&nbsp; RAPID CITY, S.D. – 26, Mar. 2021 –&nbsp;The Chadron State College volleyball team (4-10 overall, 3-10 RMAC) lost their final match of the regular season on the road on Friday against the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers (5-9 overall, 5-7 RMAC). The match went to five sets, and the Eagles fell 25-19, 24-26, 25-22, 22-25, 4-15. Mines' Shyann Bastian recorded a rare triple-double, leading her team with 16 kills and 23 assists, and adding 20 digs with one block assist in the win. Before going to extra points in the second set, the Eagles repeatedly came back from behind, never allowing their opponent to get more than a four-point lead. After keeping the match neck-and-neck all night, the Hardrockers substantially pulled away from the Eagles in the fifth set to secure the victory. Mines started the fifth set 9-1. For the Eagles,&nbsp;Rhiannon Nez&nbsp;was the only player earning double-digit kills on offense, with 10. She was followed closely behind by&nbsp;Chandler Hageman&nbsp;and&nbsp;Olivia Moten-Schell&nbsp;with eight each.&nbsp;Lexi Hurtado&nbsp;and&nbsp;Amelia Berg&nbsp;each had six kills. The duo of Hageman and Moten-Schell had nine total blocks between them while Hurtado snuck in six block assists. With the loss, CSC is near the bottom of the RMAC standings, with a performance indicator formula to determine which teams qualify for the league's postseason.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Alliance Girls Basketball team celebrated their season and presented team awards Thursday night. Coach Heidi Manion summed up the season saying... despite only 1 win and a coaching change, the players continued to work hard and compete and were much improved at the end of the season.&nbsp; Coach Manion said, her coaching goal has always been.. "to see the players leaving the program as better people"... which was the case this year.&nbsp; &nbsp;Coach Manion also thanked assistant coach Dean Bair for his help and gave special thanks to Seniors..Payten Gibson, Olivia Knapp and Keeley Mazanec for being great leaders and teammates.&nbsp; Coach Manion also presented the following team awards, which were voted on by the players.

(AP) Colorado Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland is expected to miss at least a month with a strained pitching shoulder. The Rockies were fearing even worse news after Freeland bent down following a pitch in an exhibition game and grabbed his shoulder. But an MRI revealed nothing more than a strain. He will start the season on the injured list. The candidates to hold his place in the rotation are Chi Chi González, Dereck Rodríguez and Ryan Rolison.

Abdullah will return for a fourth season with the Vikings. They first acquired him via waiver claim in 2018 after he was let go by the Detroit Lions. Abdullah has mostly played on special teams for the Vikings, including as a kickoff returner. He has 31 carries for 157 yards and 24 catches for 156 yards and three touchdowns in 39 games for Minnesota.

Discipline, Intensity and Togetherness was the main theme for the Alliance Boys Basketball team for 2020-21.&nbsp; By following those rally words the Bulldogs were able to go 19-6 this season.&nbsp; The players, coaches and families celebrated the year at a team banquet Monday night.&nbsp; 

Head Coach Michael Baker spoke about how the team played together with discipline and intensity all season to accomplish several goals.&nbsp; The Bulldogs were the Western Conference Tournament Champs for the first time in the 17 year history of the event.&nbsp; Also Conference regular season and B-8 Sub District Champions and finished just short of a 3rd straight trip to the State Tournament. The Bulldogs were runner up in a very competitive Holiday Tournament in Broken Bow and were able to win twice in Scottsbluff. Coach Baker said maybe the most satisfying win was the triple overtime thriller in Ogallala.&nbsp; Coach Baker thanked the AHS administration, assistant coaches Matt Whitney and Brandt Banzhaf, Senior managers Caisey Pfeiffer, Karly Wangler and Alex Pfeiffer and the players families for their suport all season, and gave special recognition to this years seniors.....Jaden Kelly, Jaron Matulka, Crayten Cyza, Brantz Halouska, Chase King, Caeson Clarke, Jaxon Bair and Chase Boyer.&nbsp; Coach talked about how they all played their roles and were great role models for the younger players.&nbsp; Coach Baker challenged the younger players to make a commitment to working in the off season and look for thier turn to be team leaders next year.

AHS Boys Basketball team awards presented

A former western Nebraska basketball star is headed back west to finish his college career.&nbsp; Dru Kuxhausen announced on his Twitter feed that he will be transferring to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Kuxhausen starred at Scottsbluff High School and went on to compete for one season at Chadron State, as well as a season at Western Nebraska Community College before heading south to McNeese State in Louisiana for two seasons.&nbsp; Because of the pandemic he'll have one final year of eligibility left to compete for UNC.

