&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. – March 14, 2022 –&nbsp;The Chadron State College softball team went 1-1 on Monday, with Northern State visiting for a non-conference doubleheader at CSC Softball Field. The Eagles'&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8061">Kenzi Garner</a>&nbsp;pitched a complete game shutout to win a pitching duel, 2-0, in a noon game, before the visitors exacted revenge in the bottom half of the doubleheader, winning 9-2. Garner scattered seven hits, only allowing the Wolves more than a single baserunner on one occasion, as her defense backed her up with a highlight reel of big plays. CSC scored both of its two runs – one earned, one unearned – in a fifth-inning push which saw second baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4556">Addison Spears</a>&nbsp;walk, shortstop&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8068">Jessica Strandlund</a>&nbsp;reach safely on an error, and both left fielder&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8065">Aliyah Rothstein</a>&nbsp;and pinch-hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8060">Paige Edwards</a>&nbsp;bat for singles. None of the NSU baserunners advanced safely past second base, with a seventh-inning throw from right fielder&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4560">Jessie Henchenski</a>&nbsp;arriving to third baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8071">Lauren Zimmerman</a>&nbsp;in time for a tag. Garner improved her record to 3-4, while the loss dropped NSU's Reagan Elrod to 2-4. Meghan Anderson of Northern was every bit as brilliant in her turn in the pitching circle in game two. The Wolves' ace pitched a complete-game two-hitter, limiting the Eagles to just one two-run homer in the second inning and a late-game single, both by Henchenski. Anderson recorded a personal best 16 strikeouts. The Northern State bats woke up in the second game as well. The Wolves slapped out 12 base hits, including three homers, and walked eight times. They also recorded a sac bunt and a sac fly. NSU was up 4-0 by the time Henchenksi's second-inning dinger cut it to 4-2, but the Wolves were too hot in the batter's box to be caught. They scored at least one run in each of the last four innings to finish up 9-2 after seven. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8046">Tia Kohl</a>&nbsp;took the loss for CSC after only one inning and three batters faced in the second. It was a tale of two halves for the Nebraska men's basketball team Wednesday night in the opening game of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis. The Huskers dominated the first half en route to a 14-point halftime lead, but Northwestern outscored Nebraska by 16 in the second half, as the Wildcats rallied for a 71-69 victory. The loss snapped Nebraska's three-game winning streak, as the Huskers ended their season with a 10-22 record. Northwestern, which defeated Nebraska for the third time this season, evened its record at 15-15 and advanced to play Iowa on Thursday. The Huskers stretched their 14-point halftime lead to 15 with 15:28 to play. But Northwestern responded to that 15-point deficit with a 14-0 run in less than three minutes. Nebraska continued to hold the lead until back-to-back 3-pointers put Northwestern in front by one with 6:24 remaining. From there, the lead changed hands twice and the game was tied twice before Chase Audige broke the final tie with the game-winning free throw 18.1 seconds remaining. Down one with the ball, Nebraska was whistled for an offensive foul on its next possession, giving the ball back to Northwestern. Boo Bouie then knocked down 1-of-2 free throws to make it a two-point game and&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=42978">Trey McGowens'</a>&nbsp;driving layup with two seconds left was blocked to seal Northwestern's victory. After shooting 52 percent in the first half, Nebraska shot just 32 percent in the second half, finishing the game at 43 percent overall. The Huskers went more than seven minutes without a field goal late in the game, during which time Nebraska saw its three-point lead turn into a four-point deficit. Overall, the Huskers made just two field goals over the final 10 minutes. Nebraska was effective at attacking the paint in the first half, outscoring the Wildcats 28-6 in the paint in the opening 20 minutes. But Northwestern outscored Nebraska by 14 in the paint in the second half. That stretch ended with a 10-0 run that put Nebraska on top 35-20 with 3:45 remaining in the half. Defensively, Nebraska held Northwestern to only two field goals over the final eight minutes of the first half. Thanks to the defense and an efficient offense, Nebraska took a 39-25 lead into the locker room after Verge capped a superb half with a layup just before the first-half buzzer. Verge had nine points, five rebounds and five assists in the opening 20 minutes, while Walker led Nebraska with 11 first-half points. The beginning of the second half featured a series of small runs by both teams. Northwestern scored the first five points of the period to quickly cut the lead to nine. After the lead was trimmed to eight, Nebraska scored four straight points to push its advantage back to double digits. Following a Northwestern basket, the Huskers scored five straight points to cap a larger 9-2 run that gave Nebraska its biggest lead at 50-35 with 15:28 to play. But Northwestern came back in a big way. The Wildcats used a 14-0 run over the next three minutes to make it a 50-49 game with 12:24 remaining. At the end of the run, the Wildcats were 9-of-10 from the field in the second half, including 3-of-3 from the 3-point line. Following the 14-0 run, Nebraska scored six of the next eight points to stretch the lead to five halfway through the period. Northwestern cut the lead back to one a minute later before Verge converted a three-point play and Walker knocked down a free throw to give Nebraska a 60-55 win with eight minutes remaining. But Verge's basket was the Huskers' only field goal over the next 7:08 and Nebraska's second-to-last field goal of the game. The Huskers continued to lead by five until Northwestern hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 63-62 lead, the Wildcats' first lead since the 13-minute mark of the first half. Nebraska got the lead back on a pair of Walker free throws before Northwestern built its biggest lead at 69-65 with 1:49 to play. But Nebraska would not go down quietly.