A summer in western Nebraska has provided inspiration for Maria Teresa Alvarado, an intern from Chile and an undergraduate student at the University of Concepcion.&nbsp;

Alvarado learned about the internship from Kainyon Tay, head of the legume program in Chile with the National Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture (INIA).

“I worked with Tay in Chile. He works with soybeans, garbanzos, and dry beans,” she said. “He told me about the internship, and I applied.” Tay knows Carlos Urrea, UNL dry bean breeder at the Scottsbluff Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center (PREEC). The two have collaborated on winter nurseries and incorporated genes for weevil and bean common mosaic virus resistance into Chilean germplasm.&nbsp;

Alvarado has been working with Urrea and his team to select dry bean lines for the program. This involves making selections based on characteristics such as plant architecture, days to flowering, disease resistance, and days to harvest. Individual plants were selected during the early stages of breeding, with entire entries selected in later stages.

Additional breeding research experience included conducting cooking time and slow-darkening trials, assisting with mother-and-baby trials, inoculating and scoring bean common bacterial blight trials, and performing new hybrid combinations. In addition, Alvarado prepared seed samples for the winter nurseries, including sizing the seed for quality. She also observed the work of the seed inspector and the fumigation process required for seed shipped to Chile.

Alvarado gained extension experience through making presentations at the PREEC Panhandle Agriculture and Technology Tour, interacting with growers in the mother-and-baby trials, and interacting with diverse student workers. She also met with industry representatives, including a visit to Trinidad Benham Corporation, and learned about bean quality standards and procedures.

With the end of harvest and the bean lines picked for the next breeding program, Alvarado will be heading home in December. She looks forward to completing her thesis on the Toromiro tree, which is a legume. The legume uses bacteria species to incorporate and make nitrogen available to the plant. Alvarado is looking to use PCR techniques to identify the bacteria species.&nbsp;

“I like the aspect of agronomy microbiology and legumes, which are a health food and a staple for many people. I would like to become a breeding specialist selecting new variants of good and bad bacteria,” she said. The bad bacteria create disease, but the good improves yield or simulates nitrogen. Another aspect of beans Alvarado would like to work on is making all the seeds' nutrients available to humans. “Beans have iron, but it is not available to humans. I would like to improve the plant and make it (iron) available.”&nbsp;

Alvarado would like to return to western Nebraska and the dry bean fields. “I’m very happy with my time here, I met many people, international and local farmers. It has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I’m so grateful for the way people received me and made me comfortable.”&nbsp;

This internship is a valuable program for training the next generation of plant breeding professionals.

Nebraska's 73-point victory margin was the largest in school history against an NCAA Division I team and its 62 first-half points tied a school record. The Alliance Police Department issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon about a lockdown at Alliance High School due to an incident at AHS.

APD received a report of a student with a gun at Alliance High School at 1:36 p.m. MT and the school immediately went into lockdown.

Alliance Police Officers with the assistance of Box Butte County Sheriff's Office Deputies made contact with the teenager and the student was placed into custody.

The weapon was recovered without incident and the entire situation remains under investigation.

The holiday season is not a time when all our days are "merry and bright." Some of us have lost a person we are close to - maybe loved dearly. There may be divisions in our family. We simply cannot afford all the things we are expected to spend money on during Christmas. Gift giving is stressful. So are social gatherings. Work may have increased demands. There's not much sunlight, and that affects our mood. Maybe we just feel isolated, lonely.

According to the American Psychological Association (Nov 24, 2023), 38% of people surveyed said their stress increased during the holiday season, which can lead to physical illness, depression, anxiety, and substance misuse.

McLeanHospital.org has published McLean's Guide to Managing Mental Health Around the Holidays. They’ve identified six common issues that come up this time of year, as well as suggestions for ways to address them.

You're lacking the "Holiday Spirit." There is a lot of pressure to be cheerful and social during the holiday season. You may be an introvert, or you may have painful memories surrounding a specific event. Maybe your religious or spiritual traditions don't match those surrounding you. What can you do? Spend more time with people who are like you! Don't feel like you have to participate in everything. And limit the drink - that just makes the feelings worse.

If you are dealing with loss or grief, don't force yourself to celebrate. Friends and family understand. Let your loved ones know how they can support you. Remind yourself that as circumstances change, traditions will change as well, but it takes time.

