Alliance, NE – Snow-Redfern Foundation is honored to announce seven talented High School Seniors selected as scholarship recipients for the Snow-Redfern Foundation managed scholarship funds.

Two young people were selected by the Snow-Redfern Foundation Scholarship Review Circle to receive the Hempel Family Scholarship in the fall of 2024. Addisyn Muhr, of Alliance, will be attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to study Pre-Health Radiology. Aiden Benda, of Hemingford, will be attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to pursue a degree in Finance.

Five students were selected for the K.M. Dahlstedt Scholarship to be awarded for the fall of 2024. Brookelynn Warner, of Hemingford, will be attending Laramie County Community College to pursue a degree in Animal Sciences. Camden Wade, of Alliance, will be pursuing a degree in Comic Design at Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in New Jersey. Holden Schultz, of Broadwater (Bridgeport High School), will pursue a Business &amp;amp; Theology degree from Chadron State College. Regan Braun, of Alliance, will attend the University of Nebraska at Kearney to pursue a nursing degree. Kalli Bridge, of Alliance, will attend the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to pursue a degree in Nutrition and Health Science.

Preference for the scholarships is given to seniors who attend high school in Box Butte or Morrill Counties and plan to pursue careers in trades or careers related to agriculture or STEM, as well as students that will attend college in Nebraska, or return to Nebraska upon obtaining their degree.

This year’s Scholarship Review Circle included Snow-Redfern Foundation board members- Rob Eirich (Scottsbluff), Teresa Sanders (Alliance), Karla Bennetts (Kearney), and Andrew Hunzeker (Scottsbluff). This year additional voice was integrated into decision-making, including Kevin Dahlstedt of the K.M. Dahlstedt (formerly of Alliance) scholarship fund and two college first-year students that completed Snow-Redfern’s Root2Rise Young Women’s Leadership experience and scholarship award in 2023: Arielle Lawrence, now a freshman at UNK, and Kierra Miller, a freshman at Dakota State University.

“We value youth voice, community wisdom, and meaningful engagement and have been exploring all ways in which we can infuse our work and decision-making processes with the lived experience of those that are most impacted by our funds,” shared Executive Director, Sara Wilcox.

The scholarship awards are intended to pay homage to our roots as Nebraska Boys Ranch which instilled ranching values for over 70 plus years providing kids with the skills they need to be successful throughout their lives. The scholarship also emphasizes the simple concept of providing opportunity to kids who want to return to their rural communities to share their skills and education.

The Hempel Family Scholarship award has been an ongoing and generous gift honoring Mr. and Ms. Hempel, who were consistently generous contributors to Snow-Redfern Foundation, formerly the Nebraska Boys Ranch. Mr. Hempel was a long-time board member and he and his family supported the youth at Nebraska Boys Ranch through service and contributions intended to impact the lives of the youth placed at the Ranch. The K.M. Dahlstedt Scholarship was developed two years ago in partnership with the Dahlstedt family, who desired to honor their father and husband through awards focusing on the future success of students pursuing trades in our community.

Snow Redfern Foundation announce scholarship recipients

CHADRON – An eagle feather ceremony in honor of Chadron State College graduating senior Vernon Plenty Bull of Allen, South Dakota, took place in Armstrong Gym April 28.

According to Plenty Bull, eagle feather ceremonies are traditionally hosted by Native American groups to honor individuals for significant accomplishments. Plenty Bull’s ceremony was in honor of his upcoming graduation.

The ceremony was conducted by medicine man Steve Dubray, who is Plenty Bull’s uncle. Other family members also participated by joining in the processional and speaking. His parents, Pete and Mary Plenty Bull, presented him with a star quilt.

During the ceremony, a drum circle performed a song specific to graduation, according to Dubray.

Dubray praised his nephew for putting in early mornings, late nights, and lots of hard work to obtain his degree making him especially deserving of the honor.

Director of Project Strive/TRiO Jen Schaer admires Plenty Bull’s growth and involvement on campus.

