LINCOLN, Neb. – From Auburn to Alliance, Nebraska’s beginner-friendly lakes stretch form border to border.

These lakes have been designated by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission as family friendly because they are safe, comfortable and have great fish-catching potential. They include a combination of barrier-free fishing access, fishing trails, groomed parks, concessions, playgrounds, picnic areas, and maintained fish populations.

The following are 10 of the best examples of lakes for beginners and families to enjoy for a day of fishing. Most will have bass, bluegill and catfish, with rainbow trout seasonally stocked. Go for the fishing, stay for the other local activities.

•&nbsp;Optimist Lake&nbsp;in Auburn has a walking trail around the lake and a nearby playground, campground and ballpark. Trout are stocked in October and March. Fall City, Nebraska City and Humboldt are other area towns with similar ponds.

•&nbsp;Holmes Lake&nbsp;in Lincoln is a fishing family’s dream, with lots of fish, hiking trails, playgrounds and local services. It includes crappie and bluegill that are large enough to consider keeping for a dinner of fish filets. It also includes trophy bass and channel catfish. Areas of the dam and central part of the lake shoreline is sand; great for the kids to play in while waiting for the seasonally stocked trout to bite.

•&nbsp;Ponca State Park&nbsp;has a 1-acre pond with a boardwalk to fish from and mowed grass shorelines. Fishing rods and reels can be checked out at the visitor center to catch trout and panfish. Consider spending a weekend in the cabins or campgrounds and visiting the Lewis and Clark Museum displays while you are there.

•&nbsp;Two Rivers State Recreation Area Lake No. 5&nbsp;requires a fee to fish for rainbow trout. The lake has high numbers of fish for a great catching opportunity. Enjoy fishing from mowed shorelines and a handicapped accessible dock. Two Rivers has unique railroad cabooses turned into cabins that can be rented for your park stay.

• Yanney Park in Kearney includes a beautiful&nbsp;Yanney Lake, which is ringed by a hiking and biking trail that winds its way to Fort Kearny State Recreation Area Lake No. 6. Both of these lakes offer October and March trout stocking and great bass and panfish catching opportunity.

•&nbsp;Victoria Springs State Recreation Area&nbsp;is the third oldest area in Nebraska’s state park system and will be part of Game and Parks’ centennial celebration this summer. The Victoria Springs pond is a scenic setting for a day of fishing and relaxation. Nearby Broken Bow includes all of the services needed and is home to Melham Park Pond, another great beginner-friendly lake.

•&nbsp;Birdwood Wildlife Management Area Lake&nbsp;near North Platte is one of dozens of small lakes along Interstate 80 that was created by the digging of soil used in the interstate’s construction. Recent improvements make this lake more angler friendly, featuring fishing docks over clear water that has great panfish and seasonal trout fishing.

•&nbsp;Lake Ogallala&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lake McConaughy&nbsp;offer opportunity for a day-trip or weekend getaway that includes fishing. Trout can be caught from the shorelines or fishing docks of Lake Ogallala, or spend time on McConaughy’s sandy shores and fish for just about anything. Bring your sand toys and build a castle while you wait for a bite.

Top 10 beginner-friendly lakes across Nebraska

Chadron High School will present "Into the Woods" musical on March 19, 20 and 21.

