Chadron State Park to host 'Celebrate Wildflower Week'

LINCOLN, NEB. — The Nebraska State Patrol arrested multiple people during incidents at the Nebraska State Capitol Building during legislative debate on Friday afternoon.

During the legislative debate, at approximately 2:40 p.m., multiple observers in the opponent balcony began yelling. Two individuals threw objects over the balcony onto the legislative floor. Those individuals, Lucia Salinas, 24, of Omaha, and Maghie Miller-Jenkins, 36, of Lincoln, were arrested for obstructing a government operation and disturbing the peace. Another individual was yelling repeatedly and refused law enforcement orders to leave the balcony. That individual, identified as Mar Lee, 25, of Lincoln, was arrested for disturbing the peace and trespassing.&nbsp;

The legislature’s presiding officer, Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly, order that the balconies be cleared for the remainder of the debate. On the proponent balcony, a woman refused to leave. Troopers gave repeated orders to vacate the balcony, but the woman did not comply. Danna Seevers, 56, of Seward, was arrested for disobeying a lawful order.

At approximately 3:25 p.m., a trooper observed a person intentionally preventing a legislative Sgt. At Arms from opening a door in the rear of the legislative chamber. The trooper told the man to leave the area. The man was non-compliant. The trooper then ordered the man to vacate the capitol. The man again refused to comply. The trooper attempted to place the man under arrest and the subject resisted. Another trooper arrived to assist taking the subject into custody. The man, Benjamin Buras, 40, of Lincoln, was arrested for resisting arrest and trespassing.

As troopers were attempting to take Buras into custody, a woman approached and tried to push past another trooper. The trooper held her back, at which time the woman punched the trooper in the chest. She was immediately taken into custody. Sara Crawford, 33, of Lincoln, was arrested for obstructing a peace officer.

All six were lodged in Lancaster County Jail.

From our southern border to our own backyard, law enforcement are essential to our safety and security. These courageous women and men in blue make the Good Life we enjoy in Nebraska&nbsp;possible. They put their lives on the line to enforce our laws and keep our streets safe. As we celebrate National Police Week this week, let us recognize the service of those who chose a job that requires the utmost integrity.&nbsp;

While other states attempt to defund the police, Nebraskans respect and support the women and men in blue. When I was governor, I signed into law several pieces of legislation to make good on our commitment to law enforcement. We offered incentives to increase the ability of local agencies to recruit and retain officers. We spent $47.7 million to expand the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island to ensure that officers receive training that adheres to the highest possible standards. We&nbsp;also&nbsp;invested $16.9 million to upgrade our State Patrol Crime Laboratory to better process evidence to solve crimes.

I am particularly grateful for the work Nebraska law enforcement officers do in keeping deadly drugs like fentanyl off our streets. While the drug situation at our nation’s southern border has gone from crisis to catastrophe, the Nebraska State Patrol has stepped up. In my last year as governor, troopers confiscated two times as much methamphetamine, three times as much fentanyl, and ten times as much cocaine as just two years prior.&nbsp;In 2019, Nebraska law enforcement confiscated 46 pills. In the first six months of 2021, that number had grown to 151,000 pills confiscated.

As Senator, I am fighting to ensure our federal government also backs the blue. Recently, I co-sponsored Senator John Cornyn’s (R-TX) Back the Blue Act to increase penalties for criminals who target law enforcement officers and provide new tools for officers to protect themselves. It also creates new federal crimes for assaulting a federally-funded law enforcement officer and for fleeing justice across state lines to avoid prosecution. Finally, it protects the self-defense and Second Amendment rights of law enforcement officers in more federal facilities. That’s why the bill is supported by the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO), and the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA). Congress should pass this common-sense legislation without delay.

Another way to support our law enforcement is to oppose laws that restrict their ability to do their jobs with excellence. I recently voted to block two different laws passed by Washington, D.C.’s City Council that would hinder law enforcement’s ability to respond to the violent crime that is out of control in our nation’s capital city. Our Constitution gives Congress oversight authority over Washington, D.C. in recognition of the fact that D.C. belongs to the entire nation. Congress has a responsibility to act when the City Council puts anti-cop, soft-on-crime policies above the safety of the people who live, work, and do business there. I was proud to join a bipartisan group of lawmakers in voting to block these laws and will continue to push back on efforts to undermine the good work police officers do everyday.