You may feel pressured to participate in holiday activities, but you want no part of them. Did you read John Grisham's novel Skipping Christmas? or see the movie it became, Christmas with the Kranks? The Kranks decide Christmas is too overwhelming, so they'll spend a couple of weeks in the Caribbean instead. Nah, it didn't work out. But don't be afraid to say No. You don't need to do everything. You don't even need to do anything.

McLean's goes on to suggest that you might outline a plan and communicate it to your friends and family. You could make a schedule of when you will do your shopping, baking, and cleaning. Be sure to schedule time to take care of yourself, to exercise and do activities you enjoy.

comfortably spend, and stick to it! You might set up gift exchanges instead of buying for everyone. Or give the gift of your time, time that can be spent doing something together that you both enjoy. Because our society has become so much more mobile, many of us feel alone or isolated. These feelings are stronger during the holiday season because it's a time of family and of memories. But now it is much easier to do things like video calls. It costs very little to stay connected, even with people somewhere else in the world.

For many people, the holidays are a time to look forward to. However, this isn’t the case for everyone. For some people, the holidays can be an emotionally exhausting and difficult time. As Elvis reminds us, "You'll be doing all right with your Christmas of white, But I'll have a blue, blue, blue, blue Christmas."

Tree of Love in Hemingford set up for local nursing home residents

Photography through the lens of a smart phone still seems a bit foreign. Digital resampling to zoom just does not retain the same look of a 100-500mm telephoto to pick out an owl on a branch or a touchdown catch on a Friday night. However you like to capture an image it is easy to focus on closeups or wide angle views. Recycling tends to be like that for me – the recycling center and who we work directly with on one hand, and national news on the other. One session at the Keep Nebraska Beautiful Conference this fall brought the middle ground – Nebraska – into view.

Haley Nolde, executive director of the Nebraska Recycling Council, highlighted the state of recycling in Nebraska as well as a legislative resolution (163) as part of her presentation. She has been with NRC for four years and director just over a year. Keep Nebraska Beautiful has secured funding in the past from NRC for equipment. I hope to tap the organization in the future for information as our crew continues to handle an increasing volume of recyclables.

At the state level, Haley said, the Department of Environment and Energy is going to conduct a statewide Climate Action Plan – “recycling and waste is not mentioned,” she emphasized. The Environmental Protection Agency has a Waste Characterization Study, Haley added. She showed a slide regarding the study in Nebraska. It will: Quantify the impact of existing recycling programs; Identify opportunities to increase waste diversion; and Develop recommendations for programs and polices that reduce solid waste landfilled and increase marketability of recycled materials. “Hopefully it will turn into a lot of data we can use,” Haley said.

Addressing a room of about two dozen Keep America Beautiful affiliates, Haley implored, “Our input on this interim study (LR 163) is important. . . . Senator Hughes, Dist. 24, introduced the bill. She’s from Seward – their recycling center shut down. We want to provide input so we can hopefully improve recycling in the state.”

The resolution’s overall purpose is to: examine opportunities that increase recycling of municipal solid waste while also facilitating economic development and growth.” Materials leaving the Keep Alliance Beautiful recycling center have been part of “remanufacturing” LR 163 seeks. We sorted paperboard from corrugated cardboard the first few years I worked at KAB. Those clean, dry bales became livestock bedding upon reaching Ogallala. Our undyed No. 2 plastic (milk jugs) becomes dimensional building materials (used like sheetrock) at a plant in Kearney. A personal goal is to work with a business in Box Butte County to remanufacture and sell a material that currently travels hundreds of miles or more to close the loop. “There is not enough recycled material now to meet goals brands have committed to publicly,” Haley said.

The resolution’s study would even examine the potential for updating existing law “to develop and sustain private innovative solutions of managing municipal solid waste . . . into useful products of value for other Nebraska-based industries.” Maybe state funding is what’s needed to grease the gears and boost demand for products from local recyclables.

Lastly, the study looks to generate additional recommendations for “potential legislation to simultaneously increase recycling in Nebraska and promote economic growth.” If our neighbors

throughout the Cornhusker state can see how recycling benefits economic development that is just one more factor in diverting what could be raw material from our landfills.

Recycling in Nebraska could change drastically in the next five to ten years carried by public and political demand. To delve a bit deeper into the future I suggest researching two of Haley’s other topics: LB 1101 Solid Waste Management Programs Study, and how our state could gain ground with Extended Producer Responsibility legislation.

