The Alliance girls' and boys' basketball teams went to Bayard on Tuesday night and Bayard won the girls game 39-29 while Alliance won 77-38 in the boy contest.

The Lady Bulldogs started the game strong against Bayard using their defense to take an early 10-8 lead, then 17-15 at halftime. Bayard tied the game going into the 3rd quarter at 27-7 before outscoring Alliance 10-2 in the final quarter.&nbsp;

Macey Seebohm had a team high 14 points for the Bulldogs, Cierra "Cici" Hudson had seven while Jaelynne Clarke had five and Addi Weber had three.

Alliance fell to 3-4 on the season while Bayard improved to 8-1.

On the boy's side Alliance used defense to score in transition at will on the Tigers in their 77-38 win and had four players score in double-figures in Espen Lanik with 19, Seth Meyring with 15 and Landen Crowe with 10.

The win for the Bulldogs was their first at an away gym this season to improve to 2-5 on the season. Bayard falls to 2-7.

Happy Holidays from Dean Larry Gossen,&nbsp; Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Starting in November, through the Thanksgiving season, and all the way through the end of the calendar year, I just love the atmosphere, the attitudes, and the opportunities to show our gratitude.

Regardless of which holiday you observe during the season, one thing they all have in common is a focus on gifts, family, friends, and celebrations. I, for one, celebrate Christmas, but I have friends who celebrate other holidays during this time.

I love to listen to Christmas music. We used to wait until Thanksgiving before we pulled out the box of CDs (yes, I’m still pretty much old school) and started listening to our favorite songs. Now, it seems we start listening earlier and earlier each year. I believe it might have been November 1 when the first “I heard the bells” came wafting from the CD player.

What I find interesting is how everyone’s taste in music differs, even with Christmas music. I recently did an internet search for “100 best Christmas Songs”. I must say I wasn’t too surprised and actually knew a few of the top 10 to 15, but I really hadn’t even heard of most of the songs on that top 100 list. My typical playlist sounds a lot different than that.

Then I searched for “classic Christmas Songs,” and the list became a little more familiar. I guess those are the ones I grew up listening to, and there are fond memories of family gatherings in the living room as we decorated the tree up until we opened the presents.

My next search was for “traditional religious Christmas songs.” This search generated the song list that we would sing in church every Sunday during the Advent season, that time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. These songs were very familiar to me.

This is when I decided that no search would generate a “Larry’s favorites” playlist. As I look through our (several) boxes of Christmas CDs, I see albums from a very eclectic group of artists. From George Strait, Vince Gill, and Alabama, to Bing Crosby and Andy Williams, or Sandi Patty, Pentatonix, Chris Tomlin, or The Martins, my favorites are as varied as ever.

My point is this. I may have my favorites, and you might have a totally different taste in Christmas music, but that’s okay. We can still be friends. We don’t have to see eye-to-eye on our music options. We probably even like different foods, different vehicles, or different types of TV shows or movies.

The same is true in our everyday thoughts, beliefs, or politics. We do not all see things in this world the very same way from the very same perspective. And that’s okay! That’s the great thing about this country – we all have the freedom to be ourselves. And we can still be friends.

During this holiday season, my prayer is that people will just get along, that friends will take care of each other, that neighbors will watch out for their neighbors, that families will hold civil conversations around the dinner table, that drivers will show a little grace when the roads are crowded, and that we can all be thankful for whatever blessings we have.

On behalf of the Gossen family and the entire NCTA community, I want to wish everyone a Happy Holiday season, Merry Christmas, and a very happy and prosperous New Year.

We all know that Christmas honors the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago. This religious holiday has been a part of many cultures, and the way we celebrate the holiday in America today is related to those religious roots. But what about all the other parts of our Christmas celebrations?

Where did Santa Claus come from? Saint Nicholas was a Christian bishop in Myra, a city in what is now Turkey, during the Roman Empire, around 300 AD. He is the patron saint of children, and legend says he secretly gave gifts and could work miracles.

