CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians are changing their name after 105 years.

Citing three people familiar with the decision, The New York Times reported Sunday night that the team is moving away from a name considered racist for decades. The Indians have been internally discussing a potential name change for months.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press the franchise has no immediate comment on the report.

The Times said the team could make a formal announcement later this week. It’s not known when the name change will take effect or if the team has settled on a new moniker.

Cleveland’s move away from Indians follows a similar decision earlier this year by the NFL’s Washington Football Team, which was previously known as the Redskins.

For years, Native American groups and others have protested against Cleveland’s use of Indians as its name as well as other imagery used by the American League charter franchise founded in 1901. Last year, the team removed the contentious Chief Wahoo logo from its caps and jerseys, but the smiling, cartoonish mascot has remained popular and merchandise is still sold bearing its image.

The Indians have dealt with a backlash from fans upset over Chief Wahoo’s removal and the club is certain to hear more with the decision to change its name.

“Oh no! What is going on?” President Donald Trump tweeted. “This is not good news, even for ”Indians”. Cancel culture at work!”

In July, just hours after Washington’s plans became known after being pressured by several sponsors, including FedEx which holds naming rights to the football’s team’s stadium, Cleveland owner Paul Dolan released a statement saying the team would review “the best path forward with our team name.”

In the months since, the team has consulted players, front office members, coaching staff, community leaders, share holders and Native American groups.

A few days after Dolan’s statement, Indians manager Terry Francona said it was time to “move forward” with the name change.

“I’ve been thinking about it and been thinking about it before we put out that statement,” said Francona, who has been with the club since 2013. “I know in the past, when I’ve been asked about, whether it’s our name or the Chief Wahoo, I think I would usually answer and say I know that we’re never trying to be disrespectful.

“And I still feel that way. But I don’t think that’s a good enough answer today. I think it’s time to move forward. It’s a very difficult subject. It’s also delicate.”

&nbsp;The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team held Chadron State to 21.4 percent from the field while defeating the Eagles 78-28, Saturday night in the Chicoine Center. The contest was the season opener for CSC, after five previous contests had been postponed. The loss drops their record to 0-1 overall and in the conference. The Mavericks improve to 3-1 overall and in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. "It was good to finally play," Head Coach&nbsp;Janet Raymer&nbsp;said. "We have a lot of work to do, but we stuck together and played hard." The Eagles shot 33.3 % in the first period, but never surpassed that mark in the other three quarters. CSC was 27.3 percent from the field in the second quarter, and 12.5 percent and 14.3 percent in the third and final period, respectively. As a team, the Mavericks shot 38 percent (27-71) and hit 12 of their 31 three point attempts for 38.7 percent. Chadron State made 12 of its 56 field goal attempts and were one of 14 (7.1 percent) from behind the arc. Compared to Colorado Mesa, who finished 12-14 (85.7 percent) from the charity stripe, Chadron State only converted three of their seven attempts for 42.9 percent. The Mavericks outrebound CSC 50 to 39 in the victory. Chadron State had 24 turnovers in the loss, which resulted in 30 points for the Mavericks. CSC scored five points off 11 Colorado Mesa turnovers. Kylyn Rigsby led both teams with 18 points. Three other players scored in double-digits for the Mavericks. Kelsey Siemons had 17 points, while Daniella Turner and Natalie Bartle scored 16 and 11, respectively. Taryn Foxen&nbsp;led Chadron State with 16 points.&nbsp;Jori Peters&nbsp;for CSC and Turner for the Mavericks had a game high nine rebounds. &nbsp;A wild ride ensued when the Chadron State College men's basketball team took the court on Saturday evening in Chadron, with 50 total minutes of basketball in a 77-68 double-overtime win by No. 22 Colorado Mesa University. "We're still a work in progress," said Head Men's Basketball Coach&nbsp;Shane Paben. "We're far away from where we want to be, and right now we're still just working on setting expectations. I've never had a situation before with as few returners on the roster and the staff, so we're going through that. We're looking to set the bar high, like going to NCAA tournaments, and it's going to take some time." There were 14 lead changes and seven ties in the game, and the two teams combined to turn the ball over 48 times. It was never more than a one possession game through the first 12 minutes of regulation, until back-to-back threes by CSC's&nbsp;Teddy Parham, Jr., and&nbsp;Brady Delimont&nbsp;put the team up by seven. Another by&nbsp;Psalm Maduakor, with 2:07 showing in the first half, gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the game at 31-23. CSC went into halftime up 33-28. In the second half, the Eagles started 4-of-22 from the field, allowing the Mavericks to turn a five-point deficit in to a seven-point lead over the course of 13 minutes. CSC point guard&nbsp;Marcus Jefferson&nbsp;stepped up in a big way during the final five minutes of regulation. Driving into traffic again and again, he landed four layups in the team's final nine possessions, including the tying score with 10 seconds remaining, and also assisted on a Delimont three. The next five minutes saw the Mavericks take a five-point lead, but slowly and deliberately the Eagles offense took control of the final two minutes of the first overtime. Parham launched a three-pointer with 52 seconds left, and the Eagles forced a turnover. A potential game-winner from Parham missed its mark at the buzzer. CSC was held to one of six field goals in the final period, and turned the ball over six times in a frenzied comeback attempt, while Mesa hit six of its eight free throw attempts to put them ahead for good. Mesa big man Ethan Menzies was the game's leading scorer and rebounder, dropping 22 points and grabbing eight caroms. Mac Riniker followed with 16 points and five boards, with Reece Johnson adding 12 points and five rebounds. Georgie Dancer was the other Mavericks player in double-digit scoring, with 10 points. For the Eagles,&nbsp;Deion Rhea&nbsp;and&nbsp;Marcus Jefferson&nbsp;combined for nearly half the scoring. Chadron State upset bid of #22 Colorado Mesa falls short in double OT