The Friday and Saturday performances will be at 7 p.m. with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.&nbsp; Chadron High School Vocal Music/Theatre Director Wendy Mahr said her students haven't had a live performance since the pandemic began in 2020. "We're going to get to be the first one, so that's kind of fun," Mahr said. "We hope people will show up, I'm kind of a bit nervous to be honest." "Into the Woods" is a musical by Stephen Sondheim. "It's not that old of a show, it's been around since the 80's," Mahr said. "It's four different nursery rhyme stories happening at the same time. Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood all happening together in the same woods. There's giants and a witch. There's all kinds of things that happen...a whole bunch of irony and fun." Mahr told Panhandle Post it's a difficult theater production to put on. "I would never do [this] with high school kids just because of the vocal chops it takes, but I have such strong kids this year so I picked it and they're doing awesome," Mahr said. "With cast and crew I say we have 25 people. Because of COVID I wasn't sure what the restrictions were going to be...so I usually have a bigger cast. I have an assistant director that's Jeff Milburn; a wonderful singer....and a choreographer, that's Kat Rischling who was our student. We're on our eighth show together. She started working with me when she was still in high school with my summer drama programs. She's a fabulous choreographer." Chadron High School students have been working extremely hard for this production.&nbsp; "The theatrical rule is for every minute you see a production, an hour of rehearsal has occurred," Mahr said. "Because everything is copyrighted, you have seven weeks to prepare. The eighth week you have to be in production because everything that you've copyrighted has to go back to New York. I do auditions before the contract starts so that the kids know what parts they're going to prep for. Then we start the rehearsal process...in our case in Chadron we have to work around sports and all the other wonderful things because our kids are in so much. I use Cardinal Singer rehearsal time, which is before school and then we're the last thing at the end of day...usually at 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. til 9:30 p.m. or 10 p.m. They work so hard. With Jeff and Kat and I we can run three different rehearsals at the same time. " Mahr notes that the students in this production are very talented, and some have been accepted into&nbsp;prestigious colleges.&nbsp; "Chadron is statistically the strangest&nbsp;anomaly and the most wonderful thing at the same time," Mahr said. "We're so small yet...look at our graduation rate based on our stats with normal stuff, our poverty rate, etc. We just defy everything all the time, which is a just a testament to a lot things. We have kids with so much talent in so many ways. It's funny because they don't know that. I think that's one reason that makes it so great. They have no idea that they're really good because they don't have anything to compare it to. In sports you always have a defense, you see another team, in art you don't see the other teams. You don't know what other kids' musicals are like. Part of that is a blessing because they don't really have any ego, which is super great. " Chadron Senior Lateshia Ngoi has been accepted into the Julliard performing arts schools. "At this moment in her life she thinks she wants to go into music or theatre, something in the arts for sure," Mahr said. "She's self driven. She's one of those kids that any coach loves. She knew the idea of Julliard. I do think culturally there's a disconnect. She's from Canada. The wait from getting, I think it meant a lot. First of all, it was just a 'shoot the moon', they only take five kids. She says she might as well try. It's pretty darn amazing...that she went through and got in." Chadron Senior Alexis Convoy got accepted into Princeton University through the QuestBridge Scholarship.&nbsp; "Both of those girls [Convoy,&nbsp;Ngoi] are well rounded," Mahr said. "They're both&nbsp;academically, extremely strong. They both qualified for State Speech, which is really hard to do. Actually, Alexis won her district division. They are in Cardinal Singers, FBLA and all the things that our kids do. It's just amazing." Mahr said she's really excited for this musical.&nbsp; "Usually, I don't have so many seniors," Mahr said. "In Cardinal Singers I have 11 seniors out of 25. It's fun because there isn't a weak link. Like Kennedy Stack, who is a beautiful actress and singer, she's going to Kearney on a softball scholarship but is also&nbsp;auditioning for music." CHADRON – Chadron State College is closing its campus Monday, March 15, due to forecasted winter weather conditions. Residence halls will remain open and dining services will resume operations Monday.

CSC is currently on its midterm break. Since campus will be closed Monday, college officials are requesting students to not return to campus this weekend due to potentially hazardous road conditions.

The National Weather Service in Cheyenne reports a possibility of a significant winter storm that begins Friday evening and continues through Monday morning. Heavy snow, freezing rain, icy roads, and blizzard conditions may occur.

The National Weather Service predicts this storm will impact travel on roads, including Interstate 25 and Interstate 80 in western Nebraska.

Keep your pets indoors and carry an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes blankets, extra food, and water.

The City of Chadron has declared a snow emergency, effective from Sunday, March 14 at 2:00 a.m. until Monday, March, 15 10:00 a.m. and will remain in effect until further notice, or when all the snow in the streets has been removed.

 When a snow emergency has been declared all vehicles, trailers and obstructions must be removed from the designated snow emergency routes.

 Vehicles, trailers or obstructions remaining on the routes may be ticketed or towed at the owners' expense.  More information about the snow emergency routes is available on the City’s website.

The Alliance Arts Council is proud to announce a performance by guitarist Adam Gardino as the finale to their 2020-2021 season.

Adam will perform at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 1 in the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center.&nbsp;

Since 2005 Adam Gardino has been an “up and coming” fingerstyle guitarist, musician and songwriter in the Pikes Peak region. 

 His style combines the smoothness of James Taylor and the energy of Brad Paisley to deliver exciting, jaw dropping performances.  His attention to the intricacies of acoustic guitar arrangements, delivered with a voice as clear as his mountain roots continues to wow audiences today. 

At the age of 16, Adam placed in the Top Five of the International Fingerstyle Competition held in Winfield, KS.  He kept competing in the annual contest, honing his skills and stage craft, hoping to eventually squash those pre-show jitters.  Though the butterflies never flew away, in 2010 he placed 3rd behind Pete Huttlinger and Japan’s Grand Champion Akihiro Tanaka.  After graduating from the University of Colorado Denver in 2012 with a B.S. in Music Performance, he took 1st at 23 years old – among the youngest ever to win.  And most recently in 2019 he re-entered again, after the 5 year mandatory hiatus for 1st Place winners – and won for a second time! 

While working as a musician in Colorado Springs, Adam caught the eye of the legendary cowboy chuck-wagon group the Flying W Wranglers.  He joined them in 2014, and for 5 years he grew in knowledge and experience from the best country and western musicians in the business.  Highlights of his achievements include playing for the Western Music Association, the Academy of Western Artists, the annual Chuckwagons of the West Jamboree, and opening for country singer Josh Turner at the Flathead County Fair in 2018. 

You will love the friendly, easy-going demeanor Adam has on and off the stage.  Quick to break down the “invisible barrier” between performer and audience, goofy-but-true stories and jokes often accompany the high-flying stunts attempted on the fretboard.  As one critic would write, “He could play the phonebook and make it interesting.” 

