Morrill County - The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is seeking public assistance in the shooting of a juvenile bald eagle that was located in Morrill County.

According to a social media post by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the juvenile bald eagle was found near County Road 81, approximately 1/4 mile south of Highway 26.

According to Chadron Police Department, the missing person has been located and he is safe.

During the morning hours of January 16, 2025, the Chadron Police Department took a report that 28-year-old, Blaine Murphy took off walking near the 1200 block of West Highway 20. The report indicated Murphy may be having some mental difficulties. Officers began searching for Murphy, but were not able to locate him in the area or around the Chadron community. Later in the afternoon, Murphy was reported as missing by the reporting party.

As of this time, Murphy has still not been located. Murphy is reported to be 6 foot 4 inches tall, slender build, with blonde hair. He was last seen wearing a Gray Beanie, Gray Jacket and jeans. He may have his dog with him, which is a black and Gray blue healer mix.

We are asking for anyone who may have seen Murphy in the last 24-hours to call the Chadron Police Department and provide details of the sighting. Also, if anyone has any information as to where Murphy may be or where he may be headed to contact the Chadron Police Department at 308-432-0510. It is not known what state of mind Murphy may be in due to the reported mental difficulties, so if he is seen, please contact your local law enforcement agency for assistance.

The first Alliance Arts Council event of 2025 will be a performance by musician Joey Gulizia entitled “An Evening with Joey G” on Friday January 24th.   Gulizia will also be working as an artist in the elementary schools the week of January 20-24.

Gulizia is a multi instrument artist performing familiar tunes with a tropical twist.  Joey is a native of Omaha, NE where he has played music professionally since the age of ten.  Mainly playing percussion and woodwinds, he can be found in many musical situations and environments.  Joey has performed concerts in all 50 of the United States, many countries in Europe and also Japan.  While performing on over 30 cruises, he has gained first hand knowledge of the music from many cultures.

Joey has been a featured artist with the Omaha Symphony, Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Nebraska Brass and countless other musical groups including his own.  Joey tours with Mannheim Steamroller.

Mr. Gulizia will be conducting an in-school residency in Alliance 4th grade classrooms the week of January 20-24.  These 4th grade students will have an opportunity to join Gulizia on stage for a portion of the Friday night event to showcase what they have learned during the week. Gulizia will then go on to present his solo performance.

Business co-presenters for the school residency and the public performance are FNIC, FNBO, Harris Sales, Western Nebraska Real Estate and KCOW/Double Q Country Radio.  The programs are presented with the support of the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

The Nebraska Legislature is back in session. Lots of new faces and new committee chairs. A few major changes in state law are taking effect this year because of actions taken by previous legislators or by ballot initiatives.

Effective January 1, minimum wage in Nebraska has gone up to $13.50 per hour. Next January it will be $15.00; after that it will be increased on January 1 every year by the increase in the cost of living as of the August Consumer Price Index. Overtime above 40 hours per week will continue to be paid at 1.5 times the hourly wage.

There are some exceptions to the $13.50 wage rate. Employees who rely on tips, like wait staff in restaurants, continue to have a minimum wage of $2.13 an hour. However, the total of the wages earned and the tips or gratuities received must be greater than minimum wage. If not, the employer must make up the difference. Student learners in a training program need only be paid 75% of minimum wage while the program lasts.

The Nebraska Data Privacy Act also took effect January 1. This law allows individuals to control how their personal data is collected and used by businesses. Consumers can confirm if their data is being processed, request a copy of their data, and ask for inaccuracies to be corrected.&nbsp;They can also opt out of having their data used for targeted advertising, sold, or used for profiling. Businesses must obtain consent before collecting or using sensitive data, which includes data about a person's race, ethnicity, religion, health, sexual orientation, and more.&nbsp;Businesses must also provide consumers with ways to opt out of the sale of their data and its use for targeted advertising or profiling. However, consumers must initiate any opt-out actions. Read those privacy notices!