Kuxhausen joins a Bears team that has two of his former college head coaches on staff, including Houston Reed from his time at CSC.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Elgin Baylor, the Lakers' 11-time NBA All-Star, has died. The Lakers said Monday that Baylor died of natural causes in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter by his side.

 </figure>LOS ANGELES (AP) — Elgin Baylor, the Lakers' 11-time NBA All-Star, has died. The Lakers said Monday that Baylor died of natural causes in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter by his side. &nbsp; LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;- The No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team swept Iowa for the second time this week with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-13 win on Saturday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Nebraska (12-2) hit a season-best .397 and held Iowa to .013 hitting, the best offensive and defensive performances by the Huskers this season. It was also Iowa's lowest hitting percentage of the season.&nbsp; Jazz Sweet&nbsp;had a season-high 12 kills on .733 hitting to go with three blocks to lead the Huskers.&nbsp;Lexi Sun&nbsp;also added 12 kills on .526 hitting with six digs and three blocks.&nbsp;Lauren Stivrins&nbsp;racked up six kills and two blocks, while&nbsp;Callie Schwarzenbach&nbsp;had four kills on five swings (.800) to go with a match-high five blocks.&nbsp; Nicklin Hames&nbsp;set 31 assists and had a pair of aces and seven digs.&nbsp;Kenzie Knuckles&nbsp;had a match-high eight digs.&nbsp; Nebraska had decisive advantages in kills (40-22), assists (39-21), blocks (8-5) and digs (31-18). Head Coach&nbsp;John Cook&nbsp;won his 600th career match at Nebraska, giving him a 600-83 (.878) record in 21 years as Nebraska's head coach.&nbsp; Iowa (3-13) had no player with more than five kills for the match. Amiya Jones and Edina Schmidt both totaled five on the night.&nbsp; Set 1:&nbsp;Iowa jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of blocks, but the Huskers answered with a 4-0 run of their own to tie the score. Iowa reclaimed a 6-4 lead before the Big Red reeled off seven of the next eight points to go up 11-7. Sun had two kills and combined with Schwarzenbach for a block. Sun and Sweet then added back-to-back kills to help NU go up 14-8, and a kill by Kubik preceded a block by Stivrins and Sweet that put the Huskers up 17-9. The Huskers pulled away with four of the final five points to win 25-14. Schwarzenbach had a kill and block with Sweet, who also added another kill. #5 Huskers sweep Iowa again

&nbsp; DURANGO, Colo. – March 20, 2021 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College volleyball team was in Durango on Saturday to visit the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks and play a neutral match against the Colorado Christian Cougars. 

CSC split the pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches, winning over host FLC, 3-0 (25-22,25-23,25-17) and dropping the second match 3-0 (17-25, 23-25, 14-25) to CCU. "Our first match was great," said CSC Head Volleyball Coach&nbsp;Jennifer Stadler. "We passed well, which allowed our offense to be in system and execute at a high level. We came out flat in our second one and never could get things going. CCU played well." CSC, now 4-9 (3-8 RMAC) had its second-best hitting percentage of the season in the first match, which began at 11 a.m. The Eagles hit at a .214 clip, led by middles&nbsp;Chandler Hageman, at .417, and&nbsp;Rhiannon Nez, at .389. A five-point head start gave CSC the lead for good in set one, in which it led by as many as nine points at 20-11. Nez scored the winning kill. In the second, CSC had to rally after a 5-1 surge by FLC to start the set. Besides scoring the first point of the match, the Eagles took their next lead at 18-17 and went back and forth with the Skyhawks down the stretch before outside hitter&nbsp;Lexi Hurtado's&nbsp;kill at set point. The Eagles grabbed early momentum in the third and final set with the first six points, and later maxed out their lead at 21-13. They had their best set hitting percentage of the match with a .273, limiting hitting errors to only five. Hurtado finished with 11 kills, two service aces, and eight digs to lead the Eagles with 13.0 points. Nez was second with 10 kills and one block assist for 10.5 points. Fort Lewis fell to 4-8 (4-7 RMAC) with the loss. Things shifted away from the Eagles' favor in the CCU match. In set one, CSC went the first 11 points without a kill, and gave up seven of the final eight in a 25-17 CCU win. The Eagles played better in the second, grabbing an 8-5 lead early. However, following a timeout by the Cougars, CSC succumbed to an 11-1 run from which they were unable to recover. Despite gaining five of those points back on a streak of their own, the Cougars outraced the Eagles to 25, winning by two. Set three was the shortest, with CSC notching only six kills as a team in a 25-14 Cougars win. For CCU, which improved to 4-8 (4-6 RMAC), middle hitter Jasa Scheierman provided 11.0 points on six total blocks, five kills, and a pair of aces. In two matches, Hurtado finished the day with 20 kills, good for 3.33 per set. Chadron State's season finale is set for this Friday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in Rapid City, South Dakota. The South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers host a match which could determine the postseason fate of several teams vying for RMAC Tournament bids.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chadron State College High School Indoor Track & Field Invite - BOYS RESULTS