As a husband and father, I am grateful to each and every law enforcement officer working to protect Nebraskans and Americans. Their bravery should not go unnoticed. We need to back the blue. United States Attorney Steven Russell announced that Gabriela Navarrete, 44, of Minden, Nebraska, was sentenced today in Lincoln, Nebraska, by Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard for misuse of a social security number. Navarrete was sentenced to time served and will serve 3 years on supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

On November 16, 2017, Gabriela Navarrete filled out and signed a Form I-9 in order to begin employment at Casey’s General Store in Nebraska. On the Form I-9, she filled in the blanks for “U.S. Social Security Number” with a social security number that did not belong to her. As verification of the information provided on the Form I-9, Navarrete provided a Social Security Card bearing her name and the specific social security number (SSN).

Navarrete knew that SSN had not been assigned to her by the Commissioner of Social Security. She provided that SSN with the intention to deceive Casey’s General Store into believing that number was assigned to her. Navarrete made that false representation to satisfy Section 274A(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

This case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations.

Little Saplings program presents&nbsp;Dandelions

Adults looking to explore the outdoors with their young children are invited to Little Saplings, a monthly early childhood nature discovery program at Schramm Education Center near Gretna.

The 2023 series continues June 7 with the theme Dandelions at 9 a.m. It is designed for children ages 2-5 and their adult caregiver. The cost is $4 per child and $5 per adult per program and includes admission to the Education Center after the program.

Homeschool Hike set for June 21-22 at Schramm Park SRA UPDATED

Homeschool families are invited to join an outdoor educator on a guided hike to learn about pollinators at Schramm Park State Recreation Area near Gretna during the Homeschool Hikes program at 9 a.m. June 21 and 2 p.m. June 22.

Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared toward homeschool families.

Celebrate Nebraska Wildflower week with a Wildflower Outing at the Wildcat Hills at 7 p.m. June 9.

Uncover many of the flowers in bloom at Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area and discover key characteristics for identifying. Bring water and hiking shoes for this mile-long hike over uneven terrain. The hike meets at the Nature Center.

Pollinator Party hosted by Schramm Education Center

To celebrate Nebraska Pollinator Week, the Schramm Education Center will host a Pollinator Party on June 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

See live honeybees, bumblebees, and other live insects at this family event. Help survey the Schramm prairie for insects and plants in a prairie bioblitz. There will be crafts, games, a plant sale, food and much more.

Participation in the event is free, but regular admission costs will apply for any visitors wishing to explore the Education Center. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot.

The Nebraska Star Party group will sponsor a Star Gazing Party for the public at dusk June 23 at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park.

Powerful telescopes will be set up near the park’s golf shack for a glimpse of the night sky. Bring camp chairs or blankets. This event is free and viewing equipment will be provided. Rain dates are the next day or following Saturday.

Pre-party naturalist programs, with astronomy-related activities, will be held at the picnic area in front of Owen Marina from 3-4:30 p.m.

Two Rivers State Recreation Area will host nature programs 10 a.m.-noon and 12:30-2 p.m. June 17.

Join naturalists at the picnic shelter just north of lakeside campground. Discover tracks, pelts, skulls and more things to explore. Meet a live animal and learn about some of favorite Nebraska species that can be found at the SRA.

Prepare to get dirty for Mud Pie Mornings at Schramm Park State Recreation Area on June 2 and 29.

Meet at 9 a.m. by the Schramm Education Center side entrance, then go on an ingredient-seeking hike.&nbsp; Next, naturalists and participants will squish through a mud-pie recipe, all while learning about soil composition.

Summer programs scheduled at Venture Parks

Venture Park programs for the public are scheduled at Schramm Park State Recreation Area, Platte River SP, Eugene T. Mahoney SP and Louisville SRA from June 1-Aug. 15.

Topics include reptiles, wildflowers, mammals, birding and more. Youth must be accompanied by an adult.

My road trip didn't take me far this week—barely to the end of town.&nbsp;

 And following thiis stellar trip, i wouldn't be leaving my house for a week.You see, I have a zillion fruit trees in my backyard.&nbsp; (OK, fine..13.&nbsp; Smells like a zillion.) And I also have asthma, allergies and COPD issues that all put together makes life miserable from time to time.&nbsp; I had managed to avoid completely breaking down the last two years, but this was the year to do it.&nbsp; The blossoms didn't get frozen from the last spring storm, and they were tormenting me terribly. I'm sure many other folks have been suffering as well.

