A Gering man was arrested Tuesday after an emergency lookout and pursuit.

Shortly before 7 a.m, Scottsbluff Police received a report of an auto theft, and 15 minutes later a Scotts Bluff County Deputy saw the vehicle driving on Highway 26. A pursuit of the vehicle commenced and the man driving the vehicle alone eventually fled the vehicle on foot.

Multiple law enforcement agencies searched the area, and the man was seen by a citizen running, leading to his location.&nbsp;

25-year-old Cresencio Castillo of Gering was arrested by Deputies without any further incident.

The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Minatare/Melbeta Fire Department, and Regional West Ambulance Service were all involved in incident.

During the afternoon and evening hours of Saturday, March 15, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Cheyenne County. In total, 23 businesses were checked. Three of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 87%. The businesses that failed the compliance check were:

Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to minors are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor. These projects were supported by grant #1848 from the Panhandle Prevention District/Panhandle Public Health District.

Alcohol Compliance Checks Held in Multiple Panhandle Counties

&nbsp;The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) authorizes the release of emergency haying and grazing of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres nationwide, including CRP acres in Nebraska, to livestock producers affected by the recent wildfires in Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.

“Many ranchers in Nebraska, Texas and Oklahoma impacted by the recent, devastating wildfires are in need of grazing acres and hay resources to sustain their herds while they work over the coming months to restore their operations,” said Tim Divis, Acting State Executive Director for USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Nebraska. “If you have Conservation Reserve Program acres that you are willing to donate to these livestock producers for the purpose of grazing and haying, please contact your local FSA office. Your donations are needed and greatly appreciated.”

States and counties currently affected by wildfire include:

• Oklahoma: Beaver, Dewey, Ellis, Harper, Kay, Roger Mills, Texas, Woods and Woodward

• Texas: Armstrong, Carson, Gray, Hartley, Hemphill, Hutchinson, Lipscomb, Moore, Ochiltree, Oldham, Potter, Roberts and Wheeler

Earlier this month FSA expanded authorization of emergency haying and grazing of CRP acres to support the relocation of livestock for grazing purposes. There is no fee or annual rental payment reduction assessed for emergency haying and grazing.

Emergency haying and grazing is available until the beginning of the Primary Nesting Season (PNS) in each state. Primary nesting season dates in Nebraska are May 1 through July 15. Emergency grazing can continue during the PNS with a 50% reduction in stocking rate if the county meets the Livestock Forage Disaster Program drought eligibility trigger of D2 for eight consecutive weeks or D3 or greater on the U.S. Drought Monitor.

How to Donate CRP Grazing and Haying Rights

Eligible CRP participants who want to donate CRP acres for the purpose of emergency grazing and haying must obtain a modified conservation plan, which includes emergency grazing requirements from either USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) or the participant's Technical Service Provider before the CRP acres are hayed or grazed. To ensure emergency haying or grazing of CRP acres is only being utilized by livestock producers adversely impacted by the wildfire, the livestock producer must file a CCC-576 (Notice of Loss) or provide a written certification to be included in the CRP contract file.

Haying or grazing activities are not authorized if these activities will cause long-term damage to the vegetative cover on the land as determined on a contract-by-contract basis. The CRP participant is responsible for non-compliance with the CRP contract provisions.

Due to privacy laws, FSA cannot release the names of producers willing to assist livestock producers in the fire-impact areas without their written consent. CRP participants must voluntarily disclose their willingness to assist livestock producers and consent to the disclosure of their personal information before FSA can release the information to livestock producers seeking assistance.

CRP participants who are interested in donating CRP grazing and haying privileges should contact their local USDA Service Center to confirm CRP practice eligibility and obtain approval from FSA prior to grazing or haying eligible CRP acres.

Non-Emergency Grazing and Haying of CRP Acres

As a reminder, non-emergency haying and grazing authority is also an available option for wildfire-impacted livestock producers. Non-emergency grazing and haying activities can occur according to the CRP participant’s conservation plan during drought or natural disaster conditions, but the site conditions should be taken into consideration and the plan modified, as needed. Non-emergency harvesting for hay is authorized once during the approved event and no later than Aug. 31. Participants must leave 25% of the contract acres unharvested or hayed. Non-emergency grazing must not exceed 120 days. During the PNS, there must be a 50% carrying capacity reduction. For both non-emergency grazing and haying, there will be a 25% annual rental payment reduction.