Alliance High School Senior Mario Garza has signed to become part of the first football team to play at Mount Marty University in Yankton, South Dakota.&nbsp; Mario was a 2 year starter on the offensive and defensive line for the AHS Bulldogs and was an All Western Conference and Honorable Mention All State selection his senior season.&nbsp; Mario says he plans to play offensive line in college and is excited to be part of a brand new team. Mario also plays baseball for the Alliance Spartans, He is the son of Mariana and Mario Garza of Alliance. 

Mount Marty wll play their inaugural football season this fall.  This will be the first collegiate football team in Yankton since 1984, when Yankton College closed.&nbsp; New Head Coach Mike Woodley has put together a staff and is actively recruiting players.&nbsp; This year will be the second recruiting class for the Lancers. The players presently on campus went through a fall practice schedule last year.  The Lancers will play their first game September 4 at home vs Dakota Wesleyan University.&nbsp; Mount Marty is a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference and the NAIA.

High school track and field will return to western Nebraska on Saturday when Chadron State College will host its High School Indoor Meet in the Nelson Physical Activity Center. The field events will begin at 9 a.m. and the running events at 11.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Riley Northrup, the Chadron State head coach, said 10 area schools have entered.&nbsp; They are Alliance, Bayard, Chadron, Cody-Kilgore, Creek Valley, Gering, Hay Springs, Hemingford, Kimball and Scottsbluff.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The first indoor meet in the long-awaited Activity Center took place on March 28, 1987, soon after the facility opened.&nbsp; It had taken place 33 consecutive years until the COVID-19 invasion caused last year’s meet to be cancelled just a week or so before it was due to take place.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Northrup said many high school coaches appreciate having an early-season meet they can count on. It helps them learn a lot about their teams and it energizes the athletes, giving them the opportunity to compete under favorable condition.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The meet will be open to the public.&nbsp; Those attending will be required to wear masks.

10 schools competing in CSC high school track meet

Chadron State College volleyball heads on the road this weekend to play in a weekend pod against Fort Lewis and Colorado Christian. Both matches will be played on Saturday, March 20 with the first match against Fort Lewis at 11 a.m. and the second match against Colorado Christian at 2 p.m. Due to COVID concerns, no spectators will be permitted at the event. Fort Lewis (4-7 overall, 4-7 RMAC) currently sits at eighth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and will face the Eagles after coming off a loss to No. 23 Regis, 0-3. The Eagles are one game behind overall and in league play at 3-8 (2-7 RMAC). Offensively, the Cougars have 469 kills and are averaging 11.4 points per set while the Eagles have 401 kills and are averaging 9.5 kills per set. Fort Lewis's lone senior, Alexa Treguboff of Peoria, Ariz., leads the Skyhawks with 118 kills followed closely behind by Madi Nash of Tucson, Ariz., who has 93 kills on the season. Avynn La Rose, Kendall Deeter, and Cameron Callahan have 16, 14, and 13 blocks on the season respectively which combine to over half of the team's blocks. Kamryn Lopez, a sophomore defensive specialist from Albuquerque, N.M., has the most digs for Fort Lewis at 148 and an average of 3.7 per set. Colorado Christian (3-8 overall, 3-6 RMAC) is coming off of a win against Western Colorado since their matchup versus Regis was postponed. As a team, CCU has 475 kills and has allowed 486. Senior outside hitter Jacey Johnson of Rosalia, Wash., has 86 of those kills while senior middle hitter Jasa Scheierman of Aurora, Neb., has 82. Senior setter Maddie Burns of Arvada, Colo. is her team's assist leader with 346. Christa Tucker, a junior defensive specialist from Caledonia, Wis., doubles her teammates with 132 digs, an average of 3.57 per set. Scheierman also doubles her teammates with 30 total blocks on the season. In comparison, the Eagles are led by sophomore&nbsp;Lexi Hurtado&nbsp;with 85 kills, junior&nbsp;Breshawna Kelly&nbsp;with 231 assists, senior&nbsp;Karli Noble&nbsp;with 169 digs, and senior&nbsp;Chandler Hageman&nbsp;and&nbsp;Rhiannon Nez&nbsp;tied with 36 total blocks. Chadron State volleyball set for matches Saturday in Durango

