Broncos coach skips popular team summer drills to preserve health

Preseason prognostications offer evidence of how difficult it is to separate the top teams in Big Ten women's volleyball.

Nebraska is the No. 1 team in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. No. 3 Wisconsin is the Big Ten coaches' pick to win a fourth straight conference championship.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-wisconsin-nebraska-volleyball-womens-volleyball-473f7fe3d64f8f5d0149d372b51223f9">Wisconsin beat Nebraska in a five-set thriller</a>&nbsp;for the 2021 NCAA championship, and no one would be surprised to see a rematch when the national semifinals and final are held in Omaha, Nebraska, in December.

“It was very heartbreaking to get to that point and not to walk away winning a championship,” Cornhuskers outside hitter Madi Kubik said. “But we have to look at this season as a fresh start and new year and a new group. We’re really excited for the opportunity for this group and these people to work hard to hopefully put ourselves back into a place where we can win a national championship in Omaha.”

No. 5 Minnesota and No. 7 Ohio State are other title contenders from the Big Ten, the deepest conference in women's volleyball with seven teams in the top 25.

Second-ranked Texas, beaten by the Huskers in a regional final last year, has won the Big 12 all but two seasons since Nebraska moved to the Big Ten in 2011.

No. 4 Louisville, No. 6 Pittsburgh and No. 9 Georgia Tech are the strongest teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and No. 8 Washington is favored to win a third straight Pac-12 title. No. 11 Kentucky and No. 15 Florida are the only Southeastern Conference teams in the top 25.

Nebraska was 26-8 last season after recovering from a midseason lull of three losses in four matches and is the preseason No. 1 for the first time since 2016.

Kubik averaged better than four kills per set in conference matches and Lexi Rodriguez was national freshman of the year and the Big Ten's top defensive player. Kaitlyn Hord transferred from Penn State after being named to the All-Big Ten first team three straight years.

“Everybody says we return everybody,” Huskers coach John Cook said. “Let’s see, we’re replacing two middles, we’re replacing the setter. One-third of our team is brand new.”

The Huskers play their first eight matches in the state, including a showdown with No. 18 Creighton in Omaha on Sept. 7 and No. 14 Stanford in Lincoln on Sept. 13.

The regular season opens this weekend. Some other top teams to watch:

Logan Eggleston leads a formidable core with Asjia O’Neal, Zoe Fleck and Madisen Skinner. Eggleston is the two-time reigning Big 12 player of the year and the 2022 preseason player of the year, O’Neal was an all-conference first-team pick and Fleck was two-time Pac-12 libero of the year for UCLA. Skinner transferred from Kentucky, where she led the team in kills.

The Cardinals went 28-0 in the regular season and won the ACC title on the way to their first final four. Anna DeBeer, who led the Cardinals in kills, is among four returning starters. Southern California transfer Raquel Lazaro takes over at setter.

The Gophers must replace four-time first-team All-American Stephanie Samedy but bring back standouts in Jenna Wenaas and libero CC McGraw. The Gophers signed another top-10 recruiting class, including No. 1 overall player Mckenna Wucherer of Brookfield, Wisconsin, and they picked up four transfers.

Julia Orzol, Devyn Robinson, Anna Smrek and Danielle Hart have starting experience and will be joined by six newcomers, including four highly ranked transfers. The biggest questions are finding a successor to five-year starting setter Sydney Hilley and replacing the production of 2021 national player of the year Dana Rettke.

The Huskies bring back standouts in fifth-year players Marin Grote, Claire Hoffman and Ella May Powell. Grote led the Pac-12 with a .415 attack percentage and hit over .400 in 17 matches. Hoffman fills the stat sheet and was the first UW outside hitter to hit over .300 and lead the team in kills since 2016. Powell is two-time Pac-12 setter of the year.

is a numbers game. A day after a sparkling major league debut that brightened
the sports world, Fisher was cut by the New York Mets on Monday. 

The NL East
leaders made the move heading into the two-game Subway Series against the New
York Yankees. Fisher was in the Mets’ clubhouse at Yankee Stadium when he was
designated for assignment. 