As of 2025, Nebraska law states that&nbsp;residents will no longer pay state income tax on their Social Security benefits, meaning there is a complete phase-out of Social Security tax on the state level in Nebraska starting January 1, 2025. Remember that when you file your NE income tax, that Social Security amount is from 2024.

Nebraska voters in November provided for some other changes in law: abortion restrictions, medical marijuana, and sick leave.

Abortion is prohibited after 12 weeks of pregnancy, which is counted from the first day of the last menstrual period. There are some exceptions to the ban: rape, incest, and a medical emergency means the pregnant person's life is in danger.

Medical marijuana or cannabis up to 5 ounces will be available if a medical practitioner writes a recommendation or prescription. But first a Medical Cannabis Commission must be established to write rules and regulations (similar to the Liquor Control Commission). The deadline for the cannabis regulations is July 1, 2025. Licensing of distributors must begin by October 1, 2025.

October 1, 2025 is also the date when new sick leave requirements take effect. Private employers must provide paid sick leave for employees. This includes employees who have to stay home to care for a sick family member.

Getting Ahead: Changes in Nebraska Law

Food safety is in the news! Numerous food borne illnesses have occurred during the last few years. Most of the reported food borne illness outbreaks have occurred from food eaten away from home. ServSafe programs are developed by the National Restaurant Association to address the growing food safety concerns of consumers. In Nebraska, the program is being implemented in cooperation with the Agriculture and Health Departments, the Nebraska Restaurant Association and Nebraska Extension.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ServSafe Food Handler program is designed for kitchen employees including but not limited to cooks, dish machine operators, shipment receivers and employees who handle and prepare food in restaurants and other food service establishments. The training provides information on food safety; personal hygiene; using thermometers; preparation, cooking, serving, receiving and storing food safely; and cleaning and sanitizing.

ServSafe Manager Course is designed for restaurant owners and managers, food service handlers, dieticians and dietary managers. The training provides information on sanitation regulations and standards, training employees in sanitation, safe food handling, food microbiology, contamination, food borne illness and setting up a food safety system.

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Chadron State maintained a slim lead for nearly the entire game, iced the game at the free throw line and held off Adams State on the Grizzlies' home floor, coming away with a 91-86 road win on Thursday evening, the first time the Eagles have won in Alamosa since 2009. 

Chadron State, which leads the RMAC with a .786 team free-throw shooting percentage, put those skills on display to clinch the victory. The Eagles finished 21-for-22 from the free throw line as a team, including 15-for-16 in the second half. 

Jalen Thomas scored 22 points to lead the Eagles, shooting 7 of 11 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Zy Wright tallied 18 points and eight rebounds to co-headline on a night where five Eagles scored in double figures. 

Julio Phipps (13 points), Dalton Petersen (12) and Trey Ballard (10) also had double-digit scoring nights, and those five players combined to go 20-for-20 from the line in Thursday's game. 

The win improves Chadron State to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the RMAC. It also snapped a slight three-game losing streak, all of which came against teams in the top five of the conference standings (Colorado School of Mines, Regis and UCCS). Adams State fell to 6-9 overall and 1-6 in RMAC play.

The Eagles stormed out of the gate early in the first half, with Jalen Thomas recording steals and fastbreak layups on the first two possessions of the contest. Chadron State eventually led 10-2 after back-to-back baskets from Julio Phipps and led by as many as 13 points at 18-5, leading to an early ASU timeout. 

The Grizzlies chipped away, cutting the lead to as little as one point with four minutes left in the first half at 35-34. Chadron State eventually went into halftime with a four-point lead at 45-41. 

The second half was marked by Chadron State being unable to pull away from the Grizzlies. The Eagles led by no more than eight points through the early part of the second half, and although the Grizzlies cut the lead to one point on three different occasions, the home team couldn't tie or take the lead until just under eight minutes to play, when a 4-0 run by ASU gave them a 68-66 advantage and their first lead of the night.