 Adam will also have “Special Guests” Joe Gardino and Tony Schmid join him for a few pieces. 

&nbsp;Tickets are $10 for Adult, $9 for Seniors and $5 for Students.  Tickets can be purchased at Carnegie Arts Center and Redmans Shoes.  You can also buy tickets at the door. 

 Masks will be required and social distancing protocol will be followed.

Update: International fingerstyle guitar champion to perform in Alliance

Alliance – The City of Alliance has declared a snow emergency starting today at 5:00 p.m. until further notice. 

Residents who live on designated snow routes are asked to please have all vehicles removed from the street to ensure accessibility for the City crews and emergency personnel. &nbsp;

Due to the predicted snow totals, crews will be plowing snow on these routes multiple times.

 Per the City of Alliance Municipal Code Ordinance No. 2883, Sec.24-27, please note that it is the duty of the owner of every lot or parcel adjacent to a permanent sidewalk to clean off and remove all snow within 24hrs after snow accumulation, however, snow shall not be moved from lots, driveways, or adjacent sidewalks into the city streets, alley or neighboring lots. 

Such an offense shall be considered a misdemeanor and is punishable by a &nbsp;$100.00 fine. 

The Alliance Police Department will attempt to make contact with owners of any vehicles left parked on designated snow routes. &nbsp;Any vehicles not moved will be towed.

The City of Chadron has declared a snow emergency for Thursday,  March 11 effective from 2:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.  and will remain in effect until further notice, or when all the snow in the streets has been removed.

  When a snow emergency has been declared all vehicles, trailers and obstructions must be removed from the designated snow emergency routes. 

 Vehicles, trailers or obstructions remaining on the routes may be ticketed or towed at the owners' expense.

As per the winter storm warning, a Snow Emergency has been declared for the City of Crawford from 12:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, once accumulations reach 3 inches, through 5:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.

 In reference to City Ordinances, a snow emergency means that motor vehicles, boats, trailers etc. CANNOT be parked on the street during the indicated time period along the emergency snow routes. 

Vehicles, trailers or obstructions remaining on the routes may be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense. 

Efforts will be made to not tow vehicles during normal business hours, unless the predominate weather dictates such actions.

Box Butte Co. to hold 'Celebrate 4-H FUNdraiser'

Alliance- United Way of Western Nebraska serving Box Butte and Dawes Counties surpassed their 2020-2021 campaign goal of $90,000 by raising $93,605 exceeding the campaign goal. &nbsp;

$84,633.56 was raised in Box Butte County and $8,972.04 was raised in Dawes County. &nbsp;Funds are raised annually through individual donations, corporate donations and United Way special events.&nbsp;

United Way Director Karen Benzel highlighted how important the community is in raising funds for United Way. She noted, “We are grateful for the generous community support and helping United Way raise over $90,000 for the community. When we were setting the goal for the upcoming campaign we had no idea what to expect. Businesses and schools had been shut down, it was very difficult to set a fundraising goal as we wanted to be cognizant of the current environment due to the pandemic, but we recognized that the ongoing needs of our partners still existed and in many ways their funding needs increased due to the pandemic. We were conscientious all year long and encouraged the community to give what they could and the amazing support we received demonstrates the wonderful community we live in. Whether you participated in one of our events this past summer, donated&nbsp;through payroll deduction, on our site or via one of our promotions, we want to thank you!&nbsp;We were able to raise $93,605 for the community during a pandemic and we are appreciative of every donation to support United Way.”

Funds raised are used to support United Way community impact initiatives and local non-profits partner agencies in Box Butte and Dawes Counties.&nbsp; United Way partner agencies apply for funding each year and funding is open to non-profits that focus on financial stability, education and better health.&nbsp; Funds available are based on the amount raised in each county as Box Butte County funds are utilized for Box Butte County agencies and Dawes County funds raised are used to support Dawes County agencies.&nbsp; Last year, ten non-profits in Box Butte County and three in Dawes County received funds from United Way.&nbsp; Non-profit agencies like East Point Horspice, CAPstone, The Doves Program and Community Table rely on United Way for support.&nbsp; Current community impact initiatives include the Community Cares Food Box Program, Stuff the Bus, Imagination Library and the Box Butte County Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes. &nbsp;

The deadline for entering the annual Stars of Tomorrow contest sponsored by the Chadron Kiwanis Club is Monday, March 8. 

The contest will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 14 in the Chadron High School Auditorium.

There will be four divisions: Division I, students in kindergarten through the third grades; Division II, fourth through sixth grades; Division III, seventh through ninth grades; and Division IV, 10th through 12th grades.

The first place winner in division IV will receive $150.00 scholarship and the right to represent the Chadron Kiwanis Club at the district contest later this spring.

The top three place winners in each division will be awarded tropies.

There is no entry fee. The acts should last no more than about 6 minutes. Both soloists and small groups may compete.
