ALLIANCE, Neb. - Community members in Alliance and surrounding towns came together at the Westside Event Center on Monday evening for the first ever Big Idea event in Box Butte County. At this community event, local entrepreneurs pitched their ideas about improving their local business opportunities. Business plans for affordable bathroom repair, an intimate restaurant with rotating chefs, a members-only bottle club, a laser and engraving business expansion and a de-icing company were presented in front of an excited group of Box Butte County citizens.

Daniel Curtis, Tory McVicker, Tammy &amp; Gary Griffee,&nbsp;Heather Edwards and Patrick Hartman each received five minutes to pitch their 'big idea' for growing a local business. A panel of judges from the Box Butte county area listened to these presentations earnestly, as did over a hundred local community members. After the five pitches were completed, and questions phases occurred for each presenter, the judges met to decide who deserved the prize money. The top prize awarded $10,000 for first place, while second place earned $7,000. An audience vote award saw one presenter earn $500 based on a community vote, in which each person in attendance got to put a vote in for which of the five business ideas they believed in the most.

After the judges made their decision, the winners were announced. The audience vote earned Hartman the $500 for his Liquid De-Icing Fill and Manufacturing Station. Edwards was selected for second prize, earning her Prairie County Crafts Laser &amp; Engraving business $7,000. Finally, the first-place prize selected by the judges panel went to Hartman, who walked out of the Westside Event Center in Alliance with $10,500 in new business funding in total.

With only two of the five presenters leaving with funding provided by the Schmidt Foundation, all five presenters received support and engagement from their fellow community members throughout the night. McVicker's idea to create an intimate 30-seat dining experience set in the prairie, offering weekly rotating guest chefs who craft unique, multi-course menus, sparked interest from the crowd. The chance to have a 'big city' type of restaurant feel in the panhandle of Nebraska was a large selling point of her idea, and many in the audience were seen nodding their head in approval.

Curtis's Budget Bathrooms business idea was met with interested faces as well. His focus of bringing affordable, safe and sustainable bathroom solutions and repair led to many questions as the judges looked for more details on this business plan. With the focus of this 'big idea' being to help local community members have a solution to bathroom repair that wouldn't break the bank, Curtis's plan was well-received.

Griffee's bottle club idea was pitched as an establishment for folks to socialize, have a cocktail without the bar scene and add golf simulators for entertainment. This idea fielded questions from the judges as they looked for further understanding on how the memberships would work at this members-only club. An impressive scaled-down physical model was placed on display to help visualize what the club would look like on the inside.

Once the night concluded, all the community members got up out of their seats to mingle with other friends and family who had come out to show support. The Big Idea event in Box Butte County showcased how often the people who can best support a community are those who come from within it.

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– Today, Governor Jim Pillen announced his appointment of James M. Buchanan of Omaha as county court judge in the Second Judicial District. That district consists of Cass, Sarpy and Otoe counties.

Buchanan has had his own law practice in Nebraska for over 20 years, focusing on areas of domestic litigation involving paternity, custody, child support, adoption, estate planning and other related areas. Buchanan has also been an approved mediator for family law and other civil matters. Prior to opening his practice in Papillion, Buchanan practiced law in Iowa for two years.

Buchanan has a degree in management from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL). He earned his juris doctor from the Creighton University School of Law.

The vacancy in the Second Judicial District is due to Judge PaTricia A. Freeman’s appointment to the Nebraska Court of Appeals.

In July 2025, Gov. Jim Pillen signed a letter of intent to pursue an agreement with the federal government to allow NDOT to assume more environmental review duties for federally funded transportation projects. Under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), FHWA can assign NEPA environmental review and compliance responsibilities to individual states.

NDOT has now formally initiated the process of seeking a full NEPA assignment program. Currently, the agency has limited NEPA review authority. Full NEPA assignment would remove unnecessary bureaucracy and administrative burdens, while strengthening project-delivery consistency.

“Governor Pillen has made it clear that state agency leaders must continue to find more efficiency in government,” said NDOT Director Vicki Kramer. “For NDOT, this means looking for new ways to streamline and expedite the delivery of key transportation projects. Full NEPA assignment will allow Nebraska highway users to see a better return on investment, while federal environmental standards will continue to be upheld.”