Digital resampling to zoom just does not retain the same look of a 100-500mm telephoto to pick out an owl on a branch or a touchdown catch on a Friday night. However you like to capture an image it is easy to focus on closeups or wide angle views. Recycling tends to be like that for me – the recycling center and who we work directly with on one hand, and national news on the other. One session at the Keep Nebraska Beautiful Conference this fall brought the middle ground – Nebraska – into view.Haley Nolde, executive director of the Nebraska Recycling Council, highlighted the state of recycling in Nebraska as well as a legislative resolution (163) as part of her presentation. She has been with NRC for four years and director just over a year. Keep Nebraska Beautiful has secured funding in the past from NRC for equipment. I hope to tap the organization in the future for information as our crew continues to handle an increasing volume of recyclables.At the state level, Haley said, the Department of Environment and Energy is going to conduct a statewide Climate Action Plan – “recycling and waste is not mentioned,” she emphasized. The Environmental Protection Agency has a Waste Characterization Study, Haley added. She showed a slide regarding the study in Nebraska. It will: Quantify the impact of existing recycling programs; Identify opportunities to increase waste diversion; and Develop recommendations for programs and polices that reduce solid waste landfilled and increase marketability of recycled materials. “Hopefully it will turn into a lot of data we can use,” Haley said.Addressing a room of about two dozen Keep America Beautiful affiliates, Haley implored, “Our input on this interim study (LR 163) is important. . . . Senator Hughes, Dist. 24, introduced the bill. She’s from Seward – their recycling center shut down. We want to provide input so we can hopefully improve recycling in the state.”The resolution’s overall purpose is to: examine opportunities that increase recycling of municipal solid waste while also facilitating economic development and growth.” Materials leaving the Keep Alliance Beautiful recycling center have been part of “remanufacturing” LR 163 seeks. We sorted paperboard from corrugated cardboard the first few years I worked at KAB. Those clean, dry bales became livestock bedding upon reaching Ogallala. Our undyed No. 2 plastic (milk jugs) becomes dimensional building materials (used like sheetrock) at a plant in Kearney. A personal goal is to work with a business in Box Butte County to remanufacture and sell a material that currently travels hundreds of miles or more to close the loop. “There is not enough recycled material now to meet goals brands have committed to publicly,” Haley said.The resolution’s study would even examine the potential for updating existing law “to develop and sustain private innovative solutions of managing municipal solid waste . . . into useful products of value for other Nebraska-based industries.” Maybe state funding is what’s needed to grease the gears and boost demand for products from local recyclables.Lastly, the study looks to generate additional recommendations for “potential legislation to simultaneously increase recycling in Nebraska and promote economic growth.” If our neighborsthroughout the Cornhusker state can see how recycling benefits economic development that is just one more factor in diverting what could be raw material from our landfills.Recycling in Nebraska could change drastically in the next five to ten years carried by public and political demand. To delve a bit deeper into the future I suggest researching two of Haley’s other topics: LB 1101 Solid Waste Management Programs Study, and how our state could gain ground with Extended Producer Responsibility legislation.

Nitrate can be found in lakes, rivers, and groundwater throughout the United States, but particularly in areas of heavy agricultural or industrial use. Nitrate cannot be tasted or smelled if mixed with water and high consumption of nitrates in water can be harmful, particularly to babies.

The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, as part of a statewide study of nitrate pollution in Nebraska aquifers, is asking for help from private well owners to conduct free testing of their water. Public participation is greatly appreciated by NDEE to ensure that the entire state is encompassed in the study. Free sample kits and lab analyses are being offered through January 31. Kits can be ordered online: https://dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/Lab-Price-List.aspx or by calling NDEE at 1-402-471-2186.

As part of testing, if a well result comes back higher than 10 parts per million, what is deemed unsafe, the owners are eligible for up to $4,000 in rebates to install a reverse osmosis system. Owners can submit an application for a system up to June 30, 2024, by visiting: http://dee.ne.gov/Publica.nsf/pages/22-051.

Nebraska has one of the highest rates of pediatric cancer in the nation, and nitrates in the drinking water is one of the contributing factors to this rate. In a state study conducted in 2022 on groundwater quality, 30% of the state’s public water systems were required to test nitrate levels four times a year due to high concentration levels of nitrates. Drinking too much nitrate can affect how blood carries oxygen and can cause what is known as blue baby syndrome in bottle-fed babies. Other symptoms of high nitrate consumption can include decreased blood pressure, increased heart rate, headaches, and vomiting.

Panhandle residents can consult with their local Natural Resource Districts on the reverse osmosis systems to learn more information about installation and testing. For those who live in:

Western Nebraska Community College student Wyatt Hotz is a recipient of the 2023 mikeroweWORKS foundation work ethic scholarship. Hotz was one of 200 recipients from across the country.