In addition to CRP emergency and non-emergency grazing and haying provisions, FSA recently announced policy flexibilities for several key disaster assistance programs to aid agricultural producers who have experienced significant livestock, feed, forage and infrastructure loss from recent wildfires. USDA authorizes program for Nebraska livestock producers

I-80 westbound from Kearney to North Platte is closed and I-80 eastbound from Big Springs to Lexington is closed.

HWY 30 remains closed at this time from the Wyoming border to Kearney in both directions. Crews are out and working to get roads clear. Strong winds have caused many snow drifts on major roadways.

Nebraska Department of Transportation announces I-80 update

LINCOLN, NE –,&nbsp;Governor Jim Pillen announced he has ordered a second deployment of members of the Nebraska National Guard and Nebraska State Patrol to Texas to help respond to the ongoing crisis along the U.S. border with Mexico.

“Every state is a border state, and what happens along our nation’s southern border affects us right here in Nebraska,” said Gov. Pillen. “We’re seeing record amounts of fentanyl and heroin flood into our communities as Mexican cartels take advantage of the disastrous border policies of the federal government. I am extremely grateful to the soldiers, airmen, and state troopers who volunteered for this important mission. Their skills will help stem the tide of illegal immigration and keep deadly drugs off our streets.”

The mission is being organized in response to a request for emergency assistance from the state of Texas.&nbsp;The request was made through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), which is an agreement among states to send personnel and resources to assist with disasters in other states.

Thirty-five personnel from the Nebraska National Guard (28 Army Guard soldiers and seven Air Guard airmen) have volunteered for the mission. They will conduct operations in the vicinity of Eagle Pass, Texas. The soldiers and airmen are scheduled to deploy in early April for a duration of 90 days. While deployed, they will be on state active-duty status in support of the Texas National Guard as part of Operation Lone Star.

“The Nebraska National Guard is always ready to respond when our fellow Americans are dealing with an emergency, whether it is here in our own backyard, in another state, or overseas,” said Major General Craig W. Strong, the Adjutant General of the Nebraska National Guard. “I am proud of our soldiers and airmen honorably serving once again in support of Operation Lone Star.” &nbsp;

Ten troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) will deploy to the El Paso area for two weeks in mid-April. All are volunteers. As in past NSP border deployments, the troopers will work alongside the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“On multiple occasions, our troopers have answered the call to support Texas DPS troopers in their mission to keep American communities safe,” said Colonel John Bolduc, NSP superintendent. “This deployment is a continuation of that support and an affirmation that when our law enforcement partners call for help, they can count on the Nebraska State Patrol.”

In December 2023, illegal border crossings into the U.S. from Mexico exceeded 300,000. That was an all-time high for a single month. The lax federal border policies responsible for the rise in illegal immigration have also resulted in increased drug trafficking. The Omaha Division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) reported an 83% increase in the number of fentanyl pills seized in 2023 compared to 2022. The DEA estimates that 2023 was the deadliest year ever for drug poisonings in the United States, with an estimated 112,000 American lives lost. Per the DEA, “70 percent of these drug poisonings are from fentanyl.” Additionally, the Omaha Police Department recently alerted local law enforcement to an uptick of drug distribution activity in Omaha -- specifically due to the increased flow of meth supplied by Mexican cartels.

Gov. Pillen Announces Second Nebraska Troop Deployment to Secure Southern Border

On Monday, Former Husker and professional basketball player Jordan Hooper announced the formation of the Hooper/Hiemstra Basketball academy for young basketball players in the Panhandle.&nbsp;

Hooper said in a Facebook post that the basketball academy will be put on by herself and Mason and Randy Hiemstra and will be known as 'H2BA.'

Hooper stresses that the Academy will work with high school Coaches in the Panhandle and will offer an old school approach to the contemporary game of the sport.&nbsp;

"We see the need and we want to give western Nebraska a product we can all be proud of," Hooper said.

The academy will be offered to boys and girls for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school, and the program will work with area high schools in the area.