Now completely off the 40-man roster, Fisher could
be traded or placed on waivers during a seven-day period. If unclaimed, he
could be assigned outright back to the minors with the Mets. 

On Sunday, the
26-year-old lefty who was working at a Nebraska bank last summer threw three
scoreless innings of one-hit relief as the Mets beat Philadelphia.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will play a Week Zero game for the second straight season, and coach Scott Frost can't afford a repeat of what happened a year ago.

The Cornhuskers' loss at Illinois set the tone for a 3-9 season that ended with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-nebraska-cornhuskers-football-scott-frost-nebraska-8d06dccabe24996f9e28d43fc0cf1e6b">Frost clinging to his job</a>&nbsp;after taking a $1 million pay cut and firing four offensive assistants.

Frost's fifth season begins Saturday against Northwestern in Ireland, and another Week Zero flop would be an ominous sign. Frost said his team must play looser than it did in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-college-football-nebraska-illinois-nebraska-cornhuskers-football-aa9c5b9892987e3d7bce376748828baa">30-22 loss to Illinois.</a>

“We’re going to go out there and let it rip,” he said Sunday. "I’m going to have more conversations with them about it. They have earned the right to be confident, and I’m sure Northwestern is, too. I think they’re going to be a really good team this year, and I don’t want the guys to worry about anything.”

Nebraska beat Northwestern 56-7 in Lincoln last year and is nearly a two-touchdown favorite for the game at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/">FanDuel Sportsbook.</a>

Northwestern, also looking to bounce back from a 3-9 season, is the home team. With temperatures forecast in the 60s, it should be ideal football weather.

“I’m looking forward to the experience," Wildcats defensive back Cameron Mitchell said. "I’ve heard a lot of things about the food and the weather. It’s going to be interesting. But it’s a business trip. We’re going to get some revenge on Nebraska.”

The Huskers are scheduled to fly to Dublin on Monday night and practice at the stadium Tuesday. Shaking jetlag and getting acclimated to the six-hour time difference is the priority.

The staff has spoken with people from NFL teams that have played in London and consulted with researchers in the Nebraska Athletic Performance Lab to prepare for the trip.

“If you’ve traveled to Europe, I don’t think there is a perfect way to do it,” Frost said. “You’re not going to feel perfect when you get over there.”

Frost said it's a delicate balance getting ready to play a game while allowing the players to enjoy the experience of visiting the Emerald Isle.

“I think it would be a mistake to go over there and have the guys’ mind on football 24/7,” Frost said. “That is when you do get tight. We’re going to try and enjoy the people and the country and when it’s time to focus I want the guys to be sharp and focused.”

All nine of Nebraska's losses last year were by single digits, with turnovers at the worst possible times and shoddy special teams play the difference in most.

“Last year was really hard for a lot of people," linebacker Nick Henrich said, "but we took that and learned a lot of lessons from that, and we are going to take those over to Ireland with us.”

Nine former Chadron State College athletes have been selected for induction into the Eagles’ Athletic Hall of Fame this fall.&nbsp; The inductions will be on Saturday, October 15 following the football game against Adams State.&nbsp;

The honorees include five seniors from the 2004 football team, track and field All-Americans Joel Duffield and Jacqueline Wells Hobbs, basketball standout Bec Kyba Ray and breakaway roper Jennifer Nelson Gale.&nbsp; Six of them are Nebraska natives and five of them are living in the state. Two others reside in Wyoming and another in her native state of South Dakota.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The football players to be inducted include Chadron native Mitch Barry, who made 105 unassisted tackles, had 11 pass interceptions and broke up 28 more passes as a four-year starter at cornerback.&nbsp; He also averaged 38 yards as the Eagles’ punter three years, returned 89 punts for 998 yards while having that responsibility all four years and still holds the CSC school record for the longest touchdown run with an opponents’ fumble, 86 yards.&nbsp; Like the others, he earned numerous all-star honors.