Chadron State was able to respond. Thomas hit two free throws to tie the score at 68 before Trey Ballard hit a jumper, Zy Wright hit a three that featured an ankle-breaking crossover and Julio Phipps nailed a three-point play to put the Eagles back up 76-70. 

The Eagles were automatic from the free throw line, scoring 10 of their last 12 points from the stripe and not missing over the game's final eight minutes. 

Chadron State finished 46.4 percent from the field, 27 percent from three (6-22) and 95.5 percent from the line with its 21-for-22 mark. Dalton Petersen hit three of CSC's six three-pointers. 

The Grizzlies were 41.8 percent from the field, also 27 percent from three (9-33) and just 70 percent from the line (21-30). ASU also had five players in double figures, led by Wyatt Helming's 24.

The Eagles outscored Adams State in bench points (23-17), fastbreak points (33-17), and points in the paint (40-36). CSC managed to win despite only five assists and no blocks.

After a day off, CSC plays next against New Mexico Highlands (7-8 overall, 0-7 RMAC) on the road Saturday at 3 p.m. NMHU lost 71-56 to Black Hills State on Thursday night.

CHADRON, Neb. – The Chadron State women's basketball team scored on its first three possessions and were neck-and-neck with Adams State for much of the first half, but the Grizzlies slowly pulled away for an 82-59 victory in an RMAC game in Alamosa, Colorado Thursday night.

Veterans Ashayla Powers and Kylie Krise recorded 14 points apiece to lead the Eagles. Krise was CSC's leading rebounder with eight while Megan Counts grabbed six in the loss. The win improved Adams State's record to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in the RMAC. The Eagles are now 2-11 and 1-6.

Chadron State took an early 6-0 lead, were behind by only two points (19-17) at the end of the first quarter and trailed by just three points (33-30) with three minutes left in the first half. But the Grizzlies eventually led by a 42-32 margin at halftime and tallied the first nine points of the second half while building their advantage to 60-40 in the third period.

The third quarter was the Eagles' downfall. They were outscored 18-8 in the frame, when they shot just 2-for-15 from the field, including going 0-for-5 from 3-point land.  

Taejhuan Hill, a 6-foot freshman, led Adams State with 21 points and 10 rebounds for game-high honors in both categories.  Kiiyani Anitielu, a 5-7 junior, and Angeline Nageak, a 5-5 senior, added 17 and 15 points, respectively, for the Grizzlies.  

The 82 points scored by Adams State is a season-high for ASU. The Grizzlies shot 45 percent (30-66) from the field, including 9-of-19 three-point attempts, and cashed in on 13 of 14 free throws. The Eagles hit 36.5 percent (23-63) from the field, including 7 of 19 from behind the arc, and were 6 of 7 on their foul shots. 

Some of the other statistics were lopsided. Chadron State outrebounded the Grizzlies 44-27, but Adams State was credited with 17 steals and the Eagles finished with 28 turnovers, double the home team's total.

The Eagles will play at New Mexico Highlands on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Cowgirls, now 6-7 for the season, defeated Black Hills State 77-63 Thursday night. It was the Cowgirls' first win over Black Hills State in 17 games and the first RMAC loss of the season for BHSU.

•&nbsp;Kaitlyn Hord&nbsp;owns a league-leading nine blocks through eight sets, while also pacing the PVF in 1.13 blocks per set.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

• Mostly due to her franchise-record 31 digs in the season opener, libero&nbsp;Camila Gómez&nbsp;leads the league in digs (43) and digs per set (5.38) through eight sets.&nbsp;That's&nbsp;two digs ahead of 2024 PVF Libero of the Year Morgan Hentz.&nbsp;

