFL teams that have played in London and consulted with researchers in the Nebraska Athletic Performance Lab to prepare for the trip.