Stories of Saint Nicholas spread throughout Europe. The variation that had the biggest influence on America was the Dutch Sinterklaas. He is an older man with white hair and a long beard. Sinterklaas wears a long red cape over a white bishop's alb, along with a red mitre hat. Sinterklaas rides a white horse and carries a big, red book which lists all the children and whether they have been naughty or nice in the past year.

A Visit from St. Nicholas, or 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, was written in 1823 by Clement Clark Moore in an area of New York heavily settled by the Dutch. This poem is where we get so much of our Santa Claus story! Two years earlier the poem Old Santeclaus with Much Delight depicted Santa in a sleigh being pulled by a reindeer, and Moore developed that idea. Santa is a jolly old elf who comes down the chimney on Christmas Eve to leave gifts for children. Moore gave him eight reindeer and named them all. And he gave our children the expectation that Santa would bring them a gift!

Thomas Nast, political cartoonist, invented the image of Santa Claus that we use today. Nast first drew Santa Claus for the 1862 Christmas season Harper's Weekly magazine cover to memorialize the family sacrifices of the Union during the Civil War. A few years Nast's cartoons depicted Santa making toys, and watching for naughty and nice children and making a note in his record book. He created images of children sending letters to Santa, talking to him on the telephone, and affectionately embracing ecstatic children. Nast's illustrations are also the first time that Santa’s home is depicted as the North Pole.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created by Robert L. May in 1939. His employer, Montgomery Ward, had been giving away coloring books to customers' children every year. That year they decided to create their own storybook. May's daughter adored reindeer, so he started with the idea of one who was being bullied. Looking out his office window in Chicago, he saw heavy fog settle over Lake Michigan. The idea of a bright red beacon - no, a nose - could shine through the fog and guide Santa. 2.4 million copies of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer were given away the first year! May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, adapted the story of Rudolph into a song.

My childhood years brought many of the Christmas specials we still see on TV. Not only did Rudolph get made into a show where he visited the Island of the Misfit Toys, we also enjoyed Frosty the Snowman, the Little Drummer Boy, and Santa Claus Is Coming to Town. The best would be a toss-up between How the Grinch Stole Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas. These are shows we still watch every December.

How many ways have we adapted Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol? or The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry? I can come up with multiple versions from Disney and the Muppets - and so many more. How many music specials have we enjoyed over the decades? There are new, wonderful stories and programs every year. At some point between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we can watch most of these programs on our televisions.

Look at all the ways Christmas stories have developed over the decades, even over the centuries. They all follow the basic theme of good over evil and the ways we can help each other, especially those who have little and feel left out. How much fun these stories have brought us as we celebrate the Christmas season!

Getting Ahead: Christmas Stories

<a>Women Investing in Nebraska (WIN) is now accepting funding ideas for its 2024 grant awards from University of Nebraska programs and Nebraska nonprofit organizations.</a>

Grants are awarded based on the critical needs being addressed, the people the project serves and the impact made on Nebraskans. Grant seekers must submit an online letter of inquiry by Feb. 13, 2024, at&nbsp;<a href="https://womeninvestinginnebraska.org/grants/letter-of-inquiry/" target="_blank">womeninvestinginnebraska.org</a>.

Based on submissions, WIN will invite 12 to 16 grant seekers to provide formal grant proposals. Grant seekers must be a part of the University of Nebraska System or be a Nebraska nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity.

“WIN is proud to partner each year with organizations that are tackling important issues that matter to Nebraskans, and we’re pleased to again request ideas for funding as we enter our 13th year of philanthropic service to the state,” WIN Chair Meg Lauerman said.

<a>The amount granted will be based on the total amount of gifts received in 2024 from WIN members. WIN will announce its grant awards in fall 2024.</a>

University of Nebraska programs and Nebraska nonprofits eligible for WIN funds

KEARNEY – Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh is credited with saying, “If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.”

Amanda Francescato feels the same way about art.

“Art is all around us,” she says. “You get to look at it every day, and I think it’s something important that kids need in school. It allows students to express themselves and problem solve without even realizing it. They get to be creative, and that’s the best part of it all.”

For Francescato, art has always been both fun and therapeutic. When she’s drawing or painting, she forgets about everything else. It’s a way to relax while also feeling a sense of accomplishment.

