TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup after dethroning the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The Avalanche beat the Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final behind a goal and an assist from Nathan MacKinnon. Tampa Bay fell two victories short of becoming the NHL's first three-peat champion since the early 1980s New York Islanders dynasty. Colorado's core led by MacKinnon, captain Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen and longest-tenured player Erik Johnson finally got the job done after years of playoff disappointments. It's the franchise's third championship and first since 2001.

It was a show week for the Post 12 Chadron FNBO Nationals teams. The Preps started the week with a 14-8 loss to Scottsbluff. The Seniors were the only other team in action taking losses to Broken Bow and Danenbrog-Cairo-Boelus (DCB). In the 9-3 loss to Broken Bow, the Nats gave up seven runs in the first two innings, but settled in allowing just two the rest of the game. Dawson Dunbar started the game going five innings and striking out seven. Seth Gaswick came on in relief going one inning.

Two-time defending state champions, DCB got off to a hot start and kept it going winning the game in five innings 14-1. The Nats struggled at the plate against some very tough pitching. Cody Hall and Dawson Dunbar got the only two hits of the game. Noah Brown took the loss with Caden Buskirk coming in to spell Brown for the final 3 innings. Following the DCB game, the team went on to Omaha and watched Oklahoma defeat Texas A&amp;M on Friday.

The Juniors and Seniors both have a busy week coming up with the Juniors hosting their annual wood bat tournament this weekend and the Seniors participating in a tournament in Alliance that starts Wednesday.

The Box Butte County Bad Boys 11U baseball team continued its busy month of June with tournaments in Laramie, Wyoming, on June 4-5 and Scottsbluff over Father’s Day Weekend. The Bad Boys opened the Laramie tournament on June 4 with the hometown Laramie Regulators. That game saw the Bad Boys pound out 14 hits in a 13-3 victory. In the nightcap, the Bad Boys would blow a 9-run lead to the Colorado Blues resulting in a 15-15 tie. The teams combined for 33 hits in the contest.

On Sunday, the Bad Boys played a back-and-forth affair with WYCO. After a scoreless first inning, WYCO would score one in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. The Bad Boys answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Bad Boys lead 2-1 in the top of the fourth when WYCO plated four runs. The Bad Boys answered with three runs in the bottom half. Six innings were not enough, and the game went into extra innings with the game tied a 6 apiece. WYCO plated one in the top half of the second. The Bad Boys were unable to score in the bottom half resulting in a 7-6 loss. The loss placed the Bad Boys in the third-place game where they defeated the Colorado Blues 11-10.

Over Father’s Day weekend the Bad Boys battled heat as well as multiple injuries but still managed a record of 4-1. The Bad Boys started on Friday night with a tight 7-6 victor over the Colorado Cougars from Windsor, Colorado. The highlight of the game was Israel Garcia’s first home run of the season. The Bad Boys would finish pool play with an undefeated 3-0 record with an 18-11 win over WYCO followed by a 17-3 drubbing of the Valor Vikings. The Bad Boys would finish the tournament with the most runs scored in the tournament.

The quarterfinal game saw the Bad Boys battle the always formidable Casper Crush. After three scoreless innings, the Bad Boys would plate four runs in the bottom of the 4th to enter the 5th with a 4-0 lead. Casper would not go away scoring three in the top of the fifth. The game entered the sixth inning with the Bad Boys leading 5-3. The Crush would tie the game at five. The Bad Boys would plate one in the bottom of the 6th to earn the walk-off win 6-5.

The semi-final game saw the Bad Boys and the Westco Revolution play another classic back and forth game between these two teams. Ultimately Westco would prevail with a 5-4 victory. Westco would go on to defeat Gillette, Wyoming in the championship.

The Bad Boys now sit at 13-6-1 on the season. They will be in Cheyenne, Wyoming June 25 and 26

McMahon delivers game winning hit late to top Padres

The Nebraska High School Finals Rodeo features the top thirty contestants in each of thirteen events (top sixty in the team roping.) The high school students have accumulated points throughout the fall and spring seasons, and the following is a look at several of the event leaders.

Dane Pokorny&nbsp;is back to defend his 2021 steer wrestling title.

The Stapleton cowboy, a 2022 graduate of Thedford High School, leads the steer wrestling this year, a mere eight points ahead of his friend, Coy Johnston.

His rodeo year has been good, he said, “consistent. I’ve been picking up points every weekend.”

Not only does Pokorny excel in rodeo, but he was part of the Thedford High football team that won the state runner-up title in Class D2. He was all-state honorary caption and all-state running back, and started all four years in both football and basketball.