After spending a few hours debating if I was feeling bad enough to go to the ER--and knowing i wouldn't be able to see my own doc-- I decided I'd best get going.&nbsp; I couldn't breathe, and was lacking color—neither of&nbsp;which are really acceptable to have a good day, or life.

&nbsp;So my road trip this week took me to the BBGH Emergency Room...not quite what I had hoped to write about.&nbsp; But that whole lack of breathing thing was bothersome, not to mention scary. This is the worst attack I have ever had. I thought i might bite the big one.

But lucky for me, ER Nurse Kate Horton was on duty. She whisked me away and had an IV in my arm before i could even think to say "Ow". She was determined to get things going the right way fast.

Kate and I have known each other for a few years, but it seems that over the last year we have spent a lot of quality time in the ER together. When I had my spinal surgeries i had to go twice a day to visit Kate to get the infusions that would end the MERSA issue. She was always a joy to be around. We all know I'm kind of a dork. So it's fun to have someone that will laugh with you, no matter the circumstances!

This trip was no exception; we laughed and she got me going again. Her concern was overwhelming.&nbsp; I'm sure she could tell I&nbsp; was terrified; she did everything she could think of and made sure things were right, and went right.&nbsp; She and Dr. Ott worked together to get me breathing better. So I appreciate her so very much, for being my road trip this week, and putting up with a sickly, barely breathing dork, who is very grateful. If you happen to find yourself heading that way, I hope you get Kate! She's amazing.

Road Trip: Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance

On May 17 at approximately 2:47 p.m. Scottsbluff Police Officers responded to a report of an in progress protection order violation in the area of Ave X in Scottsbluff. 

 The suspect was reported to be 35-year-old Scottsbluff resident, Joshua Larez, who was driving a 2004 Black Honda Accord.

  Larez was also needed for questioning for multiple protection order violation investigations. Recently, he has continually left the area after allegedly violating the  order and has been unable to be contacted.

 Responding Officers located the vehicle driven by Larez in the area of Five Rocks and Stable Club Road. 

 Scottsbluff Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop with Larez who then fled the area south bound in his vehicle on Five Rocks.   Scottsbluff Officers pursued the vehicle, attempting to apprehend Larez as he traveled south into Gering on Five Rock’s Road.

"As Larez was attempting to flee Police, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed just south of the intersection of Five Rocks and D Street in Gering," Scottsbluff&nbsp;Patrol Sgt. Andrew Soucie said. "Larez’ vehicle overturned and rolled off the roadway landing right side up in the ally next to Five Rocks causing damage to the roadside barrier cables."

Larez was the only occupant of the vehicle.

"Larez then fled from the vehicle on foot.  Scottsbluff officers were assisted by the Gering Police Department and the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office," Soucie said. "Agencies were able to apprehend Larez in a nearby residence after it was determined he had entered into a nearby resident’s garage in an attempt to hide."

Larez was transported to the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff to receive care for his injuries. 

 Charges are pending in regards to multiple protection order violations, flight to avoid arrest, possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl, willful reckless driving, leaving the scene of an injury accident, possession of drug paraphernalia and other traffic related offences.&nbsp;

The generators will supply power along 3rd street from Hwy 385 east to Flack Avenue. Some essential businesses will have power; however, everyone should prepare to be without power from 1:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.

As a result of this outage water towers and pumps will also be without power; we advise citizens to conserve water to ensure adequate fire protection.

This outage is to install new hardware on the switch that feeds the City of Alliance, and is essential for the long term health of the system.

"It's going to be the first type of event that we've had out there," Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Adam Pittman said. "International Water Safety Day was just a few days ago; it was actually on the 15th. We wanted to try to get involved in the community and try to do some safety aspects. Christians Cause is going to be down and do some kayaking safety and fitting of life jackets. We've got some life jackets to give away this year, they're going to have some games, there's a free will donation meal that's going to be provided by Bridgeport Ethanol and Susan Batterman of Country Catering.&nbsp; Nebraska Game and Parks will be out there and try to talk about some boater safety, and what kids need to do and cover some of the laws. The whole idea behind this for us was to try to save the next life. If we can prevent and save one person, it's worth it for us." Every year lives are lost on Nebraska waterways in boating accidents. "I don't know what the percentage is, but it's pretty high," Pittman said. "Every accident that I've been into, there's been a way that could have possibly prevented the outcome. Expect moderate to unhealthy air quality into Friday due to smoke in Canada

Over the last three months we've seen several news stories about migrant child labor in the United States. What, exactly, is happening?