Nelson and Pickle had dominated the region during the season and they had caught the first three calves at nationals in 2.3, 2.4 and 2.8 seconds. She was given the Hardluck Cowgirl Award at nationals, but it was not what she was expected to receive before tragedy occurred.&nbsp;

LANCASTER, Texas (AP) — The brother of retired NFL cornerback Aqib Talib has been identified by police as a suspect in the shooting death of a coach at a youth football game in Texas.

Yaqub Salik Talib is suspected in the Saturday night shooting that killed a man, police in the Dallas-area city of Lancaster said. Authorities have not yet identified the man, but family and friends say he was a coach.

Yaqub Talib was not in custody as of late Sunday and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The Associated Press sent a message seeking updated information Monday on the search for him.

“I don’t know how to explain it to the kids. That’s the part that I’m stuck on right now. How do I explain it to them. Why?" Freeman said. “This is something that these kids will remember for the rest of their life.”

Brother of former Broncos star named suspect in death of youth coach

&nbsp; The 2022 season of Chadron State College football arrives with big question marks to address on both sides of the line of scrimmage. In 2021 the Eagles enjoyed the veteran leadership of sixth-year quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4216">Dalton Holst</a>, whose 11,531 career passing yards now sit atop the CSC record book. For the first time in several years, they'll have to replace him with someone who hasn't started a game under center at CSC. There are three prime candidates for the job. The most veteran of the three is&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8322">Heath Beemiller</a>, a graduate transfer from Northern Arizona University. The junior, from Chandler, Arizona, has two years of eligibility remaining after redshirting as a safety in 2018, playing in seven games in 2019 as a quarterback, then playing one in spring of 2021 before transferring to CSC at the midpoint of 2021-22. Also in the running is&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8268">Preston Pearson</a>, a redshirt freshman from Kearney High. He was a 2020 First Team Super State selection and also First Team All-Class A, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. Pearson showed enough in spring drills to be elevated into the mix, after redshirting in 2021. Returning from the backup role last season is sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4585">Mason Hamilton</a>&nbsp;from Gilette, Wyoming. The former two-time Wyoming Super 25 selection shadowed Holst in 2021 and saw relief action in six contests, completing touchdown passes in both of the Eagles' final two games. "All three guys we're looking at for quarterback are athletic," said CSC offensive coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=517">Micah Smith</a>. "They all run well and throw the ball efficiently. On top of that, they're all smart football players who understand the game. It's going to be tough to decide who gets the first snaps when we kick off next month."

CSC returns four running backs who have previously carried the ball in games. Leading 2021 rusher&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4574">Jeydon Cox</a>, of Jackson, Wyoming, returns to lead the pack. In his 15 games as an Eagle, he averages 6.2 yards a carry, which is good for third best in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference over the past two years. His 648 rushing yards in 2021 included nine touchdown plunges, and he added 161 yards receiving. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8219">Dorian Collier</a>&nbsp;is a change of pace from Cox. The Tallahassee, Florida native is bigger, at 6-1, 213 pounds, and provides a punch out of the backfield. He recorded 422 yards last fall on the ground and two scores. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8271">Brock Ping</a>, of Billings, Montana, also filled in for the backs last year, rushing 32 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Returning from a year off is&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4621">Jalen Starks</a>, of Chicago, Illinois, who led the team in its four games of 2020, with 330 yards and seven scoring runs. Mitchell's&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8206">Rylan Aguallo</a>, a redshirt freshman, also joins the running back stable this fall, after a good spring. The receivers are a talented group, but they must replace the production of Second Team All-RMAC pick&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4233">Chad Mikelson</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4256">Cole Thurness</a>, a two-time all-conference receiver. Competition surely begins with the two most experienced wideouts,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4235">Ali Musa</a>&nbsp;of San Diego and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4583">Montel Gladney</a>&nbsp;of Jackson, Mississippi. Both are seniors. Musa is the leading returner from last season, when he caught 17 balls for 279 yards. Gladney has 356 career receiving yards and three scoring catches at CSC, after transferring in for the fall of 2020. In 2021 the Eagles enjoyed the veteran leadership of sixth-year quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4216">Dalton Holst</a>, whose 11,531 career passing yards now sit atop the CSC record book. For the first time in several years, they'll have to replace him with someone who hasn't started a game under center at CSC. There are three prime candidates for the job. The most veteran of the three is&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8322">Heath Beemiller</a>, a graduate transfer from Northern Arizona University. The junior, from Chandler, Arizona, has two years of eligibility remaining after redshirting as a safety in 2018, playing in seven games in 2019 as a quarterback, then playing one in spring of 2021 before transferring to CSC at the midpoint of 2021-22. Also in the running is&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8268">Preston Pearson</a>, a redshirt freshman from Kearney High. He was a 2020 First Team Super State selection and also First Team All-Class A, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. Pearson showed enough in spring drills to be elevated into the mix, after redshirting in 2021. Returning from the backup role last season is sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4585">Mason Hamilton</a>&nbsp;from Gilette, Wyoming. The former two-time Wyoming Super 25 selection shadowed Holst in 2021 and saw relief action in six contests, completing touchdown passes in both of the Eagles' final two games. "All three guys we're looking at for quarterback are athletic," said CSC offensive coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=517">Micah Smith</a>. "They all run well and throw the ball efficiently. On top of that, they're all smart football players who understand the game. It's going to be tough to decide who gets the first snaps when we kick off next month."<figure>