Annual tractor and equipment safety training courses for youth, to be held in eight sites across Nebraska in late May and early June, now are open for registration.

The trainings are held in collaboration with Nebraska Extension and the Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (CS-CASH) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health. Although designed for 14- to 15-year-old students, the courses are open to all interested in learning more about the safe operation of tractors and equipment.

Nebraska Extension began the tractor safety course more than 50 years ago. Since 2013, when the CS-CASH and Extension partnership began, more than 1,200 young Nebraska farmers and ranchers have received safety training certification.

The training can be lifesaving. From 2001 through 2015, 48% of all fatal injuries to young, hired workers occurred in agriculture, and the leading cause of death in these young workers was tractor-related accidents.

Federal law prohibits children under 16 from using certain equipment on a farm unless their parents or legal guardians own the farm. However, certification received through this course grants an exemption to the law allowing 14- and 15-year-olds to drive a tractor and to do field work with certain mechanized equipment.

Certification is earned by completing a Hands-On Safety Day with a written test on the first day, followed by a tractor and equipment safety training course, including a driving exam, on the second day. Successful completion will result in certification for 14- and 15-year-old youth to be employed on farms and ranches.

The education team will include Aaron Yoder, PhD, UNMC associate professor and CS-CASH researcher. Dr. Yoder will be joined by CS-CASH team members Risto Rautianen, PhD, Ellen Duysen and Kelsey Irvine, and extension educators Randy Saner, Alfredo DiConstanzo, PhD, John Thomas and Ron Seymour.&nbsp;

Day 1 of the course will cover the required elements of the National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program, including quizzes that students must pass to attend the driving portion of the training. Day 2 will include a driving test, equipment operation and ATV safety lessons. Students must demonstrate competence in hitching and unhitching equipment and driving a tractor and trailer through a standardized course. The two-day course will include lessons on emergency first aid, personal protective equipment use, ATV/UTV safety and livestock handling.

The course costs $40 and includes educational materials, lunch on both days and supplies. Youth under 14 can register for and attend Certification Day 1 if accompanied by an adult. They cannot drive equipment, attend Day 2 or become certified. Students under 14 must still register but will not be charged the registration fee.

Those attending a location that only offers Day 2 (Gering, Hastings and O’Neill) must complete Certification Day 1 at another location or complete a virtual module. Certification Day 1 (or online module)&nbsp;must&nbsp;be completed, passing the written exam, before attending Certification Day 2.

Our new head softball coach is Heston Williams.&nbsp; Heston is graduating from Mount Marty University in Yankton, South Dakota this spring.&nbsp; Heston is a member of the baseball team at Mount Marty.&nbsp; Coach Williams will teach PE at Alliance High School.&nbsp; His wife Andi will be a fifth grade teacher at Grandview Elementary.

Our new head volleyball coach is Tabitha Unzicker. Tabitha is a 2014 graduate of Alliance High School and the University of Nebraska Kearney.&nbsp; She also earned a master's degree from Black Hills State.&nbsp; Tabitha began her coaching career as the head volleyball coach of the Bayard Tigers.&nbsp; In four years, she has a record of 71-51 and led Bayard to its first state tournament appearance in 30 years in 2022 with a record of 31-2.&nbsp; Tabitha served as an assistant coach in the Western Nebraska All star volleyball game in 2023.&nbsp; Tabitha teaches special education at Emerson Elementary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Our new girls basketball coach is Mickenzie Brennan.&nbsp; Mickenzie is a 2015 graduate of Alliance High School and Chadron State.&nbsp; She fought through numerous injuries while playing basketball for AHS and went on to play college basketball at Mid Plains Community College and Chadron State.&nbsp; Mickenzie began her career as a teacher and coach at Hyannis High School.&nbsp; She most recently coached for Alliance Middle School and has served as an assistant coach for Alliance High School.

Our new boys basketball coach is Jordan Mills.&nbsp; Jordan is a 2015 graduate of Alliance High School and Chadron State.&nbsp; Jordan was a standout player for the Bulldogs.&nbsp; He played college basketball for Mid Plains Community College and Chadron State.&nbsp; Jordan has taught elementary PE in Rapid City and was a freshmen coach and varsity assistant coach at Rapid City Central.&nbsp; Jordan will teach at Alliance High School.&nbsp; His wife Samantha is also a graduate of Alliance High School.&nbsp; They are excited to move back to Alliance.