Last winter the Department of Homeland Security investigated the JBS Food Slaughterhouse and PSSI, Packers Sanitation Services, Inc. As many as 50 migrant children, some as young as 13, were employed cleaning the slaughterhouse at night, most in Grand Island. Yes, in Nebraska. PSSI argued that they were given fake identification with Social Security numbers that were verified by the federal government’s E-Verify system. Not their fault they were violating child labor laws.

The children who worked for PSSI attended school during the day and worked overnight at the JBS slaughterhouse. Conditions they faced included cleaning dangerous equipment, using strong cleaning chemicals that burned them, and navigating slick "kill floors". They had to wear protective equipment from head to toe, including hard hats, face shields, goggles, aprons, gloves, boots, etc.

The United States currently has an unemployment rate of 3.4%, and Nebraska's is 2.1%. This may sound great, but it has problems. Economists generally consider a healthy unemployment rate to be 4-5%. When the rate drops too low, it becomes difficult to hire people who will actually be productive employees. And a business's current employees are more likely to move to a better, higher paying job.

What does this have to do with migrant children? Over the past two years, more than 250,000 migrant children have come alone to the United States. Most of these children are escaping dangerous situations in Central America or Venezuela. Some are sent here to earn money to send back to families living in deep poverty. Some are trying to find relatives who moved to the United States years ago.

The federal Department of Health and Human Services is required to house unaccompanied children until they can be placed with sponsors. Typically, these sponsors are family members who are vetted to see if they are good placements - aunts and uncles, grandparents, cousins. However, because of the surge at the southern border, the government has relaxed sponsorship requirements.

Now the abuses begin. Relatives who are, shall we say, only loosely connected to children they've never met see an opportunity to have another income in their household. Businesses needing laborers appear to claim connections. Fake IDs abound, and dates of birth and Social Security numbers are falsified.

In February, the New York Times investigative reporters published some shocking stories, and other news outlets have followed up and verified their findings. Many of these migrant children, some as young as age 12, are working for some of the biggest corporations in the country, throughout the United States.

Children were working construction jobs. They ran saws, they roofed houses, they moved rocks. They were working assembly lines in factories at night. They made auto parts. They bagged cereal or dog food. They ran milking machines at dairies. They washed dishes at night. They washed sheets in hotel laundries. They operated sewing machines. They ran ovens in bakeries. They deboned chickens.

How are we reacting to this abuse of poor migrant children? Apparently corporate profits are more important than common human decency. Several states have introduced legislation to roll back these protections of our most vulnerable workers. Because we need the cheap labor.

Getting Ahead: Migrant child labor

Nebraska Public Power District will have planned outages next week of varying times for rural customers along highway 87, between Rushville and Whiteclay. The outages are being observed so crews can safely perform maintenance on the powerlines in this area.

There will be outages on Monday, May 22 and Friday, May 26 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. impacting customers in the area between 330th&nbsp;Lane and 610 Road near Rushville to the intersection of Highway 87 and 776th&nbsp;Trail near Whiteclay.

There will be some additional longer outages for two sections of customers within this area. Customers in the area of 330th&nbsp;Lane and 610 Road to 650&nbsp;Road and Highway 87 will experience an outage from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday May 22,&nbsp;and Tuesday, May 23.

Customers in the area of Scott road and Highway 87 north to the intersection of 776 Trail and Highway 87 will experience an outage from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24 and Thursday, May 25.

NPPD will be reaching out by phone to customers who will impacted by an outage.

During National Safe Boating Week, May 20-26, Nebraska Game and Parks reminds boaters to brush up on safety rules in preparation for peak boating season.

Follow these 10 tips reduce the risk of incidents and help ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the water.