“When I get bored, I paint. When I feel stressed, I paint. It just keeps my mind off other things,” she said.

Although art had long been a hobby, the benefits became more clear to her during high school. With support and encouragement from Hershey Public Schools art teacher Brittney Stenger, she started viewing it as a potential career.

“I wasn’t really sure if I wanted to go to college at first, but she really inspired me,” Francescato said. “I thought teaching was the coolest job ever. You get to hang out with kids and you get to teach them and watch them grow.”

After high school, Francescato enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where she continued to pursue this professional goal.

As an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/art/index.php">art education major and photography minor</a>, Francescato benefited from the smaller class sizes, personalized instruction and one-on-one interactions with faculty members.

“That’s something I enjoy a lot, being in a smaller classroom, because I feel like I learn better that way,” she said. “The professors were always really helpful. If you have a question, they’re on top of it. They help you overcome any obstacles that you may face.”

Along with the UNK faculty, Francescato was able to learn from teachers and school administrators currently working in the field. These professionals came to campus to meet with UNK students, and Lopers went to their classrooms for field experiences.

Francescato had the opportunity to observe teachers and lead lessons at Kenwood Elementary School in Kearney and Holdrege Middle School, giving her valuable knowledge and skills. This helped prepare her for a semester of student teaching at Wallace Public School.

Working alongside cooperating teacher Melissa Nelms, Francescato got to do a little bit of everything at the small district located about 30 miles south of her hometown.

“She basically handed the classroom over to me,” said Francescato, who taught pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

“I definitely gained a lot of confidence,” she added. “There’s always this thought in the back of your mind, ‘Can I actually teach this many kids in one room? Can I control it?’ But it gave me the confidence that, yeah, I can do this. I know my stuff. And they want to learn from me. They loved having me there, and I think that helped me grow as an educator.”

Francescato enjoyed watching her students make the same progress. For instance, she challenged a high school class to create watercolor landscapes, a project they were slow to embrace.

“They kind of hated me for it,” she said with a laugh.

However, Francescato walked them through the process and used some of her own artwork as examples. In the end, one of the student-created pieces was selected as the main design for the school’s new Art Club sweatshirts.

“I thought that was kind of neat,” Francescato said. “I taught a lesson that they put on a sweatshirt for everyone to see.”

In addition to her classroom duties, Francescato helped the Art Club repaint a mural at the local veterans memorial, assisted at a Family Art Night and volunteered at fundraisers for the art department, junior class and Quiz Bowl team.

Nelms called her a “very dedicated” teacher who’s not afraid to go above and beyond to support students.

“Amanda brought a very positive attitude and new, enriching lessons to the classroom,” Nelms said. “She created a great rapport with students and was able to communicate with them at an effective level. She did great as a student teacher and her future in the teaching profession is promising. Any school district would be very lucky to have her be part of their team.”

Francescato received a Bachelor of Arts in Education during Friday’s winter commencement ceremony, making her the first member of her family to earn a four-year degree. Fittingly, she wore a dress covered in drawings from young Wallace Public School art students and a cap that read, “Time to Gogh Teach.”

“It’s been fun,” Francescato said of her time at UNK. “It was definitely a learning experience. It got me out of my comfort zone, and I really enjoy being in environments that allow me to grow and learn.”

Francescato plans to substitute teach this spring before starting a full-time position.

“I hope I can show students that art is fun and prove that they can do whatever they put their mind to,” she said.