&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=42989">Bryce McGowens</a>&nbsp;hit a basket and Verge knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 69 with 1:01 to play. The Huskers then forced a missed shot on Northwestern's ensuing possession, but the Wildcats got the offensive rebound which eventually led to Audige's game-winning free throw. After the lead was trimmed to eight, Nebraska scored four straight points to push its advantage back to double digits. Following a Northwestern basket, the Huskers scored five straight points to cap a larger 9-2 run that gave Nebraska its biggest lead at 50-35 with 15:28 to play. But Northwestern came back in a big way. The Wildcats used a 14-0 run over the next three minutes to make it a 50-49 game with 12:24 remaining. At the end of the run, the Wildcats were 9-of-10 from the field in the second half, including 3-of-3 from the 3-point line. Following the 14-0 run, Nebraska scored six of the next eight points to stretch the lead to five halfway through the period. Northwestern cut the lead back to one a minute later before Verge converted a three-point play and Walker knocked down a free throw to give Nebraska a 60-55 win with eight minutes remaining. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m., with doors opening 90 minutes prior to first serve. The Huskers will also sign autographs after the match.&nbsp; Tickets will go on sale through Etix and at the Heartland Events Center Box Office at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 10. All tickets will be reserved at $10. There will be a handling charge on all tickets purchased from Etix. No tickets will be sold through the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office. Nebraska last played in Grand Island in the 2015 spring season, sweeping Kansas State in front of a sold-out crowd of 6,006 at the Heartland Events Center. The 8-0 run gave the Huskers a 33-30 lead with 4:34 left in the opening half and Nebraska led the rest of the way. With their second Big Ten road win in three days, the Huskers improved to 9-21 on the season and 3-16 in conference action. In a battle of the Big Ten's top two freshmen,&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=42989">Bryce McGowens</a>&nbsp;was outstanding for the Big Red. He scored 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting while knocking down 8-of-9 free throws. McGowens scored 14 second-half points to help the Huskers hold the lead. &nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- February 26, 2022 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College men's basketball season didn't turn out as well as was hoped, but the Eagles ended it at home with a pulsating 89-87 win over the pesky Colorado Christian Cougars on Saturday night. &nbsp; The game was tight all the way and featured plenty of impressive shooting by both teams. There were 11 ties and 14 lead changes, and neither ever led by more than seven points. The Eagles were 26-of-55 from the field, including a season-high of 14-of-28 on 3-pointers, to go with 23-of-29 from the free throw line. The Cougars sank 31-of-60 field goal shots while going 13-of-25 from behind the arc, and 12-of-16 at the charity stripe. The Eagles didn't take the lead for keeps until the final 2:45 when&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4663">CJ Jennings's</a>&nbsp;jump shot while he was on the fly swirled around the rim and finally dropped through the nets to make the score 84-83. After Chadron State got a stop,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8009">Mason Hiemstra</a>&nbsp;made a determined, driving, "hop and stop" layup to put the Eagles up by three with 1:45 remaining.&nbsp; After Christian's 6-10 center Isaiah Alonzo sank two free throws with 1:16 left, each team missed a shot on its next possession. &nbsp;The Eagles' Teddy Parham grabbed the rebound following the Cougars' miss, and while tangled up with a Cougar, shuffled the ball off to teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4653">Marcus Jefferson</a>&nbsp;with 17.2 seconds remaining. Jefferson was immediately fouled and made both free shots to give CSC an 88-85 lead. The Cougars' hot-shooting Ross Williams, who finished with 37 points, had a rare miss on a three-pointer, but Alonzo grabbed the rebound and scored with 3.6 seconds still showing. As soon as the Eagles got the ball inbounds, Jennings was fouled again. He made the first shot, but he missed the second. Alonzo got the rebound and hurled the ball the length of the court, but it didn't connect. Jennings, the only senior on the active roster, paced the Eagles with 27 points, 19 of them in the first half, when he was 5-of-9 from 3-point range.&nbsp; Parham added a season-high 20 points that included 4-of-5 from behind the arc, Jefferson finished with 16 points, half of them free throws, and Hiemstra scored 15. Williams, a 5-10 senior from Detroit, got his 37 points on 13-of-21 from the field, including 7-of-10 from long range and 4-4 on free throws.&nbsp; Alonzo finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds, while another small guard, DJ McDonald, added 14 points and was credited with eight assists. Jennings leads CSC to exciting finish in season finale victory over CCU