“Vernon has come a long way since he started at CSC,” Schaer said. “His passion for learning and growing as a person has led to his success. Vernon has pushed himself and has been a Resident Assistant in Housing, worked security, and has been active in many clubs and Project Strive. He loves to write, and his passion took him to the Story Catcher writing workshop last summer. Writing is a great way for Vernon to express himself and gives him an outlet.”

Schaer believes Plenty Bull deserved the eagle feather.

“A feather-tying ceremony is a wonderful way to celebrate Vernon’s accomplishments and his graduation. He is paving the path for his younger siblings, cousins, and relatives in his family.&nbsp; I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Vernon,” Schaer said.

Veterans Service Office to hold job fair in Chadron for vets

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Health Professions students advancing to professional schools were honored during a banquet at Country Kitchen last week.

The guest speaker was an alumnus of the program, Joseph Keating of Casper, Wyoming. He will graduate from the University of Washington Medical School and has been accepted to Vanderbilt University for Anesthesiology.

Keating said the opportunity to speak eight years after advancing through the program was a valuable time to reflect and offer advice.

“Professional school will be a rough adjustment. There will be lots of studying, exams, and the stress that comes with that. Chadron is an excellent program. You already have the skills you need to adapt to the academic rigor. If you can swing it here, you will do just fine,” Keating said.

Keating offered several tips to the students.

“It’s okay to cry with your patients, but don’t cry first, and don’t cry the loudest,” he said. “Medical school exposed me to more humanity than I ever could have prepared for. People come to you for help at their most vulnerable. It is an incredible privilege and an incredible burden.”

He advised the students to carve out time to deal with their emotions.

“Take care of yourself. No matter how unaffected you may feel by inevitable tragic patient encounters, when it rains, everyone gets wet,” Keating said. “You made the right choice, this field is so worth it. You meet people who will inspire you with the way they overcome seemingly insurmountable adversity.

Buckle up. Your life will never be boring.”

Chadron Health Professions students recognized at banquet

Alliance, NE – Box Butte County RSVP will be hosting a mobile food pantry in conjunction with Northwest Community Action Partnership and Food bank for the Heartland on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. This is a free program which distributes food to families in Alliance, serving one distribution per car.

To ensure safe access to the Senior Center located at 212 Yellowstone Avenue, the Alliance Police Department are asking patrons to begin at the northeast corner of East 2 nd Street and Yellowstone Avenue. SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (May 1, 2024) -&nbsp;WNCC will confer 331 degrees, diplomas, and certificates at the 92nd Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 11.

Morgan Baird, Miss Nebraska 2023, of Gering, will deliver this year's commencement address. Baird is a graduate of WNCC (Class of 2021) where she studied Social Science before transferring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in May of 2023.

Baird was crowned Miss Nebraska in June 2023 and since has shared her service initiative, "Rock the Vote: Engaging the Political Power of Young People," that encourages young people to become involved in the political process.

The commencement ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Cougar Palace. In addition to commencement, WNCC will hold two additional ceremonies on May 11. The nurse pinning ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Judy Chaloupka Theater and the adult education graduation is scheduled for 4 p.m., also in the theater.

The commencement and nurse pinning ceremonies will be livestreamed&nbsp;for those who are unable to attend in person. Chadron, Neb., May 1, 2024—On August 9th, Smokey Bear will turn 80 years old. There will be opportunities to see Smokey at Forest, Grassland and community events all over the footprint of Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands (NNFG).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The celebration starts today with a coloring contest open to area students, with categories for&nbsp;&nbsp;

ages 3-6, 7-11, and 12-15. Students can print coloring pages from the 80th celebration’s website,&nbsp; or pick them up at local NNFG office and visitor center locations. The coloring pages must be&nbsp;&nbsp;

turned in by July 31st, either to a local NNFG US Forest Service office location, mailed via US&nbsp;&nbsp;

I remember teaching my kids to drive. We purchased a small used car with a manual transmission when our daughter turned 15. Many hours were spent with both kids navigating the Maze in Alliance's Homestead Addition. They learned to handle the vehicle, shift gears, back up, park, use mirrors, gauge speed, types of turns, watch for obstructions, etc. before actually driving on streets with other vehicles. I enjoyed being chauffeured everywhere for seven years! And our children both took summer driver's education courses so we got the auto insurance deduction.