Keep America Beautiful Conference: Affiliate Proven Practice

Memories of Keep America Beautiful conferences run on parallel tracks. One train carries experiences outside the convention center and hotel meeting rooms: the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, the Lincoln Memorial at sunrise in Washington, D.C., and, most recently, surfers riding the ocean waves at San Diego. Another train pulls cars filled with takeaways unique to that trip from fellow affiliates and speakers.

Day two during this year’s conference in San Diego brought the popular “Affiliate Proven Practice” session, formerly known as “Steal This” since attendees often filed away what might work to try in their communities. Offhand, I do not recall how many of the presentations have been retooled at Keep Alliance Beautiful. The majority were not applicable to us, yet it is entertaining to see how others respond to situations and opportunities that fall into the purview of a Keep America Beautiful affiliate.

The first speaker made me think of what we could do at something like Bands on the Bricks. Tracey from Virginia played a video showing an eco-friendly music festival. “Jam Packed” was a huge party in Richmond, she said. “Everything we do on that island has to be as green as possible. This was zero waste. We looked where every part could be green and sustainable – no water bottles.” Vendors had compostable containers and the free water from Ball was in aluminum cans. A $40,000 donation followed the successful event. Hmmm, sounds doable here if everyone involved would play ball.

My favorite idea involved animals. Jonathan from Keep Charlotte (N.C.) Beautiful talked about “Pick Up With Pups”. I miss our dog, who died last fall, and would love an opportunity to walk a dog and gather litter at the same time. Jonathan explained that he likes to collaborate and did not have to pay for a thing as he networked with city, county and others to host the activity on their 50th anniversary during June 2022. Volunteers check out dogs from the animal control center for cleanups twice a year. Two hundred volunteers have picked up 3,000 pounds of litter. “(It) gives dogs who can attend a new walk with a friend and may lead to a forever home,” he said. Two of the employees at our recycling center would be the right fit to organize a pooch and person program in Alliance.

Spring officially arrived about a week ago. Concerts and cleanups are on KAB’s radar as we near The Great American Cleanup and prepare for annual events such as Heritage Days. Daniel from Keep Suffolk Beautiful highlighted an event that his affiliate promotes and takes part in, which I could see Alliance embracing. They brought back the Suffolk Earth and Arts Festival, which ran 2016-19, in 2022. Last year there were 90 vendors and 6,000 guests. “We’re using (this) event to encompass more than people who want to volunteer,” he said. “We want to create avenues of interest.”

One last proven practice. Bird scooters in Alliance go south (pick a direction) for the winter. I have heard robins and other feathered friends though have not seen these rechargeable conveyances. Al, from Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, hails from a part of the country where rentable electric scooters do not migrate yet still disappear. That affiliate has been operating an e-scooter and bike recovery program. “We had a dive for e-scooters,” he explained. A lady got

one covered with barnacles and the company would not take it back. Al said they learned that it wasn’t accidental – the scooter had been tossed in the canal by the rider. To date they have removed 277 scooters with the help of technical divers. Goals are, No. 1 find and remove scooters; No. 2 educate; and No. 3 address the problem. “Companies had GPS tracking, but wouldn’t commit to them being in the water. . . . Got a lot of attention and people wanted to solve the problem,” Al said. So, no leaving your Bird in Laing Lake.

Keep Alliance Beautiful: Affiliate Proven Practice 

ALLIANCE, March 25, 2024—According to the new ratings from the Insurance Services Office, Inc., The Alliance Fire Department is among the top 15 percent of fire departments in the country and the top 3 percent of fire departments in Nebraska regarding fire suppression capabilities. In addition to making the Alliance area residents feel safer, the higher rating can translate into more affordable property insurance." 

A lot of challenging work went into achieving this newest rating. It was a team effort put forth by our firefighters and Alliance City Council, City Administration, and Alliance Rural Fire District board members," said Alliance Fire Chief Troy Shoemaker. "Over the last few years, we have upgraded equipment, purchased and installed our live-fire training facility, and started developing the training grounds, improving our training program. Those efforts, combined with those of the Alliance Public Safety Communications Center and Public Works with our water distribution system, significantly improved our rating. We are already considering how to maintain our new rating." 