Box Butte County Road Department Provides Update on Closed Crossing

OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing has achieved a major milestone in advancing emergency care education.

On Sept. 3, the college’s new Emergency Nurse Practitioner Post-Graduate Certificate Program received national validation from the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners — the official recognition that the program meets rigorous national standards for ENP education.

The inaugural cohort of the ENP program will begin in January 2026.

American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners validation ensures that academic ENP programs deliver high-quality education, with strong curriculum design, program leadership and alignment to ENP competencies. It also establishes eligibility for graduates to sit for the national ENP certification examination through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board.

“The purpose of validation is to ensure ENP programs are preparing nurse practitioners with the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, competent and high-quality emergency care,” said Haley Hays, DNP, UNMC College of Nursing-West Nebraska Division interim assistant dean and ENP specialty coordinator. “This recognition underscores the strength of our program’s structure, curriculum, and commitment to excellence in emergency care education.”

Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, DNP, dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, said the program will be an asset for health care across the state.

“The notification of this approval is a testament affirming the rigor and quality of the Emergency Nurse Practitioner Post-Graduate Certificate Program,” she said. “This is one example of our college listening to health care partners across the state and responding to a need.

“This program will develop nurse practitioners who will partner with hospitals to maintain their emergency medical services in rural communities.”

The ENP certificate program is designed to equip nurse practitioners working in emergency care settings with advanced expertise in assessment, diagnostics and management of patients across the lifespan. This 16-credit program follows a hybrid format, combining online coursework with in-person intensive training and clinical training over 12 months.

Applications for the first cohort are open now through Oct. 15 via&nbsp;<a href="https://nursingcas.liaisoncas.org/apply/#/deeplink/programSearch/organization/9180424720405760000" target="_blank">this Nursing CAS link</a>. UNMC Nurse Practitioner Emergency Care Program Achieves National Validation

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad and members of the Nebraska Air National Guard’s 155th&nbsp;EOD unit safely disposed of four grenades found in a home in Lincoln.

Tuesday morning, a Lincoln resident found four old hand grenades among the belongings of an elderly family member. The person reported the findings to NSP. The NSP Bomb Squad and 155th&nbsp;EOD unit responded. X-Ray technology determined that two of the grenades were suspected to be live and two were inert. All four grenades were transported and safely destroyed at another site.

“The family member did the exact right thing in this case,” said Sgt. Clayton Dishong, Commander of the NSP Bomb Squad. “If you ever find a potential explosive device, leave it where it is and call 911 immediately. Do not attempt to move the item and let professional hazardous device technicians safely remove it.”

The NSP Bomb Squad and ANG 155th&nbsp;EOD unit respond to dozens of situations each year in which old ordnances or potential explosive devices are located by family members cleaning out the belongings of a loved one. If you encounter such a device in that process, leave the item where it is and call 911, which can send the proper response team.

Each state will select its top picks in three age divisions, which will then compete with entries from other states. National winners will be announced in March 2026 and will be awarded cash prizes. The national winners will go head to head with entries from around the world.

LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska has 10.5 million corn acres and 1.5 million beef cows - more than enough acres of corn residue for grazing beef cows through the winter.

Scouting fields before grazing is important to determine the amount of corn present and to look for spilled corn that could cause grain overload, which could result in cattle bloat or death. If there are more than 8-10 bushels of corn on the ground per acre as ears of corn, a grazing strategy to control corn intake will need to be used to minimize grain overload risk. When there is a minimum of ears of corn on the ground, the number of cattle to be grazed and the length of time for grazing should be determined based on corn bushel yield per acre and the average weight of cattle. The UNL<a href="https://cap.unl.edu/livestock/tools" target="_blank">&nbsp;Corn Stalk Grazing Calculator</a>&nbsp;is an Excel® spreadsheet that can be used to calculate this. A quick way to estimate grazing days per acre available for a 1200-pound non-lactating cow is to take the corn bushel yield and divide by 3.5. For example, 180-bushel yield / 3.5 = 51 grazing days per acre.