We all think our rural kids are better drivers. However, Box Butte and Scotts Bluff Counties rank in the top ten in Nebraska for crashes due to improper driving, speed, and distraction according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD) is asking parents to complete a survey at <a href="https://tinyurl.com/ypxrakpd">https://tinyurl.com/ypxrakpd</a> regarding driver's education courses. Only 20% of Panhandle teens take Driver's Education courses, compared to the state average of 50%. Driver's education reduces crashes and traffic tickets.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published Driver Education Program Facts and Figures. Their findings: Teen drivers who have not completed driver's education are 16% more likely to have a crash. They are 24% more likely to be involved in a fatal or injurious crash.

Not only are teens who have not taken driver’s education more likely to be involved in crashes, they are 75% more likely to get a traffic ticket.

In Nebraska, most teens get a learner's permit, and then have to log 50 hours of practice driving under the supervision of a parent or other adult. UNL researchers have found that, during their first year of driving, students who took driver’s ed had significantly fewer accidents and traffic tickets than the group that logged driving hours without formal driving instruction.

Since the 2013-2014 school year, Nebraska high school students have been asked to complete the Teen Driving Experiences Survey. The most recent results online are from the survey completed in January, 2023, by 1,777 students from twelve Nebraska high schools. Survey highlights - all risky behaviors:

Driven a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt: 29%

Ridden in a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt: 51%

Talked on a cell phone while driving: 71%

Ridden with a driver who had been drinking: 15%

Ridden with a driver who had used marijuana: 7%

Driven with two or more teen passengers and no adults: 59%

Driver's education courses typically have classroom instruction on topics such as vehicle safety, laws and regulations, vehicle operation, and factors affecting driving, like alcohol, road conditions, distraction, etc. Students also have behind the-wheel driving practice with a trained instructor.

Driving has changed. Our roads and technology have changed. If I were teaching my kids now, I would have to add roundabouts, zipper merging, backup cameras, and using GPS maps.

WNCC is offering a driver's ed course July 8-12 for ages 14-17. The cost is $195, and the instructor is Richard Kennedy. Students must have a learner's permit. They will complete 20 hours of classroom time and must score 70% or higher on the final exam. Then they drive five hours with the driving test instructor and must pass the driving test. Informed, competent, and safe teen drivers ultimately reduce the risk of crashes, injuries, and fatalities on our nation’s roadways. And driver's education helps make our teens safer drivers.

UNL researchers have found that, during their first year of driving, students who took driver’s ed had significantly fewer accidents and traffic tickets than the group that logged driving hours without formal driving instruction.Since the 2013-2014 school year, Nebraska high school students have been asked to complete the Teen Driving Experiences Survey. The most recent results online are from the survey completed in January, 2023, by 1,777 students from twelve Nebraska high schools. Survey highlights - all risky behaviors:Driven a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt: 29%Ridden in a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt: 51%Talked on a cell phone while driving: 71%Text messaged while driving: 66%Ridden with a driver who had been drinking: 15%Ridden with a driver who had used marijuana: 7%Driven with two or more teen passengers and no adults: 59%Driver's education courses typically have classroom instruction on topics such as vehicle safety, laws and regulations, vehicle operation, and factors affecting driving, like alcohol, road conditions, distraction, etc. Students also have behind the-wheel driving practice with a trained instructor.Driving has changed. Our roads and technology have changed. If I were teaching my kids now, I would have to add roundabouts, zipper merging, backup cameras, and using GPS maps.WNCC is offering a driver's ed course July 8-12 for ages 14-17. The cost is $195, and the instructor is Richard Kennedy. Students must have a learner's permit. They will complete 20 hours of classroom time and must score 70% or higher on the final exam. Then they drive five hours with the driving test instructor and must pass the driving test. This contribution comes as part of the community match pledged when BBDC applied for the Rural Workforce Housing Fund Grant. This generous donation helped the matching fund from the community reach a total of $375,000. This match will unlock $750,000 from the State Program granting the Alliance community a total of $1,125,000 for the rehabilitation and new construction of housing for the local workforce. This state program aims to increase the supply and reduce the costs of workforce housing in Nebraska's rural communities.