Alliance High School Senior Payten Gibson will continue her athletic career at the college level next fall.&nbsp; Payten signed a letter of intent on Thursday,&nbsp; to play softball at&nbsp; Central Community College.&nbsp;

Payten is a 4 year member of the AHS softball team and played several infield positions her freshman, sophomore and junior years.&nbsp; She concentrated on pitching her senior year.&nbsp; Alliance Coaches Carlos Palomo and Brian Johnston commended Payten for her strong work ethic through her high school career, along with continued improvement hitting and increased velocity in the pitching circle.&nbsp; Payten was recruited as both a pitcher and utility player by CCC.&nbsp;

Central Community College is located in Columbus, Nebraska and is part of a multiple campus communtiy college serving a 25 county area in central Nebraska. Besides softball, CCC offers Womens volleyball, basketball and soccer and Men's basketball, soccer and golf.&nbsp;

Payten is the daughter of Candice and Justin Gibson of Alliance.

Gibson signs with CCC for softball

(AP) Phillip Lindsay's time with his hometown Denver Broncos has ended. The Broncos agreed to remove the right-of-first-refusal tender they had placed on the fourth-year running back from the University of Colorado. That makes him an unrestricted free agent. The Broncos will no longer have the ability to match any offer sheet Lindsay signs. Lindsay topped 1,000 yards rushing in each of his first two seasons and scored a combined 16 touchdowns. But his production plummeted last season when he battled injures and finished with 502 yards rushing and just one touchdown.

&nbsp; CORALVILLE, Iowa&nbsp;- The fifth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team posted its eighth sweep in 13 matches this season with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-11 win over Iowa at XTream Arena on Wednesday night.&nbsp; The Huskers hit a season-high .356 to improve to 11-2 on the season. Nebraska had 49 kills and 13 errors and stifled Iowa (3-12) to .119 hitting with 29 kills and 17 errors. Lexi Sun&nbsp;had 14 kills and 12 digs with a pair of aces.&nbsp;Madi Kubik&nbsp;had 10 kills and hit a season-best .364, and&nbsp;Lauren Stivrins&nbsp;had eight kills on .615 hitting to go with three blocks.&nbsp;Kayla Caffey&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jazz Sweet&nbsp;both had seven kills. Sweet turned in her best match of the year, hitting .417 with seven kills and two errors on 12 swings.&nbsp; Nicklin Hames&nbsp;set the balanced attack with 37 assists, seven digs and three kills.&nbsp;Kenzie Knuckles&nbsp;had 11 digs and&nbsp;Keonilei Akana&nbsp;had 10. The Huskers had a 49-37 digs advantage.&nbsp; Courtney Buzzerio led Iowa with nine kills. The teams will meet again on Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center at 6 p.m. The match will be televised on NET and streamed on the FoxSports platform. Husker Sports Network will call the action on HSN affiliates, the Huskers app and Huskers.com.&nbsp; Set 1:&nbsp;Nebraska went out to an 8-4 lead but surrendered a 9-3 Iowa run that put the Hawkeyes up 13-11. Nebraska committed three service errors and three unforced attack errors to allow Iowa to go in front. Trailing 17-15, Nebraska got a kill from Sun and then benefited from three straight Iowa hitting errors that made it 19-17 Huskers. Kills by Sweet, Kubik and Hames made it 22-19 Big Red, and Sun tacked on a kill before Akana finished the set at 25-19 with an ace. Set 2:&nbsp;The Huskers led 7-2 after a block and kill each by Hames and Stivrins. Nebraska increased its lead to six at 15-9 after consecutive kills by Kubik and Sun. But Iowa answered with a 5-0 run to cut it to 15-14. Sun kept the Huskers in front with back-to-back kills that made it 17-14. After Iowa pulled within 17-16, Caffey terminated a kill and then combined with Sun for a block. The junior middle blocker put down yet another kill to help the Huskers back to a four-point lead, 20-16. After Iowa got back within two, the Hawkeyes committed a service error before Sweet added a kill and Sun served an ace to make it 23-18. Another kill by Sweet earned set point at 24-21 and the Huskers closed it out at 25-21. Set 3:&nbsp;Nebraska set out to finish the sweep, taking a 7-1 lead with Kubik serving a 5-0 run for the Big Red while four different Huskers registered kills early on. The Huskers continued to pour it on with kills by Caffey, Stivrins and Kubik to go up 17-6. Kubik and Stivrins teamed up for a block to make it 19-7, and Kubik and Caffey added kills down the stretch as the Huskers pulled away for a 25-11 win, their most decisive set win of the season. NU hit .429 in the third set and held Iowa to -.032 hitting.&nbsp; &nbsp;