• Olympian setter&nbsp;Natalia Valentín-Anderson&nbsp;leads the league in kill percentage at .583 with seven kills and one error on 12 attacks. The Puerto Rican is a master of the setter dump as shown by being second in hitting percentage at .500. Plus, her 90 assists and 11.25 per set sits third in the league. That&nbsp;assist&nbsp;total is only five behind league leader and Vegas setter Alisha Glass Childress, who set a PVF record with 72 helpers in the reverse sweep victory over Grand Rapids.&nbsp;

Record Rumble:&nbsp;A pair of franchise records fell in the opening weekend for the Supernovas, who saw two newcomers sketch their names in the record book.&nbsp;Newly signed&nbsp;libero&nbsp;Camila Gómez&nbsp;broke a single-match record for digs, posting 31 digs (6.20 D/S), plus five assists in the thrilling five-set win over Atlanta. That number is also the second-highest total in league history.&nbsp;Kaitlyn Hord&nbsp;balled out in her Supernovas debut, recording seven blocks, which broke the&nbsp;previoussingle-match record of six.&nbsp;

OMAHA, Nebraska (Jan. 16, 2025)&nbsp;– The Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF), the largest professional women’s volleyball league in the United States, and the Omaha Supernovas, Nebraska’s leading professional indoor volleyball team, announced today that following the 2025 season the Supernovas will conclude their participation in the PVF. There are no changes to the team’s 2025 season schedule, ticketing, or fan experience.&nbsp;

The Supernovas will be a founding partner of a new indoor volleyball league starting in January of 2026. The Supernovas will continue to play their home games at CHI Health Center in Omaha and remain Nebraska’s professional volleyball team, ensuring the same world-class competition and hometown pride that fans have come to love.&nbsp;

The Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF) will enter its third season in 2026 featuring teams including the Atlanta Vibe, Columbus Fury, Grand Rapids Rise, Indy Ignite, Orlando Valkyries, San Diego Mojo, and Vegas Thrill and media partners including CBS Sports, Fox Sports and Roku. Omaha Supernovas to move on from the Pro Volleyball Federation following 2025 season

CHADRON, Neb. –  While playing her 100th college game last Saturday, Chadron State senior Ashayla Powers made program history to become Eagle women's basketball's all-time rebounding leader. 

Powers grabbed a team-high seven rebounds against Regis on Saturday, giving her 615 for her career and slipping her past two all-time greats from Sheridan County. 

Shauna Smith of Gordon, Nebraska and Lorna Dahlgren of Hay Springs, Nebraska each pulled down 614 rebounds to share top place on the CSC chart while they were starring for the Eagles in the early 1990s. Smith concluded her career in 1994 and Dahlgren graduated the following year. Now fourth on the Eagles' career rebounding list is Tanya Weber, a native of Douglas, Wyoming who had 605 when she graduated in 1998. 

Powers, a fifth-year senior from Longmont, Colorado, has grabbed 187 offensive rebounds and 428 defensive rebounds across her career to reach the magic number of 615. She has averaged six or more rebounds per contest in each of the past four seasons. Powers was a First Team All-RMAC choice in 2022-23 and was a second-team selection last year. 

Through 12 games this season, Powers has scored 148 points and grabbed 81 rebounds, an average of 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. During her career, Powers has averaged 13.4 points and 6.2 rebounds across her 100 games played. Powers has shot 49.7 percent (492-990) from the field and 73.5 percent (331-450) from the free throw line since joining the Eagles in the fall of 2020. 

Now that Powers has the program rebounding crown, she will now try to move up the Eagles' scoring lists. Powers has moved into fifth place on the CSC women's scoring chart with 1,344 career points.  

Those above her are Tricia Lukawski with 1,869, Dahlgren with 1,527, Mary Perrien with 1,493 and Gwen Reed with 1,492. Smith, who tallied 1,215 points during her career, was among those who Powers moved past on the scoring chart this season. 

Powers and the CSC women's basketball team are on the road this upcoming weekend, facing Adams State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and New Mexico Highlands on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Eagles will return home to face Westminster on Thursday, January 23 at 5 p.m. in the Chicoine Center, where Powers will be recognized.