Mix of key returners and newcomers vying for spots in CSC two-deep

DENVER (AP) — The new Denver Broncos quarterback who wowed the crowd at Empower Field wasn't Russell Wilson but&nbsp;jourrneyman Josh Johnson.

Johnson, who's 36 years old and playing for his 14th NFL team, threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes and the Broncos beat the penalty-prone Dallas Cowboys 17-7 on a starless and rainy Saturday night.

“I'm just enjoying the ride, honestly,” Johnson said. “... I like to say for us backups, the preseason is the season."

Johnson was signed in the offseason to compete with Brett Rypien for the job backing up Wilson, who sat this one out along with Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.

Rypien was 8 of 18 for 113 yards, including a 42-yard strike to Jalen Virgil from his own 1. Both Johnson and Rypien drew praise from new Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett, who won his NFL head coaching debut, albeit in a preseason game that won’t really count.

Cooper Rush got the start for Dallas and was 12 of 20 for 84 yards and an interception. Ben DiNucci (9 of 16 for 112 yards) finally got the Cowboys on the board with a 12-yard TD toss to Simi Fehoko with just under five minutes remaining, capping a 16-play, 95-yard drive.

The Cowboys committed a whopping 17 penalties for 129 yards 48 hours after Denver's front-line defense got the better of Dallas' first-string offense in a chippy joint practice that featured a half-dozen skirmishes.

“The penalties clearly were way too much,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said. “We'll look at those ... as far as the ones that were combative versus discipline. That's clearly the biggest negative, but I'm actually excited to watch the tape. I want to see these young linemen, our run blocking unit. I think they stepped up and did some good things.”

Minus Ezekiel Elliott and most of the other starters, the Cowboys ran for 141 yards on 28 carries, a 5-yard average.

After yielding 17 second-quarter points, the Cowboys turned away Denver with a goal line stand on the Broncos' first drive after halftime when cornerback Kyron Brown broke up Rypien's pass to Darrius Shepherd on fourth-and-goal from the 3.

Only a handful of regulars started for each team, including Broncos inside linebacker Jonas Griffith, who injured his left elbow on the game's second snap and didn't return. Hackett had no update after the game.

He hit Seth Williams from a yard out and added a 24-yarder to Kendall Hinton. Williams' grab followed a 40-yard reception by rookie Brandon Johnson, son of former Colorado Rockies catcher Charles Johnson.

Brandon McManus sent the Broncos into halftime with a 17-0 lead by nailing a 52-yarder at the end of the first half.

The game also marked the introduction of the Broncos' new&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-nfl-sports-pat-bowlen-rob-walton-8852a003be606e308be12ec9884f9350">Walton-Penner ownership group</a>, which purchased the team from the Pat Bowlen Trust for a record $4.65 billion, and new team president&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-nfl-sports-football-6fc72aaefdc0412b935819661c62e912">Damani Leech</a>.