Cattle tend to select for downed corn first and then seek out husk and leaves. The quality of grazing starts high at approximately 70 percent total digestible nutrients (TDN) and then decreases to a low of 45 percent TDN at the end of the grazing period. The rate of quality decline is dependent on stocking rate and environmental factors such as moisture and field conditions. Mature non-lactating, spring calving cows in a body condition score 5 or better will not need protein supplement, but will need salt, mineral, and vitamins when grazed at Nebraska Extension recommended stocking rates.

First-calf heifers within 90 days of calving will need protein and energy supplementation to meet nutrient requirements. Feeding 3.5 lbs. per head per day of dried distillers grains will meet this need. Fall-calving cows will also need additional protein and energy to meet nutrient requirements. Feeding 5 lbs. per head per day of dried distillers grains would supply this need. Grazing weaned calves with a targeted gain of one pound per day will need to be fed an energy and protein supplement. Research has demonstrated that dried distillers grains fed at 2 lbs. per head per day to calves will usually meet this targeted level of gain. Deep snow and ice can severely limit cattle's ability to graze corn residue. Have a backup plan and other feed resources available to meet cattle feed needs when this occurs. Corn residue can be an excellent, economical resource for late fall and winter grazing in many parts of the state.&nbsp;

Knowing the keys for grazing can help producers effectively utilize it. The Nebraska Extension Circular<a href="http://extensionpublications.unl.edu/assets/pdf/ec278.pdf" target="_blank">&nbsp;Grazing Crop Residues with Beef Cattle</a>&nbsp;provides additional information for grazing corn residue.

Feeding 3.5 lbs. per head per day of dried distillers grains will meet this need. Fall-calving cows will also need additional protein and energy to meet nutrient requirements. Feeding 5 lbs. per head per day of dried distillers grains would supply this need. Grazing weaned calves with a targeted gain of one pound per day will need to be fed an energy and protein supplement. Research has demonstrated that dried distillers grains fed at 2 lbs. per head per day to calves will usually meet this targeted level of gain. Deep snow and ice can severely limit cattle's ability to graze corn residue. Have a backup plan and other feed resources available to meet cattle feed needs when this occurs. Corn residue can be an excellent, economical resource for late fall and winter grazing in many parts of the state.&nbsp;Knowing the keys for grazing can help producers effectively utilize it. Halloween Reading Challenge at Alliance Public Library

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp; — As the calendar turns to October, the Nebraska State Patrol and many other police agencies are honoring cancer fighters with the annual Pink Patch Project. This is the eighth year for NSP’s participation in the Pink Patch Project, which coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In addition to raising awareness, the Pink Patch Project also serves as a fundraiser to support local cancer fighters. NSP’s pink patches are available for purchase for $10 at local NSP Troop Area offices in Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk, Grand Island, North Platte and Scottsbluff.

All proceeds from the sale of the pink patches will benefit Nebraska’s Hereditary Cancer Foundation. Sales of the pink patches have raised nearly $10,000 during NSP’s participation with the Pink Patch Project.

“The Pink Patch Project is a great tradition for police agencies across the country and we’re proud to participate at NSP,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh. “In addition to helping raise awareness, it’s a way that our dedicated team of troopers and professional staff can honor the cancer fighters in their own lives.”

The Pink Patch Project is a national campaign in which many law enforcement officers wear a pink version of their agency’s shoulder patch. Troopers have the option of replacing their traditional NSP patch with a pink NSP patch for the month of October.

LINCOLN, Neb. – As cooler weather begins to set in, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services reminds Nebraskans that mosquitoes will remain active until the first hard freeze, making it important to continue following preventive measures and protect against mosquito bites.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Cooler weather does not mean mosquitoes are gone. Until we experience a sustained hard freeze, we will continue to see mosquito activity,” said Dr. Sydney Stein, DHHS State Epidemiologist. “It is vital for Nebraskans to follow preventive measures to fight the bite and protect themselves and their loved ones from mosquitoes that could be carrying diseases such as West Nile Virus.”

“While most mosquito bites are simply annoying, some can transmit serious illnesses. If you experience symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue, or body aches after being bitten, contact a healthcare provider and mention your recent mosquito bite,” said Dr. Stein.