The Insurance Service Office (ISO) evaluates and classifies more than 40,000 fire protection areas across the country, analyzing how each district performs on water supply, emergency communications, needed fire flows, and the equipment, staffing, and training of fire departments, among other factors using their Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS). ISO then assigns a Public Protection Classification (PPC) from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that area's fire suppression program does not meet their minimum criteria. 

The Alliance Fire Department's newest ISO-issued PPC is 03/3Y, making it one of just 3,856 Class 3 fire departments in the U.S. and one of just 24 in Nebraska. Alliance's previous PPC was 04/4Y."I applaud the efforts of Chief Shoemaker, the Alliance Fire Department, Alliance Public Works, and the Alliance Public Safety Communications Center for continually improving the quality of our emergency services," said Alliance City Manager Seth Sorensen. "This will directly translate into savings for our residents in exchange for their continued investment in City services."According to the ISO, a community's investment in fire mitigation measures can be a reliable indicator of future fire losses. Statistical data on insurance losses routinely reflects the relationship between adequate fire protection, measured by the PPC ratings, and low fire losses. Consequently, scores of insurance providers utilize PPC ratings to help set their premiums for homeowners and businesses.

 Typically, fire insurance costs in a community with a highly rated fire department under the ISO classification are lower than in a community with a poor PPC grade. "These excellent marks for the Alliance Fire Department are a textbook example of the residents' tax dollars being put to good use," said Alliance Mayor Earl Jones. "First and foremost, our Fire Department's top-of-the-line practices and procedures help us feel secure in our homes and businesses." If residents can also save money on their insurance, that is just icing on the cake. Fire Chief Shoemaker states the new Class 3 classification will be effective May 1, 2024. ISO is an independent company that provides information about risk to insurance companies, communities, fire departments, insurance regulators, and others.

Swim lessons schedule in Alliance announced

MARCH 24, 2024 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska Department of Transportation and the Nebraska State Patrol are urging travelers to be prepared for dangerous winter driving conditions expected over the next few days. A winter storm will impact much of the state beginning tonight.

The National Weather Service is projecting several inches of snow across western and central Nebraska, with strong winds and bitterly cold temperatures. A Blizzard Warning has been issued for an area ranging from southwest to northcentral Nebraska, effective from 7:00 p.m. CT today through 1:00 a.m. CT Tuesday.

“This winter storm will create dangerous driving conditions across a large portion of our state,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Our troopers and dispatchers are prepared to help, but before you attempt to travel during this storm, please consider whether travel is absolutely necessary.”

Do not attempt to travel in blizzard conditions. Travel may be difficult to impossible. Should you become stranded, it may be impossible for help to reach you until the blizzard ends.

If travel is necessary, check the Nebraska 511 system for valuable information regarding travel across the state. Motorists can view live cameras to assess conditions, view a map of road conditions throughout the state, check live radar to see the storm’s current location, view the locations of NDOT plows on the road, and access many more features.

“NDOT’s snowplow crews will be out as the conditions allow it but the public are reminded to slow down, wear your seat belt and never pass a plow if you choose to travel,” said NDOT Director Vicki Kramer.&nbsp;

NDOT will treat roads as appropriate, taking into consideration the different variables that could be present in the varying types of precipitation predicted in this storm.

If any motorists become stranded, call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 or 800-525-5555 to speak directly with an NSP dispatcher who can send help.

NSP, NDOT Urge Caution with Expected Blizzard Conditions

Last week, Owen Burnett announced that he has resigned from the position of Executive Director of the Alliance Chamber of Commerce.

Burnett, an Alliance native had been in the position for ten months and told Panhandle Post that he resigned due to some health concerns. He also said he was grateful to serve in the position and that it has been one of his life's honors to lead the Chamber.

"I would like to extend my deepest thanks to my Board of Directors and the Alliance community for all their continuous support, everyone has had my back since day one and I could not have done the job without all of your input and caring."

Burnett says that he and his family plan on staying in Alliance, as the Board of Directors begin their search for an Executive Director.