Take a boater safety course&nbsp;— Though it’s only a legal requirement for those born after Dec. 31, 1985, consider completing the Nebraska boating safety course to learn the top things you need to know about navigating Nebraska waters, what to do in an emergency and more. Find an in-person or online class at OutdoorNebraska.gov; search for “boater education.”

Check equipment&nbsp;— Before you launch, ensure your boat or kayak is in good running condition and all essential equipment is present, including a life jacket for every person on board. Paddlers of kayaks or canoes also should physically inspect their planned take-out point to make sure it is accessible.

Tell someone your plans&nbsp;— Before leaving home, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. Consider carrying a cellphone in a waterproof pouch, as well, in case an emergency occurs.

Wear a life jacket&nbsp;— Make your life jacket a statement piece and wear it, as it does no good stowed away if an emergency occurs. Children under age 13, those using personal watercraft and those being towed on skis or similar device must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device; it’s required by the law.

Be wary of surroundings&nbsp;— According to the National Safe Boating Council, nearly a quarter of all reported boating accidents in 2021 were caused by operator inattention or improper look-out. Pay attention to other boats, personal watercraft, swimmers, stumps and other hazards. Speeds in excess of 5 mph are prohibited if within 30 yards of any other vessel, swimming area or dock. If padding a kayak or canoe, be aware of possible debris below the surface or under bridges.

Have all required safety equipment&nbsp;— Life jackets, throw cushions, fire extinguishers and bailing devices are required on most boats. An engine-cut-off device or switch also is a good idea.

Avoid alcohol&nbsp;— Nearly one-third of all recreational boating fatalities occur when someone is Boating Under the Influence, a criminal violation enforced in Nebraska. Always designate a sober driver.

Watch the weather&nbsp;— Storms can pop up quickly in Nebraska. Check the weather in advance and monitor it during the day, if necessary.

Avoid hypothermia&nbsp;— Even though temperatures are rising, the water still can be cold. Hypothermia is caused by exposure to cold weather or water. Take caution to prevent hypothermia.

Keep it legal&nbsp;— Make sure you’ve registered your boat and, if a nonresident, purchased an Aquatic Invasive Species stamp at OutdoorNebraska.gov. Also remember anyone operating a motorboat or personal watercraft in Nebraska must be at least 14 years of age. LINCOLN — A grassroots effort to save the crumbling Virginia birthplace of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather appears to have succeeded.

A Virginia realtor, Katherine Solenberger, has purchased the house to spare it from demolition, and she intends to donate it to a nonprofit within a year or so, according to Ashley Olson, executive director of the National Willa Cather Center in Red Cloud, Nebraska.

The organization had been seeking donations and benefactors to save the structure&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/04/07/cather-official-hopes-deteriorating-birthplace-of-famed-author-can-be-saved/">after it was announced last month</a>&nbsp;that the home, and surrounding acreage, was going up for sale.

Olson said publicity about the impending sale generated more than $30,000 in donations toward a purchase, as well as the offer by the local realtor.

“We are looking forward to working with a nonprofit collaborator to deploy these funds for the stabilization and preservation effort,” Olson said Tuesday.

“In Cather’s sesquicentennial year, it is wonderful to see her legacy embraced in Virginia,” she added.

Cather was born Dec. 7, 1873, in the white,&nbsp;clapboard home that sits along a turnpike near Gore, Virginia.

But the home, which has been vacant since the 1970s, has fallen into disrepair in recent years. It has been deemed unsafe for visitors because of its broken windows, rusty metal roofing and sagging front porch.

Olson said the Cather organization was connected with Solenberger via local Cather fans and members of the author’s family who live in the area.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/willa-cathers-150-years-to-be-celebrated-throughout-2023/">series of events is planned this year</a>&nbsp;to celebration the 150th anniversary of Cather’s birth.

Announcing the arrival of Vibrant Voracity by Carolyn Albracht. Dr. Carolyn is Assistant Professor of Art Education in the department of Art and Design at Wayne State College. She is also owner and director of Blue Cat Gallery &amp; Studio in downtown Wayne, NE. She formerly owned and operated L’eglise Art Center &amp; Gallery in Aurora, NE and taught K-12 art at Hampton Public School in Hampton, NE. Carolyn also served as the Visual Arts Coordinator for the Fall Arts &amp; Music Festival in Aurora from 2004-2007, and served on the Fine Arts Board of the Hamilton Community Foundation for ten years.