CHADRON, Neb -- February 26, 2022 --&nbsp;After a 79-66 win by Colorado Christian (9-18, 6-15 RMAC) during Saturday night's&nbsp;Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's basketball game, the Chadron State College women will finish with a 7-19 overall record and 6-15 conference record to close out the 2021-22 season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Cougars took advantage of their offensive rebounds, scoring 22 second-chance points versus the Eagles' seven points. They also outrebounded the Eagles 50-41.&nbsp;

The first quarter was slow as both teams each scored only 12 points. No three-pointers were&nbsp;landed,&nbsp;and eight fouls were called between both teams.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Worrell was the team's deep threat of the season. She recorded 53 three-pointers on 150 attempts for a percentage of 35.3%.&nbsp;

Peters spent the most amount of time on the court in 2021. Her 821 minutes far outpaced the rest of her team with the next closest having 659 minutes. She capped off the season with a team-high of&nbsp;79 assists and 29 steals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mitchell's Peters closes CSC career with huge 22 point night in season finale

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg will return for a fourth season but has agreed to a pay cut and a reduced buyout if he’s fired after next season. Athletic Director Trev Alberts made the announcement on Thursday night. Hoiberg is 21-65 overall and 6-49 in the Big Ten entering a home game against No. 25 Iowa on Friday. The Huskers are 7-20 this season, with just one win in Big Ten play. Hoiberg’s salary will be reduced to $3.25 million from $3.50 million, and he will forfeit a $500,000 retention bonus. His contract buyout was reduced from $18.5 million to $11 million.