Creighton shot 52 percent from the field, including 61 percent in the second half, and turned a season-high 25 Nebraska turnovers into 38 points. CHADRON, Neb. -- December 11, 2020 --&nbsp;The men's basketball program at Chadron State College got off to a great start on Friday evening at the Chicoine Center in Chadron. The Eagles shot consistently near 40 percent from three-point range and over 50 percent from inside to come back from down seven with nine minutes to play, winning 66-60 over Westminster College on opening night. In only 19 minutes, junior forward&nbsp;Jacob Jefferson&nbsp;shot 8-of-10 from the field, and 2-for-4 from the three-point arc, to take top honors for the night in scoring with 18 points. Three others - senior&nbsp;Brady Delimont, and juniors&nbsp;Marcus Jefferson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Teddy Parham, Jr.&nbsp;- also finished in double digits with 11 apiece. CSC's shot selection put them over the top in the game. Though the Griffins had two more total attempts from the floor, and two more makes, the Eagles' 11 to 3 three-pointer advantage on the outside made up more than the difference in the game. The contest was never in the bag for the Eagles, however. Westminster hit the first three field goals of the game to go up 6-0. After that, CSC hit four of its next five shots&nbsp;from close range, and junior&nbsp;Kayden Sund&nbsp;gave the team its first lead with his only three-pointer of the game at 14:39, putting Chadron State ahead 11-9. CSC led by as many as eight, which was the biggest lead by either side, when&nbsp;KJ Harris&nbsp;sank a trey with 4:22 remaining in the first half to make it 28-20. Jacob Jefferson&nbsp;punctuated the first half with the final basket, from inside the paint, giving the Eagles a 34-30 halftime lead. In the second half, Westminster took control early and held onto a lead for around 16 minutes. The peak of the Griffins' authority came at 11:02 in the second half on a Ryan Bell slam dunk, putting them up 47-40 with 11 minutes left in the game. Nevertheless, CSC chipped away at the Westminster lead, starting at around the nine-minute mark, when it began a 16-4 run. That spree included a 4-of-7 streak from three-point range, with Delimont, Harris, and both Jeffersons contributing. Delimont put the Eagles ahead for good with a pair of free throws. Delimont led the Eagles at the line with 5-for-6 shooting. Chadron State will finally begin the men's college basketball season tonight.&nbsp; The Eagles will tip-off against Westminster College from Salt Lake City, UT in an RMAC contest at 6:00 in the Chicoine Center.