CHADRON – Chadron State College students and faculty will now benefit from a $120,000 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The SEM was purchased from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund approved by Congress as part of the 2020 CARES Act. The state-of-the-art equipment&nbsp;can reveal the elements making up a specimen and produce images with more realism than typical microscopes.

The microscope works by bombarding the specimen with electrons, which only works in a vacuum. And to prevent buildup of electrical charge on the specimen, it must be coated with metal, if it is not already conductive.

Dr. Mike Leite, Professor of Physical Science, said the equipment will help students develop skills that potential employers want.

“You can think of applications in industry, law enforcement, environmental research, all of those, across the board. So many fields need another problem-solving skill, and that’s what our students can learn with this microscope,” he said.

He said the ability to collect different types of data and analyze it requires different thought processes.

“The more opportunities we can give our students to collect a wider array of data and then determine how to interpret that, the stronger their creative problem-solving and creative skills are going to be. Students will be able to integrate what they learn with this across all the sciences,” Leite said.

Dr. Joyce Hardy said the SEM will significantly expand the amount and type of research CSC students and faculty can conduct.

“The ability to visualize surface materials with great resolution as well as to analyze chemical element distribution and composition of samples will have significant application for medical, environmental, biological, and ecological research with direct application to our region,” Hardy said.

Leite, Hardy, and Dr. Ryan Morgan, Dean of Business, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences, have experience operating an SEM and plan to develop protocols and planning training sessions for faculty and students.

 CSC Science program receives Scanning Electron Microscope

Chadron, Neb., March 21, 2024— Managers of public lands in the Pine Ridge are planning to conduct prescribed fires in the region, including one that may be the region’s biggest ever.

Conditions pending, the Pine Ridge Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will collaborate to conduct a burn of an estimated 1,700 acres about 10 miles south of Chadron by the end of March. The area includes land between U.S. Highway 385 and Deadhorse Road, including the western portion of Chadron Creek Wildlife Management Area, three Forest Service pastures and some private land.

"Even with this being the largest known prescribed fire on the Pine Ridge, the burn is broken into several smaller sections with defendable fire lines. This will allow fire managers to stop and hold it in the event of changing conditions on the ground," said USFS Pine Ridge District Ranger Tim Buskirk. 

Should there be an unforeseen weather event, fire managers have safeguards in place. Fire personnel will be on scene, patrolling and observing the burn unit until no smoke is visible. These patrols become more frequent if conditions change unfavorably. Officials note that wildfire was an important part of Great Plains ecology before Euro American settlement and that suppression since then has been understandable but problematic.

 Low-intensity prescribed fires help remedy the situation. The benefits include the incineration of underbrush and other material that could make a wildfire extremely hazardous and destructive. It also will combat the invasion of undesirable plant species while enhancing vegetation for wildlife habitat and grazing.&nbsp; 

Fire can help set back dominating non-native cool-season grasses such as smooth and downy brome, for instance, and promote the growth of other plants that provide better nesting, loafing and brood-rearing cover. The pending fire also will reduce the countless dead pines in the area from the 2012 wildfires that have hindered access for noxious weed control and recreation.

 Before ignition, prescribed fires must meet strict requirements for weather conditions and forecasts, fuel moisture, smoke dispersal and staffing. If conditions allow, land managers will tackle more than a half-dozen other smaller prescribed fires this spring. A burn of about 85 acres occurred at Chadron Creek Ranch WMA on March 19. Other Game and Parks properties include Bordeaux, Ponderosa and 

Peterson wildlife management areas. The Forest Service is considering fires at two other locations on its properties — one about 5 miles south of Chadron and the other 7 miles southeast of the city, known as the Slicker and Collins allotments.