Even though Wilson didn't play, the crowd was relatively large for a preseason game — 64,541.

Cowboys: TE Ian Bunting (neck) sat out. He was injured in practice Thursday.

Broncos: CB Michael Ojemudia was evaluated for a concussion late in the first quarter.

McManus was wide right on a 57-yard attempt as the first half expired, but Dallas cornerback Kelvin Johnson was offside, setting up an untimed play, and McManus nailed it from 52 yards out.

Dallas K Lirim Hajrullahu was wide right on a 56-yard try early in the fourth quarter.

The Broncos didn't play running backs Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon, and their backups were held to just 39 yards and a 1.8-yard average.

“Yes, it's always great to win, but in the end we've got a lot of work to do," Hackett said. "That run game was not good enough. ... We're not going to be able to consistently win without getting that run game going.”

Baron Browning moved from inside linebacker to outside linebacker this offseason and had a solid camp. On Saturday night, he had a sack, a pass breakup, three tackles and a quarterback hit.

“He was around the quarterback quite a bit,” gloated Hackett.

Chadron State College Athletic Director&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/staff.aspx?staff=84">Joel R. Smith</a>&nbsp;announced on Wednesday that&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/staff.aspx?staff=292">Seth Mischke</a>&nbsp;will take over the reins of the Eagles track and field program as head coach. "We're fortunate to have an experienced head coach in Seth," said Smith, "as we prepare to host the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships and compete for the conference title." Mischke spent the past 11 seasons as the head track and field coach, and assistant cross country coach, at Black Hills State University. There, his program two individual national champions, 18 All-America earners, 18 conference champions, and more than 100 All-RMAC honorees. In 2012, Mischke also helped BHSU make the leap from the NAIA into one of the strongest NCAA Division II conferences for track and field, and cross country. Before BHSU, he held both the head track and field and cross country posts for 12 years at St. Cloud State. Mischke was twice named the conference coach of the year with the Huskies, after his men's teams finished fourth at the indoor North Central Conference championships in 2005 and runner-up at the Northern Sun Conference meet in 2011. At St. Cloud, his program produced one national champ, 17 All-America winners, and 21 conference champions. Mischke is a 1997 graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he was a Big Ten Conference runner-up in the indoor pole vault and finished third in the outdoor decathlon. He and his wife Colleen, have three children: Brooklyn, Tanner and Micah. Colleen was an administrator with the BHSU athletic department for 11 years and a stand-out heptathlete and high jumper at the University of Nebraska. CSC names new Track & Field Head Coach

Vin Scully, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/02/sports/baseball/vin-scully-dead.html">who died on Aug. 2, 2022</a>,
 is widely viewed as the greatest baseball announcer of all time. But 
for an earlier generation, his mentor, Red Barber, held that 
distinction.

In our recent biography “<a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Red_Barber/lWhgEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0">Red Barber: The Life and Legacy of a Broadcasting Legend</a>,”
 we uncovered moving private letters and public references documenting 
the rich personal bonds between these two great voices of the game.

In 1939, Barber brought daily radio broadcasts of Dodgers baseball to
 Brooklyn’s fans for the first time. By the time Scully arrived in 1950,
 Barber – known as “<a href="https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19921022&amp;slug=1520043">the Old Redhead</a>” – was the toast of Flatbush.

For a combined century – 33 years for Barber and 67 for Scully – the 
two blessed baseball fans with some of the sharpest word pictures ever 
painted of the grand old game. Together in the Brooklyn booth for four 
crucial years, from 1950 to 1953, they forged a relationship that proved
 to be both demanding and gratifying.

After Scully graduated with a degree in English from Fordham 
University in 1949, he papered East Coast radio stations with 
applications. <a href="https://vault.si.com/vault/1964/05/04/the-transistor-kid">He eventually scored an interview with CBS Radio</a>, where Barber was director of sports. Barber came away impressed, but there were no openings at the time.

Barber later phoned Vin Scully when, at the last minute, he needed a 
reporter to cover a college football contest at Fenway Park in Boston 
for CBS College Football Roundup. Scully’s mother answered the phone and
 took the message for Vin that <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Voices_of_the_Game/oNBwQgAACAAJ?hl=en">“Red Skelton” wanted to talk to him about a job</a> – confusing Barber with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Skelton">the popular entertainer</a>.