They loved having me there, and I think that helped me grow as an educator.”Francescato enjoyed watching her students make the same progress. For instance, she challenged a high school class to create watercolor landscapes, a project they were slow to embrace.“They kind of hated me for it,” she said with a laugh.However, Francescato walked them through the process and used some of her own artwork as examples. In the end, one of the student-created pieces was selected as the main design for the school’s new Art Club sweatshirts.“I thought that was kind of neat,” Francescato said. “I taught a lesson that they put on a sweatshirt for everyone to see.”In addition to her classroom duties, Francescato helped the Art Club repaint a mural at the local veterans memorial, assisted at a Family Art Night and volunteered at fundraisers for the art department, junior class and Quiz Bowl team.Nelms called her a “very dedicated” teacher who’s not afraid to go above and beyond to support students.“Amanda brought a very positive attitude and new, enriching lessons to the classroom,” Nelms said. “She created a great rapport with students and was able to communicate with them at an effective level. She did great as a student teacher and her future in the teaching profession is promising. Any school district would be very lucky to have her be part of their team.”Francescato received a Bachelor of Arts in Education during Friday’s winter commencement ceremony, making her the first member of her family to earn a four-year degree. Fittingly, she wore a dress covered in drawings from young Wallace Public School art students and a cap that read, “Time to Gogh Teach.”“It’s been fun,” Francescato said of her time at UNK. “It was definitely a learning experience. It got me out of my comfort zone, and I really enjoy being in environments that allow me to grow and learn.”Francescato plans to substitute teach this spring before starting a full-time position.“I hope I can show students that art is fun and prove that they can do whatever they put their mind to,” she said.

KCOW will have two intriguing matchups tonight (Tuesday) in high school basketball as Alliance travels to Bayard in a girls and boys doubleheader.

First with the girl's game, the Bulldogs (3-3) have their 2nd straight tough matchup coming off of a loss to Sidney on Saturday, and now face Bayard who is 7-1 after beating Mitchell 54-8 on Monday night. Alliance will try to use their experience and excellent defense to get the win, while Bayard also is strong both offensively and defensively holding 6 teams under 40 points.

On the boy's side, Alliance's record at 1-5 is deceiving considering they have been competitive in almost all of their losses, but they feel this week is a great opportunity to get on track starting with a game at 2-6 Bayard.

Both of these teams lose talent from last year, but Bayard plays mostly freshmen and sophomores and are coming of a 68-34 loss to Mitchell on Monday night.

On December 14, 2023, officers with the Chadron Police Department, the Dawes County Sheriff’s Office, and the WING task force served a warrant on a residence in Chadron after the Chadron Police Department received information that electricity from NPPD was being unlawfully directed to the residence. During this search, a scale and baggies containing a white powdered residue were located. A second search warrant was sought and obtained for controlled substances.

During the second search, items associated with the consumption of methamphetamine and heroin were discovered as well two types of suspected controlled substances which tested positive for methamphetamine and heroin. Both 38-year-old Andrea Bode and 33-year-old Brenton Daniel were developed as suspects based on evidence obtained at the residence.

Bode was later arrested and held at the Dawes County Jail for Child Abuse, a Class IIIA Felony, Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Class IV Felony, two counts of Theft of Services valued less than $500, a Class II Misdemeanor, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, an infraction. Her bond was set at 10% of $50,000. Daniel was arrested and held at the Dawes County Jail for Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Class IV Felony and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, an infraction. His bond was set at 10% of $30,000.

A minor child was discovered to reside in the home with Bode and was placed into Department of Health and Human Services custody after Bode was arrested.

DECEMBER 18, 2023 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— As the holiday season rolls on, troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol are working to keep roadways safe across the state. Troopers arrested seven impaired drivers during the first weekend of the national&nbsp;Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over&nbsp;campaign.

During the campaign, which began Friday and runs through January 1, troopers, deputies, and officers from law enforcement agencies across the country will be on patrol to remove impaired drivers from the road. The&nbsp;Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over&nbsp;campaign is a national mobilization coordinated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

During the first weekend of the campaign, troopers removed seven impaired drivers from the road, cited 26 drivers for speeding at over 90 miles per hour, and performed 61 motorist assists. So far in 2023, troopers have made 1,134 arrests for driving under the influence.

As the campaign continues, troopers and dispatchers will be working overtime, performing high-visibility patrols across the state. This effort is made possible thanks in part to grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

The 2023 Nebraska Cattlemen Annual Convention and Trade Show held its annual banquet on Dec. 7, honoring individuals and businesses important to the beef industry. Among them was Dr. Mitch Stephenson, Associate Professor and Range Management Specialist with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln stationed at the Panhandle Research, Extension, and Education Center in Scottsbluff.