By Pine Ridge Ranger DistrictChadron, Neb., March 21, 2024— Managers of public lands in the Pine Ridge are planning to conduct prescribed fires in the region, including one that may be the region’s biggest ever.Conditions pending, the Pine Ridge Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will collaborate to conduct a burn of an estimated 1,700 acres about 10 miles south of Chadron by the end of March. The area includes land between U.S. Highway 385 and Deadhorse Road, including the western portion of Chadron Creek Wildlife Management Area, three Forest Service pastures and some private land."Even with this being the largest known prescribed fire on the Pine Ridge, the burn is broken into several smaller sections with defendable fire lines. This will allow fire managers to stop and hold it in the event of changing conditions on the ground," said USFS Pine Ridge District Ranger Tim Buskirk. Should there be an unforeseen weather event, fire managers have safeguards in place. Fire personnel will be on scene, patrolling and observing the burn unit until no smoke is visible. These patrols become more frequent if conditions change unfavorably. Officials note that wildfire was an important part of Great Plains ecology before Euro American settlement and that suppression since then has been understandable but problematic. Low-intensity prescribed fires help remedy the situation. The benefits include the incineration of underbrush and other material that could make a wildfire extremely hazardous and destructive. It also will combat the invasion of undesirable plant species while enhancing vegetation for wildlife habitat and grazing.&nbsp; Fire can help set back dominating non-native cool-season grasses such as smooth and downy brome, for instance, and promote the growth of other plants that provide better nesting, loafing and brood-rearing cover. The pending fire also will reduce the countless dead pines in the area from the 2012 wildfires that have hindered access for noxious weed control and recreation. Before ignition, prescribed fires must meet strict requirements for weather conditions and forecasts, fuel moisture, smoke dispersal and staffing. If conditions allow, land managers will tackle more than a half-dozen other smaller prescribed fires this spring. A burn of about 85 acres occurred at Chadron Creek Ranch WMA on March 19. Other Game and Parks properties include Bordeaux, Ponderosa and Peterson wildlife management areas. The Forest Service is considering fires at two other locations on its properties — one about 5 miles south of Chadron and the other 7 miles southeast of the city, known as the Slicker and Collins allotments.More information may be obtained by contacting the field office at Ponderosa Wildlife Management Area near Crawford or the Pine Ridge Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service in Chadron. LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Corn Board (NCB) and Nebraska Soybean Board (NSB) have partnered together for the 2024 Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week because everyone deserves to go home from work each day. The goal is to raise awareness among farmers and agricultural workers about the importance of safety when working in and around grain bins. This initiative also emphasizes the significance of overall safety practices on the farm.

As Nebraska farmers strive for innovation and higher yields, there has been a notable increase in on-farm storage. According to the USDA NASS report in 2023, there were over 890 million bushels of corn stored on Nebraska farms, an increase of 31% from 2022. Nebraska soybeans also saw a 39% increase over 2022 with 87 million bushels of soybeans stored on Nebraska farms.

An increase in on-farm storage means more risk for accidents associated with grain handling and bin storage. NCB and NSB encourage farmers and those in the agriculture industry to stay focused, planned and safe during “Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week” and throughout the year.

“Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week” takes place from March 25 to 29 and is organized through a collaboration between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the U.S. Department of Labor, the National Grain and Feed Association, the Grain Elevator and Processing Society and the Grain Handling Safety Council.

In 2022, at least 42 grain bin entrapments were reported in Nebraska, the highest in a decade. It takes merely four seconds for an adult to sink to knee-deep in the suction of flowing grain, and within 20 seconds, they can be completely engulfed. NCB and NSB encourage those who work in and around grain bins to have a plan in place for safety and to properly learn safety steps. With proper safety procedures, grain bin accidents are preventable.

The only true way to help reduce the risk of grain entrapment on your farm or facility is to strongly discourage people from entering a bin unless&nbsp;it’s absolutely necessary.&nbsp;If necessary, follow these seven steps aimed at grain bin safety.

 <li>Ensure all equipment and power sources for grain handling equipment have been shut off, secured or properly locked.</li><li>The person entering the grain bin must wear a safety harness and lifeline attached and properly secured, or be seated in a boatswain chair - a device that allows a person to suspend from a rope to perform work in high places.</li><li>Wear an appropriate dust mask or respirator when entering grain bins. Grain bins contain substantial amounts of dust and/or mold and present a hazard to workers.</li><li>Never enter a grain bin alone.</li><li>There must be an observer located outside of the grain bin that is able to monitor the person inside the bin.</li><li>Ensure the observer and person in the bin can easily communicate.</li><li>Ensure that rescue resources are available if the person does become entrapped.</li>