Hotz, who is enrolled in WNCC's Powerline Construction &amp; Maintenance program in Alliance, said he first heard about the scholarship because his cousin had applied and received the scholarship the year before. A native of Eatonville, Washington, he grew up with family friends in the powerline trade and wanted to pursue a career where he was able to work with his hands, outside, and earn a decent wage.

"I was really happy when I received the scholarship," Hotz said. "I want a career where I can be outside and work with my hands and this scholarship is helping pay for my tuition."

Founded by the host of the TV series "Dirty Jobs" Mike Rowe, the mikeroweWORKS Foundation's mission is to to help close the skills gap by challenging the stigmas and stereotypes that discourage people from pursuing the millions of available jobs, encouraging people to pursue skilled-labor careers, and proving that careers in the trades are viable. Since its inception,&nbsp;the foundation has granted, or helped facilitate the granting of, more than $5 million in Work Ethic scholarships and other like-minded programs or initiatives that also work to close the skills gap.

During his time in the Powerline program at WNCC, Hotz has enjoyed building relationships with his classmates.

"I like the aspect that our class has gotten close and built a sort of brotherhood with each&nbsp;other," he said.

Hotz is on track to complete the Powerline program this May. WNCC's Powerline program is a three-semester program, with cohorts starting in the summer semester, and graduating the following spring. WNCC offers three award types with the program, a Powerline diploma, a Powerline Certificate, or the most advanced - an Associate of Applied Science degree that includes an additional 15 credit hours of general studies courses.

But for Hotz and many of the Powerline students, the program prepares them for the job after school, because they spend more time on the job than in a classroom.

"I would recommend the program to other people as long as they are willing to work hard and learn," Hotz said. "The program isn't like a normal school, it is like a job. You show up on time and work hard to finish the tasks at hand."

Throughout the week, students are invited to the Finals Fuel Fest in the King Library’s Food Pantry. Snacks have been donated by the Professional Staff Association and Food Pantry. Also, students are welcome to create a self-care package for finals week and the holiday season. Items include sleep spray, sleep masks, fuzzy socks, tea samplers, motivational stickers, self-care worksheets and study planners.

On Instagram (@CSC.Wellness), students can find links to smart money tips for college students and other budgeting videos produced by Assistant Professor Mike Vogl, to support financial wellness.

On Tuesday, two events will be hosted in the Nelson Physical Activity Center. At 12:15 p.m., a group fitness class, Lunch and Lift, will introduce participants to the use of light weights and basic fitness exercises. At 7 p.m., students and employees are invited to an hour of Zumba, a Latin-style dance fitness class.

Wednesday features three events. At noon, the Residence Life Association will host Pie the Counselors in the Student Center’s Scottsbluff Room. Winners of a trivia-style game about campus counselors will get to pie a counselor in the face.

Gentle Yoga will be offered at 4:30 p.m. in the Student Center’s Scottsbluff Room. Students and employees are welcome to participate in gentle stretching and yoga poses designed to reduce stress. Hot tea will also be provided. Participants can bring mats, but they will be provided. At 7 p.m. in The Hub, RLA will host Holiday Painting Night.

Thursday at 5 p.m., RLA and the King Library will co-host Beautify the Library in The Hub. Students are invited to paint art to be displayed in the library. At 7 p.m., students are welcome to compete for prizes in a Mario Kart Tournament in the Student Center’s Pit.

Students and employees are invited to join a restorative yoga session on Friday at noon in the Sandoz Center.

To close out the Week of Wellness on Saturday, students can create a self-care package at the women’s basketball game at 1 p.m. in the Chicoine Center. Students are encouraged to dress in pajamas in collaboration with the Nest’s Big Chill theme. The men’s game starts at 3 p.m.&nbsp;

Week of Wellness at CSC offers exercise, stress tips, snacks, and more

The Nebraska State Patrol is currently investigating a death of an inmate at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center.

Scotts Bluff County Attorney Dave Eubanks said in Monday press release that an adult male inmate was found unresponsive on Friday at about 6:30 p.m. at the Detention Center.

Officers performed CPR and used an AED in attempts to revive the male, who was transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance.

Medical staff declared the male dead at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Friday.

Eubanks says that because this was an in-custody death, Nebraska law requires a grand jury investigation.

&nbsp;An autopsy took place Monday morning, and the investigation is ongoing.

