A plastic bottle could return a couple more times after it leaves the Keep Alliance Beautiful Recycling Center while glass bottles and aluminum cans are able to be recycled endlessly. I take a shorter view, often sharing the volumes that leave the center quarterly. However, a workplace is more than production numbers. This past summer meant transition for our crew (as four people left), now featuring a few new faces. Taking the reins as interim recycling supervisor felt like a fitting progression now over a fortnight since G.O.’s last day, so I decided to accept an offer to fill the position.

October is the start of my 19th quarter at KAB. Initial days on the job meant scurrying from business to business, filling the pickup bed, filling the baler, then repeat from noon until 3 o’clock every afternoon. Writing (in an effort to inform and entertain) was a component as well from the beginning. Every day since has proven part of an ongoing learning process from the latest items we can accept to a more efficient way to unload a trailer.

More than anything, the recycling aspect of our local Keep America Beautiful affiliate is a way to serve the community. Throughout my life it has been a challenge to find a niche where it seems like there is an opportunity to make a difference ranging from not-for-profits like Scouting and Leadership Box Butte to church committees and organizations. KAB, and the people I have been privileged to work alongside, have allowed me to be part of a tangible effort to promote environmental stewardship in Box Butte County and the surrounding area.

Patrons will see little change in our operations in the coming weeks other than our best efforts to keep up with demand at our trailers and business pick ups as we bring new staff up to speed and anticipate adding a couple more people to round out the current crew. Please call if your tote is full and if the trailers we encourage dropoffs at our front door, 107 ½ Cheyenne Ave., during business hours – 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Alliance Public Schools announced on Tuesday that Carlos Palomo has resigned as Head Coach of Alliance Softball after nine seasons.&nbsp;

Alliance Activities Director Michael Baker tells Panhandle Post that Coach Palomo wishes to pursue a master's degree and needs to devote time to that program of study.

"We thank Coach Palomo for all he has done for our softball program the last nine years," a press release by the school said.

Coach Palomo will continue to teach Physical Education at Alliance High School.&nbsp; He will also continue to coach the Alliance Spartans Legion Baseball team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As fall color appears throughout the state, make plans to enjoy it in a different way – at a&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;state park.

Here are some options to explore this month, whether you’re looking for a leisurely drive, a scenic hike or a place to stay overnight.

There’s nothing more relaxing on a fall day than taking a drive through splashes of autumn color, and several&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;state&nbsp;parks&nbsp;provide that opportunity.

Indian Cave State Park, located 10 miles south of Brownville, boasts views of a mature hardwood forest known for putting on a fall show. Many tree species can be found here, such as red oak, ash, black walnut, bur oak and maple, potentially creating panoramas of yellow, orange, red and purple. You may be enticed to park, enjoy a picnic lunch, and hike the 22 miles of scenic trails for a closer look.

Other sites perfect for a fall drive are Fort Robinson State Park in western&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;and Medicine Creek State Recreation Area in the southwestern part of the state. Here, you may find bursts of yellow in the&nbsp;parks’ groves of green ash and cottonwood trees.

Seeing fall color up close on a hiking trail is one of the best ways to experience this season. One state park with opportunities for this is Smith Falls State Park in north-central&nbsp;Nebraska. Several trails wind through this wooded park, where you may find bright red sumac and the yellows of quaking aspens, black walnut and paper birch. Make sure to bring your camera, as Smith Falls is also home to the state’s highest waterfall.

For a touch of history along with fall scenery, visit Rock Creek Station State Historical Park, about 9 miles east of Fairbury. The park has 6 miles of hiking and nature trails winding through beautiful grasses and wooded areas, from which you can view the park’s reconstructed buildings and wagon ruts left by travelers on the Oregon-California Trail. At its peak, fall color here can include the bright reds of smooth sumac and the shades of yellow found in green ash, American elm and cottonwood trees.

Niobrara State Park in northeastern&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;offers a variety of trees on its 14 miles of hiking trails. Enjoy taking in the yellows of cottonwood, green ash, black walnut and basswood, as well as bright red sumac.

After a hike through an autumn wonderland, make a weekend of it and stay overnight to fully soak in your surroundings. Several&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;state&nbsp;parks&nbsp;offer great lodging accommodations as well as fall foliage.

Campers at Chadron State Park in western&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;may be surrounded by the vivid colors of maple trees at the campground. The park also has 22 cabins for rental, which have heating and air conditioning and are furnished with blankets, towels, stoves, refrigerators, silverware and cooking utensils. During your stay, make sure to spend some time enjoying more than 100 miles of beautiful trails, from which you may be able to view green ash and cottonwood trees displaying their yellow fall leaves.

If you’ve got a group, Ponca State Park is a great location, offering 15 mini-lodges with plenty of space and amenities. Other lodging options include cottages, rustic cabins and green cabins constructed from straw bales. Hike the park’s 22 miles of trails to discover the yellows and reds of smooth sumac, cottonwood, elms, black walnut and other species.