Stephenson received the Nebraska Range &amp; Conservation Endowment. It honors professors or instructors who are providing cutting-edge research and/or student instruction in a range management and conservation-related areas. One area of his research has been focused on understanding how grazing management decisions influence livestock production, grazing behavior, plant communities, and soil health in the central and western Great Plains.

“Really understanding the timing of grazing is an important concept in range management. As we understand it more, we can start rotating timing on pastures to better match livestock demand with strategic rangeland objectives,” Stephenson said.&nbsp;

Stephenson’s research has found that the timing of grazing can be a positive or a negative. For example, targeted grazing at the right time can be important for managing species like cool-season growing annual invasive grasses, but repeated grazing of pastures during the elongation period of some of our more desirable perennial grasses can reduce their abundance.

His research includes virtual fencing and other precision livestock management tools for defined objectives, targeted grazing and other cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) management, drought management response, and patch-burn grazing in the Nebraska Sandhills.

“I really appreciate the Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation for providing this award and the support they give for rangelands in the state, not only for beef production but also for conservation and all the other ecosystem services they provide.”

The Nebraska Range &amp; Conservation Endowment was established in December 2011 and provides grants to range management and conservation research and/or teaching positions at Nebraska post-secondary educational institutions.

Married in 2009, Joe and Kasandra Niemeier moved to Alliance 12 years ago from southern Missouri. Kasandra wrangles the kids and runs their “taxi service.” Joe works for BNSF Railway.

Q: How long have you been on curbside, and why did you sign up?

Kasandra: Three years. Wriley started crying after KAB came to school (fourth grade Black Ops) when we were in the park and were throwing something away (she thought we should recycle). Next week we signed up. We keep a couple containers and sort it in the house. Then Joey takes it out to the KAB containers. The hardest part is when you have people come over and think it’s the trash. Joe: Or they don’t understand recycling.

Joe: We try anything that’s recyclable. Kasandra: Lots of paper from the kids’ schoolwork. (Saw how much was being recycled and reduced some items, like a lot of drink bottles).

Q: How has this service influenced your opinion of recycling?

Kasandra: I think we need to do more recycling. It’s been convenient. Joe: The kids use it for crafts then we recycle that. Kasandra: Archer won his division in the (KAB/Knight Museum) art show with a fish.

Q: Newest thing you’ve added to the bag?

Q: Why do you feel it is important to recycle?

Kasandra: God tells us we’re supposed to take care of the Earth. Future generations (should have) a clean planet. Joe: Taking a load out to the landfill and 95 percent of that stuff is recyclable. And, Wriley guilted us. Kasandra: By 2040 they’re predicting clean water will go away and recycling will help with that.

Q: Other “green” practices at your home?

Joe: Try to keep lights off and do the programmable thermostat. Kasandra: Going to more native plants. Joe: We’re growing Dutch white clover – better on water and it’s a nitrogen fixer. Kasandra: We carpool and Joey rides his bike to work. We also garden and can.

Wriley started crying after KAB came to school (fourth grade Black Ops) when we were in the park and were throwing something away (she thought we should recycle). Next week we signed up. We keep a couple containers and sort it in the house. Then Joey takes it out to the KAB containers. The hardest part is when you have people come over and think it’s the trash. Joe: Or they don’t understand recycling.Q: What do you recycle?Joe: We try anything that’s recyclable. Kasandra: Lots of paper from the kids’ schoolwork. (Saw how much was being recycled and reduced some items, like a lot of drink bottles).Q: How has this service influenced your opinion of recycling?Kasandra: I think we need to do more recycling. It’s been convenient. Joe: The kids use it for crafts then we recycle that. Bird-watchers across the country are part of the 124th National Audubon Society&nbsp;<a href="https://www.audubon.org/conservation/science/christmas-bird-count" target="_blank">Christmas Bird Count</a>&nbsp;between now and early January.One group helps people with disabilities participate in the count, and in birding activities year-round. Virginia Rose, founder and president of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.birdability.org/" target="_blank">Birdability</a>, said she went "birding" from a wheelchair for 20 years and saw almost no other people with visible disabilities.