Because of the pandemic, CSC's first four RMAC games were postponed and all non-conference games were never played.&nbsp; Two of those games have been re-scheduled for early January.

The Eagles are under new direction this season with Head Coach Shane Paben taking over for Houston Reed, who left shortly after last season to become an assistant at the University of Northern Colorado.&nbsp; CSC was 22-88 in Reed's four seasons.

Paben's roster will look drastically different than what Eagle fans saw a year ago.&nbsp; A dozen players are gone including three key seniors that saw their eligibility expire.&nbsp; 

Five players are back including sharpshooter Brady Delimont returning for his senior year, as does his redshirt-freshman brother Gage.&nbsp; Sophomore guard Andre Sepeda showed electric flashes with the ball last season and he'll have a dangerous weapon with flexible scoring big man Jacob Jefferson returning for his redshirt-junior year.

It remains to be seen which newcomers will emerge as the biggest impact-makers early on since the Eagles haven't played a game yet.&nbsp; MSU-Denver transfer Marcus Jefferson should fill one of those spots at guard, and Santa Monica College transfer Teddy Parham Jr was a two-year starter that can shoot the three well.&nbsp; Deion Rhea, a 6'7" forward from Houston, comes in from New Mexico Junior College and is projected as a big, versatile defender that averaged nearly 10 points and eight rebounds last year.

Westminster is off to a 2-0 start despite having to replace all five starters from a year ago.&nbsp; The Griffins won't have Jai Jai Ely to count on tonight for a career-best performance against CSC - last year he dropped 32 points and hit all seven three-point attempts in the Griffins 82-73 win - a loss that sent CSC into a 12-game losing streak and ended the Eagles hopes of a conference tournament berth.

Casper Community College (WY) transfer guard Isaiah Banks has emerged as the early leading-scorer at 14.5 ppg and is distributing 3.5 assists a night.

The Griffins will also lean on guard Reme Torbert, a redshirt last year, who put up 16 points against BYU and 23 earlier this week against Weber State in exhibition contests against Division 1 competition.

An interesting key for tonight will be who handles the paint the best where neither team has a true center.

Fans can listen to the action tonight on 97.5 FM and the KQSK web stream on the Panhandle Post website.&nbsp; Tip off has been moved to 6:00 p.m. since the women's game was postponed due to covid-19 issues within the Westminster program.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A.J. Bouye’s six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances caps a disheartening first season in Denver for the eight-year veteran and leaves the Broncos without their top three cornerbacks.

Bouye’s suspension is the latest blow in a disappointing season rocked by an injury epidemic and the coronavirus pandemic that's snared a wide swath of players, coaches and team executives.

“It’s obviously upsetting what happened, but it’s 2020,” quarterback Drew Lock said. “I mean, you can expect anything to happen this year and that’s what we’re doing and when something does pop up, we roll with it and keep moving on.”

Bouye received the supplement in question from the same medical professional that led to Will Fuller and Bradley Roby of the Houston Texans getting suspended for six games last week, KOA NewsRadio in Denver reported. Fuller and Roby said last week they had been assured the product was safe, but it turned out to contain a substance on the league’s banned list.

“Yeah, I was disappointed for him,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said about an hour after the league suspended Bouye. “Players have to make really, really good judgments with the people they trust with their career and with their finances and obviously something went wrong with this person that he dealt with and trusted. It’s a disappointing situation for everybody.”