Arbor Lodge State Historical Park, located in&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;City, offers another fun option for history lovers. Stay overnight at Arbor Day Farm’s Lied Lodge, then head up the street to this stately park, once the home of J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day. Tour the 52-room mansion, then stroll the surrounding grounds, which are filled with 270 varieties of trees and shrubs, including at least 10 state champion trees, including red maple, American chestnut and black walnut.

Find fall color opportunities at these 9 Nebraska state parks

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture has received a report of a horse in the Panhandle that has contracted West Nile virus (WNV). Horses can become infected with WNV after being bitten by an infected mosquito; however, they cannot transmit WNV to other horses or people after they contract the disease. While many horses can be exposed to the disease and not show symptoms, about 35% will become ill and will have to be potentially euthanized.

Horses that may be infected with West Nile virus may exhibit one or more symptoms that include:

· Weakness (hind end, front or back legs), incoordination

· Cranial nerve deficits (tongue weakness, difficulty swallowing)

There are four WNV vaccines that are licensed through the United States Department of Agriculture to use on horses. If you have not vaccinated your horse or are unsure if your horse has been vaccinated, please contact your local veterinarian. Vaccines have been shown to be the best strategy to help prevent WNV infection in horses.

Although surveillance efforts are taking place, Panhandle residents are urged to continue protecting themselves by following these prevention tips:

· Applying mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus;

· Wearing long-sleeved shirt, pants and socks;

· Avoiding going out at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active;

· Eliminating standing water to reduce mosquito breeding sites

· Keep window screens in good repair, and;

· Use larvicides that contain Bacillus thuringiensis in standing water that is not easily drainable.

Panhandle Horse Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

The new fees will help offset the lost revenue from reducing the quota of nonresident deer, antelope and turkey permits. Money from the fees will be deposited into the Game Cash Fund, which supports the wildlife and fisheries divisions and their research, conservation and management efforts.

Commissioners also approved amendments to sportfishing orders regarding daily bag limits, possession limits, length limits and open areas. They include:

Luke Meduna, big game program manager, presented an update on a completed project that looked at the movements of collared antelope in the Panhandle.

Mike Morava, northwest regional&nbsp;park&nbsp;supervisor, gave an overview of Fort Robinson SP, including a look at visitation and construction projects.

Regional staff also gave an overview of happenings in the Northwest Region, including&nbsp;parks, fisheries, wildlife, and law enforcement.

After being arraigned on Wednesday, Escalera has a preliminary hearing on Oct 24, while sentencing for Possession of Meth charges with Intent to Distribute are on Oct. 27. Escalera pleaded No Contest on that charge.&nbsp;

Chadron- Jerome Kills Small will present a program titled: Water, Lakota Spirituality and Science, Friday, October 20, 2023 at 6:00pm at Chadron Public Library.

This presentation is made possible by Humanities Nebraska, The Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and Chadron Public Library as part of the HN Speakers Bureau.

Living with his grandparents, Kills Small gained personal experience being around Lakota sacred sites in southwestern South Dakota and place names for water in western Nebraska and brings this experience to a discussion of the source and spiritual aspects of water and how what the spirit says and what science says complement each other.

Jerome Kills Small is an Oglala Lakota from Porcupine, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Reservation. A 1997 graduate from the University of South Dakota, with an M.A. in Selected Studies, and retired after 20 years at USD. He taught Lakota Language, American Indian Thought, Siouan Tribal Culture, Early Native American History. He is featured in the book, Wounded Warriors: A Time for Healing, and has a story in the Silver Anniversary Anthology published by the SD Humanities Council. Mr. Kills Small has parts in the videos: Sucker Punched, Nagi Kicopi (Calling Back the Spirit,) Lost Landscapes, and Bones of Contention: Repatriation and Reburial (BBC.) Jerome is a storyteller for public schools, museums, and colleges. Jerome translates, explains, and sings Lakota ceremonial, sweatlodge, powwow, rabbit, round dance, warrior, vision quest, and sundance songs. He sings with the Iron Wing Singers of Wagner, SD. He is a powwow organizer, announcer, arena director, and helps in conducting Lakota ceremonies. He portrayed Tecumseh, a Shawnee Chief and British General. He also portrayed Dr. Charles Alexander Eastman, the first Dakota Medical Doctor. Mr. Kills Small is on the board of Directors for the Native American Advocacy Program, www.lakotanaap.org.

Water, Lakota Spirituality and Science is one of approximately 300 programs offered throughout the Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau. The more than 165 available speakers

Include acclaimed scholars, writers, musicians, story tellers and folklorists on topics ranging from pioneer heritage to ethics and law to international and multicultural issues, making it the largest humanities speakers bureau in the nation.