With support from the National Audubon Society, an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.birdability.org/contribute-to-the-birdability-map" target="_blank">interactive map</a>&nbsp;now identifies accessible birding spots, including 13 in Nebraska.Rose pointed out Audubon turned her list of accessibility features into a survey, and the results were used to crowdsource the first Birdability map."And within maybe a year-and-a-half, there were over 1,000 sites in the U.S.," Rose explained.

"And within three years, there were 15 countries included."Rose noted there are around 50 Birdability "captains" across the country. In addition to identifying accessible parks to add, or "pin" to the map, they lead regular outings for people with disabilities.

An accessible Christmas Bird Count will be held tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Oak Lake in Lincoln, one of&nbsp;<a href="https://noubirds.org/activities/cbc.aspx" target="_blank">several Christmas Bird Counts in Nebraska</a>&nbsp;between now and Jan. 5.Cassandra Dean, Nebraska Birdability captain, said Nebraska Game and Parks helps them promote accessible birding locations through its&nbsp;<a href="https://birdtrail.outdoornebraska.gov/" target="_blank">Go Bird Nebraska</a>&nbsp;website."I pin the sites on the Birdability map, tell Nebraska Game and Parks and then, they go into their webpage and link the Birdability map to their webpage," Dean outlined. "If someone goes onto their webpage, and not normally the Birdability map, they're still taken over to the Birdability map."Dean emphasized several features affect accessibility, including the presence of ramps and railings, as well as the length and slope of the trail and the type of surface."Indian Cave State Park ended up building a new trail for my accessible bird outing event, because their trails have too much of a slope," Dean recounted.

Dean added people can contribute to the Birdability map by indicating the accessibility features of parks they visit which are not yet "pinned."Rose stressed better accessibility benefits large numbers of people."We are not talking only about disabled people; we are talking about every single person who ages," Rose said.

LINCOLN — The state is studying the feasibility of a wildlife crossing spanning a western Nebraska highway after nearly 20 vehicle collisions in recent years with bighorn sheep.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation and the State Game and Parks Commission were recently awarded $400,000 to study ways to reduce vehicle-sheep collisions on the four-lane Heartland Expressway, as it crosses the Wildcat Hills area of Nebraska’s Panhandle.

Between 2009 and 2023, that stretch of Nebraska Highway 71 has had 18 collisions between motorists and bighorn sheep.

Bighorn sheep — which the Game Commission has reintroduced into Nebraska — regularly cross that highway near the entrance to the Wildlife Estates housing area, according to Todd Nordeen, the commission’s big game research and disease program manager.

Nordeen said traffic is expected to increase as the Heartland Expressway is developed further, increasing the risk of crashes and bighorn sheep fatalities.

The study will help determine whether there’s a need for a wildlife crossing, either an underpass tunnel or an overpass, what the cost would be and other possible mitigation strategies.

A wildlife crossing would be a first of its kind in Nebraska, though such overpasses and tunnels have been used successfully in other states, including Colorado, California, North Dakota and Arizona. Grant money would be sought for such a crossing, if recommended, and for other solutions, officials said.

The state has taken steps to mitigate vehicle-wildlife crashes in the past.

In 2011, eight-foot-tall fences were installed, at a cost of $1.4 million, along Interstate 80 in the vicinity of Mahoney State Park and the Platte River to reduce collisions with deer along that forested segment of freeway. The fencing reduced collisions by 85%<a target="_blank" href="https://journalstar.com/news/local/study-i-80-deer-fence-doing-its-job/article_ad228d96-a5cf-52bc-a587-e273c4f0bf4f.html#:~:text=Eight%2Dfoot%2Dhigh%20electric%20and,expansion%20between%20Lincoln%20and%20Omaha.">, the Lincoln Journal-Star reported.</a>

In 2001, fencing was installed in Nebraska’s Sandhills, south of Valentine, to direct Blanding’s turtles into culverts running under U.S. Highway 83.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://westerntransportationinstitute.org/research_projects/evaluating-measures-to-minimize-blandings-turtle-road-mortality-along-nebraska-highways/">An analysis in 2017</a>&nbsp;found that turtle mortality in the fenced areas had decreased 66%.

The latest grant will also be used purchase 10 new radio tracking collars for bighorn sheep to follow their movements. That will help determine whether a wildlife crossing would successfully connect the sheep to rocky habitat on both sides of the highway and reduce collisions, officials said.