Fortunately, Scully figured out who was calling. He hustled to the 
park, only to learn there was no room for him in the press box. With 
only a light topcoat to defend himself against the cruel New England 
elements, he had to call the entire game from the roof, braving the 
winds on a chilly fall day with only a 60-watt light bulb to warm his 
hands. Barber, initially unaware of Scully’s plight, later wrote that 
when he learned his announcer had called the game from the roof, he was 
impressed by the young broadcaster’s stamina and even more impressed 
that Scully had never complained about the brutal conditions.

When <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ2EG3t3fEI">Ernie Harwell</a>,
 who would become the legendary voice of the Detroit Tigers, left the 
Brooklyn Dodgers’ broadcast booth for the New York Giants, Red Barber 
needed to find a replacement. He decided to go with the young 
broadcaster <a href="https://ufdc.ufl.edu/AA00067187/00001/downloads">who had so impressed him</a> – later describing Scully as “a pretty appealing young green pea … a boy who had something on the ball.”

So Vin Scully, just 22 years old, <a href="https://dodgers.mlblogs.com/on-this-date-70-years-ago-today-vin-scully-joins-the-booth-a66648e399e8">was given the chance of a lifetime</a>, to broadcast the games of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the National League’s most successful team.

But this golden opportunity was challenging in ways Scully did not foresee.

Red Barber, who early in life planned to be a college professor, was a
 tough grader. He demanded a lot of himself, and he held those who 
worked with him to just as high a standard. 

When Vin first entered the Dodgers broadcast booth, Barber told the 
young man that his job was to do whatever Red and his colleague Connie 
Desmond didn’t want to do. He also made it clear that any Scully errors 
would be corrected on air for all to hear. When Barber saw Scully 
drinking a beer with his pregame sandwich – a common practice at the 
time – <a href="https://ufdc.ufl.edu/AA00067191/00001/downloads">he told Vin he never wanted to see him do it again</a>.

Barber was no teetotaler – far from it; leisure hours drinks were 
something he treasured. But he believed a broadcaster should never have a
 drink, even a beer, on the job. Barber reasoned if Scully made an 
error, something inevitable for a broadcaster ad-libbing for hours at a 
time, anyone who saw him sipping the press room brew would conclude that
 alcohol had clouded his performance.

One of Red’s broadcasting mantras was <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Broadcasters/bpFZAAAAMAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0">pregame preparation</a>.
 So before one game, when Scully told his mentor that a Dodgers’ regular
 would be out of the lineup, Barber demanded to know why. Scully told 
him he had no idea. To Barber, that was unacceptable.

Scully quickly realized that he needed to know the “whys”; he had to 
get to the stadium early and spend time talking with managers and 
players, absorbing compelling facts and stories to keep listeners 
engaged during slow stretches of each contest.

The delicate bonds that develop between any mentor and mentee, though
 often fruitful, almost always involve some degree of resentment and 
frustration, likely because each member of the pair has so much vested 
in winning the respect and affection of the other. Some of Barber’s 
barbs must have stung. But throughout his career Scully always credited 
Red for instilling in him the discipline and values of a professional 
baseball announcer. <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Red_Barber/lWhgEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0">He claimed</a>
 that the greatest virtue of Red as a mentor “was the fact that he 
cared. I wasn’t just another kid in the booth, just another announcer. …
 He made sure that my work habits were good, and he rode me if I drifted
 away from his ideal of the right way to work.”

In 1953, Barber left the Brooklyn booth after a dispute over his pay. 

Ahead of that season’s World Series between the Dodgers and the New 
York Yankees, the Series’ sponsor, Gillette, offered Barber only $200 
per game, take it or leave it. Barber left it, and when he did not get 
the support he wanted from Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley, he decided to 
sit out the Series and sign with the Yankees for the following season.

Gillette then turned to Scully, asking him if he’d announce the 
Series. Scully called Red seeking his permission. Barber was genuinely 
moved by Scully’s request, given that his permission clearly was not 
needed.  