And this is the last state finals rodeo for Pokorny’s horse, Shorty. He will be retired after Pokorny rides him at state finals, and, if he qualifies, at the National High School Finals. After that, it’s out to pasture, to be “loved on,” Pokorny said.

Pokorny is the son of Brad and Paula Pokorny. He has also qualified for the finals in the team roping.

Reagan McIntyre, Grand Island, has burst into the high school rodeo world in grand fashion.

The fifteen-year-old cowgirl who just finished her freshman year is leading two events: the breakaway roping and the goat tying,&nbsp;<a>with a double-digit lead in the breakaway over&nbsp;</a>the number two cowgirl, Makayla Wray.

McIntyre excelled in junior high rodeo, finishing at the National Junior High Finals in sixth place in the world in the breakaway. “That gave me the confidence going into high school,” she said. “I knew there was tons of tough competition (in high school) so I’d have to take a step up, coming into the high school ranks.”

A student at Grand Island Northwest, she participates in volleyball, basketball and track, and was on the honor roll. Her 4x800 relay team finished seventh in Class B at the state track meet this year.

The oldest of four children of Jeremy and Karen McIntyre, Reagan admits the entire family is competitive when playing games, such as spoons. “It’s definitely pretty intense,” she laughed. “We have pretty much stopped playing because (the games) get so competitive.”

She has a plan for state finals. “I’m just going to go into it how I go into every run. It’s just another weekend where you have to lay down solid runs and stay on the top of your game.” She has also qualified for the state finals in the pole bending, team roping and barrel racing.

In the bareback riding,&nbsp;Tate Miller&nbsp;is confidently in first place.

The Springview cowboy has a six-point lead over the number two man, Spencer Denaeyer.

His strong rodeo season has been good, he said, after a weak showing at the 2021 National High School Finals Rodeo.

At Nationals last year, “I didn’t have the Nationals I’d have liked, and my confidence was down, coming into my junior year,” he said. “I’ve won a lot of (high school) rodeos this year, helping get my points up and my confidence built back up. I had a good season, so it boosted my confidence.”

Miller, who will be a senior at Keya Paha County High School this fall, plays football and is a member of the FFA and National Honor Society.

In the boys cutting,&nbsp;Cooper Bass&nbsp;sits atop the leaderboard.

The Brewster cowboy, a graduate of online high school, has had an exceptional year in the cutting. “I’ve done very, very well,” he said. “My mare has been working great.”

He will also come into state finals in first place in the team roping, heading for Zach Bradley, and in a third event, the tie-down roping, in fourteenth place.

Because Bass has taken classes online, he’s had time for a job, working at three different sale barns, sometimes putting in 24 hour shifts. He also rides horses for others, putting thirty days of training on them.

Other leaders (as of press time) heading into the weekend’s finals include Hailey Witte, Crookston (barrel racing); Hunter Boydston, Grover, Colo. (bull riding); Brooke Forre, Newman Grove (girls cutting); Raina Swanson, Genoa (pole bending); Monte Bailey, Lakeside (saddle bronc riding); Sid Miller, Merna (tie-down roping) Brady Renner, Ericson (heeler); and Tatum Olson, Bloomfield (reined cow horse).

The thirteen events include bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, steer&nbsp;wrestling, team roping, breakaway roping, goat tying, pole bending, barrel racing, boys cutting, girls cutting, reined cow horse and bull riding.&nbsp;

The first go-round takes place June 10 at 11 am and 6 pm. The second go-round is June 11 at 11 am and 6 pm. After the two rounds, the top ten contestants in each event will advance to the short round on June 12 at 1 pm. The cutting will be held at 7 am on June 10-11, with the final round at 8 am on June 12. The reined cow horse will be at 10 am on June 10-11.

The top four in each event, after the state finals are over, qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo, held this year in Gillette, Wyo., July 17-23.

The 2022-2023 Miss Nebraska High School Rodeo Queen will be crowned prior to the performance on June 12.&nbsp;