&nbsp; RAPID CITY, S.D. -- February 17, 2022 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College men's basketball team made four of its first six field goal shots while jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the opening five minutes Thursday night in Rapid City. &nbsp;But homestanding South Dakota Mines sank four three-pointers in the next 3 ½ minutes while going ahead 17-13 and led the rest of the way en route to a 78-67 win in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game. The Hardrockers shot 52% from the field, including 12-of-24 from three-point range. Eagles made only 39% of their field goal tries, and it was one of those games when a bulk of their long-range shots swirled in and out of the basket.&nbsp; They were just six of 30 from behind the arc. After the Eagles made five-of-six free throws in less than a minute, they trailed by just 21-18 with 8:30 remaining in the first half. However, they sank just three of their next 13 field goal shots and were behind 37-25 at halftime. Both teams scored 42 points in the second half, when the Hardrockers' lead ranged from nine to 18 points. Mines was 28-of-54 from the field and 11-of-18 at the free throw line. The Eagles were 23-of-59 on their field goal shots and 15-19 at the line. Keagan Smith, a 6-foot-6 freshman, led the Hardrockers with 23 points, point guard Alejandro Rama, a 6-3 sophomore, scored 21 and Brevin Walter and Kolten Mortensen each added 14 points. Smith made four treys, Rama three and the other two each hit two. Teddy Parham scored 15 points,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4652">KJ Harris</a>&nbsp;14, Mason Heimstra 13 and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4653">Marcus Jefferson</a>&nbsp;`10 for the Eagles.&nbsp; Jefferson was the game's top rebounder with nine. Harris grabbed seven for CSC and both Rama and Walter matched that number for Mines. Both teams are now 9-15 for the season. Mines is 7-12 and Chadron State is 5-12 in the RMAC. BY: CON MARSHALL CSC Sports Information&nbsp; RAPID CITY, S.D. -- February 17, 2022 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College men's basketball team made four of its first six field goal shots while jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the opening five minutes Thursday night in Rapid City. &nbsp;But homestanding South Dakota Mines sank four three-pointers in the next 3 ½ minutes while going ahead 17-13 and led the rest of the way en route to a 78-67 win in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game. The Hardrockers shot 52% from the field, including 12-of-24 from three-point range. Eagles made only 39% of their field goal tries, and it was one of those games when a bulk of their long-range shots swirled in and out of the basket.&nbsp; They were just six of 30 from behind the arc. After the Eagles made five-of-six free throws in less than a minute, they trailed by just 21-18 with 8:30 remaining in the first half. However, they sank just three of their next 13 field goal shots and were behind 37-25 at halftime. Both teams scored 42 points in the second half, when the Hardrockers' lead ranged from nine to 18 points. Mines was 28-of-54 from the field and 11-of-18 at the free throw line. The Eagles were 23-of-59 on their field goal shots and 15-19 at the line. Keagan Smith, a 6-foot-6 freshman, led the Hardrockers with 23 points, point guard Alejandro Rama, a 6-3 sophomore, scored 21 and Brevin Walter and Kolten Mortensen each added 14 points. Smith made four treys, Rama three and the other two each hit two. Teddy Parham scored 15 points,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4652">KJ Harris</a>&nbsp;14, Mason Heimstra 13 and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4653">Marcus Jefferson</a>&nbsp;`10 for the Eagles.&nbsp; Jefferson was the game's top rebounder with nine. Harris grabbed seven for CSC and both Rama and Walter matched that number for Mines. Both teams are now 9-15 for the season. Mines is 7-12 and Chadron State is 5-12 in the RMAC. Cold spell before half creates separation in SD Mines win over CSC

RAPID CITY, S.D. -- February 17, 2022 --&nbsp;The South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers defeated&nbsp;the Chadron State College women's basketball team (7-17, 6-13 RMAC) 65-64 during&nbsp;a well-contested Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference battle Thursday night in Rapid City.&nbsp;

Both teams traded blows from start to finish resulting in 15&nbsp;lead changes. It was a slow second quarter and a missed layup in the concluding seconds of the game that sealed a winless road record for the Eagles this season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The first quarter started with the Eagles scoring first with a&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8029">Samiyah Worrell</a>&nbsp;jump shot in the paint. The Hardrockers responded with two shots from the field&nbsp;and a three-pointer to take a 7-2 lead. Then Worrell landed back-to-back threes to take the lead back 8-7.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After a layup and free throw gave Mines a 14-12 lead,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4420">Olivia Waufle</a>&nbsp;swished the Eagles' third&nbsp;three-pointer of the quarter at 2:30.&nbsp;

Worrell's third and final three-pointer came at 1:25 to give the Eagles a 20-14 lead, which would be cut down to 20-17 after a three was made by Mines' Ryan Weiss with six seconds left in the quarter. The Eagles would not land another three-pointer for the rest of the game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Eagles were held to only 10 points in the second quarter while Mines scored 15 to take a 32-30 lead at halftime. During the quarter Chadron State went 4-12 on field goals, 0-1 on three-pointers, and 2-4 on free throws.&nbsp;