 </figure>By: NU Athletic Communications&nbsp; CORALVILLE, Iowa&nbsp;- The fifth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team posted its eighth sweep in 13 matches this season with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-11 win over Iowa at XTream Arena on Wednesday night.&nbsp; The Huskers hit a season-high .356 to improve to 11-2 on the season. Nebraska had 49 kills and 13 errors and stifled Iowa (3-12) to .119 hitting with 29 kills and 17 errors. Lexi Sun&nbsp;had 14 kills and 12 digs with a pair of aces.&nbsp;Madi Kubik&nbsp;had 10 kills and hit a season-best .364, and&nbsp;Lauren Stivrins&nbsp;had eight kills on .615 hitting to go with three blocks.&nbsp;Kayla Caffey&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jazz Sweet&nbsp;both had seven kills. Sweet turned in her best match of the year, hitting .417 with seven kills and two errors on 12 swings.&nbsp; Nicklin Hames&nbsp;set the balanced attack with 37 assists, seven digs and three kills.&nbsp;Kenzie Knuckles&nbsp;had 11 digs and&nbsp;Keonilei Akana&nbsp;had 10. The Huskers had a 49-37 digs advantage.&nbsp; Courtney Buzzerio led Iowa with nine kills. The teams will meet again on Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center at 6 p.m. The match will be televised on NET and streamed on the FoxSports platform. Husker Sports Network will call the action on HSN affiliates, the Huskers app and Huskers.com.&nbsp; Set 1:&nbsp;Nebraska went out to an 8-4 lead but surrendered a 9-3 Iowa run that put the Hawkeyes up 13-11. Nebraska committed three service errors and three unforced attack errors to allow Iowa to go in front. Trailing 17-15, Nebraska got a kill from Sun and then benefited from three straight Iowa hitting errors that made it 19-17 Huskers. Kills by Sweet, Kubik and Hames made it 22-19 Big Red, and Sun tacked on a kill before Akana finished the set at 25-19 with an ace. Set 2:&nbsp;The Huskers led 7-2 after a block and kill each by Hames and Stivrins. Nebraska increased its lead to six at 15-9 after consecutive kills by Kubik and Sun. But Iowa answered with a 5-0 run to cut it to 15-14. Sun kept the Huskers in front with back-to-back kills that made it 17-14. After Iowa pulled within 17-16, Caffey terminated a kill and then combined with Sun for a block. The junior middle blocker put down yet another kill to help the Huskers back to a four-point lead, 20-16. After Iowa got back within two, the Hawkeyes committed a service error before Sweet added a kill and Sun served an ace to make it 23-18. Another kill by Sweet earned set point at 24-21 and the Huskers closed it out at 25-21. Set 3:&nbsp;Nebraska set out to finish the sweep, taking a 7-1 lead with Kubik serving a 5-0 run for the Big Red while four different Huskers registered kills early on. The Huskers continued to pour it on with kills by Caffey, Stivrins and Kubik to go up 17-6. Kubik and Stivrins teamed up for a block to make it 19-7, and Kubik and Caffey added kills down the stretch as the Huskers pulled away for a 25-11 win, their most decisive set win of the season. NU hit .429 in the third set and held Iowa to -.032 hitting.&nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- March 17, 2021 --&nbsp;Due to the recent blizzard creating field conditions deemed unplayable, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball series scheduled for this weekend at CSC Softball Field, against Regis University, has been postponed. The doubleheaders will be set for a makeup date of May 7-8. Those are the final two dates on which games may be made up, per the RMAC guidelines. The league's postseason tournament was adjusted this year to allow a weekend of makeup games. The championship tournament will now be played May 13-15 at the home field of the top seeded team.&nbsp;&nbsp;