She has been a member of the Nebraska Art Teachers Association since 2008, serving as the organization’s secretary since 2016, and also served as the 2014 Fall Conference Chair in Aurora. Carolyn studied Studio Art and Psychology at the University of Nebraska at Kearney where she earned her BA in 1999. She continued her studies at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, receiving an MA in Museum Studies in 2003. She completed a K-12 Art Education teaching endorsement in 2009. And finally, she earned her PhD in Education Studies at UNL in August 2016. Carolyn’s personal artistic and teaching philosophy includes the idea that the arts are a necessity and not a luxury, and so she strives to make the visual arts as accessible as possible to people in her corner of the world.

ARTIST STATEMENT: My current works are created with watercolor and Prismacolor markers, a combination I stumbled upon several years ago when I first created a series of drawings done solely with Prismacolor markers. I found that the markers were transparent, as were the watercolors, and together I could create layered images that were much more visually appealing to me than using the markers alone. I enjoy the accidental quality of creating different effects with the watercolors, and the addition of the very controlled and deliberate marking of the Prismacolors to create finished images. The mediums together reflect my interest in contrast and contradiction, and the layered effect reflects my view of life and the world around me as it communicates ideas of interconnection.

More recently I have been adding other media to my paintings, such as embroidery thread, acrylic paint, and collage elements, adding more visual appeal and adding to the intended communication of layers as metaphor for my world view. Many of my compositions are culled from imagery I create intuitively while doodling and listening to music. I have filled doodle books off and on since I began teaching formally in 2009. When I sit down to create a doodle, I try not to consciously direct the images that spill forth from my pens. In this way, I view them as a kind of creative temperature-taking. Those that seem to have a strong composition and aesthetically pleasing imagery suggest that my mind is in an optimal place for creative mark-making, while others that are not so pleasing suggest to me that my creative mind is temporarily being pushed aside while I focus on other aspects of life. In a sense, the practice of creating these doodles reflects a striving for balance, which I hope is conveyed in the finished mixed-media watercolor paintings I create.

Carolyn’s personal artistic and teaching philosophy includes the idea that the arts are a necessity and not a luxury, and so she strives to make the visual arts as accessible as possible to people in her corner of the world.ARTIST STATEMENT: My current works are created with watercolor and Prismacolor markers, a combination I stumbled upon several years ago when I first created a series of drawings done solely with Prismacolor markers. I found that the markers were transparent, as were the watercolors, and together I could create layered images that were much more visually appealing to me than using the markers alone. I enjoy the accidental quality of creating different effects with the watercolors, and the addition of the very controlled and deliberate marking of the Prismacolors to create finished images. The mediums together reflect my interest in contrast and contradiction, and the layered effect reflects my view of life and the world around me as it communicates ideas of interconnection.More recently I have been adding other media to my paintings, such as embroidery thread, acrylic paint, and collage elements, adding more visual appeal and adding to the intended communication of layers as metaphor for my world view. Many of my compositions are culled from imagery I create intuitively while doodling and listening to music. I have filled doodle books off and on since I began teaching formally in 2009. When I sit down to create a doodle, I try not to consciously direct the images that spill forth from my pens. In this way, I view them as a kind of creative temperature-taking. Those that seem to have a strong composition and aesthetically pleasing imagery suggest that my mind is in an optimal place for creative mark-making, while others that are not so pleasing suggest to me that my creative mind is temporarily being pushed aside while I focus on other aspects of life. In a sense, the practice of creating these doodles reflects a striving for balance, which I hope is conveyed in the finished mixed-media watercolor paintings I create.As always, we want to thank the incredible local businesses that support arts opportunities for our community. Carnegie Arts Center welcomes 'Vibrant Voracity' by Carolyn Albracht 

A fundraiser event will be held May 21 for Ross Grant at Alliance Eagles Club.

Grant was involved in a car accident March 19. He is currently ongoing treatments in a local hospital.&nbsp;

"We are trying to keep costs down low so that Ross will benefit 100% of the funds," Event member Cheryl Johnson said. "He has a long road ahead of him with many medical expenses ahead."

Donations are currently being accepted and all proceeds will benefit the Grant family.&nbsp;

Grant and his family have been Alliance residents for a long time. He currently is employed as the City of Alliance&nbsp;Public Works Superintendent.&nbsp;