As of Sept. 29, 2025, the DHHS Vector-borne Disease Program has tested over 36,000 mosquitoes from over 1,800 mosquito pools across Nebraska.

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– Surrounded by students, staff, parents and members of Nebraska’s congressional delegation, Governor Jim Pillen signed an executive order at St. Teresa Catholic School in Lincoln, indicating the state’s intent to opt into the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit. Signed into law by President Donald Trump this summer as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill, this program paves the way for new school choice opportunities beginning in 2027.

“This program is a game-changer for Nebraska students and their families, generating funds that will help send students to the school of their choice,” said Gov. Pillen. “When it comes to educating our kids, we need to ensure that every student is in an environment that allows them to succeed. This program provides that opportunity, and I’m pleased to say that Nebraska will take part.”

The Federal Scholarship Tax Credit allows individual taxpayers to direct up to $1,700 to a qualified scholarship granting organization (SGO) in exchange for a 100 percent dollar-for-dollar credit on their federal income taxes. SGO’s will send donated funds to families to be used for eligible K-12 education expenses, including costs associated with attending private school. SGO’s can retain up to 10 percent of the donations for administrative costs.

“Through this program, up to 90 percent of K-12 Nebraska students in any educational setting could qualify for scholarships for high-quality resources,” said U.S. Rep. &nbsp;Adrian Smith, member of the Ways and Means Committee.

“Our students are our future, and I championed inclusion of this legislation in the Working Families Tax Cut package to empower parents with greater educational opportunity for their children. Thanks to Governor Pillen’s intention to opt-in to the program, Nebraska families can benefit from potentially billions of donated dollars leveraged by this program,” he added.

“Whether it’s a public&nbsp;school, private&nbsp;school, home&nbsp;school, or a hybrid of these options, parents have a right to direct the upbringing and education of their kids.&nbsp;The Working Families Tax Cut bill, which I supported earlier this year, included the first major nationwide school choice program,” added U.S. Rep. Mike Flood. “Thanks to Congressman Smith for championing this measure over the years and to Governor Pillen for opting our state in so Nebraskans can access more educational opportunities for their kids.”

Opting in is just one requirement of the program. In addition, participating students must be eligible to attend a public school, and families must earn no more than 300 percent of their area median income (AMI). The U.S. Department of the Treasury is expected to provide additional regulation around the program moving forward.

Sarah Schinstock grew up in Lincoln, attending St. Mary’s School. Of her seven children, six attend St. Teresa Catholic School. Her oldest daughter, who is disabled, attends public school. Schinstock said sending her kids to a faith-based school was an important choice for her and her husband, but it would not have been possible without scholarship assistance.

“Opting in to the federal school choice program will help us tremendously. It will provide more lasting scholarship money to aid us with tuition. Now, we will be empowered with the help we need to make the best educational decisions for our children."

Nebraska remains one of two states with no formal school choice program. In 2023, the Nebraska Legislature passed LB753, the Opportunity Scholarships Act, which created a tax credit program for donations made to SGOs. In 2024, that legislation was repealed by lawmakers and replaced with LB1402, which created a state-appropriated $10 million program managed through the State Treasurer’s Office, to direct funds to private school scholarships for low-income, special needs and other students. Later that same year, voters repealed the law following a heavily funded national and state-run effort to put the issue on the ballot.

“The teachers union has tried at every turn to thwart the efforts of our lawmakers to deliver any measurable support for school choice at the state level. And ultimately, that cost has come at the expense of our most vulnerable students,” said Gov. Pillen. “This federal program marks a significant step forward in providing them with that educational freedom, at no cost to the state.”

Gov. Pillen said his administration will work with school choice advocates to produce a list of qualified SGOs for the Treasury Department to consider, prior to Jan. 1, 2027.

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen has accepted the resignations of Bruce Bailey and Kim Lowe of the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. The resignations are effective today. &nbsp;Bailey was chairman of the three-member body. The resignations were provided at the request of Gov. Pillen.

“I appreciate the willingness of Bruce and Kim to serve, and I thank them for the time they have been on the commission,” said Gov. Pillen.

Applications for appointment to the commission will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17. Among the requirements, applicants must reside in the 1st&nbsp;or 3rd&nbsp;congressional districts.