All of a sudden, Scully, at the age of 25, was thrust onto the 
national stage. He remains the youngest person to ever call a World 
Series. Two years later, he announced the Brooklyn Dodgers’ only World 
Series win, and in 1958 he moved with the club to Los Angeles, where he 
would call games for the next 59 seasons.

Barber and Scully maintained an affectionate dialogue for the remainder of Red’s life.

When Barber and Mel Allen were honored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame as the first recipients of the <a href="https://baseballhall.org/discover-more/awards/887">Ford C. Frick Award</a>, presented yearly to a broadcaster for “major contributions to baseball,” <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Red_Barber/lWhgEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0">Scully wrote his old teacher</a>,
 “I know as well as anyone alive what a true artist you were behind the 
mike. There is a great deal of you in anything I do well in 
play-by-play, and it will live in me as long as I am working.”

when he first learned of Red’s death. After absorbing the sad news, he 
began hearing his old mentor chiding him: “Now don’t you talk about me 
during the game. These people aren’t tuning in to hear about me. Talk 
about the game.”

 that the greatest virtue of Red as a mentor “was the fact that he 
cared. I wasn’t just another kid in the booth, just another announcer. …
 He made sure that my work habits were good, and he rode me if I drifted
 away from his ideal of the right way to work.”<h2>Scully in the spotlight</h2>In 1953, Barber left the Brooklyn booth after a dispute over his pay. Ahead of that season’s World Series between the Dodgers and the New 
York Yankees, the Series’ sponsor, Gillette, offered Barber only $200 
per game, take it or leave it. Barber left it, and when he did not get 
the support he wanted from Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley, he decided to 
sit out the Series and sign with the Yankees for the following season.Gillette then turned to Scully, asking him if he’d announce the 
Series. Scully called Red seeking his permission. Barber was genuinely 
moved by Scully’s request, given that his permission clearly was not 
needed. All of a sudden, Scully, at the age of 25, was thrust onto the 
national stage. He remains the youngest person to ever call a World 
Series. Two years later, he announced the Brooklyn Dodgers’ only World 
Series win, and in 1958 he moved with the club to Los Angeles, where he 
would call games for the next 59 seasons.<figure>

Five new members will be inducted this fall, into the Alliance High School Activities Hall of Fame.&nbsp; 

The selection committee meets once a year to review and vote on new members.&nbsp; In order for a nominee to be inducted, they must receive at least a 75% majority vote from the selection committee.&nbsp; This year the committee reviewed 40 nominees, which included 22 State Champions or 1st Team All-State selections,&nbsp; 21 different individuals received at least one vote from committee members.&nbsp; After several rounds of discussion and voting, the committee selected the following for induction into this years class.&nbsp;

Jeff Colwell....AHS Class of 1988.&nbsp; Jeff was a two-time State Wrestling Champion. Winning the heavyweight title in 1987 and 1988.&nbsp; He was also part of 2 State Champion Wrestling Teams

Dan Farrington...AHS Class of 1955.&nbsp; Dan was a member of the 1955 State Champion Track &amp; Field Team. He won Gold Medals in the 100 and 880 relay and still holds the AHS 200m record.

Ryan Lovell...AHS Class of 1992.&nbsp; Ryan was an Outstanding Performer in Speech &amp; Drama and participated in Class Plays and Contests. He was named Outstanding Actor his Senior year.&nbsp; He is the second performer to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.&nbsp;

Kory Phiil....AHS Class of 1987.&nbsp; Kory was a 4-time State Wrestling Medalist and a 2-time State Champion Wrestler in 1986 and 1987.&nbsp; He was also part of 3 AHS State Champion Wrestling teams.