“One of Platte Valley Bank’s core values is supporting the communities that we are a part of. We believe that a community is not just made up of buildings and businesses, but also homes and families. We look to lead by example as a bank that is involved in the betterment of peoples’ lives, which is why we fully support this program and the good it does in our community,” said Platte Valley Bank Community President Rob Bila.

Platte Valley Bank contributes $20K to BBDC for Rural Workforce Housing Fund 

The University of Nebraska Medical Center will honor three individuals with special awards at its May 4 Omaha&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unmc.edu/student-success/academic-records/commencement/index.html" target="_blank">commencement</a>&nbsp;at 9 a.m. at Baxter Arena.

Barry Gold, PhD, emeritus professor and former chair of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Science for achievement in the advancement of science and service in the health sciences fields.

Nebraskans Kent Lacey, MD, and Michael Sitorius, MD, will be honored with the J.G. Elliott Award for their significant contributions to medicine and health programs for the state of Nebraska. The honor is named for Jack Elliott, a longtime University of Nebraska regent who died in 1974.

The honorary doctorate is a homecoming for Dr. Gold, an esteemed scientist. Prior to his career at Pittsburgh, he spent more than 30 years at UNMC’s Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases and Eppley Cancer Center. At UNMC, Dr. Gold’s leadership was indispensable, both as a mentor to his fellow faculty members, and as acting, then interim director of the Eppley Institute at a crucial time.

Dr. Gold’s leadership of the Eppley Institute included establishing the foundation for building a strong program in DNA repair and the discussions which led to the founding of the Cattlemen's Ball of Nebraska. In the decades since, the Cattlemen’s Ball has raised millions for cancer research, and deepened UNMC’s outreach efforts to the state’s rural communities.

Dr. Lacey practiced family medicine in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Jack Elliott’s hometown, for 37 years. Throughout his career, Dr. Lacey has been lauded for his mentorship of nursing and medical students and family medicine residents. And, for his caring manner.

In one especially memorable moment, Dr. Lacey made a reverse house call – while he had to stay home to watch his own kids, he invited a mother to bring her sick child to see him at his house. He recommended an ER visit for a spinal tap, which showed the young girl had meningitis.

Dr. Sitorius, a Cozad, Nebraska, native, meant to stay at UNMC for one year before going on to rural practice. Instead, over a 42-year career at UNMC, he’s arguably had as big an impact on rural health in the state of Nebraska as anyone in the past 40 years. The UNMC Department of Family Medicine under Dr. Sitorius’ leadership has had a role in training about 70% of Nebraska’s practicing family physicians. He has developed and overseen numerous initiatives to find potential medical students within Nebraska’s rural communities and see them return to the state’s rural areas as practicing physicians.

United Way of Western Nebraska and Riverstone Bank are proud to announce their partnership in hosting the 7th Annual United Way Color Dash. The Color Dash presented by Riverstone Bank is a colorful 5K for runners of all levels and abilities set for June 1, 2024 in Gering. Racers will be completely transformed by vibrant color.

During the race route, participants run through color stations where volunteers at each “Splash Station” throw handfuls of colored cornstarch-based paint on runners as they pass by. The paint is non-toxic and biodegradable. Participants enjoy pit stops throughout the race where local businesses and sponsors pass out goodies and then enjoy a color dance party after they cross the finish line. A live DJ bumps the musical vibes at the end to celebrate.

As a non-competitive run or walk event, the United Way Color Dash presented by Riverstone bank attracts runners of all different ages, fitness levels, and experience. This 5K fun event begins and ends at Five Rock Amphitheater in Gering. The course winds through Gering where the public can purchase paint to throw on the participants.

A native of Pennsylvania, Stinner came to Nebraska on a full athletic scholarship and was a member of the University of Nebraska national championship football team in 1970-71. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1973 and a master’s in economics from UNL in 1976.