“NDOT is committed to reducing all crashes on the highway system,” said Doug Hoevet, a district engineer with the highway department.

The federal grant for Nebraska is part of&nbsp;$110 million in grants recently announced for 19 wildlife crossing pilot projects. They include a possible highway overpass for grizzly bears in Montana, statewide plans to reduce crashes with wildlife in Missouri and South Dakota, and a study of how to reduce collisions involving mule deer and elk on a stretch of highway in New Mexico.

There are more than 1 million wildlife-vehicle collisions each year in the United States, according to the National Wildlife Federation, which is assisting in some of the wildlife crossing projects.

The funding comes from the federal infrastructure law introduced by&nbsp;the Biden administration. The law makes $350 million available to states over a five-year period for such highway safety projects.

Deaths of bighorn sheep on Panhandle highway prompt study of first-of-its-kind wildlife crossing

LINCOLN — Six new troopers were sworn in on Friday — which is said to be the smallest graduating class ever for the Nebraska State Patrol, though a patrol official expressed hope that recruiting will turn around.

Col. John Bolduc, superintendent of the Patrol, said a new recruit class of 17 will begin training in January.

“We hope that begins a new trend,” Bolduc said. “We don’t think this (six new troopers) will be the standard, this will be a one off.”

The labor market is also tight.Young people seek more flexible hours and guaranteed time off, according to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.theiacp.org/sites/default/files/239416_IACP_RecruitmentBR_HR_0.pdf">a report by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.</a>“Mandated overtime and missing holidays with family are less appealing to Millennials and members of Generation Z,” concluded the report, entitled “A Crisis for Law Enforcement.”Retirements and resignations are outpacing the number of new recruits, according to a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.themarshallproject.org/2023/01/21/police-hiring-government-jobs-decline">report by The Marshall Project</a>. It cited government figures indicating that the number of local law enforcement employees had declined by 4% from March 2020 to August 2022 and that government workers as a whole decreased by 5%.<h2>A national trend</h2>“This is a national trend,” Bolduc said. “We’re thankful for their willingness to step up and serve.”The State Patrol, according to its annual report filed earlier this month, added 16 new recruits earlier in 2023.But even with the six new troopers who began work Friday, the state law enforcement agency has 68 vacancies in its authorized strength of 482 sworn positions, which is&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/02/21/state-patrol-seeks-some-more-recruits-as-it-addresses-shortage-of-troopers/">one less vacancy than in February ,when staffing was described as&nbsp;</a>the worst ever.Eleven recruits began training this fall, but only six graduated Friday.Bolduc said that was a higher-than-normal washout rate and said recruit classes typically lose only only a couple of candidates to injuries or other factors.<h2>Some decide ‘this isn’t for me’</h2>“Sometimes, people get into the process and decide this isn’t for me. And that happens,” he said.The state has increased trooper paychecks —<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2022/12/21/nebraska-state-troopers-to-get-22-raises-under-historic-new-labor-contract/">&nbsp;a record 22% increase in trooper salaries</a>&nbsp;was effective July 1 — but the hike came as other, competing law enforcement agencies also upped their pay.Bolduc told the new troopers they will see “the good, bad and the ugly” of society, but also will reap the rewards of serving the public and making a difference.He noted that troopers had “two very close calls” this past week, including a trooper who was seriously injured Monday near Ashland when a teen driver rammed his cruiser during a high-speed pursuit.“You signed up for a challenging career,” he said.Friday’s graduation ceremony in the State Capitol Rotunda also included speeches from Gov. The hour-long ceremony ended with the bagpipe-and-drum corps of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office marching out with the new troopers.They are: Elizabeth Forbes of Fullerton, whose duty station will be Nebraska City;&nbsp;Braden Heidbrink of Lincoln, to duty in Beatrice;&nbsp;Spencer Kort of Schuyler, to Beatrice; Chad Reutlinger of Lexington, where he will be stationed; Marco Vera Chavez of Ord, to Alliance; and&nbsp;Rylan Weaver of Wakefield, to Omaha.