Walton began the inning at second base and stayed there after pinch-hitter Brandon Crawford popped out. Luis González followed with a slow single to right field off Carlos Estevez that eluded Blackmon — who had earlier thrown a runner out at the plate — as Walton rounded third, then scampered home with the winning run. Former Nebraska head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/sports/football/roster/frank-solich/23079">Frank Solich</a>&nbsp;is one of nine FBS coaches to earn a spot on the 2023 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced the ballot of players and coaches on Monday morning. Solich in his first season of eligibility on the ballot after retiring as head coach at Ohio University in July of 2021. During his 22 seasons as a head coach, Solich compiled a record of 173-101, including a 58-19 record in six seasons as Nebraska's head coach from 1998 to 2003. Solich led the Huskers to the 1999 Big 12 Conference championship. NU added a co-Big 12 North Division title in 2001, when the Huskers met Miami in the Rose Bowl for the national championship. The Huskers finished No. 3 in the AP Poll in 1999 after beating Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl and rolling to a 22-6 win over Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game. Nebraska added a final No. 8 national ranking by the Associated Press in both 2000 and 2001. The 2001 Huskers featured the nation's top college player-Heisman Trophy winner and 2020 Hall of Fame inductee Eric Crouch. The Alliance First National Bank - Omaha Senior Spartans competed in the Black Hills Veterans Classic in Rapid City, June 2-5.&nbsp; &nbsp;The FNBO Spartans went 0-5 in the Tournament.&nbsp; The Spartans fell to the Gillette Riders 7-1 and to the 406 Flyers from Billings, Mt,&nbsp; 9-4 , on Thursday.&nbsp; Alliance matched up against Haswell Construction from Plattsmouth, Ne on Friday and lost a 12-0 decision, then Saturday, The Sturgis Post 33 Titans defeated the Spartan Srs 12-9.&nbsp; &nbsp;Alliance finished the tournament on Sunday falling to the Outlaw Baseball Club from Miles City, Mt, by a 10-7 score.&nbsp; The Senior Spartans see their record now at 6-10.&nbsp;

The Avalanche’s eight goals were tied for the most in a playoff game in franchise history. Both teams needed to use backup goaltenders. Edmonton's Mike Smith was pulled after giving up six goals and Darcy Kuemper left with an upper-body injury. Twelve Avs recorded at least a point and six had multi-point games.

The Post 12 Senior Nationals continued their hot start to the 2022 season going 4-1 last week. 

The team started out taking games from Bridgeport and Sheridan County by scores of 7-2 and 1-0. Dawson Dunbar threw a gem in the Sheridan County game going seven shutout innings and recording 19 strikeouts. Cody Hall was the winner of the Bridgeport game giving up just one run on three hits and striking out 10 himself.

Over the weekend, the Nats played in the Gering Memorial Day Tournament. On Friday they continued their winning ways taking down Sidney 5-2 and Buckley 7-3. Jordan Bissonette took the win over Sidney going 6 innings giving up just two unearned runs. In the second game, Noah Brown got the nod throwing four innings giving up just three runs striking out four. Caden Buskirk came in and finished the Bombers off taking the win throwing two shutout innings. The Nats then ran into a buzzsaw losing 12-0 to Casper on Sunday. Broc Berry took the loss in the run-rule shortened game that saw the Nats find just two hits.

The Junior and Prep teams also had a good week. The Juniors took down Bridgeport 13-0 and Sheridan County 17-2, improving their record to 2-2. 

The Prep team took on Hot Springs in a doubleheader Thursday. The Nats won both games, the first 5-2 and the second 7-3. On Saturday the Preps went to Rushville to play in the historic Modisett Park winning the game 18-7. Preps are now 5-0 on the year.

The Juniors and Seniors take on Alliance on Tuesday, May 31 and Bridgeport June 1. Both games are on the road with 5 pm starts. This weekend, Chadron Seniors host their annual wood bat tournament with games starting at 10:30 Saturday and Sunday.

Chadron Nationals Legion Baseball Update

By far the youngest team in the 27 years the Chadron State College Golf Classic has been played won the championship this past weekend at Ridgeview Country Club.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The team was made up of Chadron natives Jacksyn Behrends, Trevor Berry and Tyler Westlake along with Dom Yates, who was Berry’s teammate on the golf team at Central Wyoming College at Riverton this past spring.&nbsp; Their average age is just 20.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; They shot a 57, three strokes better than any other team, during the first round on Saturday when the full 18 holes were played. They maintained that margin on Sunday, when the Championship and First Flights were cut back to just nine holes because of the rain that arrived late in the afternoon. Their final score was an 87.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Berry said the two eagles on par-five holes on the back nine on Saturday was the a major factor in their victory. He added that their team was the 34th&nbsp;and final team to enter this year’s tourney.

LONDON (AP) — Miami punter Lou Hedley had to fly 13,000 miles to western Australia to cash in on his name.

The tattooed Aussie and thousands of other international athletes at American colleges have been told they can’t profit from their name, image and likeness on U.S. soil — though interpretations vary about what constitutes work — so some are trekking home to do it.

In Hedley’s case, it was a 37-hour journey that included a long stopover in Qatar.

“It’s a pain in the backside having to fly over but it’s all worth it,” Hedley told The Associated Press after a day of filming promotional spots for LifeWallet in the city of Perth, where he was also visiting family before his final season with the Hurricanes this fall. “I feel like I deserve to get a little bit of money, I’ve contributed wealth to the team (with) my name, image and likeness ... so it was good to kind of get compensated for what I’ve been doing the last three years.”