Dave Sautter....AHS Coach and Teacher for 30+ years.&nbsp; During his time at AHS, Dave taught Math and Coached,&nbsp; Football, Volleyball, Golf and Girls Basketball.&nbsp; Dave is the All-time winnigest Coach in AHS Girls Basketball history.&nbsp; &nbsp;He lead Alliance to the 2007 Girls Class B State Basketball Championship.&nbsp;

The 2022 Hall of Fame members will be inducted during Homecoming Week at AHS.&nbsp; They will be honored during the Homecoming Parade and will be recognized at the Homecoming Football game vs McCook on Friday Oct. 7.&nbsp; The induction ceremony will be held on Saturday Oct. 8. All are welcome to attend.&nbsp;

AHS Activities Hall of Fame to induct 5 new members in 2022

Fall practice begins at 2:00 Monday afternoon for Chadron State football.&nbsp; The Eagle offensive line is returning some key veterans but is also looking to fill some big departures.

Fortunately junior center Michael DeCamillis will be back to anchor things in the middle of the line of scrimmage. He's hoping to get the younger players to develop the tough mentality that has been part of the success for several recent stars up front.

Along the lines of building team chemistry during the offseason Decamillis explains the process of bringing everyone together.

Traditionally the Eagles will move a veteran lineman into the left tackle spot when the position needs to be filled.&nbsp; That should be the case again this fall with Juan Estrada-Sanchez sliding over from the right side.&nbsp; The Eagles will then have to fill his former area, and also both guard positions with Austin Rapp and Jake Norris moving on.

With the biggest question to answer for CSC football in the pre-season being who will man the quarterback position, one of the Eagles top returning defensive players is already noticing some changes on the other side of the ball.

During Tuesday's RMAC Media Day Conference senior defensive back Bobby Peele says the trio vying for the starting job is giving defenses something different to prepare for, and they're showing leadership traits.

The quarterback battle began during spring ball with the graduation of Dalton Holst, and the Eagle defense will get its first official looks at the new trio in pads again once fall camp kicks off on Monday.

Meanwhile, Peele and the defense are returning a lot of talent and a strong mix of veterans that could make it among the RMAC's best overall units this fall.&nbsp; After last season's final game at Black Hills State it looked like the senior had played his final snap but Peele took some time and decided to come back for a final year of eligibility, giving a huge injection of energy and excitement into the defense looking forward.&nbsp; Peele can't wait for fall camp to open up and get in more work.

Maybe the biggest question for the CSC defense this fall is, which opposing RMAC quarterback will have the guts to throw it Peele's way...?&nbsp; He finished with six interceptions in 2021 and was on pace early to break the CSC single-season record of 10 set by Randy Bauer in 1973.&nbsp; He'll surely be matched up against the opponent's top receivers again this fall, which could make for some big opportunities to take the ball away.

Peele has created his success on the field through a pretty simple, yet very effective way to prepare.

🔊 CSC Football opens season with RMAC Media Day Appearance Tuesday

Tuesday was CSC’s time to take the
microphone for RMAC Football Media Day.&nbsp; Head
Coach Jay Long, senior Defensive Back Bobby Peele and junior Center Michael DeCamillis shared
insights on the offseason and expectations of what they see coming on the field
this fall.

Coach Long joked about the one question
everyone seems to be asking him right now – how will you fill the departure of
record setting quarterback Dalton Holst?

Whomever takes the snaps this season the
coaches will be counting on the QB to lead a team capable of winning close
games inside the rugged RMAC landscape.

The Eagles finished the 2021 fall
campaign at 6-5 with two of the early season losses coming by a touchdown or
less, and the pressure will be on early with an intriguing first month of games that opens
at Lone Star Conference favorite Angelo State.

That challenge will be followed by a Week 2 trip to Utah Tech
(formerly Dixie State) now in Division I FCS.&nbsp; RMAC play begins with a rivalry
showdown against Black Hills State in Chadron in Week 3 and September
closes out with defending RMAC co-champion Western Colorado in Gunnison, the
third of four road games to start the year.

less, and the pressure will be on early with an intriguing first month of games that opens
at Lone Star Conference favorite Angelo State.That challenge will be followed by a Week 2 trip to Utah Tech
(formerly Dixie State) now in Division I FCS.&nbsp; RMAC play begins with a rivalry
showdown against Black Hills State in Chadron in Week 3 and September
closes out with defending RMAC co-champion Western Colorado in Gunnison, the