Speakers are available to any nom-profit organization in Nebraska. Each question - program lasts 30 minutes to an hour, plus a question-and-answer period.

CHADRON – Chadron State College student Kayla Campos kicked off the 2023-24 Dine With Us program with a presentation about her home country of Mexico. Her presentation Tuesday covered the geography, history, traditions, and economy of Mexico.

The lunch series will feature presentations by members of the International Club. The public presentations will take place in the Student Center from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Campos said Mexico is the third largest Latin country after Brazil and Argentina.

“It’s three times the size of Texas and incorporates 31 socially and physically diverse states,” Campos said.

She talked about the history of Mexico, its civilizations, and how it was colonized by Spanish Conquistadors. She explains that the Spanish gained control of Mexico, built a new capital, and forced their religion on the native people. She displayed the Mexican flag and explained the significance and legend behind it.

She also mentioned Mexico’s historic wars and their results. An example she gave was the Mexican American dispute that led to Mexico relinquishing California, Texas, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Colorado.

Campos shared the background of holidays like Cinco de Mayo, Dia de la Raza or Race Day on Oct. 12, and Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead on Nov. 1 and 2. She also explained sports like bullfighting and soccer, as well as the traditional coming-of-age party for young women called quinceañera.

She closed her presentation explaining that the Mexican economy depends on trade, transportation, finance, and government.

“Mexico is one of the world’s leading producers of vanilla and silver and is known for its low labor cost and less stringent environmental regulations,” Campos said.

Upcoming events include a presentation about Nigeria on Oct. 24 by Sophia Oladimeji and Kosiso Akwanamnye and a speech about Guatemala on Nov. 28 by 

. Gabriella Pruitt Santos and Julio Santos. The series will continue during the Spring 2024 semester, as well.

Chadron Public Library Foundation receives Grant to upgrade library

October is American Pharmacists Month and Pharmacist Dave Randolph of Dave’s Pharmacy in Alliance and Hemingford in Box Butte County has been recognized by several national organizations for national awards. &nbsp;

Randolph was recognized as among the top 10 pharmacists in the country among over 300,000 in SingleCare’s fifth annual Best of the Best Pharmacy awards.&nbsp; Randolph says he has been amazed by the community support. 

"Honestly, I'm overwhelmed by it," Randolph said.&nbsp; "It's great to be appreciated by anybody, especially when it's your patients that nominate you and help you get the award," Randolph said.

Randolph credits his staff for their role in the recognition, saying that his staff his amazing for all of the work they do.

"I've got a great group of pharmacists, Jada and Amanda who are amazing; my technicians are wonderful in both Hemingford and Alliance, my delivery drivers are great too," Randolph said. 

"Can't forget about my manager Mikayla and also my wife Blanch who helps out on the business side and lets me do the things out front that needs to be done."

Randolph was also recognized by the Nebraska Pharmacist’s Association as a recipient of their Bowl of Hygeia Award, which&nbsp;praised his innovative approach and bringing many services like test-to-treat and point of care testing and more.&nbsp;

OMAHA, NE&nbsp;–&nbsp;Today, (Thursday) U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE), a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, joined&nbsp;fourteen of his Senate colleagues&nbsp;to&nbsp;demand answers from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on U.S. action to hold Iran accountable for multiple violations&nbsp;to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) Iran agreed to with the Obama Administration.

The letter was led by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and follows&nbsp;reports&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us-says-iran-must-take-nuclear-steps-make-room-diplomacy-2023-09-26/" target="_blank">Iran&nbsp;has&nbsp;not complied&nbsp;with&nbsp;the terms of&nbsp;the agreement</a>.&nbsp;In 2015, the JCPOA was signed by the Obama Administration, Iran, and other countries agreeing to place restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. One condition&nbsp;of&nbsp;the JCPOA&nbsp;included&nbsp;tasking the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure the regime in Tehran adheres to nuclear restrictions. Even with the signed agreement, Iran&nbsp;has&nbsp;proven&nbsp;to be non-compliant&nbsp;as it&nbsp;continues&nbsp;its&nbsp;nuclear&nbsp;enrichment&nbsp;programs.

“The Iranian regime is intent on fomenting terror across the region, as evidenced by its proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah’s, brutal attacks this weekend on our ally, Israel,”&nbsp;the senators wrote. “Now more than ever, you must ensure that you hold the regime accountable for its failure to comply with obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Further, we were disappointed that the administration did not call for a formal censure of Tehran given its continued non-compliance with the IAEA. The Biden Administration has failed to press for concrete action against Iran in Vienna. We are especially disturbed by reports that the United States led efforts to oppose a censure of Iran. As Iran violates its commitments and refuses to comply with the IAEA, your business-as-usual approach to resolving the situation is tantamount to an endorsement of the Iranian regime’s activities.”