Hedley declined to specify an exact figure but confirmed his NIL deal is in line with his teammates at roughly $50,000. Miami attorney John Ruiz has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-business-mens-304bf21905369b71a8fc3c45ff4c2ed8">actively enlisting Hurricanes</a>&nbsp;on NIL deals through his LifeWallet healthcare company.

The 28-year-old Hedley, one of many Aussie punters in college football, said he didn’t sign anything until he touched down Down Under.

“The work is all done here, paid for over here. As long as I’m doing all my work in Australia, I’m getting paid in Australia, paying taxes in Australia and all that stuff, it’s all legal,” he said.

Nebraska basketball player Jaz Shelley also made a trip home to Australia for NIL deals, and teammate Isabelle Bourne planned to follow suit. Mustapha Amzil, a 6-foot-9 forward at Dayton, announced on social media that when he plays for the national team of his native Finland this summer he will be “open to any business and sponsorship deals.”

On the whole, though, international athletes are finding the NIL waters tricky to navigate, with mixed messages about what’s OK, even now almost a year after the NCAA&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.org/news/2021/6/30/ncaa-adopts-interim-name-image-and-likeness-policy.aspx" target="_blank">lifted restrictions</a>.

Some schools have told them to avoid NIL deals altogether because&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-sports-business-celebrity-endorsements-education-4abf78b5012911f02ebee4ee6d776d7d">they could jeopardize their visa status.</a>&nbsp;Others say off U.S. soil is fine. Ultimately, the federal government is the arbiter of visa questions and deportations.

“There’s a ton of ambiguity,” said Casey Floyd, co-founder of NOCAP Sports, which is working with athletes to secure deals and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.change.org/p/name-image-and-likeness-rights-for-international-student-athletes" target="_blank">advocating for regulatory clarity</a>. “You go to some schools and they are very flexible ... and then you have a lot of schools that they just don’t want to touch it because they’re so scared of the ramifications.”

West Virginia’s international athletes, for example, “are not participating in NIL opportunities due to the current application of federal immigration regulations,” spokesman Michael Fragale said. Drexel asked its foreign athletes to “please refrain from entering into a NIL agreement or engaging in compensated NIL activity,” Mladenka Tomasevic, executive director of the International Students and Scholars Services, wrote in February.

It’s a different story at Nebraska, where the women’s basketball program&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/HuskersWBB/status/1522663625260994560" target="_blank">tweeted</a>: “International NIL made possible!” adding that when Shelley and Bourne arrive on Australian soil “they will be legally eligible to participate in NIL activity.” Shelley then promoted her T-shirts and hoodies, as well as a Lincoln restaurant.

The University of Florida told its internationals planning NIL activity in their home countries to “&nbsp;<a href="https://internationalcenter.ufl.edu/f-1-student/f-1-status-requirements/employment/international-student-athletes-and-ncaa-nil-legislation" target="_blank">properly document their physical location</a>&nbsp;” by providing form I-94 arrival/departure records, ”flight itinerary, and port of entry stamp showing abroad.”

Cal basketball player Sam Alajiki of Ireland hopes to stay around Berkeley to promote Next Up Recruitment, a company based in Manchester, England, that helps athletes land scholarships.

“He’s literally going to be retweeting content. There’s no way that can be deemed as work,” said Next Up founder Ryan Cook, who has also explored holding payments in escrow or becoming an administrator of Alajiki’s social media account and publishing that way.

“The last thing we want to do is break anyone’s visa status,” he said. “We’re working with the Cal compliance team, as well, to make sure everything is OK. We’ve not received any pushback.”

Just in case, though, the deal doesn’t begin until September. By then, there may be specific guidance from the NCAA or relevant government agencies.

The NCAA’s&nbsp;<a href="https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/ncaa/NIL/NIL_QandA.pdf" target="_blank">initial advice</a>&nbsp;said international athletes are covered by the interim NIL policy but that students “may consider” consulting with their school’s compliance official “for guidance related to maintaining their immigration status and tax implications.” If they have questions, they should write to the U.S. Student and Exchange Visitor Program.

That program — SEVP — “continues to assess” the issue, said Sarah Loicano, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Foreign students at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/high-school-athlete-endorsement-deals-NIL-690ca4547e8a00bf06fbd20f1dc058d8">high school</a>&nbsp;and prep level also stand to gain.

TCU tight end Alexander Honig of Germany said he hasn’t pursued the “super small” deals he’s been offered.

Three Chadron State College sophomores will be competing at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships at Allendale, Mich., this weekend.