Fangio said the suspension didn’t catch the team off guard because Bouye informed him of the situation two weeks ago, “so we knew it might be coming, we didn’t know when. This week was earlier than we thought. ”

Bouye’s suspension cuts short a disappointing season in Denver, where he missed four games with a shoulder injury and another with a concussion, plus parts of two other games when he got hurt. He finished 2020 with just 23 tackles and seven pass breakups.

“He did have a choppy season. I think the injuries played a part in that,” Fangio said, adding Bouye was starting to play better lately “but we’ll just have to see (about his future). It was a rough season for him with the injuries interrupting his availability and play and now having to deal with the PED suspension.”

Bouye, who spent his first four seasons with the Texans, was acquired from Jacksonville in the offseason for a seventh-round pick. Including roster bonuses, he was making about $10.3 million this season and was set to earn nearly $12 million next season.

Missing the final four games of 2020 will cost Bouye $2.34 million.

The suspension would hang over Bouye into 2021 when he’d have to sit out the first two regular-season games. He would be eligible to participate in the offseason, training camp and preseason games.

Bouye’s suspension leaves the Broncos (4-8) in a precarious position at cornerback, where starter Bryce Callahan (foot) went on IR last week and must miss at least two more games and rising rookie Essang Bassey suffered a season-ending knee injury Sunday night in Kansas City.

The Broncos will turn to cornerbacks De’Vante Bausby and rookie Michael Ojemudia on Sunday at Carolina (4-8) with Kevin Tolliver Jr., Duke Dawson Jr. and&nbsp;newly re-acquired safety Will Parks&nbsp;the options in sub-packages.

Parks, who was claimed off waivers from Philadelphia this week, “will stay inside and will play either nickel, dime or safety,” Fangio said.

Given the injuries and suspension at cornerback, Parks said he was getting a crash course in the Broncos’ 2020 playbook. “Everything that I was doing last year, so my book is big so far," he said. "My notes are all over the place. Obviously, with the guys going down I’ve definitely got to prepare for every position, all of them.”

Broncos lose a top defensive back to six-game drug suspension

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Jared Vitztum scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Division II Fort Hays State shocked Kansas State 81-68 without its two veteran coaches. Caleb Hammeke added 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Tigers, who played the game as an exhibition and without coach Mark Johnson, who tested positive for COVID-19, and associate head coach Jeremy Brown, who is in quarantine as a close contact. Chadron State's entire weekend of games has been postponed.&nbsp; The Eagle women's staff learned early Friday morning that it would not be traveling to Gunnison to face Western Colorado Saturday night due to Covid-19.

While working to salvage as much of the weekend as possible, Chadron State had agreed in principal to reinstate the Fort Lewis game for Sunday afternoon after the original Friday night game was postponed, however the news Friday morning means CSC will not face either FLC or WCU this weekend after all.

Chadron State's second weekend of conference games has hit another rocky start.

Rather than hit the highway for the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the Eagles were among the teams impacted by COVID-19 testing issues Thursday, which is the normal travel day for Friday-Saturday doubleheaders in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

CSC's men's basketball games at Fort Lewis Friday and at Western Colorado Saturday have both been postponed due to COVID-19. No make-up dates have been announced.

The Eagle women were still planning to travel Thursday to face both FLC and Western as scheduled, but delays in getting test results returned in time to depart Chadron for the 12-hour drive to Durango prevented the team from being able to leave.

So, Friday's women's game at Fort Lewis has been postponed, however CSC plans to head straight to Gunnison Friday instead to face WCU on Saturday evening as scheduled at 5:00.

Men's games for Black Hills State at Western and FLC this weekend were also canceled.

With a newly-created open date, Western announced Thursday afternoon that it was replacing Chadron State on its men's schedule Saturday night with Fort Lewis as the schools have agreed to play a "non-conference" game in Durango at 6:00 p.m.

CSC's four pre-Thanksgiving weekend games had previously been postponed and are now January 3 &amp; 4.&nbsp;