Though the Hardrockers maintained the lead during the third quarter, the Eagles never trailed by more than four points as the offense shot 57.1% on field goals (8-14) and 100% on free throws (2-2) for 18 points. A last-second jumper by Waufle tied the game 48-48 at the end of the third quarter.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The fourth quarter was a nail-biter that showcased eight lead changes.&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4644">Ashayla Powers</a>&nbsp;gave the Eagles a 52-48 lead after landing a layup and two free throws. After another Eagles free throw, Mines responded with two shots from the charity line and two jumpers in the paint to take a one-point lead at 54-53.&nbsp;

The two teams went back and forth until Powers tied the score at 64 with a free throw at 0:15. The Hardrockers&nbsp;subsequently kept the ball away until Worrell was able to foul Madelyn Heiser to&nbsp;force&nbsp;two free throw attempts.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Heiser made her first free throw but missed her second. CSC's&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4343">Bailey Brooks</a>&nbsp;rebounded the ball and called for a timeout with six seconds remaining in the game.&nbsp;

With enough time left for the Eagles to take one last shot, Brooks passed the ball inbounds to Powers. In double-coverage Powers missed the game-winning layup as time expired, giving the Hardrockers a 65-64 win over the Eagles.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Eagles' final games of the season will be this Friday and Saturday&nbsp;at home versus MSU Denver (17-6, 13-5 RMAC) and Colorado Christian (7-16, 4-13 RMAC). Both games tip-off at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;

CHADRON, Neb. -- February 15, 2022 --&nbsp;Longtime Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference&nbsp;rival&nbsp;Black Hills State (16-8, 14-4 RMAC) forced multiple turnovers in a 58-46 dismantling of the Chadron State College women's basketball team (7-16, 6-12 RMAC) Tuesday night in the Chicoine Center.&nbsp;

The Yellow Jackets used half-court press defense for all four quarters of the game, overwhelming the Eagles' offense who turned the ball over 24 times. The Eagles also shot cold going 34% on field goals (16-47), 18.2% on three-pointers (2-11), and 57.1% on free throws (12-21).&nbsp;

The first quarter started with the Jackets scoring six unanswered points off a three-pointer and three free throws.&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4348">Brittni McCully</a>&nbsp;landed a layup to&nbsp;break the ice for the Eagles at 5:30. Black Hills landed two more three-pointers to pull away from Chadron State, ending the quarter with a 21-11 lead.&nbsp;

CSC began to warm up as both teams scored 14 points in the second quarter.&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8014">Riley Aiono</a>&nbsp;swished two field goals and a free throw during the Eagles' best offensive performance of the game. The score at halftime was 35-25 Jackets.&nbsp;

The Yellow Jackets missed nine of their first 10 shots&nbsp;to start the third quarter.&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8029">Samiyah Worrell</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4420">Olivia Waufle</a>&nbsp;tried to capitalize when they landed back-to-back three-pointers to trim the Jackets' lead to 35-31 at 8:51.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Eagles also shot cold going 34% on field goals (16-47), 18.2% on three-pointers (2-11), and 57.1% on free throws (12-21).&nbsp;The first quarter started with the Jackets scoring six unanswered points off a three-pointer and three free throws.&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4348">Brittni McCully</a>&nbsp;landed a layup to&nbsp;break the ice for the Eagles at 5:30. Black Hills landed two more three-pointers to pull away from Chadron State, ending the quarter with a 21-11 lead.&nbsp;CSC began to warm up as both teams scored 14 points in the second quarter.&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8014">Riley Aiono</a>&nbsp;swished two field goals and a free throw during the Eagles' best offensive performance of the game. The game was well played in many ways. The teams combined to make 24 of 52 shots from 3-point range, including Chadron State's 13 of 27 showing, and there were only 23 turnovers. Highlands is now 11-11 overall and 6-10 in the RMAC and the Eagles are 9-14 and 5-10.&nbsp; The Cowboys led 30-16 with eight minutes to play in the first half. The Eagles sank five 3-pointers in the next six minutes to cut the difference to 39-37, but Highlands scored the final five points of the half and led 44-37 at intermission. The Cowboys were hot again early in the second half while building their biggest lead--58-41-- with 13 minutes remaining.&nbsp; Chadron State again fought back and trailed by just five points—62-57—with eight minutes left.
