GERING, Neb. (AP) — A wildfire that has forced evacuations and destroyed some homes in the Nebraska Panhandle grew to about 25 square miles (65 square kilometers) Monday, but firefighters were managing to limit the spread of the fire.

The blaze south of Gering, dubbed the Carter Canyon Fire, was reported Saturday evening and began as two separate fires in heavily treed areas of the Cedar Canyon Wildlife Management Area and Carter Canyon Public Land, fire and emergency management officials said.

Officials said tinder-dry conditions, rough terrain and 20 mph (32 kph) winds hampered efforts to control the fires, which merged over the weekend into one fire.

The fire had grown to about 25 square miles (65 square kilometers) and was burning in an area of grassland and large trees, said Ben Bohall, public information officer with the Nebraska Forest Service.

The fire destroyed three homes and damaged several more in the Carter Canyon community that was evacuated Sunday. No injuries were immediately reported.

About 200 people were fighting the fire, with crews from Wyoming and South Dakota helping those from Nebraska, Bohall said. About 35 fire departments from the area and aircraft were brought in to battle the flames.

By Monday, the fire was about 33% contained and wasn't spreading significantly, officials said.

Fire crews will face difficult conditions as they try to control the blaze in the coming days. The National Weather Service forecasts continued winds and temperatures around or in excess of 100 degrees over the next six days, with only a 20% to 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday.

The fire in an area suffering from moderate to severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The Nebraska fire was burning at a time when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wildfires-forests-california-fires-mckinney-ddb688b14e08de4f8f3a7fe8e2634a2c">other large fires</a>&nbsp;were raging in the West, including a Northern California fire that has burned through nearly 87 square miles (225.33 square kilometers) in the Klamath National Forest. Another fire has grown to about 20 square miles (51.80 square kilometers) in the Flathead Indian Reservation in northwestern Montana and Idaho's Moose Fire has burned more than 85 square miles (220.15 square kilometers).

Auditions will be held Saturday, August 6 starting at 10 a.m. in the Judy Chaloupka Theater on WNCC's Scottsbluff Campus. All actors must be 18 or older, and comfortable with measurement of vital signs and simple, non-invasive medical procedures.&nbsp;These are paid positions and a background check is required.

The simulations will aid WNCC&nbsp;nursing students in gaining real-life experience in a controlled environment. If chosen, actors will attend training sessions in September to prepare for the simulations.&nbsp;

Ten years ago, on Aug. 28 2012, Camp Norwesca and Chadron State Park were devastated&nbsp;by the West Ash Fire. 

At Camp Norwesca, 32 of the 40 acres on the property suffered significant fire and smoke damage. 

We continue to rebuild from the ashes and this year we will remember our history of where we have been, where we are now and our future plans.

The 59th Annual Peabody Hale Fiddle Contest was held on Saturday, July 30 at the Crawford City Park. 

  The park was filled with sounds of horseshoes, music and smells of good food. 

  This year we did an open gate with a freewill donation and the spectators were great in supporting us. 

  The trophy donators this year were for the Fiddle Trophies – The Family of Dora and Ellis “Peabody” Hale. 

 The Vocal and Miscellaneous Trophies were donated by Betty Moffatt.

  The Horseshoe Trophies were donated by Frank Richardson. 

    Our Master of Ceremonies and Entertainment for the day was provided by Renae and Jack Jones of the “Boots and Saddles Band”. 

  We had 25 contestants from Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado,  the youngest being 7 and the oldest 86.

At its July 19 meeting, the Alliance City Council approved an amendment of a fireworks ordinance on first reading.

This ordinance would amend the dates and times fireworks can be legally discharged in the city.

"I'm the one that asked to have this put on the agenda," Councilwoman Annora Bentley said. "Because of the amount of people that have been asking me since I've been on council, why we have fireworks in June, why we cannot reduce the number of days to just July, which I think is a nice compromise. They're tired of the noise. They are tired of what it does to their children, their pets; it's a myriad of things. And they're tired of cleaning up the debris in their yard for ten days. And so I would like council to discuss maybe taking it down to July 1 through the fourth as a compromise for the both sides. I did out of due diligence, I have been asking several people that have approached me in the past, new people that have not said anything to me about what their thoughts are on it. I have not come up with one person that has asked me to leave it as it is. They were in favor of being one through four. And I did ask them one thing that I thought maybe would concern you...if they would spend more money if they had more days. And every one of them told me that they only had a certain amount of money allotted. Whether, they spent it in four days, or whether they spent it in ten, they would spend the exact same amount that they had budgeted for it."

Councilman John McGhehey said he has heard some of the public comments about noise as well.

"I think cutting it from ten days to four days is a pretty drastic change considering how many people look forward to it," McGhehey said. "And obviously, a lot of people look forward to the fireworks based on the amount of fireworks that we hear every year. And so I think getting it down to four days is just too much. I'd be open to maybe a change from 10 days, which is what the Nebraska statute allows. But looking around the area, you know, we would certainly be an outlier if we cut that down as far as four days compared to communities in our area."

Alliance Mayor Mike Dafney said he's asked around the community too.

"I haven't had one person tell me not to cut it because that was too long. I told them that it was on the agenda, it was four days and everybody I talked to thought is was great. I agree with I think four days in July."

Councilman Earl Jones also agreed with the ordinance being changed to four days. McGheyhey doesn't agree.

"There's groups that use it as fundraisers, and I don't agree that people are going to spend the same amount of money, because I think some people go back and forth...and over and over again, and maybe kind of forget how much they spend," McGheyhey said. "I think that argument doesn't work too much with me that they're going to spend the same amount of money in four days that they would over ten. I think starting as early as June 24, might be too early. I would be open to a compromise of maybe seven days."

Mayor Dafney has heard that there has been firework debris on houses, tops of cars, in backyards, etc. He said some damage has been done.

"I did have several requests of just having them on July 4," Bentley said. " And it was my idea of saying there are people that do enjoy fireworks; you don't, but some people do. So that's why I thought July 1 to the fourth was a reasonable compromise and they were accepting of that. My neighbor did have two small fires in her backyard from fireworks. You know, we're in the middle of a drought as well. I mean, I think we have to be very cognizant of all of those things."

The Alliance City Council will revisit amending the fireworks ordinance two additional times during future meetings.

All Alliance City Council meetings are open to the public. The next meeting is Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at the Alliance Public Library meeting room.

The City of Chadron is announcing that the water restrictions issued earlier today have been lifted. 

 We want to thank the citizens for their patience and cooperation.&nbsp;

The City of Chadron is issuing a water restriction from today from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. or until further notice. 

To maintain an adequate amount of water for the entire town during this time period we will be asking the citizens to minimize their water usage including watering of lawns, washing cars, anything that is non- mandatory.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is closing several areas in the Panhandle southwest of Gering to help firefighters battling wildfires.

Cedar Canyon Wildlife Management Area, Montz Point WMA, and Carter Canyon and Montz Point, both part of Platte River Basin Environments,&nbsp;are closed so firefighters are not hindered by vehicle traffic.

These areas are closed to all public access. 

The public is asked to stay away as area residents may be using the roads to evacuate personal belongings or move livestock to safety.

The Alliance, Chadron, Hemingford, Bridgeport and other Panhandle Volunteer Fire Departments are assisting with these wildfires.&nbsp;