&nbsp;It is reported that the man was alone in a cell at the time of this occurrence.&nbsp; At this time, authorities say there is no sign of foul play or self-harm.

The man’s identity is withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Inmate found dead at Scotts Bluff Detention Center

A Chadron man was sentenced on Monday to 60 years to life in prison for the death of his infant daughter in 2022.

27-year-old Riley Lenhart was found guilty in October of one count of intentional Child Abuse resulting in death after he was found to kill his 10-month-old daughter via strangulation on June 19, 2022.

Judge Travis O’Gorman on Monday sentenced Lenhart to 60 years to LIFE in prison.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The sentencing was held at the Courthouse in Chadron.

Kiersten Black of Sidney certainly isn’t the only Nebraska teenager to hunt big game this fall. She has, however, harvested an animal in the state that none of the others can claim — a bighorn sheep.

Black, 15, shot the world-class trophy-caliber ram Saturday, Dec. 2, on private land in the Pine Ridge escarpments southwest of Chadron. She won the permit when her name was the only one drawn from a pool of 3,524 applicants in a lottery for Nebraska residents, which requires just a $29 application fee.

Black took to the field Saturday morning with father Trevor, younger brother Reed and family friend Tate Pieper.

They caught sight of the big ram with a group of ewes first thing that morning, but the sheep slipped into the trees and wasn’t spotted again until after about seven hours of searching the area and its steep canyons.

With her father’s coaching, Kiersten made a successful stalk and shot on the huge ram at sundown with just 25 minutes of legal shooting light to spare.

Todd Nordeen, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission research and disease program manager who oversees the state’s bighorn sheep program, said the ram was 10½ years old — in the final stages of an average lifespan of 9-12 years.

Kiersten has developed an impressive hunting resume at a young age. The first of the five deer she has harvested was a whitetail buck with antlers of 150 inches – a size considered a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for most deer hunters. Earlier this year she shot a big mule deer in Colorado.

The teen said the bighorn sheep hunt was a thrilling experience, including the moment she learned her name was drawn.

“I was just so excited. I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

Trevor said he entered Kiersten’s name in the drawing, but made sure she knew of the commitment beforehand.

“You know what you're signing up for if you draw? She said, ‘Oh, yeah, that sounds like fun.’ And here we are.

“You’ll be one of the only people eating bighorn sheep for Christmas dinner this year,” the father told his daughter as they sat near the ram.

Kiersten is a sophomore at Sidney High School. As a convenient coincidence, her Sidney Red Raider basketball team played at Chadron on the eve of the hunt. Had it been any other location, she surely would have sacrificed basketball for the once-in-a-lifetime hunt.

Kiersten’s harvest closes Nebraska’s 2023 season for bighorn sheep, in which just two permits were issued. The other hunter, who won his permit by auction, shot an impressive ram in the Wildcat Hills of Banner County earlier in the week.

The sheep mark the 33rd and 34th harvested in Nebraska since the Game and Parks’ hunting program began in 1998. Kiersten is just the second female and second teenager to harvest one in the state.

The number of Nebraska bighorn sheep permits available each year is based on the state’s population of the species, especially mature rams, as determined during monitoring by Game and Parks staff. To date, permits have been limited to one or two hunters in most years, with several years not permitting any harvests.

Nebraska has developed a reputation for producing trophy-caliber rams for those fortunate to win a permit. Not only do the hunts provide a rare experience and uncommon table fare, they have been vital to bighorn sheep conservation in Nebraska. About $2.5 million has been raised through the lottery applications and auctions to fund research and reintroduction efforts of the species.

Permit winners are assisted by Game and Parks staff and treated to meals and lodging at Fort Robinson State Park.

Nebraska’s reintroduction efforts for bighorn sheep began in the 1980s, an attempt to remedy the unregulated hunting, habitat loss and disease that led to their extirpation from the state in the late 1800s. Nebraska’s population of bighorns stands at approximately more than 250 rams, ewes and lambs in both the Wildcat Hills and Pine Ridge.

Sidney teen bags trophy bighorn

NSP is accredited by CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies), an internationally recognized organization to develop and maintain standards for law enforcement agencies. NSP recently completed its annual review as part of the four-year CALEA accreditation process.

As part of NSP’s commitment to maintaining CALEA standards, NSP seeks the feedback of the public regarding the agency’s quality of service to the state.  <li>The base should be sawed off about one inch above the original cut, and the base placed in a container of water.  Sprinkling or misting the branches and needles will also help retain freshness.&nbsp; </li>
